New Thread for a New Season
Just want to see what parents thoughts about topic below. Is it something you would take your kids to on a weekly basis:
Parent:
I wish there was somewhere on a Sunday someone would start up a development program for kids to do a four hour session grade kids not by age but by their skill so they have to work themselves up to the next level. Doesn't matter what club they are from work on skills play them in teams I would pay and travel to locations for my kids to do this and I know alot of other parents who would do the same
Coach:
While I think its a great idea, and the idea is sure to been tried before. It is nearl impossible to organise. Try find the coachs to start. You would need a 'name coach' to attract the parents to it. If I put my hand up and said I would run something like this we would have about 20 kids, lol. But if Peter Pollock or Steve Edwards or the like said they would do it then maybe you would get 80.
You would never get Gov funding for a program like this as they would direct us back to BQ, good luck there.....
If you want to talk more about this send me an email. I have some ideas I'd share with you.

looks like spartans n ipswich are the teams to beat at this early stage, it should be a good game when they clash next week. can anyone mix it with these two?

I don't think it is a two horse race, Logan and Wizards are great teams and with a lot of junior teams it takes time for them to settle into the rep season. A lot of the girls aren't used to playing 2 games on a Saturday as they are still playing club or school b ball on sat mornings. You won't really know who is the strongest until after christmas. The 4 games on 30th and 31st January will sort out the teams.

Runaway Bay should do well too, with plenty of scoring from their guards including Shane Heal's young one. If they can get their big comfortable with the ball, they could do good things by season's end.
I just think Spartans & Ipswich are setting the bar at the moment, and it's up to the other teams to step up. But like you say, it will be a lot clearer after the carnival in January.

Yes RB are a good side, it is good to see the talent in the girls improving over the years.I think the junior programs the associations are running are making the competition more even. It is good to see so many talented girls playing bball rather than netball. What is exciting is that each week there are a number of crucial games. SW, Gold Coast and Brisbane have also improved since Grading once the girls have got used to the system of playing. I predict no one will be undefeated throughout the season and the top teams will all lose at least 2 games. Ipswich have to play spartans and then RB. Spartans play Ippy and then logan. None of these games is a certainty, so it will be interesting.

the spartans held serve at home, but the game was a lot closer than the final score suggested. it was a 3-4 point game until the final 3 minutes, with the spartans fast break putting a tired ipswich unit to the sword at the death. expect ipswich to reverse the result when they play at home, their number 12 leaniva togia can play!

who will win this week and cement their top 4 position
I think Swest to beat Brisbane, the coach has started to get a great structure going and they are playing well. 5+
Spartans to beat Logan by 20+ Spartans are good
Ipswich to beat Rb by 5+ close game but Ipswich at home should win
Wizards are too good for Gold Coast should win by 30+

I can't see the Pirates winning a game yet. Yes, there offence is improving, but they need to have some stops defensively. As of yet, they haven't been able to keep any team under 60 points, unlike BBI who have shown that they can. BBI by 10+
Other than that, have to agree. Spartans, Ipswich & Northside all look the goods.

You had a good insight into the results. SW were too good for brisbane and Ipswich must have played well to beat rb by so many. This whole comp will hinge on the 4 game carnival and who doesn't tire. teams need to be deep to win and not just rely on one or 2 players. I think Spartans and Ipswich will be too good. Ipswich must have got some good talent compared to last year. the smokey is still the wizards who have not performed as well as at the grading games. They pushed Ipswich to 2 points and with a bit of luck could have won.

Firstly, well done to the Pirates on their first win, good to see them get up.
Have to agree about Northside being the smokey, their for/against is 3rd in the comp, but that early season loss to RB is going to haunt them. Still, if they make the top 4, look out.
Spartans look good. Had a fairly close game against Logan until they started to press, after which they rattled off the next 16 points to blow the game out. Can't wait to see how they fare against Ipswich at Ipswich next year.

It'll be interesting to see how the wizards go in the carnival, with 3 of their 4 games against the current top 3 teams, especially as these games will be 'unofficial' home games (as host of the carnival, none of the games count as home games for them).
Not only did they push Ipswich to a 2 point game at the gradings, they also beat Logan there. If they can get a win against either of these teams or Districts at the carnival, as well as beat the pirates, they should get a top 4 spot going into the home stretch.

well the carnival's over, and it looks like the top 4 is already sorted.
not only were northside not able to pull off the win they needed against one of the top 3 teams (including an energy sapping overtime loss to ipswich), but the seahawks managed to beat logan in a 1 point thriller.
ipswich were tested a couple of times, but were strong enough to get through the carnival unscathed. seahawks did well too, with the exception being their loss to the spartans. but with the way the spartans are playing at the moment, that's nothing to get down about.

Well it is back on this week for the under 12's. the places in the final 4 might be set but the positions aren't. If Spartans beat Ipswich( which they should easily) then the battle for 2nd and 3rd is really on. You don't want to finish 4th as you will play spartans at carina in the semis. Noone enjoys that. Looking at the draw it will all come down to the last game between seahawks and Ipswich at sea hawks. One of those two will finish in second. Logan have a good run home but can't afford any more losses. The 4 games in 2 days really tested the depth of the teams as those that didn't use their bench were found wanting on Sunday. You need to have a good balance of depth and that is why Spartans are so good. good depth, a good variety of scorers and they share the ball around. they are well coached and are on target to win the classics easily.

I'm not convinced the Spartans are a 'sure thing' against Ipswich this weekend, let alone the classics. The last time those 2 teams met (Spartan's home game), it was a 3-4 point game until the last 4 minutes. Yes the Spartans went on to win by 15 points, but the game was in the balance up until that point. If Ipswich bring their A-game, they have more than enough talent to get the win.
The other thing to consider re the classics, is last years results. The Spartans went through the BQJBC undefeated, and kept that record in tact until the gold medal game. But they came up against an equally impressive Mackay team, who went on to beat the Spartans by 4 points. You never really know how good those northern teams are until Classics, in U12 at least

If you want a definition of what U/12 basketball is about just look at results
Southwest Metro beaten in round 5 by Logan 74-12 a 62 point deficit
Southwest Metro beaten in round 11 by Logan 35-33 a 2 point deficit
Southwest maybe out of the finals but this is what the season is all about, how much a team improves from rund 1 to round 14 win lose or draw.
And for that a very big congratulations must go to the coaching team at Southwest a 60 point turnaround is a huge effort and shows whatever the coaches are doing must be working and resulting in the most important thing for this age group

I saw that result on the website, and couldn't help but feel good for the Pirates. I'm not sure how close they came to winning (hope it wasn't a heartbreaking loss), but that's a great turnaround from their last game against Logan.
The Spartans vs Ipswich game was eerily similar to their last encounter. Close game throughout, with the scores either tied or 2 point difference at every break. Stayed that way until the final 3 minutes, when once again the Spartans scored some quick fast break points off turnovers to pull away at the end. Great tense game throughout, dictated by some great defence from both sides.

Of course I dont know the reasons or circumstances, but it seems sad to me that kids at U12 would be changing teams at this stage. It also seems strange that they would be going to the top side ??? is that just coincidence?? Or are kids (more likely parents) really just looking to change to a team they think will win if thats so its SAD SAD SAD. nd is teaching the kids nothing

Don't judge people until you know all the circumstances!! Maybe the decision was not made by them, perhaps it was made FOR them by higher up??

I think you will find the kids where not changing until after the Classics but a decision was made by their current club to finish the season now and not at the end (after the classics) therefore there reason to start playing now with their new club Southern District :-)

Re read my post I clearly said i didnt know the circumstance, and only that IF it was for the reasons of winning then thats a shame. Of course they could have been left no choice but to leave, as I said maybe it was pure coincidence they went to the top team. And I would love to think it has nothing to do with winning :)

I thought that you had to nominate your top 7 players earlier in year for the Rep Comp and Classics, or do they need to play a amount of games to qualify with SD ?

As I understand it, they wanted to give Southern Districts a try next season, to be involved in the many programs being offered there outside of the rep team training (shooting program, big-man program, touring teams etc). They were upfront with their intentions to Northside, while making it clear to both Northside & Districts that they wanted to remain at Northside this season.
Northside then had a committee meeting, where it was decided to sign & date their clearances effective immediately, instead of at season's end. I'm guessing they were concerned there could be a trickle-on effect, and wanted to end their time at Northside immediately.
It's a shame it came to a head they way it did, and there is obviously an argument to be made from both sides. I just hope the kids on both teams can get on with the job & keep developing into great players without worrying about the politics. =)

Classics are different to Rep Comp. You can have a temporary transfer just to play with another team for the classics. Any one can do this especially if your team is not playing in the classics for some reason or another.

I believe the Northside girls did their best on the weekend. They have lost two of their starting five players to Spartans and also their coach is now longer with them. They do not have alot of depth to replace the players they have lost. I think it has been a hard last half a season for them.

How can you bag the northside girls. I am not a northside parent but an Ipswich Parent and every time we have played them they have been great. they are 10 years old and surely they deserve some respect. Well done to them, they have lost their coach and 2 of their starting five. they have always given us a great game and we look forward to visiting them this week and having a great game. I applaud their efforts for the season and I am sure there are a lot of teams in the southern cup who would like to trade places with them.

Again to the ipswich parent.. well said.. the northside girls give their all to every game.
To the other person I am a parent of one of those girls who were ASKED to leave northside (it wasn't their choice to do so). Spartans have been nothing but friendly and welcoming to us and just so you can get it right next time the teams only had 10 girls in each so no one has been kicked out. As for saying it was most likely us that bagged northside it wasn't, we still have many friends there and are not going to bag any club for the decisions they make and from reading the above quotes no one was bagging Northside, they were simply asking what happened to there form over the season.

Well said!!!! People need to know the facts first before they start opening their mouths.
Spartans would not have offered them a spot if they didn't think the girls had any potential. Parents need to get over it and move on. People seem to forget they are kids and they are under 12's. I think it is disgusting that people make such a big deal about this sort of thing. It is a joke.

The way I heard it the girls were not ASKED to leave northside - they produced a transfer request saying they were moving to Spartans and expected they would be able to stay at northside until the end of the season. The committee did not think this demonstrated the required commitment to their program so they made the transfers effective immediately - to me that says the girls were not ASKED to leave at all, it was entirely their choice.

People can think what they like they are entitled to. At the end of the day why does it matter to anyone else apart from the people involved. Do some people not have life.? Can't believe people worry about what two young players want to do with their basketball. Grow up!!

Well that's going to shake up the semi-final picture. RB only beat Logan by 1 point at the carnival, so if they finish on equal points, Logan have the better for/against between the 2 teams. I like your optimism, although can't say I share it. Spartans & Ipswich have been the top 2 teams all year, for any team to pull off 3 consecutive wins against them goes against everything that's happened this season to this point.
Still, if it's going to happen, it starts with a win against Ipswich this afternoon. Let's see if they can make it happen.

If their other games are anything to go by, this will go down to the wire, with the winner being decided in the last 3 minutes. These have been the best two teams all season & deserve their spots in the big one.
Districts also have their second team, the Titans, in the Southern Cup final vs Maroochydore. All the best to all teams involved, make sure to bring your A-game!

Tough game l think, however l think Spartans will come out as winners. They must have had a tough game last week against RB only winning by a few points. They are a strong well drilled team and l think they will win. But it is finals and anything can happen. I will be there too to watch.
You called it. Close game for 3 quarters, with Ipswich leading at the first break & Spartans leading at the 2nd & 3rd. Still, at 51-48 it was anyone's game. Plenty of fouls called, with 4 Force & 3 Spartans getting fouled out, but the Spartans ran away clear winners in the last 5 minutes. All girls deserved their medals.
Not sure how good Townsville are this year, it'll be interesting to see who goes through to the top with Ipswich, Runaway Bay & Townsville all in the same side of the draw.

Well played Spartans, you were clearly the better team all season and even though Ipswich pushed you on three occasions you were able to withstand the challenge and come through. Ipswich should still hold there head high as they played tough and hard and never once gave up. The classics will be v interesting because any one of Ipswich, Townsville or Runnaway Bay will finish top of pool A. If you finish second you will be playing Spartans in the crossover. it is going to be great but it will rely on the depth of the bench as it always does and in the south, Ipswich and Spartans have shown they have superior depth, this will hold them in good stead as they race to the finals.

I don't think r/bay would mind finishing 2nd in that pool, should give them another crack at districts, after almost upsetting them in the semi. They had a 1 point lead in that semi with only a couple of minutes to play, & were the only team to finish within 10 points of the spartans.

Don't right off those northern teams just yet. Townsville always seem to get a team in the top 4, up until last year anyway, when Mackay went through undefeated. Interesting times ahead for pool A. Game to watch - Townsville vs Seahawks 5:00pm Thursday.
With Cairns not coming, pool B looks a little more predictable, although Southwest did come within a couple of points of upsetting Logan a few weeks back. Logan don't play Districts until the last round of pool games, so any loss by either team leading into that game could knock them out of the medal games. Game to watch - Logan vs Southwest 9:30am Thursday.
All the best young ladies, enjoy yourselves and make it a Classics to remember!

top 4 looks set, after townsville knocked off runaway bay relatively easily. ipswich & logan in 1 semi, districts & townsville in the other.
districts have had a light run into the semis, whereas ipswich have had to fight for 3 of their wins. be interesting to see spartans go with the in-your-face townsville defence, after not really being tested in the pool games. ipswich should be ready for the logan game, with 1 eye on the gold medal game against the winner of the other semi.
by the way, how good is that gun player from gold coast, tiarna clarke? turned the bottom premier league team around to almost knock off ipswich on the 1st day! they snuck her in this time last year too, no idea why someone that good doesn't play premier league.

spartans look set to take the gold easily after their performance this afternoon. You couldn't fault any of their players against Townsville and with their pick up player from Northside I don't think anyone can stop them.
Good luck to both teams tomorrow. May the best team win.

Well done and congratulations to the spartans girls. We were beaten by a better side today and they deserved their great win as they have been dominant all season. The highlight of the day was after the game where the girls from both teams played outside together after the game and had a fantastic time talking and laughing together. We as adults sometimes get caught up in the competitiveness of sport and forget that the kids love it but really love being friends and having a good time. Both lots of parents should be proud of their daughters for the way they showed true sportsmanship this afternoon and it is something that i am sure a lot of people will never forget.

Couldn't agree more. It was obvious the Ipswich girls were sad after the game, especially since it was the last game for one of their great players, Bailey. But seeing the girls from both teams come together outside for photos etc was great to see. Seeing them continue playing together afterwards, as well as sitting together at the presentation, that was easily the highlight of my day. When they said goodbye to each other at the end of it all, you would think they were saying goodbye to old friends. Hopefully in the years to come they will be, future of this age group is looking good. Well done to both teams for a great finish to a great year.

Melanie Bateman - Sun Coast
Jameson McMullen - Met East
Kate Stainer - Met East
Sophie Johnston - South Coast
Kyla Hill - South Coast
Karina Chandra - Met East
Brierna Baldry - Met East
Adele Ladewig - Capricornia
Girls that were (in my opinion) unlucky to miss out include Angelica Cooke (Met North), Sam Ryan (Met East) and Madeleine Smith (Peninsula). Not suggesting the selectors got it wrong, just pointing out that there wasn't an obvious top 10, and the final couple of spots could have gone either way.

From what I have seen the selection process depends on how well your team finishes and thats gets you more sway in the final pick i.e win the tournamnet that gives you 4 to 5 spots second 2 or 3 third 2 and so on.
As far as bottom aged kids i think that is rare as they pretty much know they will walk on the next year.
The majority of these kids played in the Premier League or Div 1 Classics so that shows that their time always comes , just have to be patient.
Being bottom aged is all about paying your dues, being loyal and sticking with the long term programme, you are learning all the time and getting better but just dont know it.

Just returned from Toowoomba were I have been treated to some outstanding Basketball by under 12s (boys & girls). I have watched every Team my Girl (Wide Bay) was playing against plus some. Therefore i come to the conclusion that the State Team does not reflect the true Elite Players that were on offer. In my opinion there are about 4 Girls in the State Team which when i saw them play got outplayed by there opponents. Also the whole thing looked a bit shady when the State Coaches announced the State team which consistet mainly of Met East Girls whcih are also coached by M. Brown. Does he select the girls all on his own or does he answer to selectors and other coaches? Looks to me like a very Biased Decision. And just for the record. NO my Girl did not have a claim to be selected.

For the record, last year Met-East finished 4th under Chris Brown, and only had 1 player selected for state, Bridget O'Brien. That Qld team finished equal first at the nationals, splitting games against the Vics & winning everything else - once again, under Chris Brown.
The fact is that this year's Met East girls team was truly dominant over the four days. I think the closest anyone got was Met North who only lost by about 13 points (how did Angel miss out?). But everyone else, including a full strength Capricorn & South Coast couldn't compete for the full game during the round robin. I know Adele, the Capricorn big, was too sick to compete in the final (poor kid, rotten timing), but Met East had already proved themselves with a big win against them 2 days earlier.
I don't agree with all the selections either, but how do you judge players from Met East against strong players on weak teams? Perhaps a possibles vs probables game would better evaluate the individuals, putting all potential players on a more even playing field before selecting the state team.

Good observations , I would imagine as the State coach Brown and his offsider would have the last say on who gets picked and that when it gets a little bit dodgy. They do not have the opportunity to see kids play in multiple games in different situations, possibly only seeing kids play against their teams once during the week.
But having coached at these Nationals multiple times they would know what type of team they need to be competitive (i hope).
This team looks to be based on small fast gurads , Mel Bateman should be able to control the pace after a year of Div1 Premier League but they maybe lacking size when compared to the last few years teams.

Could not agree with you more. Watching junior rep basketball for many years now it seems that their is no substitute for size giving it the backbone of any defence. Thought that Angelica Cooke and also the tall girl (13) from met north would be great additions. The tall (13) was playing with high intensity and showed great rebounding and blocking skills.

Have they ever done poss and probs in the school sport. I agree that perhaps this would give a better indictaion of players on a level playing field. There is no denying the team that was picked were a very strong group of girls but it does make it hard for the girls who play in a weaker team to be considered. Perhaps there should be a independent group of selecters apart from coaches and managers who are involved with teams, to sit and look at all the teams playing over the 3 days.

Yes, Qld was well represented by our young girls in Melbourne at the National comps over the weekend.
Spartans did exceptionally well at the VJBL National Classics, as noted above, showing that our young Qld girls can mix it with the best of them. They had some tough, tight games down there, and managed some good wins against quality Victorian teams with tenacious defence. Was really good to watch them have to fight to get some of the wins against the Vics.
Ipswich also came down, and played in the Nunawading tournament. Every game they played in was quality, they were in every game and were never thrashed. They were able to put together a couple of good wins as well, including there final game vs Waverley. Fantastic send-off for Bailey.
Really good showing by all the Qld girls, the future's looking up.

Well, I think personally that the state team chosen was the best team that could have been selected. It was obvious that the Met. East were extremely dominant of the whole competition and I reckon that all of the Met. East Girls actually could have deserved a place in the team. But apparently there is a limit in how many girls they can choose from one region. Chris Brown (not M. Brown) is a great coach, but I do not think that he had a huge say in the team selected. Good luck to QLD in Darwin. GO AWHINA!

I've seen a player (not necessarily in basketball) who got more respect from opposing coaches than her own coach, not even make a possible/probable team. An opposing coach (who, by the way, played in 2 Olympics for Australia for that sport) said she should have made the state team. That's the way it goes sometimes. That's sport. What 12 year olds (and their parents) do in response to such situations can be fantastic character building (or not) for later in life. That's what sport is all about (so I've come to learn).

I think that you are naive to think that Coach Brown and his assistant do not have "a huge say" in the team that was selected and even more naive to think that he would not have a bias towards his own players (who wouldn't) who knows them better than their own Coach ? They have the first say and the final say in the team that is picked. He would pick the team that he thinks a382agwill serve him best in the Tournament. Mel Bateman would have been the first kid picked and the coach managed to get five players and the assistant coach getting 2 selections that really leaves 2 spots up for grabs for all the kids that were playing.
Come back in a few years time and and scan the names of the kids playing 16 and 18 State teams or Rep Teams and it will have little or no resemblance to the names that are there now. That's just the way it is.

Have a look at last years State team, compare it to the girls who excelled in the U14 State Championships this year, and tell me that the selectors got it wrong:
Bridget O’Brien
Khaedin Taito
Brittany Fuller
Aleisha Ennis
Kellianne Saul
Annaleise Stoyko
Krystle McKenzie
Milly Disseldorf
Natalie St Clair
Regan McCarty
Of that team, Bridget O'Brien was the only girl to be selected from the Met East team. There weren't 5 spots reserved for Met East girls just because Chris was the coach. Other girls may well overtake these girls in the future, but they're not picking a team for 4 years down the track - their picking a team for now.
This years Met East team were clearly deeper/better than anything the opposition could throw at them. A blind monkey could have seen that. Other teams clearly didn't have that luxury, but that's not the Met East's girls fault. They came, they saw, they conquered, what else did you want them to do to earn selection?

Mel's not my daughter, and I didn't write that post, but I know who she is. She's the girl who carried the Maroochydore girls 1 year ago in U12 to a silver medal in the BQJBC, and 5th at the Classics. I think she averaged about 30 points/game that season, and scored 50 against Cairns if my memory serves me right. This season she played for Northside, and was about their top guard despite being bottom age.
She didn't appear to have that sort of impact with the Sun Coast team at Toowoomba, but was still a consistent scorer, and one of only a couple of girls there with a consistent jump shot to compliment her drive. With some quality bigs to play with, she'll do well.

This season she played for Northside, and was about their top guard despite being bottom age.
.
Is that the child who switched to Northside then got beaten by her old Maroochydore team at Classics only to come off the court and cop the most embarrassing public dressing down by her Mother? Might be a different girl but felt really sorry for the kid leaving her friends to follow her Mothers unrealistic expectations then got beat by her old team then copped a verbal tirade from good old Mum. Sad.

Who's Mel Bateman?
Your Daughter?
I didn't notice her...
Why is everyone having a public slanging match against each other regarding the Qld team picked. My daughter competed in the comp and was not picked for the team but it was obvious to me that the strongest team was picked from what was available. The team has been picked so why doesn't everyone move forward and let the girls do the talking in August when they go to Darwin.

what a disgrace the last couple of pages of posts are.....the ugly parent syndrome is STILL alive and well....all anonymous sniping...and bitching....and putting kids down in this public forum is an absolute disgrace. I hope to god none of you are in any program I am involved with.....have a good hard look at yourselves.....
great effort by those teams that went to Melbourne.....

After reading this post, I just wanted to make further comment
Of the girls above, four (three from Logan) featured in the Classics Final while all of the other players, except Krystle (get better soon) who had a dreadful ankle injury in the quarters I think, starred for their teams all tournament
Why sling off at a coach who picked last years State Team based on form and potential, coming equal first is pretty damn good and then has his selections vindicated based on this years results. I think it's nonsense to rubbish someone who obviously got it right
Not only can Chris Brown spot talent, the results of the Met East team at Tournament also makes it impossible not to pick the top players from that team
Ask the players who should be in the team and I bet they pick the same players

Congratulations to the Southern districts u12 girls and their coach who finished 5th at Nationals in Melbourne. What a great opportunity for the girls to play tough Vic teams and step up when needed. The Girls were only beaten by 2 teams and those two teams went on to play off in the grandfinal. What a great achievment for a Qld team to finish 5th out of 16 teams from all over Australia, well done girls.
I have seen this coach in action at games before.. I have to take my hat off to him for his cool and calm approach to coaching. If only alot of other coaches could take a leaf out of his book. It just goes to show that treating the girls with respect will win you more games and respect then yelling at them if they do something wrong. Good on you!!!! I know is daughter is a very good player and selected for the Qld school team. Best of luck!!!

Not likely then, where is she going? I bet there will be some dissappointed parents at SD then.
