Townsville @ Gladstone - Gladstone have to win a decent game before they start getting any cred, and I don't think it will come here. They have the bigs to trouble Townsville, but I think the Townie guards will get it done. Townsville by 15.

Cairns @ Northside - Tough game here. James Comino big last week to get the Fish past the Caps. Despite their no-frills squad, I think the Cairns guards will trouble the Wizards backcourt too much. The Wizards really need star guard Dante Sykes to start playing a team game. Cairns by 7.

Logan @ Bundy - Word is that Bundy will have their two imports on board, but regardless their team is still average. Logan by 22.

Townsville @ Rockhampton - Rocky showed they're mortal last week, scraping past Logan by the smallest of margins. They are a different entity at home, and I think they'll take this without much trouble. Rockhampton by 14.

Brisbane @ Ipswich - Two teams playing below their potential. Could go either way, but I'm picking Ipswich to finally break their duck. Will Lloyd and Stollie ever play well at the same time? Ipswich by 8.

Northside @ Caboolture - Simmering talk is that Slim's hot form may see him get a lookin with an NBL side next season. Arguably the comp's best two big men going at it here. Don't think the Suns have enough spare parts to get the Wizards, although will be a tight game. Northside by 4.

Cairns @ South West - South West killing it right now. They have to lose somewhere, but it's hard to pick against them on current form. South West by 6.

Ipswich @ Maroochydore - Unfortunately this will be a training run for the Ippy boys. Ipswich by 40.

Toowoomba @ Gold Coast - Anybody have observations of the Neers import? I hear he is another dud, which is disappointing. Gold Coast to take this at home. Gold Cost by 8.

Out: Hammo, Barty, Beak, Olssen. Big opportunities for some of the younger squad members to contribute. Injuries have killed the caps this year, they are yet to suit up their strongest team.

Anybody have observations of the Neers import?
Only seen him play against Rocky but it looks like he's probably only really of much use when getting a deep catch in the post for the power dunk, grabbing boards, and clogging up the middle. He's slow which makes him foul prone and also means that the defense has plenty of time to run a help defender at him. He still wants to score though which is why his fg% isn't too flash right now (throwing up a shot when crowded by 2 or 3 guys).

Could be handy if used right. He's big enough so that he shouldn't have much trouble establishing good position against most players and get the deep catches he needs. Just has to be smart about it. He won't be allowed to just back guys down like he'd be used to so he'll have to make good cuts through the key, spin and seal under the basket, look for the offensive board or lob if his man fronts the post, etc. Probably could get you around 16pts @ 60-70 FG%, 12reb, 2blks in 30 mins a game if used right. Doesn't sound like a lot for an import but the key is the FG% and if he can also get the Neers shooters open with some picks he'll be worth it.

That said I think the more likely scenario is that he'll continue to play like he has so far. 6'10" guys with his bulk don't grow on trees and if they are fit enough and smart enough to play the game right (even with no skills other than catching and dropping the ball in the hoop) they'll be able to make all kinds of leagues better than the QABL.

I don't think you can judge the guy from the Neers Rocky/Gladdy roadtrip as that was the guys first hitout in Oz with new team mates.

He is a legit BIG BODY..!!!
His biggest problem at the moment is his fitness but he is working on that. After that his other big problem is getting the ball off the other 11 guards in the Neers team. :)

He is an excellent team player and the kids and crowds absolutly love him up on the mountain. I think if he can get his big butt in shape he could be the difference that will see this team going to the finals. I would definately not call the guy a dud. Take a trip down the coast this Sunday and have a look for yourself Benny... ;)

Confirmed that Wizards caused the upset, knocking off Cairns 100-87 at the Boondall Sports Centre tonight. Sykes had 37 points and contributed far more to the team effort tonight than in previous games. Trigger had a decent night as well, scoring 35 and snatching 9 boards. Didn't help Cairns that they shot 30/90 from the field, as opposed to Northside who hit about 54%. Top quality game though

rocky beat townsville by 30 last night, cedar looked scoreless in hte first half with steve weigh all over him and couldnt buy a basket, lead out to 30 just after half time and just crused through the game,

Pirates same coaching staff as last few years - dave derwin and ace, but JC is "player / coach"

Ok so we are only a little part into the season but i am going to have a crack now at the finals match-ups for later in the year based on what has been seen so far. I know its a long way out from the end but it might start up some healthy debate.

Womens Quarter Final Match-ups

Townsville - Bye (finishing on top of the ladder)
Mackay hosting Rockhampton
Maroochydore hosting Caboolture
Gold Coast hosting Logan

The women's comp is pretty clear cut and I would be extremely surprised if these were not the match-ups. Only other team i could maybe see involved is Cairns if they squeezed out Rockhampton as the next best in the north.

I would rather talk about the womens team, who kept Townsville in their sights for most of the game (only down by about 10 untill the 4th quarter) expect them to be the big improvers for the year and get a few unexcepted wins.

Surely you are getting a little to excited a little early. Let's see how the Logan girls go when they play someone with some talent. They have only played South West, Ippy, Rocky and Bundy so far who have a combined record of 5-11.
