View Full Version : QBL 2009 - Week 9
Thought I'd get in early with my predictions for week 9, even though there isn't a thread yet, which basically consists of 8 no brainers and a caboolture/goldy game that is a 50-50. Let's skip to it..
Cairns v South West
The Marlins have put their roster on notice that to continue being a member of this squad you must walk around with a shirt off at all times, no matter what the occasion. Jawai is not keen on this philosophy. Dwayne Vale loves it, that guy would go shirtless to a wedding. Niesler will have 15 points but 20 panties thrown at him by screaming girls, despite not walking around shirtless which will infuriate Vale. Not enough to get the Pirates a w'ya tho.
Marlins by 32
Caboolture v Goldy
Rumour is David Gurney's contract has been terminated by the Goannas for not walking around without a shirt off enough. That's why he wasn't on the road trip and wasn't present for the great shirtless exhibition that followed the Marlins v Goannas game. In unrelated news Brent Andrews has requested a transfer to the Goannas. Too much Rocky O'Neil will just get the Suns home.
Suns by 9
Force v Power
There's no Anthony Standen bucks night to motivate RJ to another triple double this time. Nagas doesn't need an excuse to party and will have his own themed bucks night with costumes and all after this game just for the hell of it. Iwanicki, Simanic, Espanoza.. do the Power have an announcer or has he quit already cos he feels like he's commentating european soccer?
Power by 11
Mackay v Bundy
Lloyd Lewis has bet on the Bulls to win by a margin of 8-11 in a game with a combined score of over 216 while Hanson scores 31-35 and the Bulls lead at every change while they attempt 37-42 free throws and Kyle Kiernan scores the first points of the game. Can't say I agree tho. Too much Cook n Fitz. Very interested to see what happens with these 2 if they get an NBL gig in the coming weeks.
Mackay by 35
Wizards v Clippers
Adam Gibson has been sending email offs to England of late. Given that he has signed with the Blaze it can't have been basketball related, apparently he just likes English girls. Colby Stefanovic will continue to guard 1 through 5 and will probably have a crack at both Gibbo and Cam. Cam has his sights set on topping Kevin Catron's 86 points he scored against Parramatta back in 87.
Wizards by 28
Townsville v South West
Townsville easy. Pirates should want revenge for that semi-final game last year where they couldn't throw a rock in the ocean, they just can't seem to get in a groove tho.
Heat by 20
Rockets v Bulls
Big sunday night on the piss up in Rocky, Bundy boys apparently staying til Tuesday to get amongst it. Aucoin has lost the plot, just play ball and you'll have 35 against this mob. Rockettes would beat the bulls by 20, I'll take the Rockets by 31
Toowoomba v Gladstone
Keep firin em up Glove, 13 shots on the weekend?! Mate take 45 this week, even if you make 15 it's better in your hands than some of the other lads, get that average up to 30. In unrelated news I just found a pimple.
Power by 49
Brisbane v Ipswich
The Caps have been taught well that it's important to share with others, but it might be time for some guys to start being selfish. Shawry, put ball in hoop. Horror shooting % so far this year, he's due for a break out and will have 38. Castle, Ferg, Smith, Barty, Beaky and the rest of the crew solid as always, I think they need Shawry to step up n be the guy on offence if the Caps are gonna go anyway this year though.
Caps by 22
random omni but funny as.....
Nagas is going to do it tough to top that but my faith is with him, Hey were is TAG????? I loved that guy.
There's now a week 9 thread :)

Friday
Cairns v South West - Expect Cairns to get on top early and keep the foot on the throat. From all reports they were dissapointed with the performance last week against the Goannas. For South West to get close Jason Cameron and Brendan Teys will need to light it up. Cairns by 26.
Saturday
Caboolture v Gold Coast - Scott McGregor is so heavily relied upon to get th Goannas going. Dave Gurney returning will help but I think O'Neill, Andrews and co. will get up. Suns by 6.
Ipswich v Gladstone - Hope Gladstone are ready to play in cold, old Ipswich. Force need Cann, Jeffries and Broom to be on song however Esperaza, Siminac, Kingma and Cochrane will have too much. Power by 13.
Mackay v Bundaberg - The Meteors are flying and have taken some big scalps. The Bulls rely on Jason Moore and Matthew Hanson. Hanson can get his 30+ but Cook, Fitzgerald, Blanchfield and Jackson will get it done by 24.
Northside Wizards v Maroochydore - The Clippers will struggle to contain Tragardh as most team's do but 70 is not on the cards. Expect to see Adam Gibson to play more and blend with the team. Wizards by 18.
Townsville v South West - The Heat apparently have men down this weekend. Chris Cedar and Anthony Susnjara will be needed to drop 20 each. Cameron, Teys and Ammar will give them a shake. Heat by 6.
Sunday
Rockhampton v Bundaberg - Big Sunday afternoon in Rockhampton. The boys will be keen to avenge the loss in Mackay and should do so quite easily. Hanson will be a tough cover for either Brown or Aucoin but let him get his 30 and outscore the rest. Rockets by 28.
Toowoomba v Gladstone - Will be easy to see the Power flat in this one and even if they are they will beat Glover, Tribe and co by 20+.
Brisbane v Ipswich - Brisbane are the Rabbitohs of the league. Who knows what you get with them. This week however I can see an easy win over the Ippy crew. Caps by 18.

Cam said he was out this weekend and I believe that means Gibbo too. So I give Clips a Big Chance.
What God does Warwick Meehl pray too, cause I want a piece of that
wow who knew Rocky would be such sore losers well i guess we all did they jus confirmed it (whhiirrrr thats the line being cast out), lucky they put on a good spread after the game cos thats whats deciding this weeks winners in Australia's Premier Winter league...
Cairns v South West
Delicious Chicken burgers with any salad a man could want or need plus the option of a sausages or vege burgers not to mention FREE BEER or gatorade if your into electrolytes an recovering etc but did i mention FREE BEER its no wonder these guys are going to win the State title easily the number 1 spread in the state...
Caboolture v Gold Coast
Burgers, Pizza and assorted salads both of these teams have decent spreads hard to separate them, i'm going with Suns cos they gave me an extra Powerade last time i was there..
Ipswich v Gladstone
cold pasta an a red sauce of some description but not much taste throw in the fact there's no hot water in the visitors dressing rooms in winter, it's easy to see why i would rather drive 12 hours north then 7 hours south...
Mackay v Bundaberg
Maybe its all the wogs in North Qld that explains the good food but you cant beat the variety you get in Mackay, cheerios, sausages rolls, pizza, burgers, even a pasta dish or two. makes it easier losing to them when you can eat like you just won enjoy it while u can Bundy..
Wizards v Maroochydore
Warwick sacrifices young blonde virgin surfers to the bball gods how else can you explain it... NS is the only place you get assorted desserts an they will taste so much better for Clips after this win..
Townsville v South West
now i'm sorry but week old pasta isn't acceptable as after game dining, the only ppl game enough to eat the food here includin the locals players were our Seppos an they looked green the next day altho that may or may not of had anythin to do with the Mad Cow or Bullwinkles...
Rockhampton v Bundaberg
maybe its a POD thing with the good food but these guys provide bay maries full of goodness so stock up to comfort eat for the trip home bundy...
Toowoomba v Gladstone
food aint to bad but its jus freakin freezin and only eskimos enjoyin eatin in sub zero temps. i'm hopin for heat wave to hit this weekend so we can play in temps above 5'C...
Brisbane v Ipswich
this maybe a fight out for bad after game spreads as i think you just get leftovers from Canteen in brissie which only jus beats Ippys attempts... but they def have the best service here i dont think iv seen the family behind the counter not smile in the last 10 years the friendliness wil get up by at least 27...
since we are on the subject of Food, all bets this week will be accepted in the form of Tin food an long life food products which will then be donated to the Salvation Army in light of the thousands of homeless people they help from freezin to death each winter or you could just donate something yourself...

Great Scott! Paul's back with the Rockets (http://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/story/2009/06/20/great-scott-pauls-back-with-the-rockets/)
Debbie Scott may not be on the Rockhampton Stadium Nightclub Rockets' playing roster, but she could be responsible for the team's biggest play of the season.
Rockets fans should buy Debbie, the wife of Rockets veteran Paul Scott, a drink at Hegvold Stadium tomorrow after talking her husband into coming out of retirement for the remainder of this year's QBL.
Scott will be back in his No.14 singlet for the Rockets' round nine QBL showdown with the Bundaberg Bulls tomorrow.
American import Reggie Golson sent a scare through the Rockets camp when he injured his knee at practice on Thursday night.
However, Tweedy said the crowd favourite would be a certain starter tomorrow.

I am expecting an upset in the North tonight. The Pirates to get over Townsville is my prediction. With Cedar, Tim Durox and McCully all out I think Teys, Cameron, Ammar, Thompson and Niesler will get it done and secure a good win.
women - Northside by 3 over Maroochydore. Missed layup central.
men - Northside by 13. Shane Davis MVP and newbie Tim Coenraad is the real deal. Dante back to his selfish ways for Maroochydore and I reckon Zeke was their best player.

I thought they had no chance without Tragardh and Gibbo but newly recruited Tim C played well with about 18 boards and Davis played in the posts and still got 34. Northside with Cam T, Gibbo, Tim C, and Josh Darragh (who is playing outstanding) Northside are going to have a good chance this year. It will be interesting to say how they all work together.
Starting 5?
Darragh
Tragardh
Coenraad
Gibson
Davis.
Great team.

Gee Vdogg, whats happening in Bundy? The teams a joke, I think my Under 16 girls team could kick there ass. I certainly think its time to get rid of some of the cancer in your team.
Anthony Labka is causing a fair amount of disharmony in the team, seen him out there today barking orders and he's the worst player in the team you only have to look at his stats 31 minutes 0-5, 1 point, and wow a massive 4 boards. Great effort for a 6'10er and the biggest in the team.
Anthony Parry is another that needs to be culled from the team, yes Pags used to be a efficient baller, but I think he needs to hang up his boots and call it a day.
One last shot is at Jason Moore, although a great guard, he's not worth whatever Bundy is paying him. 47 turnovers already this season and a lousy 20 assists.
Anyway Vdogg goodluck with the rest of the season mate, your gunna need it I'm afraid

Im not saying he is the best player ever to grace our shores but he is definitly not shit. Just goes to show how some people form their opinions based on zero knowledge.

It might be too early to say I told you so, but I wonder what the pre-season poster who told me Martin Ajayi would be shit because he is Canadian and played in the shitty Canadian college league is thinking now after Martin dropped 56 on the weekend and is averaging 21 on the year.
Im not saying he is the best player ever to grace our shores but he is definitly not shit. Just goes to show how some people form their opinions based on zero knowledge.
Summers.
I'm still here and he's still shit. When I saw him play against quality he stunk it up.
21 points a game is nothing especially when you are the expected scorer with the green light. He has just made them a bit more competitive than they would have been which is good for the league.
Boy did you have to wait to write than post about him actually doing something by the way!

PS just looked up his stats for the year.
Here are some against quality opposition
Mackay 2 from 6 for 7 points, 6 fouls and played 16 minutes
Rocky 2 of 13 in 42 min for 18 points and an incredible 13 from 17 from the stripe!! There the easy points. Also had 11 turnovers.
Not exactly setting the world on fire champ!

Who's player of the week? People are going to want to say Ayaji (however you spell it?) because he dropped 56 but I would say it has to go to Cochran with two near triple doubles, averaged 33, 10.5 assists and 9 rebounds for the weekend. And I have to agree with old mate Summers you walked right into that one. You can't come on after week 9 and talk him up for having 56, which is an amazing effort no doubt, but he was shooting like 29% or something before that game. The Suns are a sleeper though, alot of people including myself had written them off from making the playoffs but looking at the games they have left the Caps will need to stay sharp, and in particular beat the Suns again next time they meet to hold them off. Unless Townsville pull something out of the bag it's probably the only playoff spot up for grabs.
jimmy did play very well on the weekend so should get a look at player of the week.
Womens should go to Nat Hurst she had 29points 4 boards and 7 steels against ipswich. A huge 27points 18 assists and 11 steels against towoomba.....
Who's player of the week?
I'd give it to Ajayi. 50+ against the Goldie is a great effort.
Cochran had solid games, but the opposition was Ippy/Neers .....

Blanchfield's 48 on Bundy also must put him in the running for POW. A tougher matchup than Toowoomba, and Ippy and maybe Goldy. Shot at 62%, took 29 shots, only got to the foul lie 6 times, all in 36min. And to get the ball enough to get those numbers with Fitzy and Cook out there is amazing too.
Cochran's numbers were certainly great, but against the teams with the worst defence in the league, and he did not long dominant out there.
Ajayi's 56 is massive, but took 32 shots and got to the foul line 20 times. Played 46min too. Next highest scorer for Cab was 8 pts. So Caboolture looked like last year again, one guy doing everything while the other boys watched him, except this year it's a guard not a forward, and they're playing better D and winning the games.
A shout out to SD at the Wiz for stepping up with Cam and Gibbo away to take on the big scoring role. Nice impact by Conraed too. Northside beginning to look really tough now.
At least with Cam out for the week, there's a few people that have a chance to get POW, all worthy candidates, have fun picking that one Brooksy

Bundy loses basketball battles (http://www.news-mail.com.au/story/2009/06/22/bundy-loses-battle-in-the-north-bears-fight-hard-a/)
CHALLENGING title-contenders Mackay and Rockhampton within 18 hours of each other on a gruelling road double is never an easy task.
Without two of their starters, Kyle Keirnan and Lloyd Lewis, it made the task near impossible for the Bundaberg Radiology Bulls.

Sometimes basketball games are won with great tactics. Other victories may be built on grit and determination.
On other occasions, like Caloundra's home win over Gold Coast on Saturday night, a player simply puts together a freakishly impressive performance.
That is exactly what Suns star Martin Ajayi did against the Goannas, finishing with a personal haul of 56 points to help Caloundra to a 109-92 victory.

Never said he was setting the world on fire "champ". In fact I said I know he isnt the greatest but he is not shit.
Im not sure you understand the argument. Im not saying and never had said he is the best player ever seen, Im arguing against your point that he is shit. Maybe when you score 56 in a game you can call others shit.
And if that post is your stats of 10ppg then he is 11ppg better then you so if he is shit, was does that make you?

paul scott back for rocky.....
And what a big help he will be!!!
Pauly is a proven player and knows his role, every team needs a Paul Scott...
On the Canadian import, he obviously played well but think its a bit early to get excited, he has had many ordinary games but a chump can't score 56 on anyone in this league.
I like Blanchfield for POW - 48 points on a good clip, plus he has to share the ball with Fitz and Cook is a great effort!!

Your the one who used the word "shit"!
I said he would be an average player. I was right.
Too bad he wont see 15 years in the league. He may play some years for whatever the teams name is. They are better for it. Imagine how bad they would be without him! They aren't going to compete with him against the top teams. That's all I'm saying, and all I said back pre season.
By the way that was average over a period of 15 years where I wasn't playing 46 minutes every game for 15 years. You see as you get older, you play less time to allow up and comers to play. You also as you get older get better in your own mind. The leaugue has definately dropped off! No way Cam would put those numbers up on me. (You know that Cam!) Cam might have 70 on the back nine in my buggy and that's it. By the way he would be carrying me cause I'm a shit golfer. I may however have 56 one game and think I'm a world beater and tell the world. But then reality would set in again next game and I'm shit again!
Good on them for getting him here. You are the one rooting for him! I know he aint on my recruitment list for the future!

CM
Neutral observer here. But they were missing Keirnan and Lewis. Both are starters. The team doesn't exactly have much depth. It showed against two of the better teams in the league.

Wow. The chook raffle strikes again.
On another subject, went and watched the Clippers take on the Wiz on Saturday night. Got there with five minutes to go in the ladies game and the Clips were up by 7. A few turnovers and missed layups from the visitors gave the Wizards a sniff, and they got home in the last minute on the back of a late scoring spurt from Nat Purcell, who ultimately iced the game at the charity stripe in the last thirty seconds. All in all not a pretty game from those who saw most of it.
The Wizards started off the mens game with a 19-5 run. Was expecting a bit more fight from Maroochy but they looked absolutely flat in the first quarter. Perhaps they weren't expecting Timmy Coenraad to be such a factor early on (I didn't even know he was playing). Tim was 100% for his first ten points, and was also over the boards. He knocked in a four point play as well. Also getting things ticking over for the Wiz was Toby Z, who had the better of his matchup with Gianni, and SD feasted on an in-form mid-range game.
Maroochy were a bit more composed in the second. They did well to force a number of turnovers from JD and Woody, but remained cold from outside, which saw them still down by a fair margin at the half.
Third period momentum swung back towards the home team with SD and Toby scoring consistently. On the other side of the ledger, Dante seemingly did his best to keep the Clips out of the contest. Three straight possessions for three poor shots during a crucial period without even acknowledging his teammates - Waz had no choice but to pull him ... then Dante acts like it was anyone's fault but his own ... poor form, and Waz I feel for you. The younger crew with Zeke at the helm did well I thought.
Leading by 20, the Wizards unloaded their bench with 7-8 minutes ago. Maroochy hit back to come within ten, forcing the Wizards starters to re-enter the game and see off the challenge. Game eventualy petered out to a final result. SD was a rock for the Wizards, he is in career-best form this season. Timmy C was great in his first game - he's added a polished offensive game (including a quick release) to his arsenal and has improved on his rebounding. Toby is still a few steps off being anywhere near the monster he was a few seasons ago, but thought he played smart both on both ends in registering a double double. JD came close to a triple double, with his only negative being the loose handling for six turnovers.
Izzy had a quiet 19 for Maroochy, thought he only scored four or so until I checked out the stats ... I must've confused him with Zeke (who as one of the shortest blokes in the game I thought played well). Zane was unusually quiet (disappointed as I was there largely to see how he went). Gianni had an off-night also (going by previous performances anyway) although he showd glimpses of being effective inside. Malakai didn't play a lot, but I reckon he has solid potential and will be a bloke to look out for if he stays in the program.
In the end this was a danger game the Wizards would be happy putting away. A win by Maroochy would have made things real interesting.

Probably could rock up there and get a game. Would still walk out on the floor and have 10 and 8 in 20 minutes. I would probably make that what's his name Canadian look better too. At least I would be able to get him open off a decent pick so he could jack his 30 shots. He too would probably love to come of a decent pick so he can get an open jumper off.
Anyway too busy at practise every now and then in Rocky. Much rather see Reggie coming off a pick cause I know he would hit it!

I'm afraid this makes a mockery of the award. Don't get me wrong I like Hansons game but the guy over two games shot 39% from the floor for his points and the team lost both games by 44 points. All I am saying is there were better candidates this week, ie Ajayi, Blanchfield, Cochrane and their teams all won.

I could confidently say I led the league in one stat at least...DNP...and for a couple of seasons too! Completely understand now why the criticism. Old mates line up in basketball stoush (http://northside-chronicle.whereilive.com.au/sport/story/old-mates-line-up-in-basketball-stoush/)
It took one phone call for the Northside Wizards to have two Australian basketballers suit up for them against Caboolture on Saturday night.
Wizards’ Cameron Tragardh, pictured, has been joined by Boomer point guard Adam Gibson to give the northsiders a lethal punch which threatens to take the Queensland Basketball League by storm.
"People say `why didn’t you show them some mercy’, but, if I’m on the court, I want to beat you by as many as I can.
"I get a rise out of seeing a defender demoralised after I’ve hit four or five shots in a row and it just spurs me on.’’
Tragardh said the Wizards owed Caboolture some "pay back’’ after a 100-99 loss earlier in the season.

Caps have already beaten Wizards this year, but hey don't let the facts get in the way of your whinge.
Remember this too: without the south you guys don't even have a league. I would be a little more respectful to the southern teams that allow the Marlins and Rockets to dominate year in and year out! Heaven help you Northerners if the Southern clubs ever get jack of propping up the big spending sides in the North.
South clubs are producing quality juniors, BBI currently have 4 boys at the AIS. BBI, M'Dore Districts and Logan have junors representing their country soon in the world championships. Do not see any Northern boys in that group, but yet you dominate the QBL. We all know how the northern teams do that too.

I think the Wizards are now improved enough to beat Brissy next time though. Time will tell there. But Brisbane have also beaten townsville and their loss to Cairns would have to be close to Cairns smallest winning Margin so they are very competitive.
This season the other South teams are struggling especially Pool C but that is definetely not always the case. South West was strong last year. Logan, Gold Coast and Toowoomba all tied on 10 wins too, all beating teams like Cairns or Mackay and all beating Bundy and Gladstone too.
So true about the South teams getting sick of the Northern dominance coming through spending not development, although Cairns and Townsville are predominantly local this year. And if the South Teams had those AIS boys etc... in the line ups they would all be stronger again.
One shout out to the Northeners, Stephen Weigh and Nathan Jawai are from up there and were picked to represent their country at the heighest level, so I do see some Northern Boys "in that group"
