Heard Maroochydore were playing their bench in an effort to minimise embarrassment for whoever they played. What's with the grading comp supposedly stopping blow out, no contest, games???
And what's with Coach Brown's Maroochydore U/18 girls team...did he pick them from a bloody modelling agency or something ???!!

gold coast lost by bout 15 in the end, close game tho all the way. coast down to 6 entire last quarter due to a lop sided foul count to say the least. but full credit to maroochy for keeping their heads and taking the win.

Have noticed how this Gold Coast girls team seems to "go the biff" a bit when they are down towards the end of a game. Saw them lose a game at Classics in an earlier age group that was winnable if they hadnt kept putting the other team on the line when they were making them. Always a team you need to watch out for come finals time.

the gold coast girls dont "go to the biff". they play bloody hard out dee. girls basketball is very discriminative in that 'fouls' that guys get away with are often called in girls games. but yes there are players who get caught up in the moment and make stupid fouls, and thats something the team as a whole need to work on.

The GC girls do not take it so well when beat by R"Bay do they.
Boy, they give that number 4 a work over but she still got up and played on no matter what. I think she scored the last few points for them to win by 1 point, close game.
Kate Webb was out but when she returns they will be even better. The team played really well to get the win, they were down but came back and deserved to win it. Congrats to all the team you all done a good job, It was worth the trip up to watch. When you are sitting with the opposition its amazing some of the things you hear, now, now its just a game.

Maroochydore has the Brown sisters, Annie-Rose Tanner, Lauren Lambert, Ashlee Roberts, Krista Innamee and a few others from the side that won it in U/16's. Runaway Bay will be the main dangers with Maroochydore from the south.

I agree, if Amy was in the team you would have something to worry about. Amy is an awesome player and very underrated, any team would be eager to have her play for them. This does not mean you don't have to worry about Maroochydore though they are still a good team. Top four teams to watch out for, Maroochydore, Runaway Bay, Brisbane and Sth Districts but then again you never know what could happen down the track......
Anyone have any idea who might make the team for Nationals this year?
Players have been posted on the BQ site that are still in the squad, 21 left a few pulled out I believe. Could it be they just could not cope with the training with Donna and her team, what a shame they could have gained so much knowledge from them.

mdore and rbay both played well on saturday night.... rbay were the stronger team in the end. Courtney b scoring 23 points for the mdore side.... Chloe having a very good game against mdore from rbay scoring 23.
Both coaches were out for a win but only one walked away with the smile on his face...congrats Kev..... maybe next time.
I think these two teams along with sth dist and brisbane are the ones to watch out for at Classic's.
Teams from the north to watch out for are cairns dolphins and townsville flames.

Maroochydore through to top 4.
Spartans and Brisbane through in the other pool.
Runaway Bay and Townsville have missed top 4.
Runaway Bay in play off for 7th and 8th !!
Games 1, 2, 3 & 4 Webb and Allen not present in Canberra, however without them still had 5 state squad players of the 17 and 2 QAS players playing.

Spartans are always tough to beat.
Runaway Bay have clearly underachieved and it will certainly make the state team selections interesting. Out of the final 15 girls in the squad, Spartans had 5, RB 6, MDE 3 and GC 1.

Are selections based on QAS scholarships? 8 of the 13, QAS Scholars. No Under 18 Girls Classics required next year eight places already selected!!! One understood that QAS scholarships were only awarded to outstanding athletes for an age, if warrented ie Gretel Tippett, Jillian Haughton, Courtney Browne etc
State Team
Runaway Bay [5 players] 7th
Spartans [5 players] 2nd after being beaten by a patched up Brisbane side
.....and Gretel Tippett [most deserved] makes the 9th spot [1st spot]. That leaves one player to be selected, talk about pushing the selectors into a corner !!!

There were 3 players selected from Maroochydore who won the classics. I don't think any of the key Brisbane players nominated for State and some pulled out. There were many very good players from ALL associations who pulled out or didn't bother with state for various reasons - they probably need to look at why this has happened. Previously QAS players are favoured and I am guessing those girls who were not QAS knew they were wasting their time knowing that the usual politics would happen to try and justify QAS selected players. Look at the reserves selections. There would be 20 better players out there at least.
Maroochydore girls well deserved of selection and win. The questions are why so many players from the same age group selected by the QAS, and from two associations, Runaway Bay and Spartans, neither team made the Under 16 Classics 2007 Grand Final !!
Unregistered

Purely by the fact that an athlete is in QAS does NOT assure them of a spot in the State Team. QAS athletes have been omitted from State selection over the last couple of years, bottom age and top age.
Selection in a State team involves more than being a good player....coaches look at how the team will gel together off the court as well.
...so it's a coincidence that all three [3] shadow players are QAS scholars !!!!
....which completes the selection of all the eight [8] QAS scolars !!!
...some of us....and others !! You make up your own mind, not too difficult I would have thought !!

I can't see why the fact that QAS scholarship holders consistently fill spots within Queensland state teams always comes as a suprise. The QAS kids are selected by a coach/coaches of knowledge and receive additional strength and skills training that is not generally available to other kids.
So when kids of talent and/or potential, who receive heaps of training turn out to be the better players in a particular age group, why is there so much shock?
Don't get me wrong I'm very pleased for all kids who make the state teams, particularly those who aren't members of the QAS as they are obviously both talented and self-motivated as they have to make up the ground on the QAS kids by themselves. But surely, it would be odds on that the identified QAS players would generally turn up in the better collection of players for a particular age group.

R'bay proved themselves in the rep season don't you think. M'doore made the final at Classics but remember R'bay beat them twice, once in prem and at classics.
R'bay had a lot of injuries and sickness running through the camp and 2 missing in the first few games but, thats what can happen at these things.
I think they all played exceptional considering.
All four picked in the state team deserved to be in, I think the coaches have done a pretty good job of picking the team.
Even though you are commenting about the age group but you have to admit these kids might be younger and QAS some are better players then the older girls that did not make it.
Do you honestly think Donna would take players just because they are QAS, have a think about it, ( NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.) I don't think so.
Good luck girls at Nationals I am sure you will do everyone proud.

Please, dont spoil it for the kids that made it. Some very good players missed out which is always the case when you have as much talent as there is in Queensland these days. Donna got this State team spot on. Imagine how you'd feel if you were an U/18 boys parent.

Some very dubious selctions in this side with reputations meaning more than actual performance in Townsville for some.
Can't expect state sides to peform if you don't select the players that actually perform on the court for you in competitions.

Not sure which games you were watching. I think those girls were all very good players. Check the stats and I think you will find they were all top scorers as well. I thought the players being referred to were Kate Webb who didn't play well but is believed to be injured. Jodi from Districts would have been my choice on performance. Rachel Arthur did nothing but still made shadow. I guess that's because she is QAS, no-one else would get noticed on that performance.

Sorry I misunderstood, you were saying these were the players that were non QAS. I still stand by the comments that 2 players only got selected on reputation.

I don't know where you get your information from but if you are talking about Classics just gone Kate Webb, Chloe Coughlin, Steph Newbold and Emily Allen made the state team and in the first two days at Classics they did not have Kate and Emily. Chloe and Steph had to hold this team together until they arrived on the Friday. What do you mean got found out again, I don't understand what it is your saying. I do agree though these girls did deserve to be in this team.
Here is the State Squad, as listed on the Basketball Queensland web site. I believe there are 7 Runaway Bay players named, which would suggest 5 played the whole tournamnent.
2008 UNDER 18 GIRLS STATE SQUAD

Renee Emzin
Jodie Fyfe
Krista Innamee

Did you read your post. At least quote current news and not something obviously posted on a site months ago

Hopefully BQ has now realised that it will not be a good idea to try to run 2 Under 18 Classics in one calendar year.

Kate Webb has not pulled out of State and Chloe Coughlin had to pull out due to Medical reasons. The replacement will be out of Jodie Fyth and Rachel Arthur.

I thought the coach had three reserves to choose from!

Would they choose Jess Blundell-Thronton (centre) as a replacement for Chloe? (1,2)
It will be Jodie.
Interesting that both players thinking of pulling out are from Runaway Bay.
What happened to Chloe?

Has anyone looked at how many girls dropped out of the original squad along the way and asked why?

Why did they drop out I'm interested in your observation.

Donna is pretty straight up with her players. She doesnt mess with theirs or their parents heads to gain some sort of social acceptance, fiscal gain or vocational placement. As such she's created a culture where the girls themselves are also honest in their self assessment and suitability and ability to do what's best for the Queensland team. When you have a coach that doesnt pander to pushy parents and it's known that the best player mix will be what goes away, regardless of social standing or favours done, the kids themselves (as always when you remove the parent/political factor) generally know their place in the pecking order and either drop out to concentrate on their game or other things or hang in and try their very best to improve to claim a spot. As Donna's results at National level attest, she puts together a good team and the players sort it out themselves. Stark contrast to the U/18 boys fiasco. Just an observation.

This comments a bit of the track here. When kids reach a certain age they discover theres more to life than basketball, usually once they are mobile ie driving themselves around and may lose interest in the commitment required to play and maintain that state level of playing. Which is fine because unless your name is Lauren Jackson or Penny Taylor the kids are better off getting an education. Lets face it at the moment pro ballers especially women get paid jack crap.

Donna is a terrific coach.......if you are to compete successfully at the national level, you have to be tough both mentally and physically. Donna prepares a team for this better than anyone I know, and she gets results! Good Luck at nationals girls!

Kate Webb never pulls out even when she cannot play. As seen in Toowoomba at the recent State School competition.

why do these injured players not give up their spot for a shadow and give another kid a chance. Not only could they be doing further damage trying to play on the injury but its rather selfish,

probably because their coaches dont want them to give up the spot and will use them differently but still to good effect

Players do give up their spots. I am not sure who you are refering to however Kate is an incredibly unselfish player and did give up her spot in the south coast team so another player could come in. She did still attend each day to see how the team was going and cheer them on.
