No Todd Blanchfield? He was there this year, with 2 years left, I thought he was a given.

What's with Cameron Bairstow? That's an interesting call. Hasn't really done anything since making the south side as 9th or 10th man. Good on him though.

Is the AIS a 2 or 3 year thing? Harris-trunks, Young, Page and Christian are into their 3rd year when other prospects like Radcliffe left after 2?

what happened to Blanchfield. Did he get dropped or quit or what?

Blanch left because he was homesick, would have been there next year if he wanted. Radcliffe left for the same reason. Depending on what age you go in you can be there 2 or 3 years. 19 is the cut off age and when the boys leave.

Yeh. Wonder why they havent won anything recently though? Got some great players and plenty to choose from. Biggest association in Queensland and all. Looks like this is their year.

Damon heuir would have to be feeling pretty unlucky.

damon is easily good enough on my opinion to make the AIS, maybe his just not what the coaches are looking for.

I reckon Brisbane would be one of the first associations to admit they have had some average seasons with their u18s over the last few years.

2006 - 7th, with what many thought was a very competent team
2007 - Runners Up to SW metro at classics after winning PL. That team had Brock and an 'emerging' Bairstow
2008 - 7th, however missed Wroe and McCarron for first half of the tournament and Hodgeson didn't play at all due to injury which was a huge loss. Maroochy though played great ball all year.
2009 - Only time will tell but again will lose a great player in Wroe for half the year, but so far are looking OK.

Thought they were a very good team last year who boxed above their weight. Nearly rolled Maroochy in the BQJBC semi then had a disjointed Classics with Mitch and Corben flying in exhausted from All Australian mid tournament. Only had 1 bad game at Classics where they took their foot of the gas while in front against a frenzied Gladstone side. Had nothing left in the tank to maintain the necessary "choke" on the Gladstone guard quartet and got pipped down the stretch. Shame it was a qualifier. I was thinking if Garret Shiebner is bottom age 18's it would be a great opportunity for him (and a plus for the BBI firsts) to step into PL and take a "role" alongside Mitch? Lot to be learned playing a slightly different role and complementing a class player like McCarron in your bottom age year. Was pondering how Garret's finishing skills would grow running off Mitch instead of having to run other players off himself? Anycase, sure one of the huge numbers they have at the Club will see the opening and grab it if he doesnt.
The crystal ball tells me BBI, Gold Coast, Logan (if they can keep it real) and wait for it, Maroochydore into the 4 on countback. (Heard it from a dolphin off Mudjimba Island !!)

Gladdy deserved their semi final spot. Took it to bbi, and quite simply were the better team.

As for Maroochy top 4?? Your just taking a swing at SD. A shark told me there is no way SD will miss out, and then ate that dolphin of yours for breakfast.

Saw a 12 ft white pointer out there last week just lazing on his side on top of the water with a floppy fin and everything! Thought he was sick but Billy Hoffman rang a shark expert (Big Al I think) who said sometimes they just rest like that, especially after they've had a belly full. I was thinking it's a bit 'Spartanesque' (being big and powerful and quietly dangerous and all...) but Billy wrote the story in his newspaper column...so it must be true...maybe he did eat my dolphin mate.

Anyhow none of this has much to do with AIS scholarships but the news that 3 AIS guys (2 QLDers and 1 Vic) signed yesterday to join Patty Mills at St. Marys is.

What about gretal Tippett? Thought she would of been an automatic selection, too young at this stage?

I rate Brenden Teys, Damon Huir or Josh Jenkins if he isn't too old? over Cameron.

I didn`t know all three played the 4/5 spot .

For Teys and Hueir which guard would you replace at the AIS

Page. Cadee, Dellavadova, Salecich , Greenwood ,Brockhoff ????

I think Teys and Hueir are unlucky but with the quality of guards at the AIS it is understandable, i think at a minimum a invite to the Emus camp would have been great for these 2

Good point. Although I didn't think the AIS was about a 'team'? I believed it was more about the best athletes in the country given the best training for 2 or 3 years and given the best exposure to professional and college scouts,

I think they try and pick it as a team especially as they do play in SEABL they are not going to pick all bigs or all guards it a mixture just like you would when you are putting a team together.all positions are covered by exceptional athletes.

The AIS charter is to identify and develop athletes with the potential to compete at internationl level for Australia. The crop that graduate this year were identified as potentials for the 2009 World Games in Auckland. There's a whole range of criteria that goes into the selection of a player that has the potential ability and suitability to develop into a player good enough to play for Australia. There is a "tenet" of our National teams which was read out by Carrie Graff at Nationals opening ceremony. It goes like....... "7. A “WE” group.
Attitudes can be developed just like physical skills. The Australian team will be comprised of “we” people rather than “I” people.
A “we” group is characterized by affection, mutual respect, self-sacrifice and the absence of blame.
Players who see themselves as superior, those that allocate blame to their team-mates or are jealous of team mates do not have the attitude to play on this team."

Any clearer?

The tute isn't for everybody, its a great program. But can be to much for some, with so much training through out the year and with only 15 odd games of seabl. I can understand how some players would'nt like this, when they are used to playing a couple of games a week.

So if todd wanted to go back to his family why has he now gone to the crocs.

Has his family moved with him.

Um...not speaking for the Blanchfields but a full year older and 3 hours drive from Mackay in a similar city and culture to his hometown playing ball with a popular northern franchise is a fair bit different to living in a dorm and freezing in a place like Canberra.
The AIS might sound glamorous and it is undoubtedly a world class program but in life there's no "one size fits all". Doesnt mean Todd cant play and wont be successful.

He spent the year up until now in mackay, playing for the Meteors in the QBL, scored a Contract with Townsville so he took it. Best of Luck to him, hope he can crack the NBL on a full contract in the future, was great to play against him in the QBL this year.
