my bookie for this week is Akhenaten from Egypt an here are his odds for rd 8

Tville v Bundy
bundy is goin to have to cut down the Cedar forest if they want any chance of winning this one.. with rocky suffering in their jocks last week in wat has been called by some as the toughest road trip in Australia dont know how bundy will go.. be interesting to see Cann's reception back on old home soil.. $10 on heat
Heat 2:1 Bundy 5:1

Cairns v Bundy
its Saturday nite in Cairns, and after seeing the female talent available in bundy I'd say the bulls are pretty keen to get out an enjoy the nitelife after this game.. bundy need Cann or Kyle to hit some big numbers to support monster an jay for a chance of making it a nite to remember.. $10 on Cairns
Cairns 2:1 Bundy 6:1

Pirates v Suns
if this game was an Olympic event it would be the 100m sprint.. both teams play fast paced its more of a case of hoping the other team trips over an lands flat on their proverbial face... i'm hoping this game goes into quintuple overtime tiring Suns out for their tough game the next day... $10 on Pirates..
SW 2:1 Suns 3.5:1

Force v Wiz
98pts in 2 games thats a feat that some womens teams struggle to do, Lewis an Stolle will have their hands full, not to sure what else the "coaching" staff have planned but if they let Cam score like that there is no chance they'll win not that the odds are looking good anyway.. $45 on Wiz
Wiz 2:1 Ippy 11:1

Meteors v Mountaineers
whys Deba george only gettin 20+mins a game?? is it true Neers really do watch brokeback mountain every road trip?? jus 2 of the questions surrounding this match-up... all i know for sure is im putting $20 on Mkay
Mets 2:1 Neers 6:1

Caps v Clips
if Caps can win this rugby match oh wait that was last week... with clips gettin talked up as a chance to break the drought lets hope its back to bball at auchenflower this week.. $20 on Caps
Caps 2:1 Clips 7:1

Sun v Power
sun v power sounds like an Ad for some hippy solar powered gizmo... no idea why SW (2hrs away) isnt playin this time slot an we are (5hrs away) not playing nite before but i guess BQ knows best and always makes the most logical decisions... $26 on power
Power 2:1 Suns 4.5:1

Goanna's v Logan
this could be game of week if both teams show up ready to play, with dr jekyl an miss hyde like performances from logan it's really up to them to take the potion.. is this the game where Gureckis earns his 6 digit salary? i'l say yes or if not sum1 from thunder will earn it for him.. $5 on Logan..
Logan 2:1 GC 2.5:1

all bets are in piasters or Egyptian pounds.. jus place them underneath your pillow before you go to sleep an the bookie fairy will collect them from you...

Gladstone over Caboolture???
Toowoomba over Mackay in Mackay???

Otherwise pretty spot on - think Ippy will lose but won't be by 20 and Brisbane will beat Maroochy by 30 plus.

Gladstone over Caboolture because they are fresh and Toowoomba over Mackay because not only is Fitzy gone but Oriad is out for the next 6 or so weeks with a broken arm!

Townsville Heat look to improve winning streak (http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2008/06/06/13702_sport.html)

STRONG defence will be the key for the Townsville Heat who will be looking to extend their four-game winning streak to five tonight.

The Heat, who have crept up to fourth spot on the QABL ladder, will be looking to hold the fort when they face up against 13th-placed Bundaberg Bulls tonight at SeaFM Stadium.

Mission possible, says Coastal Suns coach (http://www.thedaily.com.au/news/2008/jun/07/mission-possible-says-coastal-suns-coach/)

There are damn lies and then there are the QABL statistics which the Coastal Suns are keen to turn on their head in a double dose of truth or dare this weekend.

On the bald face of things, the competition ladder says their Saturday night away encounter with the unbeaten South West Metro Pirates appears mission impossible.

And tomorrow’s home match up against the 12th placed Gladstone Port City Power for 11th placed Suns seems ripe for the taking.

Went to watch the Slim Show over at Runcorn tonight.

Suns out to a quick 10-2 start, with Slim not starting after tweaking a slight knee injury during warmups. Pirates evened it up at 12-apiece, which is when Slim entered the game. He appeared somewhat hampered by his knee and I would imagine wasn't half as effective as what he normally is. JC kept him under wraps and the Pirates played some great pressing defence to take the lead and hold it for the rest of the game.

Slim was rested a few minutes into the third, when the Pirates led by 20. Ryan Parry had a shocker and looked like he wanted to be somewhere else. Rocky and Ben Mac toiled well.

JC unloaded from outside for South West, vintage shooting. Was impressed by the Pirates ability to pass the ball around for open looks, with many others like Niesler, Kurt and T2 benefitting.

Play of the game was Teys HUGE block on a Ben Mac layup in the last quarter. It was trash time, but still a pretty good play. Slim spiked a ball into the sidelines during the first quarter which was pretty good too. I don't know anything, but I'd say he'll play tomorrow vs Gladdy. Oh, South West by about 20 in the end.

Girls game was actually good to watch, with the undersized Suns (Warren sitting) taking it to the bigger Pirates. SWM up by 6 or so in the end, could have went either way.

Gladstone over Suns by a ton. Kingma and Simanic both had big games, as did the rest of the Power starting 5. Unfortuantley Bryant Jett fouled out halfway through the game, so there wasn't much in it from there and most of the Power starters sat the last quarter. Great work by the Power players getting the Suns big men in early foul trouble and cooler heads prevailing. Kingma showing he's still the most dominant big man going around and that Jett still has some work to do. Would have liked to see more from both bench's, pretty average performances, but I'm sure they're capable.

Port's 'big three' pounce (http://www.gladstoneobserver.com.au/storydisplay.cfm?storyid=3775011)

THE Yaralla Port City men's basketball team produced their best performance of their State Conference season yesterday, thumping Caboolture 121-83.

The 38-point win takes their season win-loss record to 3-5 and moves them past mid-table rivals Caboolture, who were also beaten by South West on Saturday.

Tough weekend for Coastal Suns (http://www.thedaily.com.au/news/2008/jun/09/tough-weekend-coastal-suns/)

It's a fair indication things aren’t going well for a basketball side when the star player on the other team is relaxing on the bench during the final quarter and has time to flick through the match program.

It’s even worse if your star player is sitting on the bench because he was fouled out of the game during the third quarter.

Marlins end injury jinx

FINALLY, there is light at the end of the tunnel for the Cairns Marlins.

The Marlins extended their Queensland Australian Basketball League winning streak to three with a 95-72 victory against Bundaberg on Saturday night and, perhaps more importantly, remained injury free while doing so.

Wounded warrior Matt Smith made his first appearance of the ABA season after injuring his ankle before the Marlins' first game, lasting just over 11 minutes in two stints on court.

logan ended up winning 120-107 when the bench was played the last 2 mins and darragh kept playing hard.i thought broome did well,18pts at 60% 8rebs in 30 mins, def not a shocker.
i thought a.darragh played hard and if the rest of his team ran as hard as him they would've done better.
no one could guard thalo or ammar.aucoin was solid.but logan were in a groove from about the 2nd quarter.
gonna be a bigger test for logan this weekend with the cairns/towny double.

Simon stevens quits the goannas! just had a gutful i think. formerly the goannas 2nd leading scorer until 2 weeks ahgo where he has enjoyed 5 shots in the last 2 games. sad to see one of the better shooters in our league go but apparently was just not enjoying the game. ALW I have been at all the games.

Its an absolute disaster that this goannas team is gonna miss out on the playoffs! this is a team on paper that had a chance to win it all. Some blame must go to the coach but some must also go to the point guard aswell.

The cheap shot at the team saying "IF the team played as hard as adam they would win more" is a joke. Watching jase aucoin and him argue the whole game s painful to watch and watching him dribble around missing shooters is aswell.

The team plays very selfishly, if they could share the ball they would be alot better cause they have more talent than that logan team and most of the teams they have lost too.

Very sad times at gold coast as their season is OVER! time for guys to pad their stats for the rest of the year.

I have only seen the GC boys play twice this year so here is some 'constructive' criticism based on that:

I would say that John seems to have pretty good control of the team. They seem to be running their plays pretty well and have a fair amount of discipline. This is often where most coaches have problems.

They also seem to have very talented players with a lot of skill and a pretty good bench. I was particularly impressed with Olah. Seems to have some talent and a lot of potential.

Where I think they run into problems is in their limited choice of offences. While feeding the ball into the post (Zauner mostly) works well on occasions it is obvious that when Matty gets tired they lack another option.

It also seems to me that most of their players (including Darragh and Aucoin) play better in a less structured offence and for most of the game they seem to be tied down by the offence and are obviously becoming frustrated by it.

I understand that John is a post player by trade which really shows in their game but it may be time for him to step up to the next level and have a look at where HE can make some improvements to let those horses run free.

The season is only half way through. The glass is still half full. Plenty of time to make some changes and make the finals. Especially if SW keep winning so group C gets that extra spot.

I have only seen 3 games so I can only comment on those but, I wouldnt place the blame on darragh X2, stevens or aucoin. all solid performers and put in 100%.

some of the shots that were missed were very unlucky - I would look at the defence before looking at what they do on O. Also, teams seem to suss out the GC offence quickly, so it makes it tough to throw a pass to a cutter play after play.

shame that simo has quit. he is an great shooter - his 2 jumpers on the weendend were very tough to hit. but yes he should have had more opportunities. logan played some tight D on their 2 cutters curling round the key.

I agree with alot of what you said allan.
And I apologise for sounding so negative. It is just so frustrating to me and everyone else I spoke to at the game about how the team is playing. I would definately say that the gold coast team is stronger on paper than logan in my opinion. There are positives from the game. I dont think the offence is the problem at all. they dont have any trouble scoring over 100 pts the problem is giving up 120. They dont play for each other! especially on D and it leeks over to the offensive end. Matt Zauner is a huge body who moves pretty well and rebounds, aucoin is an animal at both ends, simo is a brilliant shooter darragh a former nbl point guard and josh darragh very talented aswell. As for the glass being half full or empty, this glass is BONE dry. I dont think they have won a pool game yet! as for getting one of those 3 spots if SW finish first they cant get it cause they r dropping games left right and centre to pool rivals, havent beaten logan (and cant see them beating them) lost twice to the mountain men beaten by pirates. they still gotta play cairns rocky mackay south west again. They are done like a dinner! sorry for the negativity but you cant just say every week "its ok theres still plenty of games left" "we will come good"

Adam Darragh isn't a traditional point guard, in that he shoots first, passes second. Not a problem in my books as he can make the shot. His behaviour on the court towards officials and other players certainly hasn't endeared himself to anybody.

Have never been a fan of Szigeti as coach. Hasn't seemed to get his head around getting the right rotations, to the detriment of the team's performance. That said I don't think the team has played all that badly, it's just that they now have a target on their heads after making the final last season, so everybody lifts a gear to play them.

A shame that Simon Stevens has quit, if true. One of the best marksmen in the game. I would certainly hope that he doesn't give the game away and pops up somewhere else.

One of the nicer guys in the league too. He might pop up somewhere else but not sure because he loves the coast and the goannas, but enough is enough. You have to enjoy the game and it doesnt look like too many goannas are enjoying much of anything. He would be a great fit to many of the other teams in the south short on quality guards. Needs to go somewhere that he is appreciated and where they understand his strengths. We will see.

"Flex" can be defended from down the pub with a mobile phone. It's when GC hustle on D then run freelance from that utilising their individual talents (shitloads of it!!!) that they are most dangerous. Too much talent to be playing so structured. Leads to itchy feet frustration and so in turn poor shot selection. When the O has obviously been scouted and is countered every time Coach needs to look into his bag of tricks and adapt or just turn it over to his explosive scoring machines (Aucion, Darragh, Olah etc etc) and apply any structure to the D.
Just an observation.

I am a big fan of the flex offence and when perfected and ran well it can be very effective, melbourne tigers used it, also north brisbane in the gbl ran it for years and had alot of success with it all though they have one of the best coaches going around.

yeah he coped a 3 game suspension for "allegidly" abusing the refs last sunday after the game against the caps...
i just find it hard to believe that he gets 3 games for acting out of frustration... which by no means i condone..
but a guy like paul scott or richo gets ejected from up in townsville a couple of weeks ago and that doesnt even warrant a report to be made.
in both cases both are examples or bringin the game into disrepute or however you spell it.. but only one gets a suspension..
now im not trying to make it an us vs them scenario here just trying to point out that if your going to throw the book at someone for descent then you have to set a precedent and do it for the rest of the season..
and if this is to be the case then there could be a few players in the league sitting on the sidelines after this weekend.
the refereeing while they are giving their best effort need to step it up and show a bit more consistency i think.
but i may be wrong!!!

I thought it was a bit funny at first, but fair enough I think.

Not a great deal of 'big' performances over the weekend, and most game weren't closely contested. No doubt Anderson would've been under the pump in both games, and his consistent efforts were deservedly recognised.

the refereeing while they are giving their best effort need to step it up and show a bit more consistency i think.
but i may be wrong!!!

I think you will find it is up to the individual ref (mayeb even the game controller) to right up the charge. I would guess in Townsville they thought enough was done adn moved on but as for Kingma I am guessing it would be a diff ref and a diff thought process. All you officials out there may be able to confirm if this is the rule or not. BTW dont support/belong to either team just stating what I think may have been the case.

And in the case of Booger passion and competitiveness are traits some people in this league express in other ways (if at all), have coached him and know he hates to lose, I know he hates to play bad and hates it when his team mates are not firing on all four cylinders and as such may over express himself and in my opinion that is not a fault.

Just my thoughts on both topics.

I think you will find that the incident in Townsville would have had a report filled in and sent in. Any time anyone is DQ'd local, QABL or NBl, there has to be a report to be filled out and it is the powers to be (BQ) decide on anything from there and if it goes to a judicery.
If the offical doesn't do that they should get the arse kicked.

Also I beleive that BQ representatives have been going to matches and putting in their own reports to be looked at, away from the referee's themselves. I think this was the case in Toowoomba, and this may have been the case with Kingma.
Not sure, just the ref's are not the only people that have the authority to put in a report.

Look at league and AFL with the reports going in after the game from Match officals, it's not always the referee.

How does 1 playa get 3 weeks for abusing a ref (which is wrong yes) but if you are ejected from a game how come you dont get a suspension? Is it still I guess a prejuidce against some teams and the Special teams get a benefit of the doubt rule than the lesser known teams. Ive heard some rumors also that the refs were counting down the shot clock for the brissy team to get the shots up in time, any truth to this or what? I aint here to "bag" the refs but whats the go?

A traditional point guard makes his team better. pass first. gold coast do not have one. well if josh ran the point they would

Josh does play point, has done all year. The only time adam takes over is when josh is resting on the bench... So dont understand your point.

You would have to ask BQ what the ruling was and their decision, probably ask them as well for the charge sheet which has the penalties for each offence that occurs.

once again a load of bullsh!t from those running the league... yea refs are a vital part of the game an they dont deserve abuse but cmon 3 ppl ejected from tville v rocky and a fist fight in a womens game where the refs come in to break it up an copped some too.. wat was the result from those games absolutely FFFF all..

you hear the rubbish well there must of been a report put in about it that obviously doesn't mean a thing, either everyone gets charged or nobody does just because someone got their nose put out shouldn't be the difference in a teams season... wheres the consistency???

first offence in 14yrs of pro-ball, blatant advantage given by an official at one point of the game, along with the rest of hoopla apologies etc you have to do for these tribunals and he still gets 3 games suspension bloody incompetent imbeciles...

just my 2 cents

Who are you kidding? Adam loves the balls in his hand.

JD's minutes have been up and down like a bride's dress anyways. He's lucky if he gets a handful of chances to do anything creative.

Ok firstly, don't believe you have any idea what you are talking about!

There is no such thing as a 'special' team and noone gets special treatment. If that was the case, Bullets wouldn't be in strife!

Don't listen to rumours! If rumours are the only thing you're standing on atm then whatever you are saying is rubbish.

Actually its not a rumor it is actuality. it happened right in front of the power bench i was there and there are about 7 guys who can attest to that.

i do agree with you about the special treatment tho. no team gets it. it was just a case of over zealous and inconsistent refereeing that lead to what happened. hey unfortunate but sh#t happens right!! we live and we learn.

As for the rumour remark, that was in general. I wasn't there for that incident so I don't comment. The fact that people go, 'apparently this happened' etc annoys me because it eventually turns into fictional rubbish.

If Cox was playing she would kill Davis.... Cox in a league of her own

For Kingma to have been suspended for 3 games he must have done something out of the ordinary and obviously gone a bit too far. To argue that the Rocky players should be suspended simply because they were ejected does not hold much water since there are so many reasons why a player can be T'd up or ejected and they are certainly not all equal. By all means, if you have access to the facts please have a stab at explaining to us how the situations are the same and deserve the same punishment. But in the absence of the details, perhaps the 2 situations should just stand alone?

Davis's numbers were down against Gold Coast and she appeared to struggle, I reckon she will struggle against Townsville bigs too. Nowhere near the class of someone like Cox
