View Full Version : Jacaranda Basketball Carnival
Grafton Basketball (http://www.grafton.basketball.net.au/) are calling for nominations for their annual tourney.
Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th October. Noms close October 1st.
Entry for A Grade is $220, $190 for every other grade.
For more info visit their website, or email Steve Smith on vikings@northnet.com.au
Spoke to Bruce about 5:30pm this arvo and he told me he should have some times tomorrow (9/10) that time but whether or not it's all teams or just my boys i can't say...
Who are you playing with mate? Div?
Vikings boys from back in the day - A grade as usual. You heading down at all? If so, will prob see you out and about...
Yep going down with Brad, Cam and a few of Brad's mates. Playing Div 2 but.
See ya there. If you get a look at the draw let us know.
The organisers have been emailing team reps notifying them of when their Saturday games are.
No electronic version of the draw available. Very poor form as usual.
A Men:
Entertainers beat SFW (Thalo's team I think) in the Final
A Women:
Drunken State (UNSW girls) beat SFW (Megs Michael's team) in the Final
B Men:
Entertainers beat Average Joes in the Final
No idea about the rest.
I can't believe you let those tossers beat you in the Final, Thommo...very AVERAGE!!

The Grafton carnival held over the weekend was an utter disgrace, and should in future be treated with disdain.
Where do I start????? There is but an iceberg, and here is the tip of it ......
- No referee older than fifteen years, so it would seem. The standard of officiating was pathetic at best, not helped by the fact the sknflint organisers were only paying $7 a game. $7??? Are you fucking kidding me?!?!?!? No wonder no decent person wanted to blow a game, poor poor form on behalf of Grafton Basketball. I had much love for the kids who willingly put their hand up for so many games, but realistically the games would have been no different if there were no referees at all. At least some teams had the good grace not to hurl abuse at them after a missed/bad call, unlike bullys such as Anthony Standen's entry - he among others deserved an almighty good boot up the arse.
- State of the courts. If I knew we were to play on ice rinks, I would have packed my skates. Team strategy: don't bother playing defense or changing direction because you're either going to end up on the floor or in a wall! Oh, and let's not forget those gems we came to know as courts three and four. 3/4 sized courts, with no three point line on the wings!! Haha! If you made a basket you were doing quite well, because the rings were 10 1/4 feet tall.
- Organisation. Or lack thereof. After being told of our game times on the Thursday, we organised ourselves accordingly. Turn up on Saturday morning for Game number 1, and our draw has been completely changed. Thanks for the notification losers. Happy enough to take our hard earned, but couldn't afford the courtesy of a 50 cent phone call to notify of the changes. Oh, and gotta love the $5 entry fee double dip. Fuck.
- Sportsmanship: No doubting it was the entries from QLD that made the competition. Most of us were happy to have a laugh before, during and after the games. Jodie Wilson, very good work with your SFWs. Thommo well done with the Joes. Likewise Emma and the Hooprats. Props the the Grafton young 'uns for having a good time as well, love it. A big fuck you to The Entertainers (among others) who played the comp as thought it were the world championship. Not willing to have fun, but willing to be thugs wherever possible and give their pathetic supporters something to yahoo about.
Maroochydore may have its own bumps, but I implore everyone to support the heck out of this gem. Love the volunteers, love the beach, and love the laidback atmosphere that all teams revel in. Bring on January 08, and good riddance forever to grafton .

To the hate dude,
First of all your saying whats wrong with the jacaranda carnival inc court conditions and refs, then you finish with saying how some teams took it to serious. Mate you have missed the point completely, they had a pub on every corner and they all served beer. Organisers did an excellent job (on ya bruce) and i know i speak for my team when i say from what we can remember it was another great year.
Cheer up emo kid

Well said mate!
As someone who has been playing the Jaca since Courts 3 & 4 were the main stadium and half the games were on outdoor courts all I can say is the reffing never changes and neither does the fun most teams have. I know for my team it's nearly like a reunion every year and we have all made friends at the Crown, the PO and even Roches Pubs that we look forward to seeing every year. Enjoy ith the way its meant to be and forget the bad.
I know my team will all be there again next year.

I agree with what's been said so far. Yes off the court the carnival lived up to what it's supposed to be with plenty of cold beverages consumed by all. It wouldn't have been too hard to improve it on though. Courts 1 and 2 seemed ok. 3 & 4 were a disgrace. Wouldn't take too much to throw a couple of nets up properly and sweep the floors at the start of the day, considering how much cash they roped in.
Without sounding like a heart breaker either, it wouldn't have taken much to have a court supervisor to step in when a drunk player spews in a bin then abuses a 14 yr old girl (in language I wouldn't use to a homeless abo). Or to put some restraints on glass bottles being smashed courtside or players being asked to remove their metal framed sunnies while playing... seems common sense really.
Good to see everyone out at the PostOffice until close as well.
Let me just say I love Grafton...... I was fortunate enough to organise for 4 teams this year being the SFW group...
Grafton Tourny has been running for 40 years and has been the venue for many new friendships renewal of old and having a great time with your friends. I personally saw a player from Hoop Rats that I hadnt seen for over 3 years.
Because of this the referee's that were participating in my teams we couldnt (even though I did 2 games) ref our teams which makes it really hard when you have four level 2 referee's sitting on the sideline watching the A men & A women Grand Finals.
I did get to ref a mens semi which was the Tainers and I am quite good friends with them so get nothing but respect from them.. I ref as a favour to Bruce and Sandra to help if more of us ref'd it would help get rid of the little ones I personally ref'd 8 games as did 4 of my other friends I am sure if you were there you'd know who I was with my ref shirt & pink shorts.
Bruce and the Grafton locals do a fantastic Job for basketball and are one of the few Associations who still run a tournament and they are a Country Tournament. I dont think people realise how much work goes into organising a tournament and making sure it runs smoothly.

I have been attending Jaca since 1996, mainly with teams called UQ but in the last couple of years we have changed it up and put random team names in even though the players are from UQ.
Courts 3 and 4 are always a bit shitty, but it kinda adds to the flavour and character of the tourney. I have to say before this year, I actually loved playing on those courts. This year not so much, but it brings a new dimension to the game.
I have to say that this year the referees for our finals games were the best we have had actually! The referees are always a bit of a lottery, but hats off this year, our Semi and Final were very well run.
It is great the Entertainers come every year etc, but I agree with the previous poster - they did not make any friends during the weekend, definetly in my team at least.
Their No 42, who does not seem to play at all, badgered one of the Wives of my teammate who was doing the bench. They had the gaul to give me shit when I went across to help her out and try and fix the situation. (It really changed the game when he got 4 of our points scored for them) However, congratulations to them, they won B and A Grade.
For those who remember, there did not used to be Court 1 and 2 - and only Courts 3 and 4 and outdoor courts! Those were the days :-).
Where were the Celtics this year? They always bring it!
Thanks to Bruce, the Refs and the other teams. We had a great time and will be back again next year for sure. Hats off to the UNE boys I met (have no idea what team they were playing for, but they were in C Grade). I met them at Uni Games on the Goldy. The Goonade was a great invention and tasted great too :-)

Gee, I only happened to stumble on this site and really didn't think that many ppl had so much ill feeling towards The Entertainers. We have been going to Grafton for a long time and 08 with be our 18th straight year there. Alot of us get to see eachother this only time and use it as a reunion. Alot of us don't play that much anymore but come up here to have fun and play ball. I've made alot of friends over the years and have never had a problem with anyone and Bruce and his team there do a wonderful job every year and we love coming back to see everyone and have as much fun as possible. Sounds like the boys who are quick to criticise us should put their egos aside and come and have a drink with me at the PO and i'm sure you will realise that we aren't the wankers u think we are. We all used to be competative on the court and I've been subject to parents abusing me on the sideline because I flop.. Then when I bend down to do my shoelace up and explain that if their 16 yr old boy was to run into me being 120kg and i didn't take the flop, he would have got hurt. We don't act as if we are world champs or anything like that. We support our mates doing the best they can and we have been a close and tight unit for a very long and will continue to do so. We pump eachother up. Thats what mates are about. We start partying on the Thursday nite in either Coffs Harbour or the Gold Coast yearly then party all weekend and every year we meet new and great ppl we keep in touch with and come back to do it again the following year. So the Wanker with the "fuck you" message from last year, don't judge a book by its cover my friend. Read the actual content of the book and u might be surprised. Hopefully we can all have a good time this year and we are trying to get a fancy dress theme happening on the Sat night this year so everyone is not judged by the emblem of their team logos like we seem to be by some and try and get everyone on an even playing field on the dancefloor. The theme is 1991 or 1987 so hope u all try and get into it...

The Entertainers are a pain in the ass they use this fun weekend as a huge booze trip, from the Goonbins to the cartons of beer its all a booze filled riot to them. The Grafton hotel will be empty this weekend and will not allow any basket ballers accomadation because of the Entertainers fuking up in the past no other Hotel in the town wants them around they should count themselvs lucky the PO puts up with them

Well another great year for all.. We celebrated our 20th year in style winning all grades we entered. Thankyou Grafton Basketball Association for the last 20yrs and especially this year for the special gifts we received from you.
To the idiot saying there is no basketballers staying at the PO.. Well thats where we stayed.. We enjoy having a good time and we achieved that again this year.
Even management at the PO were complimentary of our behaviour on both nights. Unfortunately they managed to piss off some other teams which took alot of the basketballers over to the Jacaranda Hotel on the Saturday night. Unfortunate but a good night was had on the Saturday night as well so thankyou to both the PO Hotel and Jacaranda Hotel and The Clock Tower hotel for hosting dinner for us on the saturday evening..
And a special thanks to the non drinkers on our teams that put up with us all.. Not everybody drinks in The Entertainers..
All those places that didn't want us... I just don't know about that statement... Oh and the crown hotel who actually slept a few of our players as well because of the PO not having enough beds for us all.
We didn't have any complaints from the Grafton Hotel last year either.
One complaint in 20yrs.. not bad i say..
Getting too old for childish comments to even bother with someone that posts something derogatory without putting his name to it. Grow up clown...
Great catching up with everyone again and see you all next year and hopefully throughout the year before coming back up next year. Have a merry xmas and safe and happy new year if i don't speak to u before then.
Cheers

My apologies i misread the no basketballers at the Grafton Hotel.. As I said previously, I had no calls from the Grafton last year with any complaints.
We were a bit rowdy in the first half hour of our arrival but other than that there was no problem.
Problems i encountered were locals at the pub swearing and not being welcoming at all but sometimes you get that as locals sometimes don't take to newcomers at times.
We've also stayed at the Grafton Hotel many many years in our early years and have some great memories there.
It's a pity they feel that way about basketballers, as every year basketballers travelling to Grafton give the local economy a boost and it's a bit unfortunate that a great town such as Grafton has an individual commenting on pages like this without putting his/her name to it as you should be kicked out of the town as all ppl i've met in Grafton have been awsome ppl..
It's a pity u drag the whole town down like that.
I hope the upcoming festive season will change ur perspective on life.

I really cant understand why people want to get on here and bitch about other team esp the entertainers. I play for george st brewery and we have been going for 5 years now as that team and have never had an issue with any other team. The way we see it is we are here to party with our mates, play hard but drink harder, and have a beer with as many other teams as we can.
As for the hate on the association, please dont come back... noone goes there for an nba pre season camp, and who cares who refs!!! Refs never get every call right same as we dont make every shot!!! At the end of the day there is beer and thats all this weekend is about.
Congrats to the entertainers for 20 years, and all the other teams who do it in true spirit such as drunken state and the byron lads!!
Approx 355 days til jaca 2011!!

Great to see plenty of love for the Tainers... To the haters, don't get hung up on the way we clowned you on the court, we have been celebrating this great carnival for 20 years in great spirit, unashamedly playing as hard on the court as we play off it and winning plenty of titles and friends along the way.
We have never had any major problems or incidents or unsavoury moment in 20 years of coming to Grafton. Just plenty of love for this town and the people that come back year after year to support this awesome old school carnival.
Looking forward to the 2011 Jaca to defend our clean sweep of Div's 1, 2 and vets. There isn't too many tournaments around like it these days where the emphasis is on fun. Yes you get shitty refs and dusty floors but thats all part of the fun.

Well it looks like a drunken riot, "all about the beer' and makin fools of ppl.
And the 'tainers have cooked the books, no-one gets a look in when it gets to the finals with no refs.
If theres no way of winning and lots of brawling, makes me think twice about bringin the boys.
We can do without the madness & injuries.
