I saw the end of the BBI SW game it was a nail biter!!!!!!! There was no shot clock during the game. It was a different game without it. It seems all the teams have come to play with no blow outs that I know of. I think all the games will be close & there will be some more upsets to come.

Brisbane will again prove that the superior teams are from the south not the north
Top 4 has 3 south teams proving the case even more.
Brisbane won't be affected by "Home court" Supporters, refs etc.

You better hope so talking yourself up like that. Doesnt matter who comes 2nd 3rd 4th 5th when proving a case. If they dont win they bloody well should with all the 'best' competition and coaching they get. Go the North!

With 5 of the top six places going to South teams (just like last year in this age group) there is no doubt where the balance of power in this group lies.
Good luck to both teams in the final; that would be Cairns and Brisbane.

5. nick chia

9. lindsay cole

who played well:
michael demertze - hit many triples and also showed an amount of ability to get to the rack. plays tight defence but can get fouls
hayden wicks - this guy has talent. was in the mackay team last year and wasn't much of a threat but has stepped us this year to lead a pretty mediocre side.
declan starasts - proved he is one of the best bigs around. hitting medium range jumpers and dominating the post.
ian burns - had a few great games in the week. against northside, he stepped up to lead a team of 7. showed his ability to get into the lane and finish.
nick chia - played conistently throughout the week. dominating when needed and running the show also. a defensive workhorse and a great leader from brisbane.
jaryd eustace - started the week hot. nailing bombs from anywhere and backed it up throughout the tournament. showed he could finish well on the break and did a good job at the point for northside.
marc patuaka - had a number of huge games finishing on the break and through penetration. showed talent in a somewhat struggling gold coast side.
dylan d. - tried his heart out for the whole week. he made some nice moves to the rack and was able to finish.
lindsay cole - showed his athleticism in his games with some solid rebounding and provided some entertainment with some nice finishes in transition
Cody d. - got into the lane and made little jumpers. he was a force inside but seemed to save a little to much energy on defence allowing teams to rack up the points

Cody D - Couldn't defend the bigs as he was always going to be playing out of position on lbi's short team.

Um whats a state selector?? Isnt the head coach interested in who actually performs under actual match conditions in a tournament away from home etc etc or does he just choose who he's told to? One of last years sides was coached by the BQ development manager and apparently it was chosen on who was best at doing drills at practice. Maybe the new thing for the State program?

As a matter of fact there were 2 north teams in the top 6 last year and considering that north has only got 3 teams in div 1 thats a pretty good 66.6% of teams reaching the top 6. Just because south have 1000 teams doesnt make them any better then the north

When are people going to learn the classics is no place for choosing players for state teams, it is nothing and I repeat nothing like playing at Nationals. How can you see the best be the best when they in some cases play up to three games a day? Injuries, fatigue as a result of this type of tourney and in some cases average coaching can kill you, your team and the performances at a tourney like this (that to can be said about nationals). The better and or best kids will shine through in week in week out competition, training and drills will provide you the opportunity to see how they respond to your coaching, respond to your demands and what their attitude is like. So in my opinion stuff the classics as a choosing point look at premier league etc and the training sessions as they will give you a far better read on an individual for an individual position on a team.

Absolute disgrace that BQ would allow the State Coach not attend what is deemed one of the premier events of BQ calendar for Under 16 boys. Even worse that Coach could not find time to attend. What message does this send to players involved in basketball.

Why is it a disgrace? The guy is a volunteer and he has to give up time to come to the event and then to the nationals. Hasn't he seen them enough at camps and premier league etc.
I do not care what people say you know who can do what and how they will do it long before the classics.

As I assisted with the state selection (along with 4 other coaches), I can tell you that Rob made the final call and it was not just based on Classics.
Training performance, PL and SC playing performanace, potential and Classics performance were all taken into consideration.

And you've been coaching how long? Ever been to a Nationals? Ever seen one? Dont know who "Rob" is but he hasnt taken much notice of other U/16 coaches where its a real concern about how a player behaves when away from home how well they adjust to being away from the family unit how well they manage themselves with diet rest and emotions as well as fatigue when in a tournament situation and how well they eventually perform under those circumstances. How can you make a 'call" on a player when you havent seen him play out of his comfort zone and trust others to make that judgement? What is it with you Queensland guys? You were getting good there for a while but seem to be dropping off now. Good for us though.

Yep you are right, lets not choose a good coach and put in a hack because he can give the time to attend the classics. hahahahaha
As for seeing them in this type of tourney play etc the classics are NOTHING and I repeat NOTHING like a nationals. Seriously lets have the best players from this club versus the best players from this club while at Nationals it is the BEST from Vic Metro, NSW etc versus the BEST from Qld South North etc. You are kidding if you really think that the classics come with in a country mile of the nationals. Multi games in a day versus one a day, more scouting opportunities versus limited scouting.

So how do you scout them to determine the players who are going to perform best for their state team BEFORE they get to the Nationals?
Great to scout them at Nationals where its one game a day but its a bit late to be finding out about your team then isnt it? Do we have any other way to see how they play adapt and self manage than at the crappy old best of the state clubs competition? Course you could pick the kids who do the best drills at training who have the neatest haircuts who go to the right schools whose parents talk to the coach the most whose parents drive the flashest car to bring their youngster to the weekly games in style the one whose parents own the most chemist shops or who are the best financial supporters of the coaches home club but is there any other means available to select actual players than at the States supposed top competition? Just a personal observation but I would have thought the player who has the physical and mental fitness to excell under the grungy classics conditions, multiple games a day, strange food and surroundings etc is the one whose most likely to excell when it comes to the intensity and physicality of a Nationals.
BQ have probably best make up their mind also. They used to have an All State Regional Challenge which was touted as the selection trial for State. It was actually explained to the then regional delegates as being the best testing ground to see how players perform in forming teams with new players away from home etc. etc and meant to specifically be a microcosm of a Nationals for selection purposes. Sounded feasible so they went out and had to sell it to disgruntled financially stretched parents but it was accepted as having some merit for that purpose. Then someone or other got the shits with unfashionable teams winning and expecting their unfashionable players to make State, parents got pissed off when the State teams were so heavily laden with kids who did good drills at QAS but couldnt win games much, so they canned it and reverted to the Classics as the Premier All State Competition. If they are now saying that the Classics are nothing and the teams are picked at practice before the tournament then they need to make that clear to parents in these financially troubled times.
Congratulations everyone who made State, you have reached the base camp and now the assault begins. Congratulations to everyone who didnt make State. There's a lot of very good players like you who also didnt make it this time around.
p.s. Michael Jordan got cut from his high school team and I heard Andrew Bogut never made a State team.
Shouldnt buy into this but dont like smart arses from other states being able to make smart comments that are a bit close to the bone either.

For what it's worth I personally did not agree with all of the selections for QLD South this year. (Well done Nick D, Brad and Ian, you worked hard for it and especially in Ian's case added elements to your game this season to put you well in the mix for the final squad.)
However, could the no-names on this board please stop dogging ALW, who across the tournament struck me, a lowly Assistant Coach, as one of the more humble people involved in the pointy end of Div 1 and BQ selection politics. Unless you were there in the selection meetings you just don't know what they were looking for.
I am proud to be associated with Coach B and the Redlands boys. We took a couple of disappointing losses midweek but pulled it together for the last game and put in a good performance against stubborn opposition. We're in a good position to build from for next rep season.
PS. This was the "friendliest" Classics I have attended in 7 years coaching jnr rep, with all South coaches willing to have a chat about games and opposition tactics, and even the odd ref willing to try to explain points of emphasis. The interaction between our boys and the Logan lads particularly was great.

with development players in mind..... (ill throw in oscar and pittle) without those players ill go with jaryd and nick d....
see below...
starting pg - nick c
starting sg - ian b
starting sf - josh d
starting pf - jarrod g
starting c - lindsay c
b/u pg - jaryd e or oscar l
b/u sg - nick d or luke p
b/u sf - stephan h
b/u pf - declan s
b/u c - cade t
if you wanted development. James griffin would be a more likely candidate over luke.
also declan will have to start ahead of jarrod g or lindsay. if you want a starting 5 then:
pg: nick chia
sg: ian burns
sf: josh derksen
pf: jarrod gamble
c: declan starasts
bench:
pg: jaryd eustace or luke pittle
sg: oscar lin or brad saul
sf: nick dickenson or james griffin
pf: lindsay cole
c: cade towers or max q-w

For what it's worth I personally did not agree with all of the selections for QLD South this year. (Well done Nick D, Brad and Ian, you worked hard for it and especially in Ian's case added elements to your game this season to put you well in the mix for the final squad.)

The Logan boys enjoyed visiting the Redlands team being the only evening that Josh & I actually let them out! Having only 7 players tends to make your team to exhausted to do anything else. Josh & I had to emphasis to the boys not to foul out every single game we played. Mackay put us to the real test when we entered the 4th we had 2 players fouled out & 5 players on 4 with a 33pt lead. Mackay narrowed this down to 12 by the end of the game. Another notable game is when we played NS with their giant lineup. Logan had not played well against them through the regular season & Josh & I knew that Coach Al had every play of ours covered. We changed our offence that day & it nearly paid off.
I thought the level of reffering was of a fairly high level compared to the regular BQJBC season. So to the Refs, well done.
The word in the stands on grand final day was that Cairns were going to win from anywhere from 6-20 pts with their physical play however BBI had a diffferent idea.
Overall it was a great classics with all the boys taking away a learning experience.
Congrats to all of those that made the State Squad.

Is he really that good or stands out that much?

Josh D only stands out because he plays for Toowoomba. If he were in Div 1 it would be different for him. If he is so good , why couldn't he carry the Mountaineers to a gold or silver.

Josh D is a good player. It will be seen if no experience of div 1 will be his down fall.
Everyone is probably mentioning Josh as starting 3 because he is the only real 3 chosen for the squad. The bigs are not mobile enough to play the 3. James G & Nick D are shooting guards.

An extraction from BQ State Coach & Manager Selection Policy
3.1 b. Coaches will attend appropriate Basketball Queensland events (eg State Classics, Regional
Challenge, Top of the North, BQJBC, Central Queensland Challenge, Development Tours,
Development programs), at which the age group they are coaching is playing, to observe
potential State Team players.
Maybe someone might legally challenge BQ for a review or their money back?

Apparently the 16 selected were told by Bec they were selected on their play at Classics....Rob is this correct? If it is then who did the selections up there???? All coaches were given the list of state squad, with instructions to select from what they saw at Classics.... Alot of solid skilled players overlooked, but no spilled milk here just wanna wish your team luck, cause you're gonna need it. Relying on Nicky and Ian will be downfall of this team.

not correct, selections are based on more than just classics, the GC, SW, NS and SD coaches had a list of players (not every coach) to select from and could make recommendations from that list and others that stood out that were not on the list.
so who are the skilled players that missed out?
this teams looks like a face paced transition team, so if you were not that player you didn't make it and more importantly if you can't play defense then you didnt make it either.

they were announced at classics, after going to several classics in my time, there has never been just 10 picked.
I have seen a top 10 picked with 6 reserves, only difference in Cairns is that players were not divided into top 10 and reserves, big deal, I am sure they will work that out shortly after some training sessions.

You gotta wonder why anyone would vounteer for the job when they've gotta cop flak like this from everybody whose son missed out and then some more when the tournament rolls around and parents aren't happy with court time etc, etc.

First of all why don't we start getting sponsorships from businesses so we can pay for our coaches so we know we are getting the best for our kids and our coaches should be paid for their work.
2nd of all parents will never be happy unless there kid is getting all the attention. Which will never happen basketball is a team sport go take up tennis instead. What happens on the court has nothing to do with parents you should not be influencing your kids if they are good enough their time will come, be happy they have been picked if not there is next year if they are putting enough time and effort to get better. You shouldn't be thinking its a shoe in for your kids each year just because they were picked the year before. There will always be new and up and coming talent. Let the coaches do there jobs. You are not helping your kids.
Is there anyway the kids that arent picked and need to develop there skills we need training days for those who would like to learn to refine their skills learn plays and are willing to pay good coaches (there are alot of kids and parents wanting this . )

Similar doubts were voice before Josh went to Port Macquaire in January (because he played U14 SC) but his skills were obvious before he went. When he got there, he was the outstanding 3/4 of the tourament and within the top 5 players overall.
Granted U16 Nationals is another 2 levels higher (more regions represented, one year older) but so far he has ticked all the boxes.
Everyone sees him rack up points & comments on his offense, but he is even better as a defensive player and that alone is reason enough to select him.

I will say first hand that I too thought he was overrated somewhat in most of the games that I saw, however having coached against him he absolutely tore our team apart. Sure he's still pretty raw, but there is heaps of potential there and he's definitely more of a 3 than a 4/5.

I watched nearly every game of Toowooba's at Classics...didnt see much defence other thana 2-3 zone for 95% of the game. Is it just me or do no teams play man in DIV2. You right to question Josh's durability in a "div1 style game" great scorer seen him throw a left handed dunk down at classics out of nowhere but yet to see him acually guard and stop a decent player.

Is that so the sponsor can make sure his kid gets in the team? Like the coach doesnt get paid if they dont make it? Coaches get all their expenses paid and all it costs them is their time. Paying a coach doesnt mean your getting the best one.

And maybe we all shouldn't get paid to work as long as our exspenses are paid that more then enough insentive to turn up each day. So I guess you will signing up for coach training because it sounds worth it.

Doesnt take that much time to coach a junior team well if you know what your doing and theres plenty of people out there doing it for the right reasons.

as for coaching I can honestly say that I spent 3.5 hours per week training, 2 hours on game day and 1 hour to play in our local comp in a higher age group.
those are the physical hours, but like many other coaches there is probably 15-20 mins to plan for each session.

Not too much time for something you love is it?
Would you even want to be paid? I've knocked it back in the past and told them to put it in the kitty for classics. In fact I know one state coach who paid his own way to nationals and insisted his staff did the same (except the manageresss who worked "all time" for the team and deserved her expenses covered. That particular coach is more successful and highly respected than anyone you could pay in QLD at present.

To see a team transform and getting players to improve a level where they make more elite teams is a kicker for me.

This was my first year as head coach of a rep team and was such a learning curve. I spend alot of hours reading and talking with mentor/s .... I wish I knew and understood more.... All in good time I guess.

I first raised the concern about the state coach not attending classics. I don’t have a son playing in any junior age group.
I am now informed that this same State Under 16 south coach had to be spoken to about his behaviour by both a representative of BQ and the Referees Commissioner at the Under 14 Girls classics.

Al who are coacing next season?
not sure who I am coaching, ideally i would like to take u18s so that we can use it as a 2 year build - have a team of bottom agers like bbi silver this season..
but I think there is another coach that wants to do it.
other options are 14 boys or either assistant coach for 16s or 18s or having a year off....
Right reasons. Why hasnt he got a state job?
didn't apply, so thats the primary reason and secondly I don't think I would have been chosen.
the coaching staff for all state teams is of a very high quality and have run state teams for years.

Coaching a rep team was about the biggest mistake I ever made. Only did 1 season.
3 nights a week training, game days, team events. Tooo much time and commitment to have ungreatful little twerps not listen and argue with you and the rest of their team mates because they lost or didnt recieve the ball. Do the coachs really get anything out of it? The only time these kids are happy is after they had won, otherwise it is whinge whinge whinge. Thats before the parents even get involved. Rather just sit back let everyone else cop the shit. Good luck to anyone who puts their hand up to coach a team, say good bye to your social life and sanity.

Are you kidding me? This is a total fabrication and another in a long line of lies and slanderous statements against me and my family.
I am here in SA enjoying the outstanding preformance of our U 18 South boys, reaching the medal rounds. Awesome effort by all involved. I was on a real high and still stoked about the way these boys have preformed and bursting with Queensland pride. Then this garbage..
Today I get phone call from a mate telling me about this, no one ever spoke to me about "my behaviour" or any other issue when I was watching my 12 y/o daughter last weekend!! I did speak to some BQ people and some Ippy representitives along with a lot of other people.
I will personally ask Al and the other moderators to see if they can track this germ down, it is highly unlikely as they normaly defame and slander me and my family from a mobile device or on an internet cafe. That pretty much tells you all what kind of individual does this stuff. I will pursue this issue and if they can be tracked down I will do it with gusto. This needs to be stamped out from our sport, we should be encouraging our volunteers no slandering and telling outright lies about them.
As far as me not going to Carins, I went through all the right channels and informed the relevant people that I would not be able to attend. The reasons are mine and not for publication. I will ensure everyone that I have seen these boys play under many conditions and we as a coaching staff are satisfied that the process has been fair, thorough and sufficent to allow us to makea an informed decision. The results should be the judge if we have made the correct decision, if not I am always prepared to stand on my record.
I, like many otheres make many sacrifices for our sport, I am going to miss the U 18 Boys final game as they chase a medal at a national championship. My son as a member of this team understands my commitment to the U16 state program that I have made. He forgives me for having to attend a vital state training session at 8 am on Sunday morning. Thats my personal sacrifice to ensure that we get this final group of ten right and ensure that the process continues to be beyond reproach.
To the cowardly low lifes that hide behind their computer screens; make sure you cover your tracks completly because if you slip up WE will nail eventually you. Enough is enough!!

I was at all the games you are referring to. What a load of rubbish. Rob did nothing more then support his daughter in her games just as he does his son and other daughter no matter what level and what competition. Saw many times joking with BQ staff.
Have the courage to talk to him direct if you really think this happened. If someone told you this then you need to state who that was as they obvgiously have a hidden agenda and others should be aware so they understand the politics involved.
Time for people to respect how players are selected for State teams or even the local rep team for that matter
Having been involved for over 40 years it is never easy to say who should or should not get into a team at any level. My preference is to start with a one or a five and fill in the gaps from there. Worked for me over many years. Times change but if you want success then you accept that those appointed are in charge. Let them do the job they were appointed to do. If they do bad replace them but if they do not then lets give them the respect they deserve.
Lets stop bagging those trying tyo make things better.

If this was written in the Courier Mail I would be quite within my rights to sue for defamation, just because it is on Ben Does does not make it right.
I have had enough and if it means this clown is the guy that gets nailed so be it. Maybe it will deter others that think slandering and defaming people with this kind of rubbish is fair game.
The net is closing, and I will definately be making an example of this cowardlty scumbag!

Whilst I don't entirely disagree with you, it would not be a forum if it was heavilly moderated would it? It's here so people can have their anonymous say, and usually it is a useful opinion, but sometimes it's not. Like this one I'm typing right now.
but slander is a different matter altogether
good on ya Rob. You have more supporters than baggers mate.
Good luck in the hunt.
If you had to register before posting it would make it alot easier to control the crap posts. Annonimity would still be possible as the information should be held privately. Yes i agree have your say/critisism/rant but why lie and personally attack good people? I dont understand it and people shouldn't get away with it.

Josh - 6'2
Cade - 6'4
Lindsay - 6'2/6'4
Jarrod - 6'4
Declan - 6'2
Only short ones really are
Christian Lam??????????????
Brad Saul????????????????
Both Nicks and Ian are at least 5'11.
Short team? I dont think so. Rehashed team, looks like it. Seems same names pop up ever year, but good to see a couple of bottom agers in there.
I can't say I agree with the team, but Im not coaching and I dont know (what I'm talking about) what Robs plans are. I'm sure there are reasons behind every selection.
Good Luck Rob and the boys at Nationals.

Classics is Comfort Zone for Rep Ballers
They play at it every year, aswell as PL & TONS
Thats all in there comfort zone.
NATIONALS is where players are out of their comfort zone. And if they choose to take the challenge and play out of it, they will come up successful or atleast come out better.
Stay in the shell, do what feels just right then thats where you'll stay at and you'll keep at that level.
If youv been to a nationals and PLAYED not just watched, it aint easy and you gota adjust.
And once youv adjusted to that at a 16s Nationals level wait till you go up to 18s Nationals, thats a whole other step up, a whole other comfort zone.

All very true but think your missing the point that every kid goes to Classics hoping to be selected to get out of the comfort zone and play at the next level at Nationals. How have you missed the point? Well how did you get selected to go play at Nationals?
Didnt you have to go to a tournament and impress the coach as to how well you perform, maintain, adapt and behave under tournament pressure and conditions???? Sounds like you didnt so you must be one of the ones whose folks are someone big around basketball or who does drills well at practices ???

Similar doubts were voice before Josh went to Port Macquaire in January (because he played U14 SC) but his skills were obvious before he went. When he got there, he was the outstanding 3/4 of the tourament and within the top 5 players overall.
Granted U16 Nationals is another 2 levels higher (more regions represented, one year older) but so far he has ticked all the boxes.
Everyone sees him rack up points & comments on his offense, but he is even better as a defensive player and that alone is reason enough to select him.
Stats indicate that Josh is playing well in Tassie. His inside / outside game seems to be holding up against bigger / older players. Well done Josh, keep showing others what you have shown us over the last 2 years. Good luck to all the boys & coaches in this tough tourament, breakdown your goals & tick them off as you achieve them.

You guys have no idea what is involved in a campaign to win a national Championship.
First off this team is about next year and Rob is to be commended for having the balls to scarifice his reputation in taking the future strengths ths year to prepare them for next year. Watch whoever takes the credit nextyear for his committment to the greater picture.
A few things that shoule be changed.
1. The under 15 event should not be about winning but about development. This is where the older mature coaching staff should be going. Sorting the wanna-bees from the true player for the coaching program of the State team. Trevor Cook did this very well.
2. State coaching appointments should be two years. The head coach of team should be picking players for the 15 tour of the year prior they will be coaching the team. Yes that means they will have to be involved for three years. The first year should be as assistant coach. The second two as head coach.
3. BQ stop equalising the costs for north and south. It cost more to attend Coffs Harbour then it did to go to Tassie I am told. You want to live in the north then wear the costs or simply do not play in the Coffs event.
4. Make Classics as close to National in standard as possible fro the top eight teams. Create the environment and culture of success.
5. Do not make it compulsory for players to be in ITC. Make the program available to local coaching staff so that more players are exposed. Time is getting more and more valuable.
6. Talk to school programs to see what we can work on together. Stop fighting for players time.
7. Return to live in try outs for State teams. Hell we were most successful when we did it toughest as far as preparation goes.
8. Start rewarding the coaching and management of these teams. They give up a weeks work and all we do is bag them.
9. Start to look outside the square in how to manage and drive our sport. How about a parents meeting without staff there to brow beat the discussion.
10. Working harder and smarter. If it is not broken do not fix it but if this was a car race and we kept coming in the middle of the pack you would look for a new driver, machine, mechanics and sponsor. You would look at doing whatever has to be done.
So thanks Rob and others who have committed their time over many months to set us up for the future.. a least someone has some balls.

If this team was meant to be about next year why did Rob state that his results would speak for themselves. He didn't say that they would speak for themselves next year.
Look I agree with points 1 -10 but them team is currentley performing quite poorly & some bad selections were made. Is Nick C really playing in the 3? Why were six guards selected? Etc.. The list goes on.

That is the problem. In Queensland we have no long term plan. We are told by ITC what we ae going to do. Time people realised that ITC is about what is best for Australian junior teams. Are Nationals about winning. Not while ITC has so much influence. Watch what happens next year. Unless you are an ITC clone you will not get near State teams. No passion just a want to be part of a structure that has had its day. Where are the next drivers of our spport going to come from. Certainly not bitter parents and agreived players. Shame on those in control that each year we serve up more of the same swill. I really feel sorry to the players of today. They dance to whoever is in charge and as our State development is leaderless we will have more of the same for many years to come. Get out of the kitchen BQ and start listening to the people.

Is that why a Qld mens team hasn't won since 1975?

It's sarcastic little wankers like you this sport can do without.
You gain joy from ridiculing the teams unfortunate loss to Tassie, then write here we come as if you're a Queensland supporter.
I doubt you have a player in the squad as I'm sure you wouldn't be in their face taunting them over the loss, so in that case....
Woo Hoo thank goodness this tool is not in any way related to this team and their opinions aren't woth squat.
I coach but have no kids and no Biases, but I love Basketball and I love Queensland. Seeing that's not the case for you, get off this forum and crawl back under your rock.
To our Queensland Boys, Well Done beating NSW Country, unfortunate you had to back up with a second game the same day. Good Luck with what games are left and remember you can learn and develop from this tournament for the future, regardless of your results.

If you're such a Qld Supporter you should support anything that helps Qld develop their juniors. Such as supporting the proposed secondary tournie for the U18's group.
We need to develop our juniors in QLD! It's not happening! Everyone can see that from the current results at nationals. Also if QLD keeps picking players on name only they will never get very far.
People aren't knocking the boys, they are unhappy with the development of this current age group.

Queensland will always struggle with distance as an issue. Also the issue of stadiums managed by basketball with us ensurig the money stays in the sport. We have a hell of a lot of swimming pools up here. The third major issue is politics.
The distance thing while catered for a little with north and south teams is still huge. A player in Melbourne drives for 2 hours and is there. A player in Queensland can drive for 2 hours and still be 2 hours away. The Vic Coutry get round it and we should be looking at what they do to fix the problem. They are however a lot more willing to drive great distances then we are. I guess it comes down to do you want it or not.
Stadiums will continue to be an issue for the next 10 years. Local councils are now starting to recognise that they must assist indoor sports but when they say they are addressing the issues they are talking in long term strategies. A real issue in Queensland is that we allow to many smaller groups to set up if they have a roof. BQ have removed most in the north and done a job on the downs but this has actually worked in reverse. Might help to control the voting structure but they then walk away as they have no real alignment with the powers. No ownership no interest. How did we ever let another Association form on the north coast (example) when we already had two small basketball groups there. Maroochydore were doing a great job and Caloundra had been up there with the best in the past. Now Caloundra has folded and I am hearing the new boys on the block are struggling to get a serious junior and senior program off the ground. Not sure if my information is correct but I am told Caloundra now just run unaffiliated at lower costs which makes it hard for the legit Associations to convince new membership the fees are correct. Caloundra are still eligible, if you read the BQ information released by GM last week, to win the "Minor Association of the Year" though. Go figure.
Politics is our death though. We have all played them. Trouble is now it is the norm rather then the exception. Not going to get into this one. Have enough scars on my back. Management of our sport need to accept we all will challamge what they decide until they start explaining the logic a whole lot clearer. What I am trying to say is this State will always keep shooting itself until the day comes that the following happens.
1. Governance is open and honest with connections to the grass roots
2. Associations are receiveing enough training from above to be able to start doing the things they used to. Education.
3. People start seeing value for the buck. Need to see a benmfit for being part of whatever. Not sure anyones believes the propaganda. that is pushed out.
4. True levels of competition in both seniors and juniors. Create more competition levels and place a criteria on that that must be maintained. Let the waters of your desire and effort you make be the water mark for your own Associations. Yes put in teh ability to rise and fall but do not aletr the bench marks of success and the future.
5. Make our sport fun again for everyone.
If we want better programs then we need to start at the top. Change the way we operate and the membership will start to return to doing things. When they are positive and are perceieved to be working for the sport then everyone will be happier and more willing to contribute to the greater cause. If you do not fix the top then the bottom will continue to die. No one to blame but ourselves.
Our junior failures are a reflection of our failure to adapt to change and accept others as equal. People are starting to not care because they just do not feel part of the process.

Dont want to side with the State teams 'basher' as anything can happen at a big time tournament and 1 lapse, mediocre game or wrong decision at the crucial time can mean the difference between a medal and 5th-8th position. Congratulations to the boys for doing their best wearing the maroon and white. Would disagree however that a couple of differences in selections wouldnt improve the teams final placings. Also not getting into any comparisons between players but suffice to say you need a multi skilled team who can play multiple positions as well as spe^^^^^^t role players to make your systems work. There's a huge difference between kids who can compete and kids who shine at individuals drills at practice. Not so sure that the Sthn States necessarily have that much better players than QLD (like 5 Qlders in the Emus??) but have the feeling the State program is in disarray at present and become simply an extension (or support organism) for the Category 2, ITC program.

Mate, well said! Get a resume/application in to BQ as soon as possible. But since you dont have any political agendas and probably have a fair degree of integrity, ethics and ability, it will promptly go into someones wastepaper basket. (Dont want anyone rocking the boat by 'shining' around the place). So give Larry a call at BA and arrange for a chat with your ideas. He's a straight shooter, committed to resurrecting the sport, has come through the old school when basketball was a beautiful thing to be involved in and above all is open minded and receptive to positive input, PLUS, has the position to enact ideas and suggestions. He's also very approachable if done so in a professional manner. Keep the comments coming.

these players were selected because they looked the best on the day (according to Bec)...they were definitely NOT the best in the state! Ask Jordan he knew who the 'best' were in the squad...and it wasn't the final 10. $$$$ was another factor that put players in the team, not size or skill.... so get real and admit when a team selection is rigged because the person doing the final selecting is a standin, never been to any squad trainings and has no idea. The whole experience must have been totally humiliating for everyone involved and while I'm hea don't even start to compare the girls selection and process to the boys. You'll lose that argument too...there is not comparison to anything the girls do to the boys...Pam and co have that market cornered and Rob has no idea.

How did the North team go????????????????
North boys came 11th.
They played really well unfortunaly loosing by one point to SA country in the rounds which kept them out of top 8. One Point!
They had minor losses to NZ and then ACT in the cross over.
They also had a great game against VIC Country beating them at half time to loose by 15 or so.
North beat NT 7 WA Country in the rounds and then beat WA Country again in their playoff by 1 point.
Although the end result doesnt show it, the North boys did great and really put up some strong competition.
Congrats to Michael Demertze who led the top point scorers and leading rebounder for the tournament!
Also congrats to Ashley Archer on coaching his first Nationals team. The end position might'nt show it but you did a great job!
Good job to the North girls who came 7th :)

Yes let's move on by proposing to BQ that the power to chose state teams should be done by an official commitee and not just one or two people.
Moving on, has anyone else apart from SD named coaches or is every association leaving it untilthe last minute again? I think it is absurd because every association should realise that all the good players look at changing associations if a good coach is named at another association.

So what your saying is that the team will be coached by an official committee? is there enough space on the bench? Wont it add to travel costs? Only joking...because your a joke. Mate if you were able to coach basketball and not just your kid you might be a show to get a team and then everyone could slag off at your courtside behaviour and demeanour for starters, in fact I doubt you would survive a Nationals without being banned judging from your past behaviours around junior basketball.

Do you all realise that AA was the only applicant for the job in the North?
Where are BQ going to get all these coaches from?
Is it any wonder there are few applicants when their reward seems to be all the armchair experts and disgruntled parents bagging the crap out of your efforts over many months. Don't see any of these "experts" putting their hand up to volunteer their time, and you won't either, easier to sit behind a computer and critise and offer no alternatives.
Future looks bright.
whilst south and north qld didn't have best results, I don't think any team put on the floor from qld in this years tournament would have got close to the Vic teams, after seeing the different states at 14 nationals 2 years prior, the talent pool in Vic was far stronger.
we can go back and forth regarding team selection, but thats in the past.
but looking past that, few things are clear
- michael d from cairns dominated the tournament and lead the comp in pts and rebs, real credit to him.
- derkson put up decent numbers for qld and didn't even PL all year proving many doubters wrong.
- overall shooting %'s were down from qld, you look at players like chia, burns and many others, they don't shoot 20-30% normally. they are great players
- bottom agers were given some exposure to nats basketball which will help the next 16s lineup, add luke pittle, jason ralph, jackson and rest of the gang and that group will go well.
anyways, good luck to those players moving upto 18s.

Redlands have named ours, trials are on in early August - 2nd and 9th. As is fairly standard players have to be playing in the local competition to be selected in rep teams, so consider making the move soon if you're interested.

ALW - you are a good, objective judge of junior basketball. All the boys who represented QLD South gave it their best shot and at times showed thay could match it with the best, however stats can be misleading without seeing the games.
- Selected team was undersized, ratio of guards to bigs stood out against teams like Vic & NSW metro & country. Also backed up by stats: rebounds & points in paint.
- Shooting percentage down due to many forced shots & poor shot selection & pressure. Size?
- Some players not used to the level of intencity at nationals. Not enough experience at top level of PL or CLassics - found out under pressure in some games.
- Coaching maybe predictable -same starting 5, same substitutions in nearly every game.
- Showed the potential when beating NSW Country convincingly, coaches got it together, game plan good & team clicked.
- Played some great patches of basketball in all games with the best 5 combination on the court. Probably outscored opposition in at least one quarter in every game, including Vic Metro.
- Chia - quality guard, determination & competitiveness shone through.
- Dickinson - arguably best defensive player at Nationals
- Derkson - lots of potential, couple of good scoring games, felt pressure in others & will be better still next year
As you say, bottom agers will be better for experience and will help next years team when added to the players you mentioned and many more.
Good luck to all those boys and all the boys moving through to U18 next season - they will also be better for the experience
Hopefully the whole team enjoyed representing QLD, the experience and are hungry for further development.

They also had the 2nd worst points-against total (average 81 pts.) after the pool rounds. Perhaps their defence let them down more than offence.

Ashley has my full support as a coach, he mighten of had a good result but that might of been due to 8 out of the 10 boys being sick. I am a parent of one of the boys and i know not all the parents are feeling the same as what has been said about Ashley. I hope this does not deter Ashley from coaching again as the comment made was due to certain boys not getting enough court time, which whether we like it or not, it is the coaches call and we were told before Nationals, there is no guarantee of the amount of court time the boys get.

Lets face it, parents should be banned from kids sport. They are self-righteous biased idiots who generally know nothing about the game and are only happy when their kid is winning regardless of their skill level or position in the team. The sooner we get rid of these arm chair coachs the better in my opinion! Parents can be so detrimental to a team.
I've seen it first hand and all it takes is for a parent to entertain and encourage a kid when they are whinging and whining because their little egos are hurt, and all of a sudden the coach gets no respect and is labled 'a bad coach'.
As a parent, I will always back the coach in everything they do and say (within reason of course) because it teachs our kids valuable life lessons in how to behave in a team and community. If the supporters are united the team will be united and the results will speak for themselves.
Get rid of parents = getting rid of bitching = not getting rid of good solid coachs and other volunteers in our kids sporting life who give their time and efforts for your kids.
I ask you all this,
If our kids arent playing sport what would they be doing?
Drugs? Roaming the streets causing trouble?
RESPECT TO ALL COACHS!!!!!!!!

I would like to make comment about the state coach for qld north. He is a good bloke with a good heart and doesnt need all the crap that was put on him. he is a volunteer and put his heart and soul in to that team. Ok they came 11th. big deal we didnt have kids good enough to play at that level and win consistently. development continues and one day we will catch up to Vic and SA.
As for the parents, i am sick to death to see parents who know nothing bout the game continually get up set over court time. This is nationals not your local U16 comp. Its probably a joke your kids there to play in the first place. At that level winning the game is the main goal and thats what ashley tried to do.
so Ashley hold ya head high. Do not worry bout the interfering parents who know jack. And keep coaching big fella, your hearts in the right spot for the game. Doesnt matter how good of a coach you are , if your team is sub standard then you cant do much bout it.
