I know it is early days most rep programs do not seem to have named their coaches yet and most trials seem to start this weekend, though Districts seemed to have got the jump on everybody else! Any news from those trials attendees or non attendees?
Seems you got to think going onstandings when this group was in u12s that Logan have to be the clear favourites, they have probably the best 2 players in the age group in Junior and Dennis and a 3rd player in the Qld primary schools team.
Gold Coast will be good with Luke R and bunch of good guards, so will South West with the White boys together , Northside could be okay as the core group played together as bottom agers in div 1 last year . Spartans could be okay with Rottlier and Hay after that it will be intersting to see.
Coaches have been announced for the following:
Ipswich - Shane Coupland
Northside - Alice Michael, Vern Robateau, Jamie Anderson
Logan and GC will be tough competition as mentioned previously, have not seen Sw in a while and Northside will be considerably stronger with the addition of Darnell Robateau from Maroochydore.

Darnell back after a year in the states, that will be a big addition to a solid core at Wizards if everyone else returning. Size might be a problem but they sure will be able to run and gun it! if you can slow them down though not much in the half court!
looks like dore might be a div 2 side again?
Guards only

Spartans are all small. No bigs at tryouts. Look for up-tempo game with no real structure due to up court game they will need to play. Tough season ahead but it is all about learning.

Its true, Met East won and got 4 in, Pennisula runners up and got 2 in, Northern finished 3rd and did not get any in, Met North 4th and got 1 and south coast who finised outside the top 4 got 3 in, go figure. You would think the best teams would have the most people in the team anyway! From what I saw of the tourny I think the coaches/ selectors got it right. It is a strange system they used but this year it seemed to work.
The Future

Logan will be a class act but the size of SWM will be a huge factor as the season progresses. Townsville will be a power as always. Expect BBI and Gold Coast to be there with Wizards the big improver. Mackay, cairns and others there only to make up the numbers. Redlands under age may also be a late bloomer. Depends on who stays around from the under 12 age group.

New Thread for a New Season
Just want to see what parents thoughts about topic below. Is it something you would take your kids to on a weekly basis:
Parent:
I wish there was somewhere on a Sunday someone would start up a development program for kids to do a four hour session grade kids not by age but by their skill so they have to work themselves up to the next level. Doesn't matter what club they are from work on skills play them in teams I would pay and travel to locations for my kids to do this and I know alot of other parents who would do the same
Coach:
While I think its a great idea, and the idea is sure to been tried before. It is nearl impossible to organise. Try find the coachs to start. You would need a 'name coach' to attract the parents to it. If I put my hand up and said I would run something like this we would have about 20 kids, lol. But if Peter Pollock or Steve Edwards or the like said they would do it then maybe you would get 80.
You would never get Gov funding for a program like this as they would direct us back to BQ, good luck there.....
If you want to talk more about this send me an email. I have some ideas I'd share with you.

You guys must of had a good turn out to have 43 left over from the first cut . Wow
Two squads
25-08-09, 07:02
Districts finished trials with 2 squads of 15 for 2 teams to be picked with a third team to start playing in special program. Seems BBI and Districts working together to set up serious development in metro region. Districts ended up with 2 bigs and one is looking real good. Players told another big was coming in a few weeks. A Victorian most likley.

Have BQ finislised how premier league going to run this year yet?
Caps seem to have a number of ex districts names in there squad, what does that leave districts, hoping for a big to arrive from South?

Happy. The kids that are still here will do great. It is about them playing and developing. We will do that I promise. Some raw but athletic new comers will do well. Maybe be small but will play with our hearts and our heads. The big from south is not a certainty so we will just go with what we have. Great kids with great attitudes.

That leaves districts a fine fast squad of great boys, with talent, they may be lacking in height, but never underestimate.

Logan have the same team they had in under 12 when they won I think 2 years ago, Morris, Dennis state champions will be interesting to see if they pull it of this year now most of the team that won last year have gone up to under 16.

Can someone please let me know if their any clubs out there that have the rule if you are coaching a team for rep you are to coach a team that does not have their own kids in that age group or conflick of interest with a team your kids play in.

Got to think Dennis, Jr and Rawhai are more than enough to get the job done, not the depth of last year but they have the best 2 players in the state! Hopefully as the season progresses SW, BBI and Gold Coast can give them a decent game but no one except maybe SW can match them inside and out and in sheer athletism!

Not many associations have enough quality coaches that they can not have parents involved, sometimes it works (Peter Pollack at Logan) sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't it can get really ugly. I think most associations try and keep parents out of things at least in selections and in div 1 teams. I can see it from both sides there are a lot of high quality basketball people who you want invloved in your program do you bar them because there kid is playing?it is very hard and the associations must look carefully at the individual to see if he/she can handle it and be objective and not be biased towards their kid or too hard on their kid!

My nephew place soccer, coaches don't have a say who is in their team they have 3 or 4 judges for all divs and age groups which is a good idea then it fair to all.

A mum and Dad outfit at SD have coached most of their own children in different teams, ages and both boys and girls over the years in both PL and SC, and do a fantastic job, they have the balance within themselves to pull it off with no hard feelings from other parents, players or their own kids!!!!

Have these kids never made it in a team. Why would it hurt having someone else chosing, if they are ment to be there they will get in wether or not mummy or daddy are doing the selecting. Be fair to your kids as wll as others.

We might as well stop talking about it nothing going to change no one cares if you want to have your kids make it learn how to coach or join a commitee. Because then you won't have anything to complain about. And then you will see everything the way they do.
just wondering if anyone has any info on how teams are shaping up..and who may be serious contenders for that top spot?

1. logan
2. South west
3. brisbane
4. gold coast
5. wizards
6. Ipswich
the rest
logan have dennis and jR, best 2 players in age group, they may lose a couple of games but not the important ones.
SW with White boys etc they should be athletic and have some size, could challenge Logan
Caps have good guards with Hay, Cooke and Rotteler if there raw bigs develop they could knock off SW for 2nd place.
GC love the big kid Richardson not sure if he will have enough around him to challenge top 3.
Wizards - Darnel is a big addition but not enough to drag team into top 4.
ips - have some talent but not good enough or deep enough to be a threat away from home court refs.
the rest, runaway bay, redlands or m/dore to make PL just but not cause too many problems for top 6.
looking forward to grading comp to get a good look at teams.

Pretty good summary, apart from a few points I'd like to add:
Brisbane - strong guards and will be tough defensively, but may lack a bit of height to go all the way. Will be tough to beat
Gold Coast - Unless any players have moved to R.Bay they will be hard to beat (especially on home court) and should be top 4
Ipswich - may be much stronger than you think! Time will tell.
Logan - strong forwards, but do they have enough depth in the guard department - not sure if Junior can carry them all season.
Maroochydore - have a big who will do a lot of damage if he gets the service
Northside - New recruit is a big addition to this side and could make them very tough to beat, but will he pass the ball?
Redlands - quick and well-drilled, good chance to make P.L
Run. Bay - going on U12 form they wont make P.L. unless they have had new recruits from G.C. - U14s who made Nationals this year were all top age I think
Districts - slim chance of making P.L. (unless a couple of players arrive from Melbourne some time soon!)
South West- not a darkhorse, 2nd in U12 and with the addition of a strong(but raw) big, they coud go all the way. Can they play as a team, though?
I reckon this could be a tight, competetive season, and can't wait to see some of the match-ups. Only the toughest will survive, and we could see some awesome games!

Ask his team mates from U12's. I reckon some of them played whole quarters without touching the ball!
He has a lot of talent though, and if the NS team can gel together they will be exciting to watch and will be very competitive.

I coached against maroochy at the u12 classics and in my opinion he did whatever was required to get maroochy the win. He dropped 40-50 in that game and if he didn't the game would have been a win for us. I didn't see the players nor coach at the time having a problem with it?
I remember when the rest of the Maroochy team had the ball, we made significant runs and were winning the game.
Darnell was fortunate to be at a higher level in u12s, that is not something to be frowned upon, rather admired.
I am sure if Darnell was still at Maroochy and the group in general improved their skills then there would more scorers on the scoresheet.
I have watched several sessions and Darnell is just one of the boys in the Northside group, mainly because the group has improved and they don't require to ride on the back on 1 good player.
having also seen darnell in a few of the session so far, i agree with ALW he is just another role player as there are other highly skilled and talented players around willing to get the job done. this season will be a very competative one and cant wait to see some great games.

pretty much every bottom age kid that played in the U14 classics this year, is a step below the Blue Chip but is defined as part of the BQ pathways mantra.
The idea being it is preparing you for the next level of basketball which will be the u15 team and the end of next years Classics. (2010 Port Macquarie Team)
Also gives BQ a bit of a idea on who is who before the season starts.
Or it could be seen as another BQ money making venture , but that would be cynical.

There were 20 boys and about 30 girls (some of the players who were invited didn't attend, for one reason or another). It was purely a training camp for mostly bottom age U14 from last season so no team was selected for anything, but i am sure most will be asked to join the Blue Chip program next year.
All the kids I spoke to had a great time, and the coaching ( from Rebecca Dudic, Trevor Cook etc.) looked very beneficial when I was watching. I am sure all the kids benefited from the experience, and i hope this is a sign of things to come from BQ.

From what I saw Logan walked it, killing SW (no D White)
Wizards, GC and Caps had some good games in other pool, with Wizards winning the pool with 2 close wins, Caps bounced back and comfortably won v GC.
So I presume in are Logan, SW,BBI, Northside, GC then a big gap to rest, who else got in? Ipswich, Redlands, M/Dore??

Regarding Darnell when he played for Maroochy, he could always pass it, just nobody on the team could catch it that well! If you happened to watch some of those games it was pretty clear what was happening. Didn't see his team mates complaining when he won the game for them, typical tall poppy syndrome raising its head again!

It was real disappointing, the state of the courts on the Saturday - all players continually slipping over, I realise we have had some dust about, but the boys inability to be able to stop and pull up for shot due to slippery surface of courts was unsatisfactory. Stadium very fortunate there was not a serious injury, as Stadium did not provide a safe playing conditions for boys to play on. Hopefully all Associations will pass comment to BQ so surface can be recitified before season begins.
Regarding Darnell when he played for Maroochy, he could always pass it, just nobody on the team could catch it that well! If you happened to watch some of those games it was pretty clear what was happening. Didn't see his team mates complaining when he won the game for them, typical tall poppy syndrome raising its head again!
so was that a stab at the wizards team on the weekend or just a general comment about his days at maroochy...from what i saw this weekend there seemed to be some great game...logan are too big and too strong for most teams to matchup against. brisbane are looking good with some height and speed to work with. all in all was a great weekend...and i agree the courts were a terrible and SD were lucky no big injury occured.
"Regarding when he played for Maroochy" makes it pretty clear what they're talking about, don't ya think?

Lets change the record, he is a 12 year old kid and all he wants to do is play bball to the best of his ability, he appears very humble and team mates love having him playing with him rather than against him. He is prepred to get the hard ball and put his body on the line - would love to have a team full of players with his work ethic

I agree time to move on re Darnell.
Agree courts were terrible on Saturday.
Agree some good play going on.
I was surprised Ipswich beat SW and NS beat Brisbane, and M/Dore beat GC, think during regular season those results maybe reversed!
Also redlands might as well go back to the drawing board with 0-10 weekend, even with home court advantage on Sunday!

match ups are:
SW v Dore
GC v Ippy
BBI Gold v Logan
Wiz v BBI silver
thoughts?
game of the round has to be BBI Gold v Logan, Logan to get out quickly BBI to fight back, Logan to hold on to win by 12!
SW should get M'Dore by 30pts
Wiz to get silver by 40pts
GC v IPPY could go either way, GC can not be as bad as they showed at Grading? but I will go Ippy by 6!

1. Logan
2. BNE G
3. SW
4. Wiz
5. GC
6.Ips
7. M/Dore
8. BNE silver

1.BBI gave Logan a few problems and look to be a real contender, Logan still look the class of the group.Big and athletic!
2. Did Wiz only have 7 players? BBI silver wishing they were in Southern Cup about now!
3. GC are better than they showed at grading, though think Ipswich were without there best player?
4. Not to much from SW v M/Dore game no surprises, M'Dore looking forward to playing BBI Silver!

I hope the bottom couple of teams don't wish they were in S/C now. These kids need to be there. Because we dont have the depth of talent the teams from down south have our better kids don't get put under that much preasure - they go to nationals and maybe they don't handle it that well - even if their skills are up to that level. Some of the kids in the lesser teams do know what that sort of preasure is like, though maybe before their skills have caught up. I watch Logan and Brisbane and teams can't full court press them because they are too good individually. Imagine what sort of preasure a guard trying to get the ball up against teams like that knowing one or two of the players on his team still cant make a layup yet. Or knowing that if one of you key players (and there may only be 2-3 of them) get in any sort of foul trouble, you are looking at a major flogging. Didn't hurt as much at the grading because the games were shorter, but it sure dose now. Boys don't ever fell that you should be back in S/C. Some, maybe a lot of you will probably end up handing out lessons to the kids that are beating you now. Good luck all of you.

BBI Silver, Ipswich and M/dore will probably struggle all season, and BBI Silver probably aren't too happy with the way the first game went, but, hey they earnt their spot and I say good luck to all the teams.
Can't see Logan taking a loss until the last half of the season or perhaps the classics but BBI and NW have the skills to get the job done.

It is always a tough question are the kids better off , bottom of div 1 or top of div 2 which senerio is better for their development? I guess it depends how far worse are they or how much better than the rest would they be in div 2? but they were certainly the 8th best team at grading so deserved their spot!

Logan v Ipswich - Logan by 30 pts more if they keep the press on all game, Ips have no guards
M/Dore v Wiz - wiz by 40 welcome back Darnell! even with 7/8 players Wiz have too many players who can score the ball. Andre the giant can not stop them all!

He is a quality player and will strengthen this team. With him and Alec Godinet out last week, they still came close to Gold Coast and I think they will surprise some teams.

I do think they are better off staying and learning to deal with the preasure. I also think the better teams have a part to play in the development. I read in another message - Logan by 30 if they keep the press on. Can you tell me what Logan actually learn by pressing all game and have a 40 minute lay up drill. I go back to what I said before, they dont feel that preasure the lesser teams do week in and week out until they go away. The bottom four should almost be permitted to play zone on them and they (the top four, not just Logan) would all have to learn to score another way to win (improved outside shooting and ball movement).
Please don't think I have anythink against Logan - I could watch them all day. It is great to see a team that can do what they do. I do think that Caps and SW will give them a bit more compitition this year though.
Have a good weekend all.

I thought southern cup was for bottom ages and premier is for top ages if your top ages can't preform at a certain level then Assoc aren't doing there jobs. And if they, the top ages feel they are not good enough for premier they should't squeeze out bottom ages for southen cup who have talent, just because the top ages are taller due to age with less talent, because that defeats the purpose of development.
But then again if you do have a top ager who show great promise why let them sit out, there going to miss out and find it hard to catch up with the others if you ask me its not fair all round for kids junior development??? Sorry if this confused you.

Yes it did but then again some would say I'm not that bright anyway. It's not that the boys in P/L aren't good enough it's more about depth. There is no way a team with a majority of bottom age kids can compete in P/L. A smaller assoc like Mdore - Ippy would probably have the majority of their benches made up of bottom age kids. Sorry I font know enough about Bris silver but would imagine the would be in the same boat. So it's a bit the same as fouls during the shorter games at the grading. The better kids in these can compete a do well like they did in grading but having to either play your first 5 for 40minutes which kills the poor buggers or when you have to make subs then your team can fall away dramaticaly. I hope this doesn't come across like I'm having a sook because I'm really not. I just find that sometimes people will write a team off when there are kids playing for Mdore and Ipswich that are talented enough to play for any of the top teams but we have to work with what we have and how good is it when every now and again when everything falls into place you manage to score a result against the bigger boys. It must be getting late and I'm probably writting nonsense by now. Good luck again for tomorrow.

I don't think you can just make it that bottom agers play Southern Cup and top agers play Premier League.
Some top agers have only just taken up the sport and need developing so the lower level is better for them and some bottom agers have been playing since they were 3 and have the skills required to play higher level.

"Wiz by 25 pts - I think they had a couple of new recruits to make 9 players, must have run the bench to keep score reasonable"
It was actually reasonable for the whole game and for the most part, probably closer than the score reflects. Also remember the loosing team tend to play their benches too.
Number 7 for NW had a blinder, scored about 20ish.

only interesting games are the Logan v Wiz game, Wiz have the guards to cause Logan some problems if they can get the ball out of Jr hands (easier said than done) then again Wiz do not have the bigs to keep Dennis and co off the boards - Logan by 15 pts
Ips v M'dore at Ipswich if Alec is playing I will give the edge to hometown Ippy if not then M/dore.

So the question is can anyone beat this Logan team.... They are pretty good. It looks they are going to be tough in our region. Can anyone in the North be able to beat them. What is going on with the North teams......
logans structure in that full court press was very effective with size and speed of junior and the other gaurds in the team. i think teams down here are able to beat logan if they can beat the press and box out consistenly to keep denis away from the boards. i look forward to seeing logan match up to both brisbane and northside again. and i agree CAN WE GET SOME STATS UP PLEASE?

Logan look great, kids have matured alot quicker than others will be interesting to see them when they are top age 16, and 18's . When other kids have physically developed. I admit though it's going to be tough for anyone to beat them at this stage, maybe SW.

Wiz v SW - game of the week, should be a good one nice and close all the way through, SW have the height but still Wiz at home on those tight rings I will go Wiz by 6 pts
Ips v Caps - Ippy with no guards will struggle v Caps pressure and all star back court - Caps by 35 pts
Silver v M/dore - battle of the cellar, both sides will be looking for the win, silver have been talking themselves up on the website so this could be the week they go from moral victory to a real one? Silver in a close one by 4 pts.

should be a good game, on any given day either team capable of winning. NS used grading rules to advantage in grading (no shot clock) to win game. I think the result will hinge on PG's on both sides prviding enough ball to shooters. Good luck to both teams, hope you both are allowed to play a free flowing game. Only due to 'home court' NS by 3

Using the force I have the following predictions for this weekends game.
NW V BBI - BBI, just (less than 4 points in it). I'm a bit biased on this one as my kids on the BBI team.
GC V Silver - I'm undecided, I think the Silver boys could pull an upset but I think it's more likely to go to GC, by less than 15. No bias on this one, but I've seen Silver play at least a couple of good games.
Logan V M/Dore - No brainer. This ones going to Logan by a big margin of 30 or more.
Ipswich V SW - No brainer. This ones going to SW by about 30.

well considering the BBI 1st team only beat the second team by 14 points anything is possible. northside have a lot of guys that can score the ball and are relatively deep off the bench so should prove to be a good game.

Yes agree the Caps v Wizs should be a good game, agree don't think 1 team will dominate this match up all season they will trade wins and loses, I think Wiz by 8 due to homecourt and more importantly they have had 2 hard games the last weeks v Logan and SW and Caps had to easier games v silver and Ippy and from margins don't think they played that well in either!
GC by 15 pts over silver - Luke has to bounce back from his dispaly v Dennis the week before when he had more fouls than points - never a good look!
Logan by lots v Dore
SW over Ippy by 10, SW another team that has not really played that well recently need the White boys to step up, if they don't come out hard Ippy might surprise them!

Ipswich played strong last week with Alec playing his 1st game of season? about 5mins due to injury. Marty and the big red head kid will be there best players with the dark haired guards just bringing strength & energy. Kane needs to step up more along with Alec. Biggest team manager i ever seen!! Well coached this year though!!
Bris:
Tough guards n no real big bigs - Jordy got em doing the right things!!
M'dore:
Play at M'dore your going to lose or the refs will try their hardest to get them the win!! Andre has a tent up in each key way!!
Logan:
Peaking to early maybe? Very very good outfit from 1-8 n will b tough!! #1 team easily in U'14 boys so far for the last 7yrs since V-doggs few yrs of power at brissy
SW:
Big kid who is raw n tries to use his strength to much, verle quick, white boys just athletes and very good hand skills
GC:
Only 1 win by 1 over an under maned unfortunate Ippy team with 68 fouls called in the game!! WOW!!
NS:
Will be strong with good depth like logan across the board however mite not play as a TEAM more individuals!!

what do u mean last seven years, vdoggs teams finished in 2007. started in 2001 thats more than a few years of power. 2001 qld champions undefeated, lost 2 at nationals finished 5th.
2002 qld runners up and 9th at nationals, 2004 runners up and 17th at nationals, 2005 qld champions undefeated 7th at nationals, 2007 qld champions undefeated 8th at nationals. how does this equate to logan being the best club in the last 7 years by far would have to have been vdoggs teams at bbi.

They keep the pressure on from start to finish - good experience for our boys and I'm sure that In a few days after they have stopped shaking they will understand the possitives they need to take from the game.

Wow what a game between Redlands White and Logan in Southern went into overtime, excellent defence by Redlands but some how logan pulled through in the end after being down most of the game. Great game boys.

In the 3 minute overtime both teams on 5 team fouls Redlands White scored 3 points Logan scored 11, I think in the first quarter logan were down by 10 or 15. The last 3 minutes showed how good Logan plays under pressure. Logan made their free throws unlike Redlands when it was needed. But Redland White deffence very strong right up to the end.

[QUOTE=Unregistered;22822]Yes agree the Caps v Wizs should be a good game, agree don't think 1 team will dominate this match up all season they will trade wins and loses, I think Wiz by 8 due to homecourt and more importantly they have had 2 hard games the last weeks v Logan and SW and Caps had to easier games v silver and Ippy and from margins don't think they played that well in either!
Great call - 8 points, very close game, I will even think you were correct with the reason - game was within both teams grasp right up to the end. Well doen NS and BBI on playing a very good game of basketball

Obviously one would select Logan, but the next 3 could go anyway, NS, Brisbane have been consistant most of the season, Ipswich have gotten stronger and SW beating BBI was a shock. I would still think BBI and NS would be in the makeup but the final spot would be up for grabs

The Reffing today at the 14 boys southern cup was disgraceful. Redlands you should be proud of your refs for helping you win the game. I know their is home court advantage but that is taking the piss. Semis finals and finals should be reffed by other club refs and aduticaters as well, so this does not happen again disgraceful. Start looking up in you rule book what classes as a travel cause you have no clue. To start off with.

I wasn't at the game, I didn't have a kid playing and the result was of no consequence to me personally. I was merely making the obesrvation that it would be hard to win with a foul count like that.
So go and give yourself an uppercut. Well done to NS.

Interesting season for Districts, their only two bottom age players( Sestic and Pedwell) are their top scorers and players to watch.
It will be good to see them against top kids, year older at Classics. I think they are bit too small for this year but certainly will shine next seasons, if they keep working hard .

Although arguments can be made about how different refs at different venues interpret things, the refereeing was not the only factor, players making the fouls was a big issue as well. Tight defence and the close multi player marking NS used in particular on the Logan number 7 and other players was another big factor.
I think the NS coach did his homework and figured out how to slow down and disrupt the Logan game plan and his players executed the plan very well
Plus in a close game, teams must make their shots when they have a chance and Logan did not do as well as they have in previous games.
Bring on the Classics, it would be great to see a rematch in the final

What a crock, dont everyone assume the coach has written these ludicrous remarks, I would be surprised, There is 3 bottom agers who ALL played well. And if you havent learnt by now that Spartans isnt about scoring the most points but about learning and team play, its time to move on. Maybe they scored the most because they dont pass, ball hog and cherry pick. Are you hoping the MET East coach is reading this. Pushy Parents Break Kids.

When players get paid by their parents per basket you would hope they are the top scorers. But to continue in the sport of basketball you have to be smart and understand the whole game not just scoring.

WHAT THE HECK!!!! So they brought the ball up the court, made some decent plays and scored, probably did all the good defence too!!! Yet when you look at stats are pretty high foulers. But does that matter DAD, probably not just so long as they scored the most. Get over yourself.

Interesting feedback here...I would really be worried if this was coaching observation considering there are 3 bottom age players in this team!!! And all are pretty much all the same standard! And from my observation after only watching these boys play a handful of times, the likes of top age playing guards hold the team together with good direction to prevent dummy spitters from immature players and parents....! remember its not how many points, you score at this age its how coachable they are and how they get the ball from one end of the court to the other.

I think it will come down to the 4 teams everyone is talking about. Logan Brisbane Townsville Northside. I think it could come down to how smart the coaches coach against the other teams.
As i have seen 3 of the coaches in the South it will be interesting to see how they go under the final 4 pressure. Not sure about the Townsville coach on who that is. But could come down to the coaching how there teams run downt the stretch.

Well done to Logan Thunder on getting the State Championship. I have to say they really played well all week no one really came close to them, the stats say the closes game was 31pts that was the final and the biggest was 91pts. Credit has to go to players & coaches who put together an undefeated classics which isn’t easy to do especially in this age group. (Also to the Logan Girls doing the same thing).
Also a great job to NS & SW coming 2nd & 3rd which gets them a ticket to nationals. Unlucky to Gold Coast who miss out, they were the big improvers of the classics. (I think)

Logan played an outstanding tournament looking like a championship team the whole way through. By the time the final came around wizards were tired as they have an 8 man roster, and also suffering three injuries. logan came out strong a pressed the entire game generating turnover and layups. would have been great to see a closer game. wizards goal for the classics was to get that ticket to nationals and they managed that...well done NS.

Great job Logan in coming back from the BQJBC final to go through undefeated. Having said that, Logan was not the only div 1 club to go through the Classics without a loss.
Southern Districts won the U12 & U16 girls Classics undefeated, as did the Townsville U12 boys. Once a team gets on a roll, they are hard to stop, well done all State Champions for getting the job done.

Really poor form, attacking a child, its bad luck for any kids to be injured at anytime. A for the'far to short' remark I witnessed some amzing point guard who are a head shorter than Sam.
I hope it makes you feel really good attacking a child and not showing enough courage to put your name to it.

Mate, get over it. If he hopes to go on and be the star he parents tell you he is going to be, you better get used to reading personal stuff on here. Just look at other age groups and the attacks on there. I dont agree with it at all as it is usually parents attacking a kid, however if you are going to name names and put your kid up here as being the star of a team he will get attacked. If your claims are true you have nothing to be worried about.

Maybe if I had written " Bad luck for Brisbane that [unnamed starting-five player] had broken a finger in first game" in response to the vitriolic diatribe of a previous poster, then perhaps my point would have been better understood..
Take a starting-five player out of any team, and they may achieve a lesser result. It's not rocket science!

Some of the above responses I have just read are particularly perturbing and reflect some very sad gutless parental attitudes where young players out there enjoying the sport and working hard to improve their game are viciously attacked.
All these parents have signed codes of conduct but yet get behind a computer screen and engage in cyber bullying.
Is this playing it fair???????
Parents ,if you want to help your child get them to a skills coach and encourage to work hard and enjoy the sport.
The work that coaches like Trevor C, Steve E, Dale R, JC,Trish C, Kirron B, DOS , Brian K , Pam HS, Donna R, Greg VDJ, Shane H, Jason W do with juniors is outstanding.
This is a great game... let's teach them to be great ballers AND GREAT PEOPLE!!!!!!!!

It is a great game, but maybe when your own child that has played since 4 years of age for the same association, gets knocked out of a team for players from other associations and have had to put up with consistent vicious comments by the same boys and others, you may understand how working hard on your game and attending extra training, and then being told you are not good enough, hurts those kids too. "Sad and gutless parental attitudes" is association hopping looking for the strongest team that your child will star in, without a thought to the kids that are loyal or love the game, and code of conduct also includes screaming at your own coach dosent it?? Encourage all you like but sadly there always will be someone a bit better someone a bit taller someone a bit faster and then those kids of "sad and gutless parents" have to stand back and listen to all the hype and still encourage their own kids to enjoy the game and explain why its okay to be a star in the second team even though they should be in the first if only on the bench. In the long run how many of theses kids will make a living from basketball, toooo few, yet half the parents will tell you their child is next big star. Now go ahead and say your child wasnt good enough your just whinging. the truth is I dont have a child in this age group but have listened to all that has been said this rep season and believe parents need to stop pushing their own child forward by highlighting other kids weaknesses, and remeber they are kids trying to have fun, stay fit ,play a team sport and be better people than their parents.

boo hoo hoo. There is no excuse for your personal insults on 13 year old boys. Kids would not miss parents watching them play, in fact they would probably prefer it. If you teach them that everyone else is to blame then they will never take responsibilty for themselves. Sport is littered with hard luck stories but one theme that is repeated over and over is: The harder you work the more success comes your way.

As a parent who switched teams, you need to also consider the fact that we switch in the hope that our children will also improve their skills in an obviously better team. If your child then misses out on a team - I am sorry. Please consider that there maybe some parents out there who are impressed with the coaching and culture of a club and decides that they want to better their own childs game by joining them. So ask yourself this question - Do you send your child to basketball to win, or to participate in a great sport to their best ability. Might be time for your son to look for a different team, if he is as good as you write they will love to have him.

I send my child to participate and to come off the court saying they did the best they could no matter the score. Impressed with coaching were you, didnt get very far this year though. Ask yourself the same question why did you switch for a stronger team or better club.mmmm. I have not said he/she is great, I have said like everyone else train hard listen have fun but when the hard work dosent pay off and the replacements arent all that much better, if in one case at all. So you swapped good on you I just hope it was for the right reasons and you and your son behave accordingly to those loyal to one club. Not hold it over evryones head.

Well I think everyone has heard enough of the Brisbane parents arguing to each other. I hope you guys read this and realised that you're making Brisbane basketball a place NOT to play basketball. I'm not from Brisbane but after reading the 'BS' you guys are posting I wouldn't send my child there.

Last Saturday it was good to see more of the new future stars joining our competition. Looks like parents across Brisbane appreciate strong club games we have. That is positive sign. My hope is that our leaders will be ready for the new rep season and able to organize venues and good coaches for everyone interested. Welcome to all new players and their families.

BBI kids and clubs are great. Realy some people work so hard at this level as they do in other associations. But how well the BBI Rep system is working? Proofs in the pudding (classics). U14 gold terrible again finished 9th, U14 Silver finally had 1 win( for the whole season) U14 Bronze? Sorry all those bottom age kids who wanted to "play" basketball had to leave to play/start/star for other assosiations. Intresting who comes back to the big show next year.

!
Bit hard to play the "theyre only kids" card and nobody should be allowed to bring a bit of balance and reality to the topic when parents come on here and write up their childs (alleged) abilities, then retreat behind the "cyber bullying" cop out when someone else points out the facts.
If you dont want the heat dont put your kid in the sauna in the first place.

Maybe it wasn't the players fault that they finished so low this year. Has anyone asked about the coaching staff? The Last time BBI U14Boys went to a Nationals was when VDogg was at the helm (3 years ago) the same coach has now had that age group since then and finished 5th, 8th, and this year 9th in that time... Just saying don't pin point problems on the players.

From an outsider looking in, I see the Gold Coach, also received medals at U16 p/l grand finals for 2 different BBI teams (Gold and Bronze?), and was not seen the last day at U14 Classics due to other Basketball Committment, did he bite off too much of a committment than he could swallow for the one season?, please this is not an attack on him personally, I actually thought he coached well when my son's team played against them, just an observation

The problem arises when you lose focus on your team and try and spread yourself too thin. The best coaches have a single focus on getting the best out of the team that is chosen. It is important for the kids to believe that the coach is interested only in them and how they perform. this is not a critisism of the Brisbane Gold coach who is a great coach, but of all coaches who commit to coach a team but aren't prepared to 100% focus on the job but expect the players to be focused. Quite often these coaches have penalties for missing training etc yet don't live up to those standards. A coach doesn't play or make baskets, defend or run the court but is required to set the standard for the team. If you look and analyse the successful teams of all age groups the common denominator is a good strong committed coach and a team that is harmonius and all working towards one goal. All coaches stress the fact that there is no I in team but quite often don't follow that advice. It must be the hardest job to do as you are a volunteer who has to deal with parents, players and their own association and devote countless hours all for junior basketball. I take my hat of to them and applaud their efforts and could imagine over time it would like being in a job for them with little reward. Sometimes they just need a break because I am sure they will be still coaching at club level each week the premiership season is on.

Wow aren't you a bitter thing!! Yes the Gold team had a dissappointing result, no doubrt about that at all.
However you convientantly failed to recognise the great accomplishments of this Silver team to actually qualify for PL. Brisbane were the only association to have 2 teams in PL. These boys took some beatings and kept coming back for more. The fact that they actually choose to stay in D 1 for Classics is a testament to their determined attitude. Winning their last game of the year was a fitting result.
I suspect the author of the above to be a disgruntled parent who was not happy litle johny or Sammy was not quite good enough to make either of these teams. A development program was offered as an alternative to a bronze team, you choose to leave and play somewhere else. Thats fine, but please do not come on here and slag off on those that stayed and worked hard like the courageous Silver team.

Thanks for noticing. Actually post was to put in some balance. if you look all the way back to the previous post that was all BBI sugar and spice. the developemnt squad was a terrible thing. Terrible idea and run by the wrong person. Read one of the above post about spredding yourself too thin. I certainly ment no disrespect for the silver team or its coach. they were put in a very hard spot by the front office selectors who felt last in div 1 was better than 1st in div 2.
And you can make that arguement both ways. Was there a challenge cup in U14s? Not that it matters because they clearly would have won it. Also no disrespect for the players of the div 1 side.

Can some one statrt up another page for Brisbane - this is getting very boring. Yes last in Div 1 is still better than first in Div 2. If you take the top 3 or 4 out every one else, on there day were competitive. Another thing a coach wil tell you is that you have to be good loosers before you can be a good winner. You might find some of the silver kids turn out to be much better down the track because of this but it is hard to tell THEY ARE ONLY 12. Maybe Brisbane went into the classics with such hi expectations that as soon as things fell apart it was too late to recover. Only five or six more months before it all starts again so try and relax.

If you think that winning in a lesser comp is good for the teams development, then I hope you never coach any of my kids. How do you think the Vics are so good. It's not because of the water they drink. It's because the compitition is so strong. That's our problem. It's just the depth of our teams. Why travel to the nationals and play at a standard that you know you're at. They should be pushing themselves. Don't bag Logan or the others if they get beaten. It's their experience at that level that can help the rest of us

played both this years and last years logan boys and got smoked by both. I think this years team fills the numbers better than last years and should go better at nationals. When you consider that a Vic club like Knox has more players regestered than all of Qld, well what do you say. I hear they have over a dozen courts. My guess is this years team easy top 10.

Not sure about Knox, but I know Dandenong has 15 indoor courts at their stadium. It's simply another level down there, so many more playing at every level. But that's the Victorian teams, the Nationals will have plenty of other teams to compete against.
Does anyone know if Logan are going to the VJBL National Classics (a Victorian run & hosted 3 day national carnival) again in June? They went down last year and struggled, but I think they were better for the run when U14 National Club Championships came around.

This time last year was the time when the 'Swine Flu' epedemic had struck in Victoria and a lot of teams that had planned to go decided to pull out due to the fact they would be quarantined
when they returned to QLD.

Logan still went down & played. Not sure how strong the squad was that they took down, but they definitely went down & played in the tournament. They lost most of their games, but managed to pull off a win against the Hills Hornets in their last game.

Seems like alot of coaches and players are on the move next season kids looking for the better teams to join in hopes of a medal. I just hope clubs look after their own first again no such thing as loyalty anymore. Kids are more interested in the medal no matter how they get it.

understand what you are saying but it could not be the medal they are after, it is possibly better coaching, or better club comp, that is why BBI is attracting top kids in u14 age group. Yes there is rumor that some top players (some state players too) might be going there this year as well , but again medals in junior sport are welcome of course but do not mean much if they are not followed up with hard work.
Kids are just after better team, coach and comp not the medal, same as those few from last year were.

it is a fair comment to make, was not talking last year only but in general. Still think that two Spartan boys who moved last year made right choice, since their friends in SD did not improve much (my humble opinion), plus those two are still going strong, playing well and training hard.

you cannot compare what bbi will be like next year to the past 2 years they have a proven coach taking back the reins, and he has developed so many players who have played college basketball and played for queensland and australia also 2 currently at the ais.
im sure he will help develop all of the kids that choose to play at bbi. think he has only missed out on being in the finals at classics 3 times in 8 seasons at 14s age group.

You sure are putting a lot of faith in the v dogg while dissing the previous coach ruff ruff with the nice hair. The strength of a rep program is in direct correllation with the strength of the club competition and the only hope for BBi is to recruit players from other associations as the class coming up from the under 12's over the last 2 years has been a lot weaker than BBi have had for a long long time. V dogg is a proven coach who has had a lot of success, but to automatically transform the team overnight might prove too much. It is a shame because BBi have always had a very strong junior program that has enabled a hell of a lot of talent to move on to better things and V dogg has been one of the successful coaches.

Before you get all luvy on Vdogg. My sons 'longest' rep season was with him. If your good enough to be starting 5 you will have a great year. but don't confuse developement with winning. Sue Jarvis did many years of great work in the U12's and somehow thats been over looked. Theres no question Vdogg can coach but can he develope and win without players from outside??

Never said Sue was over looked for a coaching possition or that she had left BBI. My point was that a lot of BBI's long term success was based on the great developement work she did in U12's. Must be a touchy subject for some.
