Rockets guard feels effects of gruelling trip (http://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/story/2009/07/22/rockets-guard-feels-effects-of-gruelling-trip/)
ROCKHAMPTON Stadium Nightclub Rockets point guard Rhys Martin is feeling the effects of a gruelling northern road trip last weekend.
Martin has been struck down by the flu ahead of Friday night's final home game of the regular season against the in-form Brisbane Capitals.
Rockets coach Neal Tweedy is confident Martin will be fit to take on a “dangerous” Brisbane team who arrive in Rockhampton on the back of six straight wins after last weekend's 125-119 overtime win over the Northside Wizards.

When will you all stop treating Brisbane as a throw away team. A split is hands down this weekend for the caps and a double is on the cards. Their depth is unmatched in the league as week in week out different players step up when needed. Cairns are clearly right now a step ahead of the rest of the league but the battle for secone is going to be awesome between Rocky, Mackay and Brisbane.

rocky couldn't beat mackay in mackay twice.........
lota good match ups this weekend best of the south vs best of the north will give us a much better idea of what to expect come semi's...
i'll think of something funny lata but:
Rocky v Bris n NS v Tville will be corkers from the top of the table
and
Suns v Us and Clips v SW should be good ones from the middle rankers

I agree!
Caps are going well - they need Benny to keep putting up good numbers, he is their top liner and needs to continue to dominate games at both ends of the court.
I think they will beat Rocky this weekend! Big upset but is a huge possibility... might struggle in Mackay the next night though, travel could hurt them

I love it how now people think Mackay is the team that people will struggle against.......makes me laugh.
well its been awhile since i've added my tips and i had a few complaints on facebook from my 2 fans so i'm sorry guys i've been busy but im back again...
Northside @ Townsville
this game is bigger then Hagrid on Steroids if NS want any credibility as a Championship team they need this win and i'm going to give it to em cos new Harry Potter is great...
Brisbane @ rockhampton
the other major blockbuster that will have Bogans bursting blood vessels and cowgals callin men bitches... as deep as Brissie are i dont see them beatin Rocky plus crowd...
South west @ maroochydore
quickness on quickness here... SW haven't had much to talk about this season an Clippers have been scaring everyone with their kamikaze style of play... i'm going with the Japanese
Brisbane @ Mackay
Mets are ridin the wave of bball love and Caps altho deep are a little on the veteran side of the fence which will give Mets fresh legs too much of an the edge...
Ipswich @ South west
great chance for Ippy to start the roll that will take them all the way to the Semi finals.. this finals format is Fffdd up as the outfits on Dance you ar$e off.. i'll go with Ippy just to make things interestin in the pool of ease...
Caboolture @ Gladstone
Last home game at the Powerhouse, apparently there's going to be 400+ at this one because of the Grandstand shootout and awesome Beer Pong championships happening after the game... my cash is on Nago/Robbo duo to take out both titles...
Northside @ Cairns
it was announced on the Local Cairns news that Marlins Veteran Joel Khalu will be retiring after this season so he will be inviting his 2000 facebook n 1500 myspace friends to every game until they win the State Championship to send him out on the high he deserves... Coach Khalu to take over Marlins in 2010 you heard it hear first folks...
Caboolture @ Bundaberg
ppl have been baggin the coach baggin the players baggin pretty much everythin bout Bulls so far this season i hope they get this win on a tired suns to give em a little more ammo to fight back with...
well there you have it another pearler of a weekend of bball in Australia's Premier winter competition... be good to your Mother...

Northside @ Townsville - Townsville need to win a big game and this is their chance to gain some credibility and defeat a high-flying team. Don't think Tragardh can outscore Cedar, Susnjara and Tovey. Heat by 8.
Brisbane @ Rockhampton - Brisbane won't be flustered by the noisy crowd however they have nobody to guard Reggie Golson or contain Rhys Martin if healthy. Rockets by 13.
South West @ Maroochydore - Like the Clippers style of play and South West have had a poor season. Zane and the Clippers to win by 9.
SATURDAY
Brisbane @ Mackay - Capitals old legs will be in for a real shock against the Meteors. Fitzgerald, Cook and Blanchfield all to get off. Meteors by 18.
Ipswich @ South West - Ipswich really are poor and don't deserve a finals position. Therefore Pirates by 11.
Caboolture @ Gladstone - Interesting game here, the Suns are on and off and I think Gladstone will turn them off. Esperaza, Kingma, Iwanicki, Siminac and Cochrane too much. Power by 13.
Northside @ Cairns - Northside will want to compete to show everyone they are the real deal but I think containing Grabau, Vale, Williams, Brebner and George is too tough. Marlins by 13.
SUNDAY
Caboolture @ Bundaberg - Suns will be coming off a loss in Gladstone and I think they will again suffer trying to guard Matt Hanson. Hanson to get player of the week and Bulls win by 10.
Bye- Towoomba & Gold Coast

THE Bundaberg Radiology Bears are hoping their last home game of the season will secure a playoff berth.
And import Kisha Lee believes the passionate Bundaberg crowd could be what gets her team over the line on Sunday afternoon against the Caboolture Suns.

Meanwhile, for the out of playoff-contention men, Sunday's game is about giving the loyal home fans another win.
“We want to finish in Bundy on a good note, especially for (Americans) Matt and Jason,” coach Michael Van Dongen said.

In the men's, the Townsville Heat will be looking to atone for their 112-90 defeat against Rockhampton Rockets last week with a win against fifth-placed Northside Wizards. The Wizards will also have a lot to play for if they want to be around come final time, after dropping to Brisbane Capitals 125-119 last weekend.

Quick picks..
Northside@Townsville
No Gibbo, no problem. Me picking the Heat to beat Rocky last weekend was as deflating as Watson missing that putt on the 18th. Crocs to win the title this year.

Bris@Rocky
If Rhys isn't 100% the Caps are a massive chance, but let's not forget Rocky haven't lost at home in like 3 years. Caps have the ability to shut down Rocky's key guys, Rocky will sneak home tho. Congrats to TC on 400, nearly killed me getting to 100...
Rocky by 3
South West@Mdore
Teys vs Tueta, young gun match-up. Teys has had a bit of the sophomore blues this year tho. Hard to see Clippers winning with such a depleted line-up, they've had a better year though and if they could have closed out some games where they had the lead could have 7 or 8 wins instead of 4. Zane would need 40+ for this to be close..
South West by 14
Bris@Mackay
Don't think Caps match up as well with Mackay and their ability to spread the floor. How is it out of Mackay's big 4 Jackson is the one with an NBL contract??? Caps are gonna cause problems come playoff time though with Fergy & Castle starting to get it going. Mackay too strong in this one..
Mackay by 13
Ipswich@South West
IF South West lose the night before this could get interesting, but South West still ain't gonna lose to em. Ippy to pump it inside to Stollie, Niesler with 30 against his old team.
South West by 8
Caboolture@Gladstone
Sorry that was a typo.. Ajayi @ Gladstone. Gladstone too much depth, Suns have good depth but don't use it. Saunders vs Nagas should be a trash talking battle for the ages.
Power by 17
Northside@Cairns
So Dwayne Vale has an NBL contract. Here's a list of guys who don't... Martin, Cook, Fitzgerald, Coenradd, Drew Willamson.. I was trying to follow the NBL this coming season but now realise it's just going to be a joke. Cairns will win tho, Grabau will own it and Deba will keep being underrated for what he does while the Kerry and Dwayne kneepads fest continues.
Cairns by 12
Caboolture@Bundy
V-Dogg suiting up this weekend. Is the Catman suiting up again, love to see him wind back the clock and bang down about 5 triples. The true tragedy is that Bundy aren't going to get the wooden spoon cos they have been a joke. 2 imports is all they have. Rocky to run circles around Moore and chalk up a triple double.
Suns by 20
Big Congrats to TC for hitting 400 this weekend thats an awesome milestone to hit as well as 17 years with the same team i take my hat off to the guy...
as for Happyrock being the birthplace of bogans yea we have our fair share but you guys are the beef capital of Australia it doesn't get much more bogan than that...
either way i was talking about your crowd an the only place with a higher percentage of bogans to normal ppl in their crowd is Ipswich... only place i've been to where the crowd has thrown rocks an cans through the windows of dressing room after the game

How is it out of Mackay's big 4 Jackson is the one with an NBL contract???
this would be because of his utility value coming off the bench. he plays solid defense and can hit shots, which is what you want from a bench player. also this season he is showing he can play physical if needed. ask reggie golson.
simple really

I'd say it's because he's a 'Gong local who can be a body at the end of the bench as a YAP player.
IMHO not legit NBL material - followed him last season alongside Trigger and Rhys, and he lacked energy on court along with anything else which would draw any other team's attention to him.

24-07-09, 15:50
Because we're New Age Bogans. It's just how we roll.
Dam straight about Ipswitch giving us a run for our money. Mokisins per capita. I don't think there's anywhere in Australia that could go head to head with Ipswitch for that honor.

Lucky for him your HO means nothing, as he has played extremely well for the Meteors and has shown great utility value.
It was a rhetorical question, which Ben answered. He's a local product, just like Vale. ONLY reason. Let's actually break this down...
Fitzgerald
Defense: Lockdown
Rebounding: Outstanding, crashes hard on both ends, averaged 13 per game in 07
3pt shot: Very good better than he has shown recently, prefers to attack
Mid-range: Outstanding from long-range step-back jumpers to 6 feet touch shots
Getting to the hoop: Can't be stopped, attacks hard at full speed with excellent body control, can finish with contact and shoots a very high number of free throws
Passing: Outstanding, as displayed by assuming a playmaking role this year and accumulating 8 and 9 assist games
Handle: Excellent, can play 1 and has a safe handle then can blow by you with explosive dribble moves
Vale
Defense: None, couldn't stop my cat
Rebounding: Averages 3 rebounds per game, doesn't seem too interested in crashing. It's not like the Marlins have bigs stealing his rebounds either..
3pt shot: Has an excellent trigger, only area in which he slightly beats Fitz
Mid-range: Does have nice touch but not in the same league as Fitz
Getting to the hoop: Can get to the hoop n finish but nowhere near as consistently as Fitz, would rather shoot the j and doesn't like contact
Passing: Doesn't, averages ridiculously low amount of assists and is sorely interested in scoring
Handle: Safe-ish, but can get flustered against quality guards
So, you've got Fitz who can do it all at 3 positions, or Vale, a perimeter shooting 2. Quite clearly, he only gets a contract due to loyalty from the Taipans. Don't get me wrong I respect that, but with the league reducing to 8 teams you would have thought there would at least be high quality talent on each team and that hasn't happened.
I think the Bye will get up over Toowoomba this weekend
A Big Double Header for the Bye this weekend
Gold Coast should win very very easily - Gold Coast by 47
Toowoomba - Yeah it will be a tough match, but the bye should win comfortably in the end - Bye by 23

Rockets up by 25. Caps missing Fergy but were just horrible on the night so had no chance. Martin pretty much did what he wanted and Brown or some other Rocket seemed to get a hand on just about every rebound. Golson sat out most of the game and only really scored in junk time.

Looking forward to a recap of last night's Brisbane @ Mackay match, which the Caps won 115-99. Whilst Brisbane has a solid squad, that would be the upset of the season considering they got pounded by Rocky the night before, and were backing up on their double-header. wow Caps beat Mets did not see that coming...
so after Cairns beat Rocky this weekend 1st round of finals should look like this?
Rocky in Mackay
Wiz at Caps
SW in GC
does this mean the Grand Finals Weekend will be Cairns?
before the final weekend of rounds this may or may not change but i'm going to put some odds on teams who will be contesting Grand final...
Cairns obvious short price favourites they've only lost 1 game an that was in the house of little pain dont think they will lose any more for the year...
grand final apperance $2:10
Champions $3.20
Rocky don't lose at home but have had trouble in Mackay not once but twice i'll add that it's pathetic to blame the refs twice and by looks of gemini's horoscope i think they maybe playing there again.. which is going to drive their price up just a little...
GFA $3:50
Champs $4:50
Mackay would of been shorter price then Rocky had they not been beaten so soundly on Satnite at home maybe they come out cocky or jus cant handle Caps style of game but they may have to beat em again to make GF so there odds are a little more stretched...
GFA- $4.30
Champions- $7.90
Northside have got the man in the middle who has been here done that a few times now, they've got the personal to get there but is Adam Gibson going to be there come finals time??? and if they make next round i think there is Friday nite games so that means potentially two of their 1st 5 may not be available for knockout semi... way too big ifs for any gambler but a good choice if your after a mid shot odds an all those guys are available...
GFA $9.70
Champs $14.80
Capitals have shown they've got what it takes being the only team from the south to beat a POD team by gettin Tville n Mackay this year... they also have great depth which is what's needed come finals time only thing against them is their legs with some teams catchin them with their pants down on 2nd game of Double headers this season and if i remember correctly you have to win two or three in a row on the GF weekend to become state champions...
GFA $ 11.20
Champs $ 18.10
Goannas have got a decent team but dont really see them getting past 2nd round of finals...
GFA $28:70
Champs $50:90
South West no disrespect guys but the Pool system got you here this year...
GFA $74:80
Champs $ 109.90

All the talk is that whoever wins in Cairns/Rocky hosts playoffs.
While this is probably true, not guaranteed.
I think Cairns will win and automatically host playoffs, but if Rocky does win they then have to beat Northside in Brissy too. Now they could easily be quite tired from playing Cairns then all that travel and Northside steal a mini upset.
If they lose both and Mackay beat Townsville, then Mackay will host the quarter against Rocky too.
Can Rocky win both games to host the lot?
Personally, I think not.

wow Caps beat Mets did not see that coming...
so after Cairns beat Rocky this weekend 1st round of finals should look like this?
Rocky in Mackay
Wiz at Caps
SW in GC
does this mean the Grand Finals Weekend will be Cairns?
before the final weekend of rounds this may or may not change but i'm going to put some odds on teams who will be contesting Grand final...
Cairns obvious short price favourites they've only lost 1 game an that was in the house of little pain dont think they will lose any more for the year...
grand final apperance $2:10
Champions $3.20

Based on the odds you just gave you predict that the caps wont beat Northside at auchenflower in the quraters - stop smoking crack. After they win the quaters anything can happen finals weekend. It will be a tough ask for them at this stage to win it all but they could be the team that surprises - and how good a story. biggest prediction if that all happens is an empty pantry for dale ryan to pick from for next season.

I don't think it's far fetched that the Caps could lose to the Wiz in the quarters. The teams went to OT a fortnight ago with the Wizards sorely missing JD. Obviously whether or not Gibbo is available will be a huge factor though.

dont think they had toby Z last time either... they ran out of legs in the OT and did not have a bench

Cairns will get top spot and host finals when (small if?) they beat Rocky.
Rocky has very small chance of top spot with 2 tough away wins. They'd probably be at least 50/50 to secure a home quarter final with 1 win, or they could be travelling to Mackay if they lose both and Mackay beat Townsville.
Quarters should be:
Rocky v Mackay
Brisbane v Northside
Gold Coast v South West
Semis may be:
Cairns v Gold Coast
Rocky v Northside (if whole team plays v Brisbane)
Finals:
Cairns v Rocky
Champion: Cairns
only two changes i think maybe be possible in your scenario is like you mentioned if Gibson doesn't play for Wiz then i would prob put money on Caps...
and dont Rocky need to win both to claim top spot an not play in Mackay as they would have the split on Rocky 2-1???
if thats the case they are yet to get the monkey off their backs in Mackay this season making for a very interesting rematch between Mets n Caps in the Semi's if those teams make it through...

You're right about Northside - I just checked the Boomers schedule and it's looking like Gibbo will be unavailble this round and also for the quarters. So I'd have Brisbane playing Rocky in the Semis.
Rocky have only lost 2 games this year and Mackay have lost 4 (after last week's shock loss) so the split does not come into play unless Rocky lose both this weekend and Mackay win against Townsville (leaving both teams on 4 losses).

Pirates beat goldy connicingly, the other day and only lost by 2 down there 3 weeks ago so its not a fore gone result.
Although they haven' t played as well this year - they have some offensive weapons so always a chance against whoever.
Caps with expereince should get the wiz
mackay for the upset...
cairns tough to beat at home

So has anybody got an opinion on the women's comp. Can Townsville win it again even with the rebuild of their team this year? There results have been very unconvincing this year even though they have only lost 2 games. If not them who is most likely to knock them off?

wish bishop rocky probably would have hosted and won the lot.
Gladstone would have to be next favs and both teams have not played full strength against each other. first game in gladstone went in double overtime but diana neeves did not play and when they played in townsville Nat hurst did not play.
Townsville have also added claudia brassard a solid veteren that has played in wnbl and europe I think.
Bundy would have been a chance but there import got injured so dont see them beating Caloundra in there pool to advance.
Caloundra could dominate if Traci Edwards was not so lazy she could honostly drop 60 on some teams
the others dont really have a chance..
I would think Gladstone vs Townsville and seeing how competative Hurst and Bibby are I cant see them loosing. but townsville are big and that is were Gladstone lack...
well of course i have an opinion thanks for asking :)
the finalist will be Power v Tville and IMHO they definitely have the team to win again it all depends on shooting % of Power chics...
the way those gals bomb from downtown they make Iraq n Afghanistan look peaceful... but if they aren't on the money then as shown by satnite game where Suns import was beast inside, they find it hard to stop a dominating big inside team..
but of course i'm leaning like the tower of Pisa to my gals to make even more franchise history an get State title this year...
