Very surprising Hannah Beede from Brisbane not in that squad. She is one of the leagues best scorers and Brisbane's best player week in, week out. Who are the selectors?

Maybe Hannah didn't try out for State otherwise she would be in that squad for sure. She is a very good player, that team relies on her totally.

If this were true no div one team would bother turning up. Districts have been beaten 3 times this season (twice by Maroochydore) and likely 3 times after next weekend as thay seem to have the beter match ups when they play each other.
Maybe if this girl is so good she should go straight into the WNBL?
Your correct if Kalani chooses she probably will play in wnbl one day her sister is Natalie Purcell currently in the Logan Wnbl team and obvioulsy talent for basketball runs in the family.

Thats it then! Nobody could hope to win a game of basketball playing against Natalie Purcell from Logans little sister!!! Everyone will obviously snatch it and head to Byron for the Festival then...

No bagging spartans girls there mate! Like evryone else I know they are far and away the best team there and Nat Purcells little sister is the best u/16 player in australia. It'll be between Ipswich Townsville Logan and Maroochydore for 2nd place.

Is it true Manaha from Logan has pulled out again. How many times will Logan put her in a rep team for her to let them down. Hope this rumour isn't true.
Yes she has pulled out, I think that's the 2nd time, she did the same thing last year. Hopefully that's the end of it and she doesn't get picked again in Logan or anyone else's team

Best under 16 player in Australia is a big call after playing 2 premier league games?

i have coached her before - good kid - maybe other factors beyond her control - or maybe the current coaching environment she is in... maybe we should be less quick to judge until you know all the circumstances.

Why did she go to Districts if her sister plays wnbl for Logan?
Why not?? Maybe she knew some of the players before moving here. 3 of the players are Maori. It is interesting that a young girl with so much potential and talent is causing such upheaval. Is it because she's so good, or that she is playing for districts??

There has always been a big cross-over between the Logan WNBL team & the Southern Districts SEABL team, plenty of juniors from both clubs. There's never been a conflict of interests.

A player who is picked in a rep side for an association is first and foremost good enough to make it and in pretty much all age groups, beat a number of other players to the team spot.
There is no I in team and that is why most kids benefit hugely from learning to work together as a team to achieve a common goal that everyone shares in, 4 players get the ball to the 5th who actually scores after all.
To then turn around and not just once but twice leave a Rep team towards the end of a season, close to a competition that is the culmination of a season says to every other player in that team and all members of the association that I'm better than all of you, the group environment suited me for a brief time but now I'm bored and I want to go somewhere else to feel that I'm important.
Plus it tells all the other players who have a great team attitude and tried their hardest in trials to make a team that being Maori or being a "name" or having a history of past team successes matter more than actual ability and being a team payer.
To read a post that says anything to the contrary is to read a post from someone who thinks the above is OK,
don't worry about training and trying hard to achieve a common goal, none of that matters forget how you let your team and teammates down they don't matter anyway because you're a Maori/name player/have a past success/better than all of them anyway

Get over yourself Mum or Dad and leave the kid alone...your not taking into account any possible number of reasons why a kid might pull out of a team at a crucial time and the majority of them would be personal and none of your freakin' business! Go grind your jealousy axe elsewhere.
Remember some kids play ball for their own enjoyment and not to satisfy the unfulfilled ambitions of their parents who never had the ability to.

get over yourself - all that is cool if you have a nice stable home/school existence - but if you don't sometimes you have to sacrifice the things you love just to survive being a teenager - grateful for your display of compassion. Guess you also think that michael clark should have stayed in NZ instead of sorting out his personal life....

There is no doubt that Kalani is a great player. The problem here is with BQ's eligibility rules for State selection. This is a kid that played U17 National Basketball for NZ recently! There should be no way that to pull on a maroon jersey the basic requirement should be to be an Australian citizen and some continuous residency period in Queensland. Otherwise, just say to our born and bred Queensland kids - too bad, not good enough, some "Johnny come lately from NZ can wear your maroon jersey". Absolutely appalling! Where is the justice?

Thats probably what some parents of American kids who missed out on a scholarship think about our Aussie kids tearing it up over there. Glad its only a minority and kids are allowed to play. Truth is if your kid was good enough she'd be keeping the recently arrived but resident kiwi out of the team by her superior ability not by where a person might have been born. Gees the way some people carry on youd think it was some life and death thing to make an under 16 state team?! Why would anyone want to go away and get thrashed in a team knowing there was better players left out on an exclusion rule? Guess for some parents but its about bragging rights having their kid in a Qld strip and playing at Logan where the parent can get major self importance through their kid.

Its one or the other. You play for New Zealand OR Australia. Isn't part of playing for a state team the intention to hopefully make the Australian team one day. She would need international clearance from Basketball New Zealand as she played in the Under 17 team that played here last year.

Here Here! You can't have one foot placed on either side of the Tasman. You're either intending to play for Australia or New Zealand, not both. If we haven't got the talent here in Queensland then so be it, at least our girls are getting the opportunity they deserve after toiling week in and week out since the beginning of the season. Good luck to the Qld girls.

Couple of really big and somewhat incorrect assumptions here.
1) If you were an Australian resident before your 15th birthday then you are free to play basketball in and for Australia.
2) If you were not then all you have to do (and you do have to do it) is obtain a foreign player licence from Basketball Australia.
3) Making a QLD team is no ones "right" for "toiling week in and week out". (In fact its toxic to a state team when you have a kid who thinks the team is there "right"-and even worse when a parent brings that attitude as well)
At this age kids should be playing basketball because they love the game and for the social networking and lifeskills. If they are good enough (in expert opinion-not Mum and Dads) they will be identified and the pathway to the National program opened for them in stages.
If the kid is elligible and/or has obtained a licence shes free to play whether she's back in NZ the week after the Nationals or not.
Mind you if I was the coach I'd realise that this player wasnt going to make the difference whether I won the Championship or not and give a local longer term player the opportunity of Nationals experience to see where they take it. The other girl already has some international experience and can get more anytime she wants with "Unzud" if shes good enough.

What rubbish! She can do anything she likes within the rules and the rules allow her to be considered for Qld at nationals and NZ at FIBA international tournaments. Doesn't matter if anyone else likes it or not!
If you are content on making excuses to deprive players of selection in hope of paving a smoother path for your own daughter then your on the wrong band wagon. If she wants a spot she'll have to do it the old fashion way and earn it!

Great effort by the girls in the grand final. Tiana was predictably phenomenal as the Spartans quickly set the pace of the game, going into half time with an 11 point lead. They held that margin going into the 4th, when Maroochydore mounted a comeback behind Yasmin, who the Spartans bigs just weren't able to contain. So who does Larry bring in to shut her down? None other than Tiana, shortest girl on the court, but easily best defender. Spartans go on to win by 8.

Do any of the ADULTS out there posting on these last two pages realise the girls that are being bandied about so loosely on this thread, also read. This is a difficult enough age as it is, without being identified for such attention.
Team sport will always be full of issues for the parents, family/observers/coaches, let the kids remain oblivious to it for as long as they can.

I wouldn't say that Tiana was "phenonimal" last night. Nowhere near as good a game as she played the previous week against Logan.
Maroochydore guard (Jess) held to 10 points was the match up that went a long way to winning the game for Districts.
The game was very scrappy but at the end the depth of Districts was too much for Maroochydore.
Good luck to all at Classics with my top 4 prediction Townsville, Districts, Logan & Maroochydore.

Yσu've all trained hard and supported each other all season and every one of you can be attributed for winning as a team. You all did something last night to help your team mates. I like many other parents that have come from overseas not necessarily NZ only have seen coming to australia as an opportunity. My daughter played reps overseas and I was looking foward to her getting a better experience here and hopefully gaining a lot more skills for her benefit. With the comments that I have been reading online in this forum im starting to wonder whether it was a good idea. Excuse me if I sense hostility towards players coming from overseas. As far as I can see these other players can only make australia teams better. I like australia and if my daughter chooses to represent aussie good on her but if the politics get in the way she gets another choice. Some parents have way to much time on their hands complaining about what is different and unfair when maybe they should consider how they can move with the change. You only need to look at the other sports code to give you an idea of where its all headed. and dont answer me unless you can answer this question ..Whos australia is it anyway? and how obvious is it?
"Tall poppy syndrome" I think the phrase you're looking for is. Let the haters hate, they're not going to get far with those sort of attitude (and I feel sorry for their kids).

Dont think Tiana did anything "phenominal" last night. From a basketball skill viewpoint didnt see anything at all. She certainly didnt do anything to make maroochydore miss 20+ foul shots. They managed to lose a very winnable game all on their own with that. The other guard #7 is a player of the future and the catch and shoot girl who rolled off the low block screen and nailed it every time were the highlights of a scrappy cat fight played more rolling around the floor than a basketball contest.
Logan's PG unfortunately only has a right hand as 3 different teams worked out and capitalised on in the latter part of the season.
Maroochydore are just not big match hardened and suspect when the biffo starts and the refs lose control.
Classics could quite possibly be taken out by a complete dark horse team that doesnt have the weaknesses of the above three.

Im all for new talent coming into the various comps and state programs so long as they have the appropriate clearances and licences and have said so here all along. If the kid is a permanent addition to Queensland Basketball then should be welcomed with open arms. If its just a 3-4 month reconnaisance mission and is only using a state spot to take the experience back to NZ after holding a local out from the development its a matter for the coach to consider. By all means if the motivation is pure and the regulations complied with then great to have new players onboard.
Arent we making huge assumptions here but as to the players ability? Seems everyone sees her a shoe in before she's even been seen in tournament competition? Natalie Purcell plays OK but does that mean her little sister is an automatic inclusion in an u/16 state team? Just a thought.

Maybe 'phenomenal' was the wrong word, certainly wasn't as strong offensively as she was the previous week against Logan. But when all your bigs can't stop the other teams big (Yasmin) in the fourth quarter, and you see that lead slipping away, to ask your point guard to step up and take her out of the game is a huge ask. For her to be able to do it and get those stops, that's special.

there's nothing stopping any other player in the squad from moving interstate or international, why it's assumed she'll shoot through is beyond me. there's rules/clearances in place for her and any other player to pass, and to anyone that does, all the best. I'd hate to think my kid would cop this flack if we chose to move.

"Take her out" is exactly what Tiana did do. Not with defensive ability but with a full on onslaught of trips hacks tunneling and shoulder charges that an experienced referee would have unsportsmanlike fouled her out of the game.

This sounds like the person sitting next to me who complained the entire game, giving their one sided view. Playing the Ref card is a very lame excuse. The foul count was Districts 23, Maroochy 16. It's not the refs fault if you miss from the line.

lol, that is so funny! wow, so i'm a mum now, that's amazing in itself (don't remember having a sex change OR having a girl in the team), but your summary of Tiana's game beggars belief. I appreciate that you obviously have no idea how defence is played, so i won't even bother responding to that.
fortunately the state selectors were there to witness the game first hand, and can draw their own opinions accordingly. it's a good thing they don't need to get their 'scouting reports' from the recollections of people such as yourself.

In the long run it will be players like Tiana that will laugh last and loudest. She plays basketball how you need to play at the top. If we had more kids like her then we may have a lot more success then we are curently enjoying as a State.
I also watched the game. Two very different styles with one getting up on the day. No more no less. Well done to both teams and also the other teams that made it such a great season.

how about we give the state selectors final say?
if they see her as a defensive liability with her kicking/tripping/punching/wrestling/chokeholds etc, i'm sure the state selectors wouldn't risk her on their team.
if they see her as a defensive attribute, leading the way with her skills/tenacity despite her lack of size, they'll lock her into the team.
time will tell.

Maybe you could use your tough guy status to appeal to Tianas Mum to stop firing up here every 12 hours or so with utter bullshit about her "phenomenal" daughter? Wouldnt occur to Mum but theres a pretty exciting competition this year with some very talented players who DO have an upside and will go AIS and College. Long term basketball people are a bit more interested in that than your crap. Give it a rest?

Although Logan have a strong team, surely they couldn't expect to beat a full strength Districts at home with 7 players. Districts played a fast paced game which Logan handled very well for the first quarter. However, Districts were able to keep the momentum going throughout the entire game bringing their subs on at the right time to maintain the tempo. Logan were unable to handle the pressure with many of their players becoming tired with only 2 subs on the bench. What has happened to the other Logan players?
I heard Sarah Ambrose is out for 3 or more months with a knee reconstruction.

what are the points of emphasis ?
Or more importantly - why are there points of emphasis? Aren't referees paid to referee the whole game? Shouldn't they be enforcing all rules - or did somebody die and make a referee's coordinator somewhere God and therefore able to decide which rules will be enforced this week?
I enjoy watching the college game because they call the game - if they did that here, the players would be better, the game would be better and there would be less pressure on referees because nobody would be asking them to 'interpret' situations all the time.

what are the points of emphasis ?
Just the 1 page document the refs development people give out at the start of a tournament. Just the usual about "2 hands on the ball carrier is an automatic foul", "all contact on the shooter must be called a foul", blah blah blah etc etc. Not worth going into further but. Looks good on paper but game we saw today was people getting shoved out of court and smashed under the basket with no calls and the refs evaluator sitting texting on his mobile while he was "evaluating"...same old same old.

the points of emphasis are not a way of deciding what parts of the game should be reffed. they are just focus point, usually based on the previous season. i believe these points of emphasis are adapted from the NBL ones and are also used in QABL games. no one is trying to be "god" they are just making the refs aware of particular problem areas in the game.
as for the evaluator texting...thats discraceful.

Back on the subject of Tiana...saw the kid play today and definately ready to eat my words...well not the initial criticism as it was justified...more like change my tune...like Tiana has her defence.
Same intensity same sharpness same anticipation and reactionary speed same effectiveness...only today she did it all with athleticism amazing lateral movement and an absence of the hacking hands stuff that would have seen her in a world of grief at Nationals. To be that effective on D and still be relatively foul free makes a player a defensive asset to any team at any level.

Clearly it's because they weren't criticising a ref for missing a call on someone's precious daughter :eyeroll:
Yes, our daughter's are precious and we should not be apologising for feeling that and wanting them protected. If these referees or referees supervisors or even you yourself, were subjected to some of the physicality they seem to accept as a part of the game, they'd be complaining loud and long, and dare I say, running to the police to press charges.
Yes, its a contact sport, yes, its a physical game, but when somebody who doesn't understand the game (a referee) decides that continual bumping, holding and pushing 20 feet away from the ball is OK - that the player being bumped needs to 'play through it', then that shouldn't be on. That is an intentional, unsportsmanlike foul designed exclusively to gain an advantage by breaking the rules and challenges the referee to call it - clearly the referees aren't up to the challenge.
And if anybody saw the 'flagrant foul' committed by a referee who was playing in the trial between the Qld Sth 18's and an ABA team last week (a foul which on a breakaway lay-up went close to putting a kid out of the Nationals) you would know why I think referees, by and large, simply don't understand the game.

You blew it when you said Trinder will come off the bench!! Megan is the team leader and will never be coming of the bench, sheesh!!
The game Megan played at last years nationals when she replaced an injured current Aust rep Michaela Donnely in the Qld south starting lineup in the playoff with WA for fifth place. Trinder was the star and by far the best player on the court. She ensured that the South team reversed an earlier thrashing to lead the queensland team to a stunning victory. That performance alone ensures Megan her spot in the team and I would guess more than likely the captains role too!!
One other thing whoever mentioned Alex being invovlved in the state team must be living under a rock, Alex Rappa is long gone from the state team coaching staff.
So how is this starter come captain of this years state team performing in the state classics this long weekend.

Original post:Tiana is the only player from Districts that will make State.
Reply: Interesting statement. Just wondering but in what role you would utilise her and what she brings to the table over the bigger more athletic guards in the 2 spot (Heal and Page-both of whom can fill the 3 and even 4 spots if required) or how her command of tempo and organisational skills are better than Gajewski and Trinder? Maybe I've missed something in my scouting.

Spartans easily the best team in the tournament. Tiana was awesome and deserves her selection in the state team. They must have been laughing their tits off that Maroochydore was eliminated after losing 1 game. It doesn't seem right that the two best teams in the state didn't meet in the final because of the count back system.
Perhaps percentage over the whole pool is a better system when 3 teams finish on the same points.

It probably means this person's (daughter,grand-daughter,niece or whatever she is to this person) missed out on being selected, you have to realise this is just early days for these girls, they have a long way to go yet and it's nice to see some girls getting a chance to train with the best of them,my daughter's first year she was picked up as development player in top age 14-SD, bottom age 16-SD placed in Div 3 this year starting five for SD- I couldn't be prouder and she should be very proud. Agree Spartans the best team (would have liked to have a crack but!) Agree Tiana best offensive player in the State. Highest intensity/quickest defensive player in her age group also. Would play close attention at the technical meeting if I were Janelle as to the points of emphasis regarding hands on the ballcarrier etc. (Even take her to the meeting maybe?) Anycase Im absolutely sure Tiana has the ability to make whatever adjustments necessary to stay on the court which she displayed in at least one game with sharp referees over the weekend. That being said Im impressed with the little move Tiana has developed herself which takes away the ball carriers other hand on their crossover. (Only a referee who plays or coaches would pick it up) Extremely innovative and shows the kid is thinking about the game much more than her peers.
Dont agree with the 'percentage over whole pool' suggestion but. We knew what the system is coming in and its the FIBA system that basketball is played under everywhere. If the alternative were in place it would encourage coaches to play their studs flat out all game every game to increase their percentage and detract from the experience and development of the benchies. Its only U/16s and the future is whats important. Winning is nice and why they keep score but my personal motivation as a coach is to see the largest number of kids have the chance to develop over time and see who rises to the top around the time they are ready for College/ABA/WNBL. Perfect example is how players who were (apparently) superstars at Nats only a year ago are being schooled by locals only 8 months later. No complaints from Maroochydore on the system or anything about the Classics (except maybe the refereeing in the 1st game-saw those referees were quickly relegated to Div 2 after that so at least the system works)
Maroochydore girls aquitted themselves with class and dignity, played excellent basketball, improved every game and won more games over the weekend than everyone except Spartans. Definately no complaints. Have said all season the difference between us and Spartans is our lack of big match hardness and intensity and the message wasnt learnt by our gang till we got the perfect lesson. It didnt kill the girls and so its made them incredibly stronger and hungrier to achieve their true potential.
Good on Townsville for providing an exciting finale and cant say we would have done any better (would have loved the opportunity to see how we went if we could hit better than 14 from 39 free throws but! lol) Also not sure we would have got by Townsville. Good on Spartans for having the perfect tournament and making teams play them at their game. Thats what Champion teams do.

Absolutely correct. Golden rule for tournament basketball...be ready to play every minute of every game of every day. (Eliminates the "if I had only..." factor) That way if you lose you know you were beaten...not that you lost it. There's a difference.

Love you Jess xxoo
Actually not a parent of any of these girls but was at all games as a spectator and realise that the whole of state teams in all sports are not based on performance. It is all politcal. Let me know how 4 players from Spartens made the squad and they came first, one from Runaway Bay and they came fourth and got one in and Ipswich came seventh and had three players in the squad. The state teams are nothing but an absolute JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe you did miss something (how I'll never know), but hopefully the Classics have cleared it up for you. Tiana will be the first player picked, Megan will be there too.
Tiana situation definately cleared up. Best at tournament. (Should have ended your sentence there.)

at a cage fighting championship maybe
Cairns did quite well at the classics (no cage fighting - dont know what thats meant to mean about 14/15 year old girls). They surprised alot of teams and finished with 3rd place.. Good to see North Queensland teams getting some recognition- townsville and Cairns in top 4!

I was also a spectator at the classics (although did not watch every game that every one of these girls played as thats impossible). From what I saw of these girls, every girl picked in the squad showed enough across the tournament to warrent their selection!!! Sure most had a bad game here or there- but that happens to the best of us. It doesn't mean they are not good enough to be selected in the state squad!! Especially if they showed that on a whole, they are more skillful etc then other players in the mix for selection. I am sure the selectors picked each of the 15 girls with a specific purpose in mind- there is no right or wrong. It depends on what style of game they wish to play and which girls will suit this style the best!
I do not agree that it is all political and I also do not believe that you can judge the quality of a player simply by what position their team finished at the classics. Who is to say how Runaway Bay would have gone in a pool with Spartins and Townsville...?? Would they still have come 2nd in this pool, leading to a top 4 finish?? Other teams lost games by 2 or 3 points, with these narrow wins or loses being the difference between i.e. a top 4 position and finishing 6th or 7th. Other teams had 1 shocking game (i.e. maroochy's first game), being the difference between playing off for a medal and finishing 5th. Is it really fair to say a player does not deserve to be in a state team because their team didn't finish as high as others in one tournament???? Prehaps a better way to judge (if you had to base selection on team performance- which is flawed in itself) would be to look at premier league results- that is, consistent results/performance over a complete season. The top 4 teams = Maroochy (3 players), SD (4 players), Logan (3 players) & Ipswich (3 players). State team = 13/15 players from the top 4 teams. Sounds pretty spot on to me!!!
I agree Spartins definately deserved 4 players in the squad as those 4 players, regardless of where the team finished at the classics, are 4 of the best 15 players in the south. Spartins went on to the win the classics however, because they had depth in their squad!! Sure they have 4 guns, but players 5 - 8 would probably start in a lot of other teams!! Put these 4 players in a team that does not have the depth to back them up and there is a chance they do not go on to win the classics.
Yes Ipswich came 7th but got 3 players in the squad. However, Logan came 6th and got 3 players in (you could argue their other starting guard deserved a look in as well) and Maroochy came 5th and got 3 players in. Where do we draw the line at how many players a team should get in the state squad based on their results at a 5 day tournament?? Why do you not have a problem that Maroochy and Logan got 3 in??

Totally agree. Havent heard the "last name" before (but I'm not from Twmba) however having scouted this age group through the season I saw a huge upside to this player. If the feathered complainer knew enough they would see that the kid has athleticism competitiveness and plays with intensity. May be a little raw right now but in the mix with better players and being bottom age she is well worth having along for the journey and worthy of consideration in final selections. The whole squad is solid I feel and final cut will be a nightmare. Shame we cant take all 15 like the American set up and vary the ten players each game.

If raw is what wins championships I would agree with you. Just a shame that a "raw" player put other skilled "top age" bigs out of the picture. I hope by the end of this journey she comes out of this a totally allround player.

Agree with both posts. There are some great little players in that BBI side. Not sure they are ready for Nationals or could displace any of the incumbents just yet but their improvement from grading to Classics has been a huge up-curve and they will definately go on to better things after their year under Pams tutelage.

I was the excited one..firstly Taylor was a loss, the girls loved Taylor and Kristy will be staying with Spartans (firsthand info) and Tyeka well that will be sad if she leaves but so be it.. and not sure if you are aware yo nasty little person but these girls won the BQJBC without Kilani, they also wooped Ipswich's ass without Kilani(Purcell) so they were already amazing before Kilani came along - I doubt she will leave though if she does it will probably be to Logan..Go the Spartans!!

I only do fermented grapes (which are never sour) and its a potato chip in comparison to the tree trunk on your shoulder mate! If you cant take a sincere acknowledgement of the teams supremecy all season tinged with a bit of humour from, as you say, an old joke...maybe think about oiling up the chainsaw and reducing the amount of timber on YOUR shoulder.

Most players do go onto better things once they get away from Pam's or any hamilton-smith coaching ability.
Yeh been hearing that stuff for years but also been hearing for years, well seeing actually, a number of Nationals Championship medals as well as Classics medals and players going on to bigger things all under the Hamilton-Smith's coaching.
Sometimes its just impossible for people to accept that their daughters particular year was not a strong one and the team didnt do well because opposition teams WERE having a strong year and/or their daughter and her team were not as good. Easiest solution in that case is to blame the woman whose been coming up trumps in the game over 3 decades as a player coach and blame her for the kids shortcomings. Pam's used to it. It comes with the territory.

Great result. Heres hoping the qld girls can get up. The age old question, do players make the coach or the coach make the players? Over a whole season of rep the coach is instrumental in how the team performs. However in this type of representative side the coach has to mould a side of individuals in a limited time frame. It is usually the talent of the players that determine the result.

2 Australian players, magic starting 5, have to credit the players this time. Good luck girls.

Good experienced coaches like Pam HS all understand when you win anything in any comp, it is because of the players. When you lose, it's always the coaches fault. That is part of the game. Remember that Pam HS was also an Australian rep as a player, so she has enjoyed both sides.
One things for sure, if the team did not make the gold medal game the Trolls would be on here straight away baggin her relentlessly.
I say good luck to all the girls, well done! Also a shout out to Pam, Jordan, Tony and Jackie for a job well done regardless of the outcome today.

Gees you wont give Pam a miniscule of credit will you. Yep, it is always the baseline ability of the players that decides outcomes. In many if not all instances it is the ability of the coach to refine channel and manage that ability to win games that dictates the final outcome. Seen plenty of teams with a heap of talent finish nowhere. You can blame the players but its ultimately the coaches deficiencies in not selecting the right personality dynamic, not managing the egos not assigning correct roles or just not knowing the game thats the difference between mediocre and good performance. Seen a lot of teams with below average talent who over achieve due the experience and diligence of the coach in all the above areas.
This years U/16 BBI team? Perhaps only one slightly better than average player but managed to get better as the season went along but without troubling the more talented teams.
This years U/18 girls state team? 2 or 3 highly talented players, a bunch of moderate talents and a Coach who managed to combine it all to come within 1 point of a National Championship.
Cant complain too much about that.

Her performance at Classics was ordinary at best but she did look to be carrying an injury though.
Kristy Wallace very unlucky but youwill be the first picked next year so keep working hard and you will reap the rewrds eventually.
One day they select a team on performance and not reputation.

Thought they did a very good job performance based actually. Thought Tusa started the season strong but as the other girls got fitter and faster Hanna didnt seem to keep pace, obviously the injury was a major factor.
Reckon Wallace can consider herself very unlucky (no extremely unlucky!) as could Greigs and Wilkes (Maroochydore) Sanderson (Logan) one of the taller girls from Districts (name unknown)... and to an extent the shooter/finisher from BBI.(#5 or 15??)
Looking forward to seeing this group play. Dont want to put the cart before the horse but Coaches would have every reason to be excited.

It has been known for the ITC/QAS coach to pressure the coach and push for their players to at least be named as state reserves as it was part of their job performance indicators.

What? regardless of the fact you may not be good enough or outplayed by opposition as Trinder was at classics yet still named in the team. So all Qas members automatically selected for state and state reserves fn bullshit
Unregistered
22-04-10, 16:31
I was referring to the former QAS coach. Some state coaches would disregard any input from QAS coach, others would listen a little more. A the end of the day naming a player into the last reserve spot isnt really going to make a huge difference to anyone. I dont know these players but I dare say that if the player wasnt injured she would have been in the final squad anyway.
QAS players dont get automatically selected, although the obviously get considered. QAS players are often selected into that program based on potential to be an elite player in the future, it doesnt mean they are elite now.
Let's remember that a team is selected. It is not an allstar 10. Players are often selected into the last couple of positions based on a defined role. It could be as a 3 point shooter, a defender, an engergiser off the bench, it could even be an energiser on the bench, a rebounder etc. Players have been selected for state teams before even though they dont start in their rep team. some players may be really good but struggle in a structured team environment, or they may have a poor attitude, there could be the perception of them being a problem if they dont get any/many minutes etc. The nationals are a different competition to classics.
The team isnt selected from classics, the head coach has been watching this age group for sometime, watching premier league games, performances at camps and would have consulted with her assistant coaches and many other people. Selecting the best 10 to form the best team isnt an easy job.
I dont know enough about the players in this age group to comment specifically, and I dont think it it fair to single out a player who is in the team.
The team is selected and should now be fully supported by all, and cheered along at the National Championships. Good luck to all.

I think the initial point was that Sarah Ambrose (named as a state reserve) has recently had a knee reconstruction. I didn't read that as that she wasn't good enough to be selected, just a general question as to why she was named as a reserve if she cannot perform the required training / games. I admire Sarah as a player (and a lovely young lady!) but I would be asking the same question!

Is it possible that naming her was done as a confidence boost considering she is injured. Some players need constant renforcement, others don't and is it part of the reabilitation plan by QAS/State coaches backing their original QAS choices.
She won't be National ready, so can't see any other reason.

What? regardless of the fact you may not be good enough or outplayed by opposition as Trinder was at classics yet still named in the team. So all Qas members automatically selected for state and state reserves fn bullshit
Wonder what classics you were watching...not sure which players out played her but I think all the Logan girls did well with a depleted team. Jealous small minded people........have a good day

One player shouldn't make that much difference.

you have got to be kidding me. queensland basketball never ceases to amaze me with their bull sh/t selections. How in gods name could they pick emily derksen. their toowoomba team did nothing and the only player to stand out on their side was the guard who should have made the squad but did. There was at least 3/4 bigs who kill dirksen in the post that should have been selected before her. Nothing personal against emily but really the selectors must watch different games or do what basketball queensland NEVER does LOL, pick players by name. (Page) If I was the big from Runaway Bay i would be very dirty.

Should be a few dissapointed Runaway Bay players that missed out on selection. They were certainly the over achievers at classics.
Interested to hear that Sarah Ambrose is moving to Runaway next season.

Runaway Bay finally played to their potential at classics. unfortunatley their worst game of the classics happened against cairns and in the round robin which meant they had to play spartans in the corss overs. for me the best game of the tournament. bay pushed a very good spartans team all the way.
The bigs from bay were smaller but more hard working and energetic than those from logan and toowoomba who got picked.

Not sure which post your commenting on because the last one supports Derksons selection regardless of who her Mums brother might be. Just to put something in perspective but...the disgruntled person who has been complaining since day one keeps referring to their being better "bigs" than her in the comp(?!) Just consider that of the ones we call "bigs" here in local comp, at National level there is probably only Purcell, Orbell and to an extent Miller who could be considered "bigs". I mean in an ideal scenario both Purcell and Miller would be able to play 3/4 but due our lack of genuine bigs they will need to play the 4/5. Now I dont recall seeing anybody else in the comp this year and certainly nobody from Runaway Bay who would be considered a genuine "big" at National level. So the "Big(s)" you keep referring to are actually competing for the 3/4/5 spots and can you honestly say that anybody else that wasnt selected has the speed, athleticism, defensive speed and ability, shooting and finishing skills of Miller,Page,Myers or Derkson? No offence, but I dont recall seeing any forwards (except the other bottom ager from Logan perhaps) that had the ability to play the forward spots at National level.
And so thats why I reckon theyve done such a good job with this side. Apart from Tiana, Myers and Purcell anybody could probably make a case for an alternative for every other selection, but in my honest opinion, they would be wrong. (Note:Kirsty Wallace was VERY unlucky!) Ive seen a players play book and noting the style of game Janelle will play with this state team I think she has chosen exactly the right people to execute those systems. Therefore, Its probably time to let it go and start supporting the girls who will represent us and support those who didnt make it by explaining that another year, another style, another coach it might have been them and their skills that were chosen but its not a case of dropping their bundle because they didnt get it this year. Again, I scouted this group extensively this season and classics and I firmly believe the Coaches have it right.

And having a 16s Nationals here in SEQ will be a great opportunity for all players coaches and parents to see just where Qld Sth stands in relation to the National standard. Reality check for all though this team definately has exciting potential.

That would be the starting 5 one would think. Lots of perimeter scoring potential there and with Tianas ability to find the open man you wont see many teams playing zone against them.

Tiana tore it up! Outstanding, on fire. Aleisha deadly in all departments, great contributing roles by most of the team. Strong boards good transition D. Thinking they will improve as the tourny progresses too especially if they can activate some of their perimeter scoring potential to compliment the inside game. (Heal Gajewski etc) Reckon last nights performance alone justified Coaches selections. Long way to go but looking good!

If they are going to be competitive will need their bigs to be more dominant in the scoring and cut down the number of turnovers trying to force the ball inside. Need to be a bit more patient and trust the offence instead of low percentage passes into the middle of opposition defence.
Given that I think they are in with a great chance , good luck to them.

Well they didnt actually beat the sthn teams. Nobody beat Districts and Cairns lost to Maroochydore. (M'dore didnt get a chance to play T'ville) Sthn team is a solid group with a variety of talent who can play a variety of roles and styles. Hard to stop when managed correctly. Hope that the BQ bodies are walking the streets looking for 6 foot plus, 11 and 12 year old girls to develop in the near future. Just amazed at the size of the Victorians Centres , 2 monsters ( 6 foot 3 i was told) and a third as big as the Qld bigs.
Does not matter how dynamic your guards are, just cannot compete against a team that big.
Well done to all girls and coaches you all gave a great account of yourselves over the tournament.

It's a numbers game really - and don't just mean height (The tallest Vic girl was actually listed at 197cm, or 6 ' 5 "!!!)
The more people you have playing, the more likely you are to get those really tall kids. Having watched some of that game, it wasn't just about the bigs. Their whole team was highly skilled and very well drilled.

A couple of comments if I may. Firstly to the poster who described the two Victorian talls as monsters - trust me - to a young lady who is taller than average it is not a flattering comment (not sure to whom it would be regarded as flattering!). I have a tall daughter and she is neither a 'monster' nor a 'big' - another standard term which is flattering for boys to a certain but extent not in the slightest bit flattering for girls.
I was sitting in the back row and couldn't get a handle on their real height but they were certainly long and while limited, did what they did very well.
Mind you, unfortunately for the Qld Sth girls they had their worst game of the week in the final - couldn't buy a basket and everything they tried turned to mud while everything the Vics tried turned to Gold.
The height thing is funny - on the whole, it didn't seem there was much genuine height (6'2 plus) on the girls side this year (the Vic girls aside).
Over the past four years there's really only been one year with a wealth of talls
92 birthdays - not a lot of height - the recent Gems tour contained one player just 6'2.
93 - heaps of talls across a variety of States - Qld Sth - 2/3;Qld Nth - 2; NSW - 1; Victoria - 1/2; SA Country - 1; WA Metro - 1; ACT - 1; Tassie - 1.
94 - a few - maybe 5 across the States
95 - just the two from what I saw this week.
Dont know what was happening in 93 (extra steroids in the chicken) but there is a wealth of capable talls in that year. There'll be another year like that along in a little while I guess.
In terms of what the stats say - one team performed well and the other just had an awful night - it wasnt that they didnt try hard or put in its just that everything they did failed to work. I suspect they started a little tight and then when you start missing you start forcing shots or passing off and second-guessing yourself and their great strength - running the ball, was effectively taken away from them by a very well-drilled team who had scouted Tiana and Kalani very well and implemented a solid plan.
Drive and dish (when dishing is the aim of the drive as opposed to scoring) became drive and turnover (or forced shot) too often as the the Vics were prepared take their chances on the drivers finishing a tough shot.
Full marks to the Vics - they were very disciplined and executed a clear strategy to take away our strengths. AND it helps to have 6'3/6'5 behind to change shots when the penetration is successful.

That you cant keep doing the same things and expect a different result? Not sure if changing the style (and personnel occasionally) would have brought about a win....but it had worked earlier in the week and might have been worth a try?
