Thunder sign dual international
23.09.09
Most aspiring sportswomen, who prosper at more than one sport in their junior days, have to eventually decide on which sport they will pursue as a career.

Suzie Bates never got that memo.

The multi-talented 22-year-old has made a good living juggling between cricket and basketball, representing New Zealand in both the contrasting sports.

The 173cm guard has become the latest player to sign with Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) side, BDS Logan Thunder.

The dual international provides great depth to the side's guard stocks, which already has four-time champion and skipper, Kristen Veal, and last season's Rookie of the Year, Sarah Graham.

But it's Bates' experience on the big stage that excites Thunder coach, Richard Orlick the most.

“For such a young player to have the experience she has had in such a short space of time is quite remarkable,” he said.

“Suzie is coming here to enhance her sporting prowess.

“For the team, Suzie is going to give us a safety net in our guard rotation.

“She can take the pressure of some of the other players and at least I know we won't be relying on just one person to score or create every time this season.”

After representing New Zealand through the national age group teams, in 2007 Bates was elevated to the New Zealand Tall Ferns team.

She retained her spot for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, where she played alongside fellow Thunder player, Natalie Purcell.

Bates' reputation as a basketballer grew following a series of inspirational performances off the bench.

Her move to the Thunder has been viewed as an opportunity for the naturally gifted player to establish herself as a bone fide star in the WNBL.

“She could be anything she wants to be,” Orlick said.

“Suzie is naturally sporty and a gifted player.

“She did extremely well guarding Natalie Hurst (Australian Opals guard) at last month's Oceania Championships.”

Bates played one season in the WNBL in 2007/2008 for the now defunct Christchurch Sirens, but the decision by WNBL officials to no longer count New Zealanders as international players opened the door for Bates to sign with the Thunder.

With so much potential, only time will tell whether Bates is destined for bigger things in basketball, but as a cricketer, it's a totally different story.

Since earning her international stripes in 2006, Bates has built up one of the most formidable batting averages and strike rates in both the one day and twenty20 forms of the game.

Bates, who dwarfs most of her opponents on the cricket pitch, led New Zealand to silver at the 2009 Women's Cricket World Cup in March with a dominant display of powerful hitting, including a 168-run effort from just 105 balls against India.

She was rewarded with selection as opener of the World Cup XI team.

While it seems the willow will temporarily be put back into the kit bag, Orlick explained how Bates will have more than one purpose in his team this season.

“She'd be nice to have in your backyard cricket games,” he joked.

“Coach gets first pick right?”

Made the trip out to the new Logan WNBL training last night for teh launch. A few comments in no real oder.

1. the new big girl is huge 7 foot 2 inches
2. her sister is 6 foot 5 inches
3.. A lot of new recruits. 5 in all I think.
4. No BQ people in sight. Pretty sad really.
5. Great sponsor committing for 5 years at $300,000 a year I think. Something he said suggests may be also involved in NBL in new season.
6. Best facility in Australia as far as set up goes but i think will struggle as a venue to get supporters interested in game. Seating maybe to far away. Hope I am wrong.
7. Not enough publicity about first home game. Loagn if you try to do this on your own you will die in time. Yes a great sponsor but he will want to see a lot of interest in attendance especially if yo0u think you are te real deal this year.
8. Hope can go undefeated as some were stating last night.
9. BCC should be ashamed of themselves when we compare what Logan have to what we have. Shame Campbell shame.
10. Not a lot of supporters at launch. I think only one set of parents even.
11. No volunteers at launch either. A great place to acknowledge them.
12. Speechs should have been better prepared. By the way who is the Logan President.
13. Not to sure how kids will get to the venue unless they are being driven by the parents.

All in all a great venue with what we hope is a great team let down I think by the attendance and support from fans and sponsors.

Good luck in the season and I hope to be at most games supporting the Queenslanders.

Margo Dydek is a huge signing (pardon the pun) for the Thunder if all comes to fruition. Possibly the most recognisable female import to ever come to our shores. Well done to whoever helped pull that off.

LOGAN THUNDER (WNBL) - LOGAN THUNDER(men U 18) 96 : 92

TWO Polish sisters, measuring 196cm and 218cm, could literally be the biggest signings in Logan basketball history.

The WNBL’s Logan Thunder will take on another dimension – and another foot in height – after the recruitment of the towering Marta Dydek and Margo Twigg.

Twigg is the tallest professional female player in the world and the WNBA’s all-time leading blocker after 10 years in the top US competition.

Dydek, 27, has signed a one-year deal while Twigg, 35, is still trialling and, with her all-star pedigree, is a likely starter come Round 1 on October 2.

“Last year I saw a couple of games on TV and just one live against Sydney and thought it looked like they needed a tall player in the team,’’ Twigg, mother of 17-month-old David, said.

“I’m just here to see if I’m in shape and to see if I’m able to help the team.’’

Twigg, whose former WNBA clubs include the Los Angeles Sparks and Utah Starzz, has enjoyed little court time since becoming a mother and is relishing the prospect of playing alongside her sister.

“I wasn’t playing a lot but in my heart I knew I can play,’’ Twigg, whose foot measures 34cm, said.

“We played against each other but never together.

“We have that sister feeling in life – we can see how that will go in basketball.’’

Arriving on Monday, Dydek, agile for her size, has come off a long season in Spain playing for Valencia.

Thunder officials see the centre’s signing as a huge step in the right direction for the second-year franchise.

“I have been playing in different countries and for different teams, including four years in Spain, and heard about Logan through my sister,’’ Dydek said.

“To be honest I saw it was an ambitious team.

“It’s a new experience for me and I just want to see how it goes.’’

With the Thunder’s young playing roster, Twigg admits she will take some time adjusting to a senior role.

“I was never that old in the team and I don’t know how I will act,’’ she said.

“They don’t have the height but they have the ambition.’’

Logan coach Richard Orlick labelled the duo “two of the biggest signings in the history of the league’’ and says only Twigg’s shyness in front of her new squad stopped her from slam dunking at training.

Logan Thunder’s first game of the 2009-10 season is against AIS at the new Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre next Friday, October 2. Tip-off is 7.30pm.

In regards to the posts above:

Linda Ambrose is the president of Logan Basketball. It has been on the Logan Website for months now and is clearly accessible from the left hand tab. Here is the link: http://www.logan.basketball.net.au/FS_extra.asp?id=35427&OrgID=91

I am also not in agreeance with people making judgements about Logan Basketball when they clearly don't know the story. If you have any concerns or would like to know something about Logan Basketball, please come down and talk to one of the thousands of volunteers that are always there rather than posting rubbish on this basketball forum with no name. At least that way you would have the full story. There are a lot of people who work hard to keep Logan Basketball operating, including a vast array of experienced personnel, and volunteer to ensure that children in the local area have the opportunity to play and watch people like the WNBL girls. There are also a team of people who have worked hard to get the WNBL up-and-running so that juniors have a pathway and something to aspire to. You running them down constantly is selfish. Once again, if you want to be involved come down and check it out. The WNBL team is coming back this season better than ever! There will be lots of parents and children there to support and volunteers to assist in making the games enjoyable. To the person who posted above re: publicity...I think you will find it will all be in the paper etc this week.

Gees mate it seems your hatred of the Logan outfit is irreconcilable. How about you vote with your feet and go find another club that does what you want for you and leave us an extra car park space for the hundreds who will be supporting LBIs WNBL program-gladly!!

For what it is worth...I thought the WNBL team marketed itself as a team for South east Queensland and this was a premise of entering the comp..in the beginning anyway....actually first home game is tonight....our local paper has had nothing...maybe local Logan paper has...not sure how much in Courier Mail..haven't read today's copy though..

I wouldn't mind if our association got sent some info...I checked the website, the player, coach etc profiles are out of date, limited info...are training sessions open to juniors to go and have a look, is there any wider community effort, can you buy a Logan WNBL kids jersey, are other associations kids allowed to come and watch games...the team is full of Spartens, South West, Brisbane, and Rocky juniors, plus some handy recruits...if it is a Queenslander team I am happy to supprt them

would it offend anyone if we brought a bus load of our juniors to the games, gee there would be a marketing strategy...actually invite some associations to come and look what is going on...we would be happy to pay for some tickets, how to you make a group booking -it was easy with the Bullets...wish they were back

NO promotional or marketing for support of the QLD WNBL Womens team AT ALL for tonights first game of 09-10 season and first game in $17 million stadium. AND if there was it was minimal. Same shabby 2nd rate organising on Logans part this season. A busload of juniors, how awesum, there are heaps of promotional ideas that could draw the crowd there tonight and every game night, but alas until ppl work for the game and not for personal gain there will never be sold out houses. Sad for the girls!

Besides all that, which may or may not be true, it was a nice start for the WNBL girls and whatever you may think of what is going on, you would have to agree that last night was a success. Great night out, and the passion of the fans from last season has followed through to this. This household is looking forward to next weekends game!

How many people came to watch first game?

Crowd was about 1100. As said above, game was awsome. Great to see the new players take the court as part of the team. Marta certainly is strong in all aspects of the game!!

Whoever posted about "personal gain" needs to climb off their high horse.... Find something better to do with your time then pick everyone else to pieces and put everyone else down. If you don't like how it's run...volunteer YOUR time to come and help out!!!

Why do you think Logan was unable to enter Qablor dleague - you need money. .
Because LBI (like a lot of other Clubs) saw the QBL as a biggest cheque book competition and made the decision to put their resources into a longer term investment. They still had D League for the developers (user pays like every other Club) but can appreciate the wisdom in not forking out thousands for BQ "admin fees", air fares and accomodation and player payments for 2nd tier league players when it could be utilised to build a top tier womens league program.Dont believe it was ever a matter of being unable to, just decided not to.

how grandiose.....stuff basketball's top comp in favour of a professional team.....what about the men/boys...where do they go....of course it was a money decision.....Logan's WNBL doesn't have any local Logan kids in it yet...it may one day...or the good ones will go to Insitute and then get better offers from Tom Maher, Sydney or Europe......how many of the D-Leaguers are going to make it anyway???? What is in it for the male players at Logan...they will be offered spots in QBL in other places if they are good enough

QBL is for developing local talent.... the WNBL/NBL is for the best of the best....get the best team...win a title and then hopefully it attracts more kids to play the game...for all associations not just Logan.....get real here please!!

and as an add on. Mark Dalton has done a fantatsic job getting the WNBL up and running....read a post about him leaving the WNBL board....he is a paid full-time administrator for LBI...if the WNBL is indeed separte from LBI...and Logan had QBL in previous seasons...why not enter.....surely the costs are no different..if the WNBL is truly separate...
Logan's members pay Mark's and other admin's wages...not WNBL etc....so....why the saving on QBL costs...no development for Logan's boys (or girls)....or juniors for that matter...they will have to go elsewhere for QBL experience....not many (read nil) jump from U16s and U18s straight into WNBL....what benefits did the junior program get in 2009 from not having a QBL team....30 odd players left without a game at senior level....not winter enteratinment at Insports....watching QBL was great in 2008.....hmmmmm!

Hoi!! Very very few jump from U/18 into QBL either!
Just a question...would Logans QBL program have been competitive without import players? Or would you have been grinding another axe about Logan not spending money on imports to prop up your kids while they "develop" in the top league in the State?? If they are good enough they'll shine in D League get a game in QBL with a lucky club and make their own way in Basketball. Having Dad (or is it Grandma) trying to control an Associations programs so his kid can fly around the State getting hammered in a league thats above his ability level isnt going to benefit anyone...especially the kid. If your going to talk sports admin and development please take your "Dad" (or Grandma) hat off and look at the big picture. (If you have any idea what the big picture is)
Another question...where do you reckon LBI would be without the corporate governance provided by the present admin?
Honestly now!? Logans members get extremely good value for the money they pay Mark Dalton. Look around at the salaries commanded by people with half his ability and experience and youd understand. Very fortunate that he has that old school players mentality and sticks with his team through thick and thin till the final bell. You dont get to multiple Olympics and World Championships and play 400+ NBL games without a fair bit of stickability.
Go ahead and vote the Committee out and sack Tang...please...because he's making the rest of the associations and basketball employees look like amatuers!!!

Are you saying Lbi uses the juniors money to help fund the wnbl. Thats what it sounds like I thought they were 2 separate business. Also boys that haved played at the association since Insports Cornubia opened in 98/99 now young men 18,19,20 year olds whose parents have spent thousands of dollars over the years paying club and rep fees year in and year out, loyal to the logan association, can now not expect their boy to aspire to play in the Qbl for Logan because they want to build a top tier womens league programme. Should that boy be good enough he will be picked up by another association. What a load of shite

Tell me why then did we have 2 Qabl teams entered when we had the generous sponsorship of Vergola Brisbane whom I might add the womens team had quite a successful season finishing minor premiers. When Vergolas sponsorship run out Lbi in its 'wisdom' suddenly decided not to waste money on Qabl but build a top tier womens league. Correct me if I am wrong but didnt BDS fund the top tier womens league.... I reckon the simple facts and truth is 'no money/sponsors - no qbl team. Thats why the dleague mum had to go out and raise money for the dleague kids entry.

And yes I have been around since day dot and I can tell you I have never seen any of the wnbl players play a club game at logan... I tell a lie I have seen Bec Haynes and Katie Harris play Wed nite club.

Your raving. "Sounds like"???...reckon you hear what you want to hear regardless of whats said. Pretty common fact of life, 'no sponsor=no QBL program' Would you have LBI spend the juniors money on a QBL program? If a sponsor wants to take his business National and sponsor a WNBL team (rather than a QBL team,) who's to stop him? Do they say "No mate, such and such's Dad (or Grandma) wants their boy to play QBL. He isnt good enough to get a game elsewhere so we have to forgo the WNBL and your sponsorship till we can find someone whose willing to pay for him to have a team to play in"..."Sounds Like" to me.
If you want lollies and the shop only sells fruit, go find a shop that sells lollies. The basketball world doesnt revolve around you and your boy.

Well.....if they had money and sponsors before the WNBL team.....and the QBL and WNBL are separate entities with different budgets etc....why wasn't the association out looking out for their QBL teams separately, ????....to boost Logan's development, (there were plenty of Logan kids in both the mens and womens QBL teams)...not realistic to say Logan's WNBL for Logan's development.....no boys can play for a start........when was the last audit???

earlier posts talk about no one really good enough to go straight from 18s to QBL...crap...Cairns, Gladstone, Gold Coast, Northside, Mackay, Maroochydore all had 16/18s in their teams on the womens side, and a number of the mens teams had junior kids

Fairly sure AGM's require a set number of members to be able to vote....

I asked before and for some reason it was removed so here goes again: I thought LBI had their AGM a few months ago and Tony Ambrose wife, (sorry don't recall her first name) was elected as President? Is this not correct? Not sure what all the talk about AGM's is if this is the case?

I went out to the game last Friday night and must say it was an impressive night. Great venue, team is much improved and the crowd was very good. I was impressed that my child was admitted for free despite the fact she is not a member of LBI, great promotin I thought.
Great job to all concerned for pulling it all off; the team and the stadium both much improved on last years efforts!

I must admit that the venue is out in the middle of no where, this is fact not a knock on anyone or LBI. Despit this I enjoyed the night and will more than likely return to see the ladies play again.

All quiet on the Days of our LBI's front...thankfully.
So whats the scoop on the Thunder v Graffie and the Caps score on Friday night??
Watched them play Bulleen last weekend and thought Caps "lost it" to Bulleen rather than Bulleen beating them...if that makes sense.
Thinking the Thunderbabes having nothing to lose, being an unknown quantity and with some difficult match ups and rotation options for any coach to get their head around might go a bit better than the form line might suggest. Caps will be as hungry as hell to right the ship though and thats a dangerous thang.
Making my way to the new Thunderdome, gladly, to see some quality Womens Basketball.

The Thunderdome is actually at Cornubia the WNBL is played at Metro Insports which hasn't been given a nickname yet. You can thank me later that you didn't turn up to the wrong stadium.

Your kidding right!

Last Fridays game....with all the junior stuff on weekend,no comments on Fridays game as yet. I went, will have a go.....crowd a bit disappointing seeing the reigning champs were playing Thunder...someone said that there was 1100 for the opener vs. AIS....maybe 500/600 last Friday...juniors had something to do with it I guess. Game was close, but marred by mistakes and missed opportunities....Was anyone going to guard Bibby?....Bec Haynes came out firing, then was forgotten and sat...New Polish big kid...a bit slow ....... Sarah G unusually quiet and down on confidence it seemed, Holly is she fit?....Nat hussled, Bianca banged, Vealy was Vealy, Bates - jury is out, none of the SEABL winners hit the floor, I could be corrected here....awesome effort to get that close, with chances to win....form franked by Townsville beating Canberra by 1 Saturday night.....could Canberra be struggling...Bulleen beat AIS by 70 odd...lookout...venue great looking, seats a bit uncomfortable (no backs) double overtime games will require standing or private health insurance...$8 a bourbon/bundy/vodka, won't be a boys/girls night out prospect (the $150 cab fare to get home from the joint will be a deterrent to drink)..cheaper at Suncorp....$12 to get in (good)...bathrooms awesome....a southerly will have the joint smelling like the tip....which is next door...parking awesome, more attendants than Boondall Entertainment Centre (and you don't have to pay....yet!!)..maybe this explains the $8 vodka....all up a pretty positive experience, weighing up the pros and cons......will head out again!

Fair and balanced summation. (Interesting points about the teams too?! Hard to tell just yet but get your drift.) Expensive booze probably in the interests of keeping consumption down in a "family "environment. Probably rather the thirsty revellers pour themselves on to a nightclub (yet to be named) afterwards to frolic with the players and other supporters and hopefully cause said unnamed nightclub to become sponsors ?!??
Over all pretty good I reckon and since they're the only game in town I reckon they deserve our support for having a go and getting this far .

The team needs some serious media exposure....north of the Logan border, no one hears nothin about the team, when games are on.....no nothing.
Such a great venue, could be a great team and they need exposure now!
The crowd won't keep coming when no one know there's a game on.

Stadium only 1/3 filled. This team needs to be marketed.

Why also no support from BQ on their website?

She has done a good job she is a good coach but the team looks like trish is recruiting for the next masters tournament with the age of the team. Just doesnt look like she has achieved what Im sure Ipswich basketball would have hoped. No big name players have signed and the team has seen a large number of the local junior talent that has played with ipswich for years quite since her appointment.

Who's left who otherwise would've stayed then? Don't think you're on the mark with the 'Masters' comment either. Of anyone on the team of importance, Vicki is 39 and Amber is 31 then they get younger. Not exactly Dad's Army?

Ipswich aren't the only ones in the boat of not having a strong based of association-based seniors to call upon, it's a problem far and wide in Queensland. You only need to look at Ippy's 'neighbours' BBI ... largest association in Queensland yet fielded their poorest women's senior team I have seen in a while. There are plenty of great lady players out there, the problem is keeping them interested in playing basketball.

Mystery surrounds Thunder coach (http://albert-and-logan.whereilive.com.au/sport/story/mystery-surrounds-thunder-coach/)

RICHARD Orlick has officially resigned from his role as Logan Thunder head coach with assistant Jason Chainey taking over the reigns for the rest of the 2009-10 WNBL season.

Speculation had mounted about Orlick’s on-going role at the club after he failed to appear during the Thunder’s 79-66 win against Perth in Darwin last week.

This followed reports that Logan CEO Mark Dalton had told a News Limited publication: "Richard has been stood down indefinitely. It is a personal matter for Richard and something he has to deal with.’’

team played great for a half saturday.....they are just not fit enough...this is obvious, preseason is not good enough.....3rd quarter Townsville ran the same play 7 times in a row and scored 6 times...no time out, no changes, ...even the commentators were overstating it......that said, you can't put the ball in the hole, when you are not fit enough at this level.....

DEFIANT Thunder supremo Mark Dalton has looked into the eye of a storm in the past two weeks - now he is hoping his club comes out stronger for it.

With the departure of head coach Richard Orlick, appointment of new boss Jason Chainey and some faltering on-court form, the former Brisbane Bullets star hopes to put a tough fortnight behind him when the club meets Canberra and the AIS this weekend.

Just two years into the its WNBL history, Logan was rocked by Orlick’s sudden resignation and the rumours surrounding his exit.

Probably a bit of both. Joyce would have his daughter in the starting line up from day one and be draining the Owners pockets quicker than any average millionaire could afford. Shane has a full book with his young family, extensive business interests, media contracts and Boomers commitments. No time left to coach WNBL although the competitive side of him would probably be stimulated by Graffie and Tom Maher. Bruce has returned to Victoria and big bucks with Knox. Guys like Vern Roberteau back in OZ with a bit of NCAA experience and Sean Page who is still Head Coach at a Div 2 school over there spring to mind if a new appointment was necessary but everyones probably anticipating Jason Chainey will grow into the role from all indications.

I think Jason needs to be given a good opportunity without people sinking the boot in straight away. All of the people you have mentioned dont have too much experience coaching women, at least Jason does and has had success there too.

I was at the game yesterday and could see the group is getting better and they were extremely unlucky. Now if some disgruntled people around the association including over the top parents settled down and gave the guy a chance to coach they might turn the corner after the xmas break.

Mark is no longer with Logan Association. He is still the GM of Logan WNBL. More time to focus on the women.

Joyce is at Adelaide.

Brisbane Bullets need to have a name at the top and to be distancing themselves from the BQ model. Lost of ways to make something community based then just having BQ involved. Sure they can give support but if it is ever to get off ground needs its own identity.

Big Joe making huge imprint into the QBL. Word is that this is part of rebuilding to get team into SEABL. Makes sense.

Former Bullets coaching staff to be heavilly involved in new Sydney NBL support staff. Watch this space. hahahaha
