The Singapore Slingers are now out of NBL. Not sure where NBL is at with it. Apparently they were not happy with restructure that is planned by Basketball Ausytralia for 2010 so pulled out a year early.
very sad, 3 teams out so far. I think the NBL need to look at what the AFL is doing and mirror them cause they are far more successful.

Not just AFL, look at the 'new look' ANZ netball competition. Each televised game was packed to the rafters, standing room only. AFL, NRL, Netball are all very popular sports. Basketball needs to be promoted starting from home associations and from what I have observed on the ground floor of two very prominent associations this is not happening. Business and financial management is key and when a very strong association ends up flat broke and running on sheer will and determination by a small group of very dedicated members trying to salvage what the outgoing committee did to their dear association then basketball in qld is doomed.

well for the league to be creditable they need to step in to blaze and tell them to get rid of joyces as that is a joke to watch. quality players aren't playing this year and he has a roster spot that could be fulled better. darren ng is one asset that comes mind plays defence and scores more than 5 pts consistantly

the game is run in pockets and won't succeed until there is a wider collective vision.the present powerbrokers need some dynamic leadership.
Basketball is never going to be as popular as these sports, as they are already well established to the Australian market. This doesn't mean; however, that basketball be in the state it is at the moment. We should still be able to be relatively succesful.

"PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd and his wife Therese Rein are the new patron saints of hoops in Australia.
Basketball Australia chief executive Scott Derwin said yesterday that Mr Rudd would be the patron of the Boomers and the new elite men's basketball competition that will replace the NBL next year. Ms Rein would be patron of the Opals and women's hoops."
IS there hope yet for our sport??? Or is another political smoke and mirrors trick.

Mark Peters the head honcho was originally from Brissy and his kids played ball for Brisbane. All went to St. Peters I think and Jordan his son played for Qld South at nationals in U16 in Tasmania and was in the QAS before moving to the ACT.
But that will mot guarantee you a thing if you have packs of useless people making decisions based on covering and saving their own asses................BA and the NBL............

All true. And I wouldnt think for a minute that Peters and the Commission would prop up or call in favours for a lame duck that cant measure up. I can only assume that the problem areas have been identified and a rescue package put in place to retain the tremendous grass roots support the sport has while the new broom does it's work. It's about participation and pathways in the Government's design, not lifetime jobs for disconnected paper shufflers. Nice of K-Rudd to lend his support, and a Suncoast boy at that. Does that mean a new stadium for the Sunshine Coast?

Think you will find there is a new 4 court stadium either being built or about to be on the Sunny Coast at present.

The good news is that there will be a NBL team in Brisbane next season. Foxtel will withdraw sponsorship if they do not have one. The bad news is that it will be owned and operated by Baskeball Australia and managed by BQ (most likely) on their behalf. It will be just like Perth Glory in soccer, Players contracted to Ba. The team will stink and be a very low budget concern with BA expecting everyone to get behaind a team of players recruited for television coverage only. Seems that BA are only talking to BQ in this State so private money will not be attracted to the sport. Maybe time to look at other options BA. Bq is not an answer, they can not even manage State League nor keep up a positive junior program.

NBL STATEMENT ON CAIRNS TAIPANS
The National Basketball League (NBL) released the following statement from interim Chief Executive Officer Scott Derwin in response to the announcement by the Cairns Taipans that the club had been placed into voluntary administration.
“I received a call from Cairns Taipans majority owner, John O’Brien late last night informing us that he had placed the club into voluntary administration,” said Derwin.
“The decision to hand the club over to administrators has come as a shock to the League as it had received no previous indication from the Taipans that the club was experiencing extreme financial difficulties.
“There was also no prior indication from the club that it intended to take this course of action when the recent issues surrounding the Sydney Spirit were being addressed, which is disappointing.”
“The League understands that John O’Brien is acting in a responsible and ethical manner by appointing an administrator, choosing not to run the risk of trading while insolvent,” said Mr Derwin. “We are confident the appropriate administrator has been appointed to make sound business decisions regarding the financial viability of the club.
“I will be meeting with the administrator today to determine the extent of the club’s financial situation and to explore all possible options for the Taipans to continue to play in the NBL. However, it is the administrators, which will ultimately decide the future of the club.
“We remain hopeful that a way can be found for the club to play out the rest of the season.”
Derwin stated that the recent issues surrounding the financial viability of some NBL clubs highlighted why basketball in Australia was undergoing significant reform. “Basketball now has a unified national governing body to run the sport with a revised management structure focused on delivering strong commercial and community benefits for the sport.
“The need for greater accountability and commercial viability will see the introduction of a more stringent criteria for the ‘New NBL’, in terms of ownership guidelines and financial guarantees, when it is launched next season.”

While the sport may be in chaos for some it still is a great sport.
Time for the people at the top to start listening to what people at the grass roots want. Not saying anything or everything is wrong but sometimes it is how it is perceived. Lets face it the NBL once regrouped will look something like this.
Perth, Adeladide, Victoria, Melbourne Tigers, NZ, Sydney, Townsville with perhaps Gold Coast and/or Wooloongong making up the numbers. With Cairns in a bad way no smart business person is goping to put money into a revamped Bullets. Given that the Foxtel deal must have a Brisbane based team in it I am thinking that the NBL Board will have to administer the team which will not do justice to the aspiration of the fans who want to win. Sydney may also be in that position so our sport is in trouble.
Obviously the sport is about to do a back flip and change seasons again and this will then impact on the State League teams making them more reliant on imports as they can no longer access aussies who will no longer be available due to cross over of seasons. Maybe a good thing maybe not.
The scrapping of the ACC also will have an affect in time and no matter what administrators tell you it will not be back. Central, Big V and SEABL have no interest in the concept. SEABL whether you love or hate it is now poised to step up as the alternate competition (Second teir) for the majority of basketballers in Australia. With Dandenong and Sandringham joining the SEABL they now have the 8 of the largest basketball powers in Australia. It makes sense for those clubs that will depart the NBL to jump into this competition also and they will.
That will allow the sport to establish a more equal playing field for the smaller and better structured programs within State boundaries. This will be good.
So while not all seems well at the moment the moving and replacing just may be what our sport needs to get back focused on developing local players through junior ranks.

Listening to the radio the other day with both Andrew GAZE and Carl BRUTON (Senior) been interviewed. BRUTON should be invited onto the panel that is reviewing the game nationally as he had some very sound ideas of what is needed. Unfortunately the panel that has been set up to try and establish the new NBL don't understand the complexed market that we are trying to compete in. We can't use the AFL, NRL, etc as an excuse for why our sport hasn't maintained the appeal over the years.
One of the key changes need to be made is to liven the game up. I don't bother watching the NBL anymore as it has become stale and boring to watch. It lacks characters who excite the crowd like Ken COLE and the likes did in the early days. Also, as Bruton suggest, the players and teams have become isolated from the fans. In the early days of the NBL players would go out to schools and shopping centres and promote themselves to the community.
I was in S.A. during this time and the 36'ers use to come out and play game in the community during the off season. They would play games against local association all stars and they were great fundraising ventures for associations. Further, they would bring with them promotional packages and free tickets to game's.
Having lived in Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville for the past ten years with my children I have been so disappointed with the way these clubs promote themselves. High profile players would be listed to do autographs at the end of games but would never turn up. Especially the imports who seem to feel it is below them.
My son chased Abneys autograph for months and every time he was listed to come out, he never did. In the end my son's opinion of him changed and this is typical of the way the modern players are.
all in all we've inherited a game that is now on its last legs and unless attitudes change the NBL will not survive another year.
Further, look at all the teams that have folded this year and look at what they've been paying players. I predict that the Southern Dragons will fold very soon as the Head Coach has not changed his ways in an endeavour to win championships.

agree with all of that ,forward marketing and getting back to community is the answer not to many givers in our top players or imports , gaze spent hrs with kids and the reputation he has speaks for itself.
