From the day in mens
Gold coast pumped toowoomba
logan were thumping brisbane who brought it back to compete in the last
south west were pumping maroochy who brought it back down the stretch also
ipswich and northside up and down all game with ipswich finishing ahead by double digits
brisbane thumped toowoomba
not sure of gold coast v logan looked realtivly even
northside beat south west by 8
ipswich took control of half 2 with marochydore barely scoring, ipswich by double figures
Northside, Gold Coast, Ipswich looked good South West and Maroochydore run all day and will be difficult to play against. Brisbane will compete every week they always do. Toowoomba will be very different when american player arrives. If Logan continue to improve week in and out they will do well throughout the year - a ton of potential this season.

a less then stellar performance by the bulls in gladstone tonight with a 40 plus point loss
gladstone were led by siminac and iwanicki who shot the lights out
the main positive for the bulls was the performance of jim wallis who had 23 points and is only 15 years old

Did anybody read the Ipswich Times this morning.
Apparently there were three small tremors measuring 5-6 on the richter scale in Ippi over the weekend.
Government sources are investigating the coincidence that they happened at the same time Lloydy was playing.

so many tough guys an way too much hostility an trashtalking going on this preseason.. haha who am i kiddin its bendoes thats all it is...
bundy did well wit locals an coach who had Power bench cheering for him to hit a shot, there new pg looks handy although they have lost a few they may still cause an upset or two if taken too lightly this season...
by the sound of things the south looks like it's goin to be an arm wrestle this year with most teams in the league seeming to improve this offseason there obviously will be some blowouts but as a whole its good to see or hear things are on the up for Australia's Premier Winter basketball league...
although there are the usual north favs i doubt this season will be as easy as last year was for some with league improving be interesting to see how many games POD lose this year compared to last...
and sweety the site isn't male biased there were alot of posts about Female basketball during the season, mainly based around a few of the Southern teams an some individual brilliance they displayed ;) http://forum.brisbanebasketball.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Personally i find it pretty hard to get too excited about the women's competition when it is likely that all of the teams will simply be playing for second place behind Townsville. From what i understand there wasnt too much good female hoops played on the weekend at Ipswich. I think Townsville play Cairns this weekend and Rocky are playing Mackay maybe, will be interesting to see the results there to see if there is anything to get excited about.

Townsville, Rockhampton, Mackay and Cairns all play this weekend and all are nearly at full strength. Rocky will be missing their imports but will have Weigh, Thompson and Martin. Mackay will be missing Deba George and Meehl. Cairns should be full strength and Townsville may only be missing Daniel Egan. All four teams look very very talented.

Mackay Meteorettes welcome reinforcements (http://www.dailymercury.com.au/storydisplay.cfm?storyid=3768196)
April 01, 2008
BASKETBALL: The troops are arriving to bolster the Dixon Homes Mackay Meteorettes ahead of the 2008 QABL season.
The first arrived yesterday when former Townsville Fire WNBL player Kelly Wilson landed in Mackay, and more could be coming soon, according to Meteorettes coach Scott McKenzie.
He is currently negotiating with two players from the US and Europe, and hopes to have a contract with either one sorted out shortly.
Wilson, 24, who spent the last three years with Townsville Fire, will meet her teammates in her first training run with the team today.
"Kelly will make a big difference to us," McKenzie said.
"She's still young but she will be an on-court leader, that's what she wants to be.
"She'll be great for the younger players."
The Meteorettes have lost much of the experience which last season took them to the QABL playoffs, with only Kelly Gamblin, 23, remaining of last year's starting side.
But while the team will be young and inexperienced, they will have plenty of enthusiasm and commitment, McKenzie said.
"We started pre-season training with six girls, now we have 11.
"They're still young, but they're keen."
Among them are Sarah Bone, a former Mackay junior who is returning to basketball this season, and Sally Robinson, a former Meteorette who is also making a comeback.
They'll be backed up by Cindy Gamblin, 21, Kelsey Rutland, 18, and Jackie Zelenka, 17, who have all had some experience in Meteorettes squads.
"They will all play bigger roles than they've had before," McKenzie said.
"But the exciting part is that I think we can still be competitive, if we can get the imports we need."
I've got nothing against Mackay bringing in so many players, but I'm curious as to where they get the cash from. Are they really that flush with sponsorship??

I think the Cairns girls have lost Kennedy, Paunovic, Downer and Cook. Rumour is the Simone Grant has ended up in Cairns though, dont know if they have picked up anyone else. I think Rohanee Cox is going to play a couple of games for them as well around her Opal committments.
Townsville have lost Rohanee & Hill. Picked up Dalgliesh and Cherie Smith.

Ok guys, enough of the Mackay 'Love-In'. Colin Oriard is completely over-rated.His 07 totals of 3 assists ( not per game- TOTAL) show you how selfish he is. More importantly, this guy is a black-hole for cash, look what happened to Bundaberg. Thats why I call him the leech. I hope its a simplified offence, as this guy is the missing link.It has taken him 8 years to finish a 3 year degree.Pathetic!
P.S Word on the street is that my boy Murph has started a rigorous training schedule under Qld Basketballs' premier athelete, Kyle Keirnan. Bund-a-berg. WE BELIEVE !!!!
P.P.S Inside information - Marcus Ch'ng settling in well in Ipswich, despite his initial

Another no named post from someone that probably can't play basketball.
In my opinion the way Colin was scoring the basketball last season, I wouldn't want him giving it up for assists. Just remember that a player needs to score in order to make an assist.
I know I probably shouldn't keep going with this reply but I've started my Master's which normally takes 2 years. At the rate I'm going (because of full-time employment) I won't finish it for several years more either. Considering Colin's basketball career, I can understand it taking him some time.

Oriard is overated, strong but can't last one quarter without an asthma attack, he was just a big sook. So I hope Mackay got him cheap because he definately wasn't worth half the $$$ Bundy payed him last year. He was supposed to help with the Juniors but was always a no show.
And like the last comment he was a selfish player. And his shot % was what....... well below 30%

Does anyone know what the Gladstone teams are looking like? Mens and Womens?
Gladstone observer.
THE Yaralla Port City Power first home hit outs against Bundaberg proved entertaining and provided the supporters with some sort of guide as to what could be expected when we get into the oncoming QABL season.
Our men although they themselves still under strength played a Bulls team that was fairly ordinary on paper but scrapped hard.
A 40 point plus win was to be expected and could have been more hadn't coach Smith lifted his foot off the throttle in the last stanza.
Dale Iwanicki and Daniel Simanic were the stand outs for the team on the night.
Looking forward, we can expect a presence from the coach himself after he shrugs off a niggling knee injury; Glen Chapman will return from a broken bone in his hand and the big man Michael (Wooky) Kingma returns this week.
Our women look also to be improving in leaps and bounds under coach Steve Bowden after defeating Bundaberg on Saturday night and going down to the strong Rockhampton Cyclone's by 30 points on Sunday afternoon.
Amanda Beatson was in good touch against Bundaberg while I thought Kelly Pegg stood out in the game against the old foe, Rockhampton.
The numbers at training are gradually increasing as the season gets closer and the news that the club is actively seeking an overseas import to bolster their ranks is all good, as we approach the commencement of season 2008.
Our junior representative teams start to head off tomorrow to contest the first in this year's Queensland championships. Our U16 girls travel to Ipswich to contest the division 1 title, while our U16 Boy's play for the division 2 title in Brisbane. The championships are from April 5-9.
Our U18's will head in the other direction traveling to Townsville for their state classics, which will be held from April 9-13. The boys will tackle the big guns in division one, while the girls will play in division two.

Damn sounds like someone's jealous.
Don't know the bloke personally, but he sure could play. Withous his play (and not forgetting consistently great performances from Nello and Wingding) the Bulls simply would have not made the playoffs. Massive on the glass, and solid around the hoop. Stats are no longer available so we can't verify anything, but if he was lacking in assists I doubt that was of any concern when he was rocking a 50% shooting clip.

Just want to state that Oriard opinion wasn't mine, yet I completely agree.
I would also agree Colin helped them make the playoffs. Just he doesn't play defence and doesn't play for the team.
Just look how Cairns abused him in the finals.
Nello and Todd were the keys of the team.

Towering American to set Meteors alight for new QABL season (http://www.dailymercury.com.au/storydisplay.cfm?storyid=3768708)
April 05, 2008
BASKETBALL: The 4MK Good Guys Mackay Meteors received a boost yesterday when new signing Colin Oriard arrived in town ahead of the team's second pre-season clash with Rockhampton at Candlestick Park in Mackay tonight.
The towering 6'8" centre flew in from Germany, where he played basketball with the Schwelmer Baskets.
In his time away from the court, Oriard, who has a university degree in Spanish, taught the language at a German kindergarten.
The 27-year-old said teaching was "in my blood".
"When my basketball career is over, I want to be a teacher," he said.
Oriard, who hails from the USA, played for Bundaberg in the QABL last year and admitted he had been looking to play for a metropolitan team this season.
But Meteors coach Leonard King managed to convince him to give Mackay a go.
"I really like his (King's) outlook on basketball and the way he runs things," Oriard said.
He was also attracted to the positive basketball environment Mackay offered.
Oriard is looking forward to the chance to get a look at his new team tonight, though he is already familiar with some of the players after competing against them in the 2007 QABL season.
"On paper we have the makings of a decent basketball team, it just depends whether we can all come together as a team; because above everything basketball is a team sport," he said.
Tonight's game, which tips off at 7pm, is a chance for the Meteors to avenge an earlier clash with the Rockets, when they claimed a six point victory.
The QABL season starts with a road trip to Townsville and Cairns on April 18.
The Mackay Dixon Homes Meteorettes have also been bolstered by the return of veteran Fiona McGrath.

In Cairns the Flames beat the Dolphins by about 80, they look scary good again. The big surprise though was the Heat thumping the Marlins by about 30. Apparently Cairns only missing Dwayne Vale. Dare we suggest that Cairns might miss out in the mens pool of death.
mate i dare we suggest that we shouldnt suggest anything... its a pre season game and its called "preseason" for a reason... so teams can have a hit out to know where their strengths and weaknesses lie.. and i wouldnt be quick to write off a team such as cairns with the calibre of players and coaching staff they have...
but in saying that congrats to townsville who we havent heard much of this preseason for going into cairns and getting such a comprehensive win.. because its tough anytime pre or reg season to go up there and win..

Marlins badly burned (http://www.cairns.com.au/article/2008/04/07/2930_local-sport-news.html)
Monday, April 7, 2008
THE Cairns men's and women's Queensland Australian Basketball League teams received weekend wake-up calls after suffering heavy pre-season losses to rivals Townsville.
The Dolphins were on the wrong end of a 117-39 blowout on Saturday night against a Townsville unit boasting a host of Women’s National Basketball League talent.
The Marlins men also have plenty to work on after getting badly burned by the Heat on Saturday night.
Coach Aaron Fearne lamented a poor defensive effort that led to too many easy baskets in transition in the 93-64 loss.
"That really put us under the pump because we struggled to get back and stop their easy baskets and it’s something we’ll definitely have to address," he said.
The Marlins improved yesterday in a 95-91 loss.
"It was a good game and a tight game all the way through.
"We had leads, they got leads and they ended up making a big shot to break it back out but I was very happy because our defence was very good and we talked and communicated with each other very well."
Results: Flames 117 (Cassie Dover 24, Cherie Smith 20, Kirby Dalgleish 19) d Dolphins 39 (Ashley North 11, Alisha Villa 11, Karina Gray 10); Heat 93 (Keegan Tudehope 16, Chris Cedar 14, Micheal Cedar 12, Andrew Goodwin 12) d Cairns 64 (Matt Smith 13, James Comino 11, Cameron Witt 9); Heat 99 (Michael Cedar 31, Andrew Goodwin 20, Chris Cedar 14) d Cairns Marlins 92 (Scott Cook 21, James Comino 17, Matt Smith 15).

My thoughts after a cursory glance at the available lists ....
BRISBANE
Men - Plenty of guard power, with Shaw, Brader and Beaktron all returning. Simon Taylor, Drew Phillips and Olsen are also very capable players. Barty and Hammo will be heavily relied upon to fill the inside spots however. I have a feeling Palmer will be playing plenty of small ball.
CAIRNS
Men - Not fielding the star-studded squad we're used to seeing, with Cook, Vale, Smith and Brebner the only recognised big-time players. The fish are all of a sudden looking beatable to quite a few teams! Kerry Williams will help this side if he comes back, but I think they need a few more bigger players.
GLADSTONE
Men - I appreciate that they have continued to put a decent team on the floor, despite a sub-par effort last season, and having to play in the POD. Hopefully out-of-towners Smith, Lloyd, Iwanicki and Wookie can help develop the local talent for the future. I hear Lloyd is still drastically out of shape. Wookie, Smith and Simanic will hold their own along with Iwanicki as starters, but production off the bench seems this team's biggest issue.
IPSWICH
Men - The focus is on rookie coach Wello, with Ipswich having finally gained two much-needed bigs. Lloyd Lewis has come on board, and Stolberg (I'm a fan) returns in shape. He brings along mate Dan Robinson, who is an under-appreciated shooter with great outside touch. We're looking at a startng 5 of Stollie, Lloyd, Jeffries, Tim Smith and Chingy, with Robbo, Calder and possibly Wello the main players off the bench.
Women - Trish Cockrem has popped up again, to coach the women. She's listed herself on the playing roster ... stitck to the bench please Trish. Amber and Stacey Howard should again be focal points, along with Marney Lee who I hear is playing a full season. Shannon Taylor hurt her knee a few weeks ago, and supposedly won't be playing, which is a shame.
LOGAN
Men - Seems that Meyerding will be playing for Logan. Possible starting 5 of him, Gureckis, Ammar, Thalo and Broom, which is fairly decent. How they go about sharing the ball is anyone's guess. Bones and personal favourite Josh Knight off the bench.
MACKAY
Men - Have spent some cash to become competitive, in light of recent poor showings, and having to play in the POD. With Fitzy and Oriard (screw you Bundy locals, he was a force last season) on board, Zane may very well be squeezed out as a restricted player. Mackay however may protest Fitzy's restricted status and have him included minus restrictions, as per what happened down south with Nathan Herbert. Wil Deba play her? I reckon he'll suit for Cairns.
NORTHSIDE
Men - Similar to last season. No Mike McDaniel, which will free the rock up for others. Youngy is listed, but I'm hearing he won't play. Matt Woodhead returns after two or three seasons away. Starting 5 of Trigger, Diesel, SD, Hamill and Dante with a leanish bench highlighted by Seth Hamilton and Siouto.
MAROOCHYDORE
Men - Admittedly lean. Won't win too many, and would do well to keep the losing margin to 10-15 points in most matches.
Women - Will be ok again. Stringer is listed to play, but will probably only play where little travel is required. Candice Dover is on board to give the team another decent inside player. The Browne sisters will continue to improve, and Shannon Profitt is a dependable player.
TOOWOOMBA
Men - I think the success of this team depends on the guard play of Glove and Reimann. Expect these two as well as Grieve, Tribe, Gurney and import to play the lion's share of minute. Gurney will go off this season, I can feel it.
TOWNSVILLE
Men - No surprises here. It won't happen, but I would love to see Rose suit up and get a few games under his belt. Mick Cedar, Goody and Fergs the go-to players, with names such as Chris Cedar, Max Murray and Duncan Webley to get a chance to push for good PT.
Anybody heard who South West is going to field? Obviously Jason Cameron is back, and reportedly out of shape, but who else? PJ? Cox? I like the move to Hibiscus ... no State Leagye team should have to play at a high school.

NORTHSIDE

It will be interesting to see how many games Rohanee actually get in. According to BA anyone involved with the Opals or Boomers isnt allowed to do anything after June 1. Considering the Opals also have the tour to China soon she will also miss the first couple of weeks of the season. Any of the women's teams that have to actually play her should see themselves as unlucky considering her commitments. That is of course as long as she makes the Opals.

Deba's back in business for Meteors (http://www.dailymercury.com.au/storydisplay.cfm?storyid=3769279)
April 11, 2008
BASKETBALL: Exciting guard Deba George is back in town and ready to tip off for another QABL season with the 4MK Good Guys Mackay Meteors.
The talented 22-year-old, who played for the Cairns Taipans in the NBL in 2007-08, has been a big hit for the Meteors over the past few seasons. While George said he had been looking forward to returning to Mackay this year, he admitted he "had a decision to make" when the Cairns Marlins wanted him to stay in the far north.
But George said once he heard about the list of players Mackay had recruited, including John Fitzgerald, Grant Kruger and Colin Oriard, he was "really excited about coming back".
"And every time I've come back to the Meteors, I've really enjoyed it," he said. The 6-foot point-scoring machine first played ABA with the Kuiyam Pride when he was 17 and has also played for the Marlins.
In the NBL, he played his rookie season with the Taipans in 2004/05.
George, who hails from Thursday Island, said he enjoyed the challenge of the NBL.
"It's a big step up (from ABA)... but it's a good competition," he said.
George's aim is to eventually play basketball overseas but said he would wait until he found "the right opportunity to take".
George arrived last Sunday and so far has had just a few training sessions with the team. But he is confident the Meteors will be competitive in the QABL this season.
"By the looks of things, it should be a pretty good team," he said.
George will be up against some of his NBL teammates when Mackay plays their first game against the Marlins at Cairns on April 18.

US import to boost Caloundra Suns (http://www.thedaily.com.au/news/2008/apr/11/us-import-boost-caloundra-suns/)
11 April 2008
Last winter, the Caloundra Suns had a little trouble finding points.
Or more accurately, had trouble finding enough points to win matches.
The side suffered from a lack of height, a big lack of height – of the Suns’ 10 regular players, nine were guards.
As far as size went, forward Ryan Parry was pretty much it.
But how things can change in the space of a few months.
This season, the Suns welcome a much-needed injection of centimetres, in the shape of American-import Bryan Jett.
Jett, a 6’8 forward, comes to the Coast by way of Atlanta, Georgia and, oddly enough, Germany.
On the Coast since late February, Jett is currently bunking down with Suns’ teammate Ben Glynn, who he played alongside on the US college circuit.
While this is Jett’s first season with the Caloundra side, he said it comes at the second attempt.
“I was out here in 2003, just for the summer,” he said.
“I was trying to get the visa organised, but it never worked out.”
The QABL season does not start until next weekend, but Jett said he has been able to spend a fair slab of time on the court and familiarise himself with his new team.
“We’ve had the chance to play a bit, the team looks pretty good. I’m really excited about getting a start,” he said.
“Everybody has embraced me really well, I’m looking forward to the season start.”
On the height-front, Jett stands a touch past the two metre mark, something he said his new team mates have had a little trouble adapting to.
He said ball delivery, for now, tended to be a little wayward.
“I try to stay above the rim,” Jett said.
“They’re not really used to having a tall guy, who can jump, on the team.”
The Suns start their 2008 campaign with the local derby match against the Maroochydore Clippers at Caloundra.
While the Clippers have no doubt heard about the tall American hovering above the ring down Caloundra way, Jett said he knows next to nothing about his team’s opening round opponents.
“Whenever I go out to play, there’s always hype about the other team,” he said.
“I just go out, play hard, stay focussed.”
The Caloundra Suns meet the Maroochydore Clippers at Caloundra Indoor Stadium on Saturday April 19, starting at 8pm.

Mackay must be considered as contenders if not the favourites. They possess four scorers capable of dropping forty each. They should own the glass with Oriard, Kruger, Fitzgerald, Jenkins and Duck. The back court is stacked and with spark from the bench in Ryan Carroll, Jake Patteson, Brad Rasmussen and Pete Duck these guys are legit.
G Cook Fitzgerald
G Vale George
F Comino Jenkins
F Brebner Kruger
C Smith Oriard

Favourites? You're kidding yourself! I wouldnt even go as far to say contenders, I would say "darkhorse" which still gives them a chance. It's actually lucky that mackay get cairns tville early away so that the marlins and heat might be a little rusty. With oriad only coming in this week it will be tough, chemisty takes time to build. I know cairns have been training hard 2gether for a quite some time and will be far too well drilled for the meteors! There's no shame in it, but mackay will be 0 and 2 at the end of the weekend. Do u believe otherwise? U can put all the names u want on paper but it will never beat a well drilled unit.
matt smith is a huge body to slow down oriad's easy buckets he got against the south last year, dean brebner is an underrated player far too agile for kruger, fitz at point guard is a big mistake as he does not make anyone else better and deba will be very tired chasing dwayne vale around who is my prediction for MVP this season. He's coming off a very solid and legit nbl season and will have much more responsibility with this group. If big nate plays, it's all over with him to throw oriad around like a little girl - Not sure if he is (playing) though. I think mackay will 100 percent make the playoffs and king can be praised for his recruiting, but it takes time. You can't just bring in a heap of guys and say "let there be chemisty" - its just not gonna happen. U need to take baby steps. So y don't u stop jinxing them by saying they are favourites and let them play without pressure and surprise some ppl.

Media Release 14.04.2008
The Bundaberg Bulls would like to announce the arrival of their new import Clyde Ellis. Clyde brings a wealth of experience to the bulls line up having played professionally overseas for a number of years. Prior to this Clyde played with the Bendigo Braves in the tough SEABL league in Victoria and averaged 24 points and 11 rebounds per game. The bulls feel that with the arrival of their import the intensity at training will go to another level and help to prepare them for the coming season. The Bulls season kicks off this weekend with an away game in Gladstone. The two teams met each other in a preseason game 2 weeks ago when both teams were under strength. This promises to be a good game with the bulls having made a number of adjustments and are looking forward to the opportunity of starting the season on the right foot with a win.

quality signing here by the bulls. bringing in a man who's career winning record in oz is about 2-17 after joining mid-season to what was an 8-3 bendigo team at the time. surely an intimidating figure that'll put up his 30 & 15 and draw the crowds with his on court actions.
his off-court actions, however, could draw the boys in blue...

From Brooklyn to Bundy Bulls (http://www.news-mail.com.au/storydisplay.cfm?storyid=3769802)
April 16, 2008
IF sheer size is anything to go by, Clyde Ellis is set to make a colossal impact in the Queensland Australia Basketball League. The two metre United States import arrived in Bundaberg yesterday, carrying with him massive expectations from the Bundaberg Bulls and their fans. "I played for Bendigo in 2004 and I had a good time so, yeah I'm looking forward to it," Ellis said at Bundaberg Airport. New Bulls coach Michael Van Dongen said the Brooklyn-born power forward could be the man to turn the new-look team into genuine title contenders. "I think we are definitely a chance of finishing in the top-two of our pool," Van Dongen said. Van Dongen said Ellis would spearhead the Bulls attack in new-look team that is trying to go one better than last year's playoff loss. Captain Kyle Keirnan the only player left from last year's squad said the new Bulls were gelling at training and waiting at the gates to charge into the 2008 season at Gladstone this weekend. The shooting guard is looking forward to hooking up with former Queensland team-mate Luke Cann who joined the Bulls from Townsville this off season. Cann is just one of the newcomers looking to secure a spot in the Bulls line-up this year. But none come with as big expectations as Ellis, who returns to Australia after a successful stint with the Bendigo Braves in the SEABL in 2004/2005. While the 31-year-old admits he does not know what to expect from the QABL, his new team-mates have already taken the opportunity to see what he can offer. Eagerly awaiting his arrival, the team gathered recently to watch some of Ellis's SEABL highlights on YouTube. "We were pretty impressed with what we saw, he has some really good skills," Van Dongen said.

Commitment and hard work has Power primed
April 17, 2008
BLAIR Smith is confident.
And the Yaralla Port City Power player/coach will hope his troops bring the same confidence when they attempt to translate the hard work of training during the past few months, into a season-opening victory in the Queensland Australian Basketball League (QABL) on home turf against the Bundaberg Bulls on Saturday night. "A win first-up against Bundaberg will set the tone for the season," he said. "It will show that we are serious this year."
The Power men head into their first QABL match of the season with boosted confidence after defeating Bundaberg two weeks ago in a pre-season trial. "We won by 46 points and we were without Michael Kingma who rejoins us this weekend."
Centre Kingma, who has recently returned from playing in the top national Swedish league, along with Smith, who is hoping to also return to the court after dealing with a knee injury, will make a huge impact on court for the Power. The duo provides not only shooting prowess, but leadership with a combined 20 years of experience playing in the National Basketball League (NBL).
Key Power players have been retained, including off guard Daniel Siminac who racked up an incredible 41 points in the match against Bundaberg, small forward Aaron Nagas and point guard Daniel Green. Small forward Dale Iwanicki, presently in the United States, will join the team in six weeks time to play the Maroochydore Clippers. "Dale is travelling up to Gladstone after he flies into Brisbane so he can make it to the game in time," Smith said.
"He is really excited about it and it is just another example of the dedication and commitment the players in the team have."
Another key player set for a comeback once he has recovered from a hand injury is last season's captain Glen Chapman. The Power is only in their second full season in the QABL and this will be the year they stamp their mark into the competitive league. Smith, who took hold of the coaching reigns for 2008, has already seen the moral and enjoyment level in the side grow. "The guys have been training really hard, boxing for an hour and then hitting the courts for two and a half hours twice a week. "Added to that they have had shooting practice three times a week at 6.30am in the morning.
"They are really supportive of each other and we are enjoying ourselves, which makes life a lot easier when you are working hard." After finishing last in the league last year, Smith has high aspirations for his team, which he believes should be easily obtainable with the team he has assembled together and the hard work they have put in. "We are aiming for a lot more this season last year we only had two wins. "This year I want a minimum of nine.
"The boys are keyed up and champing at the bit to get off to a good start at home." With a decent pre-season victory under their belt, months of arduous training, and five consecutive home games all the while loving what you are doing, there could be no better way to begin the new season. The Power meets the Bulls at 8pm on Saturday night at Kev Broome Stadium.

Women to give their best shot (http://www.gladstoneobserver.com.au/storydisplay.cfm?storyid=3769869)
April 17, 2008
A YOUNG and inexperienced Yaralla Port City Power women's team will hit the courts at Kev Broome Stadium on Saturday for their first Queensland Australian Basketball League match of 2008.
The Steve Bowden coached women's team is due to meet the Bundaberg Bears, who they defeated by ten points in a pre-season clash two weeks ago. Bowden, joining the Power contingent after stints playing with the Tasmanian Devils and working as an assistant coach in the national women's program, said at this point of the season, they were a little underdone.
"We have lost a lot of players, including Amy Gray, Bridie Steen and last year's captain, Prue Carlyon," he said. However, Gladstone born and bred Amanda Beatson has excelled at training after returning to play at centre forward, and management are currently in negotiations with an American import, Bowden noted. Also joining the women, although not until their second hit out at home against Toowoomba, is former Rockhampton Cyclones player Tamara Creamer. "There are positive signs for the coming weeks," Bowden said. On Saturday, Bowden said the team he puts on the floor will not be the strongest, but they will be out there giving it a good shot in the season debut. Yaralla Port City Power play the Bundaberg Bears at 6.15pm at the Kev Broome Stadium on Saturday.

Side builds up for shot at title (http://www.dailymercury.com.au/storydisplay.cfm?storyid=3769918)
April 17, 2008
THE 4MK Good Guys Mackay Meteors have been actively recruiting during the off-season and coach Leonard King has put together a formidable line up.
After a season of rebuilding in 2007, the Meteors will be hoping to improve this year and early predictions from fans suggest they have the team to put up a good fight against the competition heavyweights. On paper the Meteors have a promising blend of youth and experience, but their success this season is likely to depend on how they come together as a team. Key players: John Fitzgerald: Played with Maroochydore in the QABL last year and was the competition MVP. Linked up with the Singapore Slingers for the 2007/08 NBL season. Grant Kruger: A veteran forward with 15 years of NBL experience. He won an NBL championship with Wollongong in 2001. Colin Oriard: Was the QABL's top rebounder last season when he played with Bundaberg. At 6'8", Oriard will provide the Meteors with size and an inside presence.
Deba George: Dynamic guard who can generate plenty of points. This will be George's third year for the Meteors, and he has also spent three seasons with the Cairns Taipans NBL club. Josh Jenkins: The 19-year-old has been a member of the Townsville Crocodiles NBL development squad for two years. He also toured the USA as part of an Australian schoolboys team.
Other players to watch: Peter Duck, Brad Rasmussen, Ryan Carroll, Jake Patteson and Todd Blanchfield.
The coach: Leonard King
Last year: Missed the finals

Marlins aim for top again (http://www.cairns.com.au/article/2008/04/18/3192_local-sport-news.html)
Friday, April 18, 2008
THE faces may be different but the Cairns Marlins' goal remains the same for the Queensland Australian Basketball League season.
"We’re here to win the title, there’s no question," coach Aaron Fearne said ahead of tonight’s opening match of the season at the Bendigo Bank Basketball Centre.
The Marlins won the Australian Basketball Association title last year with a team that included Taipans Aaron Grabau, Gary Boodnikoff and Nathan Jawai but will have to do without the trio this season.
Rather than dwell on the losses, Fearne sees the situation as a chance for players such as Scott Cook, Dwayne Vale and Matt Smith to step up to lead the team this season.
The three were also part of last year’s championship team and while members of the starting five, played peripheral roles behind on-court leaders Grabau and Boodnikoff.
Kerry Williams, another member of last year’s side, is not expected to rejoin the team until late next month when he returns from college in the US, while new recruit Nello Giordano, a former Bundaberg player, will play only until then when he heads to the States for his own college stint.
Fearne said the Marlins had not come to grips with the changes and said it could take a while. "I think we’ve had some teething problems," he said.
"A new chapter has begun for the Marlins.
"Those guys that had been playing a role behind (others), it’s time for those guys to step up and fill those shoes. It’s going to take a bit of time, I think it’s going to take a few games into the season."
But after winning the national title in 1998, being among the favourites for the championship when the Ansett collapse caused the finals to be cancelled in 2001 and winning again in 2004 and 2007, the Marlins have adapted to change successfully for the past 10 years and Fearne expected they would be among the hunted again.
"We’ve been at the top of the mountain and teams are going to come after us but it’s been the same for the last 10 years – it’s really no different," Fearne said.
The Cairns Dolphins are in a similar position, although their significant changes to an already young and rebuilding side have left them with little experience to draw on.
Coach Mark Beecroft has lost four of the starting five from last season, leaving him with a particularly young side.
The addition of Opals squad member Rohanee Cox has been a boon but the Olympic hope will miss tonight’s opening match while on national duty in Beijing and is only likely to be available until June.
Karina Gray returns from a stint in Melbourne with Eltham but hopes Juliana Paunovic may have rejoined
the side on her return from college have been dashed after she underwent a shoulder reconstruction.

AMERICAN import Ryan McDade has impressed in his first outing for the Rockhampton Stadium Nightclub Rockets but yesterday promised fans the best was yet to come.
McDade starred in the Rockets' inter-team trial match at Hegvold Stadium on Wednesday night, hitting an equal game-high 19 points in the Blue team's 68-64 win over the boys in White.
The 205cm power forward/centre, who arrived in Rockhampton last weekend, said yesterday he was happy with his first-up performance but was still working his way back to full fitness after a broken wrist three months ago.
