View Full Version : INJURY: Information:Management:Strategy
Statistics on junior basketball injuries should be collated annually and made available for assessment by parents, coaches, clubs and associations.
Injury statistics should be collated on an 8years to 18 years age scale and detail male and female injuries.
Questions need to be asked and answered.
What strategies can be put in place to minimise the injury risk ?
Should basketball training and games schedules and seasons be programmed based on each age groups need for recovery time ?
Are there parents in the medical profession within the clubs and associations who could lead this type of enquiry ?

According to my physio, he says it is quite common now for children who play a lot of sport especially if they play rep and state to have 'wear or even damage around the knee area'. Yes some even at the tender age of 12 and recommends strengthing the muscles around the knee to 'save it for a little longer' sad but true unless your of the island/polynesian body build where they seem to be born unbreakable.

Problem is that kids are overplayed and there is no "layoff period" except for the Xmas break. With club, School State, School Nationals, Premier League/Southern Cross, Classics, Junior Nationals and other spe^^^^^^ed programs there is always something happening. If a kid wants to reach the next level there is a lot of pressure to keep participating. This of course increase the risk of injury. There is also pressure for kids to come back after injury too early. Coaches and parents need to realise that they are still only kids and not highly paid professionals with an army of medical professionals on call. Ultimately it is the parents' call on how much sport their children play and the associated risk of injury.
Am interested if any clubs actually do keep records of injuries.
