bbc only just beat BGS???? We are going to whip them badly in front of their fans. We will win by 50 - if Wilson plays (and since he was on crutches it is not likely) it might be 30. They just got nothin. Perimeter players are slow with no skills and the bigs are weak and don't rebound - especially those twins and the kid that can jump. TSS will dominate and be champions.

Why does everybody seem to single out the twins? They seem like solid, modest players. Have seen them play a bunch of times now and they perform well and aren't nearly as arrogant as most players these days, so why all the banter? And please do not accuse me of being their parent. A parent of a teammate.

So obviously TSS think they have the game sealed. Do other teams who have played both of them have an idea of who will win? Should be a good game I think.

First off I doubt the moron saying that TSS will kill BBC has anything to do with TSS basketball.
TSS should be the favorites, but they have been in this situation before and always seem to stumble at the final hurdle. A recent reminder of this is the Queensland school state champs where they had a 50 point turanaround in a few weeks to lose to State High. TSS have never won a GPS Open title, thats an amazing fact in itself.
BBC have been patchy despite remaining undefeated and have all kinds of excuses going into the decider. Their rock Ben Wilson hobbled by an ankle injury with PG Mennion just returning from his shoulder woes. However they have tasted success in the GPS before and do not discount the homecourt advantage. They get all the calls like most GPS teams do at home, including TSS.
My head says TSS, but I love the underdog so I am tipping BBC in double OT. ha ha

With BBC's injury woes I'm not sure of a starting 5 lineup. With Ben Wilson on crutches last weekend and Kirons shoulder, not sure if there playing. Cameron McDonald, Ben Bergen, Matt Stybros, Alex Stalder and Beau Bergen to start I'm guessing. BBC will give TSS a run for their money with home court advantage. TSS should win on paper with most of the team 2+ years older than BBCs but Go the Greens, BBC by 6.
Goodluck to both teams

WoW !!! This was the greatest School Basketball game I have seen for years...
TSS were too big!! too strong!! on the day for BBC. TSS have some big players.
No one should have left the stadium feeling dissappointed. Brisbane's GPS Competition is alive and well...
The pre-game hype was unbelievable for a school competition and the stadium was packed!! I've not seen a crowd this big a school basketball for years. I say 600 - 700 people ??
This game started with BBC running through a tunnel of fanatical spectators, obviously school colleagues and mates and the BBC Bagpipers and drummers doing their thing. Great to see!! This was awesome and set the scene for a great game.
TSS got away to a good start. I think 10 - 2 but BBC didn't let up closing the gap but not able to even the score.
The BBC press defence was awesome, especially for School Basketball but TSS were strong enough to break the defence and score on most offensive attacks. This ended up being the difference between the two sides....
TSS got the points in attack, whereas BBC failed to hit their baskets and this cost them.
BBC looked small compared to TSS and this was telling in the end. BBC did not rebound well in defence or offence. They were muscled out but bigger and stronger players. Well done TSS.
It is my opinion, that BBC's achievement today (20pt loss to TSS and TSS were worthy winners) will carry them forward for the next couple of years as they did seem to have a much younger team and should build momentum with their Basketball. They have a lot of talent in their team.
All the credit goes to TSS however, as they played a great brand of Basketball, but I would hate for the BBC boys to hang their heads low. BBC will get another tilt at the GPS Title next year with a team that should have learned a lot from today.
I thought BBC's captain (Ben Wilson) had a great game, especially having missed the previous game on crutchers. I do not recall him being benched all game and if this is true an even greater achievement...
Defensively, Matt Strybos was superb but in attack, this was not a good game for him although he started to hit his shots late in the game. McDonald ('C' Mac) got into foul trouble early but played well. The twins (Tell me, who can tell them apart?) they both played good. BBC used their bench more that TSS and this is one reason why I believe this team will be even more competitive next season.
I think the point guard, Kieran also played a great brand of basketball and for a fella that has an injury he drove hard to the ring at times which kept his team in the game. (I believe he may have actually popped his shoulder again during the game but played on with courage. Most spectators may not have even realised this.
All in all... This was a great spectical.
I was pleased I made the effort to get down to the venue to see this. I look forward to seeing more GPS Basketball here in Brisbane in the future.
Congratulation TSS... Better luck next season BBC.

TSS had 3 repeaters this year. BBC should remain strong if some guards can step up and play some strong ball. With Ben Wilson and Kieron leaving it leaves a side full of bigs with the Bergens and strybos
Unregistered
25-10-09, 21:42
they will have some younger guards stepping up in jacob wilson, and the bergens and strybos aren't usually bigs it's just that the BBC team this year had no real huge players so everyone in the team played most positions. BBC will still need to get more bigs next year if there going to have a chance.

stop talking shit you dont know about! tss had 2 players do year 11 and 12 over 3 years. so they didnt have 3 repeaters... and even then, gps has the age limit at 18 because they are a large portion of players who are 18 in year 12 without repeating. stop trying to drag tss down just because they won...

But i do agree with a couple of posts above, this years teams even TSS would not be able to compete against teams mentioned above and others , there would not be a player to hold there own against a number of previous talented players , Even this years TSS team would not have been able to compete against there previous second place finishing team with Laird , Salecich .Correa , Blundell and number of others,
The GPS Competition is not at the standard as it used to be it has not been for at least a couple of years.

Whats all this not to the same standard bullshit that everybody is spitting. There was an era with a bunch of talented players just past. What does that have to do with the standard of gameplay dropping. I watched many games and they were played outstandingly for a schools comp. Congratulations to all teams on a great season!

Have watched GPS for many a season and yes this couple of years the GPS competition is nothing like it used to be , non of these teams that have won the last couple of years would be competetive with the top 3 teams from a few years ago and the game is no where near the same skill set or athletism in general, this might upset you as a parent your kid might be a good player but considering some of the kids that have graced the GPS courts in recent years im with the posts above regarding talented teams , you just to have a look at some of the players just 3 years back just from the top of my head these guys were still playing at the same time

Though you raise a good point i can't agree with you entirely.
Yes Motum, Young and Salecich absolutely dominated GPS and there isn't an opposition to that - they were all studs of the competition.
In saying that, Carter didn't produce consistantly and wasn't that spectacular,Steindle was and still is an amazing athlete but was also inconsistant at times playing for ACGS, while Correa peaked in under 16's and didn't do much as a high school basketballer at TSS.
Kids like Andy Chen, Ben Wilson and Garrett Schriebner have had excellent seasons and are at the same, if not a higher level of basketball than the guys mentioned in the previuos paragraph. So, though it may not be at the same level as previuos years, the GPS competition this year hasnt been that much worse than other years - as multiple posters have been inferring.
Just my opinion,
Peace

Why did the game go into overtime?? I thought that didn't exist in GPS?? ( especially when either team winning would not change the premiership or even 2nd place?) The 2nds drew before this game so why?
Please don't tell me this was a ref's decision????

TSS the win on the road not sure of the full details just that TSS will have a premiership next week and that's the first bball one for em - congreats to Dave and the boyz.
Congratulations to TSS in 2009 who were too big, too strong, and too focussed and so outlasted the BBC press.
But TSS have won GPS Open Basketball Premierships before - 1980 and 1981 when all the GPS schools were there, but apparently basketball was not 'official' for a couple more years. In any case, everyone there at the time knew they were playing for the GPS title. No choking back then - TSS beat IGS by 1 point at IGS in the decider in 1980, and beat IGS by 11 in the 1981 decider this time at home at Southport. A crowd of only about 300 back then though. However, that's now three premeriships for the Southport boys!

i believe there was 3 levels to the competition
a step above the whole competition
1st - TSS
went down to TSS by 20 odd but all had close games any team could of beaten each other on any day . BBC probly better then scgs bshs and nc tho
2nd - BBC
3rd - ACGS
4th - BSHS
5th - NC
and the rest - GT taking alot of teams to the end but unable to come up with the win
6th - GT
7th - BGS
8th - IGS
9th - TGS
The Oracle

Ok enough of the smack talk who wants to do a season review?
TSS - Were dominant through and through. Had a huge lapse in Champion schools which was odd but performed well in GPS. The trash talk on this site denigrates what was a top season for TSS. With 2 or 3 repeaters and a majority of the remainder being top age they definitely held the advantage in the competition. Lose them all next season and look to round out the bottom of the ladder.
BBC - Looked like another top team and deserved their number 2 spot. Could have performed better if unhindered by injuries but lost their composure the game that mattered most. Wilson seemed to be overrated at times but had a good senior season nonetheless. Saying goodbye to only 4 or 5 senior players puts them in good stead for next season.
ACGS - Played well throughout the season but shouldn't have withdrawn from champion schools. Deserved 3rd spot as they didn't seem to bother TSS or BBC in their respective games. Retain Garrett and the other young guard so will have a few weapons next season. Lacking bigs which will trouble them in games
BSHS - They may have won state champs but against teams playing below their norm. Weren't a good team to watch but won games against the lower half of the ladder to earn their spot at 4th. Nicky will lead the team next year with Argon and shall also be quite strong. I put them in the top 3 with Churchie and BBC.
NC - Played better than most people expected but were never a threat to take the title. For a bunch of "no namers" (not used in the derogatory sense but rather that they are unheard of to me in the basketball world) they performed admirably and exceeded expectations, congratulations. As far as next year goes I have no idea. If the team was the same as this years then I would put them as 3rd/4th pick for next years GPS champs.
GT - Were up and down this season. Anthony Kelly returns next year so will still have their best player but unsure about his supporting crew. I'm not sure of GT and how they will perform next year.
IGS - I think it was a team of mostly bottom ages which will put them in good stead next year. Unsure if they will be able to compete with those I ranked in the top 3 however.
BGS - Looked to heat up at the end of the season. Having Sengstock out hurt them but I dont think it altered their position in the ladder too much. Expect them to finish in the middle of the pack next year.
TGS - Must give them kudos for competing to the end of their games. I tip them for bottom of the ladder next year.
NOTE: All these predictions are long shots and most of them will be wrong as so much can happen in between seasons. I mean just look at BBC, who would have predicted them at 2nd at the end of last season. Without recruiting the twins and having strybos grow 4" they would have finished 5th or possibly lower.

I have mentioned this before the standard of ball and players has dropped in the last 2-3 years. And it was quite clear this year and last year.
To the TSS poster bragging on being the last Monumental team , this years team was not a scrap on the team they had a few years back and they managed to finish equal second and were not even competitive with BSHS .
I honestly believe that the 2 Teams i have mentioned would belt this TSS monumental team by at least 40.

How is GPS a watered down comp from it's glory days ?? BSHS who got 4th in GPS won Champion Schools. That shows the strength of the GPS comp, that it is by far the strongest comp in Queensland.

GPS may still be the best schools comp in Qld, (seeing TAS only has 1-2 good teams, doesn't say much) but the standard of School Basketball in general has definetely slid over the last few years, but from a meteoric high.
This would partly be due to the success of Qld Basketballers over the last few years. The last couple of years of school comps would have looked quite different if players like Brock Motum, Jordan Page, Christian Saelich, Mitch Young, Cameron Bairstow etc... had continued playing for their schools, but due to their selection to the AIS, they weren't able to.
Also keep in mind when making comparisons to the teams a few years ago when these boys were playing to now, this was the best crop of players Queensland has ever seen. This years National Champion Qld u20 team has seen 8 Players go on to College Scholarships and the other 2 are playing in the NBL. 5 of them represented Australia at the u19 World Champs too.
So yes, the comp has dropped off in players like these absence, but I'd say we had a lucky period of extreme greatness that was better than years before or after, we will continue to see good teams, but will not see another group of players of that calibre come through for a while.
Also with the best two players from the last year (Wroe & McCarron) not being at GPS schools, where as usually one GPS school or another (or another power like JPC) would have these players makes school ball look less impressive

ipswich seem to think cause they were good in the 13s 2 years ago and 14s last year they will be good next year but not likely ippi will be down around the bottom again and will stay there for a while. TSS will always be tough, Churchie will be the favs next year, state high will always be close to the mark NC and GT will battle on but probs be battling for 4th - 6 spots while BGS will be yuk and BBC will be maybe in the 3 - 5 mix but they have lost a few too many good seniors this year and I don't think those coming through with the twins will get them over the Churchie, BSHS hump.

You failed to mention Jamie Rickward. 6"2 senior guard from Anglican Church Grammer School. The best prospect in GPS basketball. Believe the Hype.

That kid is ripped. His handles are crazy - schools anyone that tries to defend him. His hops and athleticism get him over and around anybody in the air. Great passer, rebounder and defender and can hit that from the 3point. He might not be well known yet but after this year, his name will be everywhere.
oh is he that import from darwin??
that kid is sick i thought he was a senior last last year wow

one of my mates from churchie was there and saw it.
this kid has hops but the scouting report from darwin said he was a bad shooter, i guess it doesn't matter when you can throw it down over the best of them

My advice to any non-Churchie GPS ballers: fake an injury.
If you play against me, I will make you cry.

i heard Lebron asked him to come play for Cleveland but on one condition Jamie wasn't allowed to dunk on him. He broke their agreement 8 times during his first session and was kicked off the team.

Gee I heard he has been invited to the all stars dunk competition by Dwight Howard, and Nate Robinsons giving him lessons, man this kid gets around. hahaha
Though I'm really looking forward to our first game against him so I can block the shit out of him and make him look a fool
