View Full Version : QBL 2009 - Week 15
FRIDAY
Rockhampton @ cairns
SATURDAY
Bundaberg @ Caboolture/caloundra/coastal
Gladstone @ Southwest
Brisbane @ Ipswich
Townsville @ Mackay
Rockhampton @ Northside
SUNDAY
South west @ Toowoomba
Bundaberg @ Maroochydore
Gladstone @ Gold coast
Let's do this one last time...
Rocky@Cairns
What a hostile environment this will be for Rocky, but Rocky once beat Ivan Drago in Russia and said "If I can change, and you can change, then everybody can change" so like Kevin Garnett anything is possible. From one thug to another I hope Aucoin just goes out and tries to biff everyone haha, basketball has gone soft. What happened to the days of Mahorn, Laimbeer and Oakley where guys could beat the crud out of each other. Think Cairns may have a touch too much class at home tho.
Cairns by 8
Bundy@Somewhere in the Sunshine Coast Area Suns
Bundy with 6 guys, wanna call in some more ring ins V Dogg? Brenton Mackie? What's his nickname again I have a mental blank, played GBL alongside father time... Rocky will dominate Bundy like they are Tommy Gunn, and as that movie was a joke as too will this game.
Somewhere in the Sunshine Coast Area Suns by 19
Gladstone@South West
Stop at Gin Gin for a steak boys, used to be the highlight of my road trips. Congratulations to Verle who wins Player of the Week at 63 years of age, phenomenal effort! Apparently his game winner was like one of those shots the computer hits on the buzzer for the win and it makes you want to throw the control...
Gladstone by 13
Brisbane@Ipswich
At least make this game entertaining and make it Brisbane@Milkmen. I think a bottle of red wine on the bench would add a touch of class to the game. Brissy boys will need to stay focused ahead of their q/f match-up with the wiz fiz.
Caps by 40
Townsville@Mackay
The box of chocolates never know what you're gonna get Heat. Mackay will wanna bounce back from their loss last week. Fitzy will dominate. Fitzy is such a cool nickname, Fitzy off neighbours, Fitzy a.k.a Frizy from Big Brother. How hot was Bree.
Mackay by 16
Rocky@Northside
Just like Clubber Lang the Wizards have been calling Rocky a paper champion so now once again Rocky needs to prove himself/itself. Actually if anything Cam is Ivan Drago, is he human? Can he be stopped? If Brown is allowed to play and the refs don't call touch fouls he may be able to bother him a little. Instead of Adrienne Rhys will shout out Danielle when they win.
Rocky by 10
South West @Tba
Last chance for the Mountain Men to grab a win. With South West playing the night before they are half a chance, Pirates rest your guys for next week and give Tba a win! But it your gonna do that give me the heads up so I can adjust my tips. Has Glove ever caught an oop? If he does it this game it will inspire them to a win.
Tba by 2 cos I believe in feel good stories
Bundy@Maroochy
It's re-union day at the Maroochy Basketball, Lawn Bowls, Croquet, Dog Walking and Cricket Club which wil see the return of some club stalwarts like Kevin "Un-bull-leave-a-bull" Day, Vern "lotion" Robateau, Ewan "Teddy Bear" Wilson and DaveMarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! This will inspire the Clippers to an unlikely victory playing 5 guards all under 6'4.
Clips by 8
Gladstone@Gold Coast
The power will be in for a shock when they find out they are up against Karmichael Hunt. After playing union overseas, he will not only play the next 3 years with the Gold Coast AFL team but also with the Blaze before finishing his career with the QLD Roar. Unless I'm mistaken barring a horror night from the line Gurney will take out the free throw% title, which now that I've said that I'm sure Nagas will instigate a foul frenzy and send him to the line 20 times in case he might miss 5 of 6.

]FRIDAY
Rockhampton @ Cairns - Absolute cracker-jack game. Both teams have the weapons, both teams have the defensive players to quiet the opposition. Where I think this will be won is the small forward position. Reggie Golson cannot and will not even attempt to guard Aaron Grabau but Grabau's focus will be lock the Yank down. And that he will. Cairns by 4.
SATURDAY
Bundaberg @ Caboolture - Have seen both teams a bit and I think Bundaberg are better than the Suns. Duncan Milne will foul out in ten minutes on Matthew Hanson, then Hanson will go to work and drop 40 and 20 to leave the league on a high. Bulls by 10.
Gladstone @ Southwest - Gladstone are better than South West but will miss out on finals action. This may give them the added fire to defeat the Pirates. Power by 11.
Brisbane @ Ipswich - Ipswich are poor, have been all season, Cann and Broom have both been poor buy's. Brissie to rotate and win by 20.
Townsville @ Mackay - The Heat are down Cameron Tovey and Josh Jenkins and will only suffer more pain in Mackay. Fitzgerald, Jackson, Blanchfield and Cook all to get 20. Meteors by 18.
Rockhampton @ Northside - Should be a great game. Unheard of road trip for Rockhampton. Backing up from a flight and tough game with Marlins. Then go face, Trigger and Coenraad. Wizards in a thriller by 3.
SUNDAY
South west @ Toowoomba - No interest in this one, be good to see Mountaineers steal a win but won't happen. Pirates by 19.
Bundaberg @ Maroochydore - Hanson's last game and he will go out firing. As will Moore looking to leave on a good note. Clippers are so skinny and will struggle. Hanson to get another 40 and Bulls by 8.
Gladstone @ Gold Coast - Goannas love the Sunday matches it seems. Scott McGregor only player in top 10 in points, rebounds and assists (I think). Will not be enough to beat the Power who have a solid starting five but not much else.
Wow I only just realised that Rocky have an away Cairns/Northside double on consecutive night. I'm sure the Wiz boys won't mind, but I'd be asking questions if I was a Rocky supporter.

Tovey in swine flu isolation (http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2009/07/31/67755_sport.html)
THE Crocodiles' NBL pre-season has hit an early hitch after high-energy swingman Cameron Tovey was quarantined with suspected swine flu.

Bears must sink the clippers to stay alive (http://www.news-mail.com.au/story/2009/07/31/bears-must-sink-the-clippers-to-stay-alive/)
The Bundaberg Radiology Bears are faced with a unique predicament on this weekend's road trip in their final two fixtures.
Because of their respective positions in their pool, the Bears must beat the Maroochydore Clippers on Sunday to progress to the finals.
....
Meanwhile, Bulls' assistant coach Mat Fleming said their preparation for the road trip had been disrupted with players succumbing to the flu.

US-bound Philp ready for crucial road trip (http://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/story/2009/07/31/us-bound-philp-ready-for-crucial-road-trip/)
Philp, 20, will join the Rockets' do-or-die final round road trip starting with the QBL's top-of-the-table blockbuster against arch-rivals the Cairns Marlins in Cairns tonight.
The Rockets must beat Cairns - who have not lost at home since April last year - and back up with victory against the Northside Wizards in Brisbane tomorrow night to secure home court advantage on grand final weekend.

Coach calls on injury-hit team to show spirit (http://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/story/2009/07/31/coach-calls-on-injury-hit-team-to-show-spirit/)
The third-placed Cyclones must win at least one of their games on the road against the Dolphins or Northside Wizards tomorrow night to cement their spot in the finals series and end Mackay's play-off hopes.
Not helping the Cyclones' cause this week has been more injuries setbacks, with three-point spe^^^^^^t Katrina Clifford ruled out with an ankle injury.
Forward Sarah Knox, one of the heroes in the Cyclones' hard-fought win over the Brisbane Capitals at Hegvold Stadium last Friday night, remains in doubt with a broken nose.
This follows the season-ending shoulder injury to Australian Opals centre Abby Bishop, who underwent surgery in Canberra this week.

I'd think at least the Rocky players would be quite alright with flying to both games instead of taking a bus. Beats many other road trips that they'd have been on I'm sure. If it were me I'd prefer to take on Northside first to clinch the home quarter final before having a shot at Cairns, but then Rocky probably think they can beat Cairns and like thinks just the way they are.

nothing wrong with the road trip- generally on those northern trips you sit in a car/bus for four hours. This is a 2 hour flight

You would have to think it's a make or break weekend definitely. But geez if they (rocky) win both of these games you'd have to put them absolute faves for the Title this year surely?

What a cracker of a game in Cairns. Exciting. Aucoin with the 3/4 court shot was awesome. Vale was on the money. I thought it was a bull call to give Brown a tech for "hanging" on the ring. I think that changed the momentum. If calls like that weren't made then i am sure rocky would've come away with the win. Thanks for the stream....good quality.

Force to face capitals without injury-hit skipper (http://www.qt.com.au/story/2009/08/01/force-to-face-capitals-without-injury-hit-skipper/)
IN THEIR quest to end their season on a winning note, the Ipswich Force have been struck a blow with skipper Dan Robinson an unlikely starter for tonight's QBL men's clash with the Brisbane Capitals.
The sweet-shooting guard is struggling with a strained hamstring as the Force aim to improve on their woeful 3-14 record in the round 15 match at the Ipswich Basketball Stadium.
While Robinson is in doubt, veteran centre Ryan Stolberg is expected to take his place despite being struck down with the flu during the week.

It was, watch the footage. Cairns players called it and refs agreed. Awesome dunk and absolute rubbish call....there's a dunk every blue moon in the Qabl and when it happens it's a tech...rubbish

Reality.
On way down the floor Brown and Vale run into each other and start jawing off at each other Brown screaming at ref about the contact. Both continue on with play.
Ball gets dumped to Brown he dunks as Vale rotates in his direction.
Hangs a little but then goes straight at Vale and starts talking it up - both players then jaw at each other up the court.
Tech was called for him going at and then proceeding to taunt Vale.
You want to offer excuses for momentum changes then maybe Rocky wouldn't have been in the game if the weak technical and ensuing weak calls didn't get them back in the game from the line late in the first quarter. Be that as it may they all even up as the techs did in this case.
On another note it was amazing how Martin and Golsen seemed to get only ball everytime they reached around the back of a ball carrier. Now both are long and Rhys is a good defender (Reggie is not), but out of 5+ times they must be exceptional to not get a foul. Well better than our Cairns boys who picked up 2 fouls in the same manner, as they should for such a poor low percentage/foul prone play.
Watching northside girls lost to rocky by 6. Wizards were with them the whole match cept the last 3 minutes... Now for the boys with not gibbo
Just watched the Rockets get by the Wiz by 10+ on Courtlive. Fairly close until the last quarter where Rocky extended their margin gradually. Trigger and Golson put up decent numbers.
Landy: the quality of video was generally good. Sound was constant, but the video itself started freezing often after the first quarter.

What happened at Hibiscus tonight .... South West not only upset Gladstone in the women, but thumped them! Men got the double as well.
No Hansen for Bundy against Coastal either.

Cedar knocks triple as time expires
Wizards, wizards, wizards...
men and female teams were up with rocky until the last 5 points. dissapointing. I wonder what would of happened if Gibbo was there. An Unusual off night from the 3 point line for the wizards with Coenraad and Davis not shooting as well as normal.
Everytime the rockets set up an open 3 oportunity they would hit it. every single stinking time. haha
anyway,
Northside v Caps.. woo. cant wait

ceders 3 on the buzzer was a prayer that got answered, very tough shot.
I note that South West and Goldie are matching up in both the mens and womens semis.
Women 3pm @ Hibiscus
Men 7pm @ Tallebudgera
I'm not sure how much hosting the games means to each associations, but is it reasonable to suggest an agreement could have been reached between both so that the two games were played at the same venue? I realise there is a two-hour gap between the games to allow supporters to travel between the two venues, but the sensible and better promotional tool would be to concede one game to the other venue (which has more seating??) for a greater spectacle. Gate/canteen takings split 50/50 or 60/40?? Just thinking out aloud.

Congrats to the Cairns Marlins and the Townsville Flames for finishing on top and winning hosting rigjts for finals. Despite all the talking up of other teams throughout the season the 2 premier programs in the state for men's and women's basketball do it again.

Power women had a lid on there hoop, could not buy a bucket at times and got beaten by the better team on the night. was a different story the next day on the goldy.
The mens team had no energy and did not seem to get going till 5 mins left in the game but to late. On the gold coast they were struggling untill coach smith put himself in the game in the 3rd and really changed the momentum....He still has game.
Anthony Esparza has to be player of the week with good numbers against south west and a tripple double against gold coast.:D
Colby Stefanovic with 30 rebounds..........DAM.:eye-popping:
josh darragh had a tough 10 turnovers.

Im not a rocky fan per se, but it was a shame to see martin make, what would have been, a game tying 3 pointer but instead the refs call a foul and send him to the line for 2. Im just using this as an example where the refs really need to recognize the advantage of the foul. So martin should get fouled, make a 3 pointer and it not count? and it's not as if the refs here are known for their lightning quick reflexes.... Congrats to Cairns! they did a great job! i just wanted to use that as an example of how unexperienced the refs in this league are. isnt there a workshop or something they can attend?? plus, who that was there wouldnt have wanted that game to go on for 5 more thrilling minutes??

Was at the last 2 Clippers games and want to congratulate the team on some outstanding and exciting play
I thought they would be destroyed with no bigs and no bench but they were fabulous
Great to see very enjoyable and impressive Well done team
Vale was going at JB? Hahaha will someone knock that punk out already. Big shout out to Tim Labka and his outstanding effort keepin the monster 6'2 Stefanovic off the boards, money well spent Bundy! Was a pleasure to see the Cat still able to shoot the lights out, and Heidi Freeburn is not only hot as but by far my favourite chick to watch play she is incredible! Rocky to be better for the experience on Friday night and win it all in 2 weeks..

Agreed. He made the 3, whistle blown after the shot went in and went to the line for 2. Does not make sense and i just want to say about the Justin Brown dunk tevhnical. He didn't get the 2 points for the dunk.
Anyway...congrats on all the teams making it to the playoffs...an exciting array of games to be played!

I have a very fast connection and there is nothing wrong with my CPU. I assumed that the service started freezing as soon as the number of people watching the game increased (as would have been the case on Saturday ... smooth for first quarter, then decreased quality after). Bit rough telling me something is wrong on my end.
