View Full Version : QABL - Week 14
Week 14 discussion goes here.
A few items of interest this week .....
- Cairns on a triple header, with the toughest game (v Goldie) coming on the last leg
- Gladdy v Mackay, potential for an upset by the Power boys
- Brisbane v Rocky should be a blue chip affair. Both teams rolling and stacked with talent. Caps a chance to grab the W ....
- Maroochy vs Coastal err Caboolture, the rivalry hasn't been as strong this season, but the Clippers will be backing themselves to get their first win
- Northside v Brisbane in a grudge match. Haven't been following the draw/standings that closely, but I understand the winner of this one is in the box seat to host a likely semi-final rematch

Ladies tips....
Last week I went 7/11 to go 63%. Couple of upsets that threw me!
As for this week.
Caboolture v Rocky.
Rocky starting to come good and so they should with the firepower in that team. If they can actually defend for longer then 13 minutes I am going to pick them in an upset. Rocky by 4.
Toowoomba v Cairns.
How bad are Toowoomba? Are Cairns much better?
Tough one to pick but I am going to go with Cairns by 6 purely because Toowoomba cant even beat Northside
Mackay v Gladstone.
Gladstone without Stevenson are going to hope the end of the season come around quickly.
Mackay will easily put 120 on the poor girls from Gladstone.
Ipswich v Cairns
2nd game of the triple for Cairns. Ipswich are well coached and get better every week. I think that this will also be close but am picking the Ipswich girls at home for this one by 6.
Brisbane v Rocky.
Probably the game of the weekend (somehow). Brisbane too young and inexperienced - going with Rocky to get another W for the weekend
Gold Coast v Cairns
Good luck Cairns. Gold coast by 30
South West v Ipswich
South West to get the nod over a tired Ipswich outfit who played a tough one the night before. South west by 20
Maroochy v Caboolture
OK, maybe this is the real game of the weekend. Both teams aiming at the top spot in the central pool and a home quarter final. Proffit stood up last weekend and took over some of the scoring duties from Brown. I am picking Maroochy to do this one by 1o
Northside v Brisbane
Umm, sorry but who cares. Brisbane by 22.

Men tips for this week
Suns v Rockets
Rockets need both this weekend, a nice little warmup for rockys game 2 the next night. The rockets have no trouble getting up to play at home but the road has troubled them a little more. Bundy had a game with them not long ago and if they underestimate the suns they have proven they can play(possibly not beat) with the best. Rockets by 18
Toowoomba v Cairns
Cairns hitting their straps now and the honey moon period is long over for the neers. Cairns will be all business and will be way to big across the board in all positions. Gurney is very tough and glover will stroke some 3's but when it comes down to titles and playoffs its whoever controls the boards and cairns are too big. Marlins by 22
Mackay v Gladstone
The power are the hardest team in the league to predict! When you say "oh this is one the power should win" they more often than that loose, but when you write them off and say they have no chance they always seem to fire up and compete. I think mackay have shut up shop for the year and the Power boys have been in the cellar for so long they will take any win they can get! Money is on them to play with more fire in the belly and take the win.
Power by 7
Ipswich v Cairns
Warmup number 2 for the marlins. The force have a solid lineup but for some reason or the other have not been able to put it together for 48 mins. Size again will be too much and depth aswell. It will be about conserving energy for cairns for a tougher game at gold coast the next day. Marlins by 25
Brisbane v Rocky
Cracker!!! On paper the rockets are a tougher squad but heart will be what its all about here. The caps have been taking care of business but have not faced a tough oponent (contender) since the early rounds. Both teams are very well coached and it will be a 48 minute slugfest! Braden Saunders is back for the caps which is odd because he will not qualify for finals but he is the missing link at point guard, home finals must be very import to bris to bring him in with only a few rounds to go. Lets hope he is not missed when finals rolls around. In saying that he will be the difference this weekend in getting them over the line
Caps by 4
Gold Coast v Cairns
Easily the toughest game for the marlins over the weekend, with zauner and aucoin bigger bodies to be able to compete with grey smith baynes and brebner. The coast need this one to keep their slim playoff hopes alive and will have everything to play for. I think they can cause an upset on their day but the marlins are the current champs and fearne will have them ready. Marlins by 8
South West v Ipswich
Think the pirates are rattled and the playoffs cant come quick enough. In saying that this is the perfect game to get them back on track and get a solid win. Ipswich have the talent to get it done but have to play alot harder than they have this year. A loss here for the pirates pretty much cripples all the good work they have done so there is an element of pressure.
In saying that you cant put money on a team that has won 1 game this year. Pirates by 15
Maroochy v Suns
I think the maroochy boys will come out pumped in the local derby, it only takes 1 win to make their season alot better. I think they will compete for a half but the suns with too much Jett, and the other pieces are gonna be too much aswell. Dont think it will be 40 like round 1 but still a suns W. Suns by 17
Wiz v Bris
The caps will have a tough game sat night wrestling the boys from rocky and might be a little sore and sorry. But if anyone can turn them around and help them prepare for game 2 its Bruce Palmer. The wiz are an interesting one as they can be really great or realy average. Both teams are capable of winning and its gonna be who wants it. A guess is, Caps by 2
Brisbane v Rocky
Braden Saunders is back for the caps which is odd because he will not qualify for finals but he is the missing link at point guard,
That's a rough call, Mick Shaw has been solid all season .... played well enough to stat 18/6/4 a game. The back-up minutes haven't been wasted either with Cam White (limited offensively, but a pain in the ass defensively) and Drew Phillips (very good player, just hasn't had any run) both proving they can be depended upon. Not sure where Heath Gameron has been playing, but he's certainly a capable point as well.
Strange if true that Braden would be playing if he couldn't qualify. May be to the caps detriment, they are absolutely rolling at the moment, and inserting a new player at this stage may upset something?

That is crap, there is no way he should qualify, i guess brisbane getting there way as usual, why dont they grab some of the left over bullets on the same excuse, im sure they will let that slide, what a joke.

Fair go. Any team can apply for an injury excemption for a player if they aren't able to play because of an injury. What extra favours are you accusing Brisbane of getting?

Braden "Factor" saunders will not be playing in the finals according to basketball QLD!!!!!!
Brisbane have not even lodged an injury waver for him!!!! And if they do I am told it will be laughed off!!!!
so sorry if you thought he was. The rules are there for a reason! Yes anyone has the right to apply for an injury waver but if the player is not in the country for the 8 games he is supposed to play then he will not be eligible. I dont think brisbane are even goin to put the waver in because they know it will be thrown out.
Ben, was not attacking shawy at all!! u misunderstood or perhaps i didnt explain it right. shawy is one of the top 5 guards in the league. Cam white is tough too as is simon taylor. But Braden saunder is a true point guard and leader. A qtrback if you will, a guy who would make shawy olsen dusty barty and co even better if he were playing. Its not about number its about having the right fit come finals time. The only weakness in brisbanes armour against the power teams of the north is leadership at the point (not scoring cause they got plenty of that).

No sir i have not. I dont want you to get me wrong either, in the sense that you think I am bagging guys out? Am definately not. I wish I was half the shooter mic shaw was or had half the hops chris olsen does or was a qtr as good defensively as cam white. All I was trying to say was I thought braden saunders was a better leader and floor general than any of the caps guards. Does anyone disagree with that? Caps can win the title with or without saunders. It would just be easier with him I think. Cant wait for the playoffs. Good luck to all teams.

Not a pretty game up the mountain, bad refs, bad calls, and all in all, a pretty bad game. Good to see the neers women get a long awaited W!!!! Brown was once again dominated apart from a few big dunks! guards had it all over them all night, Neers outta playoff contention, shame too, good luck to the Big fish and all other teams in the finals!! Really wanna see a Rocky Townsville final, will be firey!! Lets turn up the heat!!!! What the hell happened to Ippy this year?? What a no-show? Props to SW for what they did this year for over-acheiving and showing that a team of team players can beat a team of individuals! Band-wagon!!! Really hope that there is some major upsets in the playoffs with some south teams getting up, and some unexpected North teams missing the leather! Always love an underdog! Hope that Thalo and the Thunder make a serious title run as they have been tough as hell all year and have grinded it out whatever the situation! Disapointments of the season, "the suns", what more do you have to say? "Jett", an import averaging alot, and only a handful of wins, not good enough! And that brings me to the Gold Coast, well nough said.....
Am a bit on the parra side so will shut the hell up now, just some observations!!!!!!!!!!!
Bring on the playoffs!!

Caps just beat northside and I think they will win the attle of the south and play rocky in the finals, they will have to find a way to score through rockys tough Defence.

JC only played the first quarter and sat the rest of the game as he has had to log major minutes for those boys to show some physicality but obviously put the challenge on his youngens to see how they would fair against a physical guy like stollie as they were in no danger of losing that game. My hat goes off to him for being a player coach... do not envy that role at all.

Wow what a massive weekend. How about goldy, defying the odds. Showing their potential, will be an amazing story if they sneak into the playoffs, if they do the regular season means nothing with the talent they have. I def didnt see them beating cairns, even know it was cairns 3rd game of the weekend i still didnt give them a chance, nice work fellas. Rocky are in killing mode at the moment. As for bris coming out of the south, that one could go either way. The game went down to the wire yesterday, brisbane hit everything and the wiz couldnt hit a damn thing, the wiz will finish on top of the pool now (as they only went down by 6) and will host the finals. The central pool final will be Wiz Bris at Wiz. The north will be Townsville Cairns at Townsville. The south will be pirates thunder/goannas at south west.

Just wondering how accurate some stats are. NOw I admit I have not seen Shane DAvis play in a while but I was surprised to see he dished out 10 assists on the weekend. I think in all the years I have seen him play he has not passed the ball combined 10 times. NOt a knock on Shane, more just questioning the validity of the stats, or his new philosophy to the game.
He still seems to get his shots up with regularity, so is it more the stats ?

tru and tru....no excuses from me
As someone who lives in mackay and lives at the stadium - its hard going to the games and seeing the Meteors struggle. There is talent in Mackay, Bradley Rasmussen is an extremely talented player and yeah its a shame that at times, coach king's ego is better than the entire stadium. Plus, no matter what you think - Kruger is actually a really nice guy and I wouldn't be saying things about him unless you've recently taken up boxing lessons.
But mostly, if there any talent in Mackay. Its in the Meteorettes!!!! Kelly Wilson is friggen awesome and Fiona McGrath is fierce and extremely talented. Mostly, as a squad and team I've found that they have done an amazingly awesome job and have been for like the last 5 yrs, but don't get a look in because the men matter than the woman!!!
Some of you might find that offensive but realistically speaking, truth is in some associations the women's team are better because they is too much overtalent and power of the ego within the men's teams.

head coach was ejected due to a player being fouled out then getting sum T's... they maybe strugglin on the court but Mackay has to have the best after game feeds of anybody in the comp...
i'm pretty sure its a fact that players get tired after travelling an playing 2 games so not sure if it's an excuse for losing just one of the reasons that would of helped the GC cause not sayin they didnt earn it but to back up against a fresh team after that isn't exactly ideal preparation if the shoe was on the other foot dont think you would be so smug...

Points:
1. Daniel Richards (Runaway Bay) 317pts

So who can we expect to see playing big minutes in the next couple of years?? Or who have I been missing playing minutes this year?? This is just points, doesn't make anyone the best player on the team ever but is the only stat I can put up as it's all that is taken, so if there is someone not in the points list that is doing things in the league or will be let us no about them..
So lets get talking guys..

head coach was ejected due to a player being fouled out then getting sum T's... they maybe strugglin on the court but Mackay has to have the best after game feeds of anybody in the comp...
i'm pretty sure its a fact that players get tired after travelling an playing 2 games so not sure if it's an excuse for losing just one of the reasons that would of helped the GC cause not sayin they didnt earn it but to back up against a fresh team after that isn't exactly ideal preparation if the shoe was on the other foot dont think you would be so smug...
heehee..."smug"
2006 SD led the team in assists for the season. I know because he kept reminding us for the 7 months after the season... :D
OT-
Was browsing D Leaguie stats as i havnt caught much this year and Im wondering what we have to look forward to in the next couple of years?? There is only points and fouls in d league as they dont do stats so the op 10 scores are:
Points:
1. Daniel Richards (Runaway Bay) 317pts
2. Piok Piok (Toowoomba) 311pts
3. Hayden Reed (Caboolture) 279pts
4. Shane Coupland (Ipswich) 266pts
5. Ben Houchin (Caboolture) 231pts
6. Adam Upton (Caboolture) 229pts
7. Paul Krkeljas (Brisbane) 227pts

I think this is a great point for discussion. I would like to hear others' thoughts on who they think may come good from the D League bunch.
I think a major issue is that these 'kids' simply aren't getting pushed enough in D League playing against eachother. They need to go up against a better standard of tougher mature basketball on a consistent basis, and to do this the competition needs to be opened up to all ages. Many good players have risen from the ranks of Cross Cup (Nello Giordano, Tom Ammar and Heath Gameron just to name a few) and I think they consistently solid level of competition they were up against each week contributed greatly to their improvement.
And just my opinion, I think Piok is the best of the bunch you have mentioned. He has produced decent results at QABL level already, and I like his confidence. To be honest though, there are no stars. Any kid that isn't a contributor at QABL level already won't get there from D League.

Did some more research on each of the 'kids' in the top 10 points..
D League Points:
1. Daniel Richards (Runaway Bay) 317pts
2. Piok Piok (Toowoomba) 311pts
3. Hayden Reed (Caboolture) 279pts
4. Shane Coupland (Ipswich) 266pts
5. Ben Houchin (Caboolture) 231pts
6. Adam Upton (Caboolture) 229pts
7. Paul Krkeljas (Brisbane) 227pts
8. Barry Taylor (Logan) 226pts
9. Ty Davidson (Gold Coast) 221pts
10. Ben Harris (Gold Coast) 208pts
ABA Points:
1. Daniel Richards (Runaway Bay) N/A
2. Piok Piok (Toowoomba) 60pts @ 4.0ppg, HS 18 V Ipswich
3. Hayden Reed (Caboolture) 74pts @ 4.6ppg, HS 22 @ Townsville
4. Shane Coupland (Ipswich) 39pts @ 2.8ppg, HS 9 @ South West
5. Ben Houchin (Caboolture) 10pts @ 1.4ppg, HS 8 @ Bundaberg
6. Adam Upton (Caboolture) 16pts @ 1.8ppg, HS 4 V Mackay
7. Paul Krkeljas (Brisbane) N/A
8. Barry Taylor (Logan) N/A
9. Ty Davidson (Gold Coast) 2 pts @ 2.0 ppg, HS 2 V Caboolture
10. Ben Harris (Gold Coast) N/A
From those stats (Dont mean anything) it looks like Piok, Hayden, and Shane have either taken there opportunity in scrap time, made some easy fast break lay ups, or made some great plays...Which ever one, averaging 4 points isn't enough at this age...
When I have more time I might break it down a bit more...stats don't say everything..It really depends on wether or not stats were gained during scrap time, or wether it was on the starting 5 and in a good 20 minutes for the D League guys..Persoanlly from the little bit I've seen I think it's just confidence that limits most of the D League kids..In saying this though I think that maybe basketball isn't in great hands at the moment?? Queensland wise anyway..And I mean depth wise..There are the Brendan Tyes, Nathan Crombie, Rhys Martin is a bit older but still very young, These guys are realy going to keep the competition strong but depth might lack eventually!!
Go ahead and comment please..

GBL is a great way for guys to develope, Heath Gameron and Tommy Ammar are great products from the North Brisbane GBL team having played there with them, its a very srtong competition with alot of aba players in it and playing that every week especially over the aba off season. it maybe to far for T'BA boys though. I believe Southern Districts and runaway bay put there D League team in there and are both on the bottom of the ladder so it shows GBL is tougher then D League.

D League is designed for talented young players who might not yet have the physical size to match the AbA boys at this stage, dont forget Matt Massy played D League last year, then went to College in the USA, seems to be going ok in the ABA now, Drew Phillips scores 47points in D League on Sat hardly plays ABA, watch out next year, Chris Smith hardly gets any time in ABA, plays D league, now at University in Hawaii for 4years, D league cant be to harmful to the future of basketball

Dleague is simply the next step for U18s. Thats why U18 BQJBC was moved back to October start, cause Associations were concerned they wouldnt be able to field a team if both comps ran at the same time.
with only 2 weeks left in this years QABL regular season and with a couple of crutial games left as teams battle for top spot and home court advantage in their respective pools. I think now is as good a time as any to open up the forum for discussion on which teams this season you think have over achieved, under achieved, which teams are overrated and which teams are going to finish right about where you think they should....

Is there any chance that Rocky are not going to win Championship now that they have secured a home semi and final in rocky??
Unregistered
22-07-08, 17:06
Its a weird scenario for finals. If south west and nthside and cairns advance from their respective pools that will mean cairns have the worst record of the 3 (assuming they drop the last round game in rocky) as the other 2 teams have the split on the marlins. Which would set up a rocky vs cairns semi then a pirates wizards semi, and the winner of wiz pirates would face a very tired rocky or cairns the next day. So its not a given!
If Brisbane or logan/ goldy advance then rocky will face one of them on the sat night in the semi and will most likely SMOKE them on their home floor. Then cairns(assuming they take care of the heat) will have the other one on the sat in rocky and the final will be epic on the sun in rocky.
Would love to see a rocky v cairns final cause of the history. But there are alot of possible scenarios. Sorry heat fans this is not a diss, the heat have had a solid season taking care of all the teams they are supposed to beat but have gone missing in the finals for the last 3 or so seasons, and I cant see them doing much different this year, think rob has them playing well but they r very young and aaron fearns is very experienced and my money is on cairns to come out of that pool wherever the game is played(townsville, as i think rocky will get the marlins in the final round).
Finals will be huge and this is the first time in a while its pretty open to a few teams to win if the ball bounces their way. Rocky are the strong favs but there are a few darkhorse teams that if things fall their way could go all the way (Marlins, Heat, Caps, Wiz,) Lesser bracket (Pirates, Thunder, Goldy) Everyone has a shot!

Come of the grass mate.....Obviously not a lack of talented youngsters getting around the League. Just off the top of my head guys that can go and are around 25 or younger: Nate Niesler (SW) Brendan Teys (SW), Dave Gurney and Steve Glover( Toowoomba) Crombie, Massey, Smith, Philips, Taylor (Caps) Cedars (Townsville) Vale, Williams, Brebner (Cairns) Fitzy, Zane and Deba (Mackay) Rhys and Steve Weigh (Rocky) Trigger (Northside) Brent Andrews (Coastal) - Those are without even trying that hard to think about it. I am sure there are more I have forgotten but like I said there isn't any lack of young and talented guys.

Hayden reed is probably the best junior coming thru coastal, as stated above he hit a career high 22 vs tville, it wasn't chump points, he was one reason coastal stayed close to the heat, he had chris cedar guarding him and at times made chris look silly with his speed and athletic ability, mate don't put these guys down cause they aint scoring in the ABA, one reason they dont is because they dont back themselves because ppl like you say they arent doing well enough and it gets to them. Nice to see 3 coastal boys in the top scorers of D league. Keep it up boys.

Dusty is definately a proven import. He consistently scores around twenty a game and gets on the glass heavy. I expect his stats from his Adelaide days to be what he'll average this season with the Hawks. He would not have had a single play ran for him with the Bullets. Also, he is a good guy and is what the Hawks need after Angelo Reyes and James Peters.
I'm from the North and those players listed in the top scorers for the D League give me the impression that the league is quite weak...

Dusty was brought in to play a role on a team that was very good already. He fits in to bruce palmers system well and now makes the caps a genuine contender. Hes a guy that will get 20 and 10 without raising a sweat. If the caps wanted to get him 40 a game they could but they have a good spread of scorers and capable guards. If you are comparing his numbers to that of imports from caboolture or bundy then you are a fool because if you want to put him on these squads and let him get all the numbers cause noone else can he would. He plays a role on a contender and a team that will finish 13 and 5 where other imports r on teams that have won 2 games (Bundy- Both against maroochy) and 5 games (4 of the wins are against bundy and maroochy).

I was excpecting a big game against rocky, they are a tough team and thought they may have got him the rock, shaw and taylor had tough games, not comparing him to anybody just excpecting better shooting % and numbers, In saying that I have not seen him play for caps so was interested.

Fair call. Tough coming into a team that is already set in its ways and have been having success without a post player (barty is more of a slasher). Dusty is only now getting back into basketball after a few months off. I think you will continue to see his numbers go up and his production more as they head into the finals and need him more. Rocky have a team that can hurt you from 1 to 5, and all of them hurt brisbane! guards and bigs

Over achieved - probably Toowoomba and south west, townsville beat some teams I did no think they would.
Under achieched - gold coast and Mackay
Overrated - ?
Best post game food - Cairns is great, mackay.
worst post game food - Logan (fresh subway would have been nice) Gladstone have to do something other then pizza.
MVP- Trigger.........Daylight........Jett
Most improved - Simon Taylor
Best Defensive - Ryan McDade
110% - Thalo green
Nicest guy - Cam T
Closest team - Gladstone. I hear those guys hang out all the time and get along really well. Mountineers a pretty close.
Roid head - Adam Eathorne from south west the guy is on the gear for sure.
Tech foul - Stolberg.
Sticky Fingers - Zane Meehl.
Player coach - JC and his boys did well but Blair smith dropped 42.
Best Home Crowd - Rocky. they give it to you start to finish awesome stuff.
Worst crowd - Caboolture could hear the crickets outside. pretty poor considering they had Jett
Best court - Brisbane. Micky T and suchy doing a good job there.
worst court - Ipswich. grand stand sucks. Caloundra hoops are tight.

Yeah fair call there, they're almost unbackable to win everything again this year.
Here's a few things we've learnt this season...
Player coaching can work... Jason Cameron, Blair Smith
Mackay need to employ a coach who is in it for the team not looking to upgrade his own status
The North are again dominant but the southern teams are more competitive than most years.
Rocky can seriously recruit...
Northside's budget was well spent...
Jay Andersen is an NBL-quality import... Almost!
As is Bryan Jett... Almost!
Jason Aucoin, Brendan Teys, David Gurney, Nathan Niesler and possibly a few others must nearly be worthy of an NBL contract...
I would like to see a cash prize for the biggest crowds in accordance with town size to increase crowds. Rocky, Mackay and Cairns do well but apart from that it's ordinary.
Unregistered
24-07-08, 22:41
Gladstone get a pretty good crowd, only 5 years in the comp it will grow as they start winning more games, They have sponsor boxes now as well. for a town of 30,000 its not bad.
still nothing on the rocky crowd, its unreal down there.
Bryan Jett and Jay Anderson are poles apart - neither would be legitimate NBL players unless the teams they played in were loaded with Aussie talent.
Out of the two, Jay Anderson hands down is the better player.
Can we come up with the all Defensive team ??

All this bagging of coach King has to stop. The guy's team has fallen apart and he is still giving it his all and probably works harder than any coach in the league. Mackay needs him.
Look at the roster and tell me that is an easy team to coach. The criticism should be directed at the players.

My twenty cents on King is that he is every bit to blame for the mess in Mackay. He recurited the team. Unfortuantely J. Fitzgerald got hurt as did Col Oriard and King almost drove Jenkins to play AFL again then he recruits / signs Deba George, Zane Meehl, Grant Kruger and David Fletcher. Fletcher is ordinary at best, George, doesn't want to play structured ball, Kruger wants a title but can't hold his temper and Meehl is looking for a contract which he aint gonna get. Should never have signed Meelh and kept running and gunning with Fitzy, Jenkins, Rasmussen and Oriard as well as Ryan Carroll, Patteson and Duck off the wood.

Bundy claimed the honours in the inaugural 'two homeless dudes fighting for a dropped pie' clash, holding on to knock off the Ippy boys 105-103. Bulls up by as much as 17 in the third, but forgot to play ball when they reliased they could actually win the game. To Ippy's credit they took it down to the wire, with the game going down to the final second. Anderson simply unstoppable, Luke Cann hitting some big shots down the stretch. Stolly a one-man band, with Jeffries handy.
A leaking roof forced this one to the spare court, cmon ippy bball, lift your game, court is simply a joke.
Shout out to the Bundy coach, braving the ippy cold in tommy raudonikis 1970's grey sweats, all class.

well well well... been a long year watching and come up with a few end of season awards...
MVP- give this to Trigger. can flat out play the kid. has a pretty game to watch... if only had a face to match would be the complete package. If Russell "lips of an angel" Hinder can make it to the last cut of boomers than Cam should be up there.
Most Improved- Give it to Gurney. Boy tore some arses apart this year and carried the mountain men in his backpack. If he's not the best player going around in the country without an NBL contract then the clippers will win the title. If only the kid could ride a wake board.
Most overrated- Mackay whole team. Championship favourites as touted in some books coming into the season. Turned out garbage. Had injuries but had every right to finish with a better record... would struggle to beat an egg...
The "Mick Catlin" award for ugliest player goes to Kingma... Damn this bloke didn't even have to put on a suit to play his role in star wars. Doesn't stand out as much as he should due to the bad heads on the rest of the team. They must all be effected from the power station cause surely they couldn't all be that ugly
Best shooter- Guerkis.... ha ha gammin. He poo. prolly cedar. the Michael variety.
Best defender- no real standout... lets go for Bruce Brown for his top effort to shut Trig down to 67
Best ink- Simo if u count playing half a season... otherwise rasmussen
Worst ink- Aucoin hands down... lets see who has "no regrets" about writing that stupid shit on his leg forever.
Worst Court- Ippy. Everything there is crap.
Best Crowd- Rocky...dont throw up an airball or you'll cop it all night.
Worst crowd- All 3 people that watch wiz. U got the best player in league at least get some one there to watch him.
I Love Mum award- Zane meehl.... gets no numbers all year except for against the Dore. thanks mum your the best.
Biggest whingers- Gladstone"we only have 30 000 people in our town" one would think they could find at least 10 decent ballers.
Arny award- still goes to Oriard. Actually just flexed his fore arm and that snapped his wrist
Sexiest man- Trig would give himself this but has to go to Gurney...How edlse do u get Home and Away contract.
Shaq Award- Has to go to kopitke after seeing the previous post... thats just shit adam.
Best coach - Palmer, the caps are the dark horse
Worst coach- Michael "hammer"Wellings... Shane Heal eat your heart out
Biggest pie eater- Lloyd Lewis by big space... Then Kyle Kiernan... Big dads favourite sons.
Biggesst shoulders- Jett... Carried all the other things on that team... whatever there name is. They would be chump city without him
Tip to win- Rocky to beat caps in final by 5.

So if my calculations are correct, the only way SW can get top spot is if Rocky loose by 200 points or more against Cairns next week :D
I will just pencil that one in shall I....
Rocky host finals because even if they lose to Cairns, they have the tie break over SWM when they beat them earlier in the year.
On the subject of tie breaks, Gold coast just snuck into playoffs, only logan beating bris and goldie losing next week will get logan back in the post season.
Edit: But if Goldie and logan lose, and the neers beat maroochy, the mountain men are in.

there are two tie breakers in line for this weekend logan play brisbane coast play south west and toowoomba play maroochdore toowoomba should win and if both coast and logan both lose it will be
logan 3-1 toowoomba 2-2 and coast 1-3 on the 3 way count back
if coast and logan both win coast get the split by +2pts over logan
simple for coast win they are in!!!!!
lose and logans in !!!!!!! or prey for maroochydore to pull of one huge upset

Any tiebreaks between groups is not decided on games as one team would have the advantage of the home court when they played so inter-group tiebreaks are decided on overall percentage.
Likewise, multi-team tiebreaks are not decided on games between the teams but on percentages between the teams.

WOW!!!!!
Goldy's destiny is in their hands! I think its def up to them!
Heres my thoughts on what will go down this weekend.
Brissy will crush logan by 20+ Logan have shut up shop and are done and dusted for 2008, what seemed to be a given for them to make the playoffs 3 weeks ago has turned into a disaster!!!! With broom abandoning them team it has really hurt them, he said he will come back for playoffs but im sorry big fella there will be no need for that!!!
The neers will crush maroochy this weekend making their record 10 and 8. I think they have a much better shot than logan cause they hold the split on goldy. They just have to take care of business and hope like hell for goldy to lose.
The pirates v goannas game is interesting cause sw have absolutely NOTHING to play for and goldy have EVERYTHING to play for, so we will see how fired up the pirates are. The only positive for the pirates to play for is that the neers would be a much easier game in the qtr final than goldy(who have hit their straps at the business end of the season) This could really be a final for sw if they want to eliminate goldy and have an easier path to the final 4 in rocky.
In sayin all that I think goldy will get the win on their home floor and book a date at the hibiscus centre the following week with pirates(and beat them for that matter, but thats another story) The south pool the most hotly contested by far with the other finals contenders already getting their respective spots.

my bad pay no attention to that. Logan still have a chance on the 3 way tie. my bad ppls. still think they will just be making up numbers in the playoffs if they fall over the line. Goldy theirs for the taking

Classification of teams at end of regular season- As per FIBA By-Laws “If there are two teams in the classification with equal points, the result(s) of the game(s) between the two teams involved will be used to determine the placings”.
So, that would mean Rocky v SWM game would be used to break the tie.
3 teams tied at end of regular season- ACROSS POOLS
"If more than two teams are equal in the placing, a second classification will be
established, taking into account only the results of the games between the teams
that are tied".
3 teams tied at end of regular season- WITHIN SAME POOL
"If more than two teams are equal in the placing, a second classification will be
established, taking into account only the results of the games between the teams
that are tied".
So only the games between the tied teams are used to break a tie. If it can't be broken by using those games, then overall pts% would be used.
The stuff in italics is from QABL info emails issued by BQ.

Neers are done. Best they can do is 3 way tie, and they are at the wrong end of the for and against there...

Whoever thinks Toowoomba are still in calculations for the final spot in the South Pool in the men is not thinking straight. They are now 9 and 8 and will beat Maroochydore putting them to 10-8. Now if Logan and Gold Coast both Lose, then they would also finish 10-8, and going on the count back of games won and lost between the three teams it sits like this:
Gold Coast - Lost to Toowoomba twice, beat Logan Once and lost to Logan Once (1 win 3 losses)
Logan - Beat Toowoomba Twice, Beat Gold Coast Once and Lost to Gold Coast Once (3 wins 1 Loss)
Toowoomba - Beat Gold Coast Twice, Lost to Logan twice ( 2 wins 2 Losses)
So on the tied record of 10-8 scenario, Logan would go through.
If either Gold Coast or Logan win next week, Toowoomba would be one win behind them and obviously out of contention once again.
So Toowoomba is already gone even if they win and both logan and goldie have losses.
As for the Gold Coast, and Logan scenario's:
If both win, Goldie goes through by virtue of the split.
If either team has a win and the other has a loss, they are through.
Already shown what happens if all three are 10-8, and if they are both 10-8 and by some crazy miracle Maroochy beats Toowoomba, then same deal applies as per them both winniong, Goldie is through with the split on Logan.
Goldie through with a win as has been said, Logan praying the Pirates give it to Goldie as they did to them on Saturday, and if they lose against Brisbane that Maroochydore does not beat Toowoomba.
I'd say there would be some keen people checking livestats or the result uploads on Saturday night.
However the battle iin the women in that pool is just as interesting, with the Pirates needing to win down the Gold Coast to take the last spot in that pool. But atleast the Pirates are still an outside shot of taking top spot in that Pool (wait for it). Let's say Logan has a loss to Brisbane (hold the cough and laugh for the next stat), then the Pirates would only need to knock off Goldie .... by 94 to take top in the pool in the three way count back scenario.
Gotta love the end of a season with all the what if's .......

was at logan v south west on the weekend.
can anyone explain the Thunder's rotation? Ammer, Gureckis and Todd Meyerling (sp?) didn't get much court time.

That pretty much explains Logans whole season!!
Thunder fans must be waiting to see what master coach Orlick pulls out for the WNBL debut..

With Spartans getting booted out of the SEABL finals in the first round and Vern now moving back to the states there could be an opening for Orlick if Logan comes to their senses sooner rather than later.
What clown chose Players of the Week for Round 15?????
Cherie Smith was somehow annointed winner with 18 & 7 as the Flames thrashed the pants off the Clippers. Not exactly a performance worthy of accolades.
More deserving players who missed out ....
- Katrina Bloomfield (Cairns) 27 & 4 in an upset of Maroochy
- Rhona Price (Neers) 41 & 20 in a 30-point victory over Bundy
- Bec Haynes (Logan) 23 & 7 in a W over South West
How Rhonda Price missed out baffles me as much as how Smith got it.
As for the men, Stolberg got it after going 41 & 22 in a loss to the Bulls. Perhaps Jay Andersen feels as duped as Rhona Price. In a three-game weekend he went 38 & 17.
What a joke!

Firstly it wasnt Drew Philips that scored 47pts it was Paule Krkeljas, and he didnt play at all in the ABA game either. I Quite clearly remember these two players as i went to watch them in the ABA games, but to my disgust neither one of them played any minutes. I saw old beat up veterans who could hardly run around the court play for almost the entire game, but the youngsters werent given a chance. I think it is disgusting the way politics runs Queensland Basketball, seems to me its more of who you know rather than what you know here in Queensland. Thats my two cents.
Wow, way to bring up a 3 year old post.
What's going on with Drew Phillips at the moment? He was lauded as a signing for Mt Gambier (along with Chris Smith) but I don't think he's played a game.

He is going to college somewhere in Utah Div 1 I think?
He didn't play SEABL because he then would not have been eligible for college.
