The 2008 season for the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans just got better with Donna Rinaldi committing to return as Head Coach.

Rinaldi, recognised as the best female coach in Queensland by many, coached the Lady Spartans in 2007 in the first season within Australia’s Premier Women’s basketball competition.

“We have dominated women’s basketball in Queensland for so many years and the move to the South East Australian Basketball League was a huge learning curve for us this year and our young players, Dalgliesh, Graham and Smith really stepped up” offered Rinaldi. “What we need to do now though is turn that learning into a foundation for the future. We know we can compete and with some players moving north to play with us and Sarah Graham and Holly Smith committing to return to their junior club we will start that process”.

The Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans start the pre-season on Tuesday 13th November at 5:30pm. Players wishing to trial need to contact the office on 3398 2790.

Lady Spartans President, Charles Ellis, stated “We are looking forward to next season with a great deal of interest. It is so good to have Donna back in charge. We are also looking forward to seeing the return of the likes of Shona Burrell and Rebecca Stephens along with some of our very talented juniors taking up the challenge. In 2008 Donna will also be in charge of our Under Pinning Program which means we will have a real continuity from juniors. The office have been very busy in the off season and next years games will be a great family show with the very best young Queenslanders showing just how good they really are in this great women’s sport”.

EAST DOMINATE ALL STAR MATCH

In front of hundreds of eager basketball fans at Vodafone Arena, the East Men All Stars dominated from the tip off and finished the game 124-91 winners. Both teams started at a blistering pace with both teams scoring at will. Frankston Blues import David Gruber was dominating early, scoring nine points in the first quarter and also cleaning the boards at the defensive end.

East All Stars opened up a nine point lead mid way through the first after consecutive three pointers from Nunawading Spectres Michael Thorp. But Hobart Chargers Daniel George and Anthony Stewart improved at the offensive end and helped their team bridge the gap to trail 32-34 after the first quarter.

East All Stars coach Frank Arsego asked his team to lift at the defensive end, and it proved to be the deciding factor, as the East pressured the South All Stars in to many costly turnovers. East punished the South with numerous fast breaks and many easy baskets and increased the lead to 11pts early in the quarter.

South struggled to score in the second quarter, recording a terrible 28% from the field and East keep running the ball and were finding many easy baskets. The East All stars outscored the South All stars 34-20 and went into the half time break leading 68-52.

2005 League MVP David Gruber continued his dominance in the second half, scoring nine points in the third including a thunderous dunk, thanks to a sensational assist from Supercats Jason Reardon. Gruber was unstoppable, and put the game out of the South All stars reach thanks to another solid offensive display. He was able assisted from AIS youngster Zac Carter and Canberra Gunners veteran Paul Denman.

With pride at stake, the South All Stars started the fourth with more intensity, determined to lower the margin, but the East All stars had to much firepower coming off the bench and the South All stars were once again outscored 23-19 in the fourth.

Both teams put on a great display of SEABL basketball, with all players having an impact on the game at various stages in the game.

Frankston Blues forward David Gruber was by far the standout of the game finishing with 25pts and 11rebs. Nunawading Spectres Michael Thorp added 19pts, Supercats Jamie Medved had 13pts and 3ass, and team mate Jason Reardon had a solid all round game performance with 8pts, 11rebs and 6ass.

Hobart Chargers Daniel George led the South All Stars with 16pts and 9rebs, with Mt Gambier Pioneer Dallas Jeffree providing 15pts off the bench.

MEDIA RELEASE

The Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans announced today that star junior Holly Smith, currently playing for Townsville in the Women’s National Basketball League will be returning for the 2008 South East Australian Basketball League.

Smith who has played all her juniors at Carina was recruited to the WNBL after a stand out performance in the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans first season in the SEABL. The SEABL competition is recognised as Australia’s Premier Winter Basketball League.

“After finishing my WNBL season with the Townsville Fire I am really looking forward to coming back to Southern Districts to play SEABL. I have played with Southern Districts since I was five and look forward to being back in BLACK for another season” offered Smith. “It's good to play with the girls you grew up around and admired for many years. Having the support of your home crowd, is certainly something that I look forward to coming back to”.

“I am really looking forward to coaching Holley again” stated head coach, Donna Rinaldi. “She has come so far over the last few years and will be the corner stone of our program for many years to come. We are still looking for another big but Holley goes a long way to making our guards life a lot easier. The season in the WNBL will have helped her immensely and we are all keen to see just what level her game is at now”.

Smith has to finish the season with Townsville prior to returning to the Lady Spartans who started pre-season training last Tuesday and from all accounts it is not easy. “If we want to be the best we need to work the hardest” offered Rinaldi.

In 2008 Carina Leagues Club will again be the major supporter of the team as they have for the last three years. Persons interested in getting involved in the number one women’s program in south east Queensland should contact Allan Ladewig on 3843 3133.

Christmas arrives for Spartans
Vern Robateau as Head Coach for 2008 SEABL

The Southern Districts Spartans of the SEABL conference in the ABA, General Manager Allan Ladewig announced today that Vern Robateau has been named the clubs 5th head coach in the team’s 25-year history.
“This is a great day for the Southern Districts Arrow Caravan & Towbar Spartans and our fans,” Ladewig said. “Vern is one of the best up-an-coming coaches but more importantly is a winner. We know he will bring this attitude to the floor and that value is immeasurable.”
“I am very happy to accept the position as head coach for Southern Districts men's basketball team. I feel this is going to be great experience for me in my personal development as a coach,” Robateau said. “I am also looking forward to coaching in the toughest conference of the ABA in Australia,” he added.
Considered one of the deadliest offensive weapons the ABA has ever seen, Robateau plied his playing trade with the Sun Coast Clippers as a shooting guard, and he didn’t disappoint. Consistently putting up numbers, which saw him lead the league in scoring for 5 years.
After succumbing to knee problems, Robateau hung up the shoes and took up coaching. Working as an Assistant coach in the QABL with the Maroochydore Clippers for the past 3 seasons including a Championship ring in 2006, he was recognized by current NBL, and two time coach of the year, Joey Wright, who recruited Robateau to his Brisbane Bullets staff and has been there ever since.
“Vern brings a lot to the table, excitement, enthusiasm and of course experience. What he brings to the Bullets is invaluable. I think he will bring that same attitude to the Spartans and that can only mean good things for that club,” Wright said.
The Spartans have begun their player recruitment drive a little later then normal due to the delay in naming the coach, however its full steam ahead with some major announced coming up early in the New Year.
Robateau has already been in contact with Brisbane Bullets Brad Williamson and Australian Emu player, Chris Goulding, who are expected to remain with the Spartans while Bullets centre Justin Brown and Dusty Rychart are rumored to be on the radar as well as possibly re-linking with former Spartans junior Cameron Tragardh.
Robateau replaces Bruce Palmer who was at the helm of the Spartans for two seasons and guided them through their inaugural SEABL acceptance season. The Spartans finished fourth on the Eastern Conference ladder, however bowed out in round one of the post season against Frankston.
Palmer has taken up the Head Coaching role with the Brisbane Capitals in the QABL.
The Spartans will commence training soon after the New Year.
Any players wishing to be considered for the 2008 playing roster, please email all details to spartans_seabl@hotmail.com

South Conference

The major talking point of the off-season has been the situation down in Geelong. The departure of long-serving Supercats import Jamal Brown forced Geelong’s hand to sign import centre Brad Bridgewater as a replacement. It is believed Shawn Myers is about to re-sign also, filling the second import spot. These signings may have closed the door shut on favourite son Nathan Herbert playing for the ’Cats in 2008, due to his potential restricted status. Currently playing with the South Dragons in the NBL, he is averaging more than 12 minutes per game, which is the cut-off point for restricted status in ABA competitions. If Herbert is above the average, it is expected the Supercats will explore every avenue of appeal to have him exempted from the ruling. Dean Brebner, currently a development player with the Cairns Taipans, is expected to stay in the north with the Marlins ABA program. Despite what occurs over the next month or so, the Supercats will have an enviable line-up boasting the likes of Cox, Leonard and Bridgewater and will again be one of the favourites in their new conference.

After a trying season in 2007, the Mt Gambier Pioneers will be hoping a number of changes to coaching and playing personnel will turn their fortunes around. Jason Sedlock has stepped down from the unenviable task of player-coach and will return as a player only. Former Pioneers player and crowd favourite Ray De Wit will take over the reigns as head coach. The Pioneers have experienced a high turnover of players in the off-season, with imports Ryan Blankson and Chris Lewis not returning to the club. Former Pioneer Kurt Russell will be back in the green and gold this season, while Chris Mason and Dallas Jeffree will be required to shoulder much of the workload. Mt Gambier will be boosted by the signing of import Josh Steinthal, a 1-2 guard who can score heavily and has experience in Germany and Norway and in the NBA Summer League.

The signing of 6’2” guard Zach Malvic and the return of former Cobra Gerard Leonard is the big news at Kilsyth. The departure of import Brad Bridgewater to the Geelong Supercats has got SEABL supporters talking and it will be interesting to see if they re-sign Singapore Slingers NBL player Chris Cameron as their second restricted player. The Cobras came good at the right time last season and have a solid core group with DJ Taylor, David Smith and Chris Payne all capable of high-scoring games. If they re-sign Cameron, this will complete a very solid starting five as they look to go one better and win the championship in 2008.

The Albury/Wodonga Bandits have been stung badly by player departures in the off-season with four of their starting five from last season leaving the club. The losses of Nick Payne, Josh Morgan, Luke McKerrow, Tom Remmerswaal and Allen McCowan takes the majority of last year’s scoring away and leaves big shoes to be filled. It is unlikely Brad Sheridan will return, but coach Jim Wilson will be doing everything in his power to lure him back to the border. The recent signing of Andrew Rice provides the Bandits with a quality big man to build the rest of the team around. 6’2” guard Gavin Illangakoon will provide Wilson with some scoring punch, and the young NBL player rumored to be joining the team will contribute to an up-tempo and exciting style of play if signed.

The Australian Institute of Sport welcome several new scholarship holders who will take time to find their feet within the program. Second-year players Young, Steindl, Radcliffe and Dellavedova will be called upon to carry increased responsibility early in the season and show the way to the first-year players. 15-year-old Hugh Greenwood from Hobart will be one to watch as the season progresses.

A new coach was appointed down in Hobart, with former Hobart Devils NBL player Dan Krebs taking over the reigns from the long-serving Mark Chivers. Chivers leaves some big shoes to fill, but Krebs will be determined to build on the Chargers’ second-placed finish from last season. Krebs is looking to implement a more up-tempo game and has been training his side for about two months. Rumours have surfaced about a prominent former player returning to the Chargers line-up, and if signed, will be a big boost for the Chargers.

The Frankston Blues keenly re-signed David Gruber back in August at the conclusion of season 2007. Gruber is a prized import and a dominant player in this league, prompting the Blues to retain him for his fifth season with the club as an import player. Playing alongside Gruber will be new import Rob Kampman, a highly-rated 203cm forward with an accurate outside shot. With the Blues retaining the core of their team from last season in the experienced Hankin and Dennis and the youthful exuberance of Harms and Chapman, they look an early favourite to rival Geelong and Hobart for a top two position in the South Conference.

East Conference

Not a whole lot of news coming out of the Canberra camp at the moment. The Gunners are renowned for their all-Australian line-up and the well-publicised fact that many of their players are not paid. They will be eager to re-sign West Sydney Razorbacks starter Anthony Petrie, the reigning SEABL East Conference MVP, although it is tipped that he will head to the New Zealand NBL for some much deserved dollars. Defensive spe^^^^^^t Nick Johnson has retired, but they have ample back-up guard stocks in Ian Callaghan, Joel Richardson and Shane Brown.

Perhaps the headline signing of the off-season was announced in recent weeks with star import Jamal Brown signing with the Ballarat Miners after four seasons with the Geelong Supercats. Brown will be a huge asset for the Miners as they look to work their way up the ladder after last year’s disappointing season. New coach Shane Mathison will be hoping to develop some more junior players, and with the retirement of veteran Eric Hayes and departure of Matt Shanahan, will enter a rebuilding phase.

Knox Raiders are seemingly the ones to beat at this stage. After a disappointing season in 2007 which saw them miss playoff action, they have made some high-profile signings to bolster their line-up. Former Raiders coach Graham Longstaff has returned to take over the reigns as he replaces Damian Cotter, who has a new role as Head Coach of the New South Wales Institute of Sport. The Raiders line-up is looking scary and on paper is one of the best in the competition, with the likes of former Bandits guard Nick Payne, imports CJ Massingale and the exciting dunking machine Lester Strong. Journeyman Senad Dizdarevic heads to Knox Converse Stadium in search of more court time, while former Frankston forward Daniel Briglia will don the blue and gold in 2008. These off-season signings will no doubt excite Raiders fans in what promises to be a high-scoring and up-tempo season down at Knox.

Not a lot of news to come out of Nunawading at this stage. It would be expected that the core group of Thorp, Flynn and Scoffern will again be in Spectres colours. If he returns, talented guard Shane McDonald will be a restricted player due to his average minutes for the Singapore Slingers in the NBL. He will no doubt be better for the experience and be a star player in the SEABL, as he was in 2007 before injury cut short his season. Coach Sedale Threatt will be hoping to lure back evergreen veteran David Biwer, along with man mountain and rebounding machine Jason Eversteyn. The Spectres may decide to bring in another import, perhaps a 3-4 in the mould of a Nathan Herbert.

Heading north, and some important news came out of Devonport last week for the North West Thunder. The Advocate newspaper reported on December 14 that the Armstrong brothers, Ben and Sam, will continue their playing careers in the SEABL. The bad news for Thunder coach Mark Radford is that import Troy De Vries and big man Luke Brennan will not be returning for the 2008 season. While this is somewhat of a setback for the coastal team, Radford has shown in the past he has great scouting ability to pick good quality imports. The Thunder are always a competitive unit and will no doubt announce some high quality signings after the Christmas break.

The Bendigo Braves have suffered a high turnover of players in the off-season, with the retirements of veterans Jason Cameron and Ben Harvey, along with the departure of Michael Hill signaling a changing of the guard. The Braves’ young brigade of Taylor Bell, Pat Jennings and Kevin Probert will be called upon to have an increased impact this season. Despite the losses, the Braves are perennial contenders and under the guidance of coach Wayne Larkins who recently re-signed with the club, will be pushing for a high playoff seeding. American small forward Dustin Bremerman, a former NCAA college player with good scoring ability will fill one import spot, while Wollongong Hawks NBL player Cameron Rigby will return for another season with the Braves in 2008.

A bit of uncertainty surrounds the Southern Districts Spartans over the off-season. Coach Bruce Palmer has moved on, and his replacement is yet to be named at this stage. Aside of the departure of Gerard Leonard, there has been little news of player movement. The Spartans may again opt to attract Bullets players to the program.

With 71 days until the season tips off when Hobart host Canberra, the countdown is on! Join us for more SEABL Spotlight in the lead up to tip-off in SEABL 2008, Australia’s Premier Winter Basketball League.

Spartans Retain Williamson

The Arrow Caravan & Towbar Southern Districts Spartans have retained the services for Brisbane Bullets Championship forward Brad Williamson for the upcoming season as they continue their venture in the SEABL conference, Australia’s premier winter basketball competition.

Williamson will play this year as a restricted player for the first time in his career after lifting all aspects of his game in the NBL with the Bullets, where he is currently averaging 16 minutes and just less than eight points a game.

Williamson and newly appointed head coach Vern Robateau will renew acquaintances who both spring from the Sunny Coast of Maroochydore in Queensland where Williamson, a young boy used to watch in awe, as Robateau would terrorize opponents week in week out.

“It’s going to be great to play for Vern. I was only young when he used to own the ABA, having recently been reunited with him at the Bullets and now at the ABA level, will be a lot of fun,” Williamson said. “The Spartans have been extremely loyal to me over the past so I really couldn’t see myself playing anywhere else anyways,” he added.

The Spartans recruiting campaign started later then usual with the delay in naming a head coach, but it’s full steam ahead and rumors state that the Spartans will once again be a force in the SEABL conference.

“We have had a few of the ‘old school’ guys express interest in returning in some capacity and that part if exciting,” Spartans General Manager Allan Ladewig said. He added, “That’s actually more exciting then any team you can put on the floor, when the guys of the old school era want to be involved again.”

The Spartans play first game of the 2008 campaign on March 1 against the Geelong Supercats in Geelong most probably without Williamson who will possibly be vying for Back-to-Back Championships with the Brisbane Bullets in the National Basketball League.

Spartans 0 – 2

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Spartans have begun their 2008 SEABL campaign with mixed emotions despite suffering back to back, one point losses to Geelong Supercats and Nunawading Spectres on the weekend.

The Spartans travelled to Geelong on Saturday only a couple of days after the Brisbane Bullets were eliminated from the NBL championship run, making some of the Spartans recruits available for the trip.

“It surprised me,” Spartans Operations Manager Big Joe said. “We lost that game on Thursday night to the Tigers and the 0708 NBL campaign was over, then at the post game function, Chris (Goulding), Brad (Williamson) and JB (Justin Brown) all asked if they wanted to go, could they?”

All three found themselves on the trip down South and provided the Spartans with a much needed boost despite not attending any previous training sessions.

“Yes, it’s going to be different to have these guys out there. We weren’t expecting to have any of the NBL players until Round 4 so it’s new for all of us. They wanted to play, so we can’t have left them at home,” Head coach Vern Robateau said.

In Geelong, the Supercats burst out of the blocks taking an 8 point lead into the first quarter but the Spartans cut that margin to just 5 at the main break.

The Spartans out scored the Supercats by 4 points in the second half but it wasn’t enough to get over the line and suffered a heart-breaking 1 point loss but it was the way in which the Spartans went about business that really impressed coach Robateau.

“They are just a professional group of people. I mean, we lost the NBL semi a couple of night before and they all just wanted to play,” Robateau added.

And play they did. Brad Williamson and Chris Goulding scored 22 points each and both grabbed 13 rebounds, with centre Justin Brown netting 24 points and grabbing 13 rebounds as well.

The following afternoon the Spartans ventured into Nunawading where the Spectres were awaiting them. With both rosters now boasting impressive NBL names, the game was always going to be of high quality.

This time it was the Spartans the hit a quick-fire 31 in the opening stanza but was then outscored by 14 points in the second period to suffer their second 1 point loss in as many days, 105 – 104.

The shining light once again were the “big three” for the Spartans lead by Chris Goulding who poured in a career high 38 points strongly backed up by Williamson and Brown with 18 points each and Brown grabbing an impressive 15 rebounds.

Despite the two first round losses, Spartans coach Robateau remains upbeat, “We are going to give this thing a good shake now and early on. We hadn’t planned on having the NBL guys in this early so that’s a bonus and a week in training with them there, will make a world of difference.”

The Spartans will have their first home game of the 2008 season at the Carina Basketball Stadium this coming Saturday night at 7:30pm.

The Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans also take on the might of Victoria in the Lady Blues who have one of Australia’s best winning records. Doors open at 5:30pm and reserved tickets are still available from the canteen 6pm – 9pm weeknights.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – SEABL MEN

CHRIS GOULDING – Southern Districts Spartans

After a full summer playing in the NBL with the Brisbane Bullets, 19 year old Chris Goulding stamped himself as a future star with a stellar performance this weekend. Despite his team recording a 0-2 result on the road, both games were decided by a solitary point. Goulding only registered to play this weekend on Friday morning and had not trained with the team all pre-season, but displayed an array of skill and athleticism to average 30pts and 10.5rebs.

Goulding at 190cm is one of the smaller players on his team, but finished the game on Saturday against Geelong as equal top rebounder for his team with 13 boards. Chris also recorded 22pts, 1ass, 2stls and 1blk. The following day Chris recorded 38pts@50% and 8rebs but could not get his team over the line as the Spartans lost their second straight game by one point, losing to Nunawading 104-105. Chris was deadly from behind the arc, connecting on 8 three pointers, including a successful attempt to put the Spartans within a point with a minute to play.

Other notable performances were;

q With 25pts@48%, 20rebs and 2blks Jamal Brown impressed his new hometown fans, helping the Miners secure the Advertiser/Courier cup with a 108-98 overtime win against Bendigo.

q Despite his team recording a 0-2 result on the road this weekend, Dallas Jeffree has started the season in blistering form averaging 30.5pts, 7.5rebs and 4.5ass for the weekend and highlighted himself as a major offensive threat this season.

Spartans Narrow Loss

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Spartans have suffered it’s third straight defeat and are lingering at the bottom of the SEABL ladder after a 125 – 118 loss to the Frankston Blues on Saturday night at Carina Basketball Stadium.
SEABL’s round 1, Player of The Week, Chris Goulding was once again the standout for the Spartans, scorching the Blues with 37 points shooting the ball at 60% from the field, including 4 of 7 three pointers.

Fellow Bullets teammates Justin Brown added 22 points and 10 rebounds while Adam Gibson had 21 points, 7 rebounds and dished out 7 assists.

For the visitors, import Dave Gruber poured in 30 points and 14 rebounds.

The Spartans were on the receiving end of a lop-sided foul count, being called for 30 fouls to the Blues 18, but Spartans head coach Vern Robateau wasn’t making excuses.

“The game just felt slow tonight,” Spartans Head Coach Vern Robateau said. “We like to get up and run, but there were so many fouls called it slowed us down and we couldn’t really get into it.”

The Blues maintained a 10 point buffer for most of the game with the Spartans throwing a challenge during the fourth quarter where they cut the 12 point margin to just 4 points but he Blues held on for the win.

“They made some very tough shots. We had hands in their faces but they seemed to just knock down shots,” Robateau said.

The Blues shot the ball at 50% for the game and 60% from the three point line.

Robateau conceded, “Those kinds of percentages will win you most ball games.”

The worrying factor for the Spartans is Brad Williamson’s shooting touch. Usually known as a prolific scorer and sharp shooter, in the Spartans first three games, Williamson has shot 15/65.

As a sharp shooting guard himself, Robateau understands the poor form reversal is just around the corner.

“It’s not something we think about too much. As a shooter, you just want to keep getting them up. You always feel the next one is going in and that gets you on a roll. That just hasn’t happened yet but I’m sure it will,” Robateau said.

The Spartans are at home again (Carina Basketball Stadium) this Saturday night looking to avenge a round 1 one point loss against Nunawading Specters. Tip off is 7:30pm with tickets on sale at the canteen between 6pm – 9pm weeknights.

Lady Spartans Lose Double

In both games on the week-end the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans came within a whisper of creating a huge upset in the South East Australian Basketball League.

Nunawading a power of Victorian basketball with no fewer then four current Women’s National League Players were expected to run all over the Lady Spartans who are very young and smaller compared to the other Teams.

“We played so well at different times” offered Head Coach Donna Rinaldi. “The facts are that until we can get some support for Smith and Pryor we will struggle. I am so proud though of the efforts of everyone. No player did not hit the court ready to play”.

For the locals Shona O‘Bree won the player of the series with great efforts in the back court, where her shooting time and time again kept the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans in the game.

Captain Rebecca Stephens also proved she is still the leader as she took on the tough assignments in defence with Melissa Tronc making her debut for the season as she played at a level that inspired the younger players.

“We always knew this year would be hard but we are going to be better for it” Stated President Charles Ellis. “Donna is a great coach and she is doing wonders with the youngsters. We know what we need to do to get there and this being our second year in this level of competition we are on track to become a power in the following years”.

Scores Saturday night Nunawading 84 Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans 80. Sunday Nunawading 71 Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans 60.

In the men though it was a different story with the Arrow Caravan & Towbar Spartans winning their first game of the 2008 SEABL season against the Nunawading Spectres on Saturday night 113 – 102 at Carina Basketball Stadium.

With seven of thirteen junior Spartans teams from under 12 – under 18 boys and girls featured in the Basketball Queensland junior representative grand final, crowd numbers were down but the quality of the game which featured more then eight NBL players was outstanding.

Bullets swingman Brad Williamson answered a mid-week text message from head coach Vern Robateau to lift his game for the must win clash at Carina Basketball stadium, where the Spartans have only lost 3 games over the past three seasons.

“I just sent him a text during the week telling him I need him to bring his A game this week,” Robateau said. “It was a must win game especially at home,” he added.

Williamson obliged by pouring in 27 points and grabbing 10 rebounds and finding his shooting touch along the way shooting 59% from the field including 5 of 8 three pointers.

“He answered the call as I expected him to. We all know he can shoot and score and I said last week, it was only time before it all clicked,” Robateau said.

The Spartans burst out of the blocks amassing a huge 41 point first quarter and holding the Spectres to just 20 points and looked like taking the game away, but the Spectres held in and cut the margin to just 6 points midway through the fourth quarter but the Spartans held on for the 11 points win.

Williamson was ably supported by five other team mates in double figures. Bullets team mate Justin Brown with 19 points and 12 rebounds, SEABL’s round 1 player of the week Chris Goulding with 18 points, Matt Edmonds with 14 points and Boomers guard Adam Gibson added 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

For the visitors, Mark Whitehead top scored with 21 points and Singapore Slingers guard Shane McDonald added 16 points.

The Spartans enjoy the Easter weekend off before heading down south to Tasmania for a double header.

Spartans Split Road Double

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Spartans have returned home from the Apple Isle with one win and one loss against Hobart Chargers and North West Tasmania Thunder respectively despite not having the services of star guard Peni Nasalo due to work commitments.
The Spartans burst out of the blocks early in Hobart taking an early lead which ballooned out to as much as 18 points late in the second quarter before the Chargers made a run closing the gap to just five after the third period.

The Chargers chief destroyer was Robert Inches who hit 22 points; however the usually high scorer and NBL legend Anthony Stewart was restricted to just 10 points.

For the Spartans the Bullets big four responded, lead by youngster Chris Goulding with 27 points and 6 rebounds, big man Justin Brown added another double double with 26 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, with Adam Gibson and Brad Williamson supporting well with 18 and 17 points respectively.

“It was really good to get this win,” Spartans team captain Matty Edmonds said. “Last year they pipped up at the post with Stewy (Anthony Stewart) nailing a three pointer from the car park so this one felt real nice,” he added.

The following night the Spartans traveled to Devonport where the North West Tasmania Thunder awaited. Last season’s match up was a spiteful and physical affair which resulted in Thunder import being reported for throwing a punch.

The Thunder held a slender 2 point lead at the end of the first quarter and took a 4 point lead in at halftime. The Spartans weren’t able to close the margin and suffered their fourth loss of the season 110 – 103.

“It’s obviously disappointing but anytime you can split a double road weekend, you can walk away feeling ok,” Spartans head coach Vern Robateau said.

“We just have a few little tweaks to make over the next week and we’ll be back on track and make out climb up the ladder,” he added.

The Spartans record now stands at 2 – 4 and thing don’t get any easier with top of the table Kilsyth Cobras traveling to Carina Stadium this Saturday night. Tip off is 7:30pm and pre-paid tickets are available at the canteen between 6pm – 9pm weeknights.

Spartans Return to Winning Way

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Spartans slow climb up the South Conference SEABL ladder has taken a boost after defeating top of the table, Club Kilsyth Cobras 114 – 98 at Carina Basketball stadium last Saturday night.

The Spartans customary slow starts to seasons looks to have been put behind them as they now sit in fifth position.

In front of the best crowd all season, the Spartans made a slow start with the Cobras taking an early advantage by the end of the first quarter with former Spartan, Gerard Leonard connecting on 12 of his 23 points in the first.

His partner in the back court, Zac Lalvik also had 23 points with center Joe Werner nailing a team high 32 points and grabbing 17 rebounds.

However, it was only a matter of time before the sleeping giant awoken and it was once again, the Bullets quartet that did the damage.

Australian Boomers guard Adam Gibson once again lead the way with 26 points, and big man Justin Brown added 22 points and 17 rebounds including a monster third quarter two handed dunk which raised the roof. Both Chris Goulding and Brad Williamson also chimed in with 21 and 19 points respectively.

It was a tail of two halves at the Spartans took a slender seven point lead into the main break, but then fired on all cylinders to run away with the win. However, the Cobras sent a slight scare through the Spartans camp after leading by as many as 18 points, the Cobras cut the lead to just 6 midway through the fourth quarter.

The match-up between both team’s big men, Brown and Werner was worth the admission price itself.

In the earlier game, the Carina Leagues Club lady Spartans defeated the lady Cobras in a tight battle, 73 – 68. Lady Spartans head coach had suited up but didn’t make it out on the court.

Next week the lady Spartans enjoy a bye while the Spartans Men play the Albury/Wadonga Bandit, at Carina Basketball Stadium on Saturday night, tip off at 7pm.

Spartans Media Release

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Spartans have reached a .500 record after demolishing the Albury Wodonga Bandits 129 – 88 at Carina Stadium last Saturday night.

The win pushes the Spartans to a 4 – 4 record, while keeping the winless Bandits at the bottom of the ladder.

In a game littered with NBL talent, all 12 Spartans players made it onto the court including new comers Gabriel Gala and Andrew Taylor.

The Spartans burst out of the blocks amassing 36 and 35 point first and second quarter points and a 20 point lead. The all important third quarter saw the Spartans lead balloon to 35 points and it was down hill from there. Again it was the Brisbane Bullets big four who once again lead from the start.

Chris Goulding was the star amongst stars for the Spartans with 29 points, 21 of them in the first half, and grabbed 12 rebounds. Brad Williamson added 20 points while Adam Gibson and Justin Brown added 15 points each and 9 and 15 rebounds respectively.

“We see this as a stepping stone,” Spartans head coach Vern Robateau said. “I think we’ve turned the corner now. We’re at .500 and we just have to keep winning at home.”

With road wins hard to come by for any team, the Spartans are looking to defend their impressive record at Carina Stadium where they have only lost 2 games in over 5 seasons.

For the Bandits, New Zealand Breakers player Ryan Kersten lead the way with 25 points, with support from Andrew Rice and Singapore Slingers forward Blagoj Janev chipping in with 19 points each.

The Spartans host Geelong Supercats at Carina Stadium this Saturday night at 7:30pm. Geelong are the number one program in Queensland whom many consider should be playing in the National Basketball League

“We have a huge one this weekend against Geelong here at home,” Spartans captain Matty Edmonds said. “They pipped us by one point at their place in round 1, so payback is definitely on our minds.”
Last season the Spartans ventured into the SEABL conference of the ABA, Australia’s premier winter basketball competition with a seemingly strong enough team, capable of shaking the Supercats strangle-hold on treble of Championships.

Last season saw an undermanned Spartans team travel to Geelong and cop a 30 point lesson at the hand of the Supercats and a rude awakening into the SEABL conference.

In the rematch at Carina Stadium, Brisbane, the Supercats entered the Sunshine State riding a 17 game winning streak and high atop the SEABL ladder, however was met by a Spartans team who had added the NBL’s best player, Sam Mackinnon who guided the Spartans to a 10 point win with 26 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists.

The Spartans won’t have Sam Mackinnon this time around, but the Bullets ‘big four’ have been firing all season building up to this titanic clash.

Centre Justin Brown has been simply sensational in the middle averaging a double/double, Brad Williamson has found his shooting touch, Adam Gibson is guiding the troops and Chris Goulding is sizzling right now.

“It has the ingredience to be an absolute blockbuster,” Spartans head coach Vern Robateau said. “Both teams have NBL players, both teams can score and both teams are exciting to watch,” he added.

“This is as close as you’ll get to an NBL game this time of the year so we encourage everyone to come on down for a look,” Operations Manager Joe Tertzakian said. He added “It’ll be fast, it’ll be of high quality, it will be up close and it will be entertaining.”

The earlier game will be no different with the Bendigo Lady Braves travelling to Brisbane to play the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans. The Lady Braves who are the feeder program to the Bendigo Spirit WNBL team will provide Brisbane with a glimpse of WNBL standard basketball as Logan Thunder will be Brisbane’s soul representative in the WNBL later this year.

“It’ll be a great chance for people to see what WNBL is about and see the standard at which it’s played, especially with the Logan Program beginning here in Brisbane later this year. The Lady Braves are filled with WNBL experienced players so, like the men, it will be extremely entertaining,” Spartans General Manager Allan Ladewig added.

The Spartans and Lady Spartans players will be handing out tickets locally to generate interest in seeing an extremely high level of men’s and women’s basketball up close and personal.

The games will be played at the Carina Basketball Stadium, Zahel Street, Carina this Saturday night, tipping off at 6pm with the mens game to follow at 7:30pm.

Tickets are available at the stadium canteen weeknights 6pm – 9pm and Saturday 8am – 2pm.

Don’t miss this one.

Spartans Enter Top Four

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Spartans have stormed into the top four of the South Conference SEABL ladder by amassing a score line resembling a cricket match, en route to defeating the Geelong Supercats 150 – 131 in Carina last Saturday night.

The first quarter ended with both teams locked at 29 points each which set the stage for a high scoring, free flowing game however it was the second and third quarters where the Spartans asserted themselves, outscoring the visitors by 8 and 12 points respectively.

In a game littered with NBL players, for the Supercats, South Dragons guard Nathan Herbert lead all scorers with 42 points and former Cairns Taipans and New Zealand Breakers forward Daniel George adding 22 points.

For the Spartans, the Bullets big four once again lead the way combining for 109 points of the teams 150. Guards Adam Gibson and Chris Goulding had a night out scoring 31 points each and grabbed 8 and 7 rebounds respectively. Center Justin Brown chipped in with 24 points and 13 rebounds with Brad Williamson adding 23 points.

However, it was guard Peni Nasalo who walked away with the post game MVP award with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists and was instrumental in providing the Spartans spark in the second quarter.

“It was great to defend our home court again tonight,” Spartans head coach Vern Robateau said. “We’ve now won 4 of our last 5 but to win against one of the best teams in the competition is very satisfying.”

The Supercats defeated the Spartans in Geelong in round 1 by a single point so this was sweet revenge.

“Yes, of course it feels great. They are an extremely good team and it really gives us a good indication of where we are at, when we play Geelong. They are the yardstick for this competition,” Spartans captain Matty Edmonds said.

In the earlier game, the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans were defeated by a WNBL strength Bendigo Lady Braves 50 – 64. New import Raysha Ritter made her debut for the Lady Spartans with 2 points in 18 minutes of playing time.

The Lady Spartans have another bye next week while the Spartan men take on Mt Gambier Pioneers at Carina Basketball Stadium.

Tip off is 7pm however, everyone is encouraged to be at the stadium by 6:20pm as the Southern Districts Spartans will be making a special ANZAC tribute at approximately 6:30pm.

Lest we forget.

Spartans move to Third

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Spartans have moved up one more notch to third place after defeating the Mt Gambier Pioneers 102 – 74 at the Carina Basketball Stadium last Saturday night.

The game began with an appropriate tribute presentation in remembrance of the ANZACS where both teams admirably stood lined up at the free throw line during the entire emotionally charged 7 minute production.

“It was really appreciated to have them (Mt Gambier) be so supportive of what we wanted to do here. Yes we were here for a basketball game, but that just puts into perspective that there sometimes is much more important things to life then hoops,” Spartans head coach Vern Robateau said.

The Spartans jumped out of the blocks at tip off racing to a 30 – 15 first quarter lead and never looked back.

Bullets youngster Chris Goulding has kept up his sizzling form with 21 points and 7 rebounds with Brad Williamson and Zac Carter adding 16 points each in a night where the Spartans big four were rested for extended periods of time.

For the visitors Tristan Parham and Dallas Jeffree both added 20 points.

The Spartans now sit in third place and riding the wave of a 4 game winning streak.

This weekend they travel on a double road trip weekend against Bendigo Braves and Ballarat Miners.

I see the Spartans only suited up six players for their away game on Friday night. Is this some kind of joke?? That's fucking disgraceful in what is a semi-professional league.

Only eight players for Saturday night too ... please explain!

I think the SEABL experiment is failing for the Spartans.

Having stated it that they were in it as a pathway for their juniors, well let's be honest, their juniors are suffering.

The men's team is whatever money can buy, and the women are just pulled from anywhere.

No D League team for an association that could sorely use it to give those a run who are now too old to play in the 18s.

In what way is programm failing?

We just won Harold Peacock Trophy fro Most successful junior program in South Queensland.

SEABL teams enjoy competitive game every week and suporters love it with large gate takings that help ensure the program runs at profit.

We elected to play GBL, not D Laegue, this year and will continue to support this program as it allows our juniors a pathway that leaves them free on week-ends to do other things besides basketball. GBL is not about winning but a pathway. Not what you may see as best practice but generates interest within stadium and reduces cost to those athletes who elect to compete.

Senior players starting to be drawn to Spartans as they see pathway extended for them to play at level every week. No put down meant to anyone but every week is a game that can be won by either team.

Sponsors attracted to National concept. What other Association in the southern parts of Queensland can claim to have major sponsors Carina Leagues Club, Coke, Peters,GIsler Pies (major pastry company), And1, Arrow Caravan and Towbars (major distrubutor of Caravans), and other major sponsors who all contribute due to the program. A new sponsor coming soon will also enhance us as a National team playing in a National competition.

What other Association attracts, due to SEABL competition, so many NBL standard players. Talk all you want about money but the facts are without SEABL the players would still not come. They want the standard at teh highest level week in and week out just ask them.

As an aside we also receive benefits due to SEABL increasing local domestic awareness. We are now seriously planning the building of new facilities which will be air-conditioned and able to cater for International events.

Maybe in years to come even the Brisbane Bullets playing out of a 3000 seat stadium similar to the one Tigers use. Makes sense to pay $15,000 a game night rather the the $40,000 they do now. Thats a $300,000 savings for theh NBL program and a sure way to make sure we are competitive in SEABL with the increased rent of $200,000. Juniors would also benefit greatly from this.

ABA branding is finished and we all only play in ACC now. In years to come every team will have option of playing in Australian Club Championship. Clubs will question value of playing full State once this sinks in.

SEABL are looking to make the East versus South the grand final and last game of season. Maybe good maybe bad but at least a fresh concept which means one day it will be played at Carina.

I think rather then offering up you "most likley your wish that we fail" you will find the Spartans are moving to another level and the current positioning within the sport. This year is about steadying the program and next year when we become a full member within the SEABL we reduce operational costs significantly due to the SEABL covering our largest expanse the travel. This will allow us to employ a full time dircetor of junior coaching.

The debate about SEABL verus QABL is over. Everyone seems happy so lets just move on. The talk of our demise is to say the least a little pre-mature. hahahahah

Spartans Lose Again

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars slide down the Eastern Conference SEABL ladder has continued with their third straight loss, this week to Knox Raiders 103 – 84 at Carina Stadium on Saturday night.

A sluggish Spartans outfit, were able to keep pace with the visitors ending the first quarter ahead by just three points. However, it was in the second period where the Raiders flexed their muscle pouring in a massive 30 points and restricted the Spartans to just 17 points.

The Spartans then ended the first half down 10 points, and maintained that spread for the majority of the third quarter before mounting an assault midway through the fourth quarter reducing the margin to just 4 points before the Raiders unleashed a barrage of three pointers to once again pour in a 30 point plus quarter while holding the Spartans to just 22 points.

Raiders import CJ Massingale continued his red hot form pouring in 30 points with Glen Siegle the chief destroyer late in the fourth with 4 of 5 three pointers adding 23 points.

The Spartans were without center Justin Brown how has been sidelined for a month after suffering a slight tear in his knee against Bendigo a week ago, but Adam Gibson top scored with 21 points grabbed 8 rebounds and dished out 8 assists.

Zac Cater came off the bench and added 14 points and 7 rebounds, while Brad Williamson and Chris Goulding added 13 points each.

“It’s extremely disappointing to lose anytime, let alone three in a row,” Spartans had coach Vern Robateau said. “We had turned a corner a few weeks ago and playing some really good ball but we have taken a couple of backward steps.”

The road ahead doesn’t get any easier with the Canberra Gunners heading to Brisbane next week, then the following week, a tough triple header road trip against Mt Gambier, Kilsyth Cobras and a rematch with the Knox Raiders.

Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans shut down the Raiders

In a display of power and speed the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans showed they made the right decision to jump into “Australias Premier Winter Basketball Competition” the South East Australian League when they defeated Victorian powerhouse Knox.

“The Knox Basketball Association have a membership base of 14,000 members, over half the size of the sport in Queensland, and access to resources we can only dream of and yet we were still able to get the win” offered Charles Ellis, President of Southern Districts. “Donna has done a great job in assembling this young crew and even with three players jumping ship to the Women’s National League from last years team we continue to improve every week”

Knox came out of the blocks running and not until Holly Smith took the ball inside did the Lady Spartans start to show a glimpse of what was to come. In defence Melissa Tronc again proved that she is without challenge one of Queensland great players shutting down anyone she was asked to defend. Her efforts inspiring the bench to hit the court ready to play.

Shona O’Bree again proved she is Queenslands best home grown point guard when she gave former Lady Spartan, Sarah Graham, a lesson on control and passing. O’Bree went on to win the MVP for the game but was supported so well by Tronc and Rebecca Stephens who could not have returned to form at a better time.

“Stephens and Tronc form the best duo on defence in Queensland. They simply do not allow the opposition to get set at any stage. The athletism of Stephens is not challenged in Queensland. She should be playing WNBL” stated Head Coach, Donna Rinaldi.

Off the bench junior Odette Andrew also was a force hitting many shots at crucial times as did Kate Willey.

Finals score for the game was Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans 79 defeated Knox Raiders 63. Top scorers O’Bree 18, Smith 16, Andrew 11 and Willey 11. Defensive player of the match a joint award to Stephens and Tronc.

The next home game for the team is Saturday when they play at home to Ballarat at 6pm followed by at midday on the Sunday.

Scrappy game last night as the Spartans claimed a 12 point win in front of a half-filled stadium. Half-time entertainment of fluroescent hula hoopers was dreadful.

In a major upset the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans defeated Victorian powerhouse, Ballarat, in both games last weekend. On Saturday night the Lady Spartans ran away with a 78 to 66 point win under the on court direction of Shona O’Bree and the inside strength of Holley Smith who collects 10 rebounds to go with her 4 assists and 18 points.

On Sunday it was a lot closer with the Ballarat Miners not wanting to lose fourth place on the ladder. In a dog fight to the finish neither team was ever more then 5 points in front until the very last second when Melissa Tronc scored from a long court pass from Rebecca Stepens to get the Carina Laegues Club Lady Spartans home by 7 points.

“Last year the team was not able to handle the pressure that the other teams applied to us for the full forty minutes but this year we know we can win and we are now starting to show the benefits of playing in `Australia’s Premier Winter Basketball League` the SEABL” offered Head Coach Donna Rinaldi. “I know the girls will be celebrating this at the Carina Leagues Club this afternoon. I sure will be”.

This has been a great week for the Lady Spartans with Shona O’Bree and Holley Smith both named in the SEABL team of the week after the constant efforts of late. On a lesser note the Association released USA import Raysha Ritter who will now look to move on to Europe. “Raysha was a great person and will be missed around the club but I am sure this will not stop the momentum that the Lady Spartans are currently having and we are looking serious at making the playoffs this year” stated President Charles Ellis.

The Arrow Caravan & Towbar Spartans returned with a vengance in the last quarter against Canberra Gunners to revive the playoff hopes.

Led by Adam Gibson the Spartans came from behind 77 to 82 at three quarter time before the defence ignited by Goulding and Gibson spurred on a 10 and 0 run which saw the Spartans jump to the lead. After that it was all over as fatigue set in for the visitors and the fans rose to their feet to cheer home the team.

Adam Gibson was again named man of the match with 32 points assisted by Goulding with 22 and Williamson with 21.

Both teams travel away this week but return on Saturday the 31st May against the Lady Spartans play Albury and the men play Ballarat. On Sunday the 1st June the Australian Institute of Sport visit the Rowland Cowan Stadium at the Clem Jones Youth Centre.

“This is a game that everyone should place on the calendar. These are Australia’s best young players and this is the only time they will come to Queensland. Last year we won here but this years crop is better and will test us to the limit” offered Allan Ladewig, General Manager. “Tickets will only be sold at the door on the day but as an incentive to aspiring young basketballers players, by wearing a basketball Association or club shirt players under 18 years of age will be allowed in free on the day. We want everyone to come and see just how good the sport can be played and allow them to see hopefully the future Boomers.“

Additional information can obtained by calling the stadium on 3398 2790.

Spartans Stay Put at 4th

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Spartans have remained in fourth position on the Easter Conference SEABL ladder after a tough triple game road trip on the weekend.

On Friday night the Spartans traveled to Mt Gambier and despite sub freezing conditions, walked away with a tight 104 – 99 win on the back of Adam Gibson’s 42 point haul. Chris Goulding added 27 points with captain Matty Edmonds adding 12 points.

Greg Vanderjagt, who was signed up to replace injured Justin Brown chipped in with 13 points and 12 rebounds in his first game back as a Spartan.

The following night the Spartans headed to Knox, Melbourne. In round 11 in Brisbane, the Raiders dished up a lesson to the Spartans defeating them 84 – 103. Revenge was firmly on the Spartans minds but it was not to be. The Raiders once again dominated a lethargic Spartans outfit 99 – 73.

Vanderjagt lead the way with a double double, 13 points and 15 rebounds with Zac Carter top scoring with 14 points and 8 rebounds and was awarded the Spartans MVP at the Raiders post game function.

Adam Gibson added 13 points and Chris Goulding 12 points.

The following afternoon the Spartans played Kilsyth Cobras and suffered their third one point loss of the season 82 – 81. Adam Gibson once again lead the way with 30 points and Vanderjagt kept his stellar weekend going with 17 points and 19 rebounds.

Chris Goulding went down with an ankle injury midway through the second quarter and is expected to be out for at least a week.

Spartans head coach Vern Robateau was still upbeat about the weekend’s results.

“While we didn’t achieve our main goal we started showing signs that we are going to finish this thing strong. I was really happy with the Sunday game despite the loss. This was our third game in three days, but the boys were able to lift and play hard. I was happy with that.”

The Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans joined their male counterparts for the games against Knox Raiders and the Kilsyth Lady Cobras and have extended their wining streak to 5 games and continuing their steep climb up the SEABL ladder into sixth place.

After a disappointing inaugural SEABL season in 2007, the Lady Spartans have chipped away and are slowly being showed the respect and fear that once set them apart from all competitors in the Queensland league, where the Lady Spartans dominated everyone during the 90’s in the QABL culminating with a National Championship in 1999.

“It’s taken a little while, but I think we are certainly being shown the respect that we used to command in the Queensland league in the SEABL now,” club President Charles Ellis said. “We went into this league to give our girls a challenge instead of 50 points wins week in week out.”

And challenges they are getting. The Lady Spartans have defeated some major powerhouse Victorian teams in the past three rounds, including wins over Knox in Round 11, Ballarat twice in round 12 and Knox and Kilsyth last weekend.

In Knox the Lady Spartans help off a comeback to take the win 61 – 60 and recorded a 74 – 68 win against the Lady Kilsyth Cobras in a physical battle.

The Lady Spartans have a chance to extend their winning streak with two games this weekend in Brisbane against the last placed, winless Albury-Wodonga Bandits.

The Spartan men also play a double header against Ballarat Miners on Saturday night and the Australian Institute of Sport on Sunday at 1:30pm. All young up and coming basketballers under 18 will gain free entry to Sunday’s game against the AIS.

Spartans Cruise to 4 Wins

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars have cruised to two out of two wins last weekend against the Ballarat Miners 107 – 96 and the Australian Institute of Sport102 – 85 and cements their spot in fourth position on the Eastern Conference SEABL ladder.

Superstar guard Adam Gibson was rested before his week-long Australian Boomers camp. Regardless, the Spartans burst out of the blocks early ending the first quarter leading 33 – 20 and took a 16 point lead into the main break.

The lead ballooned out to as many as 24 points before the Miners mounted a charge at the Spartans lead amassing 34 points in the third quarter and holding the hosts to just 18 points.

However it was the man in the middle who settled the Spartans on the back of Greg Vanderjagt who simply dominated with 30 points and 15 rebounds. Chris Goulding added 24 points with Zac Carter chipping in 21 points and grabbing 8 rebounds.

For the Miners, import and former Geelong Supercats MVP Jamal Brown lead the way with 23 points and 14 rebounds.

The following day, in front of the best crowd of the season, the Spartans flexed their muscle against the Australian Institute of Sport where Greg Vanderjagt once again dominated with 26 points and 19 rebounds, while Chris Goulding lead all scorers with 31 points.

For the AIS it was more of a home coming with six scholarship holders hailing from Queensland. Brisbane’s Brock Motum scored 21 points, with Logan’s Mitch Young adding 15 points and Cody Ellis with 13 points.

In the womens games, the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans have extended their winning streak to seven after a forfeited win on Saturday night against the Albury/Wodonga Lady Bandits who missed a flight and wasn’t able to arrive to the Carina Basketball Stadium in time.

In the return match on Sunday, the Lady Spartans simply outclassed the winless Lady Bandits 109 – 56 with all ten Lady Spartans making the score sheet lead by veteran Rebecca Stephens with 23 points, Holly Smith with 19 points and Shona O’Bree adding 15 points.

The entire SEABL competition will have next weekend off before the Lady Spartans head off to Bendigo and Ballarat and the men travel to Canberra and AIS.

Spartans Move to Third Place

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Spartans have moved into third spot on the SEABL Eastern Conference ladder after splitting their road trip last weekend against Albury/Wodonga Bandits and the Frankston Blues.

Against the Bandits the Spartans were firing on all cylinders en route to a stellar 124 – 81 blowout. Chris Goulding and Adam Gibson lead the way with Goulding amassing 33 and grabbing 11 rebounds while Gibson added 25 points.

Spartans bench came to life with Zac Carter adding 19 points and Jeff Morton grabbing a valuable 11 rebounds to go with his 8 points.

The following afternoon the Spartans traveled to Frankston where the Blues were awaiting them. Silky smooth guard Peni Nasalo was ruled out with an ankle injury and the Spartans suffered in his absence losing by 12 points 83 – 71.

Despite ending the first quarter 3 points ahead, the Spartans were humbled in the second allowing the Blues to pour in 29 points and only score 19 themselves.

Spartans shooter Zac Carter left his shooting touch in Albury/Wodonga and managed just 2 points on 1 of 11 shooting from the field. Adam Gibson once again led the way with 25 points with Greg Vanderjagt and Chris Goudling adding 15 and 14 points respectively.

“It’s always tough to play a game, travel four hours by mini van, then play against one of the best teams in the league,” Spartans head coach Vern Robateau said. “But that’s the league and every team has to deal with travel. We just don’t do a very good job of that right now, but we’re getting better.”

In the earlier games, the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans won both their road games against the Albury/Wodonga Lady Bandits 71 – 57 and the Frankston Lady Blues 68 – 58 cementing themselves in sixth place on the SEABL Ladder.

After two weeks on the road, the Spartans and Lady Spartans return home to the Carina Basketball Stadium this Saturday night.

At 6pm the Lady Spartans take on the Launceston Tornadoes and welcomes back a former Spartans Championship Representative Michaela Dalgliesh, while the Spartan men play the Hobart Chargers at 7:30pm.

SEABL MEN MID WEEK PREVIEWS – ROUND 17

Geelong vs AIS

Friday 27th June – 7:30pm

After grabbing first position in round 15, the Supercats have tumbled to second position again after a disappointing road loss at Hobart last weekend. With only three games over the next four rounds, the Supercats have consolidated a top two position but will need to win all three games to remain in the hunt for the top placing and home court advantage.

Mt Gambier vs Nunawading

Friday 27th June – 8:00pm

Nunawading need to win all remaining games to have any hope of grabbing a finals berth this season. The Spectres have been inconsistent all season, and coach Sedale Threat will need a winning team to show up at The Icehouse this weekend. This is the last road game for the Spectres this season, and all will be keen to finish on a successful note with their second victory this year against Mt Gambier. Pioneers Chris Mason and Dallas Jeffree play their 100th SEABL game this week and will be keen to celebrate with a victory.

AIS vs Bendigo

Saturday 28th June – 7:00pm

After a disastrous season start, Bendigo are still in the hunt for a finals berth. Two victories this weekend in the nation’s capital may catapult them up the ladder. Coach Larkins had seven players score double digits last week against Canberra. With so many players capable of a big game, the Braves will need to play well as a team at the defensive end to counter the AIS.

Southern Districts vs Hobart

Saturday 28th June – 8:00pm

Anthony Stewart is averaging 24.3pts in his past three games, well above his season average. His increased offensive productivity has been a huge benefit to the Hobart Chargers and with two victories this weekend will consolidate third position and a home final. Stewart will be tested this week as the Spartans have a number of quality young guards (Goulding, Gibson and Carter) capable of containing his efforts.

Albury/Wodonga vs NW Tasmania

Saturday 28th June – 8:00pm

The Bandits will be looking to celebrate the clubs 25th year anniversary with a home victory. Albury/Wodonga has a gala dinner this Friday to celebrate the clubs rich history, and will be keen to finish celebrations with a much needed victory. Club legend Allen McCowan will also play his 300th game for the club, and will be keen to secure a win in his milestone game.

Frankston vs Ballarat

Saturday 28th June – 8:00pm

A victory in this game is vital to both teams for various reasons. Frankston need to remain undefeated for the remainder of the season to finish on top the South ladder and earn home court advantage in the Finals. Ballarat need to win to stay in East Conference finals contention after a disappointing 0-2 result last weekend. The battle in the back court between Blues Harms (22.3ppg, 4.0apg) and Miners Henderson (15.5ppg, 4.1apg) will be a fantastic duel.

Kilsyth vs Ballarat

Sunday 29th June – 2:30pm

Kilsyth are currently in fifth position, two games behind the fourth placed AIS and need to win each remaining game of the season to have any hope of securing a finals berth this season. Cobras guard Gerard Leonard (18.2ppg) has averaged 28.75pts in his past four games and has been the team’s major offensive threat since the loss of import Malvik.

Knox vs Hobart

Sunday 29th June – 2:00pm

Hobart has struggled at Knox Converse Stadium in recent seasons, and the Raiders hold an 11-5 head to head record. Massingale and Strong were outstanding last week, and will be a major defensive assignment for Hobart this week. However Knox has quality players in Payne, Carrol, Siegle and Healey that can step up and produce a quality game if needed. Chargers guard Mark Banovic will be keen to secure a victory in his 300th SEABL game.

Canberra vs Bendigo

Sunday 29th June – 1:00pm

Bendigo recorded a 96-83 victory last week, and will be fairly confident of recording another win this week. Head to head between the two teams is locked at 10-10, but the Braves have only won 2 games at Belconnen. Braves Chris Novak has been playing quality basketball of late and he will need to produce another high quality game at both ends of the floor for his team to be successful on the road this week.

Nunawading vs NW Tasmania

Sunday 29th June – 2:30pm

NW Tasmania has had great success on the road at Nunawading in recent years, holding a 4-1 head to head advantage. NW Tasmania also currently hold a five game winning streak against Nunawading including a 111-98 victory in round 12. The return of David Biwer from injury to the Spectres line-up will give Nunawading an extra defensive presence needed to contain the Thunder big man Brad Nuckles (23.3ppg, 15.2rpg).

Spartans Defeat Tasmania

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Spartans and the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans have had a successful weekend in the SEABL round 17 clash against the Tasmanians last weekend.

The Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans snuck home in a thriller against the Launceston Tornadoes 69 – 65. The Tornadoes traveled to Brisbane with a former Lady Spartans championship player, Michaela Dalgleish but it was Lady Spartans center Rachel Pryor who stole the show with a career high 23 points and 7 rebounds to lead all scorers.

For the visitors, Natalie Hurst just missed out on a triple double with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 12 assists with Peta Sinclair and Crista Hays scoring 21 and 20 points respectively.

The win extends the Lady Spartans win streak to 3 and sits them in sixth position on the SEABL ladder.

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Spartans followed their lady counterparts with a hard fought win over the Hobart Chargers 112 – 96 without superstar guard Adam Gibson who was rested due to an ankle injury suffered during midweek training.

As a result, the opening quarter was a close affair with scores locked at 26 points each. The Spartans then took a slender 3 point lead into the main break, but the usual lethargic third quarter blues from the Spartans has been addressed as they poured in a massive 34 points and kept the visiting Chargers to 23 points and that’s where the game was won.

For the visitors, Anthony Stewart led the way with 27 points, American import Charles Long added 20 points and Mark Nash chipped in with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

For the Spartans, the skipper, Matty Edmonds narrowly missed a triple double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 7 turnovers. His front court partners Greg Vanderjagt and Jeff Morton added 19 and 15 points respectively with Vanderjagt also grabbing 18 rebounds.

However, it was the Chris Goudling show, as he sliced and diced through the Chargers defence en route to 32 points, shooting 52% from the field and 42% from the three point line.

“Chris was exceptional tonight. We really needed him to step up in Gibbo’s (Adam Gibson) absence and he did it,” Spartans head coach Vern Robateau said.

“The team really pulled together when the chips are down. Guys like Zac (Carter) and Morty (Jeff Morton) especially lifted their games with the extra opportunities coming their way during to injuries,” Robateau added.

With only two home mens games remaining this season, the Spartans can push as high as second position on the SEABL ladder if they win them both.

The Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans will have to rely on some team above them to lose but are a slight chance of also making the playoffs for the very first time in the SEABL campaign.

The Lady Spartans enjoy two weekends off, however the Arrow Caravans & Towbars Spartans will play the Bendigo Braves this Friday night at the Carina Basketball Stadium 7pm tip off.

Spartans Farewell ‘Gibbo’

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Spartans will farewell superstar guard Adam Gibson this Saturday night at the Carina Basketball Stadium when they play the North West Tasmania Thunder at 7:30pm.

Gibson who signed to play with the Spartans in 2006 has become a part of the furniture, regularly helping out around the stadium, assisting with score bench and cleaning during Junior Championships, taking the time to watch junior domestic fixtures and just generally filling the gaps where needed.

However, due to the demise of the Brisbane Bullets, Gibson has signed a new contract with the South Dragons in Melbourne to enable him to continue to play in the National Basketball League.

Gibson, an extremely popular person amongst the kids, will be sorely missed in the Brisbane community. Making the NBL at such a young age and tasting success quickly is something young aspiring basketballers could look up to towards Gibson, and instantly felt they had a rapport with him.

“We are very sad to lose a player the caliber of Adam,” Spartans General Manager Allan Ladewig said. “He’s not only a very good player, but a very good person to have around the club. He is someone we will be looking to try and have return during the NBL off season.”

Gibson will leave Brisbane on Monday, 14 July but will return on the weekend for his last game at Carina Stadium and a bumper crowd is expected to farewell the superstar NBL Championship point guard.

“We encourage everyone to come on out and wish Gibbo the best,” Spartans President Charles Ellis said. “He’s been a great ambassador for basketball not only here at Spartans but in the entire Brisbane Community.”

“It doesn’t matter what basketball association you’re from, I’m inviting everyone to come on out and wish Gibbo the best of luck in his future endeavors,” he added

The Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans play in the earlier game at 6pm with the men tipping off at 7:30pm.

MEDIA RELEASE

15 July 2008

SEABL PLAYOFF POSITIONS STILL UNKNOWN

The final eight teams for the 2008 SEABL Men Playoffs will not be determined till the completion of the final round of the regular season. The only thing currently assured though is the four teams that will contest the South Conference Title.

The top four teams in the South have been finalised with only the minor premiership between Frankston and Geelong left to be decided while in the East the make up of the post season will depend on numerous results in round 20.

Results in the final round in both conferences will determine where teams eventually finish on the ladder, these results will determine who secures the second chance and who hosts the important knockout 1st semi final. Remarkably the final round of games sees all but one fixture having an effect on the final standings in each conference. Only the Nunawading versus Kilsyth clash having no relevance on the final positions for the post season.

EAST MEN

In the East Conference the Knox Raiders head up the Hume Highway with seven players to try and secure the minor premiership and the double chance. The Raiders have been struck with serious bad luck in recent weeks with sharp shooter and MVP contender CJ Massingale injuring his ankle, veteran and team leader Glenn Siegle dislocating his shoulder and sixth man Paul McMaster suffering from a calf injury.

Current ladder leaders NW Tasmania have an arduous double game weekend to consolidate a double chance, but should they lose both games could drop all the way down to fourth position and lose the right to host a SEABL final. Should the Thunder win both matches and Knox defeat Albury/Wodonga, the Thunder will finish second on head to head results, and travel to Knox for the second semi final.

Since joining the league last year the Southern Districts will participate in the SEABL Playoffs for the second straight year, but the final position is yet to be determined. The Spartans could finish as high as second, but as low as fourth should they lose to the visiting NW Tasmania this weekend.

Having won six of their past eight matches Bendigo have sprinted into third position after a disappointing season start, that saw them languishing on the bottom of the ladder for many weeks. Import Dustin Bremerman has finally found his shooting range, Chris Novak is playing consistent basketball and Cameron Rigby is providing the team with reliable numbers also. A victory this week against the under strength Hobart squad could see the Braves move up as high as first, should Knox and NW Tasmania lose matches this week as well. However should the Braves late season surge finish with a loss, the Braves will will need to hope that Hobart defeat Ballarat the next day to confirm their finals position.

Ballarat returned from the Apple Isle in round 19 with a disappointing 0-2 record and now face the likely prospect of missing the finals despite sitting in the top four for the majority of the season. Ballarat need to defeat Hobart on Sunday and hope the Braves lose the previous night to steal the last finals position. This is the only chance the Miners have of gaining the fourth position. As Hobart have decided to leave four of the teams starting five behind in Hobart, a Bendigo victory is highly likely and the Miners finals hopes finished.

The final placing’s may not be known till 5 pm Sunday which makes for a very dramatic finish to what has been a highly competitive season in the very strong East Conference.

SOUTH MEN

The South Men’s conference is already done and dusted with one round of competition to play. Frankston, Geelong, Hobart and Australian Institute of Sport make up the fantastic four and things are set for what will be a crackerjack finals series.

Frankston need to win one of their two games this weekend in the Nations Capital to consolidate the minor premiership and host Geelong Supercats on Saturday 26th July in a highly critical game as the winner will earn the right to host the Conference Championship two weeks later. We suggest you book your tickets early for this match as the full house sign could go up very early. Both teams are stacked with talent, however Geelong hold the season series on head to head results.

In the 1st semi final Australian Institute of Sport, back in the finals for the fist time since 2006 will travel to the Apple Isle for a clash with the highly experienced Hobart Chargers. Marty Clarke started the season with a squad of inexperienced yet highly talented 18 year olds, but the boys have shown massive improvemen all year and have finished the season with some impressive victories including a 40pt victory at the Arena in round 17 over the Supercats.

WOMEN

The SEABL Women finals race is also still wide open, with four of the six games played having an impact on the finals outcome. None of the top five teams positions are safe, making round twenty a very important round for all concerned.

Nunawading need to defeat Launceston on Saturday night to secure the Minor Premiership, and host the second semi final against either Bendigo or Launceston. Should Nunawading lose to Launceston and Bendigo defeat Frankston, then the Lady Braves will snatch the number one position.

However should Launceston defeat Nunawading and Ballarat on the road this weekend, and Bendigo defeat Frankston the top three positions change dramatically as Bendigo snatch first position, Launceston move into second position and Nunawading tumble down to third position.

The battle for the fourth and final position is intense with both Ballarat and Kilsyth needing to score a victory this week to secure their playoff dream. Destiny is in the hands of Kilsyth, as a victory on Sunday against NW Tasmania will consolidate their position as they hold head to head advantage against Ballarat. The Lady Miners however need to defeat Launceston on Saturday to have any hope of making the finals. If they defeat the Tornadoes and Kilsyth lose to the Thunder, then the Lady Miners will snatch the fourth position.

The schedule for the first round of the 2008 SEABL Playoffs will be finalised and released Monday 21st July. Please check www.seabl.com.au for information regarding tip off.

Caught my first SEABL game at Districts last night. Not a bad setup, I like the new seating. Grazza Harding and Snacks you can still both rock it.

Chris Goulding has come a long way as a player and had a good gae. Gibbo easily MVP with Vanderjagt not far behind. Peni and Matty both had soid patches. A shame the bench didnt get thrown on in the last few minutes.

Spartans into SEABL Finals
The Arrow Caravans and Towbars Spartans have stormed into the SEABL finals for the second year in a row after defeating the North West Tasmania Thunder 116 – 99 at Carina Basketball Stadium last night.
In front of a capacity crowd, who came to bid Adam Gibson farewell, the Spartans shrugged off a lethargic first half to storm home with a massive 39 point third quarter and it was all down hill from there.
The Thunder mounted a couple of runs but the Spartans held off in the end lead by the man of the moment, Adam Gibson with 34 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists but it was Peni Nasalo who walked away with the post game MVP award with a solid 21 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 7 steals.
Center Greg Vanderjagt and Chris Goulding also joined the party with 22 and 27 points respectively with Vanderjagt also grabbing 15 rebounds in an all round team effort.
“It was a great way to end the regular season,” Spartans head coach Vern Robateau said. “We wanted to finish strong and head into the playoffs on a winning note.”
It is still unsure who the Spartans will meet in round one of the SEABL playoffs or whether they’ll play at home or away. It all hinges on the North West Tasmania Thunder v Kilsyth Cobras game this afternoon in Kilsyth.
A loss to the Thunder could see the Spartans end up in third position and will host the North West Tasmania Thunder in a rematch of last night's game. However, a win to the Thunder could see the Spartans end the season in fourth position meaning they will travel to play the Bendigo Braves next weekend, a team they have never beaten in the history of SEABL.
Either way, both games will be an elimination knock out situation. The team that loses will mean the end of the season for 2008.
One thing is for sure, the Spartans men will feature in the 2008 SEABL playoffs in some capacity.
In the earlier game, the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans have ended their season on a winning note defeating the North West Lady Thunder 78 – 45.
Shona O’Bree and Holly Smith lead the way with 18 points each and Rachel Pryor adding 12 points and 9 rebounds.
Despite starting the 2008 season with a sluggish 2 wins from 10 games, the Lady Spartans turned the corner and ended the season winning 11 of their last 13 games which included a 7 game mid season winning streak.
“We’re probably one player short of making our first finals appearance,” Spartans General Manager Allan Ladewig said. “That is something we are going to address for next season right now, in order to give the playoffs a real shake,” he added.

AIS UNABLE TO PLAY SEABL FINALS

The Australian Institute of Sport have officially advised the South East Australian Basketball League office that they will be unable to participate in the upcoming SEABL Finals.

Due to exceptional circumstances, the Australian Institute of Sport finds no alternative but to withdraw from the SEABL Finals in 2008.

The majority of the AIS team will be representing Australia in the final match of the Oceania World Championship Qualifying series against New Zealand on the morning of 3 August 2008 in Adelaide. Unfortunately, the Emus team, comprised mainly of AIS scholarship holders, returned from the William Jones International tournament in Taiwan more than usually fatigued and carrying a number of injuries.

AIS Head Coach Martin Clarke said “the participation of the AIS in the final series of the SEABL would be both detrimental to the welfare of his players and not in the best’s interests of the league. In the current state of the team’s fatigue and health, the prospect of the team contesting the possible preliminary final in Melbourne after playing an Oceania Qualifying match on the same day could lead to the team withdrawing at late notice.’ Coach Clarke feels that the league would be better served if the AIS withdrew now and the clubs were able to make other arrangements.

The AIS was very reluctant to withdraw from the SEABL finals series at this point of the season. However, the AIS treat its duty of care to all of its athletes and particularly young scholarship holders very seriously.

SEABL General Manager Mark Chivers had the following to say in regards to the AIS situation. “Along with the help of Basketball Australia, Frankston and Geelong, the SEABL office worked tirelessly to enable the AIS to have every opportunity to participate in the Finals. The SEABL appreciate the difficulty the AIS would have had in making such a decision. It is disappointing for the AIS to miss the Finals again due to Basketball Australia commitments, but understand that the AIS is a development program for the highly successful Australian Emus program and wish them all the success at the upcoming Oceania Qualifiers.”

The AIS have been a member of the SEABL since 1982 and were East Men Champions in 2002. As the fifth placed team at the end of the regular season in the South Conference Kilsyth Cobras will take the final position in the 2008 SEABL South Men Finals structure.

The Australian Institute of Sport has been a highly successful development program for Australian Basketball, with recent NBA draftee Nathan Jawai playing for the program in along with current Milwaukee Buck and Australian Boomer Andrew Bogut. The likes of Luc Longley, Brad Newley, Shane Heal and David Anderson have all played at the AIS at some stage of their career.

Braves End Spartans Season

The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Spartans 2008 SEABL season has ended in round one of the finals against their “bogey” team the Bendigo Braves who once again defeated the Spartans 121 – 108 in Bendigo last Saturday night.

The Spartans burst out of the blocks early with a 7 – 0 run before two consecutive triples from Braves import Dustin Bremerman quickly reeled the Spartans back and ended the first quarter 29 – 28 Braves.

However, the Spartans lost their defensive ways in the second quarter allowing the Braves to pour in a massive 36 points and take a 10 point lead 65 – 55 at the main break. Despite a tight and relatively close second half, the damage was already done and the Braves sharp three-point shooting once again was the difference shooting 55% from three point range.

“I don’t know what it is, but you (Bendigo Braves) guys always shoot well against us,” Spartans head coach Vern Robateau said at the post game function.

Braves import Dustin Bremerman was the chief destroyer once again with 28 points including 6 three pointers. Chris Novak and Chris Hogan added 23 and 22 points respectively.

For the Spartans, the talented backcourt trio carried them throughout the night, with superstar guard Adam Gibson walking away with the post game MVP award scoring 28 points and 8 rebounds but it was emerging guard Chris Goulding who lead everyone with 36 points including 5 three pointers and Peni Nasalo added 18 points.

The Spartans frontcourt combined for 24 of the teams 41 total rebounds but couldn’t fire on the offensive end with Matty Edmonds and center Greg Vanderjagt unable to find any shooting rhythm. Both struggled combining for 7 – 21 from the field.

“We struggled offensively from our frontcourt,” Robateau said. “It was great to have them rebound so well together but we needed them to put the ball in the cup also,” he added.

The Braves extend their winning record over the Spartans to five in a row, with the Spartans never beating them in SEABL history and will now have to wait until season 2009 to have another crack at it.

The Spartans will regroup this week with coaches and players from both men and womens teams meeting with the Spartans front office hierarchy and begin their building plans for their 2009 teams.

One this for certain is that head coach Vern Robateau will not be returning to the Spartans after taking up a coaching position in the USA and will be leaving the country on August 7, 2008.

“We would like to publically thank Vern for coaching the Spartans this season,” Spartans President Charles Ellis said. “He has certainly done our club very proud and we wish him every success in the USA,” he added.

Rumors have already been flying with regards to players and coaching movements for the Spartans men and Lady Spartans with more announcements expected within the next couple of weeks.

Pre season training for both Lady Spartans and Spartans mens teams will begin in November 2008.

SEABL AWARD NOMINEES ANNOUNCED

As per previous years the coach and captain from each club have determined the winners of the prestigious end of season awards in each respective Conference. Following is a detailed schedule of when each respective award will be announced. .

Wednesday 30th July
Statistic Awards

Friday 1st August
Defensive Player of the Year

Monday 4th August
U/21 Australian Youth Players

Wednesday 6th August
Coach of the Year

Thursday 7th August
All SEABL Team

Friday 8th August
Most Valuable Player

EAST MEN
2006 South MVP Runner Up CJ Massingale (Knox) has had a stellar season leading the league in scoring and is favourite to receive the Most Valuable Player Award, but Zlatko Todorovski (Canberra), Jamal Brown (Ballarat) and NW Tasmania Import Brad Nuckles have performed remarkably well and are also in contention.

Ben Armstrong (NW Tasmania) and Nunawading Spectres Shane McDonald have both had brilliant seasons and deserve a spot on the All SEABL East Men team for 2008. But there is so much talent in the East Men’s Conference capable of a spot, with the likes of Adam Gibson (Southern Districts), Dustin Bremerman (Bendigo), and Glenn Baird (Canberra) all capable of winning the accolade.

For the U/21 Australian Youth Player, Chris Goulding (Southern Districts), NW Tasmania Thunders’ Lee McGaffin and Raiders’ Ben Healey are the only significant performers in 2008, and the award will be decided between these three players.

NW Tasmania Thunder coach Mark Radford is a strong chance to take out his third Conference Coach of the Year award; however Shane Mathison (Ballarat) and Wayne Larkins (Bendigo) have also raised their hands. But with a conference best 15-11 record, Knox Raiders mentor Graham Longstaff is surely the favourite.

SOUTH MEN
Conference leading Scorer Dallas Jeffree (Mt Gambier) has had a sensational season and is a contender for the Most Valuable Player honour; and will be under plenty of pressure from Frankston duo Rob Kampman & David Gruber. Joe Werner (Kilsyth) has had a consistent season, and must be high on the list. All these players are in contention for a position on the All SEABL South Men Team, along with Hobart forward Chuck Long, Andrew Rice (Albury/Wodonga) and Supercats dynamo Nathan Herbert.

The Australian Institute of Sport players are the only contenders for the U/21 Australian Youth Player award and with an array of talent in the team, the award will be close. Matthew Dellevadova has had a consistent season, Jorden Page tormented many opposition guards, Brock Motum received a Player of the Week recognition and Mitchell Young has been a consistent performer. Patrick Mills, Brad Newley and Andrew Bogut all past AIS scholarship holders have all won this award in the past, and all of the above current AIS squad will be keen to add their name to the list of previous winners.

Geelong coach Mark Leader has had another standout season, steering his team to another top two placing, making him a prime candidate for the Coach of the Year award. However Leader has strong competition from Bill Runchey (Frankston), who has led his team to the minor premiership and Marty Clarke (AIS) who guided a very young team to a fourth place finish.

WOMEN
Launceston Tornadoes’ duo Crista Hays and Nat Hurst, as well as Gabrielle Richards (Bendigo Lady Braves) are candidates for this year’s Most Valuable Player. NW Tasmania point guard dynamo Kristen Veal has also had an outstanding year and could also win the SEABL MVP trophy. Jenna O’Hea (Nunawading), and Kilsyth Lady Cobras Sarah Parsons & Clare Papavs are in the hunt to rate a mention for both the MVP and a spot on the All-SEABL Women’s Team honours. The Womens league was highly successful again this year and a number of players are worthy of the MVP recognition. Michelle Musselwhite (Ballarat) and Caitlin Cunningham (Nunawading) are also worth of a mention.

Sarah Graham (Knox) is a favourite for the U/21 Australian Youth Player of the Year. Other candidates are Catherine Guest (Launceston), Alex Duck (Albury/Wodonga) and under rated youngster Rachel Pryor from Southern Districts Lady Spartans.

With the Nunawading Spectres securing the minor premiership, head coach Mike Bainbridge is a prime candidate for the Coach of the Year award. Others who have staked a claim include multiple winner Bernie Harrower (Bendigo), and Tim Hays (Launceston). Kilsyth Lady Cobras Jason Knight deserves recognition for guiding his team to fourth position and will be a contender for the prestigious award.

SEABL SOUTH MEN ELIMINATION FINAL PREVIEWS

“St Laurence” Geelong Supercats VS “Oasis” Hobart Chargers

Sunday 3rd August 2:00pm @ Geelong Arena

Referees – Jason Kelly & Stephen O’Shea

With home court advantage and an 8-3 career record over their opponents at The Geelong Arena, Geelong will go into the match as favourites. After a shock departure from the Chargers in the pre-season, Supercats star recruit Daniel George (16.5ppg, 13.1rpg,) will be determined to guide Geelong into their fourth consecutive Grand Final. George destroyed his former club in round 11 with 22pts and 10rebs, but struggled in the round 16 contest. His combination in the paint with fellow front court teammates Brad Bridgewater and Shawn Myers (19.3ppg, 9.4rpg, 1.4apg) is sure to test the Chargers frontcourt of Mark Nash (12.4ppg, 12.2rpg) and Corey Davie.

Chargers guard rotation of Anthony Stewart (22.0ppg, 5.8rpg, 5.5apg), Mark Banovic (16.5ppg, 5.3apg) and Robert Inches (14.9ppg, 6.0rpg, 3.1apg) is talented, and provides 53% of the Chargers offensive output. The ball is passed through the hands of these three players on a consistent basis and the Chargers hopes of success lie in the hands of the experienced trio productivity in the game. However the Supercats have a talented guard trio of Braith Cox (15.3ppg, 5.8apg), Jarrod Leonard and Jamie Medved (11.6ppg, 2.5apg) whom with over 740 games experience are capable of containing the Chargers threesome.

League MVP contender Nathan Herbert (23.3ppg, 5.8rpg, 2.8apg), is having a sensational season and will be a major threat to the Chargers chances. Herbert has an array of skills and at age 23 is still improving his game and will give the Chargers many defensive headaches. Herbert has been a key contributor in both games this season averaging 24pts, 9.5rebs and 4.5ass. Athletic import Chuck Long (21.5ppg, 10.1rpg, 2.2spg) is the only Chargers player capable of containing his talents. Long needs to be tenacious on defence to trouble Herbert, and Hobart coach Dan Krebs will be hoping he can contain Herbert to a single digit performance.

Geelong has a fantastic 12-1 playoffs record at home, and are currently on a six game winning streak at home in the playoffs including victory in the past three Conference Grand Finals. The Chargers have struggled in games at The Arena and have not recorded a win since 13th July 2003, losing their past five matches. Having lost at this stage last year in disappointing fashion Hobart will be determined to achieve their pre-season goal of a Grand Final appearance.

SEABL EAST MEN ELIMINATION FINAL PREVIEWS

“Searon Buck” NW Tasmania Thunder VS Bendigo “Telstra” Braves

Saturday 2nd August 7:30pm @ Devonport Stadium

Referees – Kellie Knight & Martin Parker

Bendigo will go into the contest as favourites, having defeated NW Tasmania twice already this season and winning 10 of their 13 games to end the season. In fact the Braves have successfully recorded an 11-10 record at Devonport Stadium and have won their past four matches against NW Tasmania at home. The Thunder has not recorded a victory at Devonport Stadium against Bendigo since 17th July, 2004.

The Thunder MVP favourite Brad Nuckles (22.2ppg, 15.4rpg, 2.1bpg) has averaged 25pts and 21rebs in the two games this season and his efforts will need to be contained this week by Bendigo. Braves under rated star Chris Novak will likely get the task of containing his talents, but Braves coach Wayne Larkins also has the luxury of NBL Free Agent Cameron Rigby (17.7ppg, 6.5rpg) to help Novak resist the Nuckles domination. Nuckles was disappointing last week against Knox due to the flu he contracted during the week, and will need to play his best basketball this week against the in form Braves. .

The match-up in the backcourt between Braves Warren Randall (10.1ppg, 4.2rpg, 4.1apg) and Thunder Ben Armstrong (19.3ppg, 3.4rpg, 5.1apg) will be a highlight, as both are valuable members to their team. Both will be hell bent on having a strong performance which will benefit their team. Both play different styles of game as Ben is a key offensive threat, and his team rely heavily on his production. A lot will be expected of Randall to contain the productivity of Armstrong, if the Braves are to secure the victory. Ben is struggling with a calf strain at the moment, but is highly capable of destroying any team on any given night.

This is the first time the Thunder and Bendigo have met in Finals and Bendigo will be keen for the victory to earn their fourth straight Grand Final appearance. NW Tasmania has a 15-3 all time playoff record at Devonport and will be determined to record another win this week and have another crack at Knox.

2008 U/21 AUSTRALIAN YOUTH PLAYER OF THE YEAR

This award recognizes improvement and development in players throughout the 2008 regular season. To be eligible to win this award, players must have Australian Basketball Nationality and be under the age of 21 at the conclusion of the ABA season. It is not a requirement to be a first year player.

BROCK MOTUM of the Australian Institute of Sport has been named the winner of the 2008 SEABL South Men Australian Youth Player of the Year continuing a great AIS tradition. CHRIS GOULDING of the Southern Districts Spartans and Albury/Wodonga Lady Bandits ALEX DUCK has also been rewarded, earning the Award in their respective conferences.

In his first season in the SEABL, Queenslander BROCK MOTUM wins the South Men Australian U/21 Youth Player of the Year Award. Brock has been a valuable contributor for the AIS this year and finished the season averaging 15.2pts (17th), 5rebs, 1ass, 1blk and 1.stls. 17 year old Brock Motum received his first Player of the Week in round 17 and was outstanding in the AIS shock 41pt thrashing of league powerhouse Geelong Supercats. Brock recorded 29pts@71% including 3/3 (100%) from behind three point arc, 9rebs and 1ass. The following day Brock returned home to the AIS and recorded 22pts@62%, 6rebs, 2ass and 2stls, helping the AIS record a 109-105 victory over Bendigo.

Motum helped the AIS to a 13-13 regular season record, grabbing fourth position, but were unable to compete in the Finals due to Basketball Australia commitments with the Emus U/19 program. Motum received a total of 22 votes and is the ninth AIS player to receive this award, behind current Boomers Andrew Bogut, David Anderson, Patrick Mills and Brad Newley.

CHRIS GOULDING received 27 out of a possible 36, including 7 first place votes from a panel of coaches and captains from all SEABL East Teams and was by far the standout youth player in the League. Goulding, whom played with the Brisbane Bullets NBL team and was a member of the Australian Emus at the World Championships last year is the first Spartans player to win the award.

19 year old Chris Goulding stamped himself as a future star in week one earning Player of the Week honours. Goulding averaged 30pts in the Spartans first two games and gave the rest of the league a massive warning that he was going to be a force this year. He scored 30+ points on nine occasions with a season best 43pts in round 18 vs Bendigo. Chris finished the season with averages of 24.0pts, 6.2rebs and 1.6ass. His best game came in round 16 at Albury/Wodonga with 33pts@56%, 11rebs, and 3ass.

Chris finished the season as the second best scorer averaging 24.0 per game and averaged nearly 40.5mins per game, helping the Spartans to a fourth place finish. Due to the collapse of the Brisbane Bullets NBL program, Chris is without an NBL team but is destined to have a big future in the SEABL in years to come.

ALEX DUCK wins the SEABL Women Australian U/21 Youth Player of the Year Award in her second season in the SEABL. Alex has been the major contributor for the Lady Bandits this year and finished the season averaging 15.9pts, 7.0rebs, 2.3ass and led the league with 2.9stls.

Due to a mass exodus of players in the off-season, Alex was the franchise player, and needed to contribute on a nightly basis for her team to be successful. 17 year old Alex showed a huge amount of maturity and leadership for such a youngster and earned a position on the SEABL Team of the month twice during the season.

Duck, a member of the NSW Country U/20 team earlier this year scored 20+pts on 8 occasions with her best game versus Launceston in round 6 with 29pts, 5rebs, 3ass and a season best 10stls. SEABL EAST MEN GRAND FINAL PREVIEW

Knox Ford Raiders VS Bendigo “Telstra” Braves

Saturday 9th August 8:00pm @ Knox Converse Stadium

Referees – Chris Reid & Jason Kelly

In 2006 Knox Raiders came from third place on the ladder to defeat Bendigo Braves in the Grand Final on home soil. Bendigo who finished third this year gets their chance for revenge this weekend as they have defeated Southern Districts and NW Tasmania to reach their fourth consecutive conference Grand Final.

Both matches between the two teams have been tight contests with the home team victorious. Knox Raiders have many injuries to key players and League MVP favourite CJ Massingale injured his ankle in round 18 but will likely play this week. Experienced captain Glen Siegle dislocated his shoulder in week 19, and it is uncertain if he will be able to take the court. He is a major contributor for this team and coach Graham Longstaff and his medical team will do everything possible to get him on the court this Saturday night.

Massingale has tormented the Braves in both games this season with 26pts and 6rebs in round 10, and then produced 37pts, 6rebs and 3ass in the round 15 loss. The ankle injury may restrict him from slashing to the basket, which has been an added dimension to his game this year, but he has shown he can shot the rock from behind the three point arc and will be determined to guide his team to his second Championship in three years.

Braves import sharp shooter Dustin Bremerman started the season slowly and many fans expected him to take a quick return flight back home to America. But coach Wayne Larkins stuck to his guns and slowly let him feel his groove and Bremerman hasn’t let his coach down in recent weeks. Dustin has averaged 25.2ppg in his teams past 17 games which the Braves have won 13 times. Bremerman scored a league season best 56pts in round 18, but struggled with the Raiders tight defence in round ten with only 5pts.

Knox Raiders have won three SEABL Championships, but have yet to showcase a victory in front of their adoring fans since 1991, having won both Grand Finals in 1996 and 2006 on the road. Bendigo is aiming for back to back Conference Championships have secured the South Title against Kilsyth last year. The Braves will be looking to clinch their fourth SEABL Championship having secured the Title in 2005 and 1990.

Likely matchups that will impress the crowd:

Sean Carroll (10.1ppg, 4.2rpg, 4.4apg) vs Warren Randall (9.7ppg, 4.1rpg, 3.9apg)

Sean Carroll was outstanding in the Raiders heart stopping semi final victory against NW Tasmania. With injuries to key players Sean will need to step up and provide a strong offensive game. Randall is well known for his defence, finishing fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting this season. His main task this week is to contain the speed and passing skills of Raiders point guard Carroll, but yet control his teams offence as well.

Lester Strong (15.0ppg, 10.0rpg, 2.2bpg) vs Cameron Rigby (17.8ppg, 6.6rpg, 2.6apg)

Both play a crucial role for their respective teams and this week both will need to lift their defensive intensity, as they strive to contain their opponents’ opportunities. Strong’s athleticism and enthusiasm lifts the Raiders and he needs to play a vital role in this week’s game. Cameron has shown this season that he is capable of a high scoring game if left open, a factor Strong will needs to be prepared for.

2008 Head to Head – Raiders 98-96 at Knox (rd10)

Braves 111-107 at Bendigo (rd15)

Winner of this game will play the South Men Champion in the SEABL Championship game

next Saturday night at The Geelong Arena.

Hobart came from 14pts behind at three quarter time to defeat three times Conference Champion Geelong at The Arena in last weeks elimination final. This was the first win at The Arena since 2001, and the Chargers will need to overcome another long losing streak to secure the Championship this week.

Frankston currently hold a six game winning streak against Hobart at Frankston Basketball Stadium, as the Chargers last recorded a victory in July 1999. Hobart have played 13 times at Frankston and have only recorded a victory twice. This will be a major concern for the Chargers coaching staff, but Dan Krebs team showed last week that they will fight all the way to the end.

Banovic and Stewart were outstanding last week, with Banovic scoring 29pts in the last quarter to guide his team to victory. Banovic has never scored consecutive 40+ games but is a proven shooter and can change a game quickly if not contained. Frankston veteran David Hankin is fully capable of controlling his talents.

David Gruber (25.3ppg, 13.7rpg, 1.7bpg) has been the standout performer all season for Frankston and is a major contender for the Most Valuable Player Award. Gruber enjoys playing against the Tassie team as he averages 24.2pts, 13.7rebs, 2ass and 3blks in ten games against the Chargers. Mark Nash is the most credentialed player capable of containing Gruber’s talents, but Nash has had a poor year by his standards and will need to produce a near perfect game to withstand the Gruber onslaught.

Hobart had five players play 40mins+ in the Final last week against Geelong and only two other players received valuable minutes. This could be a factor in the contest, because if any of the Chargers’ four key players (Stewart, Banovic, Long and Nash) get into foul trouble, Coach Dan Krebs will have to go to his bench. His bench players may lack confidence to produce quality production due to the limited minutes they have played throughout the season.

Both clubs have won numerous SEABL Championships, however Frankston has not won a Title since 2000 and Runchey and all involved with Frankston will be hoping to end the drought this weekend. Frankston is looking to become the first team to win six Championships having secured glory in 2000, 1998, 1995, 1993 and 1992.

Likely matchups that will impress the crowd:

Andrew Harms(21.5ppg, 5.4rpg, 4.1apg) vs Robert Inches (14.7ppg, 6.1rpg, 3.1apg)

This is one match-up not to be missed and will play a major role in determining the outcome of the game. Robert is well known for his ‘in-your-face defence’ and his efforts will play a pivotal role in the Chargers’ success. His opponent, Andrew Harms is a proven talent and is capable of a big game if given the opportunity. .

Rob Kampman (22.7ppg, 10.7rpg, 2.1pg) vs Chuck Long (20.9ppg, 10.2rpg, 3.5apg)

Both players have been a key to their respective teams’ success this season, and both will need to produce another high quality game this week. Chuck may just be the favourite to win this contest, as he has proved to be a major contributor for his team in all two previous encounters and averages 24.5pts, 11.0rebs, 3.0ass and 2.0stls against Frankston this season. Chuck has been consistent on offence, but Coach Krebs will be keen for another a strong defensive game.

Hobart (58) 102

(Banovic 33pts, Stewart 25pts 5ass, Long 16pts)

The game had 22 lead changes, with the Chargers out by as much as 14pts at one stage in the third quarter, but the Blues clawed their way back and had a 1 pt lead at three quarter time.

In a see-sawing final quarter, Blues imports David Gruber (25 points, 22 rebounds) and Rob Kampman (30 points) were outstanding for the home team, whilst Mark Nash and Mark Banovic were doing most of the damage for Hobart.

The Blues gained a 5 point break with less than 2 minutes to go in the game, but Hobart had the answers and with 20 seconds left in the game, Mark Nash hit a three point shot to put Hobart up by two.

After a Frankston time-out, the final play for the Blues was unsuccessful and they were forced to put Hobart on the line to regain possession.

SEABL MEN CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PREVIEW

“Oasis” Hobart Chargers VS Knox Ford Raiders

Saturday 16th August 7:30pm @ The Geelong Arena

Referees – Daniel Banik, Chris Reid & Jason Kelly

Hobart brings a talented line up to this match high on confidence after two brilliant unexpected victories on the road against the leagues best teams during the regular season Geelong and Frankston to clinch the South Men Championship. Anthony Stewart, Robert Inches and Mark Banovic (18.5ppg, 5.1apg) are bound to give Knox Coach Graham Longstaff a few match-up problems to contend with. Stewart has been a key provider in both games these two teams have played, however Hobart have not had a full squad in both games. Banovic did not play the round 8 game, but dominated in the rd17 game with 30pts and celebrated his 300th SEABL game with a victory.

East Men Champions Knox will rely heavily on the athleticism and raw talent of East Men MVP CJ Massingale (28.0ppg, 7.9rpg) and Nick Payne (16.4ppg, 2.3apg) who have been the foundation of the Raiders’ success so far in 2008. Payne has been playing remarkable of late in the absence of the injured CJ Massingale, and will need to produce at both ends of the floor as he will likely be required to contain Chargers sharp shooter Anthony Stewart (22.8ppg, 5.7rpg, 5.5apg). Stewart has scored 14+ points in the first quarter in three of his past four games and its important Payne contains Stewart early and not let him get his shooting range early. Massingale ankle is still not 100% and another solid week of physio will be required to have him ready for the game this week.

Raiders’ second import Lester Strong (15.7ppg, 10.8rpg, 2.2bpg) has been in outstanding form during the past month but has struggled against Hobart in both games and will need to produce a solid performance this weekend. His performance in the paint against Chargers Grand Final game winner Mark Nash (12.1ppg, 12.2rpg) will have a major impact on the game.

Raiders coach Graham Longstaff will be keen for a solid performance from workmen Craig Simpson and Senad Dizdarevic. Craig has been a revelation for the team during the playoffs, and he and Senad will need to step up and produce at both ends of the court due to the absence of youngster Ben Healey. Ben departed for US College on Sunday morning and will be heavily missed by the Raiders.

The underrated hero of the Chargers line-up is guard Robert Inches (14.9ppg, 6.0rpg, 3.3apg) and his duel in the back court with Raiders Sean Carroll (10.2ppg, 4.6apg) will be a clash not to be missed. Both players control the team’s offence superbly and their individual impact in this game will reflect greatly on the team’s final result.

Knox holds an 18-13 career record against Hobart and has defeated them in all three playoff matches between the two teams. Both teams had a 6-7 road record this season, but Hobart have provided their fans with two fantastic road wins in recent weeks and will go into the contest fully confident, with their miraculous victory at Geelong two weeks ago still fresh in their minds.

BENDIGO vs DANDENONG
Saturday 15th August – 7:00pm @ Bendigo Stadium
Dandenong progressed through to the Semi Finals after a Megan Moody three point buzzer beater clinched the victory against Albury/Wodonga. Rangers coach Wayne Pollock will be hoping for a better team performance this week against the experienced Lady Braves line-up.
League MVP contender Kelly Wilson was kept quiet last week by Nunawading but will be determined for a better effort this week against the Rangers. Wilson has averaged 24pts in both games against the Rangers this year and will need to produce another stellar individual performance to get the Lady Braves over the line.

KNOX vs BRISBANE
Saturday 15th August – 6:00pm @ Knox Converse Stadium
Knox coach Heath Anderson will be hoping star centre Emily Fryters has overcome her ankle injury for this crucial match. Fryters missed the Rd20 loss to Brisbane and is a valuable member of the squad. Should Fryters not be 100% then Cunningham and import Ashlee Dunlap need to step up and provide the Raiders with a quality performance.
Lady Spartans key player Emma Randall will be tired after spending the week in camp with the Australian Opals, but is a quality player and will still be able to play a crucial role in the game. Randall and frontcourt team mates Rebecca Schatz and Rachel Pryor provide the Lady Spartans with a majority of the offence and will need to be at their best against the Raiders.

Werner recorded a double double in each game during July and started the month with a 32pt, 26rebs performance in the Cobras 83-75 victory against arch rival Knox. Wallace started the month with an 83-75 victory over arch cross town rivals Knox, but lost his only game for the month the following round with a disappointing 72-85 loss to Frankston. The Cobras needed to win all four games and hope Knox lost another game to clinch the second position and grab the second chance. Kilsyth won all four matches including a sensational 97-87 victory over Geelong on the road, but still finished with a 15-12 record and relegated to third position o

O’Hea finished the month as the leading scorer (20.7ppg), leading rebounder (12.7rpg) and leader in assists (5.3apg) for the month of July. O’Hea has had an interesting year, starting the season late due to commitments in France and then missed numerous games due to injury and Australian Opals commitments, however when she has worn her beloved Nunawading Spectres uniform she has excelled. O’Hea was dominant in the Spectres 95-71 victory on the road at Knox with 22pts, 14rebs, 9ass and 2stls in 39mins of court time.
Other Contenders – Emma Randall (Brisbane), Natalie Porter (Sandringham), Cayla Francis (Ballarat)
SEABL WOMEN COACH OF THE MONTH
WAYNE POLLOCK (Dandenong Rangers)

Pollock has had an up and down year, starting the season in fine style only to record a seven game losing streak mid way through the season. Wayne started the month with a 67-65 victory on the road in Albury/Wodonga and had a finals berth in his sight after a 2-0 away/home record in round 18. Wayne started the last round in seventh place, needing to secure a win over fourth placed Kilsyth to secure a finals berth. Wayne guided the Rangers to a comfortable 79-55 victory and grabbed fourth place on head to head results, and pushed last year champions, the Lady Cobras ou
