Looking Back at this age group from U12's you would think that Logan, Gold Coast and BBI are leading favourites, though you then have to put in 1 or 2 North teams as well which should make for an interesting season

Was it just a freakish year this year? It seemed every team had at least one sometimes two bigs around 6' (183cm)? Brisbane had 2, SD 3, Maroochy 2, Ipswich 1 or 2, Toowoomba 1 Who have the bigs for 2009?

Brisbane 1&2
Gold Coast 1

oh I think Logan will be as good as advertised, sure they maybe be beatable, if you catch them on a bad day and you shoot the lights out! but except on those days I think there will be some distance between them and the rest.
re RB i am not sure if they got enough players from GC to make a difference? guess we will have to wait and see!

I don't think to many Associations are taking the risk of saying whether there teams have had any practice matches. As this is a age group that teams go to Nationals everyone is keeping a lid on their team.
We'll all just have to wait and see at the Grading Tournament.

All This hype about scores etc is just garbage. The teams only play 1 half of a game per round so teams being able to dominate and win by more than 20 is stretching what is going to happen on the day. Each game is going to be very close with only a couple of points seperating the scores. Games are going to be won and lost with free throws/loose turnovers and hustle plays. Teams who think they are going to walk in and have a free trip to PL are going to get a big surprise if they are not prepared.

They are 12 deep and scary good!
I believe Noosa got in not 'Woomtoomba' town. Noosa too fast and capitalised on a tired Toowoomba. How do I know? I reffed it!!!!!
From my side of things it was a cruel way to determin the last spot in SC, those boys were so tired they had nothing left to give. Toowoomba had 30 minutes between their 2nd last game and playing Noosa. Noosa's hunger and longer break was the difference between the 2 teams. By all means not sayng they dont deserve their spot. Toowoomba's centre is 1 big lad at 6ft at 12/13yrs old. Love to see him in a few years with a bit of agression in him, he will be unstoppable.
Finally, well done to the Redlands boys in qualifying, quite a few new rep players in the team. Good job coach in blooding our future players. I applaude what you have done with your team.

I think Pool C was the toughest in terms of competition for PL spots. Runaway Bay picking up some some key players from Gold Coast. Gold Coast played against Logan in the Classics grand final 2007 and Brisbane were the only team to beat Logan in this age group in that year. Results from this year (2008) do not really have a bearing, as all impact players (Ralphy, Cody, Regan etc) move up to U16. I expect Runaway Bay and Brisbane will make the top four with Logan and the other could be anyone.

Logan looks head and shoulders above most teams, but cant say they will be as theyre pool was quite easy, but the do look very good, the brisbane/gold coast/runaway bay pool was deff the toughest but all 3 got in, sd looked very good in there games they played i was told they didnt want to play there last game seeing if they could forfet as they already made it so looks like they ran there bench, ippy look solid aswel, top 4 look like, logan, and then runaway bay, sd, bbi going at it for 2nd place

I think you have misunderstood previous post. There are three players from the U12 2007 State Classic championship team that won in Cairns, Jessie "Swish" Elbers , Aleck "Ferarri" Margetts and Scottie "Lights Out" Day . They also have bottom ages, Isaac Boehme and Jake "Big Heart" Beaver from the 2008 Classics Championship winning team. Jacob Hartley, Wyatt Sampson, Jayden Burns, Mitchell Smith and the big Logan 2 had was Josh McColl. He moves well for a big kid and will interesting to see him develop over the season. I think the Logan 2 boys will grow with the experience and be a contender for the Swap over challenge.
Playing for Queensland is not the true mark of a baller ask any player representing Qld at U20 and they will tell you how much state teams change from U16 to U20. Every year BQ produces quality players through state teams but its the ones that have faced tough situations and have the resilence and commitment to persist that become QABL players or NBL players. When you get to open age you are competing against all the best players from each age group across 15 to 20 years. You better be prepared for a little hardship when you leave the safe haven of junior basketball.
I would think national state schools championships are comparable to nationals maybe not quite as tough in terms of preparation etc but still a chance to test yourself against other talented players.
Logan were going to put three other State Championship winning players into the Grading tournament from Logan 1 which probably would have got the Logan 2 team over the line and into PL however, they would not be able to rotate players between the 1 & 2 teams as they quite possibly would have been in the same division.

LOL - these 3 live and breathe basketball. They probably put in more hours each week than most senior players. They shoot long range, fadeaway, alley etc, whatever the occasion calls for. What would you know about etiquette - you might want to check your spelling and grammar next time. 4/10 for your effort.

Sorry I offended you. I think your short selling children's ability at this age. I have coached these kids and they can shoot. You won't find a more technically correct shot then Jessie and Scottie can hit em deep. He once hit 4 threes in a row against my club team. They get a kick out the nicknames. If you are still a non believer come down to the courts some time and try your arm against either. I'll back Jessie from mid range and Scottie from the arc.

What may be difficult to appreciate is the depth and level of commitment that logan juniors coming through at the moment have for the game. This goes a long way in explaining why for the past 2 years Logan have dominated the U12 and now U14 rep scene.
The coaching staff are technically more than sound especially Pete Pollock (whom you have had the pleasure of bagging for his bad etiquette) who has now had these boys under his feet for nearly 3 years running. Not only does he spend many hours training them 3 maybe 4 times a week (including Sunday mornings) but every waking moment he has is spent plotting their development and bettering their skills. I would find noone more qualified than he to hand out nicknames of that ilk....

Scottie and Jessie developed their own shots. I can not remember giving any comment on their shooting over the last two years. Jessie has the luxury of a big brother and a hoop and no doubt has spent countless hours deciding who is the 1 on 1 champ of the family and I know the Day family have had complaints from the neighbours about the ball bouncing on their half court late into the night with his older brothers.
We train twice a week during rep season and an optional shoot or scrimage on a Sunday occasionally when courts are available. A few of the boys play other sports during winter which keeps them fresh. It will get a little harder to manage their workload as they move into high school as there will be times when school trainings and studies will place more demands on their time.

Why is it PARENTS or players need to ask the question who played the best each week to have their names high lighted. Your time will come if you are good enough later on. At the moment all it should be about is team basketball. Thats what makes you a better player, Not who are the ball hoggers.

We have 6 players left after the other 6 have state commitments, one is a big out with an ankle and I do not know when he will be back on court. Hard to play with 5 or 6. We ARE 12 deep not 9 deep. Could we compete with 5 or 6? Yes! Could we win? Possibly. Not afraid of any team we play but certainly respect every team we play. Having half the team out representing the state would warrant cause for rescheduling of games I would think. Are we that good we could beat "two lower place teams" (your words not mine)? Don't know! Happy to scrimmage to find out! Give me a call.

how was the logan vs bay game?
any comments on the game?
Bay had patches of good play. The Bay guards created some easy baskets passing through the press early on but not consistently enough to hurt Logan. They did not handle the full court pressure that well as the game progressed. At the start of the third/fourt, Bay had a number of turnovers which allowed Logan to skip away. Bay rebounded well, probably won the boards. Bay were not able to put pressure on Logan in full court or half court. Scoring was spread amongst Logan while Bays points were mainly from 2 players. Logan missed a lot of easy baskets. IMHO Bay need to work on an effective press, tiighten their half court D and drill their press breaker a lot more as it did work early on.

What does this say about our standard of play? Logan had 6 players in that team yet Logan has won every game in PL by 25 points+ so far. Qld lost to silver medalist NSW by 15 and bronze medalist ACT by 38. Vics beat NSW by 15 in crossover and 7 in gold medal game. We seem to be a little off the mark. Looking at VJBL the scores are a lot lower then PL results, better defence being played. We (PL teams) need to be able to creat more pressure with our defence and a lot tighter. Thoughts anyone?

I agree I know in Southern Cup defence is a major issue in our games. Does not come up anyway near as much as offense during training. Some coaches need to be harder on their teams to put the pressure on.

If you look at the results over the past few years at both this tournament and u14 natioanals, you will see that not all qld are doing that good.. With that being said i disagree that we just have to improve our defense, at the u14 nationals just gone in september the standard in play is huge difference from vic to qld. the ippy and sd teams were a level above everyone in qld but at a nationals tournament they both finished 2 -5, the things that we are lacking is basic fundametal skills which is the problem with most teams and sometimes with how coaches, coach.. Vic focuses on individual fundamental skills which then when your in a team sense just runs together because they all understand what to do, then game situations they just react, an example is when a player gets double team vic players would retreat dribble let the double come but be patient and pass the ball under less pressure, while most qld players will try to dribble through it and pick up there dribble under pressure and throw a lob pass, which will get either stolen or not going where its supposed to. basic fundamentals is what we need to be working on, we need smart players coming through the ranks so then when they reach the next level they know how to react

My point exactly! Our PL teams do not create any extended pressure with their D and very few teams try. You are right about them reacting with the Vics. They see those situations every week . Our players certainly have the skills to execute but lack the exposure to defensive pressure and when confronted with less time and space to execute the skill or decision making breaks down. Logan beat SD twice earlier in the season mainly because they did not handle the press that well. SD certainly got better as the season progressed. Ippy /SD were clearly the best two by seasons end. Certainly the most talented. Check out the results of VJBL.

In VIC the tougher games, winning scores are around 45.
All the winning scores in the last round of PL were all over 60 or more.
Kids in Victoria are not inheritly smarter than Qld kids. The Vic kids have however, a completely different history of experiences playing tougher games week in week out. Our kids have not and it shows when we go to Nationals. We need to get our D to a point where players are pressured full court each game.

If that was the case, then why has Qld done so poorly at Nationals for the past 25 years? Players only play in an age group for 2 years, but many coaches keep on plugging away for year after year getting mediocre results. You only get out what is put in!

Examine BQ coaching appointments and the way they choose them and you'll have a clearer idea.

Nothing to do with coaching appointments. Have we only had good coaches when we win a National championship? I don't think so! We usually have had a talented group of players and they would have had a decent coach in those championship years, as most Qld coaching appointments would be. Not having the player numbers and access to competition Vics have, how do we give our kids that exposure. Personally I thought that having the NZ team competeing at the Classics was a great initiative. They were tough. Sorry to bring that up Moose, ;) but it was good for all involved who played against them. I have no problem with teams coming to our Classic and kicking our ass but teams do need to be recognised as Qlds best team as SD girls eventually did.
Terry's team from Ippy was competitive at Nationals with the top teams. Tough coach well drilled team. SD got better as season progressed talented group, promising young coach. But it is hard to keep a team focused and training after Classics to Nationals. Should we have an Invitational Tournament MayDay or July school holidays, Ekka week perhaps??? Vics finish their rep season in September and start in October I think. Thats got to give you an edge.

Nah. You've got things to learn. Can think of a couple of pretty talented sides went away with coaches not up to the same standard and had very lack lustre tournaments. That sort of thinking will get you far with BQ though...maybe even a state job!

Always willing to learn. Coaches are always an easy target with your sort of thinking. It ain't easy to win a championship even harder in a tournament format. Look at our most experienced coaches. BP has an NBL championship but SEABL title has not come his way yet with SD. My point is, if we were on the money with our standard of play Qld teams would be consistently playing the Vics in the finals. Vics have dominated last two years. Numbers and strength/length of competition are against us. Other then blaming the coaches how do we bridge the gap?

Improve the standard of coaches BQ offers the positions to. I think you'll find BP was the last coach to get a gold medal for QLD and Ron Heilbron a bronze. Havent seen either of them back since???

Don't know! Got to get there first. Looking at the talent and size of Ipswich and SD this year and following their results at Nationals it would be a tough ask. Our wins have largely been the result of our ability to create and sustain full court pressure. We are untested against any team that can deal with it and do the same to us. JC had a good story when he coached SW U14 with Teyes Bairstow Motum. They went well thru PL finished top of their pool at Classics. Mackay missed a game in their pool for some reason and forfeited. They crossed over in the semi and lost a close one, which kept them out of a Nationals spot. They did however travel to play in a Vic tournament and it was the best thing for them. For any Qld team to have the best chance they need to have had a lot more tough games. Ipswich and SD only had a handful of tough games this year. Vics start same time as us but finish in September and get tougher games week in week out. Not saying we should extend our rep season but may be a tourny somewhere in the year the 3 qualifiers and an NZ team ( sorry Moose) Some forums have suggested that while the Vics dominate they do not produce dominate players. I wonder if it is because of the length of season.
Then there is always the x factor of one kid who can dominate. Who is the kid from NSW? No doubt my scouting service will have the goods on him when we train on Thursday!

Running your kids on a team with quality experienced/seniors players in your local A grade comp on a week night has worked in the past as a stop gap measure. Generally find the seniors enter into the spirit against the young guys with regards the physicality (and if they dont then the referees look after the kids!) and/or enjoy the night off to rest injuries whatever. Personally I dont think the Vics are any more athletic or talented than us, maybe have better (paid) coaches available to them at those associations with the 9-10 courts and licenced club attached and probably arent as fit as Queensland kids due our lifestyle weather and leisure pursuits. For mine the Vics win a lot by sheer weight of numbers that play the sport in their very well organised structured and financial Associations.
Perhaps if like minded Associations up here could look at running invitational tournaments between themselves, say 3-4 clubs for the weekend, and do it at a cost effective/user friendly/association level rather than an expensive BQ production it could add games experience for our youngsters. The thing is WHEN do these kids get the time for even more competitions when they have PL/Schools/QAS etc etc.

Last season the SD team went down to vic to play in the danenong tournament, learnt alot through it and made the ajustments, maybe something that the top teams should look at on a regular basis? this years logan team would have a good dig at it. SD team played 3 games down there, lost to d'nong by 14, beat SA by 1, lost to knox by 4, the tournament was start of June

I thought they got it pretty much right. Different coaches may have selected a slightly different team. There is no real reason to name other players. Use non selection as motivation to improve.

WTF I went to the psg for new and not one player there could dunk it. Now we vsed them in the grandfinal and lost by 6 points or somthing. They are all beatable. Logan will not win the nationals because of the night but that doesn't meen anything at this age. Now nsw beat Queensland by 20 points but that was an outstanding effort due to the fact we had 6ft 2 player and a 6ft 3 player who was the only person at the psg that was close to dunking. Queensland isn't a strong age group at the moment but they have the same skills as the Victorians except they had one 6 ft5 guy. U will just see what these Logan bois will turn into. Queensland is training everyone well and is doing a great job. Logan may go to through Underfeated but they may not. But there is only one team who can stop them

While watching my neice play at SD on Sat nite We glanced over at the under 14 boys playing, both SD teams. One young boy was fouled off and proceeded to kick the chair of his own home stadium. Disgraceful behaviour, coaches appeared to laugh, he didnt leave the stadium. He should be grateful he has comfy chairs to sit in, not try to damage them because he got his 5th foul. SHAMEFUL behaviour that didnt seem to be acknowledge by refs or coaching staff. I wonder if it had been another team would the result have been the same???????

Worst game of the year by districts - nothing would fall in. Should have won the game by 20+ points but poor finishing made it exciting.
Went from 7 up at half time to 7 down at 3/4 time, but came back from the dead in the last 3 minutes to grab the points by 5.
