watched pbc beat an nz team by 50 the other day. look like they have the goods with 2 new twin talls, both about 6'6 and can play. with another 3 guards, one has handles, shot and speed. other is fundamentally perfect and structured passing game, and the best, a young kid who gets up something chronic...hitting shots left right centre and a flarey game. would not underestimated the gc teams, especially pbc and tss

if those twins are the ones that play for gold coast under 18s... and the young kid who gets up something chronic is brad... then TSS is definently only the team to be worried about from the coast.

brad is at benowa, the twings pull down good boards and can score...then thay have 3 fellas...rupar, anthony and jai??? all can play, rupar gets up and is smart...anthony has flare and can score even tho he is like 15/16 and jai is fundamentally perfect in regards to structure, passing game. Reminds me of googs from TSS, just not as well rounded yet...

Interesting, there's lots of talented school coaches but not many get a run in qld basketbal-aba,d league etcis that their choice? names that pop up Sue See from Bshs, fox from PBC, thalo from hillcrest. Do the assoc look at theseguys?they havegood records in developing talent and would build rep progs up well or r the assoc focussed on their own people?

Um...could you name a player that one of these people developed, not just had in their school team after been developed in their week to week basketball? Difference is that these guys coach for pay at the schools and association coaches are volunteers (usually)

yeah the twins are gone to the czech to play for their national team and after that they are going to the states to play college. but they also have the option of playing in the PBA (phillipino basketball league) where they have been offered alot of money. but when they hit or go to college in america the twins are splitting up. they have been offered in different places.

Good idea and I know those 3 guys quite well. There was a short bloke running round Brisbane saying he developed Chris Goulding (till Goulding fronted him) Theres another BQ guy reckons he's been involved in Isiah Tueta's development for a number of years too. Equally laughable.
Anto was as raw as hell and playing purely on undeveloped athleticism till he went to the Blaze. Semerands would be interesting as they've had so many coaches through the QAS and Districts but I guess a teacher at JPS could probably claim they developed them (even though Ollie Dudfield ran the individuals there as the QAS coach)
Still unconvinced.
Afraid its been my experience that the coaches who get themselves on the payroll coaching at a school generally recruit kids who have become marquee players somewhere else to their school by way of scholarships and stuff. i.e. Did Sue-see develop Mitch Young or did he recruit Mitch to BSHS?
Could you cite some more examples?

Pretty good deal to get the same pay as someone whose done 4 years at Uni just to coach basketball.

Unregistered
04-05-09, 19:41
I think it could depend on the program itself what impact the coaches have. No way jpc coach should be shooting off claiming he developed player talent. Only thing they develop is scholarships and take players.I think schools impact on the whole athlete development doing weights etc. Schools are an untapped resource really by the pro clubs. Rugby league afl etc are prowling the schools looking for talent.Syd teams ie tigers send players to schools like keebra park for footy not aware of any nbl teams doing this

Public school coaches teach aswell...I'd like to hear what those 3 guys say about their hs coaches. what about the Townsville guys cedars?their hs program is generally strong.the feeling I'm getting is that champ schools isn't a fair gauge as teams are poaching and bolstering their team...how can u get the best team when really it is the most $ or best recruiting that wins

The best way to stop all this BS debate about who did what in the development of our up and coming basketballers, is to ask the players who was their most influential development coach. It isn't hard and then it is on the record without people trying to take credit for something they didn't do. Just because a player went to a particular school, club, QAS or played in a state team doesn't mean that each and every coach developed them. Don't forget there may also be individuals coaches in the mix as well.

Stop the squabbling, it can't prove anything.

Just thought id throw out there that i went to school with olah, played with him for about 4 yrs and he is a good mate of mine. Through highschool at PBC, foxy worked on anto extremely hard as he saw antos raw potential and extreme athletisicm from an early age. With this he also worked on antos flarey attitude and tagged up with antos father while doing this. anto was extremely driven, staying behind many times to continue training by himeself or with his father and especially on the weekends. Fox was a driving force behind his development (along with antos father) and is one of the best/ most grounded coaches ive ever played under and a great bloke with a smart bball sense. the pbc team this year has some talent with foxs new prospects playing....shall be interesting to see how they go at states.

More coaches like Heath Fox are needed on the gold coast with only good visions/intentions for the younger prospects under them

While BC may have the skills to run the point in Open A, Morris has the superior strength & game-maturity...give BC some more time, he will kill, but give Richard his props!
JPC has a steady flow of young, high quality PGs coming through their school system, they always have, they just like to bring them in slowly, give them the time they need to 'grow' into the on-court leader role.

Four teams capable of claiming top 3 spots...don't know who's gunna miss out tho.

1. JPC
2. TSS
3. Churchie
4. BSHS

Probs end up in that order too. JPC is stacked, TSS almost as stacked, maybe not as strong off the bench (JPC could probably have two teams that rate). Churchie & State High look good as well, can't really pick between the two, probably come down to their bench as well.
I know TAS is already going and JPC is shredding (not much competition though ;-)...GPS is on soon, I guess we'll start to see how these teams are performing soon enough.
So much BS on the GPS thread it's hard to tell...

Are you saying that JPC have the best bball program in the whole of Qld and possibly Australia?
If so, I am surprised at how brainwashed you are. JPC has critical flaws to their system and most players I have seen go in and go out end up worse for the experience. You should take an anonymus poll of your players to hear some truth.

St Columbans put up a fight yesterday against JPC, only going down by 18.
I'm also pretty sure that Brandon holloway plays for st columbans and I didn't see him playing yesterday. Possible underdogs in pool 4? However mt creek and nudged will be too strong

only going down by 18? seems like a pretty decent margin.

dunno how mountain creek is looking this year, but churchie are definately a much better team than nudgee.

Not technically. They have been selected for NTH QLD but I'm not sure whether they have made a full state side? A few would have. A bunch of those guys are past state players too. Making state a few years back doesn't help you a hell of a lot when you are playing against opens.

Predictions for thursday?
It all starts with a Bang!
BSHS v BBC.... Could go either way, first time it was 61-55 to BBC this year, however injuries have hit both teams and both teams come in out of form!

Nudgee v St Columbans... Going to go with Nudgee v unknowns.

JPC v St Pats.... JPC will open their title campaign with a strong win no doubt.

TSS v Padua.. Padua to get a welcome to the Championship Division to the tune of 30+

Hillcrest v Cairns SHS.. Got to go with Cairns here, but look forward to seeing Hillcrest.

PBC v Saint Mary's... PBC should be too strong v another unknown.

IPC v Varsity... Could be a good game going with tradition and taking IPC here.

Churchie v Town High.... Could be a good game, going to go with Churchie coming off a win last weekend.

Mt Creek v Nudgee... a Improved Nudgee, a weakened Mt Creek, Creek still too good here though.

BGS v BSHS.. If BSHS lose first up this is a danger game, however tipping BSHS obv.

JPC v GT.... JPC just too strong again

St Columbans v Churchie... gonna go with Churchie here, again don't know stc.

TSS v Varsity... repeat of preseason.. TSS by 20+

St Pats v St marys... St Pats to get on the board here and secure a top 16 spot.

Padua v IGS... Bottom of the Ladder in GPS v Top of the Ladder in AIC... IGS to get a early W.

BGS v Hillcrest... Should be a good game, BGS have week in week out tough games, and HIllcrest don;t have something they haven't seen. BGS for the win.

Mt Creek V Town High... Another hard pick in a tough little pool, Mt Creek get my tip here.

Cairns SHS v BBC... BBC should be too well drilled, but Cairns looked good last year.. Hard Pick.. Going with BBC.

PBC v Gt... Another tough pick... I'm going with PBC.

IPC v IGS... IGS with 2 afternoon games won't have it left in the tank to go with a team that should be very good.. IPC here comfortable margin too.

It is a shame that BBC has had a few players out with injury. Would have been good to see if they actually had what it took to take out this competition. They definitely have the weapons to do it but not sure if they would against a tough TSS and JPC side. On any given day these 3 teams have the capacity to win.

Don't TSS just play there starters get a good lead and then there bench hold that lead...

They must be doing something right... Especially since they are looking like taking out the championship here and at GPS...

They just run too hard for other teams... There bench arent as skillful but they run the court harder than most others out there... They have proved it in the GPS, I can't wait to play them!

thats mostly true. they have a 6 man rotation. they have only ever put any of the other 4 on either end or 3rd of the during the 4th quarter. with tournament basketball will be interesting to see if they are played more throughout the games otherwise we may see tss burn out towards the end of the comp.

JPC V BBC

My predictions;
Should be a JPC cake walk with all the talent they have. I mean a state player in the JP 2 team, comeon! I think they will end up with "egg" on their faces and Mtn Creek should take out that side of the draw.

TSS are the be all, just ask their boys on here. Should make it through with little difficulty. If State high can get past St Pats, it will be interesting to see how the TSS boys treat Tommy after his recent post game comments. Lets hope these two meet, will be fun to watch!

I reckon Mtn Creek to win, Lachi Miller is all the things the TSS bigs are not, he will dominate them. Seth Turner is the toughest kid in the tourny and has a chip on his shoulder, watch out. if Josh G wakes from his slumber it will be all over.

Interesting to see no Iggy Park, they are on another "ship" now. Always talk themselves up but couldn't beat that powerhouse from the South: Padua!!

Only North team is St Pats, power is in the South, thats becoming the norm these days.

What has happened to the once proud Town High boys program? Not long ago they were national Schoolboys champs, now they have not won a pool game!

The broken leg injury to the PB kid was a shocker, some claim to have even heard the break in the stands, was ugly. Reports are he is to have surgery soon, the prognosis is good. hope to see him up and around soon.

Wondering why the Championship division is not at the new Logan stadium? Maybe footsul have booked it out? Seems a perfect opportunity to esthblish the venue with the BB public in the south. Will have to wait and see a WNBL game to experience it i guess??

Have a good weekend and good luck to all

Thats a joke. TSS is going to blow out BSHS tomorrow. All they have is laycock and maybe if his shooting was as good as his flopping and whinging then they would be in with a chance. They are not in the same league as TSS, Mountain Creek and JPC. Poor form on JPC's behalf for their behavior during this tournament. I was surprised they were actually allowed to play today. Most other schools would immediately force the team to forfeit as they have brought a negative image on their school.

yeah TSS is really developing a strong reputation as chokers.

they'll probably fall at the end of GPS and come 2nd again

no doubt they have a much better team than bshs, with TSS having many quality state and rep players. Wheras BSHS is very much a development side with 7 Year 11's and 3 year 10's

I think how a team and their players behave while at a competition in the public eye is definitely relevant. If there are misdemeanors while in the public eye and you are at a school competition, even a club competition there should be consequences.

Wow, both JPC teams won ugly yesterday afternoon. Massive match-ups in second div today with Runcorn & St James in the first semi (should be a very physical game) & JPC 2 & Albany Creek in the other.
Looks like JPC could take out Div 1 & 2, or at least figure in both finals, I disagree with most on here though with the JPC 1 guards turning the ball over too much (I think Ogunmoken was the standout) but it was the guards who got the div 2 team thru. Goes to show all the haters talking sh*t about their program don't really know what they're talking about.
Shame to see TSS lose...thought they were the much better team, but some BSHS got the win, too much speed & better shooting down the stretch when it counted.

JPC,s program is simple: just recruit the best and most talented players to their school. Everyone knows they have the most talent by far. They have been doing it for years.

Some of the "haters" include JPC families involved in the school from the day dot. Kids like Bernard Tarca an U 16 state rep, who has been there since primary school, is forced to play in the 2nd side. When JPC recruited Jimmy/Sam Wallace this year, he was relegated to the 2nds. There are more similiar stories too.

A lot not to like about the JPC "program".

If I were BSHS staff I would watch Cade Towers like a Hawk, cause you know the JPC recruitment team have identified this kid.

Will Jimmy Wallace win back to back titles at different schools? Has that ever been done before?

Looked to me like Claxtons reluctance to run more than 6 the whole tournament has bitten him on the backside. Could not work out why he had the foot down and continued to run teams into the ground with his core group when the game was clearly over in the earlier matchups. No legs in the end and their bigs are not real quality, just big.

Sure Tommy L enjoyed the last laugh after the bake he has gotten from TSS supporters on here.

Where are Iggy Park? Boys have been quite after dropping to the minor placing round. Apparently they are just playing for "fun" now. Fun is talking of winning then coming 13th?

BBC look like finishing 5th, not sure why someone said they were underachievers? Seemed about right from where I am sitting.

Mitch McCarron averaging 34 in D2 at his non BB school with some of his mates, nice effort. If you have seen them play they only really have MM, and he is playing with the right spirit.

Whats with the Runcorn Team chasing a trophy in D2? Come on Sid have a crack in the Championship division.

Stay tuned..

.

I love when a great player doesn't go to one of the big schools (im sure any one of them would love to have him). More often than not the last thing thing the kids needs at school is more basketball. Yet basically all of them elect to go to a GPS school. Then we sit back and wonder why so many kids burn out.

Nice to see him having fun in D2 though

i dont speak for all, but some players want to achieve everything in their basketball career. including winning a GPS premiership and a school state championship.

but you're rights, extra school basketball doesn't help kids when they have other basketball, academic commitments and the need to just be a teenager

Doesn't help when coach for JPC run numbers 4 and 5 for most of the game and contribute nothing to the game and choke when a little bit of pressure is on them one of them scored one point the other 2 points, and number 9 scored 9 points could of scored 50 if he did'nt keep missing I'm sure the game plan was pass it to those 3 no matter how badly they played number 8 played well and taylor barry scored 13 considering he wasn't on the court much and ricky morris through himself in the game. Coach you should of mixed it up and let your players play their game you held the talented players back thats what lost it for JPC.

I would have never guessed that result. So many teams beat state high by comfortable margins. I guess they perform better when playing in a long competition. Not too great a gauge of a teams caliber but I guess congrats. Most people will shoot this down but GPS is a better indicator of a teams ability. Would be much better if there were two rounds though so each time played each other twice.

Don't you think they may have been the egg throwers at Logan Hyperdome caught by police while in School uniform. Personally I feel the school would of pulled all involved in the incident from the competition immediately. The coach apparently thought it was harmless fun and let them finish playing that day. And bad form by you raising it and commenting on it here. If you guys are genuinely concerned go through the appropriate channels.

Some of the things being said about Garrett are disgusting. The kids a fierce competetior, and he actually showed up and played in the tournament. The other 2 boys going to the Aus Camp in 2 days time choose to stay home and not play for their schools. A wise decision probably but this kid competes and some of you chumps want to crucify him for sucumming to an injury 3 days before an Aus Camp! Thats pathetic on your part, the green eyed monster raises it's ugly head again!!

I know he was carrying a back injury into the TSS quarter, and was accidently kneed during the game. And they were not getting blown out at all, they were hanging tough, till Garrett sucumbed to the back injury. He also had to get treatment and get his hips realligned and will be battling to be fully fit for this Aus camp. He is trying to cement a place in an Australian junior team that he helped qualify for the upcoming World championships. A bit of respect for a kid who competed in an event that he really did not even have to play in.

Leave the boys on the team out of this, it was a decision by the school not to play on Sunday.

can i just add something.. although i very much agree to the above post ( that garett is a fierce competitor) i still think the school is a bit dodge. they entered the same club division i played in at BBI in the div 1 under 18s. And we expected to meet them in the final after we won our semi. but to our surprise on the night of the final we find out Churchie got disqualified for playing players who weren't registered for their team. so basically they brought in players just for the semis/finals. that says a lot about the program and it's pretty scum. maybe Garrett's dad should run it cause im sure he'd do a blooody good job of it.

Listen guys you all need to take a chill pill. Congrats to bshs they have done well to do over a very strong jpc. As far as injuries we have all been there, why bag teams after Injuries. and as far as suspensions take a step in the foot steps of a teacher before you make comments. Look at mcshs who lost Josh g and both their guards but still gave their best to come 4th, you all do your best to get as far as you get. Surely the game is the winner!!!!!!

if the principal intervened.. why would he let them play at all? they would've been in school uniform at the end of the bench. funny how everyone says state has a fluke run.. im sorry but didn't we do this last year aswell? we've dominated gps basketball enough.. the truth is TSS gave us 50 million so they could have a chance at the title. don't need jimmy wallace he's dog.. left state high to be with his gurrll at jpc. such a drama queen.

Dominated GPS? I thought they lost to all the decent teams?

And bad form by you raising it and commenting on it here. If you guys are genuinely concerned go through the appropriate channels.

Some of the things being said about Garrett are disgusting. The kids a fierce competetior, and he actually showed up and played in the tournament. The other 2 boys going to the Aus Camp in 2 days time choose to stay home and not play for their schools. A wise decision probably but this kid competes and some of you chumps want to crucify him for sucumming to an injury 3 days before an Aus Camp! Thats pathetic on your part, the green eyed monster raises it's ugly head again!!

Bad sportsmanship it ment for the school not the kids if he or others could't or should't of played why didn't the school play kids that could play why even show up if your going to make excuses.

When you look at the whole comp, i think that TSS should've won the tournament. I saw them have a totally off-game against BSHS with a little help of some terrible refs and apparently they beat them a week earlier by 40. They also beat mountain creek by 20 when JPC only won by 6. I feel pretty bad for them as they usually run really hard and play as a team but thats what one loss can do. As for the final, how did JPC lose? i heard some of their top players were benched? will they still go to nationals?

Saw a lot of the Div 2 down at Beenleigh and have to agree with what has been posted about Mitch Mc. An absolute champ with a fantastic outlook on team b-ball.

Quite a few teams down to 6 & 7 players by Sunday arvo. Congrats for finishing the tourney.

Refs - don't always agree with your calls (who does?!), but thanx for the effort with 4 or 5 games a day

congrats to bshs for the win!

also...

congrats to Jeff Henderson for some how screwing up the most talented team of players on paper to maybe have come through the school? Someone please tell me how anybody can lose a championship with so many exceptional, talented basketball players on the team.

Il tell you how.. by playing 2 players the entire game (Jim Wallis & Brendan Carroll) and by not using a team that is 12 deep.
Julio Pelaez, maybe one of the best rebounders in their team did not even touch the court
Michael hanni awesome perimeter shooter and passer that brings energy from the bench
Taylor barry awesome perimeter shooter and can drive exceptionally well
Jordan Teo played about 6 minutes the whole game.. we all know he is an unstoppable force going to the ring and has a great perimeter shot whether there is a defender there or not. Jarrod Coleman, not the smartest guy but still can grab down some key rebounds.

Then coach Henderson leaves an apparent "Australian Reserve" player on the court to shoot about 60 free throw line jumpers and knock down about 2. When will he realise that when your shots aint fallin then you dont keep shooting!

Good work Jeff for somehow destroying any reputation you had left of yourself by loosing to a raw state high team with a 15 point lead at half time. Good luck next year with Jim Wallis and BC being once again your "Star Players" bahahaha

once again congrats to bshs!

Jason Ralph is in year 9 averaging 16.5ppg at states. Imagine the kid ballin' in grade 12, that shit would be crazy. And young Mitch Roetteler is grade 9 too. Definitely hitting up Champ Schools in 2012!

True but what is his and others shooting % I mean if I put up a dozen shots I might make 2 or 3 to. Saw Ippi play a game and reckon he took most of the teams shots would have made maybe 1 or 2 3s from about 10 and the tall blond kid took a couple so did the number 7 dude. Now show me a dud that averages double points on 40% plus shooting and I would be happy cause in juniors that normally aint the case

yeah, a 40% plus shooter in juniors is very rare though. was the blonde dude number 9? coz he playd really good against us. drained a couple from downtown and was a threat everytime he caught the ball

Don't know what was up with that, really thought Sid would have pushed for Div 1, maybe he was scared that his only play - pass it to Johnno - might have had some stiffer opposition in 1st Div. I watched a few of Runcorn's games and was surprised they weren't in Div 1, won every game by about 30+
Thought there were some excellent prospects for future tournaments with Ralph & Roetller, as well as at least 5 year 10 players in JPCs 2nd team; Cody, Roger Morris, Dylan D, George & Jordan Plummeridge. (Thought Liam also played exceptionally well for a player that couldn't get selected in SW's Metro team???)
Still getting over the losses from TSS & JPC against BSHS - must have been that school spirit everyone keeps talking about, cos I thought both JPC & TSS should have come away with wins...

BSHS are in good stead for next year, as only andy and tom won't be there.
(Ethan never plays bcoz he doesn't have commitment towards the team)

but bshs should go alright next year, with 10 players continuing from this years team.
notably Agon Hafuzi, Nick Chia, Alex Watson, The fob twins alphonso and josef, Cade Towers, Luke Oudendyk, Justin Schultz

how many are returning from TSS, and JPC?

I have a few comments to make from things ive seen written on this forum regarding schools

a) Garret Scheibner - The kid is tough as nails, he is one of the elite players in this state and thats why he gets to wear the green and gold.
I dont understand why we, as a basketball community persist in trying to bring down those that are succeeding.
In any other sport, if you wear the green and gold you are are put on a pedestal. You are the benchmark. Pull yours heads in and give the kid credit.

b) Hendo's coaching - So not all coaches get it right, the art to most teams is depth. That said you play your guns when you need results. Hanni is an average player. Couldnt even crack the just gone Brisbane Metro team, sure he can hit a spot jumper but cant guard a chair. Teo is a tough one, athletic as all hell, but so inconsistent. Is that a risk you take in a final? I have faith Hendo knew best. I am a big believer though you dont get better if you stop shooting the ball, especially if you are a scorer. keep shooting the shot will come. Sure you may slow down on any given night, but you dont give up.

Congrats to State high... better team won on the night - and thats why we all love this game

I don't no why everyone is saying that JPC & TSS should of won against BSHS. Yes they both have stack sides and are much older, but when you look at BSHS starting 5 they had Andy which was money all game, Tom who was steady old him, the two NZ U18 twins Alfonso & Josef who are very strong rugby players & rising star Grade 9 Cayden. No offence but TSS were thinking that it was going to be a walk in the park after beating BSHS the week before by 40 points & and JPC are show off's in there warm ups the way they dunk, I didn't see it in the game through. And yes BSHS are going to represent QLD in the Australian School Championships in Newcastle this year.

Well done BSHS.
