Does anyone have any thoughts on the top teams for U14 Girls PL this year?

After the state schools championships I think it is going to be a great season for this competition. Met East was unbeaten till the final. And who got em? Met West!
So I think if the girls spread out over the local clubs in their areas it will make for a strong comp.
My picks are SD and Logan in the final after both teams battle it out with BBI and Ipswich. Noone to go through the season undefeated. But i think that SD bigs will dominate until Logans speedy guards foul them out. Ipswich will plod along and be the suprise team of the year.
I am a betting man and this is how I see the season ending, please feel free to remind me at years end when I am right! LOL.

GL to all teams this year, I hope to enjoy watching all of you at some stage or another.

4 Met East girls at districts(2 made state) and 4 met East girls at Logan(1 made state)will definately be a battle of dominant bigs vs skilled quick guards. Can't wait till these two teams play, nothing like former teammates trying to out-do each other!:)

Are Met West girls mostly from Ippy?

Any thoughts on any other teams, is gold coast made up with girls from last seasons S.Cup?
If so they should be a strong side too, if I'm right they entered Div 1 at classics,so that would have been invaluable experience for them.

Good luck to all the girls for the grading tourney, can't wait to watch you all play!

Premier League Grading Tournament is to be held at Carrara, Gold Coast on Saturday 18th October 12pm-7:30pm.
For the teams that miss out on Premier league they will go straight into the Southern Cup Division.

Teams Playing Premier League Tournament: (10 in Total, Top 8 Qualify)

Brisbane 1
Gold Coast 1
Ipswich 1
Logan 1
Maroochydore 1
Northside 1
Runaway Bay 1
South West 1
Southern Districts 1
Toowoomba 1

Predictions are that Toowoomba and Northside will not qualify.

I think that Northside should get through but not sure about SouthWest and Runaway Bay based on what they had in the 12's last year.

I think about half of Runaway Bays U14 PL team last year was bottom age. I think they will probably get through and be competitive.

Is maroochydore the same team as U12's? How many top age players do they have? I can't see them winning many games.

Top 8 teams I think should make it to PL in order :

1- Logan
2- Ipswich
3- BBI
4- Southern Districts
5- South West
6- Runaway Bay
7- Gold Coast
8- Maroochydore

with Toowoomba and Northside missing out on PL. Thoughts.

Just my guess about the make up of the U14 maroochy girls this year, the side has not been finalised yet.

The Maroochydore side will vitrually be the same side that competed in the schools at gladstone where they finished 3rd.

The team will have the strongest 3 bottom agers from last seasons U12 classics winning side. (Milly, Nat & Hayley). Has a good spread of talls and smalls. Should be very competitive this season.

Good luck to all the girls.

BMD offers boost to local junior basketball team

Junior basketball within the Southern Districts Basketball Association has received a boost this week following a two year sponsorship commitment from the BMD Group (BMD).

Based at the Clem Jones Youth Centre, the Spartans Under 14 girl’s team recently took out sixth place at the National Championships in Adelaide – a result General Manager Allan Ladewig attributes to assistance from BMD.

“It was a great result for the girls and with BMD on board to continue their support for the Under 16s team next year, we’re looking forward to future competitions,” he said.

“With this commitment we can now rest assured that the efforts by the team this year will not be lost through time.”
“The support from BMD combined with other local businesses and families has also allowed the Spartans to purchase the equipment needed to ensure young members within our community receive the best possible chance at success at all levels of competition.”

As part of the arrangement, the team will also shortly receive a shooting machine – the first for any Association in Queensland.

“We are very lucky to have such a strong corporate supporter in the community,” he said.

BMD is Australia’s largest privately-owned civil construction, consulting and urban development organisation.

Under the leadership of Group Board Chairman and Managing Director Mick Power, AM, BMD has grown from an annual turnover of $600,000 in its first year of operation (1979), to $646 million in the 2007/2008 financial year.

“We have always maintained our sense of commitment to the local community and we are proud to be associated with the Spartans junior program,” Mr Power said.

The shooting machine is expected to be in place by February 2009 just in time for the Spartans junior program as they prepare for the various State Championships.

waikato won the u15 nz girls nationals beating waitakere in the final 63-62. most of both teams will again be u15 next year. 3 girls that played for waikato at state classics, where they won the final by 32, made the tournament team (lawrence, purcell & wilkinson). Either team would have gone close to winning the oz nationals given that spartans came 6th.

I think that scoring 33 last week and 28 the week before indicates that they do not shoot the ball very well. As well they look to have at least 2 or maybe 4 players in Div2 that probably should be playing PL. Is that a Logan thing that bottom aged players play SC ???

They need a win this week or could be left behind.

Not sure why GC results are such a surprise. Under 12's 2006/2007 did pretty well in both BQJBC and Classics, 2007/2008 Under 14's Southern Cup of predominantly bottom agers performed pretty well in Div 2 at 2008 Classics (3rd or 4th in Div 2 I think) To this core group of girls have added to the mix two strong bottom agers in Krystal and Tessa. It is a long way to go though, but keep up the good work GC girls.

I just witnessed "THE WORST" refereeing in my 45 years of playing basketball. Ipswich just played Spartans on Spartans home ground and it was obvious that the refs were either paid or threatened to make Spartans win. It was absolutely "DISGUSTING". This will not help Spartans either, once they get to Classics they won't have their 6th and 7th players (refs) to protect them. An Ipswich spectator was ejected, the Ipswich Coach was Warned and then tech fouled and there were lots of players fouled off for absolutely no reason at all.

The final score was 50-68 to Spartans PLUS Refs.

WARNING: Be very careful when you play at Carina. I suggest practising a 5 on 7 drill. This might help.

To be quite honest it dosen't matter where you play all the refs are doggy there needs to be a major overhaul because the teams are not winning their games the refs are. What ever happened to having 1 home ref one away ref we would be better off having refs not from either teams to make it fair its disgusting.

Is it true that an Ipswich spectator was ejected from their HOME stadium last week too, and given a 2 week ban? There seems to be a pattern emerging!

Unregistered
22-02-09, 06:04
You are absolutely right. We all have bad refs. They should put that rule in place, I think it's a great idea. It would be great if the problem could be fixed, but in reality all the refs are dodgy so we would just have a dodgy ref from each side possibly trying to over rule eachothers calls.

Sure your not upset because your team lost, played poorly and continued to foul even when it was obvious that the officials were going to call all fouls ???

I think that Ipswich had 2 players fouled off and Spartans had one.

What is disgusting is watching a Ipswich bench official get involved with the refs and throw the shot clock controller at the Ref and then get kicked out of the Stadium.

The Reffing goes either way each week and if you really believe that they were some how influenced by somebody in the Stadium you need to watch another 45 years of basketball.

Enjoy your weekend.

The reffing shouldn't go either way each week you don't get angry if there a mistakes here all their we are all human mistakes happen. I'm talking about all through the game (I'm not the person who wrote the above and I'm not talking about this game) and not pointing the finger at other refs ours are bad as well all we want is a honest game, nobody wants to win in a dishonest way we have two refs a game how many times do you see the 2nd ref over rule a mistake from the 1st ref never. Thats the point of having 2 sets of eyes. OUR KIDS DESERVE A FAIR AND HONEST GAME.

================================================== ===============
Foul count according the QLD basketball website was 31 Ipswich, Spartans 27. Lots of fouls on both sides, game went for over 2 hours.
Teams that play a physical style of game need to adjust their style to suit the way the game is being reffed.
It was obvious at that game that any form of contact was being called. Both teams had numerous players in foul trouble before half time.

I checked the BQ results out as well and got 31 fouls on Ipswich and 29 on Spartans. Doesn't seem like a whole lot of home court advantage to me!!!

What you think if the fouls are even for both teams or close to each other means they are doing their jobs it has nothing to do with it! We are talking about the fouls that are being missed or overlooked.

Just to break it down in case you don't get it ! If a team fouls 23 times but only 15 were counted and the other team got 15 fouls that were correctly done by the ref. Because both teams show even amount in the end must mean no home court advantage your kidding yourself

Putting aside the poor refs I think Spartans have a stack of talent it is terribly unfair that the refs have to smash the dreams of the opposing team though. Let's not forget that the true results will come out at classics, when noone will have bias refs. Don't know about you, but I look forward to it.

Good job spartan girls, and

Is it true that an Ipswich spectator was ejected from their HOME stadium last week too, and given a 2 week ban? There seems to be a pattern emerging!
Maybe its the same one who assaulted a visiting opposition parent bout a year ago but neither BQ nor Ipswich did anything about it.

I too was at that game on Saturday and also thought the reffing was DISGUSTING. Yes, Spartans played well and Yes, Ipswich could have played a better game BUT the ref was unfair and that ruined the game for both sides. Its a shame that the game is in the hands of such a bad ref. 1 spectator being ejected (no, not me), the coach tech fouled and 3 or 4 crying under 14 year olds is ridiculous. Whoever, thinks the game has been ref'd fairly because the fouling numbers were close, obviously has NO idea.

I was at the game on Saturday and witnessed a pretty ordinary game with fouls called both ways and no team disadvantaged by the refs at all.

Get over it parents and let the kids play. Each week there will be calls that you won't agree with but get on with it as it happens every week.

As for the loud mouthed spectator yelling out that the refs were cheats you should be banned from junior sport all together.

Both Ipswich and Districts have some very talented players who need to be mentored in the correct way. Where has all the good sportsmanship gone to?

Ipswich U14 Girls COACH
24-02-09, 06:49
The facts: 4 girls in tears, 3 fouled out of the game, 1 parent ejected, 1 girl given an unsportsmanlike foul for attempting to "Tip the ball" from behind and I was warned and then tech fouled for saying "blow the whistle".

We were down by approximately 20 points at half time, at which point I complained to the officials who stood around for the third quarter which I feel was reffed quite fairly. At this stage we closed the gap by 1 point (43-44). The officials left for the last quarter and Spartans got away again to win by 18 points in the end.

I think Spartans have a very good team, and it seems as though the new coach is doing a really good job with them. Their starting 5 players are very strong and should be recognised for their efforts. It is unfortunate for us that we lost and I don't mind losing, but a fair loss would have been much more appreciated. You may say I am wrong, this is only my opinion.

I don't think my girls played poorly and they are not sore losers, I am proud of their efforts and am glad they could still walk out of that stadium with their heads held high. After all, this is about the kids remember.

Thanks Tee.

This may be the case but they also need to have someone watching the games from the stands plain clothed assessing refs who are not doing there job, just like any job, as they are being paid. There is no use having someone watching, refs knowing they are being watched from the bench it doen't fix the problem. From what I have seen some refs from Redlands, Caboolture, Districts control the games(are Dodgy) some younger Logan refs need to go back to traing because they just don't have a clue are not up to the level for rep.

Well said Coach Tee. I saw the game and thought all of the Ipswich girls handled themselves very well.

In regards to the unsportsman like foul, I thought it was because of the new rule, no other defensive player was between her and Districts basket and as you said she fouled from behind.

(Art. 36.1.4 Unsportsmanlike foul

If a defensive player causes contact with an opponent from behind or laterally in an attempt to stop a fast break and there is no opponent between the offensive player and the opponents' basket, then the contact shall be judged to be unsportsmanlike.)

It appeared at least that there was sportmanship between the teams on the court.

To be quite honest it dosen't matter where you play all the refs are doggy there needs to be a major overhaul because the teams are not winning their games the refs are. What ever happened to having 1 home ref one away ref we would be better off having refs not from either teams to make it fair its disgusting.

Whilst that seems a good idea, we try to have a team culture, which should include refs. For this to actually happen you would need BQ to actually take control of all the refs for all the games in all the venues. At my team, some of the ref's also play so that could also be a problem. Would it stop a this perceived reffing issue - maybe - definitly not. this is and will be a major topic in all age groups. Unfortunatley we cant play this great game without them, and going to court supervisors has never had a ref removed or scores altered.

Big call naming associations, I think that all teams get some 'home court' advantage from the refs, rightly or wrongly. Some more than others - clean up your own court before you start naming others. These refs are apparently human and do make errors

I'm not saying all the refs need to be followed up on most do a terrific job Im talking about hand ful a refs that need attention and I'm not talking about little mistakes but if we don't say something nothing will get fixed and this will only become a bigger problem. Associations don't want a bad name but if one ref isn't doing there job wouldn't you want to no about it ? These day no one complains because nothing get done about it or your the problem not all people are out to get others its called fixing the system my own court included.

Beware" Districts Refs are CHEATS!!!!!

I think that whilst the refing was a big impact on the game it didn't change the result. The third quarter where Ipswich came back saw 4 of Districts starting 5 on the bench for the majority. So I wouldn't attribute the comeback solely to the Ref's supervisors watching.

I didn't think that the refing was so bad, however it was definitely not consistent with every other week. If the refs can be consistent across all associations, it would go a long way to making the kids learn what is going to get called each week.

Clearly we cannot rewind the clock and go back to that game and try come away with a different result. Yes at the classics we can only hope that being the event that it is that we get the quality refs we need to do justice to all teams no matter what. There is a lot of talent in queensland under 14 girls games playing hard and fast that leave rugby and rugby league behind. One thing that has appeared on rep games that I have been watching are refs coaching teams when they should be reffing them. Im not going to bag the refs anymore because its quite clear what a lot of people feel about them in general. I find basketball exciting im sorry other people prefer to sit and watch in silence I wish I had the same strength to contain myself...yeah whateva!! Every chance I get im gonna SHOUT and SUPPORT my daughter sorry if you dont like it. WELL Hey you could always wait till you get home and put your comments online.. Im loving basketball and HEY maybe once at a while I will shout at the ref if I feel like it.. ITs all part of the game.. Dont get offended now dont want you to have a hard attack..

I just want to congratulate both the Ipswich and Spartan U14 girls for the most exciting and eventful game of basketball i have ever watched and had the privilege of witnessing. Yes basketball should be a fun game and with its history especially in top level such as NBA, with all the disgruntled fans getting hauled out of the stadiums for swearing at da ref, with top coaches getting teched and escorted off the courts i for one would like to thank the Ipswich team and supporters for providing such authenticity to this level of the game. There are a lot of talented young girls in both these two teams and yes i agree their talent needs to be guided and they need to be mentored. I feel that it is a shame that two grown men giving the opportunity to guide, promote and empower the talent of our young players are the very same whom on this occassion managed to make 14 year old girls feel untalented, unskilled and discouraged with the game.
I am looking forward to the rest of the season and to the next meeting of these two teams and if we the parents can not be passionate to support our children and our love of the game with a little outburst here and there then wheres the fun in that....way to go i say to da loud mouth spectators from Ipswich....at least you have the balls to be loud and to say it to the ref in their face instead of in a forum such as this......

"I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!"

There is a player code of conduct, there is a coach and manager code of conduct, there is a spectator code of conduct AND there is a parent code of conduct. And yes there is an officials code of conduct.

YOU need to read and take in every word of whichever code of conduct you fall within....and you say "support my daughter" support her by showing sportsmanship while watching her play. Do not be such a drama wannabe, get over your arrogant attitude and your daughter will develop into a very happy, stable player.

If you think that calling out from the Grandstands that the Refs are cheats , throwing a shotclock at the ref , chesting up to the Ref and getting kicked out of the stadium are somehow acceptable then you have got it all wrong.

It is not part of the game, its thuggish boorish behaviour by people that have no understanding of the game and no respect for authority.

Get over it and get on with the rest of the season. Support your kids be loud ,

MATE! Are you for real! there is a difference between showing support for your daughter and VERBAL ABUSE! The referees should be RESPECTED they are a vital part of the game whether you like it or not. I am a referee, I understand that I can NEVER make everyone in that stadium happy, I understand that no matter what I will NEVER go an entire game make 100% correct calls/no calls but what in gods name give YOU the right to abuse a referee because they made a mistake???

I don't see any parents on the other team yelling at your under 14 child if they happen to turnover a ball? You need to remember that your daughter is playing u14, you need to remember that refereeing isn't as easy as you may think, you need to remember that there is a difference between ABUSING a referee (as it was an 14game i assume a junior) and SUPPORTING your child and finally you need to remember that there is a code of conduct.

Abuse is NOT tolerated and nor should it have to be!

I encourage you to cheer for you daughter, her team mates. I challenge you to cheer for the opposition when a child pulls off something, despite the fact their not from your team and I challenge you go sit a level 0, pick up a whistle and even try reffing an u12 club game....

P.S
"way to go i say to da loud mouth spectators from Ipswich....at least you have the balls to be loud and to say it to the ref in their face instead of in a forum such as this......"

I couldn't have said it any better myself. Focus on encouraging your kids, not abusing the refs.

To those thinking it's ok to jump up and abuse the refs "to their faces", I say this: Enjoy getting banned from your association and having to explain to your kids why they're not allowed to play Basketball there anymore.

Valid point. Regretfully it is not only parents who involve themselves in "Ref Rampage", but also coaches. Restraint needs to be shown by all parties (adult) to give the kids the right example.

What A JOKE.. WHy do you fools ASSUME that I abused the REF???? For Goodness Sakes you people seem to want to get things off your chest but you are aiming at the wrong person. Why am I getting the impression that you think it was I that abused or whatever the ref?? Yes I was at the game but I was shouting to encourage my own daughter. If you go back and read my comments youll see that I only said once in a while I would shout at the ref if I felt like it. Im sorry if you interpreted that as abusing the ref which is not what I meant. But why do I need to justify myself. I do accept that a referee's job is not easy and Im going to leave it at that. Only a handful of games left now. What are your predictions?

IPSWICH versus GOLD COAST

I reckon this will be a close game. Im going for Gold Coast to start well and IPSWICH to come through fighting hard. The REF will be trip over at second half. A brawl will erupt in the stands. Police will arrive to escort referees out of the building.... COME ON PEOPLE CANT YOU TAKE A JOKE!! Sorry I better be careful what I say some PEOPLE might take it literally..

If you are from the IPSWICH BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION maybe you should go through the correct channels to find out what really happened before you say something you shouldn't. I really don't think it's appropriate to condemn someone on the basis of some information you read online. No one really knows what happened but everyone is seems to think they do. So if you are who say you are I expect you have a way of dealing with this properly. It's kind of unfair to judge someone if you dont know the full story don't you?

If you feel like you need counselling then Im sure there are plenty of HELPLINES in your local area cause you sure aint gonna get it here online...

Lets get on with it people..

GOOD LUCK to all teams for this weekend..

i was the ref that responded to your last post, and i didnt assume that you were the one thrown out, i was simply reacting to the fact you think its ok to jump up a give the ref a serve

you say once every now and then

whether its once a game, once a week or once a month it is STILL not acceptable behaviour....

I think that enough is enough and we should all move on, its been a week! No matter what has happened no-one can change the past, we can only move on. Good luck to everyone at Under 14 classics and may the best team win.

Maybe some parents who respond to these comments should be careful with the assumptions they're making. Yes don't assume that the one who posted this comment is the very same person who called out the ref is a cheat don't assume that i am the very person who swore at the ref and was ejected from the score bench and don't YOU DARE assume that my daughter is unhappy and and an unstable player, don't assume that i am some arrogant thug and i'm pretty sure i know how and what thuggish behaviour is and i would not want to go there...but I am a parent who will support my daughter and her team mates whether there are parents fighting in the middle of the court, or whether the ref is blantantly cheating and if i need to scream at the top of my lungs and if i need to bring the house down so be it and if you have a problem with my shouting and cheering then next time you hear me or someone like me feel free to come up to me and voice your concern then instead of assuming because you know what they say about assume...you make an ASS out of YOU and ME....

build a bridge....i'm already over the other side and sailing into the blue yonder....

Let's all remember this person is from Ipswich, and his ridiculous and emabarassing posts only confirm what most already think of that part of the SE Quensland. Be disgusted but don't be suprised!!

BE VERY CAREFUL. The place a person comes from does not determine their behavior. Anyone that suggest as such lacks intelligence. Do not start something you will regret.

If there is a problem with views on coaches, parents, stadiums, refs put it on another section leave this site for the girls or to let each other no our scores and who played well. Or upcoming events keep the bad behaviour away from our kids.

Spartans played brilliantly had a rough 3rd quarter when only 4 points was scored for both teams this will make it very interesting!!!

Ipswich U14 Girls COACH

Hi all
It's wonderful to see the passion of the parents, which is one of the great reasons I moved from Southwest to Ipswich approximately 3 years ago, however this needs to stop. Come on Ipswich parents, instead of getting all caught up in what is going on, let's focus our efforts on other areas, such as how we can better our children and how we can continue to make Ipswich Basketball as successful as it is.

I would appreciate if we kept this forum to commenting on predictions, achievements and positive experiences.

Let's bear in mind, that we are all a part of Basketball Queensland and that one day our children may or may not end up playing on the same team, so let's not only support our own associations but also those that we play against.

Yes at times we may feel a little hard done by, unfortunately that just comes with the game of basketball, rather than complain, let's do something about it. So what are we going to do about it?

Thanks Tee.

Ipswich Coach, I watched some of your disgusting, petulant display during the Districts game, and in my view, you were the reason for your players being in tears, and aided in a parent being ejected. As a coach, your role is to encourage your players to play to the rules and to the best of their abilities, not to make them feel "we were robbed" by every call that goes against them.
You are a terrible role model for the young girls under your charge and, unless you are able to keep your emotions in check, should have no place in junior sport.

I trust the last entry is not from anyone associated with the U14 Spartans girls team as I have asked a moderator to check. Enough is enough the game in question was a week ago.

I spoke with the Ipswich coach after the game and one of her players who displayed exceptional sportsmanship in telling the bench that she did in fact miss two free throws.

Too many people behind the scenes are carrying on with grievances that the coaches and players have moved on from. I still rate Ipswich as one of the best teams in the competition and apart from the challenge, never really look forward to playing them, regardless who the refs are.

Besides the comment before yours, looks like the silly remarks have stopped. You're right, that could have been from anyone, trying to keep the foolishness going. I'm sure if my coaching was as disgusting as mentioned in the previous comment I would have been ejected too, so no harm done. Thank you for mentioning the sportmanship of one of my players, it's great to hear the positives. As mentioned previously, you are doing a great job with your girls, and your No.5, wow, she is an excellent player. Congrats on your excellent win against Logan.
Cheers
Tee.

Really? Then help me understand how it is that their other posts have been to do with Spartans results?

Seriously guys & gals. Stop the crap talking. This moderator is getting sick of having to look at it. I really don't want to come into this thread because someone's complained of mud being thrown at coaches, refs or associations.

Love the game, follow your teams, just cut the crap. 'k?

Some cracking games this weekend which will have a huge bearing on the final four.

(7-5) IPS vs RB (8-4)
Both teams desperate for a win here, could be the end for IPS if they lose, RB have GC next week and could potentially end up 5th.

(10-2) GC vs Marooch (8-4)
A win to Marooch could secure a top 4 place depending on the IPS/RB game . A loss could have them struggling.

(4-8) Log Vs Sw (1-11)
SW on a roll ???????

(1-11) BBI vs SD (9-3)
SD should consilidate 2nd place here but cannot take this game for granted.

Enjoy.

Just looking at the TON results it looks like Townsville are going to be scary good.
Results if I read them correctly.

Defeated Cairns by 40
Defeated Mackay by 70
Defeated Mulrgave by 80
Defeated Rockhampton by 90.

Saw this team last at the U12's classics in Cairns two years ago and they were miles ahead of anyone else. Had much more height than anyone , well drillled and coached and ready to play every game.

Interested if anyone has any more info.

How does everyone see Classics going this year? These are my picks:

Gold Coast: Very consistant with a couple of excellent guards, should make top 3.
R/W Bay: Again consistant and solid off the bench, could make top 4 if we play to form.
Districts: The best guard and big in the comp, but not enough depth. Top 4 or better, but wouldn't be surprised if they drop a spot or 2.
Maroohy: Can beat them all on the day, but not enough consistancy 5-6th
Ipswich: Strong solid team that can surprise on the day 5-6th
Townsville: Should top their pool and play in the final.

A very fair summation. If it is the same Townsville side that won the U12 classics two years ago they will be very hard to beat.

Of the southern teams Gold Coast probably have the edge in talent with four very strong players and are my tip to make the final against Townsville. Having said that any of the other teams mentioned are capable of making the finals with a bit of luck in close results and hitting form at the right time.

Good luck to all the girls.

Agreed with everything so far but I will pick Ipswich as my smokey , maybe not to win but they have the height, size and aggression that could upset some teams on the way through. They will have to temper that aggression as the Refs at Classics will call everything.

1. Townsville
2. Gold Coast
3. Spartans
4. Ipswich
