rankings
TSS- going to be good, not sure how many players are coming back.
BBC- going to be tough, as most of their first last year were grade 11. ( Wilson, Kiren)
BSHS- great young team with some last year 12's staying back. (chan, ethan)
BGS- same as BBC, very young team should be decent. (eric, schulz)
ACGS- decent this year, but really only have garrett.
GT- not a very skilled team but are always fighters. (anton)
NC- after losing some year 12's, this team will have too rely on the younger players. who don't seem all that skilled.
IGS- not going to be good. loss all 3 main players last year and will struggle greatly.
TGS- nothing to say really.

Alot of thing will change about Nudgee bball this year and they will have the dicipline to do well in first wouldn't be suprise if they won it but TSS BBC and state high will be very tough teams to beat

They would have to be super talent, a la State High who too lack discipline but just flat out play.
Discipline stems from the coaches. The teams of the last few years TSS and IGS just played gritty disciplined basketball. Players will do as much as their coaches let them get away with, and Nudgee just don't have the discipline and focus.
BBC also show great discipline and should do well this season.
Discipline and focus is what win games in the GPS, it would be argued Churchie are not the most talanted however they had the focus and discipline, TSS everyone played their role and it made for one hell of a team, IGS worked well with the role players supporting the big names.
This is why I say Churchie, BBC, State High, TSS or IGS could all win it.
GT will be behind them, Nudgee could beat any team but also lose to any team.
BGS showed signs of having some decent structure just lacked the focus, could be big improvers.
TGS continue to improve their program as someone said earlier hopefully they win a game.

yeah TSS are still competitive. they still have...
michael gullota
wes hatcher
nick seton
adin walsh and;
jaydan tom
but they don't have adam creighton their old PG who was one of the best players.
but backing them up -their 16A's were alright last year, came 2nd or 3rd but im sure if they work over the off season which TSS usually do, their discipline might pick them up a few skills
i dont know how good BSHS is though? who have they got?

BBC has a really strong team with alot of experience
TSS is always strong and has up comming players every year to prepare for the next year
BSHS really doenst have that much, they talk them up but really their not very strong, tom is their best player and if you lock down on him and grab boards their not that good
IGS hasnt got alot of experience but a good pg, and a strong team (not individually but they get it done)
Churchie hasnt got much left, they lost their core, Garret has been working hard all off season so he should be strong but i dont htink 1 player can carry them past most teams, who knows
Nudgee is strong but real dirty, with good refs they wont do much, they had a good 16's team but no real outstanding players, a good core though, with some luck and hardwork could take it all, but i doubt it
BGS pat and eric, lots of expereicne but other than that.. who? their 16s got rocked last year because all their players were in firsts, but only 3 of them actually got playing time so i dont think they have what it takes
GT not a very strong team at all, not many players played firsts alone and their 16s were weak defensively
TGS not anyhting really, will have some tall peple and grab lots of boards but likely to foul out and be to slow for the quicker pg sg players.

BBC - Agree
TSS - Yep will be inthe mix
BSHS - Will be better than you think I reckon
IGS - Nope, they have a team of not much but good guys
Churchie - Should be in the mix the DOC over there is putting together a program for now and tomorrow
NC - Good at home but will struggle on the road unless the refs let a physical style of play
BGS - Will be OK at best
GT - the slide of an old powerhouse continues but will still win the dive on loose balls and hustle awards cause that is Gribs trademark coaching
TGS - Its a long cold winter on the mountain but they will NOT lose the opening round by 100 this year

Yo this just in fellas churchie has just announced today the incoming of a new recruit from greece. His name is Jonas Valanciunas. His family moved here this month and decided to send this wonderkid to churchie after talks with long time family friend Peter Marinos. NBA Draft has him as the #1 prospect internationally for the 1992 age group. If anyone sees him around the local basketball scene please dont hesitate to welcome him to Australia.

This is what is known, in the vernacular as "absolute rubbish." The new Churchie player, though quite good is not 6'10", does not have an NBA draft page and was not last years winner of the European u16 MVP.
If you hear a rumour, at least be reasonable enough to say it's a rumour, and don't pretend that it's "Churchie just announced today."

TGS not anyhting really, will have some tall peple and grab lots of boards but likely to foul out and be to slow for the quicker pg sg players.
nudgee arnt dirty all the other teams are just pussys. u no that all american high school ball is very physical and there the best in the world. toughen up

I can't agree more with the last four sentiments, but it's going a bit far to say he "kills it in GBL." He's certainly performed far better than you'd expect even a good player of that age to perform at that level, but he's still got a few years of growing in him before we will (and I'm sure he will) "kill it in GBL."
Seems though, that trolling has become the norm in this topic on the board, so I can't see why you're surprised at the number of ill-advised comments.

I heard Syd recruited him from the lithuanian national team to play for hellas.

First off I just want to say for everyone to get off Garrets back the kid can play even if he does have an enormous head.
But the person everyone should be talking about is Sam Triebles the high flyer from CHURCHIE This kid has it all dashing looks, great glutes and a positive mental attitude. All 3 qualities of an oustanding basketball talent.
I know what you guys are going to say, he cant go left... his jump shot needs a bit of work.... but you should see the improvement in this kids game since then. A series of explosive drives to the hoop for some spectacular slams last practice session was a pure example of this.

i thought this board was to talk about basketball rankings and why teams will come where??
not for people to up themselves and people from their school
yeah garrett might be good
so is eric from bgs
wilson and keiran from bbc
tom from bshs
people are good, but 1 person cant win you a premiership, this is gps not nba
you dont have lebron james or kobe bryant
the best teams will be the taems with depth, teams that can play role players (bench players) and still compete on the floor
any one know who corban wroe is i hear hes moving to a gps school?

.. big news
apparently, igs has scouted some new players for the next few years, this year they have brought down corban wroe from redcliff, and have been nationally looking at guards and big men. The team this year will most likely be composed of the prodigy, the truth, the truth part 2, corban, and the big man in the middle, baby shaq. These are obviously just nick names because the team doesnt want anything to come out butt this is pretty serious. Could hvae a really good team..
this means that seconds will probably be ripping shit up.. having most of their first players (seniors) in the 2nds team so should be a good year for igs basektball

Ok firstly.. igs hasn't been looking for anyone, because they have "sean" that kid that thinks he's top shit but really can't even handle or shoot a ball?
Secondly, yes they do have younger state and national players.. but they are simply not good enough to contest with the higher ranked teams such as the likes of bshs, tts and bbc..
IGS is a joke in the name of GPS basketball!! i know a few players from their team and they might as well run home and hide.. unless they want to be beaten by 50 each game.. well, they might have a chance against tgs.
But other than that, igs is up the creek without a paddle!!

I dont see why everyone mentions that kid sean, hes really not that mentionable.
and yeah the younger players wont be able to compete. i agree with that
but from watching them play 16's and firsts last year, their main guards are pretty decent mate, maybe their not super stars but i expect the team to get alot done, alot more than expect.
However, i highly doubt they will contest for a premiership, like you say they dont have that talent but cmon now

Well. Churchie must get the nod here with Bruce Palmer. But he's only just started and, as good as he is, hasn't had a chance to build. This may not matter with Garrett and Jared on the line (not to mention a rumour about a 14 year old with a double handed dunk), but building is important.
Nudgee, of course, have some good coaching staff. As do BBC. If it weren't for Bruce Palmer and his ablity to attract key players, I think BBC would have the juice in the coaching area - John White has very few peers as far as building a program goes. Both schools (Nudgee and BBC) will be well prepared and well drilled. Churchie may have an initial lead with the talent, but it won't be a walk in the park. A very depleated 18s club team absolutely drilled them without Jared and, if they do not play to their potential, either BBC or Nudgee could take care of them on any day out.
Meanwhile, Grammar can't be completely ruled out as a force. The Thomas team has a lot of nouse and, if Toby runs hot from a metre or two outside the three point line and Eric dominates in the paint as he can (given JeremyK, JoshO and AshM are not playing GPS, this is expected rather than hoped for), they could cause some unpleasant upsets. Sure, they probably don't have the personel to win it, but Pat, Toby and Eric will cause havok no matter who they play... Thommo knows this and knows how to use it.
Aside from that, though, there's not a lot going on. IGS will turn up with their standard bigs. TSS will play a fast game and TGS will.. well.. let's be honest here - LOSE.
Terrace is the only one left but, while their coach is a nice chap, he seems to be more suited to rowing. They had a team, but they're lounging at the bottom of the BBI comp and losing so embarssibingly, they could almost be playing division 2.
So, in the coaching stakes -
1) Palmer (ACGS) and White (BBC),
2) Thomas,
3) Daylight,
4) Nudgee coaching team
5) The Rest
I think Churchie will be far too strong in most games, unless BBC get Luke back. However, it won't be a walk in the park and I expect a Grammar upset to make it tight for them at the end of the season.
Churchie on a count-back over BBC. But an easy countback at that.
Churchie 7-1 (loss to Grammar)
BBC 7-1 (Loss to Churchie)
Nudgee 6-2 (Loss to BBC and Churchie)
Grammer 6-2 (Loss to BBC and Nudgee)
What I'd like to see is the GPS premiers playing Marist. Now, that'd be good.
I suspect, though, that whatever team wins the GPS this year, they'll be flogged by the eventual winners of the BBI 18s comp. How's those Falcons and Dragons at full strength - ridiculously good.

First off BP is the best coach in the comp, John White and him on level pegging?? That's a joke right?
John White is not even coaching firsts at BBC, Nigel Bergen is, and the program is and has been run by Dave Bennett for a number of years now.
Luke Gribble is a fine BB coach, just because Terrace Admin do not support their BB program at all is not his fault.
Dave Claxton; you failed to mention him at all, I know only a current NBL GM, former NBL HC and Boomer AC. TSS are the clear favorites they return their dominant players from last seasons runners up side. Gullotta and Walsh are both 18 now and are virtual men playing against boys.
Second favorites would have to be BBC, especially now that they have recruited the Bergen twins from Bundy/M'Dore into their program. BBC have joined in the recruiting game, these 2 will make them legit along side their other recruit and Ben Wilson.
Who does Nudgee have as their Firsts Coach?? I know Mick Scott is/was there and I also know that they sent out flyers to most of the PL clubs asking for expressions of interests from coaches to work there. Hardly sounds like a program you described as "Nudgee, of course, have some good coaching staff."
Your description "Falcons and Dragons at full strength - ridiculously good" is another laughable statement. The BBI U 18 comp is at it's weakest in a number of years. One of the GPS teams in the comp recently flogged a full strenght "ridiculously good Falcons team" by almost double their score. IMO there are no "ridiculously good" teams in the U 18 comp at all, I agree that Falcons and Dragons will probably play for the title, mainly because the GPS teams use this is a warmup for their real comp.
Just some facts and a bit of food for thought..

Please do read what I wrote. My very first line was "Well. Churchie must get the nod here with Bruce Palmer." I then go on to explain that he has only just started and that this represents a significant negative. It is this that leads me to rank them equally.
I would be very surprised to hear that John White is not in ultimate charge (in practice, if not in name) of anything related to basketball that John White is involved with. Regardless of who has the firsts side, my point is that it is his program and that his programs are very, very good. BCC will present as a very well drilled side, regardless of their player roster. If it is indeed Dave who is pulling the strings, my opinion of him just goes up several notches. Perhaps it would be better to say that the equal best coach, with BP (with the rider that BP has only just started at Churchie), is the BBC program - regardless of who is running it??
Perhaps I am a little unfair to Luke, but their side is well down on its potential IMO. I look at their bigs and think "what a waste". Sorry. I notice another poster has indicated they are going well in under 20 BBI. The BBI under 20 comp is and has been for some time, a significantly inferior competition to the under 18 comp - most 18/19 year old players of quality are playing under 23, D-League, QBL or GBL (or attending the AIS, of course).
I didn't mention Dave Claxton because, while he is undoubtedly a very knowledgable and skilled coach of men, who has seen great success in his playing days and a great person (I hear), I'm not seeing much indication that he is of the same level as the top three I did rate when it comes to coaching boys. TSS have been caught and overtaken, I believe.
I do not know the Nudgee First V coach but, much like BBC, the key with Nudgee is the Nudgee program itself. They will be a very well drilled team, no matter who takes them and no matter who plays for them. It is certainly true that this may not hold in the near future, with a number of new coaches sought by NC sure to cause disruption, but the work has already been done for this year for the Firsts side.
Finally, I am under the impression from reports that the team Churchie flogged was a bench side. A very good bench side, certainly. And Churchie put on an impressive show. They may well do the same thing against the full side. But I don't believe that will be the case. Our opinions differ here. In any case, that comp is hardly important - Classics, Schools and GPS is going to make it a lottery. 'twas just a passing comment.

1. You must be from BBC!!!!!!!!!!!!
2. Dave Claxton is excellent and doing a great job
3. Gribbs is excellent
4. The Nudgee program!!!!!!!!! Have you got a clue about this? Undisciplined, disorganised etc etc etc. Mick Scott is quality and does a great job, but has nothing to work with because ther's nothing coming thru. The only time they've ever done well is when they scholarship the entire state squad!!!!!!
5. Most important point - PLAYERS MAKE COACHES! Give Churchie 2008 to a chimp and they still win or close to it. Not knocking BP - he is excellent - you would want some good sh.... the amount they pay him for 10 weeks work!

"Players Make Coaches!" is a ridiculous statement. Sure when you buy in players you are always going to be highly competitive but remember they are still only kids and rely on a good coach to improve their skills and get their head right. Good coaches attract great talent, if the kid is that good more than one school is coming knocking.
I'm surprised by such harsh criticism of Nudgee's program. They have never been a basketball powerhouse but have done well with what talent they have. You must have the inside scoup to say it is disorganised and undisciplined. Mik & Richard have done a great job but definately need some additional help, it will be interesting to see what direction they go in with their coach recruitment.

Players make Coaches is a ridiculous statement when analysing the GPS competition. In, say, the NBA, then it is not so ridiculous. Do you think Phil Jackosn would have won 10 titles coaching teams that didn't include Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant or Shaquille O'Neal? No, I didn't either. Even in college, to a certain degree: Syracuse's coach in 2003 was obviously riding Carmelo to the top, but coaches like John Wooden, Dean Smith, and Mike Kryzezewski never had particularly great talent to work with, bar maybe one player (for example, Wooden had Bill Walton while he was at UCLA, but a team of mediocre players otherwise). In GPS however, coaches definitely make the players to a degree. Where would you be if you hadn't been taught to shoot properly by a coach?

Terrace is the only one left but, while their coach is a nice chap, he seems to be more suited to rowing. They had a team, but they're lounging at the bottom of the BBI comp and losing so embarssibingly, they could almost be playing division 2.
Just to let you know, terrace are playing in the u20 comp and well last time i looked they were coming second. Their big man has been playing up a year all the time but now he has come down and is killing it. Will grab the rebounds all day.
"Lounging at the bottom, losing what?" That word was spelt so badly I don't eve know what it means. And Terrace isn't at the bottom. How about 3rd? Better than all the other GPS teams, too. Oh wait, there aren't any with guts enough to play U 20's. Terrace's team in u/18's is a group of Year 11's.

Stokes is Coaching them this year solo, without scotty from what I believe.
Nudgee are putting a lot of effort into basketball this year, with things like camps which for nudgee basketball is a beginning, Nudgee also have a few new stars to look out for for this year.
Obviously I dont think they will win, but look for 4th or so

You are obviously unaware of the times that Brian Kerle, Bruce Palmer and other excellent coaches have been smashed, sometimes by over 100 points, in GPS games. First team coaches can only work with what they are provided with - they may be able to improve the group by 10% but are largely at the mercy of the talent they have inherited and the previous coaching the players have had at school, club and rep.
Give any top coach TGS this year and they still finish bottom 3. Coach may help a team reach near its potential but can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. In an 8 game season, the impact of the coach is even less.
What is St Mary's without Paddy Mills - same coach, same program, same offence etc etc- far different results.
Take Schriebner out of ACGS last year. Premiers - i don't think so.

I'm sure a smart chap like you can work it out.
The under 20 comp is significantly worse than the under 18 comp at BBI. Has been for years. All the good players of that age have moved on from juniors basketball - or at the very least are playing under 23.
Terrace has a team in under 20s for one or both of two reasons. 1) They have a number of players who are turning 18 this year and want the side to play together and/or 2) They aren't good enough to put on a decent show in 18 boys.
If your son is playing under 20s and is eligible for under 18 - either get him swapped to the 18 side, or join a club.

lol.. Call.
I agree with Rob, if it is he, in that GPS coaches don't have that much of an effect in the current season. But we shouldn't ignore the difference between a coach on his/her own and the program they put together. Taking that into account, it's a bit of a chicken and egg situation... although we all know that in GPS sport, what comes first in most cases is the splashing of the cash - in one way or another.

Don't know what you are talking about, hype over BBC, what hype??? Yes BBC is going to be alot stronger this GPS season with Ben Wilson, Kieran, Cameron and Ben and Beau Bergen but so are most of the other teams. TSS is a hugely stacked team with mostly top ages. Churchie will be tough as will Nudgee.
PS Nick Seton a man .....haha you are joking aren't you

Favourites they might have been, but ended up finishing third behind the 'Dream Team' & Minnesota.
TSS appeared impeccably well drilled and ran well as a team, however lacked the explosive all-star qualities of the 'Dream Team' & the 'hardness' of the eventual winners from the U.S.
I'm pretty sure they will end up on top of GPS & will be incredibly difficult to stop @ Champion Schools.

Far out. You are hilarious. We'll see who winds up in the top 4 at the end of the season... Too much talking smack online I think. Play the game and when you win then you earn the right to talk smack but until then grow up because who knows, you might make yourself look pretty stupid later on ;)

16- churchie by 3, close game, shoot made just after buzzer by grammar
1st- churchie proved too much for grammar from the start, garrett and jaryd carried churchie to the win, won by 40
seemed like a close game between terrace and state high

Yep I was way off the mark.
Pretty much on the money with the 3 results I know of, Ippi lose by 30 to TSS actually got told they only scored like 3 points in the second quarter, BSHS win by 9 and churchie up huge. Just not sure of the Nudgee game as yet but hey you are right clown I am spending too much time talking smack and you must be spending too much time taking crack.
But its all in fun.

I was expecting a big game from TSS being the season opener against a much weaker team, but apparently not. They played tight defence in the first quarter with good pressure, but then just left a man or two open and allowed Ipswich to push the ball up easier than they would have liked. Some bad decisions and alot of turnovers cost the team, but they were always gonna take Ipswich down. In the end and you could see their coach was getting pretty annoyed and I don't blame him, come two weeks time against Churchie they better bring their game or it will be second place all over again!

Heard a similar story but to TSS's credit you generally play to the oppositions level and that was fair at best. Ippi are young and will improve but will not trouble the better teams. NC game was all over early as to be expected just too big and too strong and may trouble a few of the teams in 09. State High was a bit of a worry thought they would be better and Churchie will be tough. Will have to wait and see what BBC are like next week against Ippi to get a real idea of whether they are contenders or pretenders. All in all the favourites did what most thought and I think the top 4/5 looks very predictable with the likes of TGS, BGS GT and Ippi having a right royal battle in the bottom half, well maybe not Toowoomba.....lol

So, BSHS's one big is going to make up a 25 point deficit? I mean, c'mon, and the refs in that game weren't exactly helping Terrace either. So, even if they did have their "big", I don't think it would have helped much. State High's guards couldn't even get the ball past halfway.

Cade in Cairns playing under 15 Met East. Has potential but an awful lot of development needed - needs to be able to catch the ball!!! - certainly not ready to dominate Opens. Hope someone puts in the time to develop him as a player.

Yeah, was more like 20 because the bench kept stuffing up. Without Wallis and Ogunmokun but that kid from JPC that thinks he's gods gift to women played way above his skill level. Fairly scrappy game but BBC in control from the tip.

i dont know about GT they may be the real deal - this week will test them tho v churchie , only going down to state high by 9 was big.
even tho as usual when state high dont win big or when they loose of course they were missing players as normal why dont u just get a commitment from your team to play every week like all other schools

BBC 35+ (too much depth and talent)
ACGS 15 plus (the test for GT)
NC plus 25 (NC wont really blow them out but an easy win)
BSHS 50 plus (TGS to have 2 quarters with 6 points or less scored)

No, the assistant coach was an Asian All-Star and played college in the Phillipines for Phillipines State University. And then went on to play in the CBA (Chinese Basketball Assosciation) and got picked first overall in the CBA Draft in 2006. He injured his foot and never quite played like he used to. So now he's coaching Nudgee. Quite a good pickup for the handsome Nudgee team. Heard he reps the dog tags, or how Coach Del Castillo spells it, Dog Tagzzzz.

I think it's a shame that people are always trying to bring others down. Give the guy some cred, he got the spot and im sure he got it over some other Queenslanders - he obviuosly deserves it!

Ok, so he's going to make up for a backcourt that couldn't get the ball past halfway half the time, and then go on to score 26+ against one of Terrace's better defensive teams. I mean, when pressure is being put on the guards they cant feed him the ball! And Terrace easiliy had control of the boards the whole game, with two guys 6'3"+ clogging it up at any one time. I mean, State High didn't have anyone taller than Terrace's front 3. And this is 14's. So, yeah, don't think it would have made a difference.
I gotta say, Terrace down only 9 to State High is a good result: team with alot of 11's this year.

no way one big could score 26. the best players in gps basketball rarely even get 20 or more points.
