View Full Version : Sports Direction
This message is meant to generate discussion about where we want to be in ten years. For those not aware in Victoria there is a massive workshop taking place with delegates from all over Australia. At this meeting stadium managers are getting together to try and set the direction for where our sport should be by 2030.
Issues I see as important may seem unimportant to others and that is fine. But someone has to start the ball rolling.
1. Such a large state How do do reduce travel costs
2. Sports profile Great in country and up north but what do we do to get noticed in the south
3. Administration of sport Need to stop them and us mentality
4. Stadiums getting older This will become huge in next 10 years. Really only the country centres are getting funding from Government. All stadiums need to be air-conditioned.
5. Player development What are our pathways
6. History We have no recorded history that encourages tradition in the south that I am aware of. We need to think football mentality.
7. Pathways What is our pathway that can enable every player from every centre to at least be able to get to the top.
8. Senior competitions Think what you want we are failing no matter what league we are in.
9. Costs Basketball is not expensive when compared to other sports and what is requird to compete but it needs to be lower if we are to attract the athletes that we want.
10. Leadership How do we attract the Frank Lowrie's to our sport. How do we get them involved.
All isues I think need to be thought about. It is time to start getting serious about the future. Those who will constantly bring up the past need to be pushed aside. We need everyone involved in the future not just those that are in favour.
Maybe time for people to start listing what is happening in various Associations so we can start to see what is working and what is not.
Time for the next generation to step up to the plate.

"Basketball is not expensive"
Are you kidding me??
For juniors playing representative level it is very expensive, especially for those in the north - two trips south for classic tournaments to every one trip north.
Add on to that the regional tournaments...
And Champion school tournaments...
And National Schools should they be so lucky!
Add all those trips up and multiply x 2 or 3 or 4 however many children you have playing at that level, not to mention if one or two parents attend as well - it is very expensive!!

All you need do is cut back on what the committment is. Yes it is expensive if you want all of those things. I want to travel overseas every year but I can not. Please do not blame the sport for your elected lifestyle. My daughter did both netball and basketball at elite level but we removed schools from the choices due to additional costs.
The sport played for social activity is not expensive. We just make it so by refusing to simply say no to doing everything. And we wonder why we are now talking about a recession. No one seems to know when to say no.

Some good points to ponder.
Costs. Whilst b-ball appears to be cheaper, I'm not sure this is the case compared to other sports across the whole year. Most football codes have junior fees of $300 all up. My sons b-ball fees are about $60 to the local club, plus another $60 to BQ. Then its $10 a game. He'd play at least 15-20 club games a year. Add rep ball - another 14 games minimum at $10. Starting to add up - and havn't started on the "going to classics costs", shoes etc.
Them Vs Us. Agreed a common goal is the aim. I know politics abounds in most sports, but SEQ ball seems to have a lot of folk with long memories and longer knives.
Stadiums. Most are on the verge of heritage listing (and falling down). $60mil for Carrara footy ground. How far would that go for b-ball? I'd rather see any significant governemnt coin go towards stadiums at grass roots level, than propping up a Bullets Mk II. BBI, Spartans, Redlands PCYC for starters need substantial work/replacing.
Pathways: Partic for refs. They get panned every week & from what I've heard get paid peanuts. Think the sport needs a big re-think on almost condoning the theatrical spray coaches are permitted to give refs. It's on tv with the NBA, you see it at NBL & QABL level & eventually it filters down to U16 & U12 coaches. I'd vote for zero tolerance by the refs.
Pathways. Coaches & players. Is it just me or are too many coaching for the here and now, and not looking at development over a longer term. Its a get results immediately or your gawn mentality, which i'm not sure is good long term.
Schools: When was the last time a basketballer or b-ball program visited a school? certainly not in our area. Local clubs, plus a statewide coordinated prgram needed. Get'em early - primary school similar to the AFL Auskick program (so BIG sponsorship required)

Hahahaha!!! Just about everything there could have been avoided with competent ethical transparent management. Management with some knowledge experience and ability would be a start but management with a vision for the sport and its members not just a puppet to do the personal bidding of their 'sponsor' into the job. Real business people just laugh at the sideshow that is Basketball Queensland and get as far away from it as they can. That post is hilarious!!

Not wanting to get into a debate with you but if you feel this is all true then now is your chance to step up and start making the changes that are required. It is all so easy to sit back and snipe about how or why things happened but unless you are there you never really know the full facts. What are you going to do to make a difference? What can you do to make things better? No lectures just simple questions. If you want change then now is the time to go after it at all levels. The people at BBI have spoken and will now move in a new direction one would expect. Good luck to Fred and crew. Murmours starting starting that a lot of Associations are looking at what they do well and what they can do better. That is the way it should be. Lets stop being negative and start working together to get a structure that will work and attract the people we want.

Dont think they were talking about BBI there. BBI didnt put the BQ staff in place.

It is the Associations such as BBI and 25 other Associations that do put the management of our sport in place. Next election coming soon. They in turn employ who they feel can best do the job. Want change you need to start at the top within your own Association to ensure they make the next level up answerable.
We all have private views about who does and does not do a good job. That is the nature of the beast. As far as BBI goes the clubs in a majority wanted change and voted to get it. That is how the system works. Trouble is that most people are not willing to do the hard yards in preparation to get ready to enable change. Fred and his crew were and will reap the rewards.
A quote from someone (not Fred) at BBI just today. "You sure do make enemies when you get things done". hahahahah
Welcome to the real world guys. Still looking for positive people to move our sport forward.

Excellent point about the schools. Get more kids playing by having seabl, qabl, wnbl & in the future nbl players visiting/coaching the school teams. If the kids are intrested in playing they just might get their parents down to watch some seabl, qbl etc games.Who knows some of these parents could also turn out to be potential sponsors as well as paying for their tickets at the door. If the associations have a larger pool of players to select & develop from it should improve their rep teams. I feel it should be compulsary for each seabl, qbl etc player to help out as much as they can with junior development, shit I remember Cal Bruton, Shane Heal, Robert Sibley coming to my schools so if they can do it I don't see why the current players can't. Basketball isn't as popular with supporters or sponsors as other sports so all that are involved in the game need to do our bit to change that. Anyone got any comments on my thoughts?

The answer is schools but who should be doing it. Most players in the QBL have jobs so do not have the time. Also if you are to do it right those that do need to be trained in how best to do it. Also as far as schools go it needs to be more targeted then shot gun approach. A lot of valuable resources will go down the drain if we do not make sure the school has intent or is doing a basketball program. SChools needs to be co-ordinated and I am not sure who by.
Sponsors are something else. They are not that easy to get given how little media coverage they get in the south. In the central and north they do get value for dollar which is why the QBL programs are stronger there. You are right about parents becoming sponsors but we need to make sure that when we do attract them they want to stay. Can anyone tell me who are the major sponsors of the following Associations. If you can then we are doing better then we think but my guess is most will not have a clue.
Brisbane
Northside
Southern Districts
Basketball Queensland
Gold Coast
Ipswich
Toowoomba
Logan
South West Metro
Maroochydore
Caboolture
Caloundra
Bundaberg
Rockhampton
This is a bit of a trick question as I do not think any of the ose listed above have one. Yes they do have sposnors to the QBL (maybe) so there in lies the problem. Our sport has no identity for which a sponsor would want to brand.
Still pass n the challenge of listing the major sponsors for each program.

Ever wondered why major sponsors like the brewing companies, QLD Government Depts. (Health/Transport/Youth/Facilities etc), Mining companies, Property Developers, QLD Sports Foundation have not seen Basketball in QLD as a viable credible sponsorship option?

I think basketball qld are doing a good job. The QBL is strong as always an looks to be another exciting year. Sux there is no nationals so qld cant defend their back to back mens and womens national titles. Guess they stay champs forever lol

So why is that do you think. If we are a player within the sporting industry who is responsible for the current situation and what can we do to change things around. Maybe we are just to easily pleased which is why we accept a lesser standard.

OK fair point thatsome of the players have full time commintments but that shouldn't stop them from helping out in other ways. They should support the sport that supports them especially the players thatget paid to play. If basketball becomes more popular they will be the first ones to benefit financially.

Thats fantastic! Are you a sports industry heavyweight, Government Department head or senior Marketing and Advertising executive? If so, please print your contacts and I'm sure one of BQ dynamic marketing and managerial staff will be on your doorstep Monday morning with a comprehensive 3-5 year sponsorship proposal complete with growth estimates, product enhancement and full portfolio of residual community benefits!
I'd say probably not if your so easily pleased and tunnel visioned that you think the QBL is a strong and exciting indication of the future health of the sport in Queensland. Dont mean to sound personal either mate. Just grieve for the sport and its future when the most the membership expects from their peak body is a user pays competition that anyone with a huge cheque book can give a good shake. The question is just what is left for the game its members and future if and when those with the cheque books move to greener pastures?
