Referees

Attached is advice from Steve Brook at Basketball Queensland. It is imperative that you read and understand the implementations of reporting a player, coach or official in future. If you report them you must make yourself available to attend the judiciary hearing.

A BQJBC referee was found guilty of ‘failure to attend a Tribunal without proper cause when notified’ this week, and is now on suspension. Please ensure this info. is passed onto your Referee Supervisors to educate referees. Where a referee submits a report form, they must make themselves available to attend (in-person or via the phone) a tribunal.

REFEREE APPOINTMENT

The Southern Districts Basketball Association has moved a step closer to completing the three year restructure, ensuring the best possible enjoyment for both social and serious athletes by securing the services of Stephanie Onn as the referees educator.

Onn who has been a driving force in referee development over the last few years in the southern parts of Queensland starts from next Monday in restructuring and education of both the old and new referees with a focus on referee educator development.

“We have had so many young talented officials starting here over the last ten years but we have always had trouble keeping them” offered Charles Ellis, Association President. “Stephanie is respected and knows her stuff. We advertised the position and she was without doubt the most qualified applicant”.

Onn went on to say on her appointment. “I have been involved with the game of basketball for the past 14 years. During this time I have contributed in many different ways to the promotion and running of the sport. I have coached and managed teams, held several different Club and Association management roles (Treasurer/ Vice President/ Secretary...), performed on score
benches at all levels up to ABA, successfully managed ‘game days’ (both junior, senior and BQJBC), refereed all levels of basketball up to BQ - Men’s Development League and evaluated/ coached referees up to level 2. I like what Southern Districts are doing and I wanted to be part of that”.

Recently Onn has been working with the Logan Basketball Association as the Junior Referee Development Officer. Her main focus in this role has been to bring the management and development of their junior referees up to an acceptable standard. This Onn achieved in six months and while still supporting the Logan program will turn her focus to the Southern Districts Basketball Association.

Referees and those wanting to get involved who wish to join the program should contact the office on 3398 2790.
