$65 per player for State trials today. No cuts for 3 sessions, great money spinner with $35 per player for next 2 trials. Heard it was boring and a total waste of time anyway.

I agree with previous post, overpriced for little benefit. And yes my kid does have the commitment and passion but doesn't have to worry about costs like the poor sucker parents have to.

Ok, thats understandable..
We have come to the conclusion it was overpriced.
But do you really think there is no benifit?
If your child makes the team, they get to represent their state in a sport which they love.
Don't you think thats a little bit of a benifit?
Even if they don't get in they have experienced a state level of basketball training, this can only help them to get better.
All the bottom aged people (because apparently there is so many of them) can use it as a learning curve and let it help them improve!

Just think if your child went out to the shopping mall, movies or theme park for the same amount of time as was spent at the state trials a comparable amount if not more money could have been spent by that child.
Lets face it to some families basketball is a cheap sport to participate in compared to a kid who does motocross, then it could be thought of as expensive to a rugby players parents who pays one lump sum at the beginning of the season and thats it. No weekly game fee for the rest of the season. The winners in sport are the participants who get the enjoyment and satisfaction out of it and yes sometimes children dont really comprehend the cost to their parents money and time wise but as parents we want to do the best that we can for our kids happiness and where theres a will theres a way.

Nicely said!!
I agree with the previous post!!
I have never thought about it the way you explained about the shopping center.
Smart thinking.
That's really true and i know my daughter can demolish $35 in about 10 mins. let alone if she was there instead of being at state trials for the whole day!!

Surely State trials are just that....State Trials!!
Usually the top players of each team try out.
Lets not kid ourselves parents & coaches....these girls know where their abilities lie!!
More court time for weaker players goes a long way....with no extra cost to finances or confidence!!!

I believe parents know deep down if there kid has the potential to make a state team and if the kid hasnt 'got it' they are not going to say to their kid I dont think you should trial, what they do is let the kid go ahead and trial, have the learning experience as stated in the earlier post and maybe the kid will realise hey I need to improve here, there whatever. No harm done besides a less skilled player may have other attributes coaching staff are looking for and can build on that. Who knows if an opportunity is there - its for the taking win or fail.

You know you are very right. It's been my experience that the kids themselves quickly work out, accept, adjust and then find their niche within the pecking order or skill level of a sporting group. I'm constantly amazed and heartened by the good nature of children toward each other and their interaction within the group this way. It seems that it's when we adults with our unfulfilled desires and vicarious needs get involved that jealousy and conflict seems to occur. I'm also still amazed at the unrealistic impressions some parents have of their child's ability and skill level and the ill feeling and sometimes embarrassment to the child that they will cause on the strength of this unfounded impression which is nothing more than an overdose of parental love and pride. There's a line in the parents code of conduct which is very relevant to this about kids playing sport for their benefit not ours.
When a kid goes along to a State trial they soon know for themselves how high the bar is set and where they are in relation to the bar height. So long as their parents remain supportive and not pushy with the transport and fees the kid can decide to continue testing themselves against the best of their age group and under the instruction of the (alleged) best coaches in the State or they can take whatever from the initial experience and concentrate on their club or rep level game first before launching a bid for state. Handled properly by we parents the experience can be a winner for the kids.

Interesting firstly that you made the last 4 posts.
Also interesting that at least 2 of your top 5 have already lost games, one team going down by about 70 and the other by about 30. Those sort of margins don't say "top 5" or that their opposition fluked a win that big.
Toowoomba may be pretty good. still too early to pick. did your team beat sw purple on the weekend?

In no particular order Goldie, SW,Logan, SD,BBi Capitals. Far too early to predict, could change if transfers from other states happen, players go up or down from Prem to Suncup.
no players go up or down from pl and sc. once teams played in grading tournament there was no changes allowed.

I thought you could make changes up until week 4, as this is when you have to name your top 7 players in PL.
Each PL team must nominate a top 7, SC teams don't have to... But if you had a capitals and Silver in div1, like in 18s, they can't swap between each other.

a good point! There are a few good bottom age girls but are they any better than the top girls? Possibly some are just as good, but like in previous years , the older girls have more experience and maturity and seem to be to handle the pressure easier. Its great they are having U15 State teams now. Mentally and physically the bottom age girls will benefit. Think most of the top age girls that make the team are more than capable.

Whilst they arent exactly State teams nor National Championships they compete in, they are a great concept embraced to introduce younger players to the pressure, intensity and off court requirements of an Australian Championship in preparation for State selection to Nationals. In past years it was identified that a number of players (mainly in the U/16's) were shocked and unprepared for the requirements of a Nationals Championship thus detracting from their performance and the performance of the team overall. Attending this tournament in NSW beforehand gives coaches and managers the opportunity to "road test" players before selection to State and to prepare everyone for the experience that lies ahead. The smarter coaches used to do this "experience" with their players during the Regional championships but we dont have them anymore.

Your right about the mental maturity of the bottom age girls. Some still only aged 12. The Logan, Cairns and SW girls have recently experienced club nationals and a couple about to experience school nationals. A great learning experience in progress for these girls.

Only Oli and Gretal were in the team last year although Oli had to pull out due to injury.
Those 5 girls previously mentioned have to work for their spots and other girls have just as much chance to get in as them.

Yes, i agree with you. When you start playing at the level the girls are at, players need to have both a high level of commitment and skill. I am certain the majority of the girls mentioned have those abilities. Not sure which girls you are referring to about attitude and commitment??

Attitude and commitment - since when has this been relevant!!!! State coaches pick players on ability and talent, doesn't seem to matter about anything else. They will make their selections on position, height, association and political correctness. Good luck to all players who give 150%, give up everything else for their passion of basketball, believe that all is fair and equal, and rely on the ethics and judgement of the so called experts. Be ready for your disappointments and don't complain.

Amazing, you come on here hididing behind a computer, not willing to have the courage to stand behind your comments and talk of fariness??
How would you know what state coaches base their selections on?? There is NO Way to know if you do indeed have a clue? Its a lot easier to cowardly hide behind the guest tag and take potshots.
What a great example you set for your child!!

It was made clear to parents at the very first U16 trials what selectors are looking for. As said in another post kids soon find where they are in the pecking order, accept that and continue on happily to just be a part of it all. Final selections always hold surpise/shock omissions/inclusions thats basketball through and through year after year. Get used to it.
I thought you were supposed to play a sport for the enjoyment....

This post is dumb. Obviuosly the pick of the bottom age players have been selected in the under 15 side. However, being young, things can change fairly quick so some others may catch up to this group before years end.
The best top age u16 girls will be identified as the season goes as the state team gets selected, you may even see some of those bottom ageers in there too.

a win is a win!! But when teams like gold coast are missing Gretel and Payton and Brisbane are missing Oli and Emily, of course they are going to be weaker then if they had their full strength team on the court. I think the ladder will change when all players are back from injury. Should be a good competition with a few different results.

I don't think this is becoming a slanging match. Reality is that Logan seems to be at their full strength with no injuries. Brisbane, Gold Coast and Spartans WERE missing at least one maybe two in some cases of their starting five which makes the ladder more understandable. These three teams having been missing these girls from the second or third week.

It's pretty obvious that only Logan people read and comment on this site. Considering the last three posts have been directly about them (any prob 60% of the rest of the posts). Logan have won all their games so far, interesting how they fair this weekend against a strong Sout West team?? Gold Coast also had a big win so they are back in full force. Brisbane still to field a full team. I think there will still be some interesting games to come!!

Yes, i think they were just giving the ideas for the squad.
Who else is there?
There is a girl from northside who is reasonably good.

Think maybe saying quite a few bigs is bit of an exageration. The couple with not a lot of commitment seem to be the ones always picked first though.

Its all about the height, they choose tall gumbies and hope that they can teach them some moves, namely be standing in the right place at the right time to rebound or receive the ball n put up the shot and hope theyre all round game will improve with time. Seen it year after year in basketball, sometimes it works other times not.

Representing your state is all about heart and soul. Ive seen lesser players get in state teams through sheer guts, determination and all round effort on and off the court.
Theres also good old fashioned 'butt kissing' or 'greasing up' by parents too.

a good point!
I do believe some of the bottom age girls will be more mentally and physically ready come state team announcement which is at least 5 months away. Mikala attending QAS, going to school nationals in a few days as a junior player in a predominantly senior team bar 1 other junior Ashley T. These 2 girls also played in D league this year as 12 year olds and held their own against older girls and women.

If you look at a number of the top age girls you could probably say the same about them. Spartans and Brisbane girls both played at the nationals in Under 14's as well. The schools nationals that your talking about is self nominated, so any school can nominate to play in Geelong. Can this be classed as an "elite athlete" achievement. Really feel someone is talking up the Logan girls, but big deal if they make state, they wont be the first bottom age girls to make it, and they wont be the last either. Regarding playing D league, stronger associations do not need to have 12 year olds playing in their D league teams as they have the depth to draw from much older girls. Associations like Logan, Wizards and smaller associations need to draw on the younger players. Great experience for the younger girls, doesn't mean they are so much better than the girls their own age group.

What a terrible negative attitude to take "big deal if they make state as bottom age" of course its a big deal you idiot. Its a great honour to represent your state at any age in any sport for that matter. Maybe not in your bitter eyes and as for Logan not having the depth of players, the association is only 8, 9 years young in a city not known for basketball. Gosh if you have children playing basketball I hope they never have to hear your comments, criticisms or words that you post on here.

Just because a person comments on here, doesn't necessarily mean they are a parent or have anything to do with girls involved. Of course if you were a parent you would realize it would be an honour to represent Queensland at any level in any sport, and be proud of their achievements.

I have to agree with you. I watched most of that game and Brisbane are on the way back to full strength. Sorry, but Spartans never seemed to be in the running to win that game. Oli and Emily are back after injury and started to play some strong basketball. With these two girls in zone defense it makes it very hard for the opposition to penetrate into the key. Sarah and Richa both seeemed to come to form on the night. I think the Brisbane team at its full potential will be hard to beat from here on in. Also watched some of the Logan and Brisbane 2 game. Some very talented young players in both teams. Brisbane held in there for most of the game but Logan pulled away in the last quarter. No 6 (I think it was) from Logan had a fantastic game. Some really good games to come in this age group. Keep up the good work girls!!!

I don't know why the previous comments needed to be made. Ashleigh is a wonderful player, as is Sarah. They play different positions, so only compete within their "teams". Ashleigh will be far more likely to make State. According to all the posts, Mikala will make state well before Sarah. Less guard positions! There are some great guards out there - I am sure the selectors will make decisions that are best for the State Team.

There are quite a few girls from both Brisbane and Spartans that I think will be worthy of making the state team. Ashleigh does seem to play a different position from Sarah, so they are hard to compare. Agreed, Mikala is also a great guard. I just hope the selectors make the right decisions and also think of the dynamics of the girls who would work as a team and not just a team of individuals. Merry Christmas to all the girls and their families.

You are kidding..the national schools tournament is an invitational tournament that ANY school can enter...even schools that have a basketball recruiting program....the winner is not the BEST team ever..it is the best team that ENTERS.... Victorian schools like Caulfield Grammar and Wesley Grammar did not go, as well as a host of Sydneey schools, if the Canberra high school with all the AIS girls had bothered to go, they would have cleaned up...please don't get ahead of yourself...national Schools tournament is a money making/BA junket...they even have different divisions for levels....

No offense, but this is getting into a slanging match about 14 and 15 year old girls who just want to play basketball and represent their state. These two girls are good players as are the majority of the squad selected. I think it is just a matter of what the coaches are looking for in who they pick. Maybe something on a more constructive note!! Any ideas who might make the final cut??

Of course Gretel would be in already. Sorry but I wouldn't put Cassie in the same league as Gretel. There are many girls in the squad that have the attitude and commitment to be there. There is more to a team then a few individuals!! as the saying goes - there's no (I) in team. The team should be girls who want to play together and not think they are better than anyone else. (especially the Under15's - they were lucky enough to be the first year to have an under 15 comp). Many of the girls have played in national competitions and are fully aware of the expectations put on them. Hopefully the right team will be picked in the end.

How do these in already players who have played minimal minutes for their associations throughout rep season qualify for state teams, isnt there a certain percentage you have to have played to be eligible. State is (should be) solely up to the coach it is their decision who they pick as this is the team they want who is best suited to the coaches style of play they want ehere team to play this is whether you agrree or not just remember its the coach on the chopping block if they dont come up to everyone expectations at nationals even when they dont have full say at times as to who they want
So everyone butt out and support the coaches decision at the end of selections

Thats so true. Gretel is awesome and her ability on the court is unquestionable. It doesn't really matter if she has not played many minutes for rep due to injury. Give the girl a break. She has represented your state at such a high level for a young girl. We should all be proud of her. The other thing is her ability off the court to be so humble and a nice person is remarkable.

Brisbane are really coming back with a lot of intensity and they should do well. Still have afew on going injuries though but they can get through it almost undefeated. Maroochy is also doing quite well but i think if everyone playing them gets their heads right, especially teams like SWM logan and Brisbane they wouldnt do very well.

Thought Maroochy beat SWM last weekend? Were there players missing from SWM? Think SWM, Logan, Brisbane and maybe Gold Coast if Gretel returns from injury will be in the semis.
Yes, I also think Brisbane will be there in the final. This group of girls have always been strong when they are top age. In under 14's I think they cleaned up winning regionals, winning Premier League,2nd in classics and going to nationals. From memory I think Jane McNabb coached and they were almost unbeatable. Logan have also had some good games and will be a team to watch. I think they went to nationals last year.

It amazes me how Spartans alway end up with a majority of players and state camps and in state squads. How can they be third last in the competition ladder? For a team of supposedly talented players they seem to be beaten by other teams with not so many "elite" players. Surely the scoreboard would be a good indication of how they play. Are they all individuals and dont play as a team or are they just not up to the standard of under 16s this year?

Gretel is an asset to any team and always seems to give 110%. With the other tall girls like Cassie (S/D), Emily and Oli (Bris). These four girls have the height, strength and ability to be some of the best players in the state. Could end up being one of the tallest teams at nationals if they make it. Then with fast shooting guards like maybe Mikala, Sarah, Winnie. Any ideas on who would play 2/3 positions? Would like to see all these girls play together, they would make an awesome team.

true, true, true!! plus with districts in the bottom three, how can they expect to have anyone in the state team. Even if you have a couple of talented players in the team (like other associations), they seem to be holding their own in the competition. But really, districts in this age have never been a fierce threat. The only reason they went to nationals in under 14's is because districts hosted in. They only came six in classics that year or something like that. Take G/C for example, if Gretel plays she lifts the whole team and makes a huge difference to their game play.

I think BBi Caps, SW, Logan and Maroochy for playoffs. On paper BBi Caps should get up with all the state trialists in the team having the benefit of top coaching and keeping extra fit for state. But you cant discount the other 3 teams either.
On paper you would think that BBI should win it, they have so many bigs and fairly mobile guards also. Maroochydore would also run in with a chance, their transition game is very good, not a lot of stars, but very mobile, and well coached. I dont think Logan are that strong, I think they have had their wins with top players being absent when they faced the strong teams, (dont get bitchy Logan just telling it like it is) Sth West have gotten off to a shakey start but could be the dark horse in this race. On paper Spartans should be up there, but looks as though they are out of the race altogether????? Good luck to all teams, it has been great to have so many close games, ........ win or loose!!!!!! Rather than travelling for miles to win by 100 points, just to finish with a cliche ........ basketball is the winner on the day!!!!!!

Lets get one thing straight districts might be where they are because of injury problem. Don't judge a team by where they come the classics isn't over yet! Every team are doing well it is all about developing. There are a lot of strong teams out there in this division. Good Luck to everyone.

Who has had inuries this season apart from Cassie? I think all the other teams have developed and Spartans haven't been up to the standard. And to be fairly honest, Cassie might have height on her side but I dont think she has the strength of most bigs in the comp this year.

It would be great if Spartans do make the top 4 as they should be up there, they have alot of talented girls in the team, it wasn't an attack just stating the facts, I wasnt sure if it was possible is what I was saying.

Unfortunately for Spartans, it doesnt look like they will make the top 4. Logan, Brisbane, SW, and either G/C or Maroochy look like they are the teams to beat. Maybe they will srop to div 2 and win the div to classics!!

The top 4 teams from Div 1. BBi Caps storming home and Goldie, Maroochy hanging in there Logan and SW appearing safe but I think it a 5 horse race now.
On paper if you go on previous state reps from primary even U16s last year Maroochy and Logan shouldnt even be in there but they are managing to hang on in there.
Bad luck to Spartans with all that depth. May the best team win which is any one of the above on any given day....

Well the ladder wont matter after the Grand finals. The way the top 4 have been playing lately there is no certainty who will even play off for Gold. Different teams can crumble or rise to the occasion especially as shown in past finals depending on who they play and numerous factors to take in to consideration.

From the Logan Website
Ashley played a "career game" against Gold Coast hitting and incredible nine (9) three pointers on her way to 35 points. What an outstanding effort from a "bottom age" player who still has another year to go in U16 Premier League. Although the side lost 74 - 76, Ashley's seven (7) three pointers in the second half kept them in the hunt.

There has to be a winner and a loser in the Logan v maroochy game. So one of the teams could possibility drop back into 5th place. Caps, SW and GC should all win on the weekend. GC play Ispwich which considering they bet them by around 60 points last time. This will bring their for and against way up and put them in the top 4. Amazing how one girl can change the whole position of a team on the ladder. Looks like Logan's winning streak has come to and end now they are playing the harder teams at full strength. (even if you shot 20 3 pointersm still doesnt win the game)

Refer BQ website BQJBC rules only points between games played of the two teams tied go towards determining final placings. A 60 point win to Gold Coast will not help GC into the top 4. They need to win and hope results their way. A tie with Logan will see Logan in. A tie with Maroochydore will see Gold Coast in. Should both Caps and SW win they will be tied with the winner of the Logan/Maroochydore game and only results from the games they played against each other will decide who get home finals. Caps and SW are not guaranteed wins so anything could happen.

Thats right Ashley used her brains and new her chances of scoring were better out on the perimeter than trying to drive on the tallest girl in U16s. Shes only 13 and still has lots to learn and doesnt claim to be a complete player as someone posted earlier that Gretels got it all, already.

gold coast were always going to be there cause there was always going to be a loser in the maroochy/logan game, and they could not stay on the same points. What a competition! How did Brisbane Caps get top of the ladder? I though we'd stay there - best percentage, awesome players.
Well good luck to all and see you in the finals!

Sarah Davis has by far been a stand out in the Brisbane 1 team.
Consistent too! She is a work horse.

Caps won 3 out of 4 games played between SW and Logan. SW beat logan twice lost to caps twice. Doesn't go on percentage.
Logan finished third. Won only 1 game out of 4 (Played caps when missing 4 players).
Brisbane have come home strong after injury. Good luck to all in the finals.

To supporters, relations, friends who talk players up on bendoes, do your honestly think state coaching and selection staff read bendoes, even if they do, they already no what potential each of the squad members has as future state reps. So talk all you want, in the end its up to the individual player 'have they done everything they possibly can to earn a place in the team.
And year after year when they do announce the team any state team boys or girls you will ALWAYS get the 'I cant believe she got in or I cant believe she didnt get in.
Thats life and politics in basketball.

Exactly right. So when people talk up players using CONSISTENT, WORK HORSE, thought we would be on top as WE have awesome players etc etc etc. Are these people worried about the team as a whole or just individuals. Top five teams had some really exciting games, isn't that what basketball should be all about!

And is it actually WE (the kids playing) that are doing the talking or the parents who wish they were?

Brisbane def Gold Coast by about 6. To keep everyone happy there were about 20 great players.
