The Southern Districts Basketball Association has taken the first steps to win back the “Vince Hickey Memorial Trophy”, the most prized junior basketball trophy in the sport within Queensland by announcing the coaching staff today for the 2010 season.
“We had already won this year the “Harold Peacock Shield” for being the number one junior program in the largest junior competition Queensland has the BQJBC but things just did not go to plan and we fell short by 2 points to Brisbane Basketball this year after all the Classics were completed” offered President, Charles Ellis.
“Given that we are only half the size of Brisbane it is still a great effort and we thank all those volunteers, parents, staff and players who gave us such great service over the last twelve months”.
Southern Districts sadly says goodbye to Steve Lennon, Ian Gillard and Donna Rinaldi who have done so much over so many years.
“The reason we are so strong in the women’s program reflects on the efforts of these three greats. In the men we also say goodbye for the next season to Steve Edwards and Dylan Salfi who have elected to have a year off” stated Greg Vanderjagt, Development Director at Southern Districts.
Greg also steps away with his signing to the Gold Coast Blaze for the coming NBL season. “ I love the Spartans and they really do teach basketball the way it should be. For now though I have to focus on my NBL career but I will be back to work with the Association in 2010 and also look forward to playing SEABL next year with the Arrow Caravan & Towbar Spartans”.
All is not bad though with the likes of Penny Bairstow and Mathew Beggs returning in the younger age groups and also the return of Rebecca Stephens to the under 18 girls program. The oldest war horse of all also returns with Allan Ladewig coaching the under 14 boys team in 2010.
“While we are sad to have lost so many great coaching staff in one year the coming season is looking very bright. Donna is still involved and will be focusing on the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans in SEABL. We will be having a junior Lady Spartans squad from 2010 and Donna will also be working with these girls to make sure they are ready to step up to SEABL in the future. The coaching staff coming in brings new ideas and a lot of passion to the program” Ellis went on to add.
The try outs for all age groups will start in August and will go for four weeks before the final selection of squads is announced in September. Try out dates will be available on the Association website www.sdspartans.basketball.net.au. All coaching appointments will be posted on the website at 12 noon on Friday the 17th July.
Players wanting to tryout must be playing in the local competition and registered with basketball Queensland and the Association or apply for a transfer prior to August 15th. They must then commit to playing in the local competition throughout the representative season.
In other news the juniors Friday night competition is set for a restructure with a focus on standard in 2010. At a meeting conducted on Thursday the 16th July it was decided that in 2010 all age groups other then biddyball (under 8) would be odd ages.
This follows on from the huge membership drive performed in all local schools where every student was introduced to basketball through the Spartans men and women doing exhibitions and talking to the students about how to get involved. This will see the new season starting on Saturdays in October swell in membership.
Plans for a “Big Person Program” announced also with a “Sunday Shooters Program” set to start in September. The meeting was also advised that in September there will be two camps. The first managed by Donna Rinaldi who will focus on fun and skills with the second camp to be a full on basketball education where things will be stepped up with some of Queensland best coaching people brought in to ensure the camp is at the highest level covering playing, coaching and refereeing. Details will be placed on the Association website on August 15th.
