Champion Schools discussion right here.
Being played at Carina (with some games at Auchy) from Thursday 20th September to Sunday 23rd September.
Girls final 3pm on Sunday, Boys at 4:20pm.
JPC and State High should be the faves in both draw.
Who are the JPC boys running at the moment? I know there's Teys, but who else?

Huge advantage for pool A teams on semi final saturday. Pool games for A finish at 1:20pm while Pool B finishes at 5:20pm with cross overs (third game that day) at 8pm that night. So Pool A teams will have nearly 7 hours recovery compared to just under 3 hours for Pool B. Teams are going to need some solid bench players thats for sure.

Surprised he'd still have the time, however means TSS will be tough in the crossovers. Surprising result between State High and Mountain Creek, (even given the Sunny Coast boys great form of late) However, more surprising that apparently BSHS plays Wez Phillips on the bench all game whereas the Maroochydore team has been using him as a strike player and game breaker lately to good effect. Interesting...

Hear Liz Smith and Mountain Creek had a good come from behind win againt Cairns to set up an appointment with TSS. Seems the Sunny Coast lads can take a lead early and defend it or grab you with claws and teeth and not let go until they are back in front. Hoping they can stay on their giant killing way as they certainly weren't favourites coming in.

Well TSS basketball used to be a joke before Dave Claxton took over, he has improved it a lot, the best years have definetly been the last 2, culminating in a 4th placing at this State Championships, the best TSS has ever done i think. If only the AIS didn't take Christian Salecich, imagine the team TSS could have had this year. Nonetheless, the future looks good as 2008 should be stronger then this year.

With the resources available to them, the full weights gymnasium, an excellent 2 court facility, school time to practice basketball and expert coaching, one might think TSS would be winning these things not just running 4th as a best ever result. Seems they still didnt do much when the mighty Salecich kid was there anyhow? How would you explain that? By comparison, to see the limited resources and supposed 'unknown' coaching and lack of superstar players at some of the supposed lesser schools, it poses an interesting question as to how and why they fare consistently better than programs like TSS. Any clues?

Congratulations John Paul College and well done the Semerands leading their team from the front against the irrepressable and never-say-die, Mountain Creek boys. Great game that ended when Scott Kenny's last play 3 ball rimmed out and failed to take it to extra time. The one thought I keep having after this game and the whole tournament is how bloody good is Isiah Tueta??!!! Best thing that happened to the kid being amongst the first cut last years state squad. Perfect example to all young players who suffer the same to see how he's gone away, sufferd his disappointment but knuckled down and worked and worked to now finding he's the best point guard in his age group in the State.

Your right TSS does have excellant facilities and expert coaching. But TSS doesn't have a sports excellance program for any of it's sport or doesn't have a program like the Horizons one at JPC. Yet TSS manages to be strong in all sports it plays. TSS is the most expenisve school in Queensland, so unless you come from a wealthy family or gain a scholarship then you have no chance of attending the school. That rules a lot of people out. TSS is the best basketball team on the Gold Coast and has been for the last 2 years, that in itself in achievement. If TSS wanted to be the best at basketball im sure they could be, but the school has to want that and at the moment there is other sports that are more important and that the school puts more resources into. How many other schools have a sporting records like this ?? Tennis - 2nd at the State Championships. Basketball - 4th at the State Championships. Rugby Union - Best team in Queensland this year arguably Australia. Swimming - Best in Australia. Cricket - top 3 in Queensland. Rowing - top 3 in Queensland.

Final score 57-54 - three point attempt by Scott Kenny just before buzzer missed.
One thing I did notice when watching this game is how well Mountain Creek play as a team, they all feed off each other and if a couple more of their baskets had dropped the end result could well have been different. Being one of the smaller teams (as is usually the case for all the Maroochydore teams) didn't faze them one bit, they played big and with big hearts.
Well done Mountain Creek and congratulations to JPC.

Instead of being an idiot have a look at the TSS team of the last 2 years majority of players had never played clud or rep ball majority of kid s either from rugby or rowing that have been moulded to play roles in a sport that they only play for 8 weeks of the year with 2 or 3 players that have the knowledge of the game ie christian, josh(yrs 10-11) and carlos, and a number of young players that will be around for another couple of years playing against school teams that have players doing high school yrs 11-12over 3-4 yrs ,credit where credit is due the previous yrs were a lot harder in the GPS comp compared to now and the TSS part timers finished 3 and equal second against some great opposition and great players ,led by Christian TSS was competitive and the interest in the school grew 2fold in the great game of basketball,so much so that TSS have put a club together for friday night comps on the G/Coast starting with 9 teams 98%of kids attend TSS so credit were credit is due , Mr Dave claxton has done a great job with increasing the interest in b/ball at TSS
Agree this years team has more experienced b/bll players but very young all players to be back next year and still sitting second at the moment in GPS

Well done to JPC !
However I think the fact that Mountain Creek puts little if no money into their basketball, train 1 hr a week, still manage to beat teams like BSHS and TSS and come within 3 points of a state title is incredible.! Winners in my book.. and definately deserve that wildcard!
Great to see two undefeated teams play an exciting final with the result in balance until the final buzzer. If only that last three had dropped! Pity there was no shot clock. Would have added another dimension to the game. Good luck for JPC in the Nationals and for Mountain Creek in obtaining a deserved wild card entry.

It doesn't matter how much you train, if you don't have talent then you won't be good. Mountain Creek will always be strong as they have strong reputation in basketball and all the M-Dore players go there. I explained in my previous post about the situation at TSS. BSHS, i don't know what happened with them, maybe they have too many stars ?? All Mountain Creek's players play rep, so if they were not one of the top teams there would be something wrong with them. Isn't this the best Mountain Creek has ever done at the State Championships ?? How are they shaping up for next year ??

Not all of them play rep or even domestic competition, in fact one plays football and only started playing basketball earlier this year!
Yes it is the best Mountain Creek have ever done, last year being next best with 4th place. Next year looking good with at least half of the team being yr 11/10 now.

John Paul College boys and girls teams have both qualified for Championship Division. The teams which came second are able to nominate for a wild card spot in championship division (there is one in each of the boys and girls usually).
The rest of the divisions are decided by nominations. Schools who wish to pay to participate in the tournament nominate themselves for the division they believe that they will be best suited to.

I think the rule for nationals is that they can only choose 2 from AIS and others can play for their previous school if player and school agree, thus Crombie could play for JPC.

So now Lake Ginaderra have to choose 2 AIS boys from the lot that go there? And fill the rest of the team with regular students? Or is there only 2 AIS boys that go there?

All the AIS kids go to Lake Gin generally. The rule about them only being allowed to select 2 ais kids is probably correct, i can only ever remember there being 2 scholarship kids in the team at any one time.

big call 2 say tss is easily best skool on gold coast. only beating PBC who lost anto (fouled out) withnat least 5mins left in 4th quater and the game was all tied with like 45secs left until little adam hit a clinch 3. PBC also only lost 2 JPC by 13, were given 3 tech fouls in the game...2 were in the 3rd/4th quater wen PBC was only down by 5pts and teys hit all 4 free throws and a massive 3 wen they got the ball back. for a not overly well known team, PBC put up a great fight and if some calls went there way could have made and shudve made top 4. but, the final 4 deserved to be there and congrats 2 all teams. the comp was awesome...

Thats a fair post, but TSS beat PBC fairly and finished with a higher placing. I don't think there was much difference between the two sides, i actually thought PBC were favourites going into the game, but TSS placed higher so i guess they can say there the best on the GC this year. How is PBC looking next year ?? TSS will be strong with the same starting 5. More Gold Coast teams need to get to the level of TSS and PBC.

What bullshit!
BSHS were beaten by a better team in Mountain Creek, and other better teams at the tournament. Likewise they would be flogged by MANY other better teams at the Nationals. At this point BSHS are simply a super recruited, super stacked and poorly coached outfit full of player talent but unable to gel for results commensurate with the talent on its books. (cant believe they couldnt win with the players they have?! Cant believe they sat Wez Phillips on the bench all game!!!)
Sorry to be blunt but look at it objectively. If BSHS were as good as their roster, they would be going to Nats as #1. They arent. QLD's reps should be JPC and Mountain Creek...the two best teams from Queensland.

PBC blew their game plan with undisciplined behaviour, drew technical fouls, failed to adapt and manage their personnel, fouled out and were behind on the scoreboard at the end of the game. That means TSS and the other teams were better than them. Simple. Cant finish second on points and then say you were a better team because of a whole lot of other factors??!!

But Mitch Young doesnt go to BSHS. He goes to a school in Canberra. Anyhow how much more player talent could you cram into a side and still not be able to win? Give 'em a rest. Disband, try to forget the unfortunate experiment, move on and play in other teams. That one was a disaster.

Mitch Young is still eligible to play for BSHS should they obtain a wildcard position. I believe the BSHS seniors had their formal the night before their Mountain Creek game. Not making excuses for them but they do deserve to get the wildcard. They have a better team than they did last year coming 2nd at nationals. This year they go 8-9 deep as opposed to 7 deep last year.

Gees! What typical Brisso arrogance!!!

On paper, BSHS is by far the best team, but it didn't work out for them at State Champs this year, maybe the pressure of being favourites got to them ?? Another reason maybe that they have too many egos in their team ?? Im not sure. Nonetheless, they were outplayed by JPC and Mountain Creek. It amazes me how BSHS did not win, when they have players on their bench that would make any other team in Queensland. How is BSHS looking for next year ??

What about individual game performances ?
*Shauny D lit up Town High when the game was all over but nonetheless was still on fire.
*Scott Kenny took MC to the final with some able help from Matt and Lachlan Miller as well as another guard with nice game.
*Josh Jenkins, in a losing team all week exploded on the final day in the 7th & 8th play-off. Had something like 53pts and 17rebs
*George Coe was another stellar performer.
Any other individual standouts???

Anthony Olah from Palm Beach - Currumbin, for the wrong reasons though. That kid has a massive ego! I don't know if it is because of the Blaze signing him but wow. I watched their final between Cairns, all he wants to do was get agro. Definitly far from being a 'professional' player for the Gold Coast Blaze.

Tends to happen when your very young, extremely talented and have a lot of difficult things happening in your life all at once. Easy to get frustrated and go over the top. Anto can be a loose cannon, but when handled respectfully he was an extremely valuable and effective player for me. Dont know who coached him or what the circumstances were at schools, but fair to say Anto requires a degree of understanding to get the best from him. Fair bit of 'pressure' been placed on a young man' shoulders recently as well dont you think? He'll work it out and come through.

Town High, you would expect will own Div 2. Marcus Fossey and Hayden Lynam are solid enough scorers and passers but forward Josh Jenkins will decide this teams fate. He has the game but has tended to struggle in bad teams. He is more mature than the 2006 Classics when he scored at will but struggled with off-court dramas. Is an athletic freak and will be exciting to watch in Geelong. Has been in training with the Crocs, big wraps on him. Also, State High will be very tough to beat if they decide to compete in Div 2. That is if they don't receive the wildcard. Have a great reasoning for application with Brock Motum and Mitch Young to return to the side.

More to being a candidate for state selection than being able to run the floor. There's a number of bigs around who run better and finish, shoot and defend better as well and it doesnt mean they will make State. Still when you have the State Coach as your club coach anythings possible.

I agree. What's more JPC and Lake G play each other at 7.00pm on Wednesday and have to front up again the following afternoon in the semis assuming that they finish 1st and 2nd in Pool A. From there, both can still reach the final by winning their respective crossover semi final games but it will be a tough 24 hours for both of them.

Valid point and sure to have been addressed by the Lake G coaching staff. However, Lake G have been drilled to "sprint lanes", "stretch the defence", "get open" and you will be rewarded. Both Page and Salecich can and will find you and put the ball in your hands if you follow this simple instruction. If nothing comes from the initial then both are extremely lethal finishers on the second phase. If all else fails, the ability of these two guys to simply play the 2 man game will more than match the scoring capability of any JPC side even on it's best ever day. Jord and Christian have left Brendan and the twins a long way behind in the relatively short time they have been away. The difference will be in which side has the best overall team defence.

they also have two good role palyers in there startes who have had state experience in ben perry and dennis.
will be good to see them go at it against the so called renound basketball school of willeton and box hill. but i cant wait to see the result when page and teys match up and crobmie and white go at it.
think the difference will either be no one can run with page and christian from jpc or jpc will go deeper and just wear down lake g

Big statement that Jorden and Christian have left Brendan and the Twins a long way behind, when was the last time did you see these players line up against each other recently to make a big statement that you have ,yes agree that Jordan and Christian are amongst the top 4 guards in Australia other wise they would not be at the AIS,but a long way ahead i dont think so ,I think Brendan missing out on Emu camp was very unlucky ,2 yrs ago every one on this board was writing that Brendan was the bench mark for all players in QLD, he is still a very good player had good stats at this Nationals thats why i find it hard to beleive he missed the squad for 2009.

Is that in the eyes of Mum or Brother, lucky for us your not picking players for AIS and Australian teams ,Jorden and Christian are very talented young men and different players ,both at AIS and both have already played for Australia in u/17s not a abad resume.Brendan is a avery good player and probably a better player 2 yrs ago, but to put him ahead at this stage of their careers dont think so ,players develop in different stages eg Brock in the last 2 yrs has exploded into a very good player next step is to be challenged day in and day out training against the best with no where to hide, which i think he will handle no prob, for some players the next step is beyond there reach and the AIS gives no one a free ride ,you earn everything the hard way,
i would not expect to much from Jorden and Christian at school boys it has been a along season with school, training ,tours and injuries the boys would be looking forward to getting home with family, friends and the beach to relax and enjoy life for a acouple of weeks ,

I can't see the significance of the last sentence. Are you saying that the other players have NOT experienced a long season , training etc. I would expect any player that is attending a National comp to put in their best! After all, these comps are a test of stamina and attrition which "talented young men" should exude at all times. In the end the results will speak for themselves.

Is that in the eyes of Mum or Brother, lucky for us your not picking players for AIS and Australian teams ,Jorden and Christian are very talented young men and different players ,both at AIS and both have already played for Australia in u/17s not a abad resume.Brendan is a avery good player and probably a better player 2 yrs ago, but to put him ahead at this stage of their careers dont think so ,players develop in different stages eg Brock in the last 2 yrs has exploded into a very good player next step is to be challenged day in and day out training against the best with no where to hide, which i think he will handle no prob, for some players the next step is beyond there reach and the AIS gives no one a free ride ,you earn everything the hard way,
i would not expect to much from Jorden and Christian at school boys it has been a along season with school, training ,tours and injuries the boys would be looking forward to getting home with family, friends and the beach to relax and enjoy life for a acouple of weeks ,
These boys are overated always have been.

Overrated doesn't mean they're not good players, just perhaps not as good as some people would like to think. You pointed to their 'runs on the board', but really their performances of late aren't much to brag about. Nationals semi-final, Vic Metro took Mitch Young out of the game and basically dared the others to beat them and look what happened. Then in the bronze game Matt Delavedova outscored these two 39-15 combined. Are they good players? No doubt. Are they overrated? I'd say based on this list they are rated about right to be honest...http://www.aussiebasketball.com/m1990.php.
Back to the tourney, and even though I'm not a JPC fan it would still be good to see a Qld team get up 2 years in a row. I just don't know if they have the experience or the size though. Time will tell.

Doesn't look like it. JPC down by 23 to Box Hill at half time, end up losing 64-82. Teys with 30p/5r/3s, but not much support by the look of it.
Lake Ginniderra beat Willetton 111-93. How about two guys from Lake Gin put up 30+... and they weren't even our AIS boys! Christian nearly had a triple double though (11p/10r/9a), and Jorden with an impressive 22p/13r/7a/7s.
Stat line of the day though belongs to Justin Aver from Whitefriars College in their win over Sacred Heart. 46p/5r/7a/4s!

It will be tough for JPC with a must win against Willetton tonight; and they still have to play Lake G.
For those who haven't yet ventured to the Schools website, it provides a blow by blow description of play for the Championship games including full box scores and shot map. Worth checking out.

You may or may not be right but neither Christian nor Jord had the green light to go one out like Matty D had in that game. It was case of 4 guys making shut down D their sole priority with Matty making sure the scoreboard kept working. Smart tactic to win a game they could not have won any other way. Judging by Jorden's and Christian's performances in the final and earlier games in Geelong this week, they may well have posted the big scoring numbers in that game were the roles reversed. I know for a fact tht Jord was the happiest kid around when that self styled expert changed his ranking from No.1 in the country and alleviated the bagging and expectations pressure that it created amongst his basketball buddies. (Jorden and Matty are best mates and although there are a number of guys who would kill for the ranking, Jorden and Matt are the kind of guys who remain very humble about their ability and would prefer to fly under the radar as much as possible....hard as it is for them these days.)

It should be noted that Mountain Creek High with their Coach who says she's just a "maths teacher" and who have to pay all their own expenses for the honour of representing their school went within a point of beating the JPC with its full time basketball coach/teacher and copious amounts of cash by way of scholarships and support personnel and facilities and equipment for their basketball program. Would have been the absolute fairy tale for the state school "battlers" from Mountain Creek to win that final and take the berth in Championship Division at the Nationals. (Its unfortunate that with all the pull Karen Graham and JPC has in Qld basketball circles that the refs at Carina that day were never going to let that happen. Watching the video of the extra time period is like a funniest home videos segment with their calls and interpretations preserved for all time as testament to all that is good and all that is bad about schools basketball.)
Congratultions Mountain Creek for back to back National reserve grade titles and shame you didnt get the chance to have a crack at the big dance with the team you guys had this year. It's a credit to you and to Coach Smith to have represented the school so admirably against all the big name, big reputation players from the major 'money' schools. Congratulations to JPC for again flying the flag for Qld schools basketball as the benchmark program of the schools scene. Imagine one day when all schools allocate as much money and resources as JPC towards the betterment of basketball and their athletes...WOW! Keep up the good work.

Really Robert, whether you call it Div 1 or Div 2, it's still second division and no better or worse than last year. (Assuming they won 2nd division last year and not third division?). It's also back to back titles, undefeated, a shame they didnt get a crack at the 1st Division with the team they had this year and the fullest of congratulations are in order for the team and Coach Smith on this attainment. (All pretty well covered in the original post I thought?)
Cant see the point of your "correction", or understand your logic?

In my experience alot of kids who play basketball want to go to JPC because of its reputation as the top basketball school in the country. If their parents can afford it they go if not they go to State High also because of its reputation. All the resources a school may have or not have for the athlete, in the end its up to the individual how successful they become. Look at the succesful players who never went to JPC.

There are many more in fact who didnt go there than did attend. JPC being the "top school in the country" is a petty big call but it has happened a couple of years I think. In any case it sure says a lot for Mountain Creek State High where there is no money for the basketball program, no scholarships for recruiting players and no budget or "influence" to have their head coach get the relevant BQ State tem coaching job to further attract the better players to their school in a given year. Pretty good for the Creekers to finish only a point behind the "silvertails" with all their resources. Shame the Creekers couldnt get a shot at Championship Div. They probably wouldnt have beaten the eventual winners but a top 4 finish was certainly realistic with the team they had and the way they been playing. (I suppose that was a "QLD Victory" of sorts with a couple of Qld lads leading the ACT team to a tournament win? Hell of a tournament by Christian and Jorden!))

Opinions by many at the tourny that the two over-rated players Jorden and Christian, were the pick of the crop Jorden as MVP and Christian a good second ,both played great team games with Jorden being the offensive machine and Christian`s passing and defensive work balancing out a agreat team effort both boys played big minutes and bringing their team mates into the game every opportunity ,according to most critics here both are over rated and both have coped alot of crap on this site great to see these two answer their critics the best way possible, so give these young men a break to do what they love best and enjoy their skill and passion for the game ,because there going to be around for a along time yet .
Well done to the JPC girls outstsanding effort ,to the JPC boys thought they would have at least got in the top 4 with a good side that they had

Certainly no disrespect intended, it is simply a fact that these 2 were tough to beat this year. From memory neither was top score for the entire tournament. The fact is if teams have to concentrate their efforts on these 2 as long as the supporting caste can hit layups they would be hard to beat. The intention of the initial question was whether or not they have another year, for which unfortunately I don't have an answer.
BTW I am fully aware of the fact that each and every member of the team is important it just that some are more influencial.

Dont want to talk up "Izzy the wonder boy" too much but he's sure got tongues wagging in South Aust. Word has it he plays a very similar game to the kid who will be SA Metro's primary point in 2008. Stronger word is that he dominated the same kid in every department during the grand final of the 1st division and has SA basketball people comparing him to Jorden Page and asking a lot of questions about him. Interesting they both hail from the same 1 court stadium with $2 rings and backboards. More interesting to see Izzy and Jorden going head to head 1 on 1 just the next day after both got home from the tournament with their respective teams. Guess that's "the difference".

The two teams played twice and he hardly dismantled him. Over the two games they were probably evenly matched. Both kids can play, the SA kid is going to the next Emus camp and I'm sure Tueta is in the running for future camps as well.

By your logic (the scoreboard tells the story!) the SA kid "won" 39-37 over the two games. This is of course just plain wrong. I don't think anybody disagrees with you even the "haters". The last poster expressed his opinion that he had the SA ahead on overall game on what he saw in the two games. Again they are both very good players who had a great individual battle and Mountain Creek won two well fought games over the SA team.

I would think actually playing at a school in the US would expose the boys to many more scouts of all levels than are able to visit over here for that short period.
Yes it is a shame he did not go with the state team but sometimes one cannot do everything.
If you ask anyone who is in management of the US tour they will tell you names and numbers of players who have received scholarships.

Playing for Australia gives these guys instant credibility and they are in the right place to take advantage. Not disagreeing with anything you say but can someone explain how it works. If its an Australian team how come Young, Salecich etc from the AIS who are in the Australian Emus arent in this team? I heard its a "tour" put together by Murray Aldred and Trevor Cook on behalf of horizon tours and the kids have had to pay a few grand each to go over there to "represent " Australia. because u needed to play schools rep basketball.
like in qld, u play for ur schools reigon (met east, met north, met west, south coast, wide bay etc). then a state team gets selected for national school sports, then once thats over, they select an australian side to take to the states. being a qld mens coach, no wonder a heap of them are from the sunny state
the tute players are uhh, at the tute, so they dont play this system, but im sure if christian was still enrolled at tss, then he would have been in that australian side.

Reports of a great game between Australian boys and Mount Zion won of the top 10 ranked high schools in the USA. Boys lost by 1 with the girls winning easy and going through the tour undefeated. Australian women basketball a class above what has been seen in the USA, Boys finished 5 from 8 with the biggest losing margin being 3points. one game lost on the buzer when they jacked up a shot from in there own half, all players are expected to receive scholaships within the next 2 weeks

Fantastic that the Aussies have done so well and the college scouts have recognised their talent. We can only hope that most of the Aussie players on tour will be in a position to accept the athletic scholarships in terms of academic results though.
I know for a fact that several of our top Australian juniors, including from the AIS, have had to suffer the agony over the past 12 months of not being eligible for div 1 & 2 colleges in the USA due to poor school grade point averages. Hence they can't take the scholarship offers and have to go to a junior or prep college if at all. A bit of a lesson in this story for any young players reading this post that want to go to the USA to play College ball. Keep up your grades at school or all of your hard work building your game will mean nothing (in terms of getting to the USA that is) if you can't accept the scholarship offers that you worked over so many years to obtain.
Good on the Aussies though. Well done.

That is a joke that the Australian Schools team lost 3 games. They should never loose to a high school team. Did Aus schools play Oak Hill Academy ?? They are the best high school team in the U.S
