did i complain I stated a fact
and runcorn blues is teh ebst club team why, becuase players are promised div 1 positions if they come play at runcorn blues, just look at the recent converts
Its the coaches right to pick who he wants for his side but question have to be answered when there are obvious omissions, if the coach has a reasonable explanation for why he left players that should be in the side out then so be it and at the momment I am just talking about players who should be in the side on ability.
if he wanted a bootom age side that he could develop then he should have told all the boys that at the start of trials, or he should have coached the second side and been a development coach for the younger players, most other associations respect the top age players not slap them in the face when they are eiether as good as the bottom age boys or better.
I have no issue with Jordan Not making the side he was always a maybe, Liam's omission however is absolutely ridiculous. And that is nothing agaisnt any of the boys that have made it I have known most of them for years and they are all great kids.
if i am just being a father and others do not agree with that then please feel free to tell me i am wrong as of course sometimes we parents are not always the ebst judges, though i have always prided myself on being very unbiased.

Maybe Liam needs to try out at an Association with a coach who recognises his ability or bust his boiler at Div 2 practice and games so Coach cant help but notice and find a role for him...just a suggestion. Oh and always remember....Michael Jorden got dropped from his High School team!

Hey Dad, I don't know you or your boys but I do feel for you and your son. Rep is a minefield of personalities and politics and always some kids get hurt and parents hate it. Try to remember that playing the game with a team of competitive but supportive team mates is the ultimate great rep season for your children. Sometimes being in the so called 2nd side can make your boy stand out even more if he plays with good grace. I'm sure BQ realises that sometimes not all the best players make the first team for different reasons and look at all competitors when making their choices-I hope so. A good attitude to the game and to their team mates should be part of the selection process. Not many kids will go on to make a professional team so like you I have learned to put things in perpective. Can you remember who made Qld sides or even Australian sides in the past few years-I certainly can't. Breathe deep, comfort your boy and I wish you the best.
All Australians - Cameron bairstow, Chrsitian Saleach, Brock Motum, Mitch Young, Corban Wroe, Jordan Paige, Mitchell McCarron, Garret Schiebner
Qld reps - too big a list to type. That said anyone that cares about their basketball or has any respect for kids that succeed in our sport would know. Especially those at their association.

well unlike others I have the guts to put my name on here If you know Liam then you know he tries his guts out and I would agree with you about whinging if i was complaining about Jordan not being there that was a fair call Liam was not a fair call and I will defend an injustice anytime if you want a debate with me bring it on tell me as i said in my post if you dont belive Liam should be there as well as at least one otehr boy.
But yes that is my opinion and you are welcome to yours just make sure its informed and back it up with a name

ur the only 1 tlking about or refering to Liam, noone has said anything about Liam except to agree with u, that being that he does deserve a decent go! u need to settle down and stop embarrassing him dad.
who's up to predict 8 teams from grading? Is it 8 teams in div 1 nxt season?

read the posts i only reply to whats said and the reason I am haveing a whinge is becuase he wasnt nore where a couple of others given a decent go when a team is selected prior to trials starting ??? is that a decent go not just for Liam but for a few others that should have been given a decent go
I have 4 kids involved in rep and have had for soem time i have never had a whinge even in past when my kids have been in second sides because they were fair selections.
Just because you would passively sitby (unamed ) and make comments that are illinformed you think I should not have the right to make my own informed comments son or not
I would happily speak up fro the other two boys too but not my job to embarrass them as you seem to think i am doing
will be my last comment to you unless you decide to grow soem balls and put a name on your comments

The hard part in all selections is that the coach has the final say and can "justify" selection however they like and you simply have to accept it. As a parent of of a boy who has also often missed out because he doesn't "trial well" but "plays well", I was told by a very successful NBL player in regard to my son," that the cream always rises to the top" and that has proved right in our case. Keep playing hard and the rewards will come!

My son was in the same prediciment last season, should of made div 1, but he didn't. At first he was heart broken as he had always worked hard. I consoled him and gave him a few choices, you can give up now and then next season you will be behind the other players, you can learn from this and turn it into a positive ( used the Michael Jordan story) work hard and show coaches what you can really do. He chose the latter after initially getting over the hurt, he worked hard and after a few games the div 1 coach said he made a mistake and asked him if he wanted to play in div 1. He politely declined and said he had made a commitment to his team mates in div 2 and didn't want to let them down. He went on to have a fantastic season and worked hard and improved his game. At the end of the season he was glad he travelled that journey, made some great mates and had some fun. Was one of those moments as a parent you can be proud of your child.
I'm sure once Liam gets over the initial hurt he will have a fantastic season, hope all goes well for him.

Wow, haven't been on the board for a few days & look what happens...
Surprise surprise, South West names a predominantly bottom aged team to Div 1 & slaps the face of some established rep players - I guess the only real surprise here is that it isn't Spartans!
Sorry Mr Plummeridge, I'm pretty sure Liam isn't the only one who's missed out 'cos there's certainly some really over-rated bottom-agers on that Div 1 list, really makes you wonder...
I wish Liam all the best & hope he makes the right decision...I'm sure there's other clubs around that would appreciate hard-working players like Liam come next year in under 20s.

The runcorn blues are the best team not because if u go there u will be picked for div 1 its because they win 90% of their games so therefore that makes them the best team in the club competition. so if i was coaching rep i would pick players from the best club team within my association.

yeah thanks everyone I know he and the other boys will knuckle down and play hard in Div 2 because thats teh sort of boys they are. And I understand the disspaointement of sport having been involved in coaching for many years and yes it is the coaches decision as to who they take I am not dissapointed he is in the second team, thats isnt and has never been the issue. But thats life onward and upward
I wish theall the South West boys and coach a great season
I have had my say I feel better now :)

3 yrs the Runcorn yr 10 team has had the same players from yr 7.... name the recruits???
same w the other YR teams, Denzel came over from Ippy, have I missed any others. If anything Runcorn has lost players moving overseas ie, Ford, Jah...so unless u have sumthing sensible to say then don't.
Be a sport and give credit where credit due...Blues are 'the best'! GO SW!!!!!

the blues start from yr8 not 7. They have 2 u18/20 teams most of whom started @ other clubs seeing as the blues only play u16 up.
They have 4 teams in total in the whole comp. They're girls team recruited the whole u18 rep team for last season and didn't even make the final of club.
The u16 boys team didn't even make the final 2 seasons ago and didn't even bother showing up for they're 3/4 placing game.

thats only because . the runcorn team had a ORGANISED game in the well known tournament called BBI. so they could not attend the association was well informed by runcorn blues.
also the blues didnt have a full team that season as george had a broken hand and kian left to play for rockets.

hey all just wanted to apologise to all concerned for my dummy spit on team selection last week, I have always belived its up to the coach as to who they select just guess i was a bit shocked and didnt deal with it as well as I should have. I am pretty forthright with my commenst but I hadnt talked to the coach first and that was a mistake on my part. I at no stage felt anyone was unworthy of their selection as I said i have known all the boys a long time and they all great kids and great basketballers. Any way my apologies FOR MY DUMMY SPIT especially to the coach, doesnt mean I agree but was happy with reasons and its his job to pick who he wants. So now lets get on with a great season its a pleasure being part of the SW association.

Noone could ever hope to compete with BBI in an arrogance and bullshit competition however predictions like yours float up every year. Apart from last year I cant remember when BBI won 18 boys. Even if it has been this century the strike rate is not exactly commensurate with the perennial self praise now is it? Maybe you'll win again this year and you can say you have a "dynasty" (lol) Gotta love the Brissos. Its what keeps people motivated to drive around SEQ for 20 odd weeks pay out heaps of dough and see the private school/BBI favourites make the state teams.
Beating Brisbane is just so sweet and losing a game is never a shame. They have so much stacked in their favour others have nothing to lose. Go the Brissos!

yes bbi will be the best side in the comp, i think we have got the message.
as for wizards, squad of 22 has not been formalised into 2 teams, we are training as a group.
we will have at best a 80% bottom age group....so it will be a good year in terms of development.

Wow, 80% bottom agers? Seems a little bit odd to me - in an U18 comp for a first team to sport that many bottom age players.
I'm all for developing players & I'm sure that every association has some bottom age players that are good enough & would benefit from playing in a first team, but I'd be interested to know what other association's percentages are.
From reading these forums it looks like Redlands has about 60% bottom agers, SW about half, BBI may have 10%, what about others?
Is this an unusual year. is there a lack of top age 18s that are good enough around the associations?

Arrogance and Bull shit competition? Mate you're doing pretty well yourself there, you got the expertice to comment I guess.
You take offence to a comment made obvioulsy by a kid and accuse all at BBI of the rot above? Mate pull your head out and have a look around, good things are starting to happen at Brisbane. Jealousy is a curse, and the tall poppy syndrome is alive and well it seems.

BBIs record at present speaks for itself
2007 - 2 All Australians in Motum & Bairstow
2008 - 2 All Australians in McCarron, Wroe & Hodgeson
2009 - 1 All Australian in Schiebner
Thats a pretty damn good achievement for one association in 3yrs. They are obviously doing something right.
sw with 11 players only 2 are top age players
6 out of 10 are bottom age in Redlands first team.
And it is the same in the seconds as well. Actually 8/10 i believe.
Must have been a gap in this age group for quality top agers?
Or is it pure development of the younguns seeing as BBI have it all sown up already? LOL.

Liam Plumridge - Did not get selected for the team at all
Smells like something fishy is going on around here.
but they have gained some too.... keenan and george come to mind

I dont understand your comment though as Dale is a very good coach with great accolades incl assist coach to the Brisbane Bullets. Personally i think its about time BQ took state as seriously as some of the other states who send highly accomplished coaches to nationals.

Sam is a liability and should be scrapped, he has far to many injuries and lives on the bench taking the place of someone who deserves it.
Argon pffft he averages 5 travels per game, mmmm real State quality.

I can see from this statement that jealousy runs through your veins. Get over yourself, your probabaly an average player but still choose to downplay top notch players that this state has. If your soo good buddy why dont i see your name in the state teams(s) ... thats right your not good enough.

1. There is nothing to say that his name isn't on the team
2. It might not even be a player
3. Scoines will be late of the bench if he does make the team
4. I doubt Sam could make state because he hasn't played for the last 2 seasons
5. Argon is another player that would come late off the bench
6. There are many other players in the competition contending the spots with only a few players already clear cut picks

It was the "feeling out" period for most of the teams, getting familiar with their teammates, figuring out who complements each other well and the like. From what I saw I'd put Brisbane vs Maroochydore/Logan final with Brisbane taking it. Goldcoast and Runaway bay also looked sharp. Brisbane looked like they weren't clicking but that will come. Plenty of individual talent

Glad to see northside boys go through to div 1, as they have all bottom age players except 1. Looks like the start of a great 2 year campaign for them. They also look to be backed up strongly by the u16 group (favourites?).
Was also good to see brisbane and northside 2nd teams put in to have a crack.

Yes they started strong, but the team lacked depth and Brisbane lethargic from the jump. Brisbane far to strong for Logan going down 28 - 5 in the 3rd Quarter. I think Brisbane won by 20. Standout for this game Brendan Carroll, Nick Chia, Ben Bergen, Mat Stybros and JK.
Maroochydore looking ok but would be lost without Seth Turner. Cameron Julie***? jacking up airballs and turnovers. Good to see big Sam having a run and Max Tauvo played Saturday but was a no show for Sundays games. Maroochy will improve as the season goes on but will have they hands full trying to beat BBI.
Goodluck to everyone that played this weekend although we will not be playing Premier league this season. But hey we tried hard but we lack bigs, and with no swap over challenge this year we'll have to settle for Southern Cup.

Don't know what you've been watching over the last 2 days to come up with that selection
Max Tauvo had 11 turnovers in 1 game and 6 missed layups. The kid has height but absolutely no coordination. Sam did little to impress and i would not select him due to being so injury prone. Seth should definitely be there and Garrett for sure. Mathews twin is not a team player. Jeremy Kelly is strong under the hoop, deserves a spot, but needs to box out more. Cameron J shot 4 - 23, his shot is not on but he's still keeps throwing them up and turned over far to much 8 in a half. I would put Nick Chia in a state squad before even thinking about including Cameron. Ben B deserves a spot and would probably include his brother for size and athletic ability. I thought Aaron E from Maroochydore played great and Jake Allen had a couple great games. Mat Stybros should also be on the list a great defensive player with a nice shot.
State selection is long way off, and I won't to watch plenty more games before finalising my list

Thats exactly correct. Just because these players have made selection for state before doesnt mean to say they deserve to be put in there again. After Nick Chia's performance aganst logan i dont even know how to could put him in a state squad especially being bottom age seriously. And the bergen twins, they didnt even perform in the logan game, one of them was dominated by the ttanned logan defender. Start looking outside the box rather than just seeing names that have been chosen for past state teams.

But man it turns to a world of pain when Cam's airballs turn to 3 point jumps on the scoreboard! Have to remember that every shot a good shooter misses is just one closer till he starts a run and with a coach who benches players for NOT taking the shot rather than the other way round you got the potential for scoring frenzies. Brisbane will make it through the semis maybe and finish with everyone else behind Maroochydore this year.

All I can read into those scores (and with limited spectating on the day) is -
Maroochy were very good defensively and did not push themselves offensively to thrash teams
or
Maroochy were in the harder side of the Draw ie. 5 out of the 6 in Pool A made it, and BBI were on the easier side of the Draw as they have easy matches vs Redlands, Northside 2 and South West.
With 5 out of the 6 teams in Pool A being PL teams, you would assume the scores would be closer.
Pool B 3 PL teams....

at the same time BBI had the 3rd/4th best in premier league teams whereas maroochy has 5th through 8th. Its worthless comparing this anyway. The only way we will know is when they play each other but I think a bet on Brisbane would be money well spent.

Mate what do you mean Maroochy was very good defensively? They allowed 3 less points than Brisbane over 5 games... That doesn't make any sense... Basically identical stats there.

i think "or" in that statement meant something in that last persons post
Looking at the margins and experiencing the loss against Maroochydore I can say without doubt that once my team (Wizards) decided to lift the intensity both offensively and defensively against Maroochydore (too test ourselves as were are a inexperienced group), then Maroochydore turned it up - hence the 29 point loss.
Up until end of the 3rd qtr, we were always between 6-14 points behind.
If we had not tried to get closer to Maroochydore in the 4th, they would have beaten us by 10-15, thats my take on our game anyway.....
One thing I seen from BBI is that they play at 100%, for 100% of the time, I watched the BBI vs NS2 game and take nothing for granted. Which is great.
So it's all over bar the shouting, can I get a definitive answer as to who made it to PL and of those who didn't who is in which pool for SC Grading?

was a fun tournament well done bq. We had our 1st practice last week so knew we would be a bit shaky. Cam Sam and max have all had a break so they are getting the rust out. The games were a good pre season hit out. We are about where we figured
Cant see us beating bris just yet but hopefully by the end if we keep all on board, stay healthy, improve our skills, get the players motivated to work on their game and get the recipe spot on we might have a shot. Expect to lose at least a couple of games along the way. Logan look tough as hell and as shown in the past we can lose to anyone, goldy and rb also strong with all teams competitive
will be my last go round so if we can help the players improve and get some of these guys to the next level we will be winners. Though anything less than a classics win would seem a let down with some of the team aiming for their 4th title Still hoping to get team to US next year if we can squeeze it in somehow. (may need a player or two to make up numbers)
For me am hoping to come out the other end in one piece slide some of these guys into the clippers for my last season and help a couple get to colleges if they wish
All posts by me this season will have my name or initials So please disregard all claims to the contrary
Best wishes to all teams and players and just remember it will all be a memory in the blink of an eye so enjoy every moment it and make it a good one

I thought brisbane looked very good on the weekend with the whole team contributing more as the games went on. Well done to the coaching staff and the players
maroochydore look like a potential sleeping giant but not at the same level as brisbane yet. A lot of unknown factors in that team will be fun to follow their progress
Logan and goldy both very good and the bay also capable of beating anyone on the day and taking the prize. Wizards are young and exciting and will get better all year as will ippy

Your comment was quite easy to understand the first time. Seems to me that some are just looking for any excuse to trot out the anti-caps line.
How anyone can possibly view "you don't get better than undefeated" as arrogant is a little beyond me.

i am not anti-caps. I respect success and the confidence that that brings to the club and team. hats off to the almighty caps. "you don't get better than undefeated". perhaps arrogant was a little bit understatated. What is better the undefeated? Winning and getting sex. Afraid your first sentence doesn't match with the rest of the rubbish that came out of your keyboard.
The op's comment was that the current team -isn't- any better than the team from last year, which was undefeated. You appear to agree with this, but seem to want to go out of your way to attribute some sort of malice to the op and take a jab at Brisbane supporters in the process.
The only group that was being "applauded" was the caps from last year. And I would hope that any team going 23-0 deserves all the applause they get. The only thing said about the team this year was that they couldn't improve on that. Far from being arrogant, that seems to be a humble nod to the the 2009 Classics winners.

Yeah ok. Bernard tarca doesn't make the cut anymore. Other players have grown around him and he has struggled to keep up. Jake allen could definitely be slotted in though. Who do you think mate? I didn't know a lot of the kids/

Your First V sounds right, a very strong selection.
Your bench is horrible Cabrera injury prone and unfit but you'd almost need him there just for the room he takes up under the hoop. Matt Strybos not state material, chokes under pressure has shown this in his last 2 GPS games. Hafuzi might make a 15 - 16 man but not in the league of other players. Cameron J when his shots are on this kid is great, but when he's off and he keeps jacking up rubbish you wonder, but i'd still have him on the bench.
Bench Players
Jake Allen
Cam J
Bergen 2 (right hander)
Cabrera
Chia
That would make a great team with depth off the bench.
M. Tauvo has height but no co-ordination and cant read the plays.

Based upon watching yesterdays trials, well most of them lol I will try and name some different guys I was fairly impressed with...
CENTRES
Bergen #1 - The best one lol. He played fairly well yesterday and is usually fairly consistent.
S. Cabrera - A solid body with a fairly good inside game, REALLY needs to work on his fitness!!!
M.Tauvo - Made the U16 State team, but this year he will really need to step up and work harder if he is any chance.
J. Kelly - Didn't train yesterday, not sure why but he is a given IMO.
GUARDS/FORWARDS
G.Sheibner - AUS Rep, he is in no matter what and deservingly so.
B. Carroll - A good size for a guard and can run the point effectively.
S.Turner - A great worker and fantastic off guard.
A.Hafuzi - Fairly solid all round player and good size.
C. Juileratt - Streaky but when he is on he is awesome.
J. Allen - Have not seen him play too much but what I have ive been impressed.
N. Chia - Will be a first choice next year, is a workhorse with a great drive.
??? - Im not sure of this other kids name, but he looked to be a great outside shooter. Fairly short but had good handles, I think he is from Brissy, or maybe M'Dore, not sure. Outside chance however.
??? - And another kid who was medium height, curly hair, I think he was from Brissy also, was fairly impressed with him as well...

not a bad selection there !!! With the exception Hafuzi and that Max kid with hair to his ass. He cant play, he has little to no improvement since his inclusion in the squad last season in which he spent most of his time on the bench in WA. You would have to include Stybros who can defend and/or Beau twin who is handy inside can dribble and has a nice shot.
Anyway just my 2 cents worth, we'll leave it to the selectors. When do they make the cuts to the squad as there must have been 60 odd kids there.

Not a bad earner for BQ. 60 kids = $3,000 for player registration for ten kids plus a training session.

Apparently the money made from Nomination fees will be put towards teams costs and make it cheaper for players to go away.
Will be fair enough if that happens, but will not be suprised if it doesn't and athletes still pay full costs.

Would also be fair enough for the 45 or so who dont make it in the team to ask for a refund. I dont think trials shouldnt be a fundraiser for BQ state teams. But it will be interesting to see bq's next budget and how the costs and funds raised for state teams add up.

I don't think they should get a refund. They know the cost before trialling, they choose to pay it. If they make the team, they get the benefit of the process by having to pay less to go away. If it seems like a waste of money because they know they wont make the team, don't trial and waste selectors time.

All im saying is the players already pay a bq rego fee, and BQJBC fee, and Classics fee etc. All these BQ funds are allocated across the sport including a good proportion to help State Teams. No where in any BQ policy does it say you have to pay an additional fee to be eligible to just trial for a State Team. So yeah i reckon there would be good grounds to ask for a refund.

I am not saying BQ charging the fee is right or wrong, but they told everyone before hand and it wasnt a 'suprise' on the day.
So if you attended then you accept the fact you have to pay the fee.

Interesting squad, I find it difficult to argue with the top 9, and I also agree that it would depend on what the coach is looking for. What I don't agree with (and got nothing to do with Garrett) is nominating a captain. Good player does not = good captain. That is not saying that Garrett should not be captain, it depends on who the group looks up too, listens too and responds too as a group. Effort on the floor at training, attitude at training, with other players etc. The captains role is an important one and an incorrect selection can have dramatic effects on the team, correct pick and the team will jell and become a much tighter unit. I state once again, I am not saying that garrett should not be captain, it should be made down the track a little after a few sessions. Good luck to all those trying out, the one absolute, you will not please all the people all the time and state selection is always a great talking point.

The one I'm not sure about 1-10 is Sam Cabrera. Does not have the attitude, fitness or co-ordination to be a state player. Yes, the boy has size, but thats about all he has at the moment. Needs to get on the treadmill, learn some manners and work on catching the ball!

I know a bit about the funding of state teams; and I can tell you all that it is strictly user pays. BQ do NOT give those kids anything at all. It is all paid for by the parents of each child. The $35 per kid goes to BQ as an admin fee. This in turn pays for the Singlets that BQ "give" to the kids. You do the maths 50 plus kids at $35 dollars, that pays for ONE set of uniforms and a fair bit left over for BQ admin.
As far as charging all the kids, I think it is wrong and originally the $35 was in there to be paid by the "squad" members after they were selected, now it is just a cash grab. I also think if my kid gets cut after one session I would be asking for a refund as well. I have no problems with every kid who trials paying a fee of $10/15 per session so the team manager can get a kitty statred. This money is used to pay for court hire, ice, and other incidentals that these volunteers should not be expected to pay for out of their own pockets.
Good luck to all who trial and eventually are selcted to represent Queensland South.

Yes, I agree that the $15 fee court hire for all that attended is fair but the $35 should have only been payable by the boys who actually got selected. Come on you lot very greedy!

I think you should check BQ's latest budget etc from last year. You will find that they claim to allocate a fair amount of funds raised for State teams (from rego fees etc), what exactly this pays for im not sure?

I think you should check BQ's latest budget etc from last year. You will find that they claim to allocate a fair amount of funds raised for State teams (from rego fees etc), what exactly this pays for im not sure?
I'm not sure either but would guess part of it goes to flights and accomodation for 10 Head Coaches, 10 Assistant Coaches & 10 Managers, plus their clothing, food etc.... I think 10 Refs also need to be funded, one for each team. BA probably charge a fee per team to cover costs of Running Nationals as well. I don't know how much is allocated in the budget, but these costs would add up to a bit.

The one I'm not sure about 1-10 is Sam Cabrera. Does not have the attitude, fitness or co-ordination to be a state player. Yes, the boy has size, but thats about all he has at the moment. Needs to get on the treadmill, learn some manners and work on catching the ball!
I hear Sam Cabrera can be a powerful weapon to have coming off the bench. He may not be the fittest person around but if he is only coming off the bench, he should be fine.
i mean he has more going for him then D. Jones

In my order of preference:
1. Garrett Scheibner (SG) - Starter (Captain)
2. Seth Turner (SG/SF) - Starter (Vice Captain)
3. Jeremy Kelly (C) - Starter
4. Brendan Carroll (PG) - Starter
5. Ben Bergen (PF) - Starter
6. Jake Allen (SG/SF) - 6th Man
7. Agon Hafuzi (SG/SF) - Role Player
8. Cameron Juileratt (SG) - Role Player
9. Sam Cabrera (C) - Role Player
10. Beau Bergen (PF) - Shadow/Role Player
11. Nick Chia (PG/SG) - Shadow/Role Player
12. Brandon Holloway (PG) - Shadow/Role Player
13. Bernard Tarca (PF) - Shadow/Role Player
14 - Doug Jones (SF) - Outside Chance
15 - Matt Stybos (SF) - Outside Chance
That would be my final squad of 15, then 5 more cuts. With only one of those role players/shadow making the cut and the other 3 becoming shadows.
saw argon at trials the other day. he didn't do much?

Doug like a few others is good enough (or close to good enough)to play state It will depend on how much work he puts in and how much he improves whether he fits that team and then what coaches are looking for
Max is in the same boat It is not how they are playing now its how well they play as the season goes on
There are always a number of players who could be selected to do a job It just depends on the selection panel for that team that year
There are no guarantees but the best way to improve your chances are to work on your game
Best of luck to all triallists and all teams this weekend it will be interesting to see who steps up this year

The Praise for Doug and the acyual useful tip came from his coach Warwick, hardly Doug talking himself up, just a good coach not letting his players get bagged out. Now it's up to them to go out and get it done on the floor. I think Maroochydore will take care of Spartans this weekend and be one of the top teams this year. Sam, Doug and Cam all too strong for Spartans

My bad on forgetting to type in Seth's name. He definetely rates. There are other good players on Maroochy too, just as Districts has a few good players too, but I think Maroochy will come out on top easily. Don't know how that makes me obvious about anything other than a prediction.

No one knows when any other games are being played after round 2. BQ have not released the entire draw yet, I mean they have only had almost 4 weeks since PL teams were decided, these things can not be rushed.
I agree that MDore are the team to beat in this age group. They have won Classics every top age year and with nearly half the state team and the best coach in the comp they should be outright favorites. Brisbane a clear second and then it is any ones battle for third. IMO

Whats a top age year? M'dore won 18's in 2006 with Warwick and 2008 with Gordon and also won 16's in 2008 with Colby. Does that make 2010 a top age year?

If you were living in the past then what you said is true. But with lots of player movement and large improvements in many players games, I'd say Brisbane is undoubtedly the team to beat this year. I don't want to say anymore over the internet because it counts for absolutely nothing but when the game Maroochydore vs Brisbane comes around I'll be tipping Brisbane by 15-20.

I would tip Brisbane this season. I think that they will be very difficult to stop on offense as scoring is spread evenly from players 1 through 10. You can't really afford to single out one player as all are capable of scoring in bundles. From what I've seen of Maroochy its the Seth Turner show. Doug and Cam get most of their points off fast breaks and wide open jumpers. A bit of input from Sam and thats about it. Both teams have a lot of potential however but I'm saying Brisbane too strong and too fit for Seth. Ooops, I mean Maroochydore.

I'd say 19 points from Sam was a bit more than a "bit of input". Wait until he gets 100% fit!

Hmm...sit in on a Mdore practice session and see the defensive rotations work they do (none of which you will see in any game till it counts for a position) and you might reassess BBI's ability to dominate offensively. Brisbane ARE good but they will need to be very good and all good and good all game to score easily.

Garrett and Brendan in the front court, both absolutely shooting the lights out. Both can pass, rebound and defend well. Enough said, these guys will bring it all night every night without fail.
Either Matt and Jeremy inside for power inside game and rebounding or Ben and Beau for the pace/inside outside game. Whichever of the two lineups go on depends on the matchups on the floor. Jeremy has the size and has developed his shot and Matt is a great inside defender but sometimes cracks under pressure. The lefty Bergen is a fantastic offensive player can score off the shot or off the dribble inside but can be a weak on ball defender. The other one is the catch and shoot guy who racks up the blocks. All these guys are about 6' 5" and in Matt and Jeremys case have size and Ben and Beau have athleticism.
Nicky and Anthony coming off the bench are accustomed to running their own teams can score very well and are both quality defenders on the front. Then theres Toby a reliable, pressure defender and can also hit the outside shot. I don't know too much about Jon but he seems to be the last off the bench.
Seth will always bring his A game and is a tenacious defender but sometimes goes through patches where he becomes emotional and makes a few mistakes. He is a state player nonetheless and is an awesome shooter. Cam is inconsistant but on an on night his shot can sink a team. If left open he can hit the open shot but seems to get most of his points sneaking out early and scoring the layups on the break. Corey kinda got left behind somewhere along the line. The kid is a fairly reliable guard that makes the right decisions and doesnt turn it over much but is an average shooter.
Sam is lazy but the kid is HUGE. He will improve as the season goes on. At the moment his range is limited to 10 feet and he has a bit of trouble letting balls go through his hands but he is a great rebounder and inside scorer. On defence against bigs he is quite good but if forced to guard one of the faster brisbane forwards outside rather than camp out in the middle will be smelling smoke. Doug seemed to be a forward/guard hybrid that also liked to run the wings and score on the break, he didn't seem to score alot off his own shot but was quite reliable. Safe with the ball, made smart decisions and finished the easy ones. Max Tauvo, not sure how much impact he will have on the game, is an average rebounder and offensive player.
Blaine is a quality backup guard that comes off the bench and picks up the pace of the game. Also not sure if he will have a great impact on the game. Dalton, a nil factor (he'll post back to this i bet lol). Aaron is unpredictable and can surprise you on the night with a few offensive boards leading to baskets.
Sorry Maroochydore but I think Brisbane is just a bit too strong. Will be a great game to watch and I expect Maroochy to stick around for most of the first half but Brisbane to pull away down the stretch to win by 15 odd.

Dear Rob,
might as well pick the state team now eh - garret , bc , jeremy , matt , ben , beau , nick , anthony , throw in seth , sam , cameron , jake , argon and a bottom age kid.
this will save the state coach wasting his time with any trials.
hope the brisbane boys keep reading all this crap you have written about them because then it wont surprise anyone when they fall off their pedestal.
sad part is they are the most talented team in the competition and should beat all others.
really dont care who wins between either brisbane or m'dore as long as they beat townsville.
am over all the crap that has been written about brisbane and we have only played 1 game.

Its only game 1 guys, BBI are a good team as are the Maroochy team, but both are very beatable. Every team has flaws so by round 2 all teams should no the others weakness and capitalize on it.
Good luck for Game 2 to ALL teams

might as well pick the state team now eh - garret , bc , jeremy , matt , ben , beau , nick , anthony , throw in seth , sam , cameron , jake , argon and a bottom age kid.
this will save the state coach wasting his time with any trials.
hope the brisbane boys keep reading all this crap you have written about them because then it wont surprise anyone when they fall off their pedestal.
sad part is they are the most talented team in the competition and should beat all others.
really dont care who wins between either brisbane or m'dore as long as they beat townsville.
am over all the crap that has been written about brisbane and we have only played 1 game.
beware logan when we hit our straps . you read it first here.
I can assure the nameless poster who acussed me of the informative post that is was not me.
Firstly I think Maroochy are the favorites and rightly so. They have only lost 2 games in the previous 3 years that these kids have been top age, and have won every classic. they have the toughest kid in the comp, the best big (when healthy), a kid who scored 29 points for Qld in a National championship, throw in big Max, Correy, D.Jones, Adam and all and they are stacked. Plus the fact that Wazza has won a few Classics and is probably the best coach with talent in the age group. They are the favorites.
Brisbane would be next, and I hope they do win, but they have a lot of question marks surronunding their side.
I am used to being bagged out on this forum, and I can accept that. I get a bit narky when my family get dragged into the equation, thankfuly no one has done that for awhile. I found that post that I was accused of writing quite informative and saw nothing wrong with it at all, just i had nothing to do with it.

Agreed. Brisbane coming in as "underdogs". The game will be a great show but I'm a Brisbane fan so that's who I'll be tipping. When will we get a draw so we know when they play in PL?

How did all the games go this round?
Brisbane beat Gold Coast 112-84. GC hung around the first quarter as Brisbane seemed to come out flat. Following first quarter Brisbane was in control for the rest of the game. Honorable mention to Jake Allen, played a great game for GC, alongside their curly haired big. For Brisbane it was all Brendan Carroll, Garrett Scheibner and Beau Bergen. Nicky Chia also played very well off the bench. Dishonorable mention to the GC coach, got ejected in the second quarter. Was rowdy from the tip, obviously its ok to be passionate and contest calls but yelling your throat out at every call for the first quarter doesn't help your case. Overall well played by both teams. Expect GC to end up close to the top of the ladder with Maroochydore and Logan.

maroochy up by a fair bit after the wiz started strongly for a 10 point lead in the 1st
the wiz played well in the 1st half but struggled when their bench were on. score not a good indication of the wiz they showed some good stuff and certainly their starters are more than competitive with lots of scope for improvement

Can somebody from Brisbane tell us the story about Matt Strybos? He seems to start most games but seems to be a 8/9/10 man on the team. Have I just seen him on "bad" days or is this how it is? The caps always seem to start out sluggish with only a few of the starting 5 playing with intensity.

Have to agree with you there. I find it strange that they don't start with one of the bergens, probably the left handed one. Matt S does have a good defensive game but certainly lacks the intensity of the faster bigs. Must be one of the coaches strategies I guess.
Brisbane definitely slow of the blocks in last night game Garrett, Brendan, Beau and Ben all had a great game. Anthony K had quite a few turnovers and Toby was not playing his usual game.
Dylan Kay and Jake Allen had an excellent game for the opposition.

I haven't seen any games, but is Matt a more versatile player than the others who may get some more court time but don't start? If that's the case then maybe the coach is making use of that to allow him to set a team balance after the opposition has shown its hand?

i guess Matt is more versatile, and he also plays out of position alot as he has to play a 4/5 man were he is actually a 2/3/ maybe 4 man, although he is big he has a nice shot and can defend perimeter players, he just needs to work on his speed and fitness.

He is a 4/5 man though?? He doesn't have any game whatsoever off the dribble. Can hit the open midrange true but definitely best suited under the basket. I don't think he is more versatile than the others at all. The bergens are quicker with the same size but not the bulk for inside play which is what they lack though they are improving. I think he is mainly in there to clean up the boards

I think Brisbanes performance against GC is better than Mdore v wiz
Mdore were at home and the wiz are not as strong as GC
Brisbane were away and the score suggests they were dominant nagainst a stronger opponent on the road
Both teams looking dominant but brisbane still get my vote
I hear they play in 2 weeks it should be a great game no matter who wins

Brisbane were at home. And its worthless comparing this sort of thing. Teams have different strengths and may not score or defend as well against certain opponents. Will be a good game to watch between Brisbane and Maroochydore but I think Brisbane just has too many weapons but that said they need to improve defensively if they are to dispose of this years strong Maroochydore team.

Agreed. The Bergens seemed to shoot the ball better outside and off the dribble. Strybos is more like the stabilising factor. Having him on the floor generally guarantees that though his ability to create for himself or his teammates off the dribble is limited.

keep clawing at the sport and those that do well...
though we don't need to here is qualifications of referees there on the day>>>>
ref coordinator is level 2a ) experienced and qualified educator/ref
2 refs from Ipswich = level 3
1 ref from SD= level 3
1 ref from Logan=level 3
this was calibre at rep day at Logan. Don't hate the game or the ppl trying to keep it alive!

Crap on. You aren't going out there to lose, you're going out to win, in both regular season and classics. This sort of comment is used as a fallback for when/if you lose, go out on the court and leave everything you have to say out there.

It is well worth a mention Because the refs do an extremely difficult and too often thankless job and in my opinion in Qld at premiere league classics and qbl levels the standard of officiating is very good most of the time and often exceptionally good. I have played coached and spectated all over the world so I know how lucky we are. I find the longer I am in the game the more respect I have for the refs and their development program and the less patience I have for one eyed critics
Thanks people keep it up

Hahahahaha! History might show who is crapping on and who isnt. Maybe they DO go out to lose, and maybe they go out NOT to 'lose' but just play within what they are prepared to show opposition when the game doesnt mean anything? You'll never quite know will you??!
Maroochydore have a history of playing for medals and the after party of a successful State Classics than the weekly bragging rights on Bendoes.

It'll be interesting to see if you're right though I doubt it. Losing, even if throwing the game, gives you no advantage whatsoever so whats the point of doing it in the first place? You will blow the arrogance whistle at me for saying this but I think that Brisbane is just too much and will win by 15.
Can anyone tell me when the big game will be on? (BBI V Maroochi) Cause with all the talk on here it might just be the game of the century and I'd like to book tickets to come watch, you are going to sell tickets aren't you?
In my opinion, I dont know of one coach who will throw a game even if it benifited a first team of an assoc to get into finals. Do you seriously think there is match fixing in BQJBC? I and prob many others would be able to tell if it happened (if watching the game) and there would be a massive uproar, I just don't understand why you wouldn't want to finish 1st in your division at the end of the rounds, you then get to play 4th spot, damn site easier than playing 3rd.
But I am new to U18s so I guess if it goes on then I am sadly disalusioned about the BQJBC competition.

I think all the previous poster was saying is that maroochy wont reveal all their cards during the regular season. Most coaches aim to have their team peaking at the business end of the season (when it counts) so as long as they make finals they will bring something extra with them, that prehaps they didnt use during the regular season (that might be the difference in wining or loosing). Im sure bbi will do the same. And both coaches relise the regular season matches mean nothing, as long as u finish 1st or 2nd your garanteed a home semi.

That still doesn't make sense. You cant practice an offense or defense without applying it to real game situations. Just because you do it at training it doesn't mean its going to work like clockwork in a game. Teams adjust to changes. This is U18 basketball not the NBA and it gives you no benefit to hold back. And I doubt BBI will do the same. They are a team full of competitors who will go all-out every game. A regular season win over a tough opponent can get you the psychological "edge" on that team so saying that it doesn't count is rubbish.

Probably 30 mate. It'll be 4-5th game of the season and wont influence semi final placings either way I wouldnt think so dont think Mdore could care a hoot if it was 50! Some people go for broke to be the "November Premiers" in BQJBC and claim bragging rights on Bendoes every week....and them some dont give a stuff about it and simply use PL as a preparation "camp" for the State Classics Champions title.
In my experience nobody even remembers who won PL but they do remember who were State Champions. Just a thought.

Maybe when you've coached a couple of U/18 State Championship teams you can tell the folks at Maroochydore all about your applying offense sand defenses and preparation theories and psychological edges and stuff. But since you dont know what basketball ("real" I think you called it) those kids are actually playing mid week and against which mens teams they are running their stuff outside of the Premier League kids comp, it would probably be better for the Oracle to just tell someone who doesnt laugh at him. Sure you love your Brissie boys sure they SHOULD win everything and sure you know heaps about winning state championships...but just humour us hey and wait and see?

Yes a loss is a loss is a loss but only if you feel you actually 'Lost' something.
As a coach I "lost" 2 round games but won Premier League, at Classics I "lost" a round game but won the Classics Final. I didnt feel like I'd actually "lost" anything. Just that I was better prepared to win when needed. Do you get my thinking?

look the first time these teams play each other they will both be getting a feel for how the opposition plays. Whislt the ultimate goal is to win the game, coaches wont throw everything at the other team to get the win, they will keep a few tricks up their sleaves for when it counts.
Is that dumbing it down enough for you?
