If i recall Titans use to be div 1. Did other div 1 players get similar stats against them when they were in div 1?? probably.. So Merlanos 29pts and 31 rebounds is just as credible.

If the div 2 guys all stink then how come there is a div2 player on the state team

Stupid statement...the kid made the Div 1 Brisbane team and pulled out due to the training commitments. Its not that he is a Dic 2 player....

wow so mature. I've never seen such a judgemental site. He has played some great games, give him credit, don't just put him down. But wait.. if he can't play then why did he make the state team last year?

Hahaha my mum made the state team last year XD so what?!
Waaaaaaaayyyyyyyy too much bias in team selection.

This sort of attitude to tall lads is endemic to SE Queensland (at least) and is a crying shame. Very tall boys are normally "gumby", but if we don't work with them, we're going to miss out on some great players when they grow into their frames.

Not all of them will, of course, but ignoring bigs in favour of "athletes" (read: child athletes) is ill-advised. You can teach handles. You can teach a shot. You can't teach an "athlete" to be 6'11". It seems we learned the lesson of not picking all giants, but gone too far the other way now. It's not like picking the eigth and ninth point guard in a side gives a team something the first seven didn't.

Australian Rules has a good enough juniors program as it is without us gifting them big men, sick of being told basketball is for them, but constantly being shoved to the side because we expect 14-17 year olds the size of men to be able to use it now.

Townsville has 5 state players, 3 starters so from all reports should be favourite easy
Mackay has 3 state players, 1 starter maybe another who could also start
Cairns has 2 state players, only 1 starter

Also Townsville have most of the Under 16 group who finished 2nd in 2008 moving up to 18's so will have a solid bottom age group.

Should be
Townsville
Mackay
Cairns
Mulgrave

They didnt say anything about the gumbies being tall. And please tell me any 6"11 junior athletes around SEQ at the moment? I am struggling too anyway.

Maybe they dont take the "gumby talls" because when they get to a competitive level, they can't handle it. There skills aren't up to it, so when they start getting hammered inside by bigs that can play, they lose the plot.
Possibly?

I have a child who is Tall for his age who wants to learn but gets pushed aside for the SMALLER athletic kids because it all about now and who you know rather then growing towards the future of Australian basketball. Also I would like to point out when picking for positions the kids who are above average should't be looked as Big positions only as on average a guard is 6 foot 4 upwards. Better yet teach our kids all positions because who knows how they will grow.

Just like to point out when M Jordan was in high school did matter how athletic he was he wasn't getting chosen for teams because he wasn't tall enough didn't matter how skilled he was lucky for him he grew. Goes to show how the Americans chose their kids. And thats why they are sucessful.

The average height of basketball players has dropped markedly in the last 10 to 15 years. You can find where all the tall kids went by attending any local Australian Rules Football club.

Your second comment is exactly the kind of attitude I'm talking about. Where do these magical "bigs that can play" come from, if not from "gumby" tall boys who are coached and eventually learn what it is to be that size? I'll tell you the result - they don't come. We don't get "bigs who can play". They're all off playing Australian Rules because of attitudes that say "I don't care if I already have seven point guards, I'll select two more."

Of course all the tall boys won't work out. But none at all will if they keep getting shunted off. They'll go play Australian Rules Football... which actually has a national club in Brisbane.

I note also that someone else has responded with the line of "MJ wasn't tall when he was young, so you're saying he wouldn't have been selected" - This is rubbish. Selecting two gumby bigs instead of the eighth and ninth ball carriers doesn't mean the seven other "athletes" suddenly disappear.

Oh absolutely. That's the idea eventually... but just as you say - coaches seem to want it all "now" and won't put the effort in to add skill and knowledge to a natural gift of shape.

likely a mix of both bottom age and top age players in div 1, div 2 side will be all bottom age in prep for the year after.

mostly the same players coming back to NS, with a few new inclusions from associations both north and south of us.
