I agree with you about the 18's dates. North people have to come down after school Friday then get back late Monday. It's just not good at all.

Townsville had u18 classics 2 yrs in a row.

It needs to be the old format -one year north, next year south, year after that north and just keep alternating

Fairest for everyone.

Agree on u18s though its woeful

no it has been canned which is a shame great basketball played over the two seasons shame brisbane had player issues last year but it was still a very competitive comp.

also bq looking to run 8 minute quatres at under 18 classics as well

talk about the state body taking a massive step backwards in basketball....

they should look at maybe 4 pools of 3 rather than 2 pools of 6 if time constraints are an issue then it would be sudden death straight away and make upsets more costly. pool games will be over in one day or even have boys at one venue and girls at another.

I think that every 3 years there should be an all Brisbane venue for classics. We cant expect U12s to travel. So that leaves 14s,16s and 18s to rotate. But then you could be traveling year after year and rotating between Cairns (thankyou for a great classics this year), Townsville , Rockhampton and Toowoomba. I agree it isnt fair that the north teams have to travel to TON and Classics, but that is a pure geography problem. Is there an answer to this problem? NO. A north team will have to travel at least every 4/5 years even if it up in Cairns or the like.

But the U18s classics is an absolute joke 8 min untimed qtrs, 3 games a day (even if it a 'half' game). Who in thier infinite wisdom would come up with that idea? Are we digressing into a bunch of u12's? If I was in a north team i wouldnt even bother going to classics this season. A $1000 a player for a 3 day comp? COMON!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe the clubs voted against an U20's comp this year, so ask your association why there is no comp for these boys.

Agreed on Cairns running a great Classics this past season, pretty much the most enjoyable I have been to.

So what's this about U18 Classics games being running clock? First I have heard of it, all I knew was that 3 games/day and 8min/qtr was being proposed due to venue hiring costs for three court stadia and the final decision would be taken towards the end of this month, along with that of the season structure.

Doesnt matter. 4 x 10 minutes fully timed is FIBA standard and anything else is a joke at U/18 level. Wont be attending. Good open invite tournament in NZ will be far better experience for the kids.

Its pathetic.

Us North teams have to travel all the way to South Qld, which is a huge flight expense for a stupid 3 day tournament.
Then we play 8 minute not fully timed quarters, and play 3 games a day.
How is this preparing us players for Nationals?

How is it showing the state selectors what we have?

How does it let us enjoy the tounament like we normally do?
(get there one day and before you know it your leaving...)

Its a huge cost for us as it is and now its been made even more by having it on May Day long weekend over 3 days.

And we HAVE to come becasue if we dont, we dont qualify for state selection.

Just Stupid.

Can you let us know more about the tournie in NZ. Is any others? Might sound like a better option especially if it's fully timed!

Did you say it is stupid? Get a mirror and have a look in it, that's stupid looking back at you. U18 Nationals are in April in Terrigal, a month before the PROPOSED 18 Classics. This will have no bearing on who is selected for the State team, duh!!

You do not HAVE to do anything, and do I see a better proposal from you? It is simple, with the timing of 18 Nats, Qld classics are truely a non event these days. BQ want to ensure it continues as it is a money spinner for them.

It is up to you and your Association, if you are not happy with the 18 Classics do not participate. There are some good carnivals all around the country/world at this time of the year. Plenty of alternatives available to everyone, just don't tell us you HAVE to do anything, it is simply not true.

i guess it was a suggestion

i am from nz and you dont want to play in nz the standard is so much lower especally if you are in the top 6-8 in the state.

every now and again nz will produce some quality players and the odd team (waikato at the qld u14 classics is the example)

you would be better off orginasing a unoffical carvinal

Carnival Easter

Districts have applied to have a "B" grade and vets carnival at Easter next year. They also are hoping to host an under 18 division. This is not in competition to the Classics and should be seen as possibly a preparation event. BQ have been requested to sanction the event as is the correct process. Hopefully they will elect to have fully timed games. The return of carnivals in teh south is so important to our sport.

I think you will find that NZ boys didnt come 4th and alot of the time thats the NZ number one team in the nation.

Talk about having no IDEA, you corner the market. NZ got absolutley hammered in the 5/6 playoff by SA Metro in Tassie at Nationals, not state. NZ was in the easier pool this year and finished where they did last year; 6th. But hey why worry about the facts.

There is no such thing about easier pools at a national level. You still got too beat the good teams to win a nationals final. Im over hearing people saying this pool was easier then the other. Get over yourselves and just admit use didnt have a good tournement.

NZ overall standard may not be the same as Australia (yet) but with 10,000 people playing basketball in Auckland and the North Shore, thats a pretty dynamic basketball Association dont you think? Also the level of volunteer support, facilities and general community enthusiasm for the sport over there is streets ahead of anything we see here in good old Queensland. For sure, they would not think of playing their equivalent of the State Championships over 3 days with running clock, 8 minute quarters. If the U/18 standard is not quite the same as Australia (youd never know it judging by the standard of their National U/19 side) then there's an U/20 open tournament which would provide much better experience and development for our kids than a 2nd rate 'carnival' run by BQ and at around the same cost given the $ differential. With the Qld Sth teams now selected between a couple of desks at the Auchenflower office why would anybody bother playing and disrespecting the memory and status of what were once the State Classics?

Three days are really small for classics U18,should be four days, and that the 4x8 does not play but how is 4x10,so it took place quality of the contest, end teams would not have been so tired in comparision to three days, because boys are not machines.

ok ill do a mass reply to all to debate of the new zealand issue as i started it

i am from new zealand and do have an idea of this. we kiwis have our strenghs but we dont have the systems that australia have in place. we dont have the height to mach up with your bigs our form of shooting is poor we uasly shoot around 38% which is not enough to combat australia and most of our regional teams will only have one shooter the top 2 or 3 may have two or more but it is rear.

we send our top age group side to the australian nationals and it is an honor for us to play and we are truely greatful for this but when our #1 team in the nation cant beat a majority of your state teams it dose tend to show our depth.

it wasnt about bashing nz nor was i trying to rub the waikato team in anyones face it was an example of a team that could produce they smashed evryone in nz by 70+ points that year but its was to more to say why waste your money going to nz for next to no competition if you could get a 3 match series against a north or south isalnd regional team you may get some competition you would been better off spending your money out of state.

Some place that plays their competitions under FIBA rules would be an improvement on the format suggested for our U/18s in QLD.
