yeah NS are a chance to finish 1st on ladder, given the pool situation. which would mean only 2 POD teams might make finals this year.

Ipswich have a couple good recruits> X- sydney kings guard and an 6, 10 import from america who played in WA comp. add these boys to jefferies and stollie starting 5 looking ok. depth on the bench is going to be an issue
Suns have same coach as last year. A very tough bloke - google him He is attempting to rebuild the team and the club culture to his standard. New start for the Club since separating from Caloundra and Noosa. Many new players. Looking to a stronger starting 5 that last year, with a contributing bench. A couple of imports again and Brad Williamson. Coach gets Oz citizenship this year so will be unrestricted. Best player at training. Could he pull on a jersey and take the court? Be great for the Suns if he does.
with the caloundra/caboolture side already having 2 seppo/canadian imports isn't brad then going to be their 3rd restricted player given he avg's abt 20mins in the NBL.... or is there some local player rule in place given he is a sunny coast jr.
also i wouldn't be putting the house on NS having the best record in the League thus reducing the POD to 2 playoffs teams. It's not called the POD for shits and giggles... Mackay and Rocky clearly the front runners but if you have ever played against cairns or followed them you'll know that no matter what they put on the court yr in yr out they will be tough. Same goes with the ville.

i will be banking on bundy to get the wooden spoon in their pool, as the group will certainly win the drinking contest and will have co mvp's in this statistical category.
from what i heard of the last weekend of last year is anything to go on, hope the sponsors dont find about the attitude of those guys, i know if i was the company puttin the amount in that radiology have allegedly put in for the team to go away and get on the drink.

pretty sure bundy will be plenty competitive hanson todd nello plus 2nd import chuck in kiernan and a few of the local boys. depth may be a problem but i'm sure they'll play hard and surprise a few teams along the way

Big guns sign on to Suns (http://www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au/story/2010/03/02/big-gun-signs-on-to-suns/)
The season might be yet to tip off, but already Caboolture can consider itself one up on fierce rival Maroochydore after signing NBL star Brad Williamson for the upcoming QBL season.
The guard confirmed to the Daily yesterday he had agreed to terms with the Suns, who will play all of their home matches at Caboolture this year.
“I definitely am,” Williamson said.
News the Townsville Crocodile will suit up for the Suns will be met with raised eyebrows from the Clippers camp. Williamson, 28, is a former Maroochydore junior and is generally regarded as the franchise’s greatest player, after featuring in the Brisbane Bullets’ 2006-07 NBL championship.

Not sure about the "met with raised eyebrows" quote... Mdore were never going to sign a professional player and if BRad wanted to be close to home this was his only option.

Re: caps squads ...
Women: not many familar names at all, with lauren mcconnell probably the most potent scorer on the team. vdogg will work hard with the girls to mould them into some form of respectability, but will be pushing up hill to better last year's average results
Men: again not many familiar names, tim smith and kurt thompson being the pick of the bunch. biggest challenge will be stopping other teams exploiting them in the paint - looking forward to what daisy can do with the group.

Women have a much improved side and will exceed last years poor record and placing. The names will be familiar by the end of the year. Laureen will be the pg and team organiser, sure she will score but she will also get the bigs the ball and run the show.
Men will battle hard, the club is in a transition year. Great opportunity for some newbies to step up and be counted.

ouch bit harsh considering others are saying Vdogg is a good fit an will get them into some sort of shape to be competitive.. but caps gals were average last season an with two games against Bundy who have no coach an no imports as yet at least they know they have two wins on the board, time will tell i guess with bout 8 weeks till tip off..

NBL-hardened Cedar to build campaign (http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2010/03/04/119795_sport.html)
NBL experience may turn Townsville Heat point guard Chris Cedar into a weapon of destruction in this year's QBL campaign.
Plunged into the pressure cooker of the closest league on record, the 22-year-old acquitted himself well and could dominate the slower-paced QBL competition this year.
''I would hope so, coming from that faster pace in the NBL hopefully he comes back to the ABA and finds it a bit pedestrian,'' coach Mark Wrobel said.
''Because of that we may be able to tear the league up because we're really going to look to him to create and steer the team from the point guard spot and take that lead role.
Meanwhile Michael Cedar may play some role in the Heat's season, but is more likely to be rested after a painful ankle injury restricted him for much of the 2009/10 NBL season.
''There's a hope that further into the season we might be able to get Mick involved with the team once he gets a bit of time around the court,'' Wrobel said.

Schell feels the Heat (http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2010/03/04/119805_sport.html)
THE lure of playing hoops in a new environment and a friendship forged with a local up-and-comer has delivered promising American Calin Schell to the Townsville Heat's doorstep.
The 24-year-old engineering graduate played with David Vanderjagt -brother of former Croc Greg - at the Western Washington University and has elected to follow him back to North Queensland for this year's QBL campaign. Schell was already sounding out Australia as a post-graduate option because his wife Britt, an exercise sports science student, had always wanted to travel down under.
With Vanderjagt to link with the Heat in June, the decision to move was easily made.
The recruitment of Schell has created a daunting front court at the Heat which also includes former Crocs toiler Daniel Egan.
''Our frontline this season - if you look at Calin, Daniel and Matt Rhys - we're going to go 6'6'', 6'7'' and 6'10'' to start off the season,'' coach Mark Wrobel said.
Heat squad: Chris Cedar, Brendon McCully, Tim Keating, Keegan Tudehope, Anthony Ferguson, Rohan Edmonds, David Sleight, Max Murray, Zion Laterre, Tim Duroux, Calin Schell, Daniel Egan, Elliot Tudehope, Matthew Rees, Kirk Newnham, Stephen Pennisi, David Vanderjagt.
guess that answers whoever said Tville will have no-one this year... lookin tough as always possible 1st 5 of C.Cedar, Mcully, Egan, Calin, Rhys with mick to possibly come in half way through season like last year..
just waitin on Rocky to confirm last seppo/import and Cairns to say anything to see how tough POD will be this season...

Rockets gain a star player (http://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/story/2010/03/05/rockets-gain-a-star-player/)
PENI Nasalo has only been in Rockhampton for four days and already he’s hoping to make an impression on the home fans.
“Throw in Ryan McDade, Michael Kingma, Glenn Scott and Paull Scott into the mix and we have the nucleus of a competitive basketball team.”
Nasalo had his first training session on Wednesday night, and while he had not met a few of his new team-mates, he said things were looking positive.
“I had my first training last night and we went through some fitness, and had an hour just running around with some of the young boys – a few of the development guys,” he said.

Heard he wasn't a month ago?
I think you will find Thalo went overseas and is not not able to naturalise for another 2 years. Not sure he ever will.
i thought Big Paully Scott had retired again after last season although Rocky would be crazy to not at least try convince him to play... wonder if Peni will play last D league comp next weekend???
with both parties having the reputations of having the odd argument already if Thalo is going to Coastal i'm putting $50 on in team fireworks before June...

Agreed, this bloke Ipswich have picked up will have is way i the QBL. He is looking to impress to get a NBL contract which is a given when you see what he will do to the other guards. Can shoot the shit out of it and get to the rim as well. Nice pick up. Combine him with Corey Easley 6'9 forward ipswich will be very competitive. About time.

Power coach aims for play-offs (http://www.gladstoneobserver.com.au/story/2010/03/06/power-coach-smith-aims-to-make-the-play-offs/)
MEN’S Port City Power player-coach Blair Smith is looking to new heights for the 2010 season.
The squad is almost complete with the addition of new recruits – Derrick McDonald (Melbourne), Keith Borgan (Denmark) and Ryley Buntain (Noosa) – all of whom would be training with the squad by Wednesday.
“We’ll have everybody bar Anthoney Esparza by next week,” Smith said.
The QBL season does not get underway until April 3 this year, so Esparza will still arrive in Gladstone two to three weeks before the first bounce.
“We definitely want to make the play-offs,” he said.
The Power finished ninth last year.

think bundy will be in the finals this yr, and have a better record than gladdy.
bundy will go 6 and 2 in their pool, and should get ipswich, goldy and twba from pool of ease giving them at least 9 wins. then get gladstone, and maybe a win over a different marlins team and a possible win over tville on the road. that would make 12 wins.
that should be good enough to get them second in the pool unless they can knock off the wizards which could happen with their starting lineup.
and with the amount of cash apparently being plowed into the program they should be in the top 4 only thing that stands in their way is northsides team.
bulls def top 8 and should be top 4.

I have no idea where you got all this info about bundy from, but there is no way in the world they are a top 4 team, yes i do rate hanson and todd when he's on, but they have no bench at all and nello never hit the court for cairns while he was up there and will really need to work hard to get back to where he was for bundy back in the southern cross days, i do reckon them and suns will battle it out for 2nd in central pool, but never count out caps either, there team may not look super on paper, but they are a legit program and have been for many years,
No way of bundy being top 4 in the league.

Your kidding yourself. Bundy will get flogged all year. As for the pool of ease even toowoomba will go close to beating bundy. NO one has heard anything about who is lining up for the gold coast and Ipswich will cane bundy as their side is looking not bad with
1. Luke cann
2. Zarryon Fereti

Quite funny. Either someone's having a pull of all our legs, or they are absolutely overly optimistic. Hanson is a gun, but with the team Bundy has put together, they will go no better than last year. Pencil in Ws against Maroochy and that's about all they can bank on. No way will they beat out Coastal for the second seed in their pool.
I see one or two people talking up Ippy. They have improved slightly, but they need more before they can start talking themselves up too. South West are improved on last season, and Gold Coast won't be a walkover.
having names on paper is good but the coaching part is very important and now with 40 min games there is no time for error.
Bundy have an inexpereinced coach but I am sure they will give there all for him but it makes it difficult when coaches are close friends with players.
Coastal coach I thought had trouble last year controlling some of his players they were arguing and not all on the same page. And some one saying player coach.... player coach is very hard to make work, need experienced players and well drilled at training.
Ipswich...... well that was a mess last year, effort was not there and it seemed no one wanted to play for each other but lets hope that changes.
South west have gone away from the player coach which I think that will only make them better and there rotation looks good.
Full rosters are not out so its hard to say who will beat who but the season is looking really competative bar the big 3! (mackay, Rocky and Northside)

Bar the big 3? .... Did you forget to mention the State Champions from last year?
haha yea i think someone is definitely pulling our legs in their support of Bundy or was a little drunk when they posted :)
i'm with Crack on the Power article what do you expect Blair to say we think we are going to lose most of our games but we will have a great time after the game if bundy can talk up their chances then we are definitely goin to say we will win a few games that others may not think we will...
biggest improvers imho in South are SW they added more depth an a good coach to let JC just play..
ippy are looking better but lets be honest after last season that isn't hard you would hope new coach with a few more new horses means new attitude an then they might get another W or two tho
someone mentioned Neers would beat Bundy if they get a good big import they definitely have the shooters to support him but if they are going full local again i dont see them losing that spoon unless GC really do have no-one but i doubt that ...
i do think that Bundy might be a chance against Suns but that is only a chance because Hanson is capable of massive numbers Nello an his boy will be consistent an Todd n Kyle have the possibility of hitting some shots every now an again be interesting to see how the in team politics go this season in both Suns an Bulls...

Haven't been on here for a long time and found some quite interesting opinions so thought I'd drop in and give my 2 cents. ( I refer to the euro cent Nagas so it's ok)
- The bundy thing is just funny. They'll win 4 or 5 games IMO.
- Wizards will again be tough but when you look at it they've just replaced TC with Bubbles so they the same team that didn't get it done last year basically...
- Coastal may be tough as hell and could win their pool with Brad, Thalo and the coach who I hear is a player. No idea what else they got though but that alone makes them very sharp.
- Mackay are HUGE favourites. Rhys, TC, Fitz, Blanchfield and some good role players around them, teams like Rocky trying to load up but Mackay miles ahead right now.
- Rocky's team on paper looks good but unlike pretty much every team in the league they are totally built for the half court. Good luck trying to get up n down against good teams that wanna run...
- South West added Broom and a coach, let's not go nuts. Favourites to win the pool of eternal life but wouldn't say much beyond that...

Bundy and Neers for the Wooden Spoon this season. Cant believe Bundy talking themselves up this early.
Hope they can prove me wrong, Curran with no experience will struggle.

yea that's nasty, having a win loss record of 1-5 maybe 0-6 at the start of the season isn't going to be good for team chemistry with the potential time bombs they have...
lucky for them they only have to play tvl, cns, rky, mky once unlike a great team i know of...

Port City Power beats Rocky, Bundy (http://www.gladstoneobserver.com.au/story/2010/03/15/port-city-power-beats-rocky-bundy-teams-in-qbl-pre/)
MEN’S Port City Power basketball team won both their final round Development League games on the weekend as they prepare for the start of the QBL season.
The Gladstone team lost both games in round one, before they beat Bundaberg in the second and finally claimed two wins in the third and final round.
Port City player-coach Blair Smith was confident as the team heads towards the season’s start on April 24.
New recruits Derrick McDonald and Riley Buntain impressed Smith during the weekend’s Development League games.
“He showed his extreme athleticism and was silky smooth,” the coach said about McDonald.
American import Keith Borgan arrived in Gladstone on Wednesday and jumped straight into training in the afternoon.
“He’s going to be very good for us,” Smith said after seeing him on the court.
The club will contest a tournament in Rockhampton the week before the start of the season.
I'll say 3-3.
At best.
you are dreaming brad's good but with the horses they have i'm not sure he's enough to get them over any POD teams..
d league on wend Gladdy beat both by under 10 an rocky won by similar margin vs bundy...
peni didnt play for rocky, llyody looks like he's lost some weight since last year and Hanson is going to have to help bring ball up cos Myerding an Kyle are goin to be buggered if they have to do it all game every game...

But what about CJ Kennedy lmao.
Seriously this is why Aaron Wade must make the final squad. He is the most legit ball handler/point in the Bundy area.
Realistically with Lloyd/Hanson/Nello Bundy should have gone for an American point guard.

IT is basketball’s version of Twenty20 cricket and two Gladstone players were invited to participate in the national competition.
Port City Power players Keith Borgan and Anthony Esparza have been invited to take part in the High Stakes Hoops competition that features unique alterations to the traditional format of the game.
Both Gladstone players, originally from America, would take to the court as part of former national basketballer Patrick Reidy’s team the Rays.

gladstone have 4 wnbl players in hurst, bibby, haynes and rose. add to that diana neeves returning from college and they will be faves for the title this year.
swest have added heidi freeburn who played in bundy for the past 2 seasons and also georgia woodyard rumoured to be returning to qld and playing there.
havent heard anything bout mackay and tville, rocky have bishop returning with another canberra capitals dev player going with her.
coastal suns have reloaded too with some interstate players
just a little info ive heard, sorry couldnt give you anymore will be interesting to see how brisbane go this year with a first time womens coach and no big names

After watching a bit of Bundy, Gladstone and Rocky on Saturday, I can say Jared Kiernan has a way higher ceiling then Kyle and if he capitalises on his talent I can see him being a very good QABL player.
The kid is only 15 and looked like the most skilled Bundy player on the court.
Aaron Wade surprised me, he is no longer a star clearly, but will be a more than adequete back up point guard, which is something Bundy has always lacked.
Kyle was decent too.
Jenkins is nothing more than a 9th or 10th man really. I hope Bundy doesn't think he is good enough to play substantial minutes this season.
The rest of the team was not up to QABL standard really. CJ Kennedy did nothing to impress me, Faulkner was rubbish just like in the 08 season and the rest of them were barely noticeable.
This is all chatter. He was the most unconventional player on the court. Bundy has had a player or two that usually shines more than others in their age group but it has slowed to a trickle. I don't think Jared is close to the previous bunch (Macdermott followed by Wallis followed by the Bergen twins). That said he can prove himself this year if he has a good season. The other kids were state level and I don't think he is quite there yet. I totally agree on Jenkins. Had he concentrated on basketball instead of booze and smokes when he finished his junior stint he would be a major compontent in this side. Aaron should have stayed retired and I expect him to be last off the bench. I think Bundy might have a chance to scrape into playoffs by the skin of their teeth.

I wish people would stop talking about bundy as a semi final chance. Lock them in a room with a good mag or photo from fev and they would still struggle to beat themselves.

Meteorettes sign star (http://www.dailymercury.com.au/story/2010/03/25/meteorettes-sign-elite-us-college-star/)
Rachel Allison, 23, a 186 cm (6ft 1in) forward who played for Baylor University in Texas, is expected in Mackay in the next few weeks as the Meteorettes build to the opening match of the season on April 24, away to Cairns.
She is a former co-captain of the Baylor Lady Bears and scored well over 1000 points for her college career and averaged more than seven rebounds a game.
The Meteorettes are still in the hunt to sign a point guard before the season starts.

Suns import issues warning to QBL rivals (http://caboolture-shire-herald.whereilive.com.au/sport/story/suns-import-issues-warning-to-qbl-rivals/)
THE Caboolture Suns will play up-tempo basketball in an effort to unseat taller rivals this year.
That is the tip from NBL import Thalo Green, who has settled in to training with the local Queensland Basketball League outfit.
Fellow import Brad Williamson, signed after a stellar season with the Townsville Crocodiles, starts training this week ahead of the season opener at home to Bundaberg on April 24.
Green said he had been impressed with what he had seen at the club.
"(Coach) Mike (Ayanbadejo) runs a tight ship and it is enjoyable to play for him,’’ he said.
"I think it is good, it is a dedicated group of guys, a few new faces from what we have had in the past.’’
Green warned opposing teams would have to change their game plan to adjust to the Suns, rather than the other way around.
"We are going to be a small team so we are going to have to be in excellent shape,’’ he said.
"It makes teams change to suit us.’’
B-Rad + Thalo = 2 excellent buys for the Suns, and a great improvement on the two imports they had last season. Who will play the supporting roles?

1 catch with those guys on the same squad...there is only 1 bball...
B-Rad + Thalo = 2 excellent buys for the Suns, and a great improvement on the two imports they had last season. Who will play the supporting roles?
Great question Mr. Ben. I do know that they have Big Andrew Latimer, who has transfered from BBI, and he is BIG. Is Rocky O'Neil still there? Brent Andrews is a Suns boy, and after that I struggle to come up with any names.
They will certainly be able to score some points with Thalo and Brad, but they got to get it over half way and then there is the Defensive side of the game to contend with. I hear nothing but good reports on their coach, Mike A, he will have to bring it all to the table to get this group to gel and compete.
Agree with your sentiments about these 2 imports being an up grade on last years. Good to also see 2 former QBL MVP's back in the league, well done to all at the Suns for getting that done.

Cedar re-signs and promises 'no injuries' (http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2010/03/27/125935_sport.html)
The sharp-shooting guard yesterday inked a deal with the Townsville NBL club that will see him remain in the city until the end of the 2011/12 season.
Cedar will enjoy a well-earned off-season to eliminate his injuries.
It will be the first time in a long time the 23-year-old takes a break after numerous back-to-back seasons with the Crocs and QBL team the Townsville Heat.
''Even though I'm only a young guy, only 23, I think it's still time to have a rest, and after a month or so you get that passion back and you just want to start playing again. So that will be good for me, have that time off to rest my ankle, and then get that passion to want to start playing again.''

South West look very strong, plenty of quick and skilled guards, some good size inside also. Ipswich surprised somewhat with OT game v SW first up, M/dore, Bris pretty ordinary. New rims and backboards on all Ipswich courts have spruced the place up a bit.

I agree with your sentiments somewhat - the lack of information being provided is an absolutely poor representation of the league. Clubs must be wondering where all their clams are going for 'administration'.
Have a look at the SEABL and Big V sites - they have their shit together.
BQ have been hiding behind the 'understaffed/overtasked' excuse for way too long - time to pull their finger out and start getting things up to scratch. One editorial from a league coach ain't gonna cut it sorry!

never really understood why the clubs let this go on. they have been paying for a full time admin person when we all know he was only working on qbl stuff for 4 months a year.
also wonder why nobody has caught unto the fact that the qbl entry fees never decreased after we dropped out of the aba and no longer send teams to the acc.
hopefully someone will aks questions at the upcomming agm.
even though a few Attendees of the AGM are readers even members of BD dont hold your breath buddy,...
although under the agreed outcomes "discussion of The line item 'BQ Admin Fee' within the budget will be referred to the BQ Board to look into." (2009 AGM)
it's interesting this was listed at point number 4 they have more important things to worry about like "Further explore policy in relation to comments made within 'social media' and the link to code of conduct & tribunals" (2009 AGM) which was the top of the list at number 1...
so does this mean our attendees care more about what someone says on BD or facebook etc more then they care about saving their associations money or getting value for the money they are paying out for a full time admin every year???
i know Power have taken our pretty pics and written up our profiles to put up the site an i'm looking forward to seeing how this years pics turned out :)

Um...yeh, you got it in one mate. Heard Bunnings have invented some new "super broom" that they want road tested. Apparently the BQ offices are to be the test site. Due for delivery the Monday after the AGM.
Try Zarryon Fereti.....

Other QBL players are Trigger @ 9 points, Brad williamson @ 7, Rhys martin @ 6, Coenhrad @ 6, chris goulding @ 6, cedar and toovey @ 6, Grabua @ 5, Kerry williams @ 4, Dwayne Vale @ 3. If that will some how indicate how he compairs to these players.

South West will easily be the best southern team and will be up there at the end of the season, similar group to what they have had the past 2 years when they have lost the final.
Gladstone is easily the team to beat by a long way.
I'm sorry to say that I cant see Brisbane being much higher than the bottom 2 or 3. If they finished that low last year with a proven women's coach I can't see V-Dogg taking them much higher.

Northside had both those players and more last season and they even lost to a woeful Brisbane and finished well out of the playoff race. IMO Northside will struggle to even make the playoffs, just like last year.
So Purcell is on loan to SD in SEABL?
Gladstone well above the rest in the state and the north. You can never count out T'Ville, Rocky big spenders as usual, will be around the mark. McKay reportedly not as tuff as last season but they are always competitive in the ladies.
SWM clearly the best in the South, followed by Caboulture, then it is a dog fight.

I agree, Dusty won't play for sure. Darnell Mee? Who wants that old guy in your team! Yeah he brings experience, but he has old legs and won't even get through a season.

Tovey retires at 24 (http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2010/04/05/127925_sport.html)
Tovey last week gave the Townsville NBL club the shock news that, at just 24 years old, he was retiring from the sport.
It was not a decision made rashly, but with his long-term financial future at the forefront of his mind, he has accepted a position as an accountant with worldwide firm KPMG in Perth.
Meanwhile, he denied Kelvin Robertson and Brad Williamson had been released from the club, although admitted they had been informed they were free to test themselves on the market.
But Smythe did not rule out retaining the pair, particularly local boy Robertson, who is coming back from his second knee reconstruction in as many seasons.
''If Kelvin recovers fully and is ready to play then I think he'll continue his career at the Crocodiles,'' he said.
''Kelvin just needs to concentrate on his rehab and get that done.''
Rhys Martin and Tim Coenradd resign with the hawks, they can focus on winning this season rather the trying to get numbers and get jobs! this will help Mackay I think as they may only need 1 ball on the court.
also Grabua and Dusty resign with the Taipans.
Wouldn't be suprised to see Brad hook up with Joey at the Blaze.

Just read on Cairns.com.au that Matt Smith former Taipan will be returning to the Marlins this year after a year in SEABL no Grauba or Ro Gray....
Cairns Taipans link works for Marlins

THE connection between elite levels of basketball in the Far North will continue with Taipans assistant Mick Downer's appointment as coach of the Cairns Marlins.
Downer joins Mark Beecroft and Aaron Fearne as Marlins coaches to have had a link with the Taipans, with Beecroft and Downer having translated their success at Queensland Basketball League level into senior positions with the Taipans.
The team itself has been a breeding ground for the Taipans, with many players coming through the Marlins’ ranks to join the NBL.
The Marlins have their first hitout at the North Queensland Games at the weekend but will be without stalwarts Aaron Grabau and Rowan Gray, who are not playing this season.
But with former Taipan Matt Smith to make a return to the state league and several youngsters set to graduate from the Super League ranks, the Marlins are likely to be among the competition front-runners again.
Cairns Basketball general manager Mike Scott said the link between the clubs had been a "critical component" of the Marlins’ success over the past 10 years.
"Mick’s appointment continues the co-operation which has enabled the Cairns Bartercard Marlins to be the most successful team in Australia at this level," he said.
Downer returned to Cairns from Perth last year where he had headed up the West Australian Institute of Sport basketball program as well as being an assistant coach with the Perth Wildcats.
The former Cairns Basketball administrator became part of Aaron Fearne’s coaching team at the Taipans and took over the successful Taipans Academy program.
"It is privilege to be appointed to coach the most successful team in the QBL and to follow both Mark Beecroft and Aaron Fearne as the coach of the Marlins," Downer said.

Former NBA hopeful joins Force (http://www.qt.com.au/story/2010/04/06/ipswich-recruit-target-for-nbl/)
IPSWICH Force has completed a major recruiting coup, signing a former NBA prospect as their point guard for this season.
But its unlikely Zarryon Fereti will remain with the Force beyond this year as he has attracted the interest of NBL scouts.
Fereti, from Terrigal in northern NSW, had an injury-plagued 18 months after he badly damaged his elbow playing in Germany’s professional basketball league.
Fereti was a college basketball star for New York Division 1 school St Bonaventure University.
He attended the NBA summer camp in Las Vegas in 2008, a sporting camp where the world’s basketball prospects are put through their paces by NBA teams to find out who is good enough to play in the league.
Fereti joins American power forward Corey Easley as the team’s two new stars this season.

Nancarrow returns to coach Cairns Dolphins (http://www.cairns.com.au/article/2010/04/07/104281_local-sport-news.html)
THE Cairns Dolphins have received a boost on the eve of the Queensland Basketball League season with the reappointment of coach Val Nancarrow and return of several top line players.
The Dolphins fielded an inexperienced team last year but will be bolstered by the return of Pedro, McMeeken-Ruscoe and Melissa Downer.
In a further boost to the team, former Australian player Jenny Evans, a teammate of Nancarrow’s at the AIS, will join the Dolphins as an assistant coach.

Baylor star to guide Meteorettes (http://www.dailymercury.com.au/story/2010/04/08/baylor-star-to-guide-young-meteorettes/)
THE Mackay Meteorettes’ new American recruit arrived in town yesterday, ready to lead the team through the season.
The 186cm (6ft 1 ins) guard/forward said she hadn’t had a chance since arriving to speak to Global Products Search Meteorettes coach Wade Rebetzke about her role with the Meteorettes.
“I know that I’ve come in here to provide leadership because I know the girls are young,” she said.

Heat left short before QBL season even starts (http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2010/04/08/128705_sport.html)
American import Calin Schell made Townsville home long enough to get those around him excited by what he could bring to the club. But the promising 204cm forward was forced to leave prematurely for family reasons, returning to the United States with wife Britt late last month.
Schell's departure is an undeniable setback for the Heat which last season had the likes of Townsville Crocodiles Cameron Tovey and Anthony Susnjara on the roster. The only big off-season recruit who will be on show in this weekend's North Queensland Games pre-season showdown with the Cairns Marlins in the Far North will be former Croc Daniel Egan.
Despite the glaring hole left in the roster, there hasn't been a sign of panic in the Heat camp with a leadership core of Tim Duroux, Brendon McCully and Matthew Rees setting the tone in pre-season training, and Chris Cedar coming back from an impressive late season stint with the Crocs refreshed for state duties. Co-captain Duroux happily accepts the responsibility of stepping up as he enters his ninth QBL season.
''Kirk (Newnham) has hit the gym hard this year and Keegan Tudehope is really looking like he is out there to make this his year,'' he said.

Marlins pushed for size (http://www.cairns.com.au/article/2010/04/09/104791_local-sport-news.html)
A BACK injury has forced former Taipans centre Matt Smith out of tomorrow night's North Queensland Games basketball clash against Townsville.
With Rowan Gray sitting out the Marlins season to concentrate on full-time studies, Smith was to have made his comeback.
"His motivation’s there, it was just probably a bit too much too soon that he pushed himself and he broke down.
"We hope to see him back but it won’t be in the the near future, it’ll take a little bit."
Gray’s departure and Smith’s injury leaves Jeromie Hill, newcomer Josh Wood and another former Taipan, Dean Brebner, to fill the front-court void.Gray’s departure and Smith’s injury leaves Jeromie Hill, newcomer Josh Wood and another former Taipan, Dean Brebner, to fill the front-court void.
The Marlins have experienced a changing of the guard with Taipans coach Aaron Fearne stepping down from the top job and ABA stalwart Aaron Grabau taking a full NBL off-season.
But a strong core remains including Curt Ahwang, Deba George, James Comino, Dwayne Vale and Michael Chitham.

Ouch, Rocky needs to find a import an fast, i doubt they will find one as good as Bishop this close to season be a shame to not see her playing this year.. that also means Rocky's two hottest players wont be playing this season so i'm calling them to drop to number 10-11 in the looks rankings and bottom of POD as well...

HAHA gota love the most likely drunk hating i'm obviously bias but i think even just adding Boags n Spider with locals we would get a few wins down south definintely beat Clips and neers at least as for the north well we'v only ever beat Mackay so far so losing to them would be nothing new..
but with our star recruits i gota good feeling this year and with Cairns an Tville being the weakest they have ever been in recent memory i'll obviously be putting a brass razoo or two on us this season...
I know the camera adds a few extra pounds but what is doing Daisey at high stakes hoops
Can't say for sure, but probs trying to get the $$$, and also keeping his coaching credentials in the frame ... after all a spot will be available if the Bullets get back in (eventually).
well since iv been stricken down with water-arse virus i now have plenty of time for facebook redtube an bendoes so while im here i thought i would take a shot at some teams 1st 5 an how i think they will go.. as the website isn't fully updated i have guessed for a few teams...
Marlins starting with Curt Ahwag, Deba, Vale, Brebner an New guy Josh Woods still a good team but doesn't strike the fear of past years teams be interesting to see how they go but i dont think they will be top 3 in POD..
Heat; Cedar, Mccully, Duroux, Egan, Rees these guys are going to need Egan to have a big year but he's more then capable an they have a enough support to trouble or beat anyone..
Mackay; Rhys, Fitz, Toddy, Coenradd n Barlow easily the toughest team to defend with 4 players capable of averaging 20+ King may have finally bought his championship team...
Rocky; Peni, Scott, Reggie, Mcdade n Kingma prob the 2nd toughest team to guard but definitely mission impossible tryin to get an offensive rebound.. only weakness is their back court but it probably only seems that way cos they have the best front court in the recent memory...
Power; Keith, Dmac j, Dale, Esparza n Blair with prob the quickest back court in the L should be another good year for the boys with hopefully a few more wins...
Bulls; Myerding, Kyle, Matt, Nello n Shackles it's all about leadership this year when times are good they'll be loving life but if they hit a rough patch a young coach who is everyones best mate isn't best combo when you need to crack down so time will tell but i think they have a good chance of makin semis...
Suns; Mcglynn, Brad W, Andrews, Thalo n Parry when these guys are on they will trouble everyone not much depth tho an there is a big possibility of high explosives with the egos there but if NS take no1 spot they'll def be in Semi's...
Clips; Zane, Isiah, Goff, Coby n Canadian made this 1st 5 up but after seeing them in action at Aus Day carnival they will annoy teams but not so much trouble many as most teams know what to expect from them now...
Wiz; JD, Shane, Bubbles, Lucien n Trigg probably top of the south an with our brilliant pool systems maybe even top of state although they have chocked last few seasons so time will tell...
Caps; they only had 6 guys on qbl site and i heard Jason (seppo) was playin for them which will give them a boost but its a rebuilding year an the wins column will reflect that...
Ippy; Ferriti, Cann, Ryan, Stolle n Uberlang heard they had a 2nd import coming either way Ippy should do better then last year well maybe...
Neers; looks like more of the same for the boys up the mountain this season...
SW; Nate, Teys, Ammar, JC, Broome not sure if this is how they will start but il put money on Tommy having a big season this year an these guys are most likely to challenge Wiz for top of the south an will win the pool of ease with ease...
GC ; Adam, Gurney an no real idea who else but they'l be fightin Ippy for 2nd spot
obviously these starters could be completely wrong but facts aren't always my strong point when posting and im sure your used to that...

Gutsy Heat score NQ gold (http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2010/04/13/129975_sport.html)
THE Heat, but not as you know them, scored a gutsy Queensland Basketball League (QBL) win over arch rivals Cairns at the weekend.
Employing a iron-fisted brand of defence, the Townsville side raided the Bendigo Bank Basketball Centre to claim North Queensland Games gold with a 78-64 victory on Saturday.
The combination of Brendon McCully hustle and Tim Duroux leadership not only kept the dynamic Marlins offence, led by Deba George, to 64 points, but starved Cairns of all scoring opportunities in the third quarter - giving up only five points.
Townsville claimed the NQ Games golden double with the Flames trouncing the Naomi Pedro-led Cairns Dolphins.

This team may be young and relatively inexperienced but one thing is for sure they will be uptempo and athletic. alot of these guys have been running around in the FNQ Superleague joel has been emailing me results for the last 2 months. I think they will get townsville back in the season proper.

Marlins: Current roster doesn't look good enough to have a serious shot of winning. After reading the article RE: bringing Kerry in at the back end of the season I wouldn't be surprised if Cairns take further steps to rectify that before seasons end.
Heat: Will be solid but probably just scrape into the playoffs followed by an early exit at best.
Mackay: Got plenty of names and will be capable of beating anybody on any given night. Balance doesn't look good to me. Look too heavy on perimeter oriented scorers. Only 1 guy (ok 2 if you count the assist) can contribute offensively at any moment, where all players contribute to defense, rebounding, etc.
Rocky: Not as deep as previous years but I think have recruited very smartly. Good size in all positions, have the makings of a very good defensive team, have 2 of the best inside targets in the L. Injuries permitting they will be in the GF.
Power: Getting more respectable every year and may rival the Heat/Marlins this year. That said, I expect the "POD is too hard" whinging from Nagas to continue for at least 1 more year.
Bulls: Competitive in the South but not championship material.
Suns: Competitive in the South but not championship material.
Clips: Meh...
Wiz: Loss of Trigger = loss of title hopes (which were probably fairly slim anyhow given previous years efforts with some good talent on their roster)
Caps: Rebuilding? Won't be a laughing stock.
Ippy: Meh...
Neers: Meh...
SW: Competitive in the South but not championship material.
GC: Who do they have?

Rockets sign up American import (http://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/story/2010/04/15/reggies-signing-boost-rockets-american-talent/)
THE Rockhampton Stadium Nightclub Rockets are set to stir up the 2010 season after star American import Reggie Golson signed up for another campaign.
The star player will add his power and strength to an already impressive Rockets line-up of Peni Nasalo, Glenn Scott, Paul Scott, Michael Kingma and Tony Campbell.
“I look forward to having everybody arrive so we can gel the team together quickly.”
Golson will be one of a number of leading players who won’t be making an appearance in this weekend’s Motel 98 QBL Pre-Season Blitz.
Mackay: Got plenty of names and will be capable of beating anybody on any given night. Balance doesn't look good to me. Look too heavy on perimeter oriented scorers. i'm guessing your a rocky fan? i could be wrong but your the only who has said something doesn't look good about them an Rocky fans dont tend to like Mackay more then most..
sure they only have Barlow as an inside target but when you 1st 5 is nearly all NBL an 6'2, 6'3, 6'7, 6' 7, 6'9 and their 6th man is 6'5 i'm not saying they aren't beatable but i'm sure they will be able to work something out on offense an defense to adjust to not having a good balance..
in regards to the GF i would take that bet against you of Mackay not Rocky definitely being in..
last few years Rocky have made the GF they have had someone to take control like Benny T who then taught Rhys for the following year as good as Peni is time will tell if he can control the game like those guys did...
be interesting to see if there is any Wookie fireworks this year too :)
also got the CQ preseason blitz on this weekend Bundy, Glady, Rocky an Mkay..
should be interesting to see how good Mackay are after a week or two of training at full strength..
Rocky will only have Peni an locals maybe Wookie no Reggie, Mcdade or Pauly
Bundy to the best of limited knowledge will have Matt an locals but no Shackles or Nello..
Us to most likely have everyone as well..
not to sure where they are getting the refs from but it will be a big ask for everyone involved with both men an women playin consecutively and both having 3 games in 4-5 hours which will be tough even with a running clock...

Results from CQ blitz -
Power beat Mackay by 4. Rhys still great even with injured hand. Power too good inside.
Rocky scrape home by 1 over Power. Power lead all game and had it taken away.
Bulls beat Rocky by 3 without Hanson for last qtr and Lloyd going off hurt. Todd magnificant.
Good hitout by all teams.
Are the Bulls looking good or what !
PS And Power women lose to Mackay.

You must have been watching the games from a different angle to me???
Just watching the rotations of the teams it seemed to me that no team really wanted to show all there aces. Except Bandy. They looked as though went for the gold but got bronze!
What Mackay did to Rocky was done with 3 starters on at a time and then the young kids.
Rocky still has 4 players to come in to that team could be their excuse.
In saying that, the Rocky team gave Power an embarrassing loss. After plenty of high fives and fist pumping and being up a fair bit early they lost the game. With a running clock!
Makay was the only team that had intensity on D and looked like they are at the level needed to threaten for a title.
No one played above the ring (Hanson maybe in bits against smaller players) except a couple of dunks here and there. But nothing on the imports that are to come in to the Rocky team.
Anyway, not much could be taken away by any teams but to blow a few cobwebs out for the real deal next week.
Womens games. Ahhhh. Not that exciting. Was a good chance to have a bite to eat and catch up with people while they played and men rested.
So did Mackay beat Rocky?
Mackay - full strength from what I know
Rocky - Peni and glenn scott only starters to play
Gladstone - full strength
Bundy- 2 starters
Mackay beat bundy and rocky by 20+
Bundy beat rocky
Gladstone beat Bundy and Mackay
Rocky beat Gladstone
Different match ups and different tempo of games and also 3 games in 5 hours do effect the results. Cant really take to much from the games but a good hit out for all teams and I am sure all teams will get much better and have more plays and different defensive set ups.
Mackay vs Gladstone was a physical game and the match ups were good, last game of the day so the press from mackay was not as effective from them being tired. Of course a bit of pushing and smack talk from both teams made for a great game. only 4 points in it.

things must look different when you wear a rocky shirt cos i saw a few things you could take out of the day???
although you did get the embarrassing loss bit right not to sure what a running clock has to do with it, was tough to be motivated for that game an TC goin 7 or 8 from the new arc was impressive good signs for when they get the big guys to draw the help D.. as for playin above the hoop i think we agree that there wont be anyone that can beat Rocky inside in saying that you have to be able to get the ball down the court for them to get the ball inside considering Peni is your only Pg and 1 of 3 guards you have that will play minutes makes it interesting if he is going to last 40 mins full stop clock! even tougher on double headers .. big possibility that the smart smaller teams are going to full court press Rocky this year...
i think getting beaten by Gladdy was the best thing to happen to Mackay although it was the only the 3rd game of a lit preseason tournament which doesnt count for anything... the mid game fireworks and the end score = a great atmosphere for the next game when we play them and something for Coach King to remind them of if they need an extra motivation to train hard this week and work more on their team offence before the first game this weekend...
as for the women maybe you missed the early contender for Hottest chick in th QBL Rachel Allison no14 for Mackay she was definitely worth whatever ridiculous price Rocky charged to get in...

Caboolture Suns prepare for QBL opener (http://northern-times.whereilive.com.au/sport/story/caboolture-suns-prepare-for-qbl-opener/)
THE Caboolture Suns men’s basketball side showed off several new recruits in Sunday’s final trial match against Ipswich.
Former Townsville Crocodiles and Brisbane Bullets player Brad Williamson played his first competitive match for the Suns, as did another former NBL player Andrew Latimer.
Latimer, however, suffered a knee injury which has him in doubt for this Saturday night’s opening QBL fixture against Bundaberg at the Morayfield Leisure Centre.
The Suns also lost the trial against Ipswich by 20 points.

worthwhile to note that Llyod went off with 2 minutes left in the last with what seemed a dislocated shoulder. he did however come back on about 30 secs later after appearing to use his teammates help to put his shoulder back in place and completed the game on the court.. As a rocky fan I thought that was impressive. The American looked ok on the bench. Todd played well as did a couple of their younger players.
I'm not sure if I was the only one that noticed but what their import went out in the 3rd and Bundaberb were down by double figures it seemed like Llyod decided to stepped up and I never knew how good his defense was and he was definately the difference in the end and I just hope he realizes that he might be one of the most important 6th man in the comp with 2 big man imports to come in..especially with reduced time. but knowing him I guess it's up to him! But congrats to bundy and the victory with 3 starters not playing (Kyle keirnan injured)
From a rocky standpoint I'm not worried at all we virtually had our D league team and a lot of those guys won't see any time. Would like to see how peni will play this season. Go rocky!!

heard on the grapevine that rocky are struggling for players - Kingma is lost in Europe, Mcdade won't be available for up to a month due to immigration.... Looks like they'll be dropping they're first 3 games to POD rivals

wookie will be here in time and i think Rocky is professional enough to have this sorted out in the 3 weeks they have until their 1st game well they would hope so cos their 1st 2 games are against two of the top teams in the comp :D
cam t will be playing, have not said how long for as Mcdade caught up with finals in Finland. could play Mackay at home, gladdy away and Townsville home.
up in rocky today he was.
