Just wondering why the Spartans website can manage to show the SEABL result 30 minutes after the game finishes, along with a speil, but can't show the results of the Junior grand finals held last Friday and Saturday. The complete junior season results have disappeared from the fixtures/results option and the final games have never appeared, as far as I can tell.
I am sure (from experience) that the number of kids and players in the stadium on a Saturday would be greater than the total attendance at SEABL games, yet Districts continue to treat their Juniors like shit. ( I notice that the Mon-Thu Seniors results are posted fairly quickly.) This is an example of why many talented juniors are leaving Districts: they (or more likely their parents) are tired of being treated with contempt by the Districts old guard. The comparison with Logan and Northside (but not BBI, they seem to have similar problems!) is great - they encourage and embrace their junior membership. Wake up and smell the Java, Alan, before it's too late!

Something must be right at Districts. Two teams going to nationals. They finished third in Vince Hickeyin 2008 after winning it in 2007. People forget that Districts are no longer a large club with Redlands, Logan, Wizards and other Associations growing. They also are now not just a basketball club as they will be hosting hockey and futsal in 2009. The practice of shrinking to better manage resources seems to be working. How do you exlpain that they can compete in SEABL if everyone is leaving. Makes no sense. Also word is that in 2009 they are about to take on at least two major schools into there program. I think you just wanted some glory but you wanted someone else to do the work. Good luck at your new Association.

BMD offers boost to local junior basketball team

Junior basketball within the Southern Districts Basketball Association has received a boost this week following a two year sponsorship commitment from the BMD Group (BMD).

Based at the Clem Jones Youth Centre, the Spartans Under 14 girl’s team recently took out sixth place at the National Championships in Adelaide – a result General Manager Allan Ladewig attributes to assistance from BMD.

“It was a great result for the girls and with BMD on board to continue their support for the Under 16s team next year, we’re looking forward to future competitions,” he said.

“With this commitment we can now rest assured that the efforts by the team this year will not be lost through time.”
“The support from BMD combined with other local businesses and families has also allowed the Spartans to purchase the equipment needed to ensure young members within our community receive the best possible chance at success at all levels of competition.”

As part of the arrangement, the team will also shortly receive a shooting machine – the first for any Association in Queensland.

“We are very lucky to have such a strong corporate supporter in the community,” he said.

BMD is Australia’s largest privately-owned civil construction, consulting and urban development organisation.

Under the leadership of Group Board Chairman and Managing Director Mick Power, AM, BMD has grown from an annual turnover of $600,000 in its first year of operation (1979), to $646 million in the 2007/2008 financial year.

“We have always maintained our sense of commitment to the local community and we are proud to be associated with the Spartans junior program,” Mr Power said.

The shooting machine is expected to be in place by February 2009 just in time for the Spartans junior program as they prepare for the various State Championships.

Junior Association Meeting Minutes February 10th 2009

Agenda:

1. Season age groups It had been suggested that the seasons should change age groups to assist the representative programs in identifying players for coming seasons. After a great deal of discussion no resolve on the matter could be reached. AL suggested that the matter be opened up to all clubs and a vote taken in April. Delegates are urged to ensure that each club and school address the issue.

2. Elite Programs GV informed the meeting that the Association would be doing an UPPS program after Easter. This was to be done on two different levels to ensure all players received adequate development. Players would have to apply in future.

3. Holidays Camps GV advised that we would doing future camps at two different levels. AL also advised that SDBAL was talking to Andrew Gaze about a one off camp later in the year.

4. Shooting Program The shooting machine has landed and would be available for hire. GV was writing out a program for players.

5. Score bench course Currently being advertised. All parents of representative teams should undertake the training.

6. Coaching Course Level “0” & “1” Applications already out.

7. Representative teams AL advised that unless more coaches were found the Association would only be having 2 representative teams per age group in the coming season. Clubs are urged to encourage people to get involved in the UPPS program so they are more confident with applying for representative teams.

8. Fundraising Disco The Association intends to start doing fundraisers for the junior representative teams. Clubs and schools are urged to get behind these to reduce cost for families. The Spartans men program would be main driver on this.

9. SEABL A reminder that the SEABL games start on the 14th March. Both teams are of standard and clubs and schools are encouraged to get all juniors to watch what will be best basketball available in south east Queensland.

10. Friday Night The Friday night senior boys competition was about to under go a huge change with private schools entering. Club team need to start looking at current standard as only three teams would be allowed to compete. Hopefully in future this will flow onto girls competition.

11. Inter Association games AL advised that he would again be approaching BBI and Logan to consider a cross-town competition in both men and women’s divisions. This would support a better standard of competition ensuring a better development across all age groups.

12. Rep Coach wanted The Association made an urgent plea fro clubs and schools to start work on improving the coaching standard of the juniors. People looking to get involved need to call GV on 3398 2790 to discuss getting involved.

13. Rep players The local competition has rules set for how many representative can play in a team at one time within a season. Please read the rules carefully as they will be enforced after the Easter break. The Association encourages the better players to play against each other to develop skills. This also allows other players to develop by playing with and against the better players. All “Division One” players must play in a Metro age group that they are allowed to represent the association at.

Rep players points system Div One 3.5
Div Two 2.0
Div Three 1.5

A team of eight may not have more then 20 points in a team. This will be checked on the nominations. Teams must have at least 2 “one” pointers in a team.

For “Reserve Grade” a team of eight may not have more then 12 points in a game. If you reduce to 7 players then it would be 11 points and so on.

Things are looking bright at Southern Districts with the junior program showing everyone they are a following in the footsteps of the senior program taking out the Harold Peacock Shield. This is the second year in a row.

This award is presented by Basketball Queensland to the best junior program within the competition in the South East of Queensland in age groups from under 12 through to under 18 in both male and female competition. It started in October 2008 and finished on Saturday night when all grand finals being played at the Brisbane Entertainment centre at Boondall.

“We are continually looking at ways to develop our junior players and I personally want to thank all those volunteers who have coached and managed our teams over the past season” offered Charles Ellis, President of Southern Districts. “The development program, UPPS, we run between seasons is proving the difference between us and the other Associations. Our under 12 girls, under the direction of Mathew Beggs, went undefeated and our under 14 boys Cup team both won with most teams finishing in the top four”.

The Under Pinning Program starts again after Easter and this year will have again the best coaching staff available including many former NBL and WNBL players involved. It is hard work but if a young player wants to get better then they must be willing to do the extra. Persons interested in attending should contact Greg Vanderjagt on 3398 2790 during business hours.

On Friday night the Arrow Caravans & Towbars Brisbane Spartans won their fourth straight SEABL game in a row in another thriller against newcomers the Dandenong Rangers, 114 – 111 in Brisbane on Friday night.

With the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans enjoying the weekend off, the Brisbane Spartans men were the showpiece event for the night and they didn’t disappoint.

After a sluggish start and six points behind at the end of the first quarter, the Spartans turned things around in the second, outscoring the visitors 39 – 24 in that period, enjoying a nine point lead into the main break.

The lead was reduced to just five points at the end of the third, setting up a mouth watering fourth quarter of SEABL basketball. A fiery clash erupted midway between Spartans Tyson Demos and Rangers Vince Inglima who exchanged words, resulting in unsportsmanlike fouls and many free throws.

A total of 77 free throws were attempted from both teams during the stop-start game.

Last weeks SEABL Player of the Week, Chris Goulding lead with 26 points with Greg Vanderjagt adding 25 points and 13 rebounds with Ash Cannan chipping in a valuable 23 points against his former team.

Vince Inglima led all scorers with 35 points and Dusty Jura close behind him with 29 points for the Rangers.

The Brisbane Spartans have now won four straight games and are yet to taste defeat this season and are sitting on top of the Eastern Conference SEABL ladder.

“It obviously makes a big difference having a complete team at the start of this thing,” Spartans head coach Bruce Palmer said. “In previous seasons at this time, we are 0 – 3 or 1 – 4 or something like that waiting for NBL players to come in. This is a marathon not a sprint. But I am very happy in where we are positioned right now,” he concluded.

In the post game function, Spartans welcomed back super-star guard Adam Gibson, the current NBL’s best defender and two-time NBL Championship winner, who presented the post game MVP award to his former Brisbane Bullets and Spartans team mate, Chris Goulding.

Both Brisbane Spartans men and women teams will be back at the Carina Basketball Stadium this Saturday night with the Carina Leagues Club Brisbane Lady Spartans playing the Launceston Tornadoes at 6pm and the Arrow Caravans & Towbars Brisbane Spartans Men taking on Albury/Wodonga Bandits at 8pm.

Junior Women Initiative
18-06-09, 13:27
Spartans Women’s Initiative
The Southern Districts Basketball Association is seeking individuals who are interested in coming together to aid in the development of our junior ladies players and also to enhance the level of competition of our local leagues.
It has become a growing concern of the association in the drop off in standard of play and number of players in our Friday night local competition. Currently we have 3 under 16 girls’ teams and 1 under 18 girls team in our representative program.
It has become evident that not all of these players are representing their local club and school teams on a regular basis. This is a major part of the reason for the drop in standard and lack of interest in our female competition.
With the introduction of our new scoring system later this year we will be able to track the number of games played by each individual player. Representative players in 2010 will be required to play for a club team and play in at least 90% of games for their club in order to be eligible to play representative Basketball at Southern Districts. Coaching staff who do not enforce this rule will be replaced as our focus will be on participation over the next twelve months
Although this is at this stage problem we will be are committed to improve the situation and return our local competitions here at Southern Districts to what they once were. This year the launch of the “Championship League” for the male players on a Friday night replacing the existing metro competition has been a huge success. We are hoping to continue this league in 2010 and beyond.
The association is seeking a panel of individuals who are willing to brainstorm and assist the association in ways which we can improve the number of players and standard of our Friday night local competitions. To express your interest in being a part of this panel please contacts Greg Vanderjagt at the SDBAL office on 3398 2790 during business hours.
Regards
Greg Vanderjagt

MEDIA RELEASE

The Southern Districts Basketball Association has taken the first steps to win back the “Vince Hickey Memorial Trophy”, the most prized junior basketball trophy in the sport within Queensland by announcing the coaching staff today for the 2010 season.

“We had already won this year the “Harold Peacock Shield” for being the number one junior program in the largest junior competition Queensland has the BQJBC but things just did not go to plan and we fell short by 2 points to Brisbane Basketball this year after all the Classics were completed” offered President, Charles Ellis.

“Given that we are only half the size of Brisbane it is still a great effort and we thank all those volunteers, parents, staff and players who gave us such great service over the last twelve months”.

Southern Districts sadly says goodbye to Steve Lennon, Ian Gillard and Donna Rinaldi who have done so much over so many years.

“The reason we are so strong in the women’s program reflects on the efforts of these three greats. In the men we also say goodbye for the next season to Steve Edwards and Dylan Salfi who have elected to have a year off” stated Greg Vanderjagt, Development Director at Southern Districts.

Greg also steps away with his signing to the Gold Coast Blaze for the coming NBL season. “ I love the Spartans and they really do teach basketball the way it should be. For now though I have to focus on my NBL career but I will be back to work with the Association in 2010 and also look forward to playing SEABL next year with the Arrow Caravan & Towbar Spartans”.

All is not bad though with the likes of Penny Bairstow and Mathew Beggs returning in the younger age groups and also the return of Rebecca Stephens to the under 18 girls program. The oldest war horse of all also returns with Allan Ladewig coaching the under 14 boys team in 2010.

“While we are sad to have lost so many great coaching staff in one year the coming season is looking very bright. Donna is still involved and will be focusing on the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans in SEABL. We will be having a junior Lady Spartans squad from 2010 and Donna will also be working with these girls to make sure they are ready to step up to SEABL in the future. The coaching staff coming in brings new ideas and a lot of passion to the program” Ellis went on to add.

The try outs for all age groups will start in August and will go for four weeks before the final selection of squads is announced in September. Try out dates will be available on the Association website www.sdspartans.basketball.net.au. All coaching appointments will be posted on the website at 12 noon on Friday the 17th July.

Players wanting to tryout must be playing in the local competition and registered with basketball Queensland and the Association or apply for a transfer prior to August 15th. They must then commit to playing in the local competition throughout the representative season.

In other news the juniors Friday night competition is set for a restructure with a focus on standard in 2010. At a meeting conducted on Thursday the 16th July it was decided that in 2010 all age groups other then biddyball (under 8) would be odd ages.

This follows on from the huge membership drive performed in all local schools where every student was introduced to basketball through the Spartans men and women doing exhibitions and talking to the students about how to get involved. This will see the new season starting on Saturdays in October swell in membership.

Plans for a “Big Person Program” announced also with a “Sunday Shooters Program” set to start in September. The meeting was also advised that in September there will be two camps. The first managed by Donna Rinaldi who will focus on fun and skills with the second camp to be a full on basketball education where things will be stepped up with some of Queensland best coaching people brought in to ensure the camp is at the highest level covering playing, coaching and refereeing. Details will be placed on the Association website on August 15th.

REPRESENTATIVE TEAM GUIDELINES 2009/10

The Southern Districts Basketball Association would like all coaches to read and understand the following rules and guidelines for the 2009/10 representative season. The guidelines are in place to help both you as the coach and the association make the season as enjoyable and successful as possible for all players, coaches, managers and parents. If you have any queries about any of the guidelines that are put in place by SDBAL please do not hesitate to contact the executive committee with you concerns.

1. SDBAL must be informed of team managers no later than September 1st, 2009. This position may be filled by an individual of your choosing but must be approved by the SDBAL executive committee.
2. Appointed team managers MUST attend the managers’ introductory meeting. Regardless of whether or not they have managed a team in the past, this meeting is compulsory for all team managers as specific guidelines will be addressed during this meeting.
3. Coaches need to inform association of their dress shirt size no later than September 1st 2009. Shirts will be ordered soon after this date to ensure all coaches have them by BQJBC grading weekends.
4. All coaches must be dressed appropriately for all training sessions and games. No thongs or sandals are to be worn during any training or game. Coaches need to set an example for players and parents. During games the Spartans dress polo must be worn to ALL games. Male coaches must wear either dress shorts or slacks. Not track pants, training shorts. Closed in footwear must be worn at all times. Female coaches may wear skirts, dress shorts or pants while coaching at games with appropriate footwear.
5. Training time requests should be by now sent to the SDBAL office. Teams are allowed one training session per week from 4:00 – 5:55pm and one session on a Sunday for 90 minutes. If you have not sent your training time requests to Carina Crockford at the SDBAL office this must be done by August 1st otherwise you will miss out on your allocation.
6. If you wish to cancel training during the week or on the weekend you must inform the SDBAL office 48 hours prior to this session. We have a lot of teams who all want more training times and if we are able to offer your training time to another team we will.
7. While this will also be covered at the managers meeting, all players must be in the same attire for game warm-ups and training sessions. Players must wear the Spartans warm-up top for games or the team uniform. No dress shirts or jumpers to be worn during warm-ups and game. Spartans reversible training singlets to be worn to all training sessions.
8. In the Spartans and Trojans teams, these are development teams. Players in these teams where possible should be 80% bottom aged players to ensure player development continues for the following season.
9. Players in Spartans teams have no expectation of minimum amounts of court time. Spartans teams are division one teams and expected to be successful. While it is always nice to ensure all players take the court, it is not a requirement in Spartans teams.
10. For Titans and Trojans teams all players must play at least one third of every quarter. These are development teams and players need to be given the opportunity to develop their skills which you have taught them in training into a game situation. In a 40 minute game all players must play a minimum of 14 minutes per game.
11. All players, coaches, managers and parents are required to sign the association code of conduct forms. These forms will be issued during the managers meeting and must be returned to SDBAL prior to the BQJBC grading tournament.
12. All coaches, assistant coaches and managers must hold a current blue card. If you do not hold a blue card or it has expired please contact the SDBAL office for assistance on how to ensure that you have your blue card. This is a requirement of working with children in any capacity.
13. This year we are lucky to have Rodney Pedwell available to our rep teams to utilise. Rodney is a personal trainer who worked with the UP’s Development and Elite program throughout the offseason. He is available to all teams and it is recommended that you use the service that he is able to provide. Rodney can be contacted on 0418 982 807. Any costs incurred through this service are at the expense of the team. For more information on what he can do for your team please contact Rodney direct.

Big Associations

This is just an example of how far we are behind in Queensland in the numbers game alone. A story out of Melbourne. I deleted names at end of email.

Subject: Big associations?

Heard from a friend in Melbourne that Dandenong 14 girls (going to Perth) have already raised $47,500-00, helps when you have 11,000 registered juniors, 20 courts, lots of local sponsors.

Time for BQ and Associations together talk about a strategy that works. This will have to involve the schools and it will need history to be the motivation rather then the oppressor.

It's about time somebody had the heart to step up & try to get Qld out of it's basketball slump. With all the stories I have heard about the southern clubs having so many members, I do believe that if Qld banded together & had some sought of program to recruit players from an earlier age through the schools we mightn't get as many members but we will at least be a lot stronger & deeper.

Clinics Coming
20-08-09, 09:19
For those that are not aware Spartans will be starting a series of clinics starting on Sunday mornings in mid-September covering a lot of areas.

The new shooting machine will be involved in the shooters program and they will also be doing a big kids program plus many more.

You will need to go to the website www.sdspartans.basketball.net.au in September to access the exact details but most programs will be 5 week blocks for approx $75. Coaching staff will be of quality and numbers limited per program to esnure quality.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

The Southern Districts Basketball Association will be offering the following programs for our members starting in October. These programs will be available by application through our website or from forms placed in the canteen after the 23rd September.

Players will be selected from the applications for some programs with the other programs being allotted according to a time and date schedule. Membership of SDBAL will receive priority of service but we encourage athletes from all schools and other Associations to apply.

Under 20
We will not be competing in the BQ under 20 competition but will be doing an elite training program that will have players selected to compete in two different programs (focus on youth) we will be competing in throughout the 2010 year. One team from the two squads will also compete in the proposed SEABL “D” League Challenge in 2010 in Melbourne.
Both teams will compete in competitions that we are currently negotiating. They will be true feeder programs to our SEABL program from 2010.

Shooters program
We will be operating three sessions every Sunday where the best shooting coaching staff we can locate will work with no more then 10 athletes in a session. The session that a person is placed into depending on age and standard. This will be an ongoing program running over 5 week blocks.

BIG Man
Every team needs them and they will be restricted to no more then eight players in any one session. These sessions will most likely be after school and again players will be placed into sessions depending on standard and age.

All three programs will be conducted under strict guidelines that should allow an athlete to develop skills required to play at the highest level should that be their personal desire. Athletes not willing to do additional work away from the training sessions should not consider applying.

MEDIA RELEASE

After a great year of competition in the South East Australian Basketball League where the Carina Leagues Club lady Spartans won the Championship and the Arrow Caravan & Towbar Spartans finished second work has already started on the next generation with the recruitment of Mr Peter Pendle to the program.

Pendle who played a major role in coaching Queensland State teams and the Brisbane Bullets has joined the Southern Districts Spartans in the junior development area where he will spe%%%%%%e in the under twenty programs for both the men and women.

On Friday afternoons he will also start working on the bigger players in all age groups in preparation for the upcoming junior representative season.

“I am looking forward to a return to the sport after a few years off” he offered. “The Spartans have come a long way and I really believe I can help them in the junior ranks where they have so much talent”.

A student of the game Peter has also been one to do what ever its takes to improve both himself and those who he is coaching. He has attended power house NCAA programs in the USA such as Puget Sound, University of Nebraska and University of Chicago, ensuring his techniques are at the cutting edge. This he funded himself as part of his commitment to excellence’.

Pendle went on to say “I had the honour of working with Mr Vince Hickey, Mr Basketball himself, for seven years at Brisbane in the early years of the development of our sport and I have been the head of the Cairns basketball program as well as the North Queensland Development Officer along with numerous State coaching positions, so I am confident that the knowledge and experience which I will bring to the Spartans junior program will assist both the coaching and playing areas. I will be striving to ensure everyone involved can reach their full playing potential, whether this is at local, national or international level”.

“We had been looking for someone for so long that could start to re-ignite the junior program and when we became aware that Peter was available” stated Allan Ladewig, General Manager. “He brings a work ethic and knowledge that will help us at all levels”.

“The programs that Peter will be working on start with the under twenty men and women and will be followed by the most extensive shooting program ever offered in Queensland starting in February and while we waiting for that he will be working with our best big players. This is only the start and by March next year we hope to have more programs on offer that will assist both the p[layers and the parents so they can all enjoy the sport’ Ladewig went on to say.

Applications for position within the programs can be obtained by going to the Southern Districts website www.sdspartans.basketball.net.au

Leroy to Lead

LOGGINS TO LEAD

The under 17 boys program at Southern Districts just got a lot better with the successful recruitment of basketball legend Leroy Loggin’s to the Association.

The boys team will travel to Port Macquarie in January as part of the upgraded development programs being put in place by the Spartans as they seek to create a pathway for the juniors as they move towards the senior ranks.

“We will do whatever it takes to ensure the Spartans are home grown in future years as we compete in the South East Australian Basketball League” offered President, Charles Ellis. “We want to be the best and programs such as this are just the start of what we will be doing throughout 2010”.

Loggin’s was for many years the face of the Brisbane Bullets and lead the team in the glory days of the sport in Brisbane. In the years since his retirement he has been active in establishing the Leroy Loggins Foundation (The Foundation) in direct response to his observation that children from Indigenous and minority backgrounds did not have access to the same support and development activities and sporting opportunities as other children.

As such the Foundation was set up to assist the social and developmental well-being of boys and girls from any background, but undertakes a large proportion of its active courses and programs for the benefit of those from Indigenous and Islander backgrounds.

Over the last six years the Foundation has assisted hundreds of children throughout South East and West Queensland through the provision of educational programs, basketball clinics, and social/cultural development programs with numerous local school, sporting and charity organisations to develop their physical and social well-being while also encouraging participation in school and sport for groups that might otherwise not have the means to take part.

The Foundation has an extensive network of schools, sporting associations and charities that it has partnered with. From this network, demand for education and training development courses has increased steadily each year and, on average, existing courses offered by the Foundation have seen an increase in attendance of approximately 50% during that time period.

The overriding impetus behind the development of the Foundations latest project – the Sporting Chance Academy concept is to develop a solution at a local level to issues identified through consultation with key community groups, schools and Indigenous support organisations that impact on Indigenous children throughout Brisbane.

Leading the under 17 girls program will be Steve Lennon who has played a huge role in the senior and junior ranks at Southern Districts over many years.

“The talent that we will be taking to the tournament is testament to the high quality within our junior ranks and I am looking forward to competing against some of Australia’s best young basketballer’s” he stated.

On the local scene this week also see the start of the “Big’s” Program where the taller athletes will be coached by former Brisbane Bullet assistant coach Mr Peter Pendle.

“Southern Districts has so many great athletes and they are now putting money and resources into developing the players which is great to see” Pendle stated.

The Southern Districts Basketball Association will be opening up many such programs over the next three months and have elected to open up programs to athletes from other Associations.

Dear Coach / Manager

Good luck to all teams this week as the BQJBC starts. We know everyone will be doing their very best and no matter the result as long as you have done your best then we are all winners.

Below are a few points that may affect you and your team and we ask that you make sure your parents and players are aware of all matters raised.

1. Representative dress shirts sizing. Players must try on gear in clothing store by this Thursday. The gear will be ordered on Friday 30th October.
2. The store will also have more Spartan bags from early next week. Gear fro supporters is now on sale also.
3. Can all those interested in the 2010 season (age groups etc) please make sure that you keep Tuesday the 17th November. This will hopefully be at the Carina Leagues Club but I will confirm the time and location at a later date. At this meeting we will decide 2010 age groups etc. If your club or school is not at this meeting then they will miss out on the input required.
4. A level “0” referees course will be done here at the stadium on Sunday 8th November starting at 9am till 1pm. Please make sure all players and parents are aware of this.
5. New scoring system. In late November your bench people will be approached during the local games so we can start training for 2010. If you could make sure on that day parents are aware so we can teach as many as possible.
6. Expression Interest. We are looking for people to be “trained as trainers” for the new scoring system. This will be a way to make some money while helping the Association. You must be willing to work during the week nights and on Saturdays.
7. People who would like to be involved in setting our new “5 Year Strategic Plan” should contact myself on sdbal@bigpond.net.au . This will most likely happen in late November and all suggestions are welcome.

The coaching forum conducted by Adelaide 36er’s Defensive Coach, Liam Flynn, at Carina on Tuesday night was fantastic. The break downs he did for defensive foot work on the floor for both the players and coaching staff in attendance was amazing.

The offensive principles which he introduced I am sure will be implemented in the not to distant future also. He made things seem so simple.

The pity was that not one person from another association took advantage of the free offer. We need to ask ourselves if we really want to get better when we fail to consider other options.

Liam is a great coach and deserves to be where he is at. Those who did attend will be better for it and we look forward to more education when he returns.

Thanks Liam.

MEDIA RELEASE

An urgent SOS sent out by Southern Districts Basketball Association, based at the Clem Jones Youth Centre in Carina last week has been rewarded with professional USA coach and trainer, Mr Jason Wright making himself available to coach the under 17 boys team travelling to Port Macquarie to compete in the Pacific Slam, one of Australia’s Premier junior tournaments.

Jason Wright is one of the finest basketball trainers in the United States. He brings a strong sense of discipline and creativity to the hardwood. His students are some of the most fundamentally sound AAU, high school, collegiate and professional basketball players in the world.

As a former Division 1 student athlete at the University of New Orleans, Jason earned the respect from his peers through his intense work ethic and hard-nosed approach to the game.

He has competed against such NBA greats as Derek Fisher, Allen Iverson and Jason Kidd, played professionally overseas in Europe, and was a successful walk-on at the Seattle Supersonics training camp before seriously injuring his achilles tendon. In 2001, he formed JW Basketball and since that time has become Southern California's premier basketball trainer. Jason is also engaged by high schools and colleges for high level spe^^^^^^t coaching.

Over many months Southern Districts Basketball Association has been in discussion with Jason with a view to create a pathway for athletes to US high schools and colleges. Initially Jason was to come to Australia later in the year to help the Spartans to set up a program to help basketball players be “high school and college ready”.

After receiving an SOS from the Spartans in the last few days Jason finalised and rearranged his travel itinerary to be arriving in Australia at 12.45am Friday 15th morning from Italy, via Dubai and Singapore, a travel time of 25 hours and 15 minutes.

Jason got the call whilst in Italy on a one week coaching stint and will be taking over from Leroy Loggins as the Head coach in Port Macquarie where the Spartans under 17s men basketball team is heading off to at 9.00 am from Carina stadium only 8 hours after his arrival.

Leroy Loggins has been engaged by a Chinese province with a view to be part of the academy of sport, and will be jetting to China on the 14th January for an initial 10 day stint. Leroy leaves with mixed emotions, but is sure the players will make him and SDBAL proud and with the knowledge that a high calibre coach in Jason Wright will finish the job off that he started with this squad.

Although Jason time is limited due to his coaching commitments in the USA, he has made himself available at no cost to do some clinics for Southern Districts on the 21st January.

Jason Wright Basketball Clinic
Thursday 21st January

This Thursday the Association has been offered the services of Mr Jason Wright (USA Coach) who is currently working with our junior men’s team in Port Macquarie.

I watched his coaching in sessions and at a game yesterday and I am very impressed. The level the boys have risen to after only two short days is amazing.

Jason has made himself available to our members and I urge both coaching staff and players to attend his sessions.

In the USA Jason works with college players trying to prepare for NBL tryouts and also with NBA players. Last week he was working with the Italian National Men’s team in Italy when asked by Leroy Loggins to help our under 17 boys team out. He flew here direct.

The sessions will only be for an hour at a time with some on court work and one session for older players who may be looking to attend a USA College.

This is a great chance for our players and one that should not be missed. Some teams have already booked his services but some sessions are “open” to those who want to attend.

8am till 9:30am Under 12 boys Titans
10am till 11:15am Under 14 boys Spartans
11:30am till 12:30pm Under 12 & under 14 girls Open

3pm till 3:30pm Session on “Going to USA”
3:30pm till 4:30m Special Women’s program

This will be the only times Jason will be available as he flies out to USA on Thursday night. You must call me on 3398 2790 by Tuesday 11am to book a place.

Dear Coach / Manager

Local company Fasta Pasta at Stones Corner has joined our supporters group and from this week will be making available to every under 12 team a “Team Player” award. Th eplayer will receive a free meal voucher at Fasta Pasta.

This is to be handed out at end of the game to the player you feel has made an effort, whether that be as a player or as team person.

Perhaps even the hardest trainer that week. We would ask that the award gets shared around so young players recognise ongoing efforts can be rewarded.

This at this stage it is a trial basis and we encourage feed back from the teams and parents.

Each week the vouchers will be at the canteen and we ask that you make sure that you pick your teams up when collecting or placing names on the score sheet.

Local store manager Mr Ben Ansel offered "At Fasta Pasta Stones Corner, we are committed to giving our customers the best dinning experience, with high quality meals, and friendly service. We have been serving great pasta in the southside area for 8 years now and thrive on keeping our customers happy!

We are also commited to be part of the community, this is why we are involved with the Spartans; to give back what our customers and friends have given us over the years.

We are looking forward to a long and profitable relationship between the Spartans and Fasta Pasta Stones Corner!

Junior Spartans three-peat

In a come from behind finish the Southern Districts Basketball Association juniors have won South Queensland’s most prestigious junior award the “Harold Peacock Shield” for a record third year straight.

After entering the very last day of competition the junior Spartans were placed third in overall ranking conducted by Basketball Queensland. Strong wins in the under 12 and 16 girls and under 16 boys saw them leap frog both Maroochydore and Logan who were favourites to win in 2010.

“This is testament to the program we now have on offer for every age group” offered Spartans President, Charles Ellis. “We work so hard in the off season to make sure every player at Carina has a pathway, if they want it to highest level’.

The Spartans not resting on the record breaking three-peat, prior to the wins on Saturday, had already released three new programs aimed at ensuring the junior program will continue to grow and develop.

Allan Ladewig, General Manager stated “We have recruited the best coaching staff possible with Peter Pendle the former Brisbane Bullet Assistant coach heading up our “Underpinning Program”, the “Little Bounders” and the very popular “Shooters Program”. “This with some of the best junior coaching staff in Queensland with Larry O’Bree, Ray Axam, Bec Dudic, Bec Stephens, Mathew Beggs and Penny Bairstow working so hard in the domestic and representative programs ensures our players are sound in fundamentals while still having fun”.

“To ensure that players also have a pathway after juniors the Association has elected to send a junior men’s team to the USA in December where we are pretty confident that at least 4 players will get a chance at a college in 2011. We will also be attending Port Macquarie in January 2011 for the Pacific Slam, which we won in 2010 in under 17 boys with a very young team”.

The Spartans have also announced that they have USA “Super coach”, Jason Wright, returning in April to work with players. “Jason is the best USA coach I have ever worked with and he brings so much to our club’ Ladewig added.

Parents wanting to get their children involved should contact the Association, which is based at the Clem Jones Youth Centre in Carina, prior to Easter as the new junior season and all development programs start immediately after the school holidays.

2011 Junior Coaching
20-07-10, 14:16
NEW JUNIOR COACHING APPOINTMEMTS

The Southern Districts Basketball Association today announced the 2011 coaching appointments with some new faces joining the program.

After winning the “Harold Peacock Shield” for the third year in a row in 2010 the Spartans are keen to move to an even higher level. The shield is awarded to the best and most successful junior program in south east Queensland.

“This year the process in selection was the hardest it has ever been with the likes of Nikki Bairstow, former assistant coach at Australian Institute Sport, joining our junior coaching staff along with former Brisbane Bullet legend Leroy Loggins as well. This is a great chance for our under 18 boys to learn and listen from one of the greatest players ever to compete” offered Allan Ladewig, General Manager.

“We also have stalwart, Steve Lennon returning to take up the under 12 girls program after they won the State Championship this year under the direction of Ray Axam. Former Lady Spartan great Rebecca Stephens returning to coach the under 18 Titans women’s is fantastic news as she did such a great job last year.

The fact that we have been able to attract Scott Lloyd to head up our junior men’s program and have Tony Stephens to head up the under 18 junior women will go a long way to completing the pathway for our juniors as they aspire to our senior South East Australian Basketball League programs.”

While trial dates have not been set the month of August will see squads trimmed in readiness for the start of the BQJBC season in October. The dates for all trials will be place on the website www.sdspartans.basketball.net.au

The stadium will close for two week mid September for major renovations which will see all floors remarked with other stadium improvements carried out in preparation for term four.

Ladewig went on to add “The hard challenge now is to find assistants, preferably young, coaching staff who can work with this great group in preparing our Titan and Trojan teams which will be basically our bottom age players. For us it is about teaching players and also getting new coaching staff involved. It is so important to make sure the future is looking just as bright as the present. Persons interested in getting involved can email me on sdbal@bigpond.net.au or call on 3398 2790”.

To: Notice to Southern District Coaches
From: Peter Pendle
Over the past few months Greg and myself have been working on a specific shooting program. This program involves a software package called “Dartfish”, which has been specifically designed to assist sporting coaches working at the elite levels of all sports not just basketball. There are several state sporting academies using this program for player development and I am aware of a few private schools using this program for their Physical Education students.
We have completed around 80% of the shooting skill development program. Over the past few weeks I have been working with several SD athletes fine tuning the program. The time has come for us to look at larger numbers of participants and what I am offering to those coaches who wish to take up the offer is a 1 ½ hour program, which involves the following:
• Numerous skill activities focusing on shooting, passing and dribbling
• The player will be video and delay replay of between 3 – 15 seconds will occur.
• Coaches are welcome to be part of the program by observing the athlete undertaking the task and then make a comment about the activity, the player can then observe themselves on a screen doing the activity and the points the coach has just made.
• The player then returns to the task and executes the skill again.
• On completion of each task the player can obtain instant feedback on their skill activity by analyzing their own performance
• If time permits we will record 3 selected players by the coach and analysis their shooting technique, slow motion – enlargement – isolating a section within the skill
• If time permits will can also compare two players shooting style on a split screen and undertake some biomechanical observations of the task
Coaches this is a special offer to Southern Districts Representative teams and has a definite time restriction. It will be on a first in first served bases. Coaches who wish to participate in this activity will need to contact Allan at SD office by email.
Times the program will be available to SD Rep teams (Free of Charge) are:
Sunday 29th August 9.30 – 11.00
Sunday 5th September 9.30 – 11.00
Sunday 12th September 9.30 – 11.00
Tentative date only, Sunday 3rd & 10th October 8.00 -9.30 & 9.30 – 11.00 (is also a possibility at this stage)
This offer is free to SD rep teams, a normally fee for a program like this is $110 per hour, so please don’t abuse the opportunity by saying yes we will come and don’t turn up, denying the opportunity of someone else to have a chance of furthering their development.
Thank you

“All it takes is the dream and then some hard work”

Spartan from a young age! – Brayden Heslehurst

A life time dream turned into reality this week when Brayden Heslehurst was named as a player within the Arrow Caravan & Towbar Spartans squad, who will be competing in the South East Australian Basketball League, representing Queensland in Australia’s largest senior men’s competition starting early April.

Heslehurst, when interviewed, offered “From a young age, hanging around the Rowland Cowan Basketball Stadium for hours and days on end I have dreamt of being a Spartan”.

“Nothing was more exciting for me as a kid then watching the likes of Jeff Timmins as the coach and Damien Andersen, Snake Nancarrow, Grant Rillie, Scott Lloyd and Aaron Honeyman crush opposing teams at the most atmospheric arena in Queensland basketball. I was lucky enough in 1998 as a six year old to receive the honour of being one of the first ‘Little Spartan’ mascots”.

“As a ‘Little Spartan’ I was able to run out first during the pre-game introductions, make the first layup in the warm-ups and sit with the players on the bench during the game”.

“I also watched the likes of Jason Bretell, ‘Jumpin’ Joe Hurst, Matt Shanahan and NBL and former Australian Boomer Mark Dalton put on the much respected Spartans uniform and win championships. These guys were ultimately my idols and heroes. ‘Losing’ is not a word used in the Spartan family and we are a family both on and of the court”.

In 2001 the Heslehurst family moved to Adelaide before returning in 2008 where Brayden made a ‘bee line’ back to his junior club where he represented the Spartans at the under 18 State championships.

“The experience meant more to me then I realised at the time when we moved to Adelaide at the end of 2001 and played for Sturt Sabres and although I always gave my best I never stopped wishing that I had a Spartans uniform on instead” Heslehurst went on to add.

“Finally after seven years away, my family and I moved back to Brisbane and within weeks I once again had the black, red and white uniform on and was fortunate to have my childhood hero Scott Lloyd as an under 18’s coach. I am now extremely happy to be a part of the senior program at what I still think is one of the best basketball environments in Australia”.

Heslehurst joins, what many consider to be a National Basketball League standard team, with former Australian player Greg Vanderjagt and Australian SEABL captain, Ash Cannan leading the way. Rumour has it that the Spartans will also be adding an Australian Boomer to the team prior to the season start in two weeks.

Former NBL star Cortez Groves also has elected to join the program under the direction of Queensland Coach of the Year, Leonard King, as he commences his three year plan to win a National Championship.

The Spartans are based at the Clem Jones Youth centre in Carina and cater for all age groups from six year olds through to masters who compete every Monday night.

The Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans also compete out of the Rowland Cowan stadium and will be looking to improve on a third place finish in 2010 with recent signing Renae Camino sure to be an instant impact to the league.

The SEABL season kicks off with the Spartans and Lady Spartans on the road until May 7th when they play host to powerhouse Victorian club the Knox Raiders. General manager, Allan Ladewig, stated “We knew it would be hard being on the road for the first 4 weeks. The first round itself sees the teams playing in Canberra, Albury and Bendigo after flights and long drives. It is a challenge yes, but one we are happy to take up to ensure our players have a pathway to the NBL and WNBL. The South East Australian Basketball League is the highest standard winter competition in Australia and if you want to be the best then you have to play with the best”.

Well done Coach King
12-04-11, 15:36
Basketball Queensland announces the appointment of Leonard King to the Basketball Queensland Player and Coach Development Manager position following the recent resignation of Murry Aldred. Due to the fact that Basketball Queensland is conducting a review of its competitions and development pathways this appointment will be only until this review is completed later this year. Following the review we will have a better understanding of our long term requirements and we will be then undertaking a full and transparent recruitment process.

Leonard (Coach) King, the current Head Coach of the Men’s Spartans team that competes in the South Eastern Australian Basketball League (SEABL) is arguably one of the best emerging coaches in Queensland, having successfully guided the Mackay Meteors to 2 of their most successful season ever while claiming the QBL Coach of the year award for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. He has also been intimately involved in the development of Queensland elite junior athletes and is well placed to guide our most promising and talented players through Australia’s elite basketball pathways. A former Under 20 Queensland State Men’s team Head Coach; Leonard has been involved in Basketball Australia’s National Intensive Training Program (NITP) as a network coach for the Queensland Central and Northern regions since 2007.

Coach King has 8 years of High Performance Management and Elite Coaching experience as well as 12 years experience of managing development programs at State, Regional and National levels. A previous National High Performance Head Coach for New Zealand, King’s role involved structuring and implementing a High Performance program for New Zealand junior players. During this time his duties included identification, recruitment, selection and development of the elite junior players aged from 14 – 20 years old. Similar to the Basketball Queensland role, the New Zealand High Performance program was created to ensure that New Zealand had talented junior players coming through the development pathways, which lead through to The New Zealand Senior Men’s and Women’s National team. Coach King also implemented the All New Zealand Camp, where once a year the best junior athletes from around the country would come together for a week and be coached by the National team head coaches.

In addition, King has used his experience and knowledge in the area of coach development, having successfully delivered Basketball Queensland Coaching Courses as well as being invited to be a presenter at several coaching clinics around Australia. Coach development will be a major focus for King as he sees the mentoring of up and coming coaches as the key to the success of the Basketball Queensland programs.

We are excited to have a person of Leonard King’s caliber fitting into this role which we believe will provide a seamless transition. I trust you will welcome him to the Basketball Queensland family when Leonard commences with Basketball Queensland this Thursday 14 April 2011.

SPARTANS ANNOUNCE REPRESENTATIVE COACHES FOR 2011-12
The Southern Districts Basketball Association is pleased to announce their head coaches for each age group in 2011. With the appointments of our division one head coaches for the 2011/12 BQJBC representative seasons, the club can now move forward in the process of player trial and selection. With a record number of applications to coach division one teams at Spartans in 2011 the club is in a strong position to be successful once again in 2011/2012.
“This record number of head coach applications in 2011 shows the strength in our coaching ranks currently and the development that is being undertaken within our association” offered Spartans Junior Development Manager Greg Vanderjagt. “Following on from our success in 2010/2011 as the champion association in Queensland, the appointment of our talented team of coaches for 2012 puts us in a great position to hold that title again next season”.
After winning two division one state titles at classics in 2011 and also having both under 14 boys and girls team qualify for national titles in 2011 the young talent within the association is ready to take their game to the next level after undertaking a demanding off season development schedule with the Spartans UP’s, Step UP’s and Elite UP’s programs. The coaches selected to take this talent to the next level are those which the association believes have shown an exceptional eye for developing our young players and further enhancing their level of play in 2011/2012.
In possibly the strongest age group within the association our under 14 players will be placed once again with two of our most talented and successful coaches, Steve Lennon and Steve Edwards. Both have a proven track record in player development and team success going hand in hand. With so many exciting talents already identified within our under 14 age group it is essential to have two of our best coaches work with these players this season to prepare them to be Spartans of the future.
The Spartans have been lucky enough in 2011 to gain one of Queensland’s most talented and successful coaches in Rob Scheibner. “Scheibs” comes to the association bringing with him a wealth of knowledge that will be invaluable to all our junior players this season and into the future. After many successful years in the QBL including one state title in 2002 and numerous play-off appearances across a head coaching stint of more than 160 games with the Brisbane Capitals the Spartans could not be happier to welcome a respected coach of Rob’s knowledge and stature into our association.
Also joining the Spartans coaching ranks for the first time in 2011/2012 will be Lovie Taylor. After many years working with the Lang Park association Lovie will bring a great work ethic and truckload of enthusiasm to our under 12 girls program this season. Already with two sons playing in the Spartans SEABL program Lovie will become a part of the Spartans family for many years to come.
The Southern Districts Spartans would like to congratulate the following coaches on their selection to coach our division one Spartans teams in 2011/2012:
Under 12 Girls – Lovie Taylor
Under 12 Boys – Ray Axam
Under 14 Boys – Steve Edwards
Under 14 Girls – Steve Lennon
Under 16 Girls – Rob Scheibner
Under 18 Girls – Tony Stephens
Under 18 Boys – Greg Vanderjagt
The Spartans will be releasing the coaches of our second and third teams in the not too distant and future. With some exciting additions to the program and some young, enthusiastic coaches becoming a part of the program for 2011/2012 this season promises to be another big year at Spartans.
