View Full Version : Gold Coast Basketball - 50th Celebration
Gold Coast Basketball 50th Celebrations
It has been 50 years since the first ball was bounced under the banner of “Gold Coast Amateur Basketball Association” (GCABA) at the Rotary Youth Centre in Southport.
This year we will celebrate this mile stone with a number of events. The major event will be our Celebration Dinner which will be held at the Gold Coast Convention Centre. We are very keen to collect as much memorabilia as possible for a static display and photograph presentation as part of the event. We are also looking to contact as many participants as possible who have been involved in the game on the Coast over these past 50 years. There have been a number of distinct eras of the Gold Coast Basketball organization over the generations and we would love to have representatives from each of these time periods.
There will be other events featuring our present crop of Junior and Senior players and we would be pleased to have our present players experience a comprehensive display of the history of Gold Coast Basketball.
If you can help with photos, uniforms, programmes etc, or contact information of former players; please contact Wendy at the Gold Coast City Regional Basketball Association on 0755944108 or drop an email to gccrball@bigpond.net.au
We are looking forward to collecting and archiving as much history as possible as well as re-connecting with many of those who have contributed to this great sport in this great city.

Come celebrate 50 years of basketball on the Gold Coast at the GCCRBA Gala Dinner held at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre on Saturday October 17th from 6pm.
Tickets are $120 per person and include a 3 course meal, live music from premiere cover band 'The Accidents', a silent auction with fantastic prizes, and a huge static display of memorabilia from the past 50 years of Gold Coast Basketball.
Many past and present basketball stars will be attending the evening so don't miss this chance to rub shoulders with some big names and catch up with old friends.

It seems the majority of the foundation families of Gold Coast basketball (like the ones who have their names in the bricks of the old hall-"buy a brick"- old school way of raising funds to build something) and the past top players, mostly have their kids playing and are doing their coaching for Foxy (speaking of foundation families) at Runaway Bay these days. (Wonder why?) Might just be rumours but seems a fair bit of animosity toward Foxy and the Runaway Bay crew from the people who run the association that calls itself Gold Coast these days. Still , surely people like Hammer, Owen, Tosser, Bounder, Johnno, Foxy and crew wouldnt not attend just because of a little thing like that. Sure it will be a smacking good night for people like say Chris Riches all the 'true' Gold Coast Basketball people.

Have you guys asked Mrs Peacock and family to attend. The family of the great Harold Peacock made it all possible.
I always wonder why so many great families such as the Granthams, Goldfinch and the likes of Fongo stay away in droves.
Fifty years and Gold Coast own nothing. A bunch of tribes with no real leadership.
What does it matter where the kids play, so long as they do. They are the future of Queensland basketball and are in it purely to play the game, unlike a few adults who can't seem to let go of the past and get caught up in old politics that no one is really interested in any more.
With respect to GC's 50th celebration, I cant see why everyone doesn't support it. Its purely a celebration of 50 years of basketball on the Gold Coast, its growth, its players, its supporters and its hopes for the future of the sport.
It will raise the profile of the sport on the Coast which will ultimately benefit our kids........who can knock that? I say good on GC for promoting the sport..........the 50th is a celebration, not a vehicle for negative criticisms.

Dont think that has anything to do with it socrates. More case of people questioning the legitimacy of the so called "Gold Coast Basketball" thing?? GC basketball these days is really a bunch of palm beach junior parents who hijacked a meeting a few years ago and called themselves GC basketball. To the newbys they've gathered since they seem like GC 'ball but there's no history there.
Well sort of. Some of those people were involved last time GC ball went broke and had to disolve. Longtime GC basketball people now questioning the legitimacy of asking life members (who actually set up and run the thing they are celebrating) to pay $120 a head to celebrate with the new crew. History does repeat and looks like its well on the way with GC basketball footing a $40,000 venue hire bill to stage this extravaganza. Thats about 350 people at $120 a head just to break even. Some celebration. You could do a lot for the kids with $40000.
Still looking for momentos
