Cairns was beaten by Townsville by 70 points last month , not sure how you worked 2nd place out of that.
All will be revealed tomorrow I suppose.

1. GOLD COAST
2. TOWNSVILLE
3. SPARTANS
GOLD COAST won rep season now time to win classics..
Some mixed results from first day of the girls comp. Logan beat Spartans as did Townsville, and Ippy over RB. Long way to go for all teams. But Spartans will struggle to make final 4 with 2 early losses. Bit of a shock really. Good luck to you all.
Go Logan!!!!!!!:D

What a first day!! How many games went into overtime? These girls are giving the crowd a wonderful show of basketball. Isn't great when you get caught up in not only in your own teams games but other teams as well!! Both divisions seem to be excelling. Godd job to all the girls and coaching staff.

1- T'ville
2- Goldy
3- Ipswich - (home crowds)
After the pool rounds completed today it is clear Townsville and GC are the favourites to play the final, but anything can happen in Semi finals. Logan threw alot of ball away tonight V Townsville and would have really given them a crack if they could control the ball. All in all I think they will push GC to the end and maybe get a final spot V Townsville. Townsville have a good alround team and I would put them as favourites to take out classics at this point. But GC finals experience is invaluable in big games.
Go Logan!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that all teams are performing well this round of classics,
have had some big turn arounds aswell , logan coming 6th in normal rep season, too now beating spartans, maroochydore and northside. I think its the logan teams time to shine at the moment , their stronger players being Bridget Obrien, Manaha Tautuhi, Ashleigh Joyce and Maggie pitt, Lets see how they go in the 2nd semi finals against goldcoast.
Does anyone have thoughts on who will make under 15 developement squad?

what about the mighty ipswich????? dont underestimate the underdogs!!!!
Wow Great semis today from all teams involved. 1 decided in OT and the other late in the fourth qtr. Townsville and Gold Coast should be proud of them selves as they were beaten by 2 rampaging teams.
Ipswich I believe (rumour only)made some lineup changes before classics and now have 2 really solid guards feeding their skillful bigs, which scoried at will in the OT period.
Logans defencive hussle caught GC off guard today, the heart shown by the Logan girls to battle back from a 13 point first qtr deficit was inspiring.
Predictions for tomorrows result?
GO LOGAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No one expected Ipswich to end up wining the Classics after not doing as well as they should have all season. They did play well and a much deserved win!
The refs for the finals were great !

actually, all Ipswich did was put the hard yards in, training 3 times a week , which was THE ORIGINAL team, and no changes were made. Give credit when credit is earned.

As one of the main organisers for the Classics I hope that everyone had a good time, felt welcome and took away some good memories. As for the basketball played over the last couple of days what can you say??? Great talent and a big plus to all the girls and coaching staff. Thanks for all the enjoyable games we got to watch.

when does the development squad get announced? does it include bottom age players?
What a great effort both teams put in to get to the final. Very proud of both teams for knocking out the Favourites for the tournament.
Townsville , Logan and the champs (Ipswich) are off on a little adventure to Perth for the Nationals. Congrats to you all. I'm sure there will be lots of hard work at training to be done over the next 4 mths.
I hope that the u15 selectors dont ignore some of the new and upcoming stars in our mix, they might not score all the points in a team offencively but man I saw some fantastic defence players out on all the courts this week. And Im sure any coach would love to have strong and quick bigs to scare the crap out of the southern teams. 15 from Ippy was great as was 10 from Logan (not as big but twice as tough). The logan girls really knew how to read each other in D and switched on screens with no interuption or defensive lapse. It was great to see such young players with a great defensive scense.
All credit goes to Ippy on the win as it was well deserved and It was a good specticle to watch.
PS> Good to see the Logan Thunder Ladies there to award the girls.
Thanks Ipswich for a great classics!!!!!!!:hifive:

Last year there were 2 or 3 bottom age players in the squad of 30+ girls. One bottom age player made the final cut and was named as a reserve to the team.
There were some standout bottom age players this year, so I would be surprised if they didn't make the train on squad.

I see in the latest BA newsletter that at this years U14 Nationals they will be playing a new 24 second rule where the 24 second clock doesn't start until the ball enters the front court. The rule is supposed to encourage better offencive opportunities. How do others feel about the rule.

So it is effectively a 32 second shot clock , 8 seconds to get out of the back court + 24 in the front.
I think that the "modern game" is moving away from the structured offences that we used to see ie lots of screening and cutting through the key , where now it is more isolate and shoot within 2 or 3 passes of the offence commencing.
Will coaches change their offences this late in the year, I dont think so. My opinion not really worth the trouble.

Wipes out all that time working on a full court press adding another 8 seconds to the shot clock. American rules.

This side (including reserves) is obviously picked to develop talls, as I can count up to five girls that are there because of height not talent.

How disscusting that a development program starts looking for tall kids for the future of our basketball to develop them. Seeing basketball is about height more than anything else. If you love playing that great play club but if you don't have height leave development for the above average height kids. Skill will come. To much money and time is spent in kids who later don't do anything with basketball later because they don't have height.

What I said was an observation and not meant to be an insult. This side does not contain the 10 best performed girls of the season or the camps. It contains a lot of tall girls whose skills may or may not come later.

Its all about development a this stage of the game, there are kids in that squad that would have trouble getting into a Premier League Squad let alone the run on team.
There are a fairly solid group of 6 or 7 really talented kids and the others are projects.
But if you do not give them a go and see if there is any potential to be realised you will only get criticised at a later time.
Also interesting that no bottom age kids made the last 15 and as always one association seems to have a disproportionate representation at the end of the day.

Is there any point in trying to develop tall players that can't make a first side or get their team into PL despite having the physical advantage of being tall? Imo would be better off developing girls who have shown some talent with good defensive, shooting or passing skills.

You can't teach height. All those other things you can teach the taller girls with time, and then you have tall skilled players.
Same goes for pure athleticism, can't be taught. Really it's the same reason Gold Coast AFL would pay Karmichael Hunt $1Mill a year without seeing him play AFL.
Taller kids are often more awkward as they are trying to come to grips with the extra size. Maby of the Best Players at Pro Level are tall and very average at 14yrs of age.

I agree that our sport is about height and it must developed. However I also believe that these development squads should be about developing players from 1 to 5 if they show some ability. Not just picking a majority of tall players and hope they acquire the skills somewhere down the track.

Just want to see what parents thoughts about topic below. Is it something you would take your kids to on a weekly basis:
Parent:
I wish there was somewhere on a Sunday someone would start up a development program for kids to do a four hour session grade kids not by age but by their skill so they have to work themselves up to the next level. Doesn't matter what club they are from work on skills play them in teams I would pay and travel to locations for my kids to do this and I know alot of other parents who would do the same
Coach:
While I think its a great idea, and the idea is sure to been tried before. It is nearl impossible to organise. Try find the coachs to start. You would need a 'name coach' to attract the parents to it. If I put my hand up and said I would run something like this we would have about 20 kids, lol. But if Peter Pollock or Steve Edwards or the like said they would do it then maybe you would get 80.
You would never get Gov funding for a program like this as they would direct us back to BQ, good luck there.....
If you want to talk more about this send me an email. I have some ideas I'd share with you.

I'm sure the parents of all those average-height/athletic kids who were "selected" for the squad (almost 50 kids wasn't it!) will appreciate subsidising the training for those deemed to be potentially genetically superior (regardless of their current skills)! It's also nice how some posters on this site think that only tall kids should be blessed with BQ development programs! Do they mean the kids who are tall at 13 y.o., or the ones they think will grow to be 6'9"?

The reason people are writing is to get the Club Associations to start up something like this something extra for the kids. I don't see whats wrong with that? Could only benefit Qld basketball. Bring in more kids into the clubs at any age.

Now you know how it feels like for the kids who are being told all the time if you make it its only because of your height. Short kids and parents don't see past the height because they are slower and not as athletic because of it. Qld for years now has only looked at a certain type that why we get our asses kicked each year by other states because they don't.
For those that are not aware Spartans will be starting a series of clinics starting on Sunday mornings in mid-September covering a lot of areas.
The new shooting machine will be involved in the shooters program and they will also be doing a big kids program plus many more.
You will need to go to the website www.sdspartans.basketball.net.au in September to access the exact details but most programs will be 5 week blocks for approx $75. Coaching staff will be of quality and numbers limited per program to esnure quality.

Yes, there are those coach's out there. And its not all about money. There are about 5/6 coaches doing this in our club at no cost to the parent apart from court fees. Particularly with their club team kids. Not neccessarily with just rep players.
Good luck to the 3 Qld teams heading to Perth at the end of the week for Nationals.
Just do yourselves proud and never give up. Oh and Have FUN!!!!!!!!

Dear Coach Billy
Just a tip from someone who knows. Dont get in a basketball debate with Pete Pollock. The guy has forgotten more about coaching kids basketball than your likely to learn in your entire career. If you were willing to drop the flambouyance and humbly sit in on his sessions or work with him with a group someone might take your "business" proposal seriously...in a decade or so.
The tipster.

FYI
I am not remotely iterested in entering a debate with the above mentioned and it was also not a business proposal, I am not even coaching rep this year due to my own work commitments, so why would I want to be entering into a thankless, overly critisised business of the coaching basketball? I am not being flamboyant and am humbly sitting here in awe of the great Peter Pollock. (I mean that genuinly not sarcastically)
It was a discussion I entered into with a parent that they have decided to partially quote me in their own search for somebody to help their own child out. I do however, know of a coach who would have been interested in the set up of something and put the feelers out for them. This person is a far better coach than me and I have spent the last 3 years learning and developing my own skills through watching and learning.
I am a volunteer like the rest of us inexperienced coachs who so often are bullied out of rolls because we may not be good enough, or dont coach the same way as someone else. But horses for courses, I give everything I do 110% and I am happy with my results as a coach, seeing as I do have limited experience.
Thank you for your concern.

Keep up the good work
You will find that outside redlands most people will sit back and be critical of your suggestions, even the coaches that have been coaching forever. They will be wary of change because they are set in there own ways or be afraid of upsetting parents of current rep players because there might be to much competition for their own children when it comes time for rep trials.

Point well made mate. I had completely ballsed up info on you and just made my own decision when I read your post. Apologies. Visited Redlands a couple of times last season and was impressed (and taken back) to the times when basketball was a beautiful thing and people "gave", regardless of their ability, to be part of something good where they could feel worthwhile, especially about having a positive input to the lives of young Australians. History shows the Associations that had/have that culture grow to be the powerhouses.

Bad luck Ippy, nearly a cleansweep first round for QLD. Very physical games from what I hear.
Hope all teams are enjoying their trip, all the best for the rest of the week, long way to go till you come home to the best state.

Townsville result?
Should have all 3 teams in top 16 so good result I think. Would have been nice to see at least 1 team in the top 8 though.
Anyways Im proud of my girl as I didnt expect that many wins, but happy that they have taken their opportunities and performed well.
Good luck in all remaining games!
Logan d Townsville tonight!!!!!!!! Sorry girls, your support has been great over the tourney and much appreciated by the girls. Hope the 3 teams have a win tomorrow to end a fantastic effort in Perth. GL!!!!

Just curious, but can anyone provide any insight into the gap between the QLD teams and the top teams in the tournament ?
SDBAL is now opening up the development programs to athelets from other Associations. Applications can be downloaded from our website www.sdspartans.basketball.net.au
EXPESSIONS OF INTEREST
The SDBAL is proud to announce the start of our new development programs aimed at ensuring a pathway for our juniors as they move towards the senior ranks. The pathways are for both men and women, with additional programs on offer in 2010.

Apologies, I did not REMOVE IT, rather I MOVED it to the Spartans Section as a matter of keeping the site in order rather than advertising it on every thread. I have uploaded a post similar with a link to the Spartans Section. Hopefully that is ok?
These programs are for everyone. Our sport needs a lot more in all age groups.
Thanks for fixing the problem.

im not a proffessional or anything but have watched a lot basketball over the last 5 years especially in the junior age groups. I dont think from watching the queensland teams at the nationals that there was a GAP so to speak. The Victorian teams were still fresh from their classics almost two weeks prior to nationals. The queensland classics were held april or may? Observing the games it looked like the Queensland teams just needed to warm up before they really gained momentum. This is where one of the issues lie and thats the girls playing at a top level right up to the classics because some of these other teams are just leaving queensland in the dust because they are fresh from their own competitions. I think Queensland definitely had their best chance to make top 8 this year. Ipswich were unfortunate to lose their first game to Taralgon especially after leading them at half time and also failed to bury the Rockets. These were two games that could have easily put them into the top 8 but maybe lack of nationals experience may have been the factor. Logan also just lost a couple of games that would have put them into top 8. They seem to be missing one of their playmakers from the classics but whether that would have made a difference we will never know. Townsville did well and were also unfortunate. Regardless Queensland should be proud of their achievements and hope one day Queensland will bring home the cup!!
Cheers

Logan had a 3 way tie at end of pool rounds and finished 3rd on %. None of the Qld teams have a dominant big as did the top 3 teams. 4th to 16th could have been anyones game, just unfortunate losses saw the teams relegated down. They all won their final games.
Logan lost only 3 games the whole tournament. Is that not a good result? 2 of those teams were top 6, at least.
