MEDIA RELEASE
The season may have just finished but preparation is well under way for the 2008 South East Australian Basketball League campaign at Southern Districts Basketball Association based at the Clem Jones Centre in Carina.
“We are happy to announce that Bruce Andrews returns to the fold after a season within the QABL to coach our development team in the under 20 age groups in the newly formed Southern Queensland competition. His squad will be made up of some of Queenslands finest young players” offered General Manager Allan Ladewig. “Joining him in the coaching ranks we see long time player and supporter Corey Burrell taking up the reigns of the under 20 men. He will be under the watchful eye of State Under 20 men’s coach Spartans legend, Damien Anderson” he went on to add.
Ensuring that the Arrow Caravan & Towbar Spartans and the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans have a solid base from which to select next years squads from a new format attracting teams from as far away as Caloundra has started in the new Carina Leagues Club “A” grade competition on Monday nights.
“The off season for us is all about next year now and we have done a lot of works behind the scenes to make sure in 2008 we are the best we can be both on and off the floor’ stated Allan Ladewig.
“In the juniors we have done a huge amount of work and we are sure that in all age groups both make and female, we will be successful in all grades. This coming season in Queenslands largest junior competition the BQJBC we will have more teams competing then any other Association. At the recent grading event we were one of only three Associations that had a team accepted for the Premier League”.
“The Association has its Presentation night coming up on October fourth at the Carina Leagues Club and we will be making some huge announcements concerning new sponsorship plus the formation of a local business group who will be the driving force in years to come of our SEABL campaign allowing us to concentrate on the juniors” stated President, Charles Ellis. “We are all looking forward to 2008 the year that we look to again dominate basketball in Queensland”.

END OF YEAR
A reminder that the season is coming to an end and that the new season nominations will be out next week. They must be submitted by dates set to ensure we operate as best we can.
TIDY IS BEST
Guys the Association runs on a very tight budget so we all need to pull our weight when it comes to the little things. If you or your team pulls out chairs or rubbish bins as part of on court training please put them back. If your team needs rings wound down on court 2 you must put them back up.
DUNKING IS NOT ALLOWED
If junior or senior players are caught shooting around on the court 2 lowered rings they will be suspended without warning. This includes representative players. For seniors on standard rings you may dunk in a game but hanging off rings during warm up or game will result in a suspension. This is an occupational health and safety issue and is now the policy of Basketball Australia.
SIN BIN
Get a technical foul in any game and you will sit out the next five minutes.
UNIFORMS
All teams need to be in full uniform. Players not in full gear will have a 5 point penalty applied to score sheet. No exceptions.
BLUE CARD
All persons, including parents must have a Blue Card to coach or manage a junior team here next year. Please apply for the card now to save teams missing out on your valuable support in 2008.
JUNIOR SIGN ON 2008
The junior sign on for 2008 will be Saturday 2nd February from 8am till 11am at stadium. Clubs must have someone in attendance for the three hours.
LIBRARY RESOURCES
Currently we are amassing books and tapes, which can be used in coaching juniors. If you have something that you can donate please drop it off at the office. It will be a free service operating from our store on court 2.
BASKETBALL MEMBERS
On behalf of the Board of the Camp Hill Carina Welfare Association I apologise for the current car parking situation. I promise we are doing all that we can to fix the situation.
To assist everyone in understanding exactly what is going on I offer the following information for your advice.
The gate in Zahel street will remain locked in respect to the local community who live in Zahel Street and Daniell Street. I am sure all would agree that the impact of having cars parked outside your home and across drive ways, sometimes in an illegal manner is totally unacceptable. We would not accept such a situation in our home streets and we do not expect the local community to suffer or be endangered.
Those people climbing through the hole in the fence are doing so at their own peril. The access point is not a designated entry point to the grounds and those who continue to do so will be requested to leave the grounds in future. You are endangering the lives of children through such actions.
The baseball car park is closed during baseball season and will remain so. The damage that had occurred to cars in the past warrants such action and again I am sure no one wants to come out and find their car damaged by unknown persons. We did try to cover the car park at great expense but in the end this proved unsuccessful so we have removed the cover.
Probably the biggest impact currently affecting our car park shortage is that we in fact are trying to improve the size and standard of the existing car park. The recent wet weather stopping the completion of work we were doing to improve the access at the end of the baseball car park and at the back of the stadium. Hopefully this work will be finished within the next two weeks.

SEABL APPOINTS GENERAL MANAGER
SEABL has appointed former Championship coach Mark Chivers to the newly created position of League General Manager.
The Chairman of the SEABL (the South East Australian Basketball League), Mr. Hugh McMenamin, said the position had been created as part of the League’s new business plan being adopted by the SEABL Board.
The new General Manager will primarily focus on delivering the next phase of the strategic plan and will be responsible for: actively marketing the League; seeking and developing sponsorship opportunities; working closely with the member clubs to ensure the League continues to provide a satisfactory environment for them to compete in; and, importantly strengthen the Leagues standing in the Australian basketball community, most specifically the relationship with the sports governing body, Basketball Australia.
Mark Chivers had a highly successful coaching career with the Hobart Chargers and is also a highly successful businessman.
In his most recent role Mark was the General Manager of the Hobart Motor Yacht Squadron and spent five years improving the clubs financial performance whilst raising the clubs profile within the Australian Yachting community.
“Aside from Mark’s business pedigree he brings with him a passion for SEABL and strong desire to ensure the future growth and success of our great League,” McMenamin said.
Mark will begin his role on January 21st.
Mark Quinn and Michael Aylen will continue in their current roles as League Manager and as Finance Officer respectively.

TWENTY FIVE YEARS
Who would have thought twenty five years ago the amalgamation of the Inala Aliens and the Generals Basketball Clubs would have created such a power in the Queensland basketball community.
Starting operations at the QEII sporting complex, now home to the Queensland Academy of Sport, the two clubs united and affiliated with Basketball Queensland on the 2nd August 1982.
Since then they have moved to the Rowland Cowan Stadium at the Clem Jones Youth Centre where they operate a four court stadium with plans for another two air conditioned courts.
In the nineties they became the largest ever Association in Queensland with nearly 3500 members operating at numerous venues.
Today, rather then numbers, they pursue excellence and have even joined “Australia’s Premier Winter Basketball League” the South East Australia Basketball League where they compete against teams from at far away as Hobart in Tasmania and Mt Gambier in South Australia.
It goes without saying that the junior program at Southern Districts is second to none with one of Queenslands largest school based programs in operation. The Underpinning program conducted every year in support of the Queensland Academy Sport is also the largest.
This year to celebrate the success of the Association a dinner is planned for the 23rd August at the Carina Leagues. Tickets will be on sale from March 10th from the office.
Past players and members are welcome to attend, however limited seating is available so get in early.

All juniors and coaching staff are asked to attend that night wearing their black Spartans shirt. We also encourage as many members of the community as possible to be in attendance.

We ask that everyone be seated by 6:30pm when the promotion will start.

Spartans: Lest We Forget
Since 1915, one day in the year has involved the whole of Australia in solemn ceremonies of remembrance, gratitude and national pride.
That day is Anzac Day – 25th April.
Why does a nation pause to remember this day? It is because that day, 25th April, 1915, was the day when Australia as a nation faced supreme test of quality and courage, the landing on the beach at Gallipoli of Australian and New Zealand soldiers.
Ninety-three years later, the Arrow Caravans & Towbars Spartans will pay tribute to the Anzac’s at their home clash against the Mt Gambier Pioneers on Saturday 26th April 2008.
In a special production headed up by Spartans Life Member, Steve Lennon, and backed and supported by Spartans General Manager Allan Ladewig and Spartans Operations Manager Big Joe, the tribute will be all bells and whistles to recognise the special occasion.
But the trio are keeping tight lipped about details.
“It’s something I thought would be appropriate. It’s a great avenue to educate the kids who may not know what the Anzacs were about, the why, the who and the when,” Lennon said.
“It’s more for recognition of the occasion also, from the kids to the adults, it’s a great opportunity to remember and more importantly recognise,” Ladewig added.
The tribute will take place just after team introductions, (6:40pm) in the darkness of the night and will go for approximately five minutes.
Special thanks must go to the visiting Mt Gambier Pioneer team for working with the Spartans in making this tribute possible.
“I emailed them to inform them of what we wanted to do and they were more then supportive of the event,” Big Joe said. “They didn’t have to, but they expressed they wanted to be a part of it, so special thanks to Coach Ray de Wit and his players,” he added.
The SEABL conference Management and staff have also fully supported the tribute.

Spartans Farewell Big Joe
Long time Southern District Spartans Team Manager and Brisbane Bullets Manager Big Joe is scheduled to depart the shores of Australia on Tuesday 23 September 2009 to take up a management role with Cyprus based professional basketball Club, Seastar Apoel.
Having played all his junior basketball at the Southern Districts Basketball Association and more recently been the Team Manager of the Brisbane Bullets for the past 9 seasons, the basketball community in general will be losing a very big personality.
With the recent demise of the Brisbane Bullets the second time around, it became apparent that Big Joe was not going to find a home in the NBL for the upcoming 08/09 season.
“I went down to Melbourne and contacted the clubs whom I am close with but the second time we went down was simply too late and a lot of them had already made arrangements for the role to be filled,” Big Joe stated.
“I was one week too late with one club and just two days too late with another but that’s the nature of the game and this industry,” he added.
Having a double bachelors degree in business, Big Joe was nearly forced to return to the books as an accountant before getting an early morning 1am call from good friend and former Bullets head coach, Joey Wright.
“I was driving back from the Coast and got a text message saying to pick up the next call from a private number,” Big Joe said.
“It was Joey (Wright) who asked me if I’d be keen to join him over there, if a deal could be put in place. He called and we finalised it all and now I’m off,” he concluded.
Big Joe has been an extremely popular member of the basketball community here in Brisbane and throughout the nation, having involvement in just about all aspects of basketball from juniors to seniors both nationally and internationally.
“There is no doubt he will be missed by the entire basketball community,” Spartans General Manager Allan Ladewig said.
“He is extremely well liked, gets along with everyone and is just one of those guys who you know will be at any basketball event helping out where needed. I know we will miss him immensely.”
He has managed Queensland State teams, the Spartans junior and senior men’s teams in the QABL and SEABL to name a few, has co-organised State and National Championships and was an instrumental part of the all conquering Brisbane Bullets team of 06/07 who won an amazing 26 games straight enroot to the NBL Championship.
“Everything is just going so fast right now. I am really going to miss Brisbane, the people here and of course my mates,” Big Joe said.
“There is so many people I need to thank, but the three main people who stick out in my mind are Narelle Kelly (Former Bullets Operations Manager) Madonna Grimley (Virginblue Groups) and Eddy Groves (Former Bullets Owner) for everything over the past 9 wonderful seasons.”
Club Apoel requested Big Joe arrive in Nicosia on Monday 8 September 2008 but this was simply impossible but flights have now been confirmed to depart Brisbane next Tuesday, 23 September 2008.
“The first preference is to stay here in Brisbane, there is no doubt about that, but at this stage, that’s not looking likely. If a job opportunity presents itself before next Monday, I would stay in a heartbeat,” he concluded. “ I will of course be checking out players, while in Europe, for the Arrow Caravan and Towbar Spartans, my home town SEABL team. We already have some huge signing in Mick Hill, Adam Gibson, Greg Vanderjagt and at least three other current NBL players along with one of Australia’s best coach’s, making the trek to Carina in 2009”.
With that in mind and pending a working VISA approval by the Cypriot Consulate at this stage, it’s full steam ahead. The European season is scheduled to end on 25 April 2009 with Big Joe will return to Brisbane early April 2009 and will re-link back into the SEABL with the Southern Districts Spartans and hopefully the new Brisbane based NBL structure currently under review.

It is with great sadness that the Spartans on Friday lost one of the men who made it all possible, Mr Trevor Bishop.
Trevor was not a basketballer but in his role with the Clem Jones Youth Centre was one of the people who made things possible. His tireless work for the community saw many things accomplished under his management and direction. He was the current driving force behind the Clem Jones Trust which built the Rowland Cowan Stadium and was driving many of the new extensions planned within the grounds.
Trevor was a person who did things for the ciommunity. A volunteer and administrator till the end Trevor made lots of things possible for our community and Association.
Southern Districts has lost a great man but he will not be forgotten.
Thanks Mr Bishop.

Big Joe’s Blog #4 – I’m Back
So after either being lazy or just too busy, I thought I’d better update what’s happening on my side of the world.
I have now been here for just over 5 weeks and after an admitted slow start, I’m starting to really like it. I got my unit, I got my car and I got my first pay cheque so it’s all happening.
I must admit, my eyes have been wide open. Things are so different needless to say and I am trying my hardest to get used to it.
October 3 was the worst day of all though, just extremely homesick, plus it was my birthday and to not be at home for that is a big thing for me personally. I did however receive a stack of texts so thank you all. I did feel loved although was prepared to jump on a plane and come home, that day!
From previous blogs, I wanted to let you know that the condition of the court is slowly getting better with my expert sweeping, consisting of a wet towel and a scissor mop. Although here, they don’t have the big fold out one, they have one small mop about 1 metre wide so I’m getting my daily workout just by cleaning the floors every day.
Mick Tarrant from Auchenflower would be extremely impressed with my sweeping techniques. Although I nearly fell over when I went into training yesterday and the Stadium Manager was actually doing the floor. WOW, he was actually doing his job!
I am still living at Joey’s house. My unit has been ready for the past few weeks now and I have moved a few items in there but haven’t actually moved MYSELF in there yet. Actually, Joey doesn’t want me to leave is the real reason.
The only drama at Joey’s is that there is no Internet. It’s been killing me but the other day the funniest thing happened. I was in his backyard just sitting in the sun playing on my laptop and noticed the wireless icon was on half. So I just opened up Safari to try and BINGO, I was online!!! I screamed and woke Joey up and we were like two kids with candy. It was so funny, you had to be here obviously to really appreciate it.
So we’re out in his backyard every minute of the day we are home on our laptops stealing Internet from one of his neighbours. But prior to that, we found a unsecured wireless connection just down the road, so we’d jump in his car at 11pm at night and sit in front of a random house for an hour or so just to get online.
After a grooling pre-season (11 games in 15 days) and only 2 wins from them all, we had our first Championship game last Monday against Enad at home. They were considered an “easy” team and it showed right from the start.
Our Captain and centre, JoJo Garcia hit like the first 8 points and we were off and rolling. The lead ballooned out to as much as 28 throughout the game however we ended up winning that game by 12 points. Bottom line, a win is a win. We’ll take it any way we can.
We have our second game tomorrow night on the road and then our first weekend off in a long long time. So I’m off to Athens for the weekend to visit Brad Newly and watch him play a game.
Oh I forgot to mention that I went to France a couple of weeks ago for a game against Vichy. It was a Euro Cup Challenge game. Like a totally separate tournament from our regular season and it’s straight knock out. We play a team twice, once at home and one away and the difference of both games is calculated to see who advances.
Unfortunately we lost at home and on the road so the difference doesn’t matter. We were knocked out, however it was my first time in France and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Not this weekend, but the following, we play a team called Ael. Now apparently, Ael is like our biggest, fiercest, most hated rival in the competition. I’m talking State of Origin rival. That much hatred apparently and, while I haven’t experienced it yet, you can tell there is so much hate right there.
It’s the big dog versus the little dog. They have a massive budget, we have a normal budget. They have a big stadium, we have a normal stadium. They’re always meant to beat us, but we always win. So the story goes. I’m really looking forward to it.
Oh and the fans, WOW. The fans here are amazing! They come in with massive drums and whistles and sing and dance ALL GAME. Even during free throws, they just keep singing and dancing. I’m talking thousands all singing and clapping at the top of their lungs. I will try to get video of it but if you youtube APOEL BASKETBALL FANS you will get a rough idea.
It’s simply amazing and I have been told what we saw last week at our first regular season game was nothing compared to what they dish out during the playoffs. I’m really looking forward to that also.
Until next time,
Big Joe

Big Joe’s Blog #5 – Last week spat on, this week Stadium Destruction & Riot
So, after last week’s disgusting antics by the home crowd towards us while on the road, last night we returned home to what I thought would have been a much less hostile and safer environment, for us anyway.
How wrong I was!
We played a team called Ael. Now, word around the traps is that this is the most hated rival of my team. Like total distain for one another. Hatred doesn’t even begin to describe the relationship between these two clubs.
I’m talking State of Origin, times 100-type hatred. Australia v England Rugby World Cup type hatred. Detroit Pistons v Chicago Bulls back in the day type hatred. Are you all getting the picture?
I get to the stadium a couple of hours before tip off and already I see the signs of an expected big night. I was told to park my car down and around the corner from the stadium. I walk into the stadium and I see riot police. I’m talking 20 – 30 of them compared to the usual 3 uniformed police we have during home games.
Anyway, I set up our change room and relax a little bit. Team Ael arrive and they actually seem like a bunch of nice blokes. A couple of them speak to me, and a couple of my players and every thing seem to be hunky dory.
Every thing else just seems normal. Team talk, then warm ups, no worries. The crowd is much bigger then I’ve ever seen and they are in voice. The big drums are there and they begin their chants and hated all aimed at Ael.
Now the fans are about 1.5 meters from the sideline, elevated by about 2 meters so they are close, they pretty much sit on top of you. None of the Ael players wanted to go anywhere near the sideline. I noticed during warm ups that a ball of theirs was knocked onto the sideline and they just left if there. They weren’t game enough to go get it right under the Apoel fans.
So, the game starts and the chanting does too. They are loud. Real loud! It was really amazing and I took some video footage on my phone but I don’t know how to upload it yet, but when I do, you’ll be the first to see it, don’t worry.
Four minutes into the game, the refs make a couple of calls against us. The fans start a chant in Greek, saying something to the effect that the refs mother is a whore, plus a bunch of other things I just can’t write. So the refs decide to run off the court and into their change rooms much to the dismay of the fans.
As they run into the tunnel, the fans start throwing coins, drinks, bottles, cigarettes and pretty much anything they could find at them. So the game stops for about 10 minutes to clean up the court and settle the fans down. I have never seen anything like that before.
The refs finally come back out and like the Ael players, none of them wanted to run the sideline where our fans are. I watch as they do and our fans are spitting on them and the Ael players just like I was getting spat on last weekend on the road. It’s horrible to see, it really is. Very disappointing and extremely disgusting!
So back to the reason why we are all there, the game. It’s a good one. Ael take the lead early by as much as 12 points but we reel them in and take the lead on a massive three point bomb from point guard Lonnie Cooper and the place erupts.
The fans find another pitch in their voices and the noise reaches a deafening crescendo. Oh and I forgot to mention, every time Ael had the ball, everyone in the stadium started whistling. Like that loud whistle that people do when they stick two fingers in their mouths? DEAFENING!
So we have the lead coming into the fourth quarter but Ael make a run and we end up losing the game by 5 or 6 points. As soon as the final buzzer goes off Ael does everything they can to get out of the floor area as soon as possible. On their way out, one of the Ael players has an altercation with one of my Committee members and it’s on. On like Donkey Kong!
About 200 of the fans climb over the barrier, onto the court and into the tunnel throwing anything they could find. Chairs, bottles, cigarettes, rocks and I’m not talking small rocks, I’m talking rocks the size of tennis balls. In fact the coach of Ael got hit in the head with a rock!
It’s mayhem in the tunnel area, my team and I are still on the floor waiting for it all to subside and luckily they were our fans so they didn’t want to kill us at least. Finally things die down a little and we manage to get through into the change room.
Now our change room is right next to the visitors change room. I’m outside ours waiting for team talk to end and I hear the sound of glass smash. The fans were throwing rocks at the window of the Ael change room. They tore off the bars, got into their change room and stole and destroyed everything.
We got them out of their change room and into ours, as we knew our fans wouldn’t smash our change room. While this is happening, 200 of the fans are trying to push through 6 or 7 of the riot police who have helmets and those body length shields to get to the Ael players and pretty much kill them!
So we are all in this tiny hallway, some of the players and coaches are in the showers of the change rooms as that was the safest place to be but JoJo and I are on the front line because I was outside doing ice and they sent JoJo out to try and calm the fans down as he is a major big time player here. He’s like Leroy Loggins was at home in his hay day.
Plus all the showers were full with my players, Ael players and staff so we really had nowhere else to go to hide or even protect ourselves.
JoJo runs back and says to me, “get back man, they’re not going to stop until they get in here, they’re right there,” and at that point I was terrified! I could see it in JoJo’s face that he was shaky too. I peak around the corner and the crowd is like right there at the glass doors. I’m talking a meter and a half away from storming the hallway to the change rooms.
Everyone is terrified at this point as there was no escape at all. No fire door, nothing. If those fans made it in, I have no idea what would have or could have happened.
While all this is happening, I hear glass smashing, I see flares being lit, newspapers being set on fire and thrown at us, screaming, loud bangs and so much noise. It was like something you’d see in the movies!
Everyone is on their phones calling the Police and once they finally arrive, the crowd disperses, but that was after about 20 minutes of constant bombardment to us, and the stadium.
So they all leave and things quieten down. It’s safe for us all, both teams to leave the showers in the change rooms and see the aftermath. I walk out to take a look, I head down the hallway to the glass door, which are smashed and ripped off the hinges.
It’s a war zone. A big rubbish bin dumpster was thrown in the foyer area, the rubbish in it was set on fire. Every window smashed, glass everywhere, doors torn off hinges, rocks the size of tennis balls and BIGGER all over the floor that was obviously thrown in by the fans.
It was total destruction out there. We were so lucky the building was made of besser bricks otherwise we’d have been done. A terrible way to end the night and what was a really good game. Yes we lost, but the game was awesome, the fans singing and cheering was awesome and then this is how the night ended.
I was scared. I’m a grown ass man, and I’m happy to say that I was terrified! Well not happy but not ashamed to say that I was scared. Maybe if I wasn’t on the frontline I’d have been less scared, but I was scared!
I thought I had seen it all but this is a whole new level. If this was done to us but OUR OWN FANS in our own building, can you imagine what the Ael fans will do to us when we go to their place?
I know this; I don’t think I will be here long enough to find out.
Will most probably see you all real soon,
Big Joe

SEABL DEFIES BASKETBALL GLOOM WITH GROWTH
SEABL General Manager Mark Chivers has announced the Dandenong Basketball Association and the Southern Basketball Associations (Sandringham) have applied to join SEABL in 2009. The applications are subject to ratification by Basketball Australia and, providing there are no problems, the teams will participate in the 2009 competition.
Together the teams make SEABL stronger than ever before. Dandenong, SEABL champions in 1986, 1997, and 2004, returns to SEABL after participating in the Big V competition from 2005 through 2008. Sandringham, a perennial finalist in the Big V and regular participant in the annual ABA national finals, joins SEABL for the first time; but in national ABA competition Sandringham has amply demonstrated that it’s more than prepared to step up to SEABL. Dandenong and Sandringham join a national league with clubs in Victoria, New South Wales, ACT, South Australia, Queensland, and Tasmania.
According to Simon Brookhouse, SEABL Chairman, the addition of these two associations to SEABL means 8 of the strongest basketball associations in Australia are now participating in the league. Both Sandringham and Dandenong bring women’s teams to SEABL as well as their men’s teams. In addition, each association is noted for its strong junior program with its junior teams regularly vying for honours in the Victorian junior championships. With strong junior programs Sandringham and Dandenong epitomise SEABL’s policy of providing clearly defined pathways for basketball juniors to move from elite junior basketball to elite senior competition.
In the past decade SEABL has delivered not only top flight competition and entertainment to its audiences, but it has also developed a top flight administration to keep the competition moving smoothly.
The administration oversees one of Australia’s largest sporting competitions with more than 220,000 supporters passing through league venues each week. Advertisers have come to recognise how grass roots basketball delivers a key demographic of young families. As advertisers become increasingly aware of the link between young families and basketball, SEABL can look to develop new sponsorship arrangements with advertisers keen to reach this demographic.
The continued growth of SEABL shows reports of basketball’s demise have been exaggerated. With strong administration and a sound business model, basketball can succeed in Australia.

SEABL Development League – A Pathway Created
SEABL Development League Director Ben Turner announced the formation of a new Development League for both men and women to commence in the 2009 Season. The SEABL Development League will be sponsored by Crazy John’s as part of their continued involvement with community based basketball programs.
Turner said “that following requests to the Board from Victorian SEABL member clubs, and working with Basketball Victoria and the Big V, the Crazy John’s D League has been formed. The Crazy John’s D League will enable those Clubs the opportunity to create a consistent pathway for players, coaches, administrators & officials. The Crazy John’s D League provides a straight line development pathway for Clubs from the VJBL to senior basketball while continue to hold a strong connection to community grass roots basketball The Crazy John’s D League will provide a high standard of competition while providing both fiscal and marketing benefits to member clubs.
Turner said “the Crazy John’s D League would be administered from the SEABL Office and will be run in conjunction with the Senior SEABL Men’s and Women’s Competitions with a view to allowing our future Boomers and Opals players the opportunity to gain experience training and playing with their Senior program.”
“Initially the Crazy John’s D League will consist of Victorian based clubs, but the Office will be working with our interstate members to assist them in developing their own youth development programs and it is envisaged that in future year these teams will participate in invitational tournaments throughout the season” Turner said.
Crazy John’s is excited to be involved as Naming Rights sponsor for both the “Crazy John’s SEABL Championship” and the “Crazy John’s D League.” Matt Scriven, Head of Marketing for Crazy John’s, said “Crazy John’s was keen to sponsor the sport at a grass-roots level as part of the business’ commitment to supporting the local communities in which it operates.”
The sponsorship arrangement between SEABL and Crazy John’s is also reflective of the shared values of both organisations, with both SEABL and Crazy John’s dedicated to delivering a superior product for their members and customers and a strong organisational culture for their staff.

Spartans & Emus Join to Support Fire & Flood Appeal
The Southern Districts Basketball Association has answered the SOS from their fellow Queenslanders up in the flood ravaged northern region and their friends in Country Victoria who have battled the latest fires and disaster by announcing a three game series between their very own South East Australian Basketball League team, the Brisbane Spartans and the Australian Emus (Under 19 men) in late February 2009.
In 2007 the Australian Emus finished 5th in the rankings and had the Spartans very own, Chris Goulding represent his country.
The 2009 Australian Emus, who will travel to New Zealand in July for the FIBA World Championships, will be comprised from the current crop of students at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) dominated by Queenslanders.
The AIS squad currently includes Queenslanders from Townsville, Logan, Maroochydore, Cairns, Southern Districts and Brisbane all vying for a spot in the twelve man team who will take on powerhouse Nations such as the USA, China, Canada and Greece, and with so many Queenslanders, it was fitting to play the three game series in Brisbane.
The Australian Emus wanted the very best preparation possible and felt it was going to done best in Brisbane against the Spartans coached by National Basketball League and Australian Coach, Bruce Palmer. The games will be played on Friday 27th February, Saturday 28th February and Sunday 1st March at the Rowland Cowan Stadium at the Clem Jones Youth Centre in Carina with all proceeds being donated to the fire and flood appeals respectively.
“We wanted to do something for both our northern neighbours in Queensland and our Victorian countrymen, who are both suffering so much” offered Allan Ladewig, General Manager of the Spartans. “We knew we had the series planned so it was a given that the funds from the games should be passed on to those who need the support. The Association is proud to able to assist as we know so many others are”.
The entrance for the three games will be a donation with all funds going to both appeals. Corporate seating is available and those requiring additional information need to contact the Association direct on 3398 2790. All three games are expected to have full houses.
The series will give the Brisbane community and basketball lovers in general the opportunity to watch the very best young players in the Nation play. Due to the World Championships being played in July, the AIS SEABL team will not be coming to Brisbane for a regular season game which they do every year against the Brisbane Spartans.
“I would urge everyone to come down for two good reasons. One, to support the victims from the fire and floods, and secondly because this is really the only opportunity to see these young talented boys play right here in Brisbane this year,” Spartans head coach Bruce Palmer said.
The FIBA World Championships will gather the world’s top talent in New Zealand and this will include 12 of these superstar players in the making.
Many of today’s stars such as our very own Andrew Bogut, Linas Kleiza, Jose Berrea, Vince Carter and many others have made their international debuts in this competition. The talent at display will be incredible and the Brisbane basketball community can look forward to the most exciting players basketball has to offer.

SOUTHERN DISTRICTS FIRST IN QUEENSLAND .
GUNN 6000 SHOOTING MACHINE
The Southern Districts Basketball Association become the first Association in Queensland to unveil the latest in technology with the Gunn 6000 shooting machine this week. Importe from the USA the machine takes away the need for a rebounder for all shooting practices .
"The Gunn” is the best basketball shooting machine to date for dramatically improving all players shot. This basketball shooting machine will act as an automatic rebounder, instantly rebounding a made or missed shot and giving a direct return pass for another shot. The Gunn has a timing device so you can determine the distance and the speed of your return passes, thus creating situations where players can develop their shooting skills on the move and with game like intensity. The Gunn can fire up to 1800 shots per hour (every 2 seconds ) and has an optional computerized scoreboard that counts and displays, makes, total shots and shooting percentage.
Allan Ladewig, General Manager Southern Districts Basketball association offered “We are overwhelmed by the response the players have had to the machine although it has only been in the Association one week. "This is certainly the way of the future with seniors, juniors male and female players able to develop their shooting skills from all over the court simply by adjusting a few settings”.
“Who wouldn’t be happier ." Coach of the Spartans mens team, Bruce palmer, also added. “We have already introduced The Gunn to the SEABL men’s program encouraging the players to get down to the court and use. To be able to get between 300 to 500 shots up in half an hour this has to be an advantage at all levels of the sport”.
It is believed over 5000 teams world wide are now using the machine as part of there basketball programs including the Australian Institute of Sport here in Australia.
The members of the Association and public will be able to access the use of the machine from Easter, when Sunday sessions will be available for people to do the Spartans shooters program under the guidance of the SEABL player, Greg Vanderjagt, who is currently writing up programs for all different levels and standards.

Goulding’s Back For 3-game Series Against AIS
The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Brisbane Spartans has received a boost with confirmation star guard Chris Goulding will return to Brisbane this weekend ahead of their three game series against the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) at Carina Basketball Stadium.
Goulding who was forced to make the move west to play for the Perth Wildcats after the demise of the Brisbane Bullets, initially signed a contract as a development player, a position was all too familiar with in Brisbane for the previous two seasons.
Early in the 2008/09 NBL season, Goulding didn’t see a lot of court time, however over the past few rounds Goulding was given the opportunity he was craving and didn’t let down.
With last week’s shock first round loss in the NBL playoffs to a hot Townsville Crocodiles team, his services in Perth is over for the season. While discussions for the coming seasons are underway, Goulding is allowed to return home and will play this weekend against the AIS.
“It’s fantastic news,” Spartans head coach Bruce Palmer said. “Chris is a local junior, he is explosive and very entertaining to watch. His availability to play this weekend will only add to the already impressive show-piece this will turn out to be,” he added.
The AIS was looking to sharpen themselves for the upcoming SEABL season but more importantly, prepare to the Under 19 World Championships to be held in July 2009 in New Zealand and with eight AIS athletes hailing from Queensland, it was appropriate to play the games in Brisbane.
Because the World Championships are being held this year, the AIS will not travel to Brisbane for a regular season SEABL game, so when the opportunity presented itself, the Spartans grabbed it with both hands.
Game one on Friday and game two on Saturday will both tip off at 7:30pm with Sunday’s game three tipping off at 2pm with all games being played at the Carina Basketball Stadium.
The series has been dubbed “The Fire & Flood Appeal Series” with all proceeds from all three games being donated directly to both funds respectively.

Brisbane Spartans – Launched
Brisbane’s newest basketball teams, the Brisbane Spartans and the Brisbane Lady Spartans were officially launched in front of a packed house at the Carina Leagues Club last night.
Local and State politicians were in attendance to witness the historic launch and throw their support behind the name change and the Association in its new direction. Past Spartans greats were on hand also, including Olympian Trish Cochrem, Scott Lloyd and Paul Rasmussen.
“It’s a historic moment, so we wanted the people who made us what we are today to be there,” Spartans General manager Allan Ladewig said.
Naming right’s sponsors of both teams, Arrow Caravans & Towbars and the Carina Leagues Club, Chief Executives were both on hand to introduce the teams and present the players with their 2009 uniform. Scott Lloyd, who wore the #9 singlet, personally presented the 2009 #9 singlet to Ash Cannan a former NBL star who has joined the ranks for the coming season.
With the unfortunate demise of the Brisbane Bullets, the former Southern Districts Spartans felt it was appropriate to implement the name change to represent the entire city in “Australia’s Premier Winter Basketball League, the South East Australian Basketball league.
The SEABL is considered by many to be the very best level of weekly competition available behind the NBL with most teams boasting two American imports and top line NBL players and includes teams from South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, Canberra and of course, Queensland.
Not only does the name change mean the Spartans will represent the entire city of Brisbane in a National competition, it also insures all the Southern and interstate teams know exactly where the Spartans and Lady Spartans come from.
The Brisbane Spartans will embark on a three-game series against the Australian Institute of Sport this weekend at the Carina Basketball Stadium with Friday and Saturday night’s games tipping off at 7:30pm and Sunday’s game tipping off at 2pm with all proceeds being donated to the Fire and Flood Appeals.

The Southern Districts basketball program shone in every area this week when they dominated the sport in both seniors and juniors.
The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Brisbane Spartans started the week-end by winnning their fourth straight SEABL game in a row in another thriller against newcomers the Dandenong Rangers, 114 – 111 in Brisbane on Friday night.
With the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans enjoying the weekend off, the Brisbane Spartans men were the showpiece event for the night and they didn’t disappoint.
After a sluggish start and six points behind at the end of the first quarter, the Spartans turned things around in the second, outscoring the visitors 39 – 24 in that period, enjoying a nine point lead into the main break.
The lead was reduced to just five points at the end of the third, setting up a mouth watering fourth quarter of SEABL basketball. A fiery clash erupted midway between Spartans Tyson Demos and Rangers Vince Inglima who exchanged words, resulting in unsportsmanlike fouls and many free throws.
A total of 77 free throws were attempted from both teams during the stop-start game.
Last weeks SEABL Player of the Week, Chris Goulding lead with 26 points with Greg Vanderjagt adding 25 points and 13 rebounds with Ash Cannan chipping in a valuable 23 points against his former team.
Vince Inglima led all scorers with 35 points and Dusty Jura close behind him with 29 points for the Rangers.
The Brisbane Spartans have now won four straight games and are yet to taste defeat this season and are sitting on top of the Eastern Conference SEABL ladder.
“It obviously makes a big difference having a complete team at the start of this thing,” Spartans head coach Bruce Palmer said. “In previous seasons at this time, we are 0 – 3 or 1 – 4 or something like that waiting for NBL players to come in. This is a marathon not a sprint. But I am very happy in where we are positioned right now,” he concluded.
In the post game function, Spartans welcomed back super-star guard Adam Gibson, the current NBL’s best defender and two-time NBL Championship winner, who presented the post game MVP award to his former Brisbane Bullets and Spartans team mate, Chris Goulding.
Both Brisbane Spartans men and women teams will be back at the Carina Basketball Stadium this Saturday night with the Carina Leagues Club Brisbane Lady Spartans playing the Launceston Tornadoes at 6pm and the Arrow Caravans & Towbars Brisbane Spartans Men taking on Albury/Wodonga Bandits at 8pm.
In the juniors the Association also showed they are a class act by winning for the second year in a row, the “Harold Peacock Shield”.
This award is presented by Basketball Queensland to the best junior program within the competition in the South East of Queensland in age groups from under 12 through to under 18 in both male and female competition. It started in October 2008 and finished on Saturday night when all grand finals being played at the Brisbane Entertainment centre at Boondall.
“We are continually looking at ways to develop our junior players and I personally want to thank all those volunteers who have coached and managed our teams over the past season” offered Charles Ellis, President of Southern Districts. “The development program, UPPS, we run between seasons is proving the difference between us and the other Associations. Our under 12 girls, under the direction of Mathew Beggs, went undefeated and our under 14 boys Cup team both won with most teams finishing in the top four”.
The Under Pinning Program starts again after Easter and this year will have again the best coaching staff available including many former NBL and WNBL players involved. It is hard work but if a young player wants to get better then they must be willing to do the extra. Persons interested in attending should contact Greg Vanderjagt on 3398 2790 during business hours.

Spartans in Pink
08-04-09, 15:53
Spartans Think PINK
The Carina Leagues Club Brisbane Lady Spartans and The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Brisbane Spartans Mens teams have both continued with their tremendous community support, and will wear PINK uniforms for all their SEABL games in May 2009 in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
In a SEABL first, the specially designed PINK basketball uniforms will be worn by all Spartans men and women players for road games in Canberra, Nunawading, Knox, Albury/Wodonga, Bendigo and Ballarat and home games against Sandringham, Knox, Mt Gambier and Dandenong.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation is the leading community-funded organization in Australia raising money for research into the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Foundation recently achieved a new milestone having now funded $55 million across 230 research programs since 1994.
The Brisbane Lady Spartans play in Bendigo and Ballart, while the Brisbane Spartans men play Canberra Gunners and the Australian Institute of Sport in the first weekend of May and all Spartans will be wearing PINK. The Brisbane fans will get their first taste of the PINK on Saturday 9 May when they return to take on Sandringham.
“I had contacted the SEABL office earlier in the year with the idea,” Spartans Operations Manager Joe Tertzakian said. “They approved it and fully support the initiative. Providing no other team wears PINK uniforms, we will be right for the entire month as no team will clash with the PINK,” he concluded.
The Spartans will officially launch the initiative at their home game on Saturday 25 April with Breast Cancer officials making the announcement and a preview of the PINK uniforms all Spartans players will wear for the month will be unveiled.
Everyone is encouraged to support this historic event and great cause, which will be coupled with a special ANZAC DAY pre-game presentation.
Lady Spartans tip off at 6pm with the Spartans men starting at 8pm.

Great Story
03-06-09, 13:17
CHRISTIAN SALECICH
03.04.09 12:42
Like many other basketball players, Christian Salecich played another sport when he was growing up. Unlike other players, Christian’s sport was not Aussie Rules or cricket or any of the other usual suspects. Christian played soccer, which is “football” for nearly all the rest of the world. Christian has a family background in soccer so playing soccer made sense. The skill level, team chemistry, and focus required in basketball appealed to Christian and his hard work lead him to the AIS.
Christian’s road to the AIS started on the Gold Coast where he began playing basketball as an 8 year old. He played on the Gold Coast through his u/18 years when he moved to Brisbane to play with the Brisbane Spartans (formerly the Southern Districts Spartans).
Two coaches who Christian remembered from his early career are Ben O’Bree and David Claxton. Ben coached Christian in club basketball and taught Christian not only about the skills of basketball but also about the importance of intensity. Christian was coached in high school by David Claxton, a long-time NBL coach, who developed Christian’s overall game. Ben and David established a solid foundation of basketball skills. Marty Clarke and Paul Gorris at the AIS have been able to build on these skills and have given Christian life skills as well.
Christian is beginning his third SEABL season, all for the AIS. His two favourite things about SEABL are the level of competition and the travel. The high level of competition means that players are faced every game with a different challenge. One game a player might be responsible for defending a great scorer while the next game the same player might have to be a scorer. This means players never have a game they can take for granted. Travelling means players need to learn how to prepare mentally and physically for games where travelling might have left them unready to play a game.
Though he does not now take any active role in coaching, Christian has maintained his contacts with his junior associations. When he retires, he plans to coach juniors; but before his coaching career begins, Christian’s major goal in basketball is to represent Australia at an Olympics or World Championships.
Having already played in the Albert Schweitzer tournament last year, where the Aussies finished third, Christian is climbing toward his goal.

FINALS Cost Structure
Dear Supporters
The finals are nearly on us and with both teams doing so well we are now looking at ensuring those who have been supporting the teams throughout the year have the first option of attending what will be a great finals series.
At this stage the men (1st) to be at home on the 8th August and we are hoping the women are not. The top 2 women’s teams do not play first week of the finals. If the women are playing then the night will be a double header.
If the men win on the 8th then they will play the Grand final here at Carina on August 22nd. If they win that then they will play in Melbourne on August 29th against winner of other Conference. For the men we will host at least 2 finals.
For the Lady Spartans it looks like they will finish 1st or 2nd , however this will not be known for at least three more weeks. Hopefully they will play as 1st here on the 15th August. If they win that one they are straight through to the Grand final in Melbourne.
Should however they lose on the 15th Then they will play at home on the 22nd August. This is the only way the women would play at home twice.
The different finals games will all be on sale from the Monday following the previous game.
I have place a flow chart over the page for your better understanding. This is a very fair system for both teams and rewards those who performed best over the season.
Below you will find the costs for all finals packages. We trust that you will be able to attend the games and support your teams the Arrow caravan & Towbar Spartans and the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans.

REFEREE APPOINTMENT
The Southern Districts Basketball Association has moved a step closer to completing the three year restructure, ensuring the best possible enjoyment for both social and serious athletes by securing the services of Stephanie Onn as the referees educator.
Onn who has been a driving force in referee development over the last few years in the southern parts of Queensland starts from next Monday in restructuring and education of both the old and new referees with a focus on referee educator development.
“We have had so many young talented officials starting here over the last ten years but we have always had trouble keeping them” offered Charles Ellis, Association President. “Stephanie is respected and knows her stuff. We advertised the position and she was without doubt the most qualified applicant”.
Onn went on to say on her appointment. “I have been involved with the game of basketball for the past 14 years. During this time I have contributed in many different ways to the promotion and running of the sport. I have coached and managed teams, held several different Club and Association management roles (Treasurer/ Vice President/ Secretary...), performed on score
benches at all levels up to ABA, successfully managed ‘game days’ (both junior, senior and BQJBC), refereed all levels of basketball up to BQ - Men’s Development League and evaluated/ coached referees up to level 2. I like what Southern Districts are doing and I wanted to be part of that”.
Recently Onn has been working with the Logan Basketball Association as the Junior Referee Development Officer. Her main focus in this role has been to bring the management and development of their junior referees up to an acceptable standard. This Onn achieved in six months and while still supporting the Logan program will turn her focus to the Southern Districts Basketball Association.
Referees and those wanting to get involved who wish to join the program should contact the office on 3398 2790.

Spartans Sign New Sponsor
Things just keep getting better at the Rowland Cowan Stadium, at the Clem Jones Youth Centre, home of the Arrow Caravan and Towbar Spartans and the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans.
Within one week of both teams securing finals in the South East Australian Basketball League the home Association, Southern Districts, has signed up “Se7en” as the newest sponsor.
“This is exciting times for us’ stated Allan Ladewig, General Manager, “After three years we are back on the finals scene. We knew when we jumped from the QABL to the SEABL competition, three years ago, things would get tougher but this year we have been able to showcase the young Queenslanders that are playing up here. Having Se7en join us as so many other local business are now is proof we made the right decision. The players are happier and the supporters love the standard’.
Se7en is the newest player on the block with the re-invigoration of the classic Aussie sandwich with additions featuring “All Day Breakfast Sandwiches” and salads with a high energy modem feel.
The first two Se7en stores to open were at the Calamvale Central Shopping Centre and the Capalaba Central shopping Centre with a third about to open at Garden City. Another five are planned over the next twelve months.
“We at Se7en are proud to be involved with the professionalism of Allan and the Southern Districts team and the great work they do not only for basketball, but as importantly. The greater community.
“Go the Brisbane Spartans” said Se7en operations manager Robert Sawkins.
“The Association is proud to have Se7en join us as we move towards the finals” offered Charles Ellis, President. “The products they sell are healthy and geared for the family just as we are as a sport here at the Clem Jones Youth Centre.
As a one off promotion Se7en have made 200 vouchers available for only $5 at the canteen at the stadium. All proceeds will go to the junior program enabling some less advantaged children within the community to play the sport.
The vouchers have an automatic worth of $7 plus an ongoing discount that means the more you eat the better the deal is.

Hello All,
BBI & SDBAL is proud to announce a joint venture program aimed at ensuring a pathway for our juniors as they move towards the senior ranks. In conjunction with SDBAL will be sending approximately five players per team (male & female U18 teams) to Victoria for the Dandenong Australia Day Carnival 2010. Players will be expected to train on the holiday break in preparation for this event (possibly 3 or 4 trainings sessions). This is our first time attending this tournament, if this is successful we would consider participating in this event or similar events each year.
Selection Process;
Southern Districts and Brisbane Basketball are sending an expression of interest to all players in their Premier League Teams. From your email responses a team will be selected. To keep cost to a minimum a decision would be required from you by the 8th October 2009.
If you are selected a $200 non-refundable deposit would need to be paid by the 16th October 2009. I envisage at this stage that the cost for this event would be approximately $850.00 per player. BBI are happy to donate a further $2000 to cover the costs of coaches, score bench and mangers. Should you be selected in a State Team, Murry Aldred has informed me he would be happy to release you from any State Commitment to attend this event. This would be confirmed once State Coaches are appointed and their training calendars finalised.

Referee Appointment

5 October 2009
SEABL APPOINT NEW REFEREE COMMISSIONER
SEABL is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Aylen to the position of Referee Commissioner. Michael has a rich basketball background after being involved in the sport for over 30 years in many different capacities including player, referee and administrator.
Michael currently works with the AFL as Umpires and Officials Welfare & Development Manager as well as a referee in the National Basketball League in which he has officiated 329 games so far.
Aylen has refereed at the highest level on numerous occasions, working at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, 2006 Men’s World Championships and has been awarded NBL Referee of the Year on two occasions. His knowledge of the game and international experience will be a great benefit to all referees and referee coaches in the league.
Thrilled to be given the opportunity to be involved with SEABL once again, Michael is looking forward to the exciting opportunities and challenges ahead.
“The reason I applied for the job was I thought it was time to give something back to the sport that has been a massive part of my life. I took on a mentoring role in season 2009 and I have really enjoyed the improvement I have seen in my mentee’s performances. I am passionate about seeing the standard of refereeing improve and I embrace the challenge of making the current group better,” said Aylen.
“The main focus will be to increase the coaching resources available to each referee and to each referee coach so that they can be better equipped to deal with the demands of a league that is improving every season.”
Outgoing Referee Commissioner Neil Bradbury retired in August after many successful years in the job. Aylen said that Bradbury has been a mentor for him since he started as a referee at Nunawading in 1983. “I thought personally I’d like to continue the great work he did for the SEABL and follow in his footsteps. Neil did an amazing job during his 20 year tenure. Hopefully I can continue that and build on the position he left the panel in by stamping my own vision / philosophy onto the group in a manner that mirrors the dedication he showed whilst in the role.” Aylen said.
SEABL General Manager, Mark Chivers was extremely happy that the League was able to fill the position with such an outstanding individual who has a lot of experience as well as having a sound basketball background.
“Michael’s domestic, national and international experience will be a huge asset in maintaining and developing the pathway’s for the SEABL Referee Panel,” said Chivers.

Palmer departs the Spartans
In a shock announcement yesterday Head Coach of the Brisbane Spartans , Bruce Palmer, advised that he will not be staying with the Spartans in the South East Australian Basketball League in 2010, preferring to move to the Knox Raiders where he will be involved in the development of the sport from juniors to seniors.
“This is a major blow to our program as Bruce has been great for us” offered General Manager, Allan Ladewig. “The problem for us is that we are a minnow in the sport of basketball compared to a Victorian power such as Knox. We wish Bruce every success. The team he leaves behind will be basically the same for 2010 and the base of juniors coming through is sound”.
Palmer in an interview stated “I want to thank Southern District Spartans for the vision and commitment to the best interests of elite players in South East Queensland through the bold move of joining the SEABL in 2007. Sadly, Basketball Queensland has to this time failed to support the Spartans effort to provide the SEABL competition as an elite pathway for our players development”.
“I have been honoured with the opportunity of coaching the Spartans Men in the 2007 and 2009 SEABL seasons and exceptionally proud of the achievements of the Spartans Men and Women programs in bringing deserved praise onto the Spartans from fellow interstate SEABL competitors”.
“While saddened to not continue with the Spartans, I am confident they will continue to provide exceptional player development through participation in SEABL and hope Basketball Queensland recognise’s and supports the Spartans and future Queensland Associations who seek alternative competition as part of their player, coach, referee and officials elite pathway”.
“I look forward to the challenge ahead in the Basketball Operations Manager and Director of Senior Coaching with Knox Basketball Inc. My heartfelt thanks to all the players, coaches and administrators that I have had the good fortune of serving with here in Queensland”.
Not to be seen as sitting on their hands the management of the Brisbane Spartans are moving quickly to replace Palmer with this years assistant coach Rodger Smith.
Smith, a former star with the Brisbane Bullets has the respect and knowledge to lead the Spartans and has been highly recommended by Palmer.
“While we want to fill the spot quickly we will follow our established formal process and ensure that next years team reflects our associations long term commitment, to producing local players” Charles Ellis, President offered.
The Spartans start pre-season trainings in two weeks with players from all over south east Queensland being invited to work under former Brisbane Bullets assistant coach, Peter Pendle in preparation for the 2010 SEABL season.

Basketball Australia Chief Executive Officer Larry Sengstock will tomorrow (Tuesday 13 October) announce the outcome of BA's comprehensive review of the timing of the National Basketball League and Women’s National Basketball League season timings at its corporate offices in Sydney.

Sengstock will brief media on the outcome of the review, and reveal the future positioning in the calendar of the NBL and WNBL seasons. The BA chief will also provide an update on the progress of the introduction of a new national development league which forms part of the national pathway to the NBL and WNBL.
Sengstock will be available for media one-on-one interviews following the briefing.
Media wishing to attend should contact Marc Howard at the Basketball Australia offices on the number below to confirm their participation. Parking is available on site by prior arrangement.

Who: Larry Sengstock (Basketball Australia Chief Executive Officer)
When: Tuesday 13 October – 11:00am

From media release issued by BA looks like they are trying not to tell people the hard facts. A one liner about the second tier at end media release suggests nothing decided when report was presented to last BA Board meeting. Me thinks BA are trying to sooth some egos.

MEDIA RELEASE
Only one week after signing former Brisbane Bullet, Rodger Smith, as the head coach for the 2010 South East Australian season the Spartans have cleaned up with the signing of local legend, Scott Lloyd as the assistant coach.
Lloyd who played all his junior basketball at Southern Districts has been one of the greatest players in Queensland Basketball until his recent retirement.
As a junior he captained the first ever Spartans under 18 boys team to a State Championship, that had such greats as Shane Nancarrow and Damien Anderson in the team.
Throughout his senior years he was named to numerous Queensland Basketball “All Star Teams”, winning playing awards over his fourteen year senior playing career. He also was a member of several teams that won the State Championship.
“Scott’s knowledge and experience will go a long way to assisting us as we start to make the transition in returning to a local player focus with some promising juniors coming through to the senior ranks. He coached the under 18 boys team which won second division this year in Toowoomba and is heavily involved in our new junior development programs” offered Allan Ladewig, General Manager, of Southern Districts.
Lloyd also was a member of the Brisbane Bullets in the great years prior to a back injury, which restricted his career. Not to let that stop him in his later years he has won many awards in coaching. Recently he was also involved in assisting the Gladstone State League program make take step up to semi-professionalism when he was a player coach with the men’s program and Head Coach of the women’s program.
“This is great for me” Lloyd stated. “I get to return to my junior club where my family and friends are still very active. My kids are here and the juniors have so much talent it is amazing. I always knew I would return and if the Saturday under eights and tens are the future then we at Spartans have a very bright future. I am looking forward to working with Rodger Smith as what he has forgotten more about basketball then most people will never learn. The team playing in the South East Australian Basketball Leagues is also a bonus as it is just a small step short of the National Basketball League and the club came so close last year to being the Champions”.
The Spartans will start training early December for the 2010 season with players being invited from the State League. Players interested in trying out should contact the office on 398 2790.

Flynn returns
27-11-09, 12:08
LIVING THE DREAM
An evening with Liam Flynn
The Southern Districts Basketball Association welcomes the basketball community to attend on Tuesday the 8th December a coaching forum headed by Liam Flynn at the Rowland Cowan Stadium in Carina.
Flynn who was a junior representative of the Spartans for many years elected to make coaching his pathway to the top and after doing the hard yards in the junior ranks has forged a career within basketball, currently an assistant coach with the Adelaide 36ers.
“When Liam called and offered to come back and do a coaching clinic for the Association I was over the moon.” offered Southern Districts General Manager, Allan Ladewig. “Liam always knew what he wanted to do and was willing to do what ever it took to get there. I remember his first number one team, which he took to an Australian Championship in under 14’s with an unknown player by the name of Reece Martin. Reece currently plays for Woollongong in the National Basketball League”.
Picked up by South Australia and offered a “State Director of Coaching” position Martin has done it all on the floor, recognised for being a players coach who works after everyone else has left.
“Returning to Queensland to play the Gold Coast Blaze on Wednesday night gave me the chance to put something back into the Spartans who I loved being part of” stated Flynn.
Southern Districts have elected to make this one off opportunity open to the greater basketball community. Flynn will do a short coaching session for those interested, where he will break down drills and plays, prior to making himself available for general questions from aspiring coaching staff and players.
“This is a great chance for young basketballer’s to hear what they must be willing to do to get to the top of the sport and we are grateful to Liam for giving up his most valuable time’ Charles Ellis. President, offered.
The session starts at 7pm sharp with Southern Districts asking those wanting to attend to contact the office on 3398 2790 so it can be correctly catered for.

New Program
08-12-09, 14:46
Guys
On Tuesday the 15th December at 6pm Stephanie Onn wil be going through the new registration/scoring system for clubs, schools and other interested persons.
This is the way of the future and if you want to be part of it make sure your club/school has a respresentative in attendance.
Find out how this new system will save your volunteers hours of work and ensure all your players are fully paid up at club, association and state level. Let the Association start doing the work that wears so many valuable volunteers down. All you need do is learn how to use the system to your clubs advantage.
This is also where you will find out how the system will improve player satisfaction with access to statistics through our website. Every player who regsiters an email address will be able to access stas after game is finished. Just think about it a socail competition that has leading point scorers, biggest foul count and a whole lot more by the end of the year.
This is also where your club may be able to raise funds through sponsorship promotions within the system.
This attending must advise Allan on sdbal@bigpond.net.au so we can cater for numbers.
Lets all make 2010 the best ever and start living in the new world.

Merry Xmas
15-12-09, 15:57
To all members and guests have a great Xmas break and we look forward to seeing you all in 2010. Thanks you to all who have worked so hard in 2009 to make our sport a better product.
Stadium closes 12 noon sharp Friday 18th and re-opens Monday 11th January.
So no one is confused if your team has arranged entry with the office in this time you are booked in. No other entry will be allowed due to the floors being re-surfaced.
If you do not have your nomination in then I suggest you get in quick as the new data base does not allow for changes to draw once issued.
Again have a great break.
New Age for sport
11-01-10, 15:23
MODERN AGE COMES TO BASKETBALL
The Southern Districts Basketball Association starts the new year with an edge on all its competitors when it becomes Queensland’s first paperless basketball stadium.
New score boards, on very court, which can advertise sponsors and a scoring system where young and social players can access statistics on any game played at the Rowland Cowan Stadium at the Clem Jones Youth Centre in Carina.
“We set out at the start of last year to improve two main objectives within our Associations” offered General Manager, Allan Ladewig.
“The first was the pathway for our juniors players as they aspired to play at the highest level. We achieved that through the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans who won the National SEABL final and with the Arrow caravan & Towbar Spartans who finished second also in the South East Australian Basketball League.’
“We have very similar, if not improved senior teams for this years competition and through the work of both SEABL head coaches, Donna and Rodger, a much greater commitment to the junior pathway. This year will see more players then ever before given the ability to play in a national competition. Even our under 23 squads will be competing in a Victorian junior competition in March”.
“On the operational side we felt that members needed more then just to be able to turn up and play and then wait a week before seeing results on the boards”.
“The new system is all about new age with touch screens replacing the old score sheets with the score board flashing the person fouled or whoever scored last. At the end of the game once signed off by the referees the results will be immediately available on line. All a member need do is register an email address and they will have access.”
“The new scoring system will also take a huge workload off our most valuable club volunteers who can now arrange for the Association to collect fees. The data base will not allow any player to play unregistered, which I am sure will make Basketball Queensland happy to know that everyone is registered”.
The seniors have already commenced the new season but for parents looking to get their child playing the junior sign up is on Saturday 30th January from 8am till 12 noon at the Clem Jones Youth Centre. Seniors looking for games should contact the stadium on 3398 2790 as teams are always looking for players.
The Southern Districts Basketball Association caters for both boys and girls from age 5 through to masters. The junior program recognised as the best in the south Queensland region where they have won the “Harold Peacock” trophy for the last two years.
In the seniors players can compete at whatever level best suits both standard and life style from Monday through to Thursday nights. The Association is also the only Queensland that competes in what is recognised as “Australia’s Premier Winter basketball competition” the South East Australian Basketball League where they play against teams from Hobart through to Mt Gambier including Canberra and the power house Victorian teams such as Geelong, Know and Dandenong.
Basketball is a great family sport that is allows everyone to be involved no matter what level they want to compete at.

Veal A Lady Spartan
03-02-10, 14:39
Kristen Veal joins Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans
Things could not be going any better at the Clem Jones Youth Centre in Carina, where the SEABL Women’s Championship team the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans have been busy in the off season preparing to defend the 2009 National Championship.
The signing of Women’s National League Logan Thunder star Kristen Veal is a huge bonus to a fairy tale 2009 season which saw the Carina Leagues Club Brisbane Lady Spartans finish first in the National competition.
“Kristen is a great leader and Carina Leagues Club Brisbane Lady Spartan” offered Head Coach Donna Rinaldi. “Her leadership extends beyond game-time and can be seen on and off the court as well. Her expertise and relaxed approach will help guide the younger players in performing above their experience. I am so glad we were able to attract her to the program”.
A former WNBA player with the Phoenix Mercury, Kristen was the youngest player to play in that league. In the 2003/04 season, she was named a WNBL Ambassador and was a member of the WNBL All-Star Five. Originally an AIS player, Kristen averaged 8.6 points and 3.6 assists for the 2006/07 season.
“We really wanted someone who had the same community based commitments as we did and Kristen was everything we were looking for” said General Manager, Allan Ladewig. “She plays hard and never ever gives in. She wants to work within our junior program and will be a great asset to that program. Young female athletes who aspire to be the best can now watch one of the best in the business on a weekly basis”.
“The recruitment of Kristen to our community was made possible by the support of many and especially the Carina Leagues Club who do so much for local sporting and social groups” Ladewig added.
“I wanted to stay in Queensland, and when Southern Districts contacted me to play it was like the stars aligning. I wanted to play in the SEABL competition and stay in Queensland where I am fulfilling my new career path. I am looking forward to being part of the team.” offered Kristen.
The Carina Leagues Club Brisbane Lady Spartans commenced training four weeks ago in preparation for SEABL which kicks off in March 2010. Season tickets and sponsorship packages are available now.

Australian Opal, Emma Randall, this week, committed to re-sign with the Carina Leagues Club Brisbane Lady Spartans, on her return from playing in Europe. Randall had made it clear to everyone prior to her departure, at seasons end. that she wanted to return to defend the SEABL Women’s Crown.
“Randall is the perfect fit for us. She understands her role within the team and inspires the younger team members. Emma was a key player last season and she helped our women’s team improve so much that we were confident of causing the upset in the grand final” offered Head Coach, Donna Rinaldi. “The combination of Randall and our newest signing WNBL Logan Thunder Captain Kristen Veal will be a powerful combination”.
The re-signing of Randall was only made possible by the support of many and especially the Carina Leagues Club who do so much for local sporting and social groups” General Manager Allan Ladewig added.
“I have been playing in Europe and I was keen to return to Queensland and take up my role again with the Lady Spartans. They are a quality outfit that is well managed. I really enjoyed my time there and the championship success of 2009” said Randall.
The Carina Leagues Club Brisbane Lady Spartans are looking to remain one of Queensland’s most successful women’s sporting programs through the signing of Randall. After dominating the Queensland State Basketball League for over a decade, prior to making the successful jump to the South East Australian Basketball League three years ago the Lady Spartans are becoming one of the power houses of Australian women’s sport.
Southern Districts President, Charles Ellis when speaking at a recent meeting said “We are proud of what we are doing here at Southern Districts, at the Clem Jones Youth Centre. Both the men and women’s programs compete against the likes of Victorian powerhouse the Knox Raiders who have over 14,000 members and still we find a way to win”.
“It is really a great sign of respect by others that the likes of Knox have recruited three players for the 2010 season from our program. On a positive note it is great for our sport that so many of our juniors are being exposed and encouraged to move to the likes of Knox as they see a pathway to the NBL and WNBL”.
The South East Australian Basketball League will kick off in March 2010. Season tickets and VIP sponsorship packages are still available.

MEDIA RELEASE
The Southern Districts Basketball Association is proud to announce a new partnership/ sponsorship with Rebels Sports at Carindale.
“The new arrangement ensures that the members get a great deal every time they shop there and we get another local business involved in supporting our junior program” offered Allan Ladewig, General Manager of Southern Districts.
The junior program at Southern Districts has been undergoing some huge changes in direction with former Bullet assistant coach, Peter Pendle and the legendary Leroy Loggins becoming involved in 2010. Programs are starting to be rolled out that will allow every member access to the skills and knowledge they need to enjoy the sport at the level they are comfortable with.
“The new revamped Friday junior competition is full and we are now unable to house the number of teams wanting to play here” Ladewig added. “Saturday continues to also grow from the youngest (under 8’s) up with what we expect to be a full house come the main season in April”.
The partnership with the Carindale Rebel Sports store is another sign that the local major brand businesses are recognising the importance of forming local relationship with junior sports. SDBAL make sure what they promise the sponsor they deliver and it is proving very successful for all involved.
The Lady Spartans and Spartans, as the senior programs are recognised, have attracted over the last few years major companies, Coca Cola Amatil, IGA, Nestle Peters, Crazy Johns not to mention the Carina Leagues Club which plays a huge role in the local community not to mention Branches Lifestyle, Rode Road Pool Services, Northern Lifestyle Floors, Intensity Sportswear, Coochie Hydrogreen, Davies Knox Maynards and major sponsors Arrow Caravan & Towbars.

MEDIA RELEASE

CANNAN & RIGBY NAMED AUSTRALIAN CO-CAPTAIN
Ash Cannan and Cam Rigby have been voted by their team mates to co-captain the Australian Team in the upcoming two game series against Qatar. Head Coach Bruce Palmer announced the appointment after the team’s second practice session together on Saturday morning.
“It was an absolute honour to make the team, but to be selected by my peers to captain the team is just amazing” said Ash Cannan
Cannan has been working hard since mid January to have his body ready for the tough international series. All 11 players are currently in a pre season phase with their SEABL club but have put in the extra hours on the training track to be ready for the two game trip.
Rigby was injured during the try-outs for the team, and has worked to make sure his body is injury free and ready for the rigors of two tough international games. Cam has been visiting a Chiropractor and having Personal Training sessions daily to strengthen his back.
Rigby is an experienced player with NBL experience and has a strong performance history in the SEABL, having one numerous SEABL Championships. Cannan was an All SEABL East Men team member in 2009, helping guide his Brisbane Spartans to the Minor Premiership.
Knox Raiders forward Cam Rigby said “Its not every day you get to represent your country, but to be able to tell my family and friends I captained the team, is something I will always cherish”.
Both players were surprised with the selection, but are determined to lead the team to victory.
The Australian team arrived in Qatar on Friday morning and have had three tough training sessions to date.
“The sessions so far have been tough and demanding, but Coach Palmer is keen to have us boys in shape for our first game on Monday night”, said Cam Rigby.
One of the major goals of the first few training sessions is to see the team gel together as they had never played together as a team until arriving in Qatar. The players have been working hard at developing a game plan that will trouble the Qatar National Team.
The Australian SEABL select team play game one 6pm on Monday night (2am Tuesday 23rd Australian EST).

SPARTANS LAUNCH
The Carina Leagues Club was the place to be on Wednesday night as the 2010 South East Australian Basketball League tipped off for the city of Brisbane.
New logo’s, new uniforms, players and some changes in coaching staff ensured the packed room had a lot to listen for as host, Graeme Harding, interviewed players and sponsors alike.
This year the honour of launching the season went to Councillor John Campbell, a long time supporter of the local sporting community.
Attended by representatives of the National Basketball League and the Women’s National Basketball League amongst over 150 invited guests there was standing room only.
Following on from last season, where the Arrow Caravan & Towbar Spartans finished minor premiers and the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans won the National Championship the Southern Districts Basketball Association, based at the Clem Jones Youth Centre in Carina President, Charles Ellis, left no one wondering what this years goals were.
“With Donna again at the helm and Rodger Smith taking over from Bruce we feel this year could be even better then last years. We were so proud of the Lady Spartans and all we need now is for the men to go that one game better.”
“In 2010, while we have lost some players and a coach, we are more then happy to announce the recruitment of Kristen Veal for the Lady Spartans and with our own Australian Boomer in the house, Adam Gibson we feel we are a much better club”.
The Spartans men hit the road this week against Dandenong and Nunawading with the Lady Spartans kicking off in late March.
First home game for both teams on Saturday April 17th when they host arch rivals Knox Raiders from Victoria.

Spartans Double
Spartans Open 2010 Campaign in Style
The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Brisbane Spartans have opened their 2010 South East Australian Basketball League campaign in fine style with two road wins against powerhouse Victorian Clubs the Dandenong Rangers and the Nunawading Spectres over the weekend.
On Saturday night, the new look Spartans team, under former Brisbane Bullet legend, Rodger Smith, defeated the Rangers 97 – 89 with National Basketball League superstar, Adam Gibson leading the way with 26 points and 10 assists. He was backed up well by home town favourite, big man Greg Vanderjagt, with 24 points and 12 rebounds with the captain, Ash Cannan proving he will again be a power in the league with 21 points and 14 rebounds.
The Spartans enjoyed a slender 6-point lead at the first break but the Rangers pulled back to lock the scores at 46 a piece at the main break. It was a tight affair in the second half with the Spartans just having the edge at the final buzzer.
The following afternoon the Spartans travelled to Nunawading, a team that also boasts numerous former and current NBL players lead by Melbourne Tigers Tommy Greer and former Singapore Slingers players Chris Cameron and Shane Mc Donald.
However, it was the class of point guard Adam Gibson that once again shone through to lead the Spartans to a nail biting 3-point win, 69 – 66 with 24 points and 6 rebounds with Ash Cannan once again, consistent with 19 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
Former Spartans junior Alex Cox returned with a solid weekend with a combined 15 points, 9 assists in 42 minutes of playing time over the two games. Spartans head coach, Rodger Smith, returned to playing action with 19 minutes of court time over the weekend.
“I am over the moon with the weekend’s results,” Smith said. “It’s always tougher to win on the road and these wins will certainly count for something towards the business end of the season.”
“With our first six games on the road, these two were exceptionally important to get, so I’m very happy with the boys,” he concluded.
With the two road wins, the Spartans have already sent the warning signs out, and with Perth Wildcat NBL Championship winner Drew Williamson still to be added to the puzzle, the Spartans will only go from strength to strength.
Southern Districts compete in what is considered Australia’s “Premier Winter Basketball League:” the South East Australian Basketball Leagues against teams from Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria and the ACT. They are Queensland’s only team within the competition and are considered to be holding the fort, at senior level, as far as basketball goes while Brisbane waits for the return to the NBL through the Brisbane Bullets.
The Southern Districts Basketball Association is also home to the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans who are currently the SEABL National Champions after defeating the Knox Raiders in 2009.
On the junior front the young Spartans are also proving very successful by having eight of a possible 14 teams contesting the Queensland South Junior Grand Finals this Saturday at Auchenflower.
“We are so proud of what the club has accomplished over the week-end” stated Charles Ellis, President. “Our junior volunteers and coaching staff have worked so hard to make this possible and with the new programs that we open up after Easter it will only get stronger and better. Thanks to all those people behind the scenes’.
The Arrow Caravan & Towbar Spartans will enjoy this weekend off before hitting the road once again to Canberra and Kilsyth the following weekend. First home game for the Spartans and Lady Spartans is Saturday the 17th April with reserved seating now available from the office.

Carnival Success
29-03-10, 13:31
Multicultural Carnival Great Success
In what can only be described as a huge success the organisers of the Carina Multicultural Carnival are already planning for next year.
“We had over 2500 people through the doors of the stadium over the week-end and the music and dance was outstanding” offered one of the event assistants, Allan Ladewig.
“I came to work on Saturday morning but ended up staying for the entire week-end it was so good. On Sunday afternoon it was great to watch over 30 children, along side and with adult entertainers, from all cultures, dancing on the floor to the music’.
The first time event, co-ordinated by the Clem Jones Youth Centre and the Southern Districts Basketball Association, saw cultural stalls and foods from many countries on sale while the public was entertained by music and dance form all over the world. A great hit with everyone was an Irish jig performed live.
The event held inside the Rowland Cowan Stadium at the Clem Jones Youth Centre is focused on bringing the community together as one in song and dance.
Local politicians, business and community groups have been working together as one over the last three months to get the Carnival off the ground and if the smiles on the faces of those who turned up are a guideline for success it will be a “must attend event” in future years.

BOOMERS TO PLAY BEFORE ANTICIPATED TV AUDIENCE OF ONE BILLION
The Golden Star Boomers, Australia’s men’s national basketball team, will head into their second major training camp this weekend buoyed by the news that the television audience for the upcoming 2010 World Championship for Men is expected to reach a staggering one billion people.
FIBA Secretary General and International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Patrick Baumann confirmed recently that the tournament, which will be held in Turkey from 28 August to 12 September, was on track to reach a massive global audience.
“Right now more than 180 countries will broadcast the games and that number will reach 200 before the event,” said Mr. Baumann. “In 2006, our accumulated TV audiences figure was 800 million viewers and we expect to go over one billion this year.”
Mr. Baumann said that FIBA had made a major investment in the world championships to ensure their success.
“A record of $100 million has been invested in this tournament,” he said. “Also, our world-renowned partners and sponsors mirror their support of this great event by accounting for an additional $30 million.”
The Secretary General of the Turkish Basketball Federation who will host the event, Mr. Ali Özsoy said international media interest in the event was also at record levels.
“As expected, media interest in the tournament is setting new records,” said Mr. Özsoy. “Currently we have 1,900 accredited media members from over 75 countries and we expect to have over 2,500.
“For the first time in Turkey’s history, we will have fan zones and we anticipate a daily turnout of 50,000 people at the zones in the four host cities (Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir and Kayseri).”
The FIBA World Championship will be broadcast in full high-definition production for the first time. All games will be live on www.FIBAtv.com with English language commentary.
The event’s website www.turkey2010.fiba.com will be available in four languages (English,
Spanish, Turkish and Chinese) and is expected to have over 20 million unique visitors (twice as many as 2006).
Basketball Australia Chief Executive Officer Larry Sengstock said the global nature of the sport of basketball meant that the Boomers and Australian basketball would enjoy massive international exposure during the tournament.
“FIBA is made up of 213 national basketball federations worldwide, so for Australia to qualify amongst the top 24 teams to qualify is in itself a massive feat,” said Mr. Sengstock. “That’s the beauty of our sport and the fact that over 450 million people play basketball on competition and grassroots level around the world. Our teams get to play on a truly global stage and that is fantastic exposure for us.”
The Boomers start their second major training camp in preparation for the world titles on the Gold Coast this Sunday.

Lloyd to lead
01-11-10, 12:25
LLOYD RETURNS TO LEAD THE LADY SPARTANS
As one of the original Spartan juniors, competing on the outdoor courts at the QEII stadium in 1982, Scott Lloyd, has seen both the lean and great years as part of Queensland’s most successful junior and senior basketball program.
“I used to watch the seniors play and want to be just like them. When the Association moved to our own courts at the Clem Jones Youth Centre, in Carina, I always thought my family moved to the area just so I could play for the Spartans one day”.
Lloyd started his life time passion for the sport of basketball at the age of seven, playing in the under 14 age group. An outstanding junior he played in every age group within the juniors ranks captaining the Spartans under 18 boys team to a State Championship.
Recognised for his fierce defensive skills with a never say die attitude he also represented Queensland in the under 18 and 20 age groups before being selected to train with the Spartans. He went on to play at the highest level for 14 years throughout Queensland prior to electing to return to Carina where his children now play on Saturday mornings.
After achieving his child hood ambition by becoming one of the youngest players ever to wear the Spartan uniform, Lloyd was picked up by the Brisbane Bullets in 1993. A back injury sustained in this period seriously hampering his basketball career.
“My back has always been an issue for me, but in other ways it has opened up opportunities that otherwise I may not have considered. I first coached a women’s team at Runcorn the I moved to Gladstone working with another former Spartan legend, Blair Smith. The women play a much tighter and disciplined game to the men”.
“Last year I was Rodger Smith’s assistant coach for the Spartans men’s program and loved it but when the chance arose to do the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans team I jumped at the chance. The team is legendary in basketball circles in Queensland and Australia. They have more championship banners hanging from the rafters, per seasons played, than any other team in Australia. They are the bench mark for women’s team sports in Queensland”.
Lloyd was offered the position after Donna Rinaldi advised the Association she wanted to return to her junior program in Ballarat, Victoria.
General manager, Allan Ladewig, was quoted as saying “Donna is going to be a hard act to follow. She coached the girls to the South East Australian Championship in 2009 and was a player under the great Trish Cochrem when we won the National Championship in 1999. When Donna advised she wanted to return to Ballarat we had no choice but to accept it and she leaves with our many thanks for such great effort over so many years”.
Lloyd takes up the reins from December first and is expected to push fitness as a major part of pre-season with all eligible junior and senior players welcome to try out.
“I believe we as a club need to be competitive but we also need to remember what we did to become the elite program we are. I will be pushing for us to use our own juniors but I have to be honest, some of the applications from outstanding players at other Associations, I have seen on the General Managers desk, can only help us be the best we can. I am very keen to see Kristen Veal and Emma Randall return to the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans and I am so looking forward to coaching Rebecca Shatz as she has had this season out through injury” Lloyd offered.
“I will also be talking to the others in this years group as well as they are a quality squad and we really do need to keep the likes of Smith, Pryor, Jeffress, Currie and Kate Willey at the club”.
Returning to the squad, after a season out, are fan favourites, Shona O’Bree and Rebecca Stephens, two of the greats of Lady Spartans junior and senior basketball programs.

Southern Districts sign Basketball Queensland Coach Of The Year
The Southern Districts Basketball Association today announced that they had signed Leonard King to coach the Arrow Caravan & Towbar Spartans for the next two years.
No stone had been left unturned as the Southern Districts Spartans had been searching for a new Head Coach to head the South East Australian Basketball League 2011 and 2012 campaign after the resignation of Rodger Smith.
“We were really sorry to let Rodger go but after we after talked to Coach King we are positive we are headed into the new era with a great, on and off court, leader” offered general manager, Allan Ladewig.
Originally, from Cleveland Heights Ohio; Leonard attended Cleveland Heights High School and then accepted a four year athletic scholarship at Florida A&M University. At Florida A&M he was named to the all conference team twice. His senior year he was a pre season All American honourable mention and finished the year ranked 20th in scoring in the nation with 22 points per game.
After completing his Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Physical Education he decided to play professional basketball abroad. He played professionally overseas from 1990 – 1997 Portugal, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and New Zealand.
2004 – 2007 Leonard worked for Basketball New Zealand as the National High Performance Head Coach where he was charged with the identification, recruitment and development of the elite junior players aged from 14 – 20 years old. The High Performance program was to ensure that New Zealand had talented junior players coming through the development pathways which lead through to The New Zealand Senior Men’s and Women’s National team. A large part of this role was placing their most talented players in US colleges after they completed High School. Leonard was instrumental in starting a large developmental camp called the All New Zealand Camp, which targeted the top 90 junior athletes in the country and invited them to a weeklong camp. In which he was the director of this camp for the first 2 years.
He was also an Assistant Coach with the Men’s Senior National team “The Tall Blacks” and his duties included video analysis, scouting, on court coaching and player development. During his time with the Tall Blacks the team won Gold at the Stankovic Cup held in China in 2005, and they finished second in the 2005 Oceania championship qualifiers.
From 2007 – 2010 Coach King helped turn the Mackay Meteors in the Queensland Basketball League (QBL) team around leading them to 2 consecutive finals appearances for the first time in the clubs 25 year history. The Meteors went undefeated at home during the 2010 QBL season and finished runner up in the Grand Final game. Coach King has been awarded the prestigious QBL Coach of the Year award for the past 2 season, (2009, 2010).
The Spartans finished fourth last year and have the highest win lose ratio in the South East Australian basketball league, despite never actually winning the championship.
President, Charles Ellis, in signing King stated “We wanted someone that was willing to build from the bottom. We have some great players in Cannan, Vanderjagt and Edmonds and some real talent coming through. Coach King proved he is about setting goals and working towards them and we see his objectives very much in line with ours”.
King who will move to Brisbane in December has his work cut out as the Spartans look to start a four year plan to win the National championship by 2014.
“I will be talking to the current team members and also some others players as we set our sights on building a basketball program in Brisbane that will be able to support and enhance the new Brisbane Bullets and also the Gold Coast Blaze NBL teams. I am also very keen to work with the many talented juniors that the club has. The likes of Josh Derksen, Cade Towers and James Griffin are just three I know can play at the highest level if they apply themselves” stated Coach King. “I will be implementing an up-tempo style offense with full court pressure defence, The Spartans are renowned for their strong work ethic and family atmosphere and I look forward to joining a club with a rich and proud history”.

We are seeking applications from persons interested in being involved as a coach, manager and playing capacity.

This is a one off opportunity being opened up.
Applications must be sent to sdbal@bigpond.net.au to be considered. All applicatios treated in the strictest confdence.

GROVES A SPARTAN
Former NBL great Cortez Groves has signed for the Arrow Caravan & Towbar Spartans for season 2011 of the South East Australian Basketball League.
Groves who has previously played with Wollongong, Victoria and Adelaide in the National Basketball League joins the likes of former Australian Boomer squad member, big man Greg Vanderjagt and Ash Cannan, a former Australian SEABL Captain and NBL star, in what is shaping up to be a basic NBL squad at the Clem Jones Centre in Carina.
“With no NBL team in Brisbane it is important that we make every effort to ensure our local players have somewhere to aim for” offered Spartans General Manager, Allan Ladewig.
“Cortez will be an important part of us attracting back basketball fans and sponsors to our sport. We all know he can shoot and with our sights set on being the first Queensland men’s team to win the SEABL Championship Cortez gives us some fire power lacking in past seasons. The Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans have already won both the SEABL and National ABA Championship”.
Ladewig went on to add. “We still have another important part of the team to add but until the NBL season is over we are allowed to name them”.
Not to be out done the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans also proudly announced that Renae Camino will join them after playing for Logan in the Women’s National Basketball League.
This year the Spartans do not play at home until the 7th May when they take on Victorian powerhouse the Knox Raiders.

Basketball back Brisbane

Basketball Back in Brisbane
It was standing room only, on Wednesday night at the Carina Leagues Club, at the launch of the Spartans and the Lady Spartans, as basketball returned to Brisbane at a national level, through the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL).
Southern Districts Basketball Association, a member club of the Clem Jones Youth Centre is the driving force in keeping basketball alive in Brisbane at senior level since the demise of the Brisbane Bullets.
After dominating the sport within Queensland for nearly fifteen years, the Spartans, elected in 2007 to move to the SEABL, dominated by Victorian and Tasmanian clubs, where they have continued to make a pathway for young Queensland athletes through to the National Basketball League and the Women’s National League.
In 2009 the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans won the SEABL Championship with the men finishing first in the Northern Conference before losing to Victorian powerhouse the Knox Raiders in the grand final.
At the launch, politicians from all sides joined in support with local business and supporters, when it was proudly stated that “both teams would win the National Championship within four years’ by Allan Ladewig, the general manager of the club.
In the off season the Spartan men’s team have recruited former NBL star Cortez Groves, while retaining Australian SEABL captain Ash Cannan and another former NBL star in Greg Vanderjagt while focusing on getting local juniors involved.
New Head Coach, Leonard King, also joins the program after being the Queensland Basketball Leagues Coach of Year for the past two years.
The Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans have also recruited well in the off season picking up New Zealand International Kate McKeeken-Ruscoe and former Australian junior Renae Camino. Former Spartan player Scott Lloyd takes charge of the team, where his focus is on development of the junior players from the Association.
Southern Districts Basketball Association will have no less then 26 home grown juniors competing it the SEABL program this year with others divided up in teams around the country as well as in the National Basketball League.
Basketball is back and looks like it has a plan to stay.

Rumours rife
05-04-11, 14:32
Spartans set to announce newest signing. Player major contributor to sport in Australia as a show piece.
“HOMICIDE” AT SPARTANS
Basketball in Brisbane took a major step forward today with the signing of one of the National Basketball Leagues best players in Corey “Homicide” Williams to the Brisbane Spartans.
To those not familiar with the basketball scene in Brisbane the Spartans are based at the Clem Jones Youth centre at Carina and compete in the South East Australian Basketball League, playing against some of Australia’s biggest clubs.
Since the demise of the Bullets they have been flying the flag for the Brisbane basketball community, throughout Australia, in both the men’s and women’s competitions, on one of the smallest budgets within the league.
“It has been hard but we are proud of what we have done in making a pathway for our juniors, both male and female, to be recognised and recruited to Australian junior teams and the National Basketball Leagues” offered Spartans General Manager, Allan Ladewig.
“We have had great support from the Carina Leagues Club and Arrow Caravan & Towbars in getting the teams on the floor and given the fact that since we have joined the competition we are one of the most successful clubs is testament to what our members and supporters are about”.
Williams joins Cortez Groves, another former NBL star, along with former Boomer squad member Greg Vanderjagt and SEABL Alllstar Ash Cannan, under the direction of Queensland Male Coach Year, Leonard King, and no less then 26 locals within the Spartan programs.
A standout performer with the Townsville Crocs in 2010 Williams has just finished a spectacular season with the Melbourne Tigers where he assisted in turning round the season after joining the team late.
The Spartans travel away this week-end to Mt Gambier before playing in Melbourne and will be without Williams until the after Easter due to immigration requirements.
Brisbane fans will have to wait until May 7th before they get to see Williams play. The Brisbane Spartans will be playing the Knox Raiders in both men and women in what is fast becoming a huge inter-state rivalry.

MEDIA RELEASE
Spartans and Gold Coast Blaze join forces to foster young talent
The Gold Coast Blaze and the Southern Districts Basketball Association which competes as the Brisbane Spartans, have joined forces to create a greater development pathway for young basketball players in South East Queensland (SEQ).
Competing in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL), Southern Districts Basketball Association has long provided a stepping stone into the National Basketball League, namely helping to kick-start the career of Blaze favourite Chris Goulding. Other current NBL players Rhys Martin (Woollongong and Boomers squad), Cameron Tragardh (Melbourne Tigers) and Tim Coenraad (Woollongong) also came through the Spartans junior ranks.
The partnership, set out for five years, will seek to officially formalise this role for the Spartans, who will act as a feeder-club for the Gold Coast Blaze, currently the only NBL team in South East Queensland.
Successful, in both the NRL and AFL, the feeder-club system will work to not only put a spotlight on young talent, but also to encourage juniors to see the transition through the Spartans and SEABL into the NBL as a realistic and achievable goal in the SEQ region.
Juniors will additionally be exposed to NBL standards of play, with the partnership also detailing that at least three Blaze players are to suit up for the Spartans in the SEABL during the NBL off-season.
Blaze CEO Paul Pamenter and Spartans’ General Manager, Allan Ladewig were both excited about the partnership and the unveiling of local talent.
“This is a unique partnership that opens up a seamless opportunity for young talent to reach the top tier of basketball in this country, whilst at the same time, positioning us to hopefully add silverware to both the Blaze and Spartans’ trophy cabinets,” Pamenter said.
Whilst Ladewig added, “For so long we have been committed to becoming part of the true pathway for basketball. The partnership with the Blaze gives young players and the Spartans senior program that extra level to aspire towards. The Gold Coast Blaze are a quality organisation and we look forward to working with them for many years".

Thanks
To everyone who has contributed to the Associations success on behalf of the Committee I say a huge thank you. Without your efforts we would not be able to achieve what we do.
To our sponsors, thank you also. The way in which you have become involved is a clear message to everyone that our community is supported by the local business for the betterment of all. A special thankyou to the Carina Leagues Club who do so much for the entire local community.
The players in both the junior and senior ranks have again proven that we are moving in the right direction. That we now have one of the best pathways in Queensland for aspiring basketballers is a just reward to the likes of Steve Lennon, Greg Vanderjagt and Steve Edwards, just three of many dedicated people we have here at the Rowland Cowan Stadium at the Clem Jones Youth Centre.
This past year has seen the return of Tony Stephens, who is already making a difference in our programs development. It sadly, though, will see long time friends Carmella Monforte and perhaps our greatest ever female Lady Spartan to come through the ranks, Rebecca Stephens departing. To both ladies I say a big thank you for your dedication and friendship over many years.
All this is just part of what we do here at the Clem Jones Centre and one of this years greatest achievements is the establishment of Tertiary Place as part of our family under the eye of Mary McKenna. The program is just part of what Greg Vanderjagt, in his funded State Government position, within our community does. To the Hon Steve Kilburn if you can pass on our thanks to the Government we will be most grateful.
We must also this year welcome our friends from the Gold Coast Blaze who will over the next five years be playing a big part of the pathway for juniors from our representative program.
In closing I again thank all who have helped and welcome those just arriving to the “dark side”.

SDBAL the home of basketball in Queensland
Thoughts needed
27-10-11, 14:25
To All
I make known this is not to be seen in other way than what I feel is needed, which is a review of how we manage our representative junior competitions in South East Queensland. The BSQ out lived its use by date just as I believe the BQJBC has out lived its use by date.
I also stress that why SDBAL is allowing me the use of the office to write and send this out it is my thoughts only and people should not feel that the membership of SDBAL supports my position at this time. The senior executive, clubs and junior representative committee will all have input into what they decide as an Association and what they want changed, if anything.
The General Manager, Mr Graham Burns, of BQ has been cc’ed in on the details ensuring this is an up front start of what I hope becomes some realistic and logical debate on what we really want and/or need. No, it can not happen this season but after Easter 2012 the discussion must take place with an independent person running the meeting.
I write this letter out of frustration with the current way in which :-
1. BQ allows Associations to simply start without what I consider normal requirements. That is to ensure the new body is a long term prospect and also understands it role in development and education within. This included referees, administrators and players. They must also be able to prove the business will not impact of current Association within a 15 kilometre radius.
2. The BQJBC junior competitions has become a numbers game rather than an elite development competition. Please do not get me wrong with everyone should be allowed to play but the level needs to be tweaked. Associations should not be allowed in the current BQJBC competition in an age group unless they can prove they have a 4 team competition from where these teams are selected from.
In saying this I offer the following thoughts
1. The current BQJBC is just too large in its current format.
2. The calendar of BQ is crowded to say the least and for State program athletes even more so. A smaller competition will allow some space within the calendar.
3. Associations which nominate a team to the BQJBC need to have at least 4 teams playing in domestic competition. 6 teams for 2 BQJBC teams and at least 8 reams if they want three. Somewhere along the way it should not be simply used as a place to play. Associations not able to do this should be placed into a BQ competition where they also play like minded Associations. This will force Association to concentrate on local development rather than the BQJBC until such time as they have in place the base needed.
What I am proposing is a 7 or 8 team competition which one team from every Association in division one. The second teams in division 2 and so on. If a space exists, through someone not nominating a team then a simple challenge be conducted with best team in.
The competition will have a challenge round as exists now.
For Associations not able to comply with 4 team rule another competition to run at same time. This will enable BQ staff to better manage what happens.
I am sure there are a lot of other ideas which can be incorporated into a competition re-structure and no idea should be ruled out. I look forward to receiving as much feedback as possible from where I will endeavour to formulate a paper to present to BQ from where a gathering can be conducted and everything discussed.
