In what age group? 18s looked interesting considering 5 out of 6 from pool A went thru whilst only 3 from 6 in Pool B.
Out of those relegated in pool B Wizards II looked to get beaten convincingly in their games so i expect them to struggle. Redlands and SW Metro both had similiar for and against in what was obviously a weaker pool. As such you would think Brisbane Silver may do alright but i expect SW Metro to be very competitive with Syd at the helm

U18B - Expect Bris Silver and Noosa to take pool A at grading. Pool B would be Redlands Caboolture going through (if thats redlands 1st team?). Pool C- SW and Toowoomba.

That was my reconning as well, but who will make up the last 2 spots?
I know Redlands 2 is strong and will SW2 make it? GC 2 will also be a shot with the reds in pool b, think its a tough pool actually. Any 4 could make it. Have to make sure you win every game to be a certanty.

Under 16's boys BBI Silver, were very unlucky in their last 2 games loosing by 2 and 1 points in the dying seconds. Should find their feet in SC

yes, pool B is hard to know. the only teams im certain about is Bris Silver, Noosa and SW. Probs Redlands aswell.
At the U18 SC grading there is 6 standout teams in GC2, SW1, Noosa, Twmba, Red1 and BBI2. The 2 other spots prob be played off for by NS2, Logan2, SW2 and Seahawkes.
Very scrappy games all round, but it is going to be 1 hell of a SC season. Prob be SW, BBI2, Red1 and Twmba in finals. Early call I know:) BBI look the guns with SW at the moment in the final. But anything can happen, lol.
Any reports on the other tourneys?
My 2c from SC Grading as a coach of one of the teams involved.
Pool A - I liked the look of Noosa. They get the ball down the court well and kick it back out when nothing is on offer for a shot or reversal, nice to watch. Haven't seen BBI 2 play but talking to one of my ex players on their team they're doing it easily. Both have won all their games and look the class of Pool A. Logan Storm look set for third, a sentimental favourite as they helped us in preseason. Hope to see #25 for Logan back on court soon as he injured a shoulder mid-week.
Pool B has Redlands Red and GC Breakers on two wins a piece and Caboolture on 2 and 1. SW Purple and Caboolture interesting for third. All the best to James Stephenson (Redlands) who left the stadium in an ambulance with a lower leg injury.
Pool C is highlighted by Toowoomba who beat Runaway Bay then pantsed my Redlands White team. Toowoomba shot extremely well from outside the arc and ran the floor decently. They look mostly made up of top-age boys and will be a handful in SC, especially at home. A positive sign for SWM 1 is where Toowoomba is strong perimeter-wise Coach Sid has some guns inside, and a sleeping giant of a back-court with Keenan, Christian and George (I daresay there are others who will get a look in, but for mine those three would get the minutes). Interesting to see how George D plays now that defences are willing to go at him in help when he drives, whereas in 16s everyone seemed to just get out of the way. Third spot and a crossover game awaits the winner of the Redlands White vs Runaway Bay game tomorrow. Redlands ironed some of the kinks out of our game vs Toowoomba but still need to get the ball inside more. Rbay looked like they had a courageous game against SWM being close for a large part of the game.
Finally, thanks to all the referees who have given their time to be involved and all the parents who travelled out tonight to support, esp those on scorebench, your contribution is very much appreciated.
PS. I still think the idea of playing grading on courts marked with the rectangular FIBA court and two different three point arcs is ludicrous, especially 18 boys. Anyone else find it weird?

Congrats to the 2 Redlands U14 boys teams who qualified for SC. And of course all our other Redland teams who made it through inc U14g, U16b, U16g and U18b. Bad luck to the U18b White, thought u were unlucky in your game against RB 2 today.
Redlands U18b Red did it tough today with only 6 in the game against GC2. Interesting start to the season with a dominant big out with a twisted ankle, Guard with (at best) potential ligament damage to the ankle last night. Speedy recovery boys :).
On a different note.....
Congradulations to all teams at SC U18b grading. The great sportsmanship and high level of integrity shown by all teams was a beautiful thing to see.
Enjoy your season!!!!!

It is and it isnt.
We might see clubs now selecting and start training earlier to ensure they get in. It could have extended our season unintentionally.
But on the other hand if your good enough to make it you did. And a reward is that you maintain your spot all year.
Feel your pain tho :(

In 08/09 Redlands u12 went from first in SC to bottom place in PL at halfway point through crossover. Runaway Bay got relegated after getting beaten by 40 +.
Redlands then went on to win 6 of 7 and even beat the eventual comp winner, but 6 from 7 was still not enough to make the semis. So all up they win 13 of 14 games and still don't make semis.
Runaway Bay go from winning no games in PL to winning SC final.
Crossover sucks because as good as you may be, you're left at a big disadvantage going into last place. Any promotion/relegation system needs more work to give teams a decent shot.

A Districts First Team Playing in Southern Cup should win every game. Smaller associations often end up with their firsts teams in Southern Cup but for an Association the size of Districts to be there is somewhat of un underachievement. I am not saying an under achievement for those particular players as they may not be Premier League calibre, but with the pool Districts have to choose from, the fact their best group can't make Premier League (while playing the grading at home) is suprising.
As for 3 bottom age kids, that wont scare anyone for next year. Most Southern Cup teams are 3/4 bottom aged kids, so really it just says a side with 7+ top age kids could only make Southern Cup and next year none will have had u14 Premier League experience and only 3 will have experienced Southern Cup. Unless the kids in u12 top age this year are great, I'd sooner say watch out to these boys next year or they could be In Cup again.
Good luck to them and the Coach though. Hopefully they can go undefeated and get to Div 1 for Classics, with some improvement throughout the year, they may be able to upset a few teams there.

it would suck if there is no cross over
especially for those smaller associations like caboolture & noosa who cant trail for premier league as you need a team in every age group
the only chance they have at playing div 1 is at the cross over challenge
Caboolture have a team in every age group.
But yeah it would still be good to have midway crossover. The closer the PL comp gets to the old BSQ the better.

any stand out players in the u18 boys sc?
any stand out players in the u18 boys sc?
Not sure about a few teams but there seemed to be alot of teams that ran pretty deep. Like BBI, Toowoomba and Redlands. without stats its hard to tell at this stage who are the stand outs.
BBI consistant across board with last yrs U16 champs making up half the team. Prob would be my starting 5 actually.
Toowoomba strong with a few good outside shooters this year.
Noosa seemed to play a real team game, lots of transition and a good big lighting it up from the freethrow line in a trailing roll.
SW will only get better under Sid throughout the season. Interesting to see a Redlands 2 Centre get 4 blocks in their game and a Pin I think I saw. But their freethrow shooting will cost the boys some suicides or the like at training this week Im sure.
GC2 were a bit speratic but very competant in offence, prob were unlucky not to beat Redlands 1.
Didnt see much of Logan2, sry Mack. But looking at their list they should be very competitive and cause a few upsets.
Caboulture had a great game v GC2 to get entry on a countback. They will also improve heaps over the season.
If Redlands can get over their injury concerns early in the season they are potentially a deep team not really losing anything from the bench, which could prove the difference in some games.
Any other thoughts?

Actually that rule has now been changed. Such associations can now apply to BQ to be allowed to trial for Premier League.

Dont want to give 2 much away (but if you payed attention at grading you would have noticed anyway), Noosa has 2 players that averaged 14ppg at U18 classics last July, in a team that made the div2 final. Im pretty sure they will stand out this season.

Just so we all understand the situation for the under 14 boys.
Rep trials were called and 32 players rolled up with 3 away. Within 2 weeks 4 players had elected to play elsewhere for different reasons. That is every parents right to do what they want. Life moves on. Within another 2 weeks a player that was to be a most important part of our structure elected to have six month off because he was burnt out through playing rep in another sport. He was invited to return when he was feeling better but to date has not returned. He is agreat kid and obviously needs the break from all sport. We wish him well. His mate who is probably the second biggest athletic kid in this age group also is sitting out with him.
The Grading week-end arrived and another three players advised that due to personal and school reasons they could not play. One other player got injured and could not play. We competed with basically our second team and fell one shot short of making Premier League. Life goes on.
Last week-end we had three players return for the Cup gradings and we started to play as we had been training. I felt sorry for the opposition as we played hard from start to finish. That is how we will play in all games this year. We have to set our own standards and drive ourselves from within.
The boys and parents have not complained about the new BQ structure which does not allow a second chance and accept where we are. The players involved are very committed and will develope in preparation for the Challenge round prior to Classics. Hopefully we will win these games and play division one at Classics.
Basketball is a game at the end of the day and the lessons that we learn from sport hopefully making us better people in lfe. I am sure the boys want to be the best they can so now it is up to them to accept this small hurdle in life to be the best they can.
To fix the problem for future years we have already started doing sessions on Sundays for players who did not make the teams to develop skills. The sessions are very basic but they will ensure we have a future at the highest level. The under 12 teams are in good hands and the future is looking very bright with other programs starting this week.

Good Luck to your team, hope your kids can remain 'hungry' through out the season in SC with the easy wins that I expect from your post. All I can say about no cross over is that teams have to be at their best right from Grading and that close is not good enough. Is there a better way to improve this - probably not

If the grading rounds had been done over two week-ends as Associations asked for then games on any single day are not an issue. Just needed some thought but hey such is life. The easiest way is always the way basketball goes which is why we can never get anything set as long term. Getting the best teams into the highest grade and for that matter teams where they should be playing no matter the level should be a focus of those in charge. That way the sport will be able to develope on more levels in a structured system rather then just the highest as seems to be our focus these days. Back to my box.

Interesting to see 2 of Ipswich's court now conform to the new 'key and 3 point' markings. So my question is with the season approaching either all courts need the new lines or 2 of Ipswichs court don't meet BQ rules and as such they only have 1 court to play all their games on - it will be a long night. We can not run a competition with 2 different styles of court, can we?

I noticed at the new Logan courts that the new lines had been marked but pulled up before the first game was played there WNBL Logan Vs AIS.
from the FIBA website
"For high level competitions/Level 1 (main FIBA official competitions: i.e. Olympic Tournaments, World Championships for Men and Women, U19 and U17 World Championships for Men and Women and Zone/Continental Championships for Men and Women): as of 1st October 2010, i.e. after the 2010 FIBA World Championship.
• For medium level competitions/Level 2 (i.e. all other FIBA official competitions and the high level competitions of the national federations): as of 1st October 2012, i.e. after the London
2012 Olympic Games."
With the straight keys is the defensive team now allowed to have 4 players line up for free throws ?
Also is the non charge area in the key to be used in all levels of competition ?
The two sets of three point lines might be more of a distraction for players in the short term than the different-shaped keyway. It certainly didn't lose us any games in Grading but did enter the player's minds and cause some confusion.
Interesting also to see how the no-charge circle being there will influence charge/block calls around the basket. But then the local referees will be used to it and put it out of mind, so I guess it won't factor.

From BBI Silver : Nick Dickinson, Brandon Holloway, Justin Schulze and their big man.
From Noosa : I forgot the kids name but I think number 4 and number 9 from memory.
All in all Southern Cup should be great this year, I reckon the top 4 will be BBI, Noosa, Toowoomba and SW.
By the way, any chance we can have specific U18, U16 etc Southern Cup Threads?

Yeah, thought Nick's three pointer close to the end of their game was huge (although I am biased as I have coached him previous seasons).
Already stated that I am impressed with the way Noosa get the ball down the floor. Didn't someone say that Noosa had two players averaging 14ppg in last U18 Classics? That has to stand for something. Nice to see another Assoc providing teams for rep, variety is the spice of life, right?
Good luck to all in SC this season, will be an interested spectator with my team in CC.

I wouldn't count out Redlands from that top 4. They played most of the SC tournament with 6 players and still went through undefeated. A tough backcourt with Dylan D and Nathan Farley, and some solid looking bigs and impact of the bench. As Coach B mentioned before, if they can keep their injuries under check, or maybe bring one or two of the better players from the second team through, I am pretty sure they will be right there at the end of the season.

it is way too early for predictions of top four as Redlands went through undefeated cannot count them out. They also came very close to Gc breakers it just depends on how rep coaches are improving there teams to me the draw for SC this year it is all extremely tight and the winners will be the team that knuckles down and is willing to improve. All in all SC will be great this year excited for round 1 that is coming up.

To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, "To lose one player, Mr Ladewig, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose six looks like carelessness!"
For your sake I hope your child does not ever have a melt down. I understand your cowardly need to have a go at myself behind hidden names (no balls) but one of those children you are mentioning needed to stop. His parents did the right thing by the child and his mate has a thing called loyalty to him. I admire that. Some parents, and I am thinking your are one of them, place way to much expectations on their children to succeed in life where they themselves have failed. Make sure you are happy where you are is my suggestion to you. Programs are built on long term plans not short term goals. We will see in two years time which players learnt the most in life and our sport over the coming season. For every player that moves on another gets a chance and I must say the players grabbing the chance are great kids with great parents. Feel free to come talk to me about anything if you want but I will not need to schedule such a thing as your courage like your social committment to team culture lack all credability. You are a coward and now your child knows it as well.

Mate! Youve made some great points that the newbys in basketball just dont have any comprehension nor understanding of...and a huge contributing factor to the downgrading of our sport to a level 2 activity in the QAS framework.
I needed to do a communications course as I was failing to communicate my visions and logic because they would get 'lost' amongst my personal frustrations and distaste for the actions/attitudes of others that was evident in my comms. e.g. Great ideas get dismissed because they arent communicated properly or in the correct forum and with the right people. (So I did a little bit of judicious editing on your behalf and removed the 'personal' stuff.)
What you said above (minus the personal stuff) should be printed out and posted on the wall of every junior sporting facility in the country. Hold strong.
brisbane is the team to beat in southern cup
a strong core and very deep bench
toowoomba will be close behind on the back of their tremendous shooting skills.
nossa and logan will be the other 2 teams in contention.
both teams will be relying on their captains. # 5 for logan and # 4 noosa.
both great leaders and emotional players.
any one care to correct me on the standings??
dude you missin logan they gonna kill

Give we please have a seperate section.
Seems a shame there isn't going to be challanges this year. Some teams were just not ready for PL trials and lost by very small margins and then went through underfeated in SC. Going to be a very uneven comp looking at last weeks results.

register and make ur own section and you must be talking about bbi silver. grading is only that grading teams will get better than they were then. some pl teams weren't ready looking at them but they still made it.

I do not think comp will be that uneven. 4 teams from one Pool made it through. Logan beat Bris Bronze by 2, Toow Beat Logan by 8, Bris Bronze beat Toow by 8. SW dead beat all of them, but the 3 point game to Toow shows they can be beaten too.
Redlands by +4 over Caboolture. And Redlands, Caboolture and Logan all beat Sea Hawks by 12-15 pts.
Brissy Silver +22 over Noosa shows them as the cream of the crop however Brissy Silver and South West had very similar losses to Logan and Maroochydore at Premier League grading so do look fairly balanced, and as stated earlier, SW have shown they are beatable. And Brissy Silver only Beat Redlands by 2 at PL grading as well.
So I don't think will be too uneven.
I think Brissy Silver will finish on top, but will drop one or two on the way. Could be a few teams trading wins and losses after that to work out the order.
I really see no evidence to say it will be uneven. All the Blow out wins were against teams that dropped to Challenge Cup.
Brissy Silver and SW both came close last week to making Premier League, but also got belted by the better teams in that comp, so they would not have Premier League contenders had they made it. They'll have more even games in SC than they would have in PL, except they have a good chance of winning most in SC. They can always challenge for a Div 1 spot at the Wildcard for classics if they want.
Which age group??
its 18s
Any other thoughts?
nick from bris is a solid player if the rumour of an "all team" is true he should be in it. toowoomba have great shooters and a good group.
redlands one have a good back court Dylan and Nathan are good players.
BUT im still really big on 5 from logan and 4 from noosa.
the pg for noosa really stood out he hit a game winning shot and ive heard from inside the team he averaged 12 and 6 assists which is good considering the minutes of the games.
Logan is also doing a stat record and players number 5 filled the stat sheet every game.
does anyone have any info on either of these two. not being associated with either association i have no clue who they are and what they have previously done?? im just judging from the games i have seen.

Some decent splits in this age group. Not sure how Redlands 2 got into the division but they will struggle big time. Yes they are all bottom age but perhaps a year in lower divsiions would have been more of a confidence booster.
See Logan also did some belting of their own.

You are kidding right?
They won enough games to go str8 into SC (no play off. 3/4 games), and I think if Spartans are in SC, who is out of place? No offence to Spartans who prob should be in PL.
Not a fair comment in my eyes.
It will be their biggest defeat of the season mark my words on that one!!!

Plesae do not take this the wrong.
The current system of sorting out who plays where is so badly screwed up that most of this season wil be wasted by teams playing against teams that should be playing elsewhere.

I agree with this, but BQ are trying to please everyone i think and the delegates get to have a say as well so the right direction in the planning process is happening. We all need to give BQ a little bit of time to sort it out. It will all work out at the end of the day and Classics will see the right teams in the right place. Maybe a crossover should be in the season but then again with out it it rewards teams prepared at grading.
As far as teams getting smashed, look at U16 girls on sat, Logan d BBI by a crap load as well, even in U18 b PL there were big margins of 30+ points so I just think to improve and develop individuals they need to be playing up a level. The Redlands U14 White will certainly improve and next season when they rejoin their team mates of last year as top agers they will be better off for the excercise.
No-one like to see kids being demoralised on the court but it is a part of learning the lessons of life and will in the long run make them hungry to improve and eventually excell. :)

Tell that to the kids getting smashed at will by Spartans. They should be in division one. losing by nearly 80 points is no fun for anyone.

So they should be, but they arent. Big losses will happen even in PL. Last night 125 to 44 in an U16g game.

BQ, are you still standing by your desission not to play crossover challenge,
consider this, Spartans are just scored another 100pts in a game against not so week NorthSide2, on the other side BBI Silver is not doing so good, as well as Ipswich and
Maroochy.
THink again about it

Crossover challenge, it has to happen again, it is the only way to fix up the pools. Under 16 BBI Silver boys need to be in PL. They will get smashed by the top 3 but the rest of the comp will be fair competition. Better for the rest of SC too.
