View Full Version : QABL - Week 9

what is this? cheese
11-06-08, 14:34
There aren't enough predictions on here so I thought for week 9 I would add my nickel...

Cairns v Logan

Cairns have turned the corner and with Matt Smith back (was he injured or lost?) they now have a formidable line-up. I think Logan are tough as hell though and I think are the best team in the South (I'm waiting for debate on that one) and Thalo is the most complete player in the league. (It's all about the protein) Cairns at home is almost a given though, expect Cook, Williams and Gray to lead the way. Nice job on the boards by Comino last week 2, where is Vale?

Cairns by 6

Wizards v Maroochydore

Cam Trigger is on fire and Dante has stepped up to be a gun. Great game by Davis last week, but Wizards really need some more guys to step up if they are to go all the way. Both games they have lost they have contained Dante and Cam T, expect more from Diesel and Woody. Maroochydore continues their development project, taking longer than expected. Kopittke will dominate this one and celebrate by moving to Cairns. The Clippers should get R*$%#B!S Williamson to suit up while he is back on the Coast

Wizards by 25

Toowoomba v Suns

Game of the round, make or break for the Suns. The Toowoomba Tribe are rolling, and much better for the return of Anthony Tribe. The Suns need Benny Mac or Andrews to step up and support Slim who should return to form this week and have a 'good game man'. Suns win this they keep in touch with the Caps, lose and it's all over. Gurney unstoppable at home should be too much with the support of Glove and the ageless one Grieve.

Mountain Men by 13

Gladstone v Gold Coast

Recent results suggest this one could go either way. The writing was on the wall for the Goannas last year, when a team took it to them they would crumble but the class of Zaremba and Co. proved too good. This year with a few key losses it's been a different story. Gladstone playing better of late but I will give it to the Goannas who will be fired up after all this talk and stick their tongues out and say neh neh neh neh neh as they have too much for the Power. Especially if no Kingma. Nagas rocks, sorta.

Goannas by 9

Mackay v Rocky

Poor Mackay... Zane is shooting over 50% from field and 3 and 93% from the line, is he allowed to take more than 14 shots this week! Rocky will be fired up after going 0 and 2 up north, and although Mackay would want payback for their 50 point loss unless they do something drastic same will happen again. Check out the fine art work on Rasmussen's arm as well as the Athlete's foot up there, 2 major attractions of Mackay. Am I being too harsh if I say I expected more from Weigh?

Rocky by 30

Townsville v Logan

Tough as hell to back up after being in Cairns against a team that has hit some very good form. They are doing it by going deep into their bench too, Rose is really rotating his guys. Broom would want a good performance up there to prove they made the right choice. Thalo to dominate, who will guard him? Call me crazy, I'm picking the Thunder for the upset.

Logan by 7

South West v Toowoomba

The Golden State Warriors of the QABL. Don't know how they are 8-0 with their crew but full power to them. If they were going to be 8-0 I thought it would have been the result of JC setting the world on fire, but Teys and Troy Thompson have been unstoppable. I'm gonna give Troy a trojan horse and see what happens... Toowoomba playing great ball but on the 2nd leg won't have enough legs. May still be recovering from sleeping at Mackay stadium last weekend.

South West by 10

Bundaberg v Gold Coast

Luke Cann is hot, apparently? Ok no he is. The two imports are carrying the show for the Bulls, but if the Goannas can slow them up they will get the chocolates. No Stevens is ok you can run Skepper alot more who is quality, but personally I think they should look at going Aucoin at 3 with Zauner and the Kebab-machine Drewy Waite pounding away inside. Goldy to get both and get back to 5-5 and keep their season alive.

I think you may have been smoking a bit too much of the wacky weed here. I can't see Logan beating the Heat at all let alone after playing in Cairns the night before. The Heat have gotten onto a bit of a role after heaps of travel to start of the season and i think will win this one by about 15.

Townsville will be the place to be on Saturday night with the women's game as well. A bit of gloss taken off the game by Gold Coast beating the Logan girls last week but I think the Flames will be way to strong anyway. I am picking the Flames by 20+

I disagree. I have seen Townsville women this year and i dont believe they are not as strong as previous years. I havnt seen logan though, and i hope last weeks loss has them fired up to prove they are legitimate championship contenders. Should be a close one.

Ammar aint guarding cedar! no one in the league can. The only one who could was aaron grabau and he aint playin. cedar will have his way with a tired logan team whos starters will have to play alot of mins the night b4 and travel 4 hours the day of the game! hardest trip on the calender. If logan have any shot of gettin a W this weekend it will be game 1 in cairns. Though i think matt smith and rowan grey will be too strong aswell as brebner, logans point does not have the footspeed to match it with kerry williams. scott cook will be too smooth aswell.

Game 2. Rob rose has those boys playing very smart especially at the defensive end. he will have a plan to stop thalo who is the head of the beast for logan.

Logan to lose both by double digits. Still cant believe brisbane got the win up in the ville but the Heat are a TOTALLY different machine now from all those weeks ago.

The womens game will be a bigger blowout, the flames have been waiting for a challenge and this game in particular for a long time, they have been cruising through the rounds. They will step up for this game and I dont think the logan women will know what hit them at murray stadium!

RIVALS beware - the Cairns Marlins' confidence is growing.

After a forgettable start to the 2008 Queensland Australian Basketball League season, the Marlins are starting to look ominous on the back of three successive wins.

The defending ABA champions were cursed with a wretched run of injuries at the start of the year but as their players have regained fitness, so have the Marlins regained their confidence.

THE Townsville Flames are staring down the barrel at their toughest QABL match of the season when they take on second-placed Logan Thunder at SeaFM Stadium tonight.

...

Meanwhile, the fourth-placed Townsville Heat will be looking to extend their six-game winning streak when they play fifth-placed Logan in the late game.

Meanwhile, the 4MK Good Guys Mackay Meteors will be hoping to turn the tables on Rockhampton in tonight's clash.

The last time the teams met, the Meteors were thumped by 50 points.

But Meteors coach Leonard King said his team was feeling positive and had prepared well for tonight's match.

"We had a pretty decent week of training," King said.

Key players Deba George and Zane Meehl are expected to take to the court tonight despite suffering ankle injuries last week.

However, there is still an injury cloud over Grant Kruger, Sam Bartolo and Ryan Carroll.

You could not have been on the money any more than what you were. Logan was kept in the game in the first half by Thalo but then the Heat put on what is becoming their trademark big third quarter to blow the game apart. Am a bit worried about the Heat's depth down the end of the season, the starters are playing huge minutes.

In the early game Logan were never in it. Down by about 10 at quarter time and the Flames kept building the lead through suffocating defense. Would be surprised if anybody comes within 20 of them for the rest of the year. The final score line made Logan look a little bit better than they were when Townsville ran the end of there bench for the last 5 minutes or so.

The Live Stats are pretty temperamental but I have found that a lot of times the pages are cached so if you get an old game just press Ctrl-F5 to force a reload.

Not every stadium have internet and a lot of times the SportingPulse servers can't cope with the amount of traffic they get so games just drop out.

Maybe someone should give coach/player JC a rule book - it is absolutely painful the way he continuously harrasses the refs - what the!!!!!!!!!!!
Even the South West supporters have had enough......
Play the refs like everyone else on the court - not always right (and ain't that the truth!!-) but that's the game of basketball.

Gurney absolutely drilled everything in the first half, looked like it was going to be a huge blowout. Suns to their credit kept going to Jett who displayed some serious hops and scored much of the second half points, double & triple-teamed at times. Both players did well to compete with 4 fouls from basically half time. Neers kept to the playbook and converted from the foul line mostly. Suns very shallow off the bench and did well to get within 5 at one point.

full credit to the mountaineers for their win over the Pirates,
South West struggled.
Three point shooting is great when you're on song, but man when you live by the sword, you sure can die by it as well. Took 39 threes according to live stats and hit just seven!!

Glover impressed me for Toowoomba and Gurney was solid as always. Brown had a couple of huge dunks to rock the backboard and its supports as well.

Loss could be a blessing for the Pirates in the long run and I thought Toowoomba looked pretty good. They play well together and if Brown gets really fit, they'll test anyone.

Coach looking sharp in the suit too!

Gurney has to be a sure thing for player of the week. Surely this guy is worth an NBL contract... He is better and half the guys that are signed to clubs aleady... Would be a shame to lose him to Home and Away... His talent is on the court and not on the small screen.....as good looking as the bloke is. Him and Wally Jr would make a great combination.

An unexpected win from the neers, back end of a double header when they seem to run outta legs the night before but stumbled over the line, a back up with a huge, hearty (laughter) win at the hibiscus centre (atrocious home court) to sink the pirate ship for the first time this year.

Now on a 4 game winning streak to take some momentum into some tough games comin up.

Other question? How bad are Toowoomba's women this year?

What is wromg with the hibiscus centre is the sun coming in the window down one end of the court... Day games shouldn't be allowed to play there. or at least get some curtains on the windows. Trying to play a semi-professional league and teams get sunlight shining in one end of the court... Is a bit of a joke... Is a great improvement on their previous facility but think this needs to be addressed...

Nothing wrong with Hibiscus, compared to what South West were previously playing out of.

The Hibiscus Centre would be a decent court on a saturday night game. Sunday games are awful. The sun was shining straight onto the ring and backboard. It got to the point where shooting from the right side of the court at the SW bench end was very difficult because the sun would shine on the ring and get even worse. You could hardly see the hoop and going for rebounds proved to be very interesting when trying to grab the ball with your eyes closed because of the blinding sun. They need to do something because even though it is better than runcorn it is still very poor on a sunday game
