i think all this stuff on christian is either being misunderstood or not typed correctly
i think everyones trying to say its not just christens whos being competive when his bottom age because more kids are improving in leaps and boundes and starting to be completive against the year level above
and the top age boys are only 13/14 ease off
Thoughts before grading???

Just a Question.

Who's going to be trialing at the grading challenge? Which clubs and how many teams? Are there any clubs out there with potentially 2 teams in the PL comp?

We will only take the firsts team i think. Maybe a couple of other age groups will also be trialing.

Good luck to all the N/S boys in their trials. Haven't had the pleasure of playing you guys before but look foward to the challenge.

Play hard and enjoy your game boys.

Cause at the end of the day, it is YOUR game.

All Associations will trial, cause all associations will hope they qualify. It is a huge jump from 14s to 16s specially for bottom 16s playing with top 16s, but its all a learning and development time for these young ones.

Top 5 in no particular order, NS, BBI, Logan, SW,Runaway, ....last spots not sure.

I think that this age group has the largest difference with the boy's ability and physical growth between top age and bottom age. What does everyone else think?

I agree, there is a big difference in size and more importantly psychology between bottom-age U16 Boys and top-agers. Can be a bit of a wakeup call for kids who were King of the Castle in U14 PL stepping up against bigger boys in U16s...all power to coaches like Ollie at BBI and Al and NS who succeed in getting their younguns into PL, competing as bottom-age and then convincing them to back up again as top-agers the season after.

As a parent of a 16 boy last season, my biggest learning curve was being the parent of ONE of the "King of the Castle" as he came from u14s to 16s. Alot of humility and patience was learnt by not just him but by myself as well... as he played against top age boys that were a foot taller than him and as wide in stature. So much needs to be considered with these "younguns", and a heck of a lot of support from parents. Good luck everyone, especially coaches, managers and PARENTS.

We are trialing in an U 20's comp through our club every week, but we are also looking for trial games in the September school holidays.

Please contact me at coach.billy@hotmail.com if you are interested.

Willing to help out with any U14 PL or U18 coaches if they need. We just want court time for the boys. Available Sat nights or Sunday arvos.

So as far as I know there are 12 teams looking to make the 8 for premier league this year;

Brisbane 1 & 2
Northside
Logan
Runaway Bay
Maroochydore
Coastal Suns
Southern Districts
Redlands
Gold Coast
South West
Ipswich

This should make for a very interesting tournament...
Who thinks they know who the eight are going to be...does anyone have any inside info?
I know a couple of the teams will be fielding a lot of bottom age players, but has there been any off season player movement. I've read the 'rumours' here, but does anyone have any confirmed moves?
Does anyone know if any of the above teams won't be attending the grading tournament?
I guess the one thing that is assured is that the 8 teams that make PL should be pretty close with no one team guaranteed dominance. It will mean every team has to turn up ready to play every week...bring it on!

ALW
25-08-08, 10:01
My guess for top 8 are :

Brisbane 1
Northside
Logan
Redlands
South West
Runaway Bay
Coastal Suns
Ipswich

My NS team will have many bottom age players in it.

So who has officially moved? Christian back to Sth West, BBI big to Logan, did Runaway Bay and Gold Coast exchange players? Did Maroochy and Coastal do the same?

As for the grading tournament I think all the teams listed in previous post should attend, if not to make PL it is just a good warm up to the season.

If these movements r true then SD have lost 3 best guards & a big - they will struggle to make PL.
BBI is getting 3 quality players - their 1 & 2 team will make PL.
Logan is fast becoming the team to beat - Logan & Brisbane top 2 in PL.

I hear there will be 3 divisions this season. Will there be a grading tourney for the lower grades as well? Be interesting to see the make-up of this years comp. But I'm sure it will help with the grading for classics. It is a good move for BQ to equal out the competition so we don't have certain teams being pummeled week in and week out. Its not good for kids to be beaten like this every week.

RE:PL
I think that it is going to be a good contest to fill the last 5/6 spots as BBI and Logan are a shoe in. Northside to fill the 3rd spot definately. But the rest are open to the team's who really want to be there. The team's who don't make the cut will certainly dominate SC and come challenge time, I think it will be a lot closer than last years challengers.

I didn't want my boys to challenge last year because they were bottom age and weren't dominating in SC, and it was the weekend before an important game for us. We only wanted to finish top 2 in SC. To be honest we didn't even think we'd be there at season start. To make the GF exceeded all my expectations and goals I had preseason.

Good Luck to everyone at the grading tourney, me & my boys can't wait for the weekend to come around.

There will be a grading tournament for SC if more than 12 teams nominate for an age group. Not quite sure how it will work though if 12 reams nominate for premier leauge grading tournament, 4 will be left out, do those 4 teams then then have to be graded in the southern cup grading tournament aswell?

May I ask a question ALW? I know you'll answer it honestly.

Why do coaches do that.... not select teams after 2-3 trials? As a playa it is so frustrating to go trial after trial with a glimmer of hope when you're most likely gonna get cut down the track. Many coaches do this especially to the bottom age kids, keeping them hanging til a week prior to the start of rep season then they are dropped.

Our coach has told all our bottom agers the same, lucky there are only a handful of them. Yet it is clearly obvious 1 or 2 of them are way in over their heads, running right now with the top agers.... why don't coaches do the kind thing at the start and cut them straight away.

No worries, happy to answer that.

In my case we are holding trials for 1 more week as we have had 22 attend the trials. We have a view to make 2 sides from this group but are unable to find a coach to work with the 2nd side.

So rather than make cuts after 3 sessions and leave our juniors with no rep training for a few weeks while we wait for a coach, we run the whole group.

My outlook is that it is more a training session, than a trial - so at the least the boys improve week-to-week.

I understand your need to do this thanks for responding.

I think it is an individual coaches choice to do this with the number of kids that turn up to trial. We had over 30 at our first trial...luckily the 1st and 2nd coach did the humane thing and let the "impossibles" go after the 2nd trial, leaving the squad with 24, 12 in each side. 1st coach is still running several bottom agers for final 4 spots.

There are some extreme cases though were the coach nominates top 7 then runs the other 4 up and down thru half of the season. This is unfair to the kids and parents. The coach needs to be cruel to be kind and let the players and the parents down quickly.

no worries at all.

was good that the team was cut into 2 teams of 12.

the top 7 is something worth considering for some teams. key to it being successful for all players, parents and coaches is that you get feedback from players as whether they want to push for the 1st side or not. Some may be comfortable with being in the 2nd side.

Absolutely, some playas are far better in 2nd team being the strength for the team with their skills and experience. Also what you say is true, but in the case I'm quoting there was never any feedback to playas or parents so the weekly uncertainty for playas but more so for parents not knowing 1 week to the next where they were playing was frustrating.

Logan have the skilled team, what the don't have in height they will have in skill.

Thanks for the compliment, and yes I believe if my boys have their mind in the game they can beat anyone on their day. We lost miserably twice last year in SC and on both occasions we weren't focused for one reason or another. One of those games was the GF against SW (by 41pts). We did lose to them in Classics but cut the margin by 36 points, they only beat us by 5. And if I remember that was with 3 injured players.

Everyone needs to remember basketball isn't always about the individual stars in a team, its the star team that contains the individuals.
And thats what we aim to be.

I still say that is a BIG statement for a team that has not played PL. Losing to SW in GF last season (div 2) when SW lost to BBi 2 in crossovers by 70 is an oman of things to come unless you have 6'6 playas and can run plays automatically as fast as Pat Mills runs.

Just stating facts here mate, all the best for the season anyway. I'd say 6-8th and just making it into PL for your first season should be your teams focus.

Thats true, Redlands should be happy if they make div 1. Besides who do they have? Even if they play great as a team, if they dont have the skill to back it up they wont win.

They are like most other teams in league this coming season- majority top agers this season as last seasons winning team was top age heavy and they have moved up to 18s! So experience will be a prime factor in PL this season and necessary for top placings. Who's left if Jamaal not there?

All we are aiming for is to make the cut at the PL grading, we don't expect to place anywhere in the final washup of the season. I'd like to see my boys gaining the experience neccessary to get a look in for State selection etc. It may not happen this year, but, all experience is going to help them.
We were in the GF and none of my boys were looked at for the U15's squad, so exposure to the PL comp will put them in the faces of team selectors. I am not complaining about the fact, just trying to be proactive to help my players get a look in.

As for those people predicting where we will finish in the season, drop it!
The only expectation I have as a coach is to play the best possible game we can, and as last year proved we made the GF, it was not expected and we didn't even know how many games we would win. I had to re-assess our team goals when we were undefeated after 5 rounds. It was only after we beat who I expected would be the strong teams in the comp that I realised What potential we had. Including beating our first team.

To answer another Question posted, we have retained all but 1 of last years team with a few additions that will strengthen the depth of our team. We are only taking 10 into the season. We have 4 new players including Dylan D (SD) and a few unearthed talents that were right there under our noses at the club. We are looking very good at the moment as we are playing trial games against the U20's teams in our club and having some really hard tight games with them.

So I guess all I want people to know is that we have no expectations and we are just looking foward to the weekend in October to see where we fit in this, as I see it, wide open upcoming season.

Look at last years PL sides and how many bottom agers were running out there in the comp. Logan = 6 B/agers? Northside = 6 B/agers I dont know about BBI, SW, GC (pressume their SC side was mainly top age), RB, Ippy or Maroochy, but to me with that experience NS and Logan will be the 2 teams to beat. It wont be about the U14ers as they already have potential starting fives right away.

Suns will be good; definate top 4 chance, joining Brissy Logan, Wizards. GC will not be a top 4 threat, this season, should make PL but. Not sure of SW, Ippy would be a chance with their U14 champion side, obviously RB, and if you believe Coach B Redlands. Throw in Brissy Silver and never discount SD, that should be the teams with a chance to make PL.

My order of finish in no particular order

Logan

GC

I love how the suns are seldom talked about around these threads...thanks to whoever gave us the wrap.

We are keeping low at the moment still plottin along with 3 sessions a week. most of the b/age kids have returned from last season with 2 (should be 3) training in the "blue Chip" programme as well.

As for Jarad...sure he's a good player but from what i've seen of him...dont think the word "team" has ever enteried that kids head... just from the games i watched him at last seasons classics. he used to go to school with all the boys and they are all good mates, but i think the boys will motor on as per usual (haha staying under the radar....again)

We have a good starting group that will play big minutes but they are all fit enough and can't wait for the season to begin.

Al - we would love a crack at your N/S team soon, maybe in a week or two????

He was so unfairly unlucky to not get chosen over stevie but i spose thats how it works. So has training started at Logan. How many players turning up? Any transfers from Districts, Redlands or SWM. I really think they will struggle a lot more then people think. BBI, Wizards then a huge gap to rest including Redlands.

You are so behind the 8 ball aren't you! Don't you worry about Logan....

Nathan Burrow -the awesome talent from u/14 last season.

"awesome talent u14" does not = awesome talent u16

14s to 16s huge transition for the players. Alot of growing to do in that transition, not just physical, but motor skills, speed and thinking. Been there done that as a parent/coach....bottom age 16s --> top age 16s takes hard work not just from player but from coach too.

BBI number 1 have the best coaching staff in the business. Jon T is great, Lucian is an experienced ABA campaigner and their manager has won 4 state titles coaching and 3 ABA titles. The word on the street is that a certain experienced BBI / Former State coach could be returning to assist in the smoot running of this exciting team.

Anybody wish to guess on who the new '2nd assistant' could be?

lost him to AFL. .

The real threat to b-ball. All age groups seem to lose players to AFL. Look at the past ballers playing top grade afl now. The entire b-ball fraternity need to work together to stem this drain & start early to stop the Marmushes of the world jumping ship.

Early prediction. Based on school and club ball.
PG: Nick Chia, Jarryd Eustace, Ben(Suns).
SG:Jarred(Ipswich), Nick(BBI),
SF:Alex(BBI), Justin(BBI),
PF:Henry(BBI),Stefan(Northside)
C:Big Mitch(BBI), Big James(Suns)

To be honest I couldn't pick a starting 5. i doubt I will have the same 5 week in week out as there is at least 2 players capable of starting in each spot. It will just depend on the opposition, injuries and performance at trainings.

I agree Al. I am not naming the 5 till the game. I have a starting ten and situations will determine who takes the court at the tip off. I have always thought there is about 30 seconds till the first whistle and Sub, so it doesn't matter who is the starting five.
I found some players play better off the bench anyways, they get rid of their nerves on the bench instead of the court. And playing teams like the Suns who are a very physical team I would usually start my toughest players. Bang it up and draw a few fouls. So i don't believe in a starting 5 set at the begining of the season. There are too many variables out there at this level.

Game started pretty quick. Suns got out to 8 -2 lead early. But wizards big proved to be too big and strong all game. 6 points at the half. was close all game maybe got to 10 at one stage.

4th quarter was all wizards. Suns through too many turnovers and wizard ended up winning 72 - 52. scoreline doest really do the game justice, wizards just a lil to strong for us today

Both teams bigs dominated this game. could have been a game of 2 on 2. hahah. Nuh good for both teams to get the cobwebs out. Both sides only had 7 due to Blue chip and other committments so they will play again in the holidays with full teams

Game was a lot closer than the score line suggests. Was a great opportunity for my 2 bigs and reserve point guard to get lots of courtime since my usual starters from last year were away.
