Let me start by saying that the POTW award shouldn't have gone to the Wookie last week, any and all results incurred against Bundaberg should be completely disregarded as they flat out SUCK. I would've been more comfortable had it gone to someone who earnt their production last week - take your pick from Scott Cook, Dave Gurney, Ryan Stolberg, Andy Goodwin, John Fitzgerald, Cam Tragardh or Jase Aucoin.
A few further thoughts before my previews ....
- what the f*** happened to Logan against South West. Give up the three ball Gureckis!
- great team effort from the Neers to beat the Eagles. Piok was a nobody not too long ago, and came through with a solid haul.
- Chris Cedar outperformed his bigger brother for the first time ever?
- Dante Sykes' new nickname should be TO.
- Maroochy vs Bundy for the spoon.
Mackay @ Caboolture
Despite what the generic BQ preview would have you believe, Caboolture haven't got a hope in hell of taking this one. Fitz, Col, Deba and Kruger will have a field day. Mackay by 30.
Mackay @ Bundaberg
Ugh. Mackay by 55.
Townsville @ South West
Gutsy performance by the Pirates last week, but they won't come close this time around. Townsville by 28.
Toowoomba @ Rockhampton
Opening night for the Rockets, who will feast upon the visitors. Rockhampton by 25.
Logan @ Ipswich
Match of the week. Stollie vs Thalo should be awesome, and there are various other evenly-poised matchups. If Lloyd Lewis stands up, the game is Ippy's. Ipswich by 2.
Caboolture @ Brisbane
Intriguing game. Barty sat out half a game with injury last week, and Hammo didn't play at all. If these two don't play, the Suns are a good chance .... buuuuuuut that scenario is unlikey. Barty to keep Slim quiet, and the Caps to get up over the Suns, who would be deflated from a huge loss the previous night. Brisbane by 12.
Townsville @ Gold Coast
Both teas have three or four dependable players, but little else after that. I'm going with the Coast simply because they'll have the fresher legs. Gold Coast by 4.
Toowoomba @ Gladstone
Potential for a close match here. The Neers import will go against Wookie, and they have plenty of bodies to go against Blair and Simanic. Gladstone only have three main players, and need contributions from elsewhere. I'd like to tip the visitors, but the road trip to Gladstone sucks. Gladstone by 8.
Northside @ Maroochydore
Plenty of bench run for the Wizards. Northside by 45.
who am i kidding world war 3 in qld wouldnt change my odds...
Caboulture v Mackay
any team with a first 5 including Deba, Fitz, Oriad n Krugs is goin to be a good chance of winning.. iv heard Jett has some Jets but i dont think he can fly over Mets for 48mins.. would love to be in the crowd for this one cos the Dunk comp in the warm-up between Deba n Jett will be awesome i think Deba will that an then go onto to win the game... $50 on Mets
Mkay 2:1 Suns 12:1
Bundy v Mkay
Clyde is a scary looking dude im not sure even Kruger can handle him but other than that the mets are tough and when you have two un16 twins on the bench your goin to struggle against this calibre team... Mets to be at top of the table after this weekend $50 on Mkay
Mets 1:1 Bulls 18:1
South W v Tville
only 8 pirates no wonder sum ppl are p!ssed from last w-end.. dont think they can do it twice in a row tho.. cedar bro's to drop 20+ a piece an drink with alberts after the game.. $50 on Heat
Heat 2:1 SW 8:1
Rocky v Twmba
1st game of the season for the richest team in Australia to have not won a National Title is this their year??? cowboys have a big drive to get there an unfortunately its in vain, one of the best crowds in the comp wil drink the bar dry cheering for the first of many Ws for Rocky. is Brown the biggest man in the QABL? be interestin to see how he goes against the top seeds.. $75 on Rocky
Rocky 1.5:1 Neers 19:1
Ippy v Logan
both these teams were talked up by themselves an others in the preseason an they both seem to have choked at the first hurdle, the good news is if they both choke this week at least one of them still gets a win.. this could come down to a battle of the ass coaches cos "Apparently" they do majority of the coachin.. so im goin to go with the team with 2 ass coaches.. $2 on Logan
Logan 7:1 Force 8:1
Brissie v Caloundra
when ur playin above the rim 2 games in 2 nites is a tough ask.. if caps get an early lead they can finish it early but if you give the Mcglynn boys a sniff they'll hump the sh!t out of you... so im callin either a caps blowout or suns by 3.. $25 on Caps
Caps 3:1 Suns 4:1
GCoast v Ville
this is goin to be a goodie (an yes i mean that literally) Goodie playin well backed up a lit better than Cam T was last week will mean trouble for the lizards.. good chance for south to beat north here but my money is stayin with POD $25 on heat
Heat 3:1 GC 5:1
Power v Twmba
hhmmm 48mins of full court press v rocky the nite before after an 11 hr drive, although they have someone bigger then wookie he's prettier and looking for another huge dub double an he if he doesnt troy robinson will... if they keep there legs the soft butterlike rings in Gladdy will help them but i'm still puttin a hungey on my boys.. $100 on power
Power 3:1 Neers 7:1
Maroochy v North Side
both teams coming off a loss last week if Dante decides he really is MJ an doesnt pass the ball anymore Clips can keep this close if he realises that having the NBL's most improved player is good thing they maybe in trouble.. Dunc to get a bigger dub Dub then Cam T but Wiz to take the W.. $50 on Wiz
Wiz 2:1 Clips 11:1
spare a thought for the diggers as you enjoy(if you can) your long weekend.. as usual all bets are in ukranian dollars...

Helps if you're twice the size of the whole opposition team put together and your teammates are mostly allergic to rebounds. I'm sure Kingma will still put up good numbers against most teams but yeah at this point games v's Bundy should be considered reserve grade.

not sure if you have played with kingma, you could litteraly have the ball in your hands and he will take it, the man is a monster that never dunks it.

Bundy boys are undermanned at the moment but help on the way.....

Alright, time for another crack at the womens comp this weekend. See if i can do any better than the 5 out of 8 i called last week.
Cabooltule v Mackay
Caboolture with a surprise win last week against the Clippers might find it a bit harder this week. Shooting only 23% from the field just isnt going to be good enough against a team with the likes of Kelly Wilson in it. Cabooltures only hope is if they zone it up and Mackay cant hit a shot. Mackay should be the good bet for this one after getting some confidence last week by beating Cairns well in Cairns and then leading the Flames early before getting steamrolled in the second half. I reckon Mackay by 25 here.
Bundaberg v Mackay
The main question here is how are the Meteorettes going to handle their 4th game in a row on the road and the drive up to Bundy after Friday nights game against Caboolture. On talent the Mackay girls should get the win. The Bundy coach should be looking to run the ball lots to try and exploit the tired legs for Mackay and who know an upset could be in the making. Mackay to get the double for the weekend with a 15 point win here.
Rockhampton v Toowoomba
The girls from up the mountain were very dissapointing last week, I hope their import is going to lift their game a little. Its a long trip from up the mountain to Central Queensland and the Cyclones will be out to make a winning start at home. Big X factor here is the fact the this will be Rocky's first hit out as a group full stop, they didnt play any pre-season games so how rusty will they be as a group? I will go with Rockhampton by 20 here.
South West v Townsville
The Flames were very tardy out of the gates last weekend against Mackay, something they probably dont want to start making a habbit of. When they woke up though they crushed the Meteorettes and put a lot of points on the board, will they break the 100 point barrier in this game? Hopefully South West got their admin sorted out this week and got clearances for their 2 imports who they needed desperately last week against Logan and even more so this week. Townsville against no imports by 60, against imports by 30.
Ipswich v Logan
Both of these teams got first up wins against pretty ordinary opposition. From all accounts Logans import looks the goods and she could be the deciding factor here. If Logan manage to keep Stefanovic quiet they should win this game easy. What tricks in Cockrem going to have up here sleeve to through a curve ball at the Thunder. This game is where my upset of the week is being predicted and the Ipswich girls getting up by 4.
Brisbane v Caboolture
Brisbane showed last week that they can put a lesser stregth team to the sword and i would imagine they are going to do the same this week. Cabooltures confidence will dive after getting belted by Mackay on Friday night. I predict Korst is going to have a field day in this game with nobody from Caboolture being able to guard her. Brisbane by 25 here.
Gold Coast v Townsville (Game of the week)
Gold Coast did a great job, in the same manor as the Capitals, of putting the pitiful Wizards away but this test for the Gliders is as tough as they come. They have the bonus of the Flames on the second game of a road trip and you would think the Goldie coach might be up doing some scouting on Saturday night. Stubbs and Abbott wont have it their own way like they did last weekend and their matchups against Smith and Edgar should be great to watch. I think the Flames just have a little too much depth for the Gold Coast team which is evident by their 40 points off the bench last weekend. I will go for the Flames by 15 in what will be a tight struggle most of the way but the Flames class finding a way to pull away in the last quarter.
Gladstone v Toowoomba
I might make this prediction today after going and playing some two-up for the ANZAC's. Seriously I have no idea with these two run of the mill teams who will be anchored down the bottom of the ladder this season. Im going to go with Toowoomba simply because you would hope they got an import for a reason and that would be to win easy games like this one. The Mountaneers by 12.
Maroochydore v Northside
The clash of two teams who really struggled to put points on the board last week. Anyone struggling with insomnia get to Maroochydore for this game, a warm glass of milk and you should be sleeping like a baby. Hopefully they prove me wrong and put some points on the board. Im gonna go with Maroochydore, surely they need to be better than last week, by 10 at home.

Kelly's Queen of the court (http://www.dailymercury.com.au/storydisplay.cfm?storyid=3770670)
April 25, 2008
BASKETBALL: Mackay Dixon Homes Meteorettes coach Scott McKenzie reckons prized recruit Kelly Wilson is in the "top two or three" players in the league after a standout performance last weekend.
The WNBL talent claimed the QABL women's player of the week award after the team's round one games, which included a 14 point win over Cairns and a loss to Townsville.
In the clash with Cairns, Wilson picked up 16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.
Although the team succumbed to Townsville, Wilson still produced an impressive effort against her former club, with 27 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
While a modest Wilson felt her form "wasn't great", coach Scott McKenzie said she had a "very good weekend".
And his side will be relying on her to carry them to victory when they clash with the Caboolture Suns at Caloundra tonight.
"She's a great leader for our group," McKenzie said.
He said Wilson would have an "enormous" impact on the team this season.
McKenzie was also impressed with how the young Mackay players performed in round one.
The 4MK Good Guys Mackay Meteors got their season off to a blazing start last weekend when they notched up a three point win over defending ABA champions Cairns before going down to Townsville by four points.
Tonight they face a Caboolture team that sits at the top of the QABL ladder after a comprehensive 44 point victory over the Maroochydore Clippers in round one.
Caboolture's US import Bryan Jett is one player the Meteors will look to contain after he picked up 34 points and 18 rebounds against the Clippers.
Tonight's clash is part of a tough road trip for the Meteorettes and the Meteors, with both sides completing round two tomorrow night with games away to Bundaberg.

Coastal Suns to generate new heat (http://www.thedaily.com.au/news/2008/apr/25/coastal-suns-generate-new-heat/)
25 April 2008
The Coastal Suns women basketballers are going to fight some Fire when they meet Mackay tonight in the QABL second round match with their own bit of solar-generated heat.
Suns coach Paul Saltmarsh believes their signing this week of Brisbane and former Queensland Academy of Sport key player Bree Warren as “another missing part of the puzzle” as they aim up for a tilt at the premiership.
Her debut at her new home stadium in Caloundra will help counter the “punching” power around the court of former WNBL Fire player Kelly Wilson and veteran Mackay Meteor force Fiona McGrath.
Warren was a part of the QAS junior development program and after finishing secondary school found herself in Tasmania playing in the strong South East Australian Basketball League (featuring Victorian and Tasmanian teams) for Launceston.
In 2005 she was SEABL under 21 Young Player of the Year runner-up and Saltmarsh believes her experience and her height will play a crucial part in helping defenders like Marnie Saunders and Sharni Green shut down the Meteors.
He said defensive pressure transferring to rapid attack was the key a win tonight as the Suns seek momentum in the comp.
Warren said she had been looking for a change of scene from Brisbane and a move to Caloundra, which opened the season with a win over Maroochydore, fitted the bill perfectly.
“They are a good bunch of girls and Salty is a very good coach so I’m looking forward to playing there.”
Her only reservation is playing Brisbane tomorrow night – walking into the “opposition” dressing room.
“I was pretty apprehensive when I saw we had Brisbane in my second game, but I know all the girls well and I don’t think there’ll be any rough stuff.”
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn .....
Close games at Caloundra tonight. Mackay only up by 8 in the women, and 10 in the men. Slim put up good numbers yet again, and held Oriard to low output. Kruger did nothing. Fitzy with a strong all round game.

I was at the game last night at cal. and ill tell you now i think mackay was lucky to get away with the win (had nothing to do with underestimating), was a 3point game with 3minutes left, mackay simply made plays down the stretch. suns boys looked tired late and just didnt make plays when they needed to but had the game i thought. jett was good for the suns as was rocky, andrews shot the ball well, macglynn didnt look himself out there. will be interesting to see with how much court time guys got last night if the suns can back up down in bris. will be a gd game i think.

Kruger just didnt have a good night, he got a couple of cheap fouls early and was forced to sit bench. then late in the game matt m. bitch slaped him on the back of his leg, dont know how refs missed it? he showed the crowd the big red mark it left, it was quite funny, but just showed how much of an idiot matt is. I mean who does that??? other teams watch out for bitch slaping.
great game but.

Looking at the boxscore i dont really see how anyone played well. well shot well for that matter.
Horrible shooting! what was the shot selection like for anyone who was at the game?
Took fitz 20 shots to get 25pts ( 1 ast for 41 mins at the point) may need a change there when zane comes in.
Jett 23 shots for 22pts
george 18 shots for 18pts
oriad 18 shots for 12pts
Krugs 2pts 1 rbs for the game geez.

Girls's defence was quite impressive, ended up with the WIN, should I say the biggest upset. Well done Suns.

Looks like the only difference with the suns is 28pts/22rbs/7blks. Maybe they should just have kept fouling him as it seems he had trouble from the line.
Maybe he should take lessons from Thalo who shot 19/20 from the line.

man they are good, just cruzed to a 42 point win over the mountin men, did not shoot that well benny t had a tough night but still the best player in aba, reece looked good out there, new import is a hussler that does nothing but rebound and play defence is a machine on the boards, wiegh would have top scored with at least 25.
toowoomba import is a big boy and very slow got a block early in the game and gave the dont bring it in my house shake, took him a while to get the ball but got a couple of dunks.
He got subed off and the rocky crowd gave it to him heaps and he gave the finger to the crowd, I could not believe it. the rest of the neers had a tough night lots of turnovers and no real structure with piok and glover running the point, gurney probably got 20 pts.

Just checked out the box scores. Neers only hit 1 from 21 from the arc, and that was by their center :) .... 4.8% shooting..

Looks like the Mountain Men made up for that shooting today - came back from over 20 down to win by 1 over Gladstone!! Women also won!!!!!!!
Way to go Neers!!!!

I will have $100,000 on Logan and $100,000 on Ipswich
Not sure why you would do that, since the game is finished i would have $200,000 on Logan?
I find it amusing how people go out and try and be smart by having a go at 2cents predictions, hes not actually doing bets, its just a little fun, join in rather then being so critical...

Congratulations to Salty and the girls on a great win. Had to make up a lot of ground after dismal shooting in the first half but brought it home.

Brendan Teys with 28 against townsville and 26 the week before not bad for an 18 year old. Anyone reckon he has what it takes to be a future NBL player?

Pipped at the post (http://www.gladstoneobserver.com.au/storydisplay.cfm?storyid=3770809)
April 28, 2008
PORT City Power was left bitterly disappointed after their 94-93 loss to Toowoomba at Kevin Broom Stadium in Gladstone yesterday.
The game proved to be a brilliant display of skill and endurance and Port City looked dominant for the majority of the game.
However, after leading by as much as 20 points at one stage in the third quarter, Toowoomba started creeping back until they tied 93 all.
Power gave away a painful penalty free-throw in the last ten seconds when Toowoomba pulled ahead.
Toowoomba's new man, Bruce Brown, looked the part, probably an inch shy of Kingma but likely heavier and slower.
The defence was good on Toowoomba's part early in the match, although they seemed to slackened as the game progressed. Once again, Port City player Aaron Nagas was right there for his team mates ready to assist and make the basket.
Also on the Port City side, Daniel Simanic was right on target, shooting several good three pointers with defenders right in his face.
Surprisingly, Michael Kingma made a few tricky jump shots not usually the forte of Power forwards of his stature.
Port City had a marginal lead at the end of the first quarter up 29-31 against what appeared to be a struggling Toowoomba team.
Toowoomba's demonstrated lack of discipline in the key should have been their undoing as they gave away free throw after free throw.
Other standout player was Port City's Nick Andrew who just kept sinking free throws one after the other, allowing his team to capitalise on these penalties early on.
Ultimately, Toowoomba kept hacking away at a quickly tiring Port City squad and who put in a good effort but got robbed of what should have been a decisive win.

Rockets launch title assault with 42-point victory (http://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/storydisplay.cfm?storyid=3770822)
April 28, 2008
LOCAL basketball star Stephen Weigh made a welcome return to Hegvold Stadium on Saturday night to launch the Rockhampton Stadium Nightclub Rockets' 2008 QABL title assault.
Weigh hit a game-high 30 points in the Rockets' commanding 101-59 victory over the Toowoomba Mountaineers in their opening game of the season.
The 21-year-old, who has returned home for a shot at the NBL after two seasons playing college basketball in the US, said yesterday it was "great" to be back playing at Hegvold Stadium.
"I've been looking forward to that moment for a long time," he said.

Clippers run with QABL opponents but fall short (http://www.thedaily.com.au/news/2008/apr/28/clippers-run-qabl-opponents-fall-short/)
28 April 2008
More effort was what Maroochydore Clippers’ men’s coach Michael Redman wanted from his basketballers yesterday and that’s what they delivered.
But after matching the Northside Wizards for the first quarter of their QABL match at Maroochydore Stadium, the Clippers weren’t able to keep the defensive clamps on NBL player Cameron Tragardh, who scored a game-high 36 points in his team’s 113-86 victory.

On Saturday night, the Coastal Suns completed a double against the Brisbane Capitals in Brisbane.
Import Bryan Jett starred with 28 points and 22 rebounds, and had good help from Brent Andrews (26 points) as the Suns’ men triumphed 93-82.

Definite potential! However the "top dogs" see potential in Steve Broom- when Teys is right under their noses....compare these two guys stats and that says it all. Steve would prob have it on rebounds but that would be expected. Check everything else and there's no comparison.
Go Teysie!!!! Just keep doing what you're doing and one day they may figure it out.

An outta shape Lloyd Lewis is still better value then Broom, he could not make a post move on Lloyd as Lionel Ritchie would say "All night long". I agree Teys is a gun, if QLD isn't careful he will be lost to a southern team, even worse an international team (Slingers - Fitzy).

I would take broom over lewis in my team anyday, llyod had his chance with the bullets and now broom getting his, they dont pick dev players for looks they have to see potential there, teys will get his shot with his name out there for playing state and putting up good numbers.

Is there a rule that says how long you can be a development player for.? Just wondering..
I would take Broom over Lloyd any day.
I don't know what it is, but Lloyd turns into a slug whenever he comes back to QLD. This, despite the fact from many sources he plays admirably over in college.
Broom is prepared to work, is quicker and more athletic.

Slug or not he still schooled Broom on the weekend despite scoreline Lloyd was solid as a rock on Saturday night

For all you people that just announced they would take broom before lewis, thank god you all are not coaches around here! Not only did lewis school broom on the weekend, but he is a MUCH better passer, a MUCH better defensive player in and out, and on the court, despite what goes on off, on the court he is a good leader and works just as hard as the next person! "on the court"
Its funny how no one who has ever played with Lloyd bags him, and probably not people who play against him! But I will agree I would take broom over a Bundaberg Lloyd, but not right now and definitely not nearing the end of the season, your right Lloyd had ONE year at the Bullets, how many has broom had now!
One more thing if and when I did pick Lloyd, I would make sure I got him into shape, because I don’t think many can argue that Lloyd in shape is one of the toughest match ups going around!
Not sure why you would do that, since the game is finished i would have $200,000 on Logan?

Are you serious mate??
Ive played against both Broom & Lewis a few times, and although Broom is very good, id say Lewis is a very solid player. Heaps harder to lock down, and make a move on.
Just my 2c anyways.

Both Steve and Lloyd have been blessed with some great natural ability but they are both as lazy as each other.
They both had some great opportunities (such as bullets and os) but they just haven't got the brains to actually work hard and take advantage of them.
They should both have been playing NBL by now.
Much better team players around I would pick before these two..

Big Bull beefs up Bundy team (http://www.news-mail.com.au/storydisplay.cfm?storyid=3770971)
April 28, 2008
AFTER securing giant centre Clyde Ellis, the Bundaberg Bulls season has again been bolstered by the acquisition of 2.06 metre American Jay Anderson. Arriving in Australia for the first time yesterday, Anderson was plucked from New Zealand by the Bulls in a bid to liberate them from last position in the Queensland Australian Basketball League. Playing in Romania, Germany, Dominican Republic and New Zealand, the 26-year-old said his new surroundings matched it with the best. "It's my first time in Australia, it's beautiful and I like it here," Anderson said. "Right now I'm just here for the season, but if things change I'd loved to stay longer but I think I am going to Europe." Former Otago Nugget Anderson said he was looking forward to partnering with fellow bash brother Ellis. "The last team I was with I was the only big guy, so I am looking forward to playing with a big guy who can bang underneath," Anderson said. Ellis echoed Anderson's excitement for consolidating a brittle Bulls frontline. "I'm definitely thrilled, it's going to help us a whole lot," Ellis said. "It will be a big impact for us, he's a really talented 6'9 player. "He's got a whole lot of talent with him and we'll be good as a team with him." Bulls coach Michael Van Dongen said Anderson would alleviate some of the pressure from their shooters. "He will definitely bring another scorer, which will be good to take some of the heat off the scorers," Van Dongen said. "He will help Clyde on the board, plus he's a good shooter that will add to our group." Playing college ball at the University of Oregon, Anderson learnt his trade at one of the most well-respected sports campuses in America. Bulls face a bye this week, returning to the court May 10 at Century 21 Stadium against the Logan Thunder. The Thunder feature former Bulls import Todd Meyerding.

Chris Goulding is better than Teys, he is tearing up the SEABL for spartans and is a only a fringe development player for the bullets, i dont think teys is an NBL talent, but certainly a good guard for ABA standards
Good to see the Bulls have got a second import, they sure need it. Anyone got any word on how the new bloke has performed in the past?

I agree with the lazy thing but have to say Lewis is a GREAT team player, is a good ON court leader and very unselfish, no doubt they are both talented and probably haven't worked as hard as they could though. By season's end Lloyd will be one of the toughest players in the league if he stays fit and plays hard for wello and the ippy boys

But think back a couple of years to when Goulding was 18. You don't think Teys could improve along similar lines, considering what he has shown so far? And Bubbles is much better than a 'fringe development player' too by the way, even sounds like he could be in line for a full contract spot with the Bullets next season.
