Spartans & Emus Join to Support Fire & Flood Appeal

The Southern Districts Basketball Association has answered the SOS from their fellow Queenslanders up in the flood ravaged northern region and their friends in Country Victoria who have battled the latest fires and disaster by announcing a three game series between their very own South East Australian Basketball League team, the Brisbane Spartans and the Australian Emus (Under 19 men) in late February 2009.

In 2007 the Australian Emus finished 5th in the rankings and had the Spartans very own, Chris Goulding represent his country.

The 2009 Australian Emus, who will travel to New Zealand in July for the FIBA World Championships, will be comprised from the current crop of students at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) dominated by Queenslanders.

The AIS squad currently includes Queenslanders from Townsville, Logan, Maroochydore, Cairns, Southern Districts and Brisbane all vying for a spot in the twelve man team who will take on powerhouse Nations such as the USA, China, Canada and Greece, and with so many Queenslanders, it was fitting to play the three game series in Brisbane.

The Australian Emus wanted the very best preparation possible and felt it was going to done best in Brisbane against the Spartans coached by National Basketball League and Australian Coach, Bruce Palmer. The games will be played on Friday 27th February, Saturday 28th February and Sunday 1st March at the Rowland Cowan Stadium at the Clem Jones Youth Centre in Carina with all proceeds being donated to the fire and flood appeals respectively.

“We wanted to do something for both our northern neighbours in Queensland and our Victorian countrymen, who are both suffering so much” offered Allan Ladewig, General Manager of the Spartans. “We knew we had the series planned so it was a given that the funds from the games should be passed on to those who need the support. The Association is proud to able to assist as we know so many others are”.

The entrance for the three games will be a donation with all funds going to both appeals. Corporate seating is available and those requiring additional information need to contact the Association direct on 3398 2790. All three games are expected to have full houses.

The series will give the Brisbane community and basketball lovers in general the opportunity to watch the very best young players in the Nation play. Due to the World Championships being played in July, the AIS SEABL team will not be coming to Brisbane for a regular season game which they do every year against the Brisbane Spartans.

“I would urge everyone to come down for two good reasons. One, to support the victims from the fire and floods, and secondly because this is really the only opportunity to see these young talented boys play right here in Brisbane this year,” Spartans head coach Bruce Palmer said.

The FIBA World Championships will gather the world’s top talent in New Zealand and this will include 12 of these superstar players in the making.

Many of today’s stars such as our very own Andrew Bogut, Linas Kleiza, Jose Berrea, Vince Carter and many others have made their international debuts in this competition. The talent at display will be incredible and the Brisbane basketball community can look forward to the most exciting players basketball has to offer.

Excuse me, but 'Brisbane Spartans' ????

Can't imagine too many people being happy about that. Fred Van Dongen would be ripping out what little hair he has left.

Guys lets focus on what Districts are trying to do. Help where they and the basketball community can and give Brisbane a chance to see the future stars in action. No one owns the name Brisbane and if it helps sell our sport to sponsors and media etc then what is wrong with it. More we get noticed the better for everyone.
Basketballers need to do the right thing by supporting those less fortunate then themselves. Here is a great chance to do that while supporting and watching some great basketball.

I think the 'Brisbane' move will cause disenchantment amongst supporters, and would perhaps do more harm than good.

I also can't imagine Graeme Harding bellowing out "ANNNNNNNND NOW THE LINEUP FOR YOUR .... BRISBANE SPARTANS !!!" Yuck.

Have to agree for once Alan. The missus and I sent our coupla hundred off yesterday (nothin like the half mill from the Kidman-Urbans but then we arent as pretty or as good a guitar players.) Definately be up to see some excellent basketball (the Emus go OFF!...and theres a heap of QLDers in there) and help out the victims of the ravages of this amazing land we inhabit. While your at it can you breath some sense into these folk who are looking to kick our Northern people when their spirits are down by trying to have the Cairns Classics cancelled? Making them and their kids feel like some sort of disease ridden primitives is pretty un-Australian I reckon. Sure stay home if your scared, your choice, but dont agitate to have evryone else share your paranoia.
How many tickets going on sale?

That is the way we should all be thinking. Tickets will be at door on the nights. While we expect a lot of people as BQJBC is running on the Saturday night we do not see numbers being an issue. This will be the only chance to see these guys and I think they can get the job done. We have had many of them here training at Carina over last few days and they look good. Who ever thought that so many greats would come through in the one era from Queensland. Time to enjoy.

As far as the games in the north go my personal oppinion is that in life we all take risks. If we do not we do not ever cross over to the other side of the hill. I think people need to be smart with how they go about things but both cairns and townsville will be great events. I am looking forward to Townsvile and after that Ipswich.

As far as Boss Playa goes the only person here being devisive is you. Many of the BBI people understand what is happening and where we are headed. A lot have said they will even attend the games now as they feel part of what is happening. Maybe in the not so distant future we may even have the Brisbane Spartans playing SEABL as a joint effort with BBI and Districts then competing in the QABL. All we need do is talk and anything is possible. In all fairness given the team that has been assembled they could be called the South Queensland Spartans as many of the better players have or wil sign over next two weeks.

The official launch for new name is February 25th and will be a media event.

Back to the reason for original post guys lets support the future and right now that is the Australian Emues as they prepare for world championship. Part of this is playing the Brisbane Spartans with ALL MONIES going to Fire and Flood appeals.

Goulding’s Back For 3-game Series Against AIS

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Brisbane Spartans has received a boost with confirmation star guard Chris Goulding will return to Brisbane this weekend ahead of their three game series against the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) at Carina Basketball Stadium.

Goulding who was forced to make the move west to play for the Perth Wildcats after the demise of the Brisbane Bullets, initially signed a contract as a development player, a position was all too familiar with in Brisbane for the previous two seasons.

Early in the 2008/09 NBL season, Goulding didn’t see a lot of court time, however over the past few rounds Goulding was given the opportunity he was craving and didn’t let down.

With last week’s shock first round loss in the NBL playoffs to a hot Townsville Crocodiles team, his services in Perth is over for the season. While discussions for the coming seasons are underway, Goulding is allowed to return home and will play this weekend against the AIS.

“It’s fantastic news,” Spartans head coach Bruce Palmer said. “Chris is a local junior, he is explosive and very entertaining to watch. His availability to play this weekend will only add to the already impressive show-piece this will turn out to be,” he added.

The AIS was looking to sharpen themselves for the upcoming SEABL season but more importantly, prepare to the Under 19 World Championships to be held in July 2009 in New Zealand and with eight AIS athletes hailing from Queensland, it was appropriate to play the games in Brisbane.

Because the World Championships are being held this year, the AIS will not travel to Brisbane for a regular season SEABL game, so when the opportunity presented itself, the Spartans grabbed it with both hands.

Game one on Friday and game two on Saturday will both tip off at 7:30pm with Sunday’s game three tipping off at 2pm with all games being played at the Carina Basketball Stadium.

The series has been dubbed “The Fire & Flood Appeal Series” with all proceeds from all three games being donated directly to both funds respectively.

Brisbane Spartans – Launched

Brisbane’s newest basketball teams, the Brisbane Spartans and the Brisbane Lady Spartans were officially launched in front of a packed house at the Carina Leagues Club last night.

Local and State politicians were in attendance to witness the historic launch and throw their support behind the name change and the Association in its new direction. Past Spartans greats were on hand also, including Olympian Trish Cochrem, Scott Lloyd and Paul Rasmussen.

“It’s a historic moment, so we wanted the people who made us what we are today to be there,” Spartans General manager Allan Ladewig said.

Naming right’s sponsors of both teams, Arrow Caravans & Towbars and the Carina Leagues Club, Chief Executives were both on hand to introduce the teams and present the players with their 2009 uniform. Scott Lloyd, who wore the #9 singlet, personally presented the 2009 #9 singlet to Ash Cannan a former NBL star who has joined the ranks for the coming season.

With the unfortunate demise of the Brisbane Bullets, the former Southern Districts Spartans felt it was appropriate to implement the name change to represent the entire city in “Australia’s Premier Winter Basketball League, the South East Australian Basketball league.

The SEABL is considered by many to be the very best level of weekly competition available behind the NBL with most teams boasting two American imports and top line NBL players and includes teams from South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, Canberra and of course, Queensland.

Not only does the name change mean the Spartans will represent the entire city of Brisbane in a National competition, it also insures all the Southern and interstate teams know exactly where the Spartans and Lady Spartans come from.

The Brisbane Spartans will embark on a three-game series against the Australian Institute of Sport this weekend at the Carina Basketball Stadium with Friday and Saturday night’s games tipping off at 7:30pm and Sunday’s game tipping off at 2pm with all proceeds being donated to the Fire and Flood Appeals.

What were the scores from Friday and Saturday night? How about a few recaps :)

Didn't see fri or sat night's games which I'm sure were probably better quality, fatigue seemed to play a part on Sunday as well as Vandy, Cannan and Demos (I assume he's still playing for Districts despite Bubbles being back?). AIS got up by about 10. Jorden Page ran the 1 very well and got the bigs quality looks inside then took over the 4th with his scoring, Delladova killed it from the perimeter! That kid is awesome, plays great d and runs the 1 well too, keep hearing about the 3 kids going to St. Marys and Brock going to Washington State, anyone know what Delladova is doing? Other than those 2 Young played hard but missed alot of shots around the hoop n Motum n Saleich were fairly quiet, who's number 5 for the AIS with the surfy blonde hair n the cross tat on his wrist? Big fan of that kid, gets after it on D and does a great job n plays like a very controlled guard n takes the right options on O, like his game. Spartans were lead by Thalo who was his usual self including all the theatrics. Was very tough to stop going to the hoop n inside the paint n would have got them for 20 odd, don't know if he had an incident with Brock in one of the prior games or he just decided to go at it but decided to try n niggle Brock as much as possible n the play where he dragged Brock to the ground then cried about a foul just made him look like a clown lol, but like I said typical Thao. Aucoin killed them hit about 4 triple's and imposed his presence in the key, and Simon Taylor took ALOT of shots but was aggressive n kept the AIS boys on their toes n frustrated the back-up point guard on D while Page was on the bench. Taylor n Aucoin would have had around 20 as well, Andrew Taylor played a nice little cameo and Jeff Morton had a typical coming down the lane get the f out of my way massive dunk, was nice typical Morton dunk. Bubbles played but not much maybe 12-14 minutes, he will be their heart n soul though still hit a couple of tough shots as a reminder that he is such a freaky scorer and after averaging 26. something last year I'm sure he will replicate that this year and he has bulked up big time n looks like he has added some other bits n pieces to his game. Looks like Matty E may not play this much though with Cannan n Thalo there which would be a shame, he's such a great guy to have on your team like last year when they had Gibbo Williamson Bubbles n Vandy n Edmonds just played the 4 n did all the dirty work. Anyway that's enough for me, interested to see how the Spartans go this year, IMHO I can't see them doing better than they have the last 2 years but time will tell...

Brisbane Spartans Happy with Preparation

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Brisbane Spartans have had the best possible preparation to tip off their 2009 SEABL campaign with a three game series against the Australian Institute of Sport at Carina Basketball Stadium over the weekend.

In game one, on Friday night, the Spartans out lasted the AIS in a 128 – 110 win in front of a packed crowd.

Spartans new recruits Ash Cannan (South Dragons) and Tyson Demos (Gold Coast Blaze) chipped in with 26 and 23 points respectively, while Greg Vanderjagt added 20 points and grabbed 18 rebounds.

For the AIS, Brisbane’s Brock Motum lead the way with 26 points while Western Australian Cody Ellis chipped in 22 off the bench.

On Saturday night, the AIS turned things around and were headed towards handing the Spartans a heavy loss on their home floor. Bursting out of the blocks the AIS took a commanding lead throughout the second and third quarter where the lead ballooned out to as much as 29 points before the Spartans comeback began.

However, the AIS help off to record a seven-point win, 112 – 105.

Last week’s Under 20 National Championship MVP, Jordan page lead the way with 23 points including a handful of devastating “in your face” three point bombs. He was well supported by Ryan Broekoff with 14, while Cody Ellis added 12 points.

For the Spartans, Ash Cannan once again lead the way with 27 points with Greg Vanderjagt having another double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. One of the Spartans favorite sons, Chris Goulding found his feet after a long flight from Perth to add in 19 points.

On Sunday, in sweltering conditions, the AIS once again duplicated their efforts on Saturday night to surprise a lethargic Spartans outfit and take a commanding lead in the first quarter.

Spartans big men, Vanderjagt and Cannan were rested however Thalo Green stepped up and mounted a comeback, however, like the night before, the Spartans fell agonizingly short of a series win.

“We were flat and tired today, they are young and fit. No excuses though, we were beaten by a very good team and they will do us proud at the World Champs later this year,” Spartans head coach Bruce Palmer said.

“The things we have gained through this exercise have been invaluable to our preparations for the up coming season,” he added.

After team introductions, the Spartans took the opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous achievements of seven Queenslanders from the traveling AIS team who were recently crowned Under 20 National Champions and thank AIS head coach Marty Clarke and his assistant Paul Gorris for their direction in the development of these players.

“We are extremely proud of what these boys have done and it’s a result of their direction right now. It just proves that the system they are in right now (AIS) is legit,” Palmer concluded.

The Spartans have two more pre season hit outs against Brisbane Capitals and Maroochydore Clippers before their first official SEABL game on Saturday 14 March 2009 at Carina Basketball stadium tipping off at 6pm.

I dont know how much of the game you watched but Motum was very impressive all 3 games,Young made many a shot under the basket unless he was hacked ,Delladova hit abot 3 3`s from about 10 attempts Page was hot from the 3 point line like the previous 2 games ,Salecich was quiet while sitting behind the AIS bench with Tunks both still carrying injuries from nationals and both did not play this weekend ,sounds like you have written a post from second hand news you clown.

Page ,Delladova & Young are going to St Mary`s
Motum to Wasdhington State
Ellis & Salecich to St Louis
Tunks to Colorado
Brochoff to Valperasio

Congrats to Coach Palmer and the Spartans association on the aknowledgement they paid to the very successful u/20`s mens team considering 8 of the 10 were at the game on Sunday you would have thought QLD basketball would have had someone there to congratulate the boys on behalf of QLD Basketball, oh my bad we cant have that it was played at Spartans , and they wonder why Basketball is not going any where ,
Well done to Spartans to bring up the AIS it was great to see these very talented kids play and it also gives young players the inspiration to strive to get to this level and to see what the level is to be Elite ,well done to all the AIS coaches and players it was a privelege to watch.
I hope this might become a annual event regardless if there is no QLD kid involved ,its a great spectacle ,
Well done Spartans .

Hi HIM,

Couple of things...

Goulding is contractually obliged to play in the western australian league in the off-season, so i don't think you'll be seeing him too much this year, which will be a shame.

Christian was very quiet for the AIS as you pointed out. This was because he didn't play. He has a stress fracture in his foot and is out for a couple of weeks.

The guy with surfie hair is Hugh Greenwood from Tasmania.

The spartans team have a few more players up their sleeve though who did not play on the weekend. The season isn't too far away so i expect that you'll hear a few things announced in the coming weeks...

Shame Christian didnt get to play at Spartans home venue. During Nationals he was probably the most consistent all round until he got crook. (He was down to about 120% then...!)
You'll see Hugh's Dad sometimes on TV (and Hugh when he's home) doing whale rescues off the Tassie coast...dangerous job?
Bruce doesnt phase his teams season to win the pre-season hit outs. Doesnt take anything away from the AIS as I'm suspecting they play just as good as they need to to win, but you can be sure he has a dozen sets and 3 or 4 defences that nobody will see until they play them.

MEDIA RELEASE

Spartans Think PINK

The Carina Leagues Club Brisbane Lady Spartans and The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Brisbane Spartans Mens teams have both continued with their tremendous community support, and will wear PINK uniforms for all their SEABL games in May 2009 in support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

In a SEABL first, the specially designed PINK basketball uniforms will be worn by all Spartans men and women players for road games in Canberra, Nunawading, Knox, Albury/Wodonga, Bendigo and Ballarat and home games against Sandringham, Knox, Mt Gambier and Dandenong.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation is the leading community-funded organization in Australia raising money for research into the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Foundation recently achieved a new milestone having now funded $55 million across 230 research programs since 1994.

The Brisbane Lady Spartans play in Bendigo and Ballart, while the Brisbane Spartans men play Canberra Gunners and the Australian Institute of Sport in the first weekend of May and all Spartans will be wearing PINK. The Brisbane fans will get their first taste of the PINK on Saturday 9 May when they return to take on Sandringham.

“I had contacted the SEABL office earlier in the year with the idea,” Spartans Operations Manager Joe Tertzakian said. “They approved it and fully support the initiative. Providing no other team wears PINK uniforms, we will be right for the entire month as no team will clash with the PINK,” he concluded.

The Spartans will officially launch the initiative at their home game on Saturday 25 April with a NBCF Representative making the announcement and a preview of the PINK uniforms all Spartans players will wear for the month will be unveiled.

Everyone is encouraged to support this historic event and great cause, which will be coupled with a special ANZAC DAY pre-game presentation.

Lady Spartans tip off at 6pm with the Spartans men starting at 8pm
