Nominations have just opened for Maroochy's 2008 carni. You can access the nomination and info forms by clicking across to their website - http://www.maroochy.basketball.net.au

When - January 25th-28th (Friday night to Monday afternoon)

A & B divisions for both men and women.

A Grade - $375 nom fee ($800 1st, $200 runners up)

B Grade - $250 nom fee ($400 1st, $100 runners up)

All teams to provide a scorer for each of their games.

Nomination close on Friday 11th January.

Referees - if you're interested in travelling to this carni, contact staff on mebai@bigpond.com.au .... the standard of A Grade is usually pretty darn good, especially in the mens div. Referees were in short supply last time, so I'm positive the association would appreciate and look after all ref wanting to come on board.

Love the way some of the more active refs around SEQ get a team together and go the full playing/recovery/stay on your feet/win on points/wake up/play again type weekend scenario. Few times people get to see their human side and there's always a good vibe around them.

So which teams are competing this year?

Spartans
20-12-07, 06:53
Vern will be taking two Spartan squads with no NBL players to Maroochydore as part of ABA preparation. Players looking to try out need to contact Big Joe or Vern for details.

*snips press release*

Please try to keep posts in threads on-topic.

Will the Spartans actually put it all together this tourney? So many times before have they taken star-studded teams, yet left with their tails between their legs.

I hope Ryan Jeffries and T2 team up again, they were a real treat to watch in 06.

anyone heading to the Mackay Carni?

I think 2nd place should at least get their entry fee back... I'm not complaining about the cost of the carnival, it's good value for the fun you have, but to come 2nd and not even get to play for free is a bit of a slap in the face!

Is there any way to make sure that the B Grade Womens comp is ONLY B Grade players this year? Was a little unfair last year with a heap of ABA players in B Grade. Kinda defeats the purpose of going there for fun when you're getting flogged by players that should really be playing up a grade. Otherwise we always have a great time.

I think I remember seeing 1 team with a D league player and that was it.. Her Team was a gold coast team and none of them play ABA..

Team LZ will be running around in B Grade.

Heard there are a few bEErs teams to grace the mens B grade floor as well.

Steelers
13-01-08, 14:47
Gold Coast Steelers (old boys) not too keen on playing against 25-35 yr olds in B grade but want to visit old mate G-Force for weekend of so^^^^^^ing, surfing, singing and sculling around the pool. Would love to hear from a group of 40+ guys who would be interested in a couple of "out of conference" games over the weekend if at all possible?

With all the talent that is getting around at this tournament, I'm hoping to see a quality group of referees show up. Please please please let this happen.

Perhaps the best tournament yet, at least talent-wise.

A Grade Men was absolutely loaded, and the overall level of games played was very high.

Mt Crosby (Thalo, Meyerding, Stolberg, Roger Smith, Reyes, Josh Darragh, Matt Moore) won by about 7, after downing Game Gear (Cox, Adam Darragh, Diesel, Young, Nate Wilkins, Jenko) in the final. Too many bigs, and Thalo had a field day, after acting like a spoilt baby in an earlier pool loss to Maroochydore. Have to say that Stolberg looked very trim and appears to have shed about 20-30kg in a year .... a comeback on the cards? On the flipside I saw Kayla Beezley floating about ... she looks like she's put on fifty!!! What a waste of talent.

A few other teams ....

Suns White - Coastal juniors mixed with a few others. Played ok. Seems to be some decent talent coming through the junior ranks here.

Triple T - Bunch of Districts old boys including Justin Williams, RJ, Trent Goodrick, Kopittke.

Clippers - If this was their ABL team, they appeared pretty lean, but still played well. Got a nice win over Mt Crosby in the pool crossovers. Duncan, Hedges and Goff leading the way with youngsters like Tueta, Zeke Meehl and Scott Kenny proving that the locals won't be miserable without ZaFitz this season.

Inmates - Looked the part, with the team looking as though they were pulled directly from Woodford Prison. Bunch of BIG Kiwi blokes, one had arms as big as my torso. Decent ballers.

Maroochydore - Was told this side was their U18 squad. If so, they played pretty damn well against much bigger/experienced opponents.

G2 Cool Kids (Spartans girls) beat out Pacers (Spartans/Coastal girls) by a point of so in A Grade Women. Rachel Prior killed em and appears to be a talent worth watching this season. Cassie Smith, playing centre for the undersized Pacers, was brilliant. Would be surprised if she isn't at least training with the Logan WNBL side next season.

B Men won by Southside over Tully Morgan (Grafton boys) by a single point. This division was very tight, with at least ten teams having a legit shot. Not sure who won B Women, they were some bunch of old birds who could still go alright.

The tournament was generally played in the right spirit, with most teams being able to get along with one another. Volunteers were fantastic, with Beryl, Sid, Bruce, Vicki and Christine always there doing something. Certainly didn't envy the jobs the refs had, having to do multiple games whilst at times contending with fuckwits who thought every call belonged to them. Well done to Denise, Rob and son, Scott, Sarah, Ant, Naree, Justine and the red headed kid, among others. I would really like to see Maroochy get organised earlier and pull some good refs to this tournament in the future, but this year they did ok with what they had.

SCU was used as a venue for the first time, and it is much better than Immanuel and Good Life. One wonders how long it will be before the association looks at playing a lot of their games there, given that there are two courts and decent facilities.

Looking forward to 2009 already. Thanks to everyone who made the tournament what it was, definetly the best in Australia!

!

Press release on Logans website advises that Cassie Smith was the Logan WNBL teams first signing this week. She has signed with them for two years. Well done Cass.

My 5th aus day carni was definitely the best yet. New venue at the uni was great everything (aircon and 3 courts) seemed to run smoothly. Quality games and great atmosphere
Props to the refs (playing and reffing) The wheelies were a welcome addition
Very cool weekend
Any stories away from the court
Who hooked up with who and who threw up
good to see the bullets lads representing. At the bar anyway
