Toowoomba Mountaineers v Caboolture Suns, Sat 2nd May 7pm @ Toowoomba Basketball Stadium-
Despite dropping their Round 1 game against the Force, the Mountaineers should enter the ring here with a level of confidence. A combination of the momentum that Anthony Tribe will bring (Round 1 Player of the Week) and the fact that the Suns import is sidelined for approximately 6 weeks (Martin Ajayi) after an accidental blow to the face, will have these two teams on even odds. The Suns are 1-0 after a win over the Clippers (103-97) with Ben Houchin the offensive leader with 21pts @ 54%. Michael O'Neill managed solid numbers in Round 1 for the Suns with 15pts, 6rbs, 9asts and Coach Ayanbadejo will need to ensure this was not just a one off. Expect the Mountaineers to be hungry at home with the team in real need of a win here leading up to the super tough Cairns-Townsville road trip in Round 3.

Ipswich Force v South West Metro Pirates, Sat 2nd May 7pm @ Ipswich Basketball Stadium-
Ryan Stolberg was the pick of the bunch for the Force in Round 1 (31pts, 19rbs). If Steven Broom and Luke Cann can crank things up to another level then this team stands to go a long way in 2009. The Pirates had a dismal start to the year hitting 30% from the field in their loss to the Goannas last week (69-87) - compare this to the Cairns Marlins who managed an impressive 57% over their 2 games -indicates the Pirates may be fooling with a few early season teething issues . Coach Cameron will be looking to Troy Thomson and Brendan Teys for more than what was shown in Round 1- both are very capable. Ryan Jeffries has been a producer for the Force for a few years and at 23 years old he is shaping as a future star of the program- what this space!

Brisbane Capitals v Cairns Marlins, Sat 2nd May 7:45pm @ Vince Hickey Stadium-The Brisbane Capitals are being led by ex-Bullets coaching staff member Dale Ryan. Coach Ryan gave good minutes to all 9 players in Round 1 to feel out strengths and weaknesses and was rewarded with a 108-100 win over the Wizards. This level of coaching experience is a massive addition to the program and when push comes to shove on Saturday night against the Marlins expect to see the home team right on the mark. The Cairns Marlins collected an early season double last week over Townsville and Mackay and now take on the Capitals where they will be looking to make it 3 and 0. Dean Brebner and Aaron Grabau won't be easy to control but throw in Kerry Williams, Dwayne Vale and new recruit Deba George and you've got yourself an all-star line-up. Make a mistake and the Marlins will punish you for it.

Maroochydore Clippers v Northside Wizards, Sat 2nd May 7:45pm @ Maroochydore Basketball Stadium-
Both the Clippers and Wizards are carrying losses into Round 2 but keep a close eye on this game is it could get personal. Dante Sykes recently joined the Clippers and managed to grab 23pts, 6rbs, 7asts in Round 1. In this game however he faces his former team mates and coaching staff with questions now floating around as to reasons for leaving the club he has played with for 2 seasons. Expect alot of pressure to be centralised around Sykes which could bring about opportunities for Isaih Tueta to capitalise on. Expect good things also if Zane Meehl shows up in a Clippers jersey. The Wizards hate dropping games let alone one to their closest rival - the Brisbane Capitals. This Round 1 loss will have them amped and ready to plough through the home team. Tragardh and Davis need to get back into the groove they had in 2008 where the team went all the way to the Quarter Finals.

Gladstone Power v Townsville Heat, Sat 2nd May 7:45pm @ Kev Broome Stadium-
The Gladstone Power have built a strong base this year with Michael Kingma (15pts, 15rbs in Round 1), Aaron Nagas (28pts, 7rbs, 6asts, 3asts in Round 1) and James Cochran (21pts, 9rbs, 9asts in Round 1) making up the power core. Throw Daniel Simanic into the mix who has a career-to-date average of 23pts, 6.7rbs and you've got a team that may shake the travelling Townsville Heat to the bone. The Heat will be desperate to have Cameron Tovey suit up this weekend as this Gladstone / Rockhampton double has the ability to have them on a win/loss of 0 and 3 by Sunday night. The team played in 3rd gear against the Marlins last week and it's time for Coach Rose to up the tempo on the squad who have much more than a snack on their hands here.

Gold Coast Goannas v Cairns Marlins, Sun 3rd May 2:00pm @ Tallebudgera Leisure Centre-
The Gold Coast Goannas have proven year after year that they are a solid team capable of an upset when it's least expected. The team finished 10 and 8 in 2008 and well outside of finals contention. This was off the mark for the Goannas who in 2007 went all the way to the Grand Final where the Cairns Marlins disposed of them in 2 games. Scott McGregor and ex-Mountaineer David Gurney will be the focus of the Marlins coaching staff in this clash, as both have the ability to hit baskets from any range. The Marlins are a professional outfit and back-to-back games will not faze them in the slightest. Expect just as much juice here, as they'll apply on Saturday night. Marlins could be early QBL front-runners at 4 and 0 if they can manage a successful weekend in Brisbane.

Rockhampton Rockets v Townsville Heat, Sun 3rd May 2:00pm @ Hegvold Stadium-
After watching from the sidelines in Round 1, the latest batch of Rocky Rockets will come bounding onto the court in Round 2, in a replay of the 2008 Grand Final where the Rockets defeated the Heat 97-80. Rhys Martin returns and Coach Tweedy will be expecting atleast his QBL career average of 20pts, 6rbs, 4asts to kick the 2009 season off, and Jason Auccoin of the Gold Coast Goannas will suit up in Rockhampton colours for the first time. Joining them will be US import Reggie Golson who could very well become one of the most well known imports in QBL history- expect big things from him on Sunday afternoon. This team is, as yet, an unproven mix which means the Heat could get blindsighted if they are not careful. However the Heat's Cedar, Susnjara and Tovey are elite players and will not back down to a fight.

Cyclones chiefs enjoy a pool of talent (http://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/story/2009/04/30/cyclones-chiefs-enjoy-a-pool-of-talent/)

When Chantelle Traficante leads the Rockhampton Hog's Breath Cafe Cyclones out this weekend, you won't find anyone prouder to be a Cyclone.

Traficante and new Cyclones team-mate Rebecca Haynes were yesterday appointed co-captains ahead of their team's 2009 QBL campaign, which starts against defending state and national champions the Townsville Flames at Hegvold Stadium on Sunday.

Rd 1 had some big surprises GC beatin SW, Ant Tribe killin it an gettin POW at the young age of 39 and i was only called for 1 charge.. will RD 2 deliver more of the same??? here's my copper coin...

Force vs Pirates
the Monavie monster is out for a few weeks wit his Ribs not being healed quick enuf by the magic potion n i cant see the Pirates repeatin last weeks plank walk... $50 on SW
SW 1.3:1 Ip 4:1

Neers vs Suns
Rocky had a Balboa like effort last week to beat Clips but POW n co will be looking to keep the W train going up on the mountain.. my apoligies for statin Suns coach is shortest in history my usual 100% correct facts may have fallen through.. anyway i'm going with the classic rocky movie ending and Suns to shine.. $7 on Suns
Suns 2:1 Neers 5:1

Power vs Tville
alot of excitement in the town of blue n gold smoke stacks n aluminum mainly about the gals game but hopefully they stick around to watch our game too.. this could be a massive nite at the Powerhouse if both games go to plan. i'm putting $100 on men n women...
Power 2:1 Ville 4:1

Clippers vs Wizards
Gianni v Trigger is this the match up of the Rd??? well no it isn't but the young boys will be lookin to back up Dante vs his old team.. clips are lookin much tougher this year but not tough enuf to beat Wiz.. $10 on Wiz
Wiz 2:1 Clips 5:1

Caps vs Marlins
BIGGEST MATCH UP OF THE ROUND (yes its that big it has to be in capitals) he who wins is deemed "09 Title Favs" this game is a lot like an old school Lakers vs Celtics finals match up the black showtime team vs the white Fundamentals team.. i love the lakers $50 on Cairns in a corker...
Cairns 3:1 Caps 4:1

Rocky vs Heat
1st time we get to see someone jump around in the house of pain... big names are nice but big name teams have been known to fail before.. their Chicks local captain is hot but thats not goin to help em win back to back titles.. they'l get this one tho cos heat wil be tired after losin an hour south the nite before... $5 on Rocky
Rocky 2:1 Heat 3:1

Goannas vs Marlins
gurney had some huge numbers last week well shot attempts anyway.. he's going to have to hit more if they are goin to stand a chance to beat this lit black ducks title Favs.. i'm goin to giv them credit cos they have the best strippers in the state but it wont be enough.. $75 on big fish
BF 2:1 GC 5:1

Qld health has banned my bookie Diego Survaverez from entering the country to take your bets personally due obviously to the Aussie Govt being racist towards mexicans an has nothin to do with some little flu involving Bacon... so send your Pesos or corona's to me an i'll post em on..

South West @ Ipswich - Stollie out leaves a huge gap. South West may be small, but I think they'll come in easily. Pirates by 15.

Coastal @ Toowoomba - A danger game for the Suns, who are without their import guard for a few weeks, although they still have one more than the Neers. Is Benny Mac playing? I notice he didn't suit up last week. Neers could get the upset here, but I'll give the visitors the nod. Suns by 7.

Townsville @ Gladstone - What's the deal with Tovey? He plays = Heat win, he sits = Heat lose. I'll reserve judgement here, but say it will be a tight game ... could by the Power's first POD win.

Northside @ Maroochydore - Trigger will school Gianni, whoever thinks otherwise is on the grass. Big story here is Dante taking on his old team. There won't be any anomosity (sp?) but he'll be out there with a point to prove. Wizards by 20.

Cairns @ Brisbane Capitals - Agree that this is game of the round. This will show both teams where they're at. Get out and watch if you can. Marlins by 4.

Townsville @ Rockhampton - Regardless if Tovey plays or not, a fresh Rockets side should get a W here ... even if they don't have a bench.

Cairns @ Gold Coast - So the Goldie look ok after all, not fantastic, but a serviceable squad. Marlins by 8.

Benny Mac was on crutches last week at the clips game and was hobbling around so im sure he is out for awhile yet but he was sitting with the team which makes me think he is going another round, he will be a huge asset to the suns when he returns. with benny, rocky and the yank on board will be the quickest backcourt in the league (as well as shortest). rocky had a gd game against the clips last week and look forward to seeing them all play together.
Shame about all the injuries so early in the season as was pointed out could really be the beginning of the end for a few teams, the next 3-4weeks will sort them out. It will show who is deep and who isnt.
Cairns v Bris will be a cracker this wkend and forsure would hold title fav status. Looks like Gladdy have sorted things out up there and put a really gd squad together. As for watching Gianni last wk he will not stand a chance against Trigger, he will be eaten alive. Really didnt step up like i thought he would against the Suns, thought the younger posts out played him. Look forward to the wkend and seeing some more quality ball as this yr shapes to be one of the closest in a few years.

Rocket lands justin time (http://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/story/2009/05/01/rocket-lands-justin-time/)

The Rockhampton Stadium Nightclub Rockets have woken a sleeping giant for this year's QBL.

Standing at a towering 213cm, Perth man mountain Justin Brown arrived in Rockhampton last night ahead of the Rockets' season opener against arch-rivals the Townsville Heat at Hegvold Stadium on Sunday.

Brown, 28, will also become the tallest player in this year's QBL when he suits up this weekend - giving the Rockets' legitimate size and power up front for their title defence.

Brown, fresh from a standout season with the Worcester Wolves in the England Basketball League, comes from a tall family.

Kristina Innemee’s 26-point haul for Maroochydore last weekend was the match-winning performance every coach dreams of.

What is even more impressive is Innemee’s sharp shooting came in her first game in the QBL.

The 18-year-old forward is a product of the Clippers’ highly successful junior system, and is hoping to replicate her efforts in tomorrow’s round two clash against the Northside Wizards at Maroochydore Basketball Stadium, with a 6pm tip-off.

THE task does not get any easier for the Cairns Marlins and Dolphins, who will spend a second consecutive weekend on the road to open the Queensland Basketball League.
Cairns leaves for the state’s southeast this morning for games against Brisbane (tonight) and the Gold Coast (tomorrow afternoon) in another difficult double-header.
The Marlins started the season in the best possible way last week, beating North Queensland rivals Townsville and Mackay in results that will boost their chances of eventually earning a home playoff.

Well since he doesnt get paid he's definately worth it. Funny lot of people at that game laughing at the irony of the 'no-cost' Gianni tearing it up for 40 minutes (till he fouled out) and Caloundras 'paid-pro' big guy alternating between crying to the refs or sitting on the bench with a bewildered look on his face. Looked good in the warm up though.

The record that the Flames held winning two consecutive National titles was a franchise record and the 2009 team is a new team so to say an end to a 50 game streak does not apply to the new group of girls. Townsville from last year has lost Cassie Dover, Rachael Flannagan, Annie chow, Leonie Bonke, Jillian Horton, Katrina Pearce, Celest Heilbron. So the new look team will take it one game at a time. and good luck to them.

Townsville Flames' 49-game win streak broken (http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2009/05/04/51931_sport.html)

IN a strange way, Townsville's 83-60 loss to Rockhampton yesterday came as a relief.

Sure, the Flames would have taken the Queensland Basketball League win if they could, but the defeat ended their stunning record winning streak at 49 consecutive successes.

In the process, coach Mark Wrobel said it lifted a major weight off their shoulders.

Cyclones send stern warning (http://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/story/2009/05/04/cyclones-send-stern-warning/)

Australian Opals star Abby Bishop shone, but it was young point guard Lara Napier who literally stole the show for the Rockhampton Hog's Breath Cafe Cyclones at Hegvold Stadium yesterday.

Bishop and Napier sent the QBL a “Cyclones” warning after ending reigning state and national champions Townsville's winning run with an impressive 83-60 round-two victory.

Rhys Martin played the hero, Justin Brown the giant, Reggie Golson the showman and Jason Aucoin the enforcer as the Rockhampton Stadium Nightclub Rockets played out the first chapter in their QBL title defence at Hegvold Stadium yesterday.

The Rockets' supporting cast also stood tall in an action-packed 108-85 win over the Townsville Heat in a sometimes spiteful showdown between the arch-rivals.

Anyone at the Brisbane v Cairns game able to do a write up here?
Nothing on QBL website yet...

good game brisbane did well to get back into it and take the lead in the 3rd for a short time before carins boys took control and dominated the back end. brisbane looked sharper with smith on the point but when carins upped the defensive intensity brisbane had no answer. thought bremmer was good kerry controlled thingswell while for brissy most were solid without a standout shaw needed to see the ball more i was surprised at such a small crowd good tuf game.

Strong words...sounds like a bitter supporter of a losing team. You sound like the disgrace. The guy is talented, don't write up this crap tearing players down. Oh wait, he is dirty, he got ejected...no wait that was Susnjara. Fool. The rockets team, Jason included, played a great game.

"Wrobel was also scathing of the referees, saying he struggled to comprehend how the officiating could differ so much between games, especially when one had done both.

He said he would eagerly review video footage of the game."

Lets not bash refs in public, if there is a problem follow proper channels.
Thought BQ had done a good job of cleaning this up by fineing coaches in the past

Anyway looks as though Flames were never in the Rocky contest after the night before. Didn't hear Gladdy comment about their 38 fouls which most would find that many most unusual. Towny very much on the right side of the foul count including Rocky game

Peace

i'm sure if the gals had continued winning this would still apply to the group but good on flames they had a great run..
going to be a hufreakinmungous match up this weekend Gladdy v Rocky as good as rocky gals are they have Power to thank for the 20pt win.. backin up the next day is tough its even harder when you went into double overtime the night before...

and to the person who asks why we cant have young ppl to do the stats if you can find young ppl who would rather sit there an take stats then drink n enjoy the game then by all means get em down there but i think you will find it hard hence the older ppl who volunteer there time to do it will continue carryin the association,,

well said. Just because Jason is strong and a talented player does not make him dirty. And a disgrace.....???? How he plays does wonders for the game. The fans love it!!!!! And we all know basketball needs a greater fan base.

No im actually a Rocky fan and glad the Rockets won. Just don't like the way Jason played...just my opinion though. Susnjara was a fool for getting ejected. The rest of the team did a great job. don't know if you saw the game but grabbing people's singlets and pulling them to the ground doesn't really seem like good defence or sportsmanship.

Aucoin deserves all the cat calls he gets at the moment. He has been playing like a thug for the last few years, which I personally think is a great shame, because he used to play some great respectable ball until he started losing the plot.

Anyways here's the Week 2 contenders for the POW chook raffle ...

WOMEN
Jess Bibby (GLA) - 40 & 5/6stl/3ast in 40+ v Townie
Nat Hurst (GLA) - 40 & 12/7ast/3stl in 40+ v Townie
Kirby Dalgelish (TSV) - 33 & 12/7ast/5stl in 39+ v Gladdy, backed up by 16 & 6 in Rocky
Abby Bishop (RKH) - 28 & 11/3stl/2st in 31 mins v Townie
Leah Rush (RKH) - 20 & 10/4blk/2ast in 38 mins v Townie

Perhaps Bibby mild favourite here. Put up solid numbers in a tight contest, and shot at a good clip.

MEN
Cam Tragardh (NOR) - 41 & 12/5ast in 43 mins v Maroochy
Rhys Martin (RKH) - 29 & 3/4ast in 42 mins v Townie
Reggie Golson (RKH) - 27 & 11 in 37 mins v Townie

Anyone's guess here. Maybe Trigger on sheer numbers. I make note that Cairns had two solid wins over the weekend, but the good work was fairly evenly spread across many players ... nobody in particular stood out.

Big nod to youngster Ben Houchin from the Suns who stood up for the second week in a row and top scorer for his team over the Neers. Also looks like Steve Golver's been giving Bam Bam free throw shooting tips - 1/9 ... damn.

Jason has not been playing like a thug for the last few years. You are full of crap if you believe that. I read what you post on theis site all the time and enjoy your insights but i totally disagree with your initial statement. He is a very talented player. A "thug" has never led a team to the finals, a "thug" does not average what he has averaged the past few years. Lay off the Jason bashing. Players, myself included, enjoy playing against him cause he gives it his all. Jeeze.

not sure if Bibby will get it 2 weeks in a row but she got those in less then 40 because she fouled out before the game ended...

Nat carried the team after that for the next two overtimes ending the game with 4 players 2 younguns (15 an 14 yrs old) an another Benchie an herself and they still only lost by 5 so either one would be more then deserving of POW

as for Aucoin i would like to agree that its very possible to be a thug a wanker an a good player.. a guy like Kruger is a prime example of someone who built a career out of it has nothing to do with their off court persona tho which some ppl sadly seem to cant let go of... sure you hit a guy he hits you wateva play the game but once the games over let it go..

Sue-Mo was something very special and if circumstances were different the cyclones with her at the front would have gone close to winning comp that year she was here in Rocky...had to feel sorry for the girls.

It'd be an insult to the hard working people at the Suns to enter into a debate with an idiot that leaves himself open to being reminded about the depth and track records of the two associations over time. Best just leave you to enjoy your two wins so far with the team that your paying good money for. Yeh the Clips are complete losers according to you but your super team won by what 6 pts? How many dollars a point does that add up to? Yeah, yuck it up buddy. Good luck against the Wiz. All in good time.
