How bout some chat about the ladies.
Firstly this weekend.
Townsville with the Weekend off here are my tips.
Mackay v Cairns
Hilarious to think that Cairns are there in the first place. Mackay first team through to Semi's
Mackay by 40 points
Maroochy v Caboolture
Maroochy inconsistent in recent weeks in the weakest pool in the comp. But, in saying that I really dont think that Caboolture have got the firepower nor the d to stop the Browne sisters.
Maroochy by 18.
Logan v South West
Logan have got the W here in there last two outings and fairly comfortably (27 and 15). Can South West bring the goods to this game? Not too sure of that but I think that it will be closer then the last couple of games. Logan by 8.

MVP's for the ladies.
MVP League
Kelly Wilson - Mackay
Carried this team all year with not a lot of back up.
MVP U23
Amiee Browne Maroochy
Runner up would have to be Jacquie Zalenka Mackay (great year)
All Star 5
Flannagan
Wilson
Parsons
Abbott
Davis
Coach of the Year
Suppose you would have to give it Mark Wrobel because of the 3255 winning game record but I am not going to instead I am going to give it to someone who has had to actually coach during the year. Love to see if Mark could coach a team that wasnt full of WNBL talent
With this in mind, I am going to give it to Scott Mackenzie of Mackay for only dropping 5 games during the year with limited talent.

Mark had coached plenty of teams without WNBL talent. Won a Gold Medal at Nationals with Under 20's. Also a Silver and a Bronze i think. I think credit need to be given to him because this team has improved this year. If he couldnt coach they wouldnt have been winning by the margins they have or playing as a team as well as they do. Sounds like somebody has to coach a team with poor talent to be considered for an award hey?

Thalo for MVP? Get off the hooch!!
Hasn't Simon Taylor started at least half the season? And is Cedar too old for youth player? Give it to his brother.
Brisbane has applied for an exemption of Braden, much to the amusement of other teams. Hope they get it, he has been playing like dog turd.

Just interested to know what guys think about intra-league match-ups.
I live down around the SEABL competition but have played in QABL and Waratah.
Interested to see what sort of a line-up each ABA league could produce.
Obviously there may be some biased thoughts but I reckon it'd be interesting...
No imports from any leagues unless they also play NBL. Injured players also qualify

Bit rough on Jenkins considering he played only four or five games...
QABL finals time something i'm yet to experience an being in the POD means going to make it just that little bit tougher... anyway my first female bookie Charity May from Illinois is a little bitchy that we didnt make the semi's and she thinks the playoffs format and the Pool set ups sux dogs balls and def gives some teams an advantage an sticks rods up others and as ignorant as they are i got agree with the hot little seppo
POD (pool of Death)
is next year the year someone from another pool finishes the on top of the Ladder or will the big budgets of the north continue to shine well we all know the Flames will win again... both teams in this game have had Head job seasons (up an down with a pretty good finish) this is a toughie tho cos i think Cairns has a chop to beat Rocky wher the heat dont but i think Heat have a good crack at Cairns in TVille stil going with pretty Fish tho $100 on Cairns in a close one...
Cairns 2:1 Heat 3:1
POE (pool of ease)
Bundy, Clips an Suns if NS an Caps didnt make the finals this year with the the programs they have and money they spent they should of retired although in saying that its not there fault QABL and geography gives them a helping hand and one these teams will be in the GF vs Rocky/Cairns... will Boondall get a crowd im thinkin there will be more caps than Wiz supporters an this will get the Caps over the line with Taylor throwin down a massive Dunk on the 9ft hoop at the visitors end.. $100 on Caps
Caps 2:1 Wiz 3:1
POB (pool of b!tching)
Refs must cringe when the get rostered on a POB game, JC, Stollie, Thalo Bruce an the whole GC thats a hell of alot of whinging, moaning an arguing... GC would prob be better adversaries for SW but im sure thalo will elbow Teys or JC to try even it up... Logan actually look like a bball team an they def have a team that can get SW with ther inside presence if used effectively and with all the Logan thrashing the boys are sure to come out firing... we all know SW live an die by the perimeter so guards D are the key to this game if you can stop SW shooting well they have little else to go on but gota feelin that they will be on Fire for this one... $100 on SW
Sw 2:1 Logan 3:1
after an unfortunate webcam incident Charity May is a little embarrassed walking around Addieville so she needs a little extra cash to relocate to another town where she plans to start an internet business that we are all sure to enjoy.. so good luck to all teams and dig deep for this worthy cause an have a chop at who's going to Rocky next weekend...

What a season. Each quarter final could go any way and the semis will be no different.
I thought I'd give my report card on each team following the completion of the regular season ...
Brisbane
Were a mess early in the season, largely attributed to injury, which saw them drop a home date against the Suns. Brought in Dusty Rychart to finish the season off and qualify for the finals, giving them low-post scorer they desperately needed. Mick Shaw and Simon Taylor have been the rocks for this side, who have enjoyed healthy contributions from differing players each week. Players like Beak, Olsen, Barty, Gameron and Massey can put it down on any night. Not sure pushing Braden Saunders through to qualify on injury exemption is the right thing to do when the last thing Brisbane needs is another guard.
Overall - B
Bundaberg
Weren't as bad as everybody thought they would be, but really needed that second import to seriously challenge for any Ws. Thought V-Dogg did ok with the personnel he had on board. No names like Stroh and Wallis started to come along, and Luke Cann was very impressive in a leadership role. Jay Anderson a great buy. If Bundy can keep their nucleus, get another player or two and V-Dogg can continue developing what little junior talent there is, I can see these guys improving next year.
Overall - C
Caboolture
Started out the first few games looking ok-ish, but proved to be a two-trick pony with Slim and Brent Andrews burdened heavily with the offensive workload. Heard Slim loves the place and could be back next season. Certainly hope that happens because they need him big time. The up and coming kids are ok, but at this stage would get eaten alive by everybody else if they were throw starters minutes. Need one or two more reliable players next season, although not sure where they'd pull them from.
Overall - C-
Cairns
Not as tough as last year, but still formidable. Scott Cook played off the hook, check out his numbers, they are amazing for a point guard who runs the team. Felt that this side never hit their straps with continual changes through the season, and not sure if they will be at the best this weekend with the coaching staff still trying to work out how to share minutes amongst the frontline.
Overall - B
Gladstone
Thought they might have improved on last year, but didn't offer much. Wasn't a big fan of the Simanic buy, I think they would've been better off chasing someone else. Have heard talk that the Wookie's time is up after a few off-court issues, which might not be that bad. For what they're paying him, I reckon they can go get somebody else who will provide more energy and enthusism on the court. Dale Iwanicki is a keeper.
Overall - C-
Gold Coast
Well those two dropped matches to the Neers proved to be killers. Find it sad that Simon Stevens had enough and pulled the pin halfway through, he is one of the nicest blokes in the L and has consistently been one of the best long-range marksmen. I hope he doesn't give the game away. Getting Zauner to come on board was great, seems he was much better than when he played with the Coast a few years back, would love to see him give a full season a crack. Aucoin was great and Tilby came in late to provide some handy numbers. What happened to Josh Darragh ... injury?
Overall - B
Ipswich
Not much to say that hasn't already been said. The team simply didn't work together. I feel sorry for a proven winner like Stolberg who toiled and played strongly around such a mess which saw perennial underperformer Lloyd Lewis get the boot. I should mention that Tim Smith played well, and Ryan Jeffries had another decent eason. Back to the drawing board for next year, good luck Wello!
Overall - D
Logan
Not as hot as what people predicted. As much as he is a good bloke, I echo the sentiments of others in saying that Dick Orlick just ain't cut out to coach this team. Rarely got the best out of his players, and substitutions at key periods in a few games were questionable.
Overall - B-
Mackay
Season went down the gurgler when Fitz and Oriard went down with injuries. Their prospects at making the playoffs did look reasonable until that point. Let's see what they do next season. Time to go Krugs, you're over the hill!
Overall - C
Maroochydore
Everyone knew they were going to do it tough, and they did. Almost got that elusive win against the Neers, but fell in the final quarter. I won't name names, but I hear they might already have a restricted player ready to go for next season. They need some help, which would help lighten the load of Duncan and Hedges, allowing them to produce more efficiently.
Overall - D
Northside
Signing Tragardh was a boon, and they produced their best season to date. Dante Sykes, the L's biggest enigma, was unstoppable some games and ruined them in others. Shane Davis played his role perfectly to be a solid contributor. Got found wanting against a few teams due to lack of guard depth. Adam Koptike 6/33 free throws what the hell is that.
Overall - B
Rockhampton
Not surprisingly the strongest team in the comp. Have the best top 6 player combination in the league.
Overall - A-
South West Metro
Big big surprise packets of the comp, deserving of every accolade they receive. These blokes all enjoyed playing with each other and it really showed on the court.
Overall - A
Toowoomba
I thought the mountain boys did alright. If they got slightly more out of the Glove and Reimann then they would have made the playoffs. Import Bruce Brown was out of shape, much to the detriment of the team. Absolutely foul prone. After two years of duds, perhaps third time lucky next year. Gurney is the man, I hope he stays on next season, although I can see somebody like Rocky grabbing him.
Overall - B-
Townsville
Thought Rob Rose (COTY in my opinion) coached this team very well. Chris Cedar played above expectations and brother Mike Cedar was awesome. Andy Goodwin didn't have as good a season a previously, but spot contributions from other members made up for this.
Overall - B+

Nice numbers posted by Steve Weigh in the Cats first pre-season match against the Crocs.
Loughton also stood tall. They're a tough line-up. Expecially with the league's best forward, Shawn Redhage. Rosell Ellis and JR were good for the Crocs who missed Homicide.
PERTH 100 (Loughton 25, Hinson 16, Weigh 15)
CROCS 91 (Rillie 20, 8reb, 7ast, Robertson 18, M. Cedar 15, Ellis 12, 7reb, 7ast)
All this is well and good but sorry, Melbourne will win it easily, possibly undefeated

jason accoin would of seen more ball in the last couple of minutes against sth west if jd was on

Semi-finals can be like faith healers – come game time the lame can not only walk again but step lively, and the infirm are fairly chomping at the bit to get into the action.
And so with this in mind, the Maroochydore Clippers will do well to beware of their once badly wounded local rivals – the Coastal Suns - in the women’s QABL knock-out semi tonight at Maroochydore.
When the Suns lined up against the Clippers three weeks ago they had just five fit top liners to throw into the action and they were duly dispatched 83-72.
That was the second loss in what finished up a four-game losing streak to end the season – not the sort of finals preparation coach Paul Saltmarsh was looking for. But the cavalry started riding over the hill last week when talented forward Bree Warren had her first game back from a knee injury.
Her presence on court was not enough to arrest the losing momentum against Ipswich last week, but now sister guards Kristy Williams and Sharni Green, are stepping back up for their first outings since July 18.
Williams has recovered from an ankle injury and Green is back from a bout of glandular fever. Unfortunately forward/guard Isoa-Jade Cook, who has been out since early July with a knee injury, will not be making a “miracle” return.
If you can be lucky when an opposition players falls on you, creating a grade three ligament tear, then Warren had it in spades. What should have been a season-ending injury requiring a knee reconstruction, saw the damage limited to just two months of solid rehab.
“I fell in such a way there was no cartilage damage – I was so close to requiring surgery,” she said.
Warren said the knee survived its first hit-out quite well, though her fitness was down and her courts skills understandably rusty.
“I really feel like playing this week and I’ve had some training runs – last week I just had to go in without a run,” she said.
Warren said having Williams and Green back this week would lift the side which is looking to put in four quarters of defensive and offensive effort.
“We have been having these little lapses, but hopefully we’ll take it up to Maroochydore,” she said.
Saltmarsh said his side should not need any motivation given that this is a semi against their Coast rivals.
“It’s now backs against the wall,” he said.
as john had to go to matt skepper who flat out sux i stead of jd
Skepper is no JD, but I thought he held his own when giving big minutes. Scored double digits in most games after the halfway mark and didn't really turn the ball over.

brissie 106- northside 103
looking at live stats shows dusty hit a 3 with 5 seconds to go to give brissie the win, the play before that Trigger hit a 3 to tie the game, Good to see the bigs stepping out beyond the arc. Trigger with 51points
townsville got the job done in what looks to have been a tough shooting night for everyone except Mick Cedar, he had 42points.
logan women lost as well.

Can someone tell me if there is a worse stadium than the Runcorn High School for watching basketball? I've just come from there and I gotta tell ya that those stands are a joke. Everyone is so squashed in... I just reckon it's rude taking 8 bucks off us and not providing adequate seating for a big match. If you can't host a final properly you shouldn't have that right just because you are the comp leader. QABL should really look at this because there a lot of new fans coming to these games...I can tell you now that there will be 6 less if Runcorn is the venue for another final next year. By the way Congratulations to the Pirates players who deserved their win tonight.
Wizards pounded Caps in the first half, then the Caps came back slowly but surely in the second half. Led for the latter part of the game but Trigger hit a triple with three seconds left to even the game up. Dusty hit the game-winning three on the buzzer.

um... yes you should. that's why you play all season long. cant help scheduling conflicts. besides its not that bad of a venue. yeah its a little crammed but it adds to the atmosphere. you know like the old days when crowds used to squash in like sardines to CBA games in a lot smaller places.

THANKS SOUTH WEST METRO FOR A GREAT EVENING!
Logan Men played one of the best games of the season tonight, well done Richard and team. Thailo was on fire as always with his 3s and passion, and Chris was keeping pace with him. Great way to bow out guys.
That combo SW has going is magical and they deserve huge accolades for a fantastic season and final tonight. Good luck with the next round.
The venue was not 1st class, but we all enjoyed a game superbly played by both teams. CONGRATULATIONS SOUTH WEST PIRATES.

its funny you say its so bad.. Mark Dalton told people at South West he wished he had a venue like Runcorn to play at.
the pirates other stands were at hibiscus, which wasn't available for the game. I thought the atmosphere was great at Runcorn and the stands weren't that bad. It was a great game, Logan kept fighting, Gureckis put on a shooting clinic and both teams busted their tails. Thalo's dunk was nasty!

haha gold that u think south west will beat the heat on a neutral floor in rocky.
Lady pirates have a better shot at mackay but kelly wilson will be tough to handle.

And Rockets v Heat in the mens (rocky to win the comp by 16)

Good luck to all sides competing this weekend. I can't see Townsville losing even though the Rocky crowd may get behind the Southern teams. Too much class with Michael Cedar being able to get his shots off at will and Chris Cedar penetrating to the cup. If Goodwin gets a solid 16 and 10 the Heat win.
I think we'll see A Rockhampton, Townsville final with Rockhampton getting over the line.
Martin v C. Cedar - Martin probably JUST holds the edge with a little bit more experience.
Thompson v McCully - I think this is the Heat's problem position. Ben is alot bigger than McCully.
Weigh v M. Cedar - Neither player will defend one another so it'll be a free for all.
McDade v Rees - Think Rees will be a little over whelmed and McDade may have his way.
Sarunas v Goodwin - Interesting match-up, both players are important to their team. Goody especially
Rockhampton 110
Townsville 90

Matchups
Martin v C Cedar- Martin with a BIG edge here. Rhys gettin his shot in the 10 for nbl is better at both ends of the floor and will give chris problems.
Thompson v Mccully- Thompson with a size and smarts advantage. He has given skully quite a few touchups in the past. skully is a tough defender but ben will have his way with him
Weigh v M cedar- Think mic has the edge here, with mic bein far too quick for stevie but i think rockys help d will come quickly and help him out. at the other end weigh is far too big for mic to handle aswell so it will be pretty even but with mic the slight advantage.
Mcdade v rees- ryan will throw rees around like a little boy, no contest here this matchup hurts the heat bad
Dumblidauscus v goodwin- goody a smart vet who will get some sneaky buckets, goodys age may be a problem with salaus very active on the o boards. I disagree that dumblidauscus is a very important player for rocky, hes a role player and will be sacrificed at the offensive end to concentrate on d and slow goody.
At the end of the day rocky will concentrate on shutting down cedar(mic) and will send plenty of help to stop him and tville wont have enough or good enough spare parts to beat them.

I agree totally, i dont think either of the mens semi games are gimmees. I reckon a fair market for the weekend would be;
South West v Townsville
South West $2.05
Townsville $1.80
Rockhampton v Brisbane
Rockhampton $1.65
Brisbane $2.20
On the Womens side
Townsville v Caboolture
Townsville $1.01
Caboolture $20.00

Mackay $1.95

Rocky v caps in the first home finals series rocky has had in years!!! The faithful will be out in force! If rocky lose there will be a riot in the streets! Dont bank on an upset. The problem the rocky team has had this year is motivation in some games. They will be sooo fired up infront of their home fans. Brisbane are goin up for a night on the piss(which will be fun).
Rocky 1.01
Caps 20.00
Lock it in eddy!!!!
Pirates caught the heat napping early in the season. Think this one will be a blowout too with the heat far too well coached and drilled. The heat have been a different animal the 2nd half of the year. If you are contending for a title and wanna be takin seriously in the finals you dont lose to the neers and gladstone.
Heat 1.50
Pirates 4.00

well its a sell out and I cant see the refs not being effected by the crowd, rocky will be in the final. They all follow Benny T lead and he is normally cool and calm so evryone is relaxed but not this time, He will wont to retire with a bang and he will have a HUGE weekend.
I think Stevie Weigh is a great defender with long arms and a wide stance and then Glen scott coming off the bench, I dont think anyone but Trigger has scored over 20 points in rocky this year but if anyone can do it its Cedar but rockys help D is tough.
Rocky hoops are tough to shoot on so south west will need to be on fire.
I think the grand final is Rocky vs Brissie, who wins this game will win the Final. Depth is in the favor of brisbane if they make the final.
I do think these are the 4 best teams in the comp and well deserve there spots.
I cant wait

Stephen Weigh may be a solid defender in college ball where team defense's are overall, quite good but here, where one on one play is highly suited, he will not even remain on the same court as Michael Cedar. Cedar is explosive when he decides to drive to the bucket. Although this won't effect the result, it might mean it goes close..

Just like in rd4 at Rocky when Stevie restricted Mick to 3 of 15 when he was on ! Mick got the other few baskets at end of game when Rocky run the bench in the blowout.

Mick and Stevie were starting team mates for QLD National U/20 champs in 2005 and both National standouts in their positions and roles. One has had 3 years of AIS and College ball the other 3 years of NBL development and ABA experience. Different positions but very similar skill sets and talent. Both guys future NBL All Stars and will feature strongly in their respective teams even though they wont match up. Exciting game (provided thats the way the dice rolls) and a class contest between two very good teams.

I am sure Brisbane and SWM will love the fact that the 2 superpowers are planning their Sunday GF right now! Correct me if I missed something here, but didn't both Brisbane and SW beat Townsville in their only meeting this season? Brisbane beat them early on in the year in Townsville too, they are a MUCH better side than when that game was played. I think that was their first win of the year after opening losses to also rans the Wizards and Caloundra.
Also when was the last time Rocky won a championship;199something? Rocky always spend the most money, thats a given, but they never win it all. If they do get up finally, it will be the most exspensive piece of jewellery ever in Qld state league history!!
I tend to agree with someone else who said that the Rocky /Brisbane clash is the real Grand Final. I have the utmost respect for SW and what they have accomplished this season, the same for Townsville. However, for mine the 2 best sides are meeting in the other Semi.
Good luck to all involved..should be a dynamite weekend. Will be a huge night for two teams on the Saturday night..that will be very ugly!!
counting chickens has a point... to make the final you only have to win one game and SW live an die by the 3 and when they are on fire its hard to beat them cos all 5 guys on the court are ready to shoot from anywhere... in sayin that Cedar an Goodie are used to the big arenas an the crowd will be pumping not sure who the majority of crowd will be going for but it will be a good game to watch... im putting my 2 cents on tville to get this one....
then the big one have to agree with chicken on this one too this will the HUGEMONGUS game reminiscent of a GF both teams loaded with talent and an atmosphere that would explode if someone lit a match inside the stadium... as much as everyone goes on about no-one scoring over 20 in Rocky Caps have broader range of scorers then most teams not relying on 1 particular person to get it done but to be honest this is Tweedy Richo TC Paul Scott and Benny T's last chance to get a state title maybe even Rocky's last chance a fact that wont be lost on an already over passionate crowd so Caps are going to have to beat a few hundred maniacal fans some very pressured Refs and a team that has had its own way at home all year good luck to em i say cos they are going to have to play out of their skin to get it... 2 cents on Rocky
both games will be awesome to watch and whoever makes the final def deserves it, im putting my last two cents of the season on Rocky to take it all out at home and at least 3 ppl to get arrested for drunk and disorderly over the weekend...
good luck to all four teams..

pirates and heat is tough to pick because sw don't match up well but sw have beaten townville and if they contain goody a

Your matchup reviews are quite amusing lol not a whole lot of thought put into them or possibly you havent been to too many games. Especially recent games!!!!
Mcdade v Dusty- Totally disagree with you and believe dusty def has the advantage here, mcdade is a hard worker but dusty wrote the book on hard work. Very active and def has the edge
Saulaus v Barty- Barty is also a hard worker but as far as tearing anyone a new arse i dont think so, this is battle of the role players here, very even matchup, neither guy will look to assert himself on the game but they will both be solid.
Weigh v Beak- Hilarious that u give the ad to beak, very tough competitor in beak but weigh is another class, beaks quicks(which arent lightening like u imply) will be matched by weighs length. And weigh is a superior shooter to beak aswell.
Benny T v Olsen- Stick a fork in this matchup its done!!!! olsen might have a few highlights but thompson with a far superior brain at both ends.
Martin v shaw- Top point guard vs a spot up shooter. Martins length will both shaw too and wont see half as many open looks, shaw doent have the jets to get by martin either at at the other end will struggle to keep ryhs out of the lane.
You should try and catch a few more games next year b4 you post your matchups. Good to support your team though. If brissy get the win it will be done across the board and with palmers coaching, cause they dont have the edge in many of those individual matchups.

Townie's big three of the Cedar Bros and Goody all with 20+ to get the Heat over the line by 25 points against SWM. Looking at the stats, JC was stone cold as were a few other teammates.

Why would JC play himself 47 minutes? Next closest was Nate Niesler with 39 minutes. No one on this website can Honestly say JC is the best player on that Pirate team. He is a liability on D and when he can't buy a 3 ball he might as well be playin vets(where he should be anyway) on a sunday arvo.
If you were the coach of the team surely you could see past your ego......when someone isn't hitting and not doin much else there is only one place for them..... that's not on the court in a Semi Final. Deja vu....Shane Heal and the Dragons playing himself to much to the detriment of the team.....nothin like strokin your own ego!! Well done JC.....coach of the year my arse

As for the little clown whos baggin out JC, you are an absolute fool!!!!
I am not a pirates fan or player but to say the loss was his fault is ludacris!!!
He is by FAR the best player on that team, and the best defender. You have made no valid points in your post. The pirates lived and died by the 3 ball all year and were very sucessful so dont hate on their gameplan. They were never gonna win that game against tville and they definately overachieved this year so props to them. Jc has to play that many mins, he is the brains at both ends of the floor. You take him out of that team and they are the same sloppy squad that finished 1 and 17 two years ago. I cant believe ppl like you can be so stupid and ungrateful. You wanna point fingers at chokers have a look at the teenage sensation who went 3 for 17 when the season was on the line. show some respect for veterans like JC who sacrifices his game every week so these young kids can develop and shoot all the shots. Liability on D hahaha your off your head!!! hes the best defender in the league hands down. Like i said im not a pirates fan just a hater of idiots!!!!! Him or rob rose should be coach of the year cause they have both overachieved massively with the teams they have had. Everyone wrote them off and they delivered. Get a clue MORON
SWM would have lost by more if Jason Cameron did not play - he is a like a traffic cop driecting traffic defensivley and came up with some great D plays yesterday - the SWM offence let the team down a bit. I have said it once I will say it again of you want to bag somebody grow a spine and put your name to it.
Final today should be a cracker - www.stage.net.au and follow the link to Rockets webcast if you wish to watch the game.

Was this per game or for each day?
I have no problems with it if thats what it was. I muxst admit that is amazing and a true testament to the popularity of Bsketball in Rocky.

Thoughts on how the Rockets will go this weekend at Nats??
I think the Rockets will match other teams in positions 1 through 3. How they fare will depend heavily on the performance of frontcourt rotation of Saulas, McDade and Paul Scott. There will be a bunch of quality bigs at Nationals and the Rockets will need to negate their output to have a shot. Just my opinion, best of luck Rocky.
That said the Rockets have a favourable first-round opponent in Sutherland (BJ Carter, Brendan Clowry, Rod Proctor) and should belt them by 20+.

Mate coming on here to rebutt some kids smart ass comments isn't going to do you or anybody else any good. You do a half assed job at anything and you can expect somebody to point out your dodgy work. Do it in sport and you'll cop shit from all sides. Its a given.
If you honestly tried hard and did what you could this year then I guess 15 and 10 is ok. If you didn't then maybe you should put your hand up and say "Yeah that was me. I'm responsible". No excuses, you just didn't do what you knew you had to. Develop some mental toughness. Only then will you be a success at anything, not just basketball.

Team by Team
Townsville
An 18 an 0 season which took the Townsville girls to a 40 something winning streak over two years. At the time of writing this they are a very good chance of going back to back with National ABA championships. A new coach at the helm with Mark Wrobel running the ship and they did not seem to miss a beat. A team that goes around 10 deep and there second five would probably beat most teams starting team. A great effort and fingers crossed they go back to back again.
South West
A bit of a surprise packet in 2008 going all the way to the gold medal game, unfortunately for them though they had to play Townsville and well best of luck to them. However, deserved of being there at the end and the injuries and loss of Erin Brady at crunch time really hurt them at the money time of the season. Coach Jason Chainey got some good additions to the team this year in young Ash Wallis, rebounding machine Ezria parsons and point guard Erin Brady. Knocked off some more fancied teams enroute to the big dance by ending the seasons of Logan, Gold Coast and Mackay. Good year, well done.
Mackay
Not a bad effort with the cattle that they had. Knew coach Scott Mackenzie was able to talk Kelly Wilson into playing for them and was able to build everything around her. It was very much the kelly Wilson show and it showed in the final that when she cant score they do not win. However, Jacquie Zalenka was a bit of a relevation for the team and with a year under his belt I think they will only get stronger next year.
Caboolture
Well, what can I say.... Salty did pretty well here. Fairly good mix of youth and experience but unfortunately they lacked the services of a big. Not too sure if they will be able to keep them all together next year as half of them are from Brisbane but only time will tell. Knocked off maroochy in the Quarters to go up and play Townsville in the finals. Dropped some games late in the season yet overall did a good job.
Maroochy
I must admit that a small part of me likes it when Maroochy fall out early. Browne sisters were exceptional this year with Amy putting up some very big numbers. They were backed up well by the couple of bigs but fell at the last hurdle to semi finalists Caboolture.
Logan
Too cocky to get the job done for the year. Had the services of 3 WNBL players and cruised through the early part of the season before falling over to Townsville by a fair wack of points. They ended up topping the tough south pool but got beaten by 12 by South West at Logan in the Quarters. Relied heavily on Michaels, Davis and Haynes and once again it showed in the quarters that if you can shut one or two of them down they dont have much behind them
Gold Coast
Not too sure how a team with Abbott, Stubbs, McConnel, Thompson cant make the finals. 2 losses to South West during the year holted there march forward. The help of a quality guard would have helped them but they just didnt seem to utilise the use of there big's enough.
Will do the rest of the teams tomorrow night.

The Bundaberg Bulls could secure the signature of NBL star Cameron Tragardh pending negotiations with a naming rights sponsor.
Bundaberg basketball is in talks with the potential sponsor, who cannot be named until negotiations are final, about financial backing in 2009 and are hopeful about confirming a deal this week.
The Bull's financial status next year will also decide the future of former coach Michael Van Dongen, who was offered a two-year contract with an option of a third year.
Tragardh, who plays for the Wollongong Hawks, said he would make the call on a Bulls' move at the end of the year.
"I'll definitely keep him (Van Dongen) and the Bulls in mind when I make the call," Tragardh said.
"I usually make my decision around Christmas time.
"I like what I saw in Bundaberg when I came up to play, there were loyal fans and it looked like a really good community with a lot of potential."
Van Dongen said he would be inclined to reject his two-year contract, as Bulls coach and junior director of coaching, if sponsorship talks fell through.
He also said if he was not at the helm of the Bulls, Tragardh would likely sign with another Queensland Australian Basketball League (QABL) team.
"He was going to play for me last year in Brisbane for the Capitals, but I went to Bundy and Bruce Palmer took over," Van Dongen said.
"Cameron didn't want to play for Bruce so he didn't sign up, he wants to play for me." The 2.09 metre forward, who led the QABL in scoring this season for the Northside Wizards, indicated that he would not sign with the Bulls if Van Dongen was not the coach.

Rockhampton Basketball has worked long and hard over a period of time to come up with a Championship at both State and National level.
You don't buy championships as many of you will no doubt talk about - you recruit the right people in the right positions to place you in a position to win.
It's happy days in Rock Vegas let me tell you - free piss for the boys at one of our many sponsors establishments tomorrow.
To those that bagged the team - well the rings are on their way to the Beef Capital.
We hope that we have done QLD proud with the result along with the Townsville girls winning (they are a talented bunch).

My mail is that Richo, Ben T, and Paul Scott are retiring. Maybe more. Will be interesting to see if Stevie Weigh backs up next year seeing as Perth usually keep their NBL guys in WA. I think if he has a decent year (which looks fairly likely) he could probably do what he wants. Either way, Rockets will have a far different look next year.

apart from weight no local got any court time. even when rhys had a shocker in the final tweedy had to keep him on there.
so what are they going to do when the locals retire? they just going to bring in someone else of course. same fomula as every year.

this league is about winning not about playing locals so I am with you there. But development is pretty important and rocky have had plenty of good players they could have developed and had a competative all local team.

yeah but then you could say those locals have gained a lot of experience and valuable quality training against quality guys they brought in. You ask Steve Weigh and i'm sure he'd say he valued so much from going against thalo, mcshane, josh dickons, vlad boer, peter bullock, rhys martin, ben thompson, charles brown, ant lyons, cam tragargh, mcdade, salius, who wouldn't as a junior want to compete against those guys year in year out to see just how far off they are from making it, or measure their standard. It'd be an honour I say.
All rocky did was go out raise sponsorship and brought them in. Yes, they might be fortunate enough to have a bigger base to get sponsors from but instead of complaining about it year in, year out. give it a go. ask for anything. a free car. a house to sleep in. $100/week it all adds up and then you too might be able to help your juniors. In the end, next year will be a year for those locals to show their talent but in saying that, rocky will still be competitive, they just won't be going all local and handing it over to some kids.. Mitch Philp is years off being a solid point guard cause of his string bean body, glazey isn't strong enough to man the 4, and craigy is a big man in a 2 body, we've always known that. Glenny will enjoy the extra shooting next year, TC will stay around i'm sure, he loves it too much but benny T, richo & paully will retire and what a service they've done to Rockhampton. You couldn't be prouder of those guys. Paully kept hurting his knee(touch wood :)) and come back bigger and better every time. richo in 2002 they said retire cause he had ankle probelms but his prescence in the locker room is worth the roster spot any day of the week. any team would love to learn from richo. I'm sure gladstone loves having blair smith around. what an honour it is for them. they'll get better because of it too. anyway i've had my speil for today. Instead of being a hater, be a lover.. enjoy the good things in life, stop worrying about the negative shit and go work on your game this pre-season and bring it next year in the QABL.
You can have more then you've got.. because you can become more then you are.. :)

I hardly think that because we have the national champ that makes us a better comp. Bundy, maroochy ipswich to name a few bring down our comps standard. there are no teams like that down south.
To be fair, Maroochy mens made the semis last year and this year with the departure of some of last year's players (Fitzy and Meehl to name two) and their well credentialled coach they had a "rebuilding year".
First of all I want to congratulate both Townsville and Rocky on a great achievement. They have worked hard to get to where they are. I know the Rocky boys still will be going hard.
I think the small minded people who have used the great wins to have a go at SEABL though have belittled just what those two great clubs have achieved and trust that it is only the few and rather the greater number. The next year will be very starnge for us all with the ABA now finished with the likes of the NBL about to restructure and SEABL electing not to be part of the Australian Club Championships as they are to be known from here on in with any team allowed to attend. I imagine that the process of playing in what is effectivelly the current State Leagues will still be the method of working out whether you are capable and should attend but this is now most liklley to become a fundraiser rather then the crowing victory. Sure it will be great to win the ACC in the future but the process is getting there very different. I hope I am wrong. With SEABL now electing to consider that when they play the East vesus North as the pinacle for them (I think it will go this way) then the ACC will step back in standard is a concern. Again it is great that QABL teams won but lets face it if they are only challenged from within then they would not have had to work as hard as they have to achieve what they have.
I see the debate about new year already raising its ugly head but I ask everyone this. Do you want to iwn then if you do you must be willing to have a plan and have the strength and determination to carry through that plan. Rockys team wasn't created over night. How many years have they been so close and seen it slip away through injurys etc. Every club and every player will have a different set of goals and objectives and they will do what is best fro themselves. Districts chose to leave SEABL to better the pathway for the juniors which they have done. Most do not agree with what they have done but local sponsors and members through attending games suggest that they have done what is best for them. I have to go now but if people are serious about discssing the future love to have a chat. Perhaps Ben could set up a page so we can move off what shoulkd be pages of celebration rather then attacks and snipes.

Huge Congratulations to the Rockets! more so to TC, Pauly, Tweedyand Benny T, well done boys what a way to go out! but my mention is for Richo, an absolute legend of the QABl in my opinion and close to the best to have played in our comp.waited 20 years for this title and was an allstar callibre player for a fair majority of them and the heart of Rocky. yes Rocky can afford to buy players, all teams do, it's the class of the locals in this team that make the difference and led by Richo.
just puttin it out there but should Rocky retire #8 jersey?

You say the title coast alot of money???? shows what you know by that statement. Rocky is the only aba club hell the only club in AUS that make a profit each year, thats right the aba program is a business!!! NBL clubs lose money each year, the crocs used to make a small profit but even they lose money now (not much). Rocky go out and get their team so that their fans have a quality product to watch each night, get a good team play exciting basketball and the crowds stay. Well done rockets, there will always be haters and ppl goin well done but this.....and that.... great job way to bring it home for the QABL
yeah ur rite mate there is no chance any1 else in the country is making a profit other than Rocky are you still drunk from mad monday?
but rocky is the bench mark when it comes to sponsorship dollars an buying players etc cos like Mackay being in the unique position of major town in the region with not much competition for sponsorship dollars..
in saying that it will be interestin to see if coach king is there for another year and who they are going to buy for next season..
i have mail that says Clips will be handing the spoon over to someone else with the return of a hometown hero and bundy aren't sure if they are in comp and if they are if Vdog will return to the helm...
long time till the season starts but i guess we gota talk about something on here :)
You can't buy premierships, they are earned. You can however equip yourself with the tools to best complete the task. Even then it doesn't always finish the way you would like it to.
I am sure there are other clubs that do it bigger than us here in Rocky - I would suggest the Geelong Supercats would be at the top of the tree.
It is a business to us - the more people we can put on a seat to watch a game of basketball on a fortnightly basis improves our chances of having kids wanting to play the game.
Unlike the majority of other places we don't use money from juniors or seniors to bank roll our ABA program for men or women - the program pays for itself and hopefully will also assist us in improving our existing facilities in the very near future which benefits the entire organisation.
Where to from here - great question. No point asking any of the players right now though - they are all still celebrating and it would be difficult to get answers out of them in any case. As the first National Championship winning team of any description to come from Rockhampton I would say they might take it easy come....Sunday maybe.
There will be no Darren Richardson, there will be no number 8 full stop from here on in - his singlet will be retired on Saturday night. There will be no more Ben Thompson, they both have retired with the wins they have desired for a long time. The rest is in the lap of the Gods - we will be doing everything in our power to place us in the best position to defend the title at both state and national level.
The great thing about the competition is that the restricted and unrestricted status of players will affect alot of teams next season probably no more than us - so we know we will do it tough - but will be giving it a red hot go in the process.
The players and coaching staff won the titles this year but special tributes must go to Con Kyreakou (former president) and Steve Richards (former ABA Chairperson) as they built the program to a point where it was very easy to work from. As a long time supporter and now worker i undestand and recognise the work that goes in behind the scenes to make this all happen - or at least place you in a position to have it happen.
By the way - to those that have an issue with Queensland assuming the best winter basketball compeititon in Australia - geez get a life. It's not that big a deal at the end of the day - it's more about being proud of the fact that Queensland have been well represented over the last two years in bringing home the trophies and rings. It is great for Queensland basketball at a time when the basketball in general needs a shot in the arm.

The Ladies Competition in review.. Continued part 2
Cairns
Struggled a lot when Cox was not there (3/4's of the year) but did claim the scalp of a couple of teams that should've belted them (i.e Maroochy). However, probably not a real true reflection of team that should have been in the finals.
Rockhampton
I think if there was an award for a bigger underperforming team in the league this year it would have easily gone to Rocky. This team really did have some good players, with Jones a decent import and big, Neves returning from D1 in the states, the other guard from the states plus the late addition of Lewis should have had teams shaking in there boots. A team that could points on the board but unfortunately couldnt stop other teams from putting more then them on the board.
MVP shared between Jones and Lewis.... long hard look at the coach on this one as he just couldnt get them on the same page.
Ipswich
Typical Ipswich year playing typical ipswich basketball. Small, scramble and scrap hard. Dont ever give up and have a typical Trish sort of work ethic. I think they will be tough next year once they pick up one or two decent bigs.
Brisbane
Not real sure how a team like brisbane can be so bad and lose so many good players over so many years. I really dont think there is a reason they cant be as good as Townsville. Emma Hammo shown the door half way through the season with Kent giving it a shot but unfortunately better off staying in juniors. A lot of work to do here otherwise they will have an under 18 team representing them in the future. Need some leadership badly! Really should have done better as they had some decent players in Korst (hardly played mind you) Rachel Warren etc.
Gladstone
Great pick up with Stephenson and they pushed some teams all year by just showing some heat. I rate the fact that they are trying to work on there womens program and are slowly showing the hard work that they put in is starting to pay off.
Bundaberg
Good pick up with the guard, freeburn who will easily win the MVP for the team this year. They picked up a win here and there but unfortunately struggled for the entiriity of the seasonl. Pre season dramas with coaches, plus injuries did not help them during the year.
Toowoomba
Ugly, Ugly, Ugly is probably the nicest way to put this season. You had Tape return for another season and show some loyalty but apart from her and Price they really had nothing. Probably a good thing to happen to this team is that Bubach has hung up her coaching board and is giving it to someone else to see what they can do. Did a good job of killing this team off over the past couple of years losing some decent talent over this time.
Like I said, Tape and Price toiled hard but yeah!
Northside
Looked better then they did last year with a little bit more structure around them and there a couple of young kids who stood up and tried there best. Unfortunately for them though, they really did struggle during the year and only came away with the solitary win. However, in saying this I think they did get better over the course of the year. Be interesting to see if Alice continues to coach or they have the merry go round of coaches that they have had for the past 5ish years. Not too sure why they played zone D all year and didnt learn, plus Melissa Jan best looking girl in the comp!
I think that is it, for all teams.
MVP Kelly Wilson (Mackay)
Coach of the Year Mark Wrobel (townsville Flames)

On the BQ website there is the photo of the Rocky Rockets but what about putting a photo of the Townsville Flames as well...had to search the Australian website to find it..so come on Q'ld they have bought this Australian title home 2 years now..they deserve to be put on there as well.
Well I must admit that I haven't been on this site since the move to SEABL but after hearing all about it recently I thought I'd just add my two cents.
Firstly, a huge congratulations to Rocky and Townsville. They have done our State proud and despite playing in the SEABL, whether you all like it or not, we do still hail from Queensland and are supportive and proud of two National Championships hailing from the Sunshine State for two years in a row. (well I am anyway)
Secondly, while everyone is fighting about QABL v SEABL, forget all that... Like Mugsy said in a previous post, that really doesn't matter. What matters is recognising the achievements of a few LEGENDS of the QABL.
Benny T and Richo. I mean, Benny always has a special place in my heart from juniors and seniors times we've been on the same team but Richo... Mate, there is no more loyal, quality person, team mate then him. He's been around for as long as I can remember and again like a previous post said, he is all about the TEAM and SACRIFICE for a win.
This was evident this season and in the final series but you know what? He's got that National Ring now and nothing else matters. Richo, congratulations to you mate. You have waited a very long time and enjoy it!!!
A number 8 jersey should NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER be worn again by anyone in Rocky no matter what!!!!!! No one will be worthy of filling those shoes for at least the next 20 years, if ever...
If they both decide to retire, the league will miss them. Let's all hope they will stay involved in some capacity because the league need people like them to stay around.
Reading on about people saying it must have cost Rocky alot of money to buy a team bla bla bla, well the reality of it is... that's what it takes. Don't be hating because they work hard in the off season getting sponsorships and cash together to be in a position to attract good players to Rocky.
I know we do that at Spartans, Bundy are obviously starting to do it, I'm sure the far Northern teams do it, Rocky and Mackay do it... Yes they both have unique markets to work in but you know what? People don't just drop money at your doorstep. No matter what the situation is, you still need to have people in place to attract and sell your product to them.
There is nothing wrong with doing that if you are lucky enough to have people in place to do that and organise it all during the off season.
Anyway, enough from me. Just wanted to give credit where credit is due. Enjoy the celebrations, I'd imagine the entire town of Rocky is still drinking and partying... as they should be!!!

I dont think that any of the arguments about SEABL vs QABL are really about just that, I think it is more about people not liking districts.
The argument by big Al was that was the premier competition in the country so I think everyone just enjoys just saying sucked in Al with both QABL teams taking out the comp.

Everyone's entitled to bring a bit of marketing hype for their program. It takes a strong fish to swim against the current. Wouldnt know if they didnt go...point is they're back and everyone can get back to being secretly jealous of Districts and bagging the shit out of them!

ok did i miss something is Districts coming back to QABL?
if they are with two new teams wat are the pool allocations going to be?
I've heard Runaway Bay are a show to get in the league next year, so regardless of what Districts do (better pathway for juniors my arse, how many of their true blue juniors played in their SEABL mens team this year????) I guess the pools shall have to be rejigged.
Also while we're giving props to everyone, a shout out should go to Dave Derwin for getting that UNLV v Select Team game together ... shizzle was off the hook! Gone are the days where we have such games ... should be more of them.

I think you will find only Runnaway Bay are joining the league next year. Districts are to receive cash incentive/benefits from SEABL for playing in 2009 onwards. A deal that sees them receive more money for playing then most teams have sponsorship in Queensland.
I am also told that another Queensland team is being talked to about joining SEABL from 2010. This with Darwin joining really sets the cat amongst the pigeons. No NBL team in Brisbane will really start to have an impact after 2009. A good marketer, who drove say BBI to enter SEABL, would be able to push as the new NBL. Imagaine the promotional side with north versus south games across the river.

whatever
why on earth would anybody throw more money at travelling costs for a worse schedule and not much better competition.
would districts be playing seabl if it wasn't for the cash incentives. hell no.
now they are trying to wreck another association so they can lower their travel costs by having a two game road trip to brissie.
and don't give us that bullshit about the nbl. fact is there were more kids getting nbl contracts from the qabl this year than before. plus i wouldn't be surprised if the nbl was working to put another nbl team in brissie by next year. besides where will districts get their players from now that there is no bullets.
it also seems that the seabl and bigv is currently going through the same shit that super8 and cross did a few years back.
besides i hear that seabl is so sick of getting their arses whiped by the qabl teams that they are pulling out of the acc/aba next year. i guess it must be hard to call themselves the premiere basketball comp in australia when you keep losing.

Seen another Womens Evaluation on this forum thought I would had a touch of realism.
MVP: Kelly Wilson (Mackay)/Brittany Davis (Logan) tie.
How do you split them? Both out outstanding years, basically carrying teams on their backs. Both had poor last games of the season - albeit with not much help from their team mates. Kelly 3/26 from the field in final - if she did that in any other game Mackay would have also lost heavily. Davis' final game was also an offensive nightmare where she couldn't buy a basket, but it was hard to score with three people hanging off her arms. If you can excuse one game each. The Browne kid from maroochy deserves a mention here, as she also carried her team every week.
Coach of the Year: Mackay/Caboolture/Logan/South West
First three took basically ordinary teams in 2007 to unheard off heights in 2008. Logan had never made the finals before at that level and finished season 15-3 including a 2 point and 3 point loss, and a flogging by Townsville - who didn't get flogged by Townsville. Caboolture/Coastal also rose up from the quagmire, and were super competative every game (except for Townsville of course). Mackay were outstanding all year with the heavy workload on Wilson maybe catching up with them at seasons end . SW had an incredible finish to the year, with two tough imports (even though one was free via a visa anomalie) and a great guard rotation. No disrespect to Mark at Townsville, but Buzz Lightyear could have taken the Flames to the title with the depth he had with this group, far too strong in QABL and very deserving winners of National title. It will take some work to overcome the depth and WNBL experience they have up there - it will be a dynasty for a while.
Conferences
North - Townsville and then.............Mackay........then......the rest. Rocky must be disappointed with their year, two imports and a couple of handy recuits, plus the local support - should have made the finals. Cairns are building a team for the future and heading in right direction - a bit of cash to Cox helps. Bundy - boy they try hard - how do they make Bundy trendy? Awesome for Townsville to win national titles last two years, absolutely fantastic. Spartens could not do this when they won all their QABL titles
Central - Weakest conference by far. Some one do the stats - how many out of conference games were won by teams in this conference. Not many I would reckon. See comments on finals system to follow. Maroochy were very hot and cold, when they were on - very tough, when they were off - right off. Brisbane - must be disappointed, was this their worst year ever in their history. Northside improved with a bit of discipline, and if they put as much money into the women as they do the men, and recruit right, they might have something out there - a sleeping giant? Gladstone - see Bundy - would like to see their import play with a bit of help.
South - Toughest conference of the three. Toowoomba possibly only team not to offer much, but others were all competative every time they step on the floor. Gold Coast first five of Thommo, Abele, Abbott, Stubbs and McConnell - should have been the team with the experience and ability to really challenge Townsville this year but they fell away. SW, two Americans should make you tough in QABL - hats off to Carrie M who was awesome in second half of the year as well. Logan put together a team of unwanted castoffs from other clubs, a couple of returning locals, and a US import who hadn't played for two years - awesome job really. Finals experience will be a benefit for 2009. Previous blogger spoke about 3 WNBL players at Logan - not one player with WNBL experience there actually. Megan, Bec, Brittany all signed during the year on QABL performances, keeping it real. Ipswich were tough every single game. Small in stature, but big in heart they busted a gut and made this the toughest conference.
Finals system:
The first round of finals in conference were a farce.
The overall ladder decided top position, fair enough. The in conference games did not reward teams with superior records. Gold Coast record in any other conference would have had them with a home final in first round, but they missed finals altogether. Did Cairns deserve their spot and their overall record?
what is wrong with rewarding great records - no-one would dispute this.
First week
1st - REST
Game A 2nd v 7th
Game B 3rd v 6th
Game C 4th v 5th
Semis 1st v Winner Game C
Winner Game B v Winner Game A then the final ... Not sure how teams would have lined up - but may have produced a finals series worth watching
Something like
Townsville - Bye
Logan v Caboolture
SW v Maroochy
GC v Mackay this would have been a great first round on this years efforts during the season
It is time the distances in QLD did not become the issue. Rewarding teams that perform well throughout the year should be the focus - and maybe we might not get a 50 point blow out in the final.
Overall +ves Townsville - awesome and National Champs, rise of Suns and Logan great for the league, Cairns development of juniors, good signs at Northside
Overall -ves Brisbane - self destruction, Gold Coast missing the finals with a better record than most teams in the finals, the finals system, non-competative final, Logan's after match meal (is there a worse one on offer - rush up for stale Subway?). Poor Central conference on the whole, Toowoomba's import being banned from all three of Toowoomba's night clubs (yes they have 3..or should this be a positive)
Looking forward to next year

Does this make it right!!! Perhaps you would like to go back to having 2 conferences in the QABL. You could call them Super6 and Southern Cross.... (/sarcasm)..
Fact is, we know the current system isn't perfect but considering ALL the factors in Queensland it is by far the best system we have had since the good times ran out in the early 90's.
The last few weeks of the season this year must have been one of the most exciting with most teams still in with a chance right up to the last week.
On top of that I don't think I have seen so many imports in the womens comp as we had this year which is probably because teams are now spending a lot less on travel.
Our pool system is very similar to what they have in the NBA but I don't see people complaining about Atlanta making the playoffs ahead of the many teams with a better record.
So while the current system isn't perfect it is probably one of the reasons the QABL is going from strength to strength. Don't rock the boat...

I cant answer that question about can Cam trigger winning a title these days.
I think they had a good shot this season, I dont think the wizards used there pieces correctly.
When I attended some games this season for the wiz, I think SD and Sykes should have been used more, and times when the game was in the bag, the younger players should have played to get them some game experience preparing them for games down the stretch including finals, instead of letting trigger score as much as he can. That is not a good strategy if you want to win a title. Teams start to recognize the game plan.
Also I hear that Sykes might be going to Maroochy and trigger going to Bundy anyway, so they might not have the same team next season if this is true.
Anyone know?

Not saying it wasn't but was it really the Coaches ability to coach that took these teams to improved showings or the budgets the Associations provided to recruit and pay players that saw them rise a notch? Just a thought?

well at coastal the budget of the association didn't pay players
not one coastal womens player was payed which is and achievement because if you look at the final 4 team coastal were the only team to make it without the help of an import or wnbl player

Now the QABL is compared with the NBA!!! How did we loose the Bullets again?
50 point floggings in past two finals....yeah it is going from strength to strength...hope we get three refs per game in the womens league to help...
no-one is questioning the three conferences, but is such a small competition...why not award a pennant for topping the conference..then have the BEST seven teams contest the finals in an appropriate format
Good point about Coastal, that person....but Coastal did have recruited players as well, I believe
Paying for players has happened for years (to some extent)...value for money, and whether they help the local association are key...no doubt Davis at Logan brought more people in the door, more came to watch women then the men, Parsons probably the same at SW and most probably people came to see Wilson in Mackay/Cox in Cairns
discussion helps things cos' ideas are shared

Now the QABL is compared with the NBA!!! How did we loose the Bullets again?
Nobody was comparing the level of competition but the conference/division/pools system and the finals system is very similar, no..?
And I believe we lost the Bullets due to financial reasons, no..?
The bottom line why the top 6/7 don't play off is because of costs. If you have a look at the QABL budget for the past years where we have had the top teams play off then you will find that 40% of the budget was spent on the finals alone.
There have been people in the past who have said "if you can't afford it you shouldn't be in the league" and that line drove the league for many years until the league was down to 5 teams.
"50 point floggins". Which teams would you put in your top 7 to avoid this..?
Fact is Townsville were just too good. Even at National level. And well done to them. Hopefully it will pull the other teams up.

The fact that both Wilson and Davis didn't play well both against South West or is it because South West didnt allow them too. Food for thought because both girls apparently had there worse games against the same opposition. Go figure.
Blind freddy being able to coach Townsville to a national title? The hard work that Mark Wrobel puts in to that team to get them to that level is a pat on his back and his national title and coach of the year award is very well deserved.

I never said trigger was'nt a good player worth the money. I said the team he was on was not used correctly to win a title. They had more pieces than just him, the big 3, Cam, Sykes, Davis and they had some talent on the bench that was not utilized correctly.
You'd fair dinkum think after the Rockets won the National Title that they might be a chance at holding the Championship Trophy aloft in downtown Rock Vegas. Apparently the trophy was not made available to the team after they won the title in Melbourne.
Somebody is to blame - Cairns Basketball (who still have the Cup) or the Basketball Australia for not being able to present the Cup to the NEW National Champions.......fair suck of the fat one.....when the New York Giants won the Super Bowl earlier this year there wasn't any of this sorry you can't have the Lombardi Trophy cos' it is back in New England.
Maybe we need a proctologist to extract the Trophy from Fearney's ass....and while they are at maybe they can extract Fearney from Jawai's ass.....no wonder they call Fearney ankles now - that's all anyone can see of him.
No doubt the Rockets boys are content still drinking anything that is put before them - thankfully the Townsville women shared their cup with the boys so they had something to drink out of in Melbourne.

it was a killer end to the season i agree with the fact that it needs to be a state wide play off system the pools play off system was a load of rubbish.
i hope for the benefit of the competition tho that logan and townsville dont stack their sides with wnbl talent and share it out to make a better season if they are going to make it a two horse race they may as well play best of 3 in the first two weeks and let every one else play best of the rest.
i thought davis and the sth west import were great to their teams a well needed addition but it is realy necessary to have imports in a state league where their is not much money around the league and winning a league that has no dollar value to win.
i think that some of the other teams could of had better oppitunities for the young players by getting their coaching staff more organised and worked on development for the future rathe rthan a solution for now.
i do believe the an australian veterian would be better value than some of the yanks and if i was in charge at toowoomba id be feeling ripped off at the way price treated her very young team mates.
by the way how in the blue hell did she get in to the wnbl what were adelade thinking??????????
it was a killer end to the season i agree with the fact that it needs to be a state wide play off system the pools play off system was a load of rubbish.
For the next few years at least, clubs will not want to throw around the money for a statewide playoff system.
I thought what we had this year was smart, and worked well for the league. Allowing three teams from the POD to compete in post season play was a sensible idea.
Will be interesting to see what happes next year with Runaway Bay rumoured to be entering. This would throw everything up in the air unless Bundy stepped out.

i hope for the benefit of the competition tho that logan and townsville dont stack their sides with wnbl talent and share it out to make a better season if they are going to make it a two horse race they may as well play best of 3 in the first two weeks and let every one else play best of the rest.
I really do like how people contiually talk about stacked teams, especially the Townsville girls. Lets look at them.
Townsville - Flanagan, Smith (Restricted players); Dalgleish (limitied WNBL minutes in past); Edgar and Haughton (Fire trainining bait, play 11 & 12)
Rockhampton - Carlsen, Jones (Restircted players - Imports); Lewis (now contracted with the Fire in the main group)
South West - Brady, Parsons (Restricted players - Imports)
Logan - Davis (Restricted player - import); Michaels and Haynes (both now contracted with the Thunder main group)
Other teams that included restricted players were Cairns (Cox - Opal), Mackay (Wilson - MVP), Gladstone (Import), Gold Coast (Abbott - WNBL), and Toowoomba (Import).
A great deal of teams are now trying to bolster their teams with restricted players to try and compete and that is great. The unfortunate thing for most others is that Townsville is a one team town with WNBL players in the town. These girls do not get paid enough to pick themselves up and go to a different town every six months for ABA, nor should they be expected to. If they want to play ABA basketball, for which them is a more social form of the game, they are probably going to want to stay where they are living and do it for fun. This is just good fortune for Townsville, particularly as they very rarely play and of the Flames girls, the only one in recent memory who was paid was Cox last year.
There may be a better chance of ABA programs in Brisbane picking up some of the Logan players as they wouldnt have to move towns and could just continue with their normal life.
Instead of throwing stones at clubs for doing a good job i think some clubs need to do some self reflection on how much the ABA means to them and how professionally they want to handle things. Another unfortunate thing for a number of southern clubs in particular is they attitude of the clubs in the pool of death. For them the ABA is treated as a professional league and all of their players are committed 110% which normally includes months of pre-season fitness work and the like. How many of the southern clubs are this committed? Because you know what, this is a semi-pro league, the level below the NBL and WNBL and most clubs will do anything they can to win it. Instead of bitching about other clubs, work to improve yours?

Does anyone know the format for next year. was there a club meeting with qld bball as in previous years at end of season . The current format was set up by warren berginey for a 2 year period . this was done so that over a 2 year time frame everyone would get the same number of home and away games . Will the qabl go into the same format for another 2 years to get another full cycle . with runaway bay in the comp how does this affect the draw . Bundy will definitely be in next year as will coastal ( i believe jett has signed) and the power will be there . i cant see any teams leaving the league . this is the worst time of the year for everyone as the seasons end is still fresh but teams need to know what is going on .
