View Full Version : College 09/10 Discussion
Started a thread so we can keep tabs on our mass of junior talent that will be playing in the NCAA/NAIA ranks this season. Please post any updates as you come across them.
Here's one to start.

Newberry (Browne sisters, Laura Marquardt) defeated D1 UNC Asheville 66-53. Amy Browne 12 & 6 in a starting role.
Texas or Kentucky for the win
Sorry this is slightly offtopic because it's football but Jesse Williams's (Logan Rep player in the same group as Mitch Young, Kynon Gameran, TJ Diop, Jake Schatz and Morgan Perry in U16) Arizona Western College (Juco) team won the Division Championship overnight and is likely to get a bowl game invitation.
Christian Salecich getting it done for St Louis (find credited to jronfire.com).

Also if anybody knows when any of our locals are going to get a run on ESPN, please post it up. I'm sure there are many others apart from myself who are keen to watch and support the QLDers.

Can get the non televised Saint Marys games via live streaming (that works!) from a link on the Gaels.com website. "Gaelvision" from memory. Can pay per view but I just paid about USD$50 for the entire athletics program for the whole year. (womens b'ball as well, athletics, football etc.)

...and Sean Page named Coach of the year 2nd year running same conference...then just today Jorden Page getting major love from the American commentators as a 'Defensive spe^^^^^^t' for his major lockdown of Portland's top scorer (and his 15 pts) in St Marys 25+ semi final win of the WCC Conference tournament in Vegas!!
Go the thong wearin' surfie kids!
Marys got a watershed win over the Zags in today's WCC final.
I don't like watching many college games, but this was awesome to watch, although I'm partly biased due to the numerous Aussies involved with Marys.
A remarkable victory as the Zags have been a huge bogey team, and not only did they get beaten, they eventually got pumped. Jordan Page did a lot in crunch time when Marys were just managing to break away in the second half. I'd say the victory will give Marys chances of making the NCAA tourney a sizeable boost as well.
Game is replayed at 12:30am tonight on ESPN for those who have it.

He made another one of those during the second half as well - quite an uncanny knack to lay the ball in so effortlessly with pending contact.
In the South bracket Marys (10) beat Richmond (7) 80-71 in the first round.

Samhan lead the way with 29 & 12. Steindl the best of the Aussies with 11. As a sidenote Mitch Young, who was getting a lot of play earlier in the season, only got two minutes run.
Marys play Villanova (2) tomorrow. Game is live on ESPN at 3am, and is replayed at 1pm.

Jord only got a few minutes also after getting pretty good clock in the conference semis and final. Nothing in it but. Coach Bennett likes to develop his freshmen patiently and both Mitch and Jord are playing more time than he usually alots freshmen. There was the hole left in the guards by Patty's departure and then Hunters injury and Dalle has been able to adapt to (or is that 'resist') the College lifestyle, the best so far. Randy is happy and excited with our guys this year and for next.
Fantastic outcome for the Gaels to firstly win the WCC and actually get to the dance in their freshman year and then win the first round! Can they get past Villanova but to be one of the sweet 16??!!!
Huge task...but Dick Vitel is tipping St. Marys in an upset.

Gees St Marys through to the sweet 16!!
Marys pulled through in a close one 75-68. Game tied with just over a minute to go when Mickey Mcconnell banked in a big triple to put the Gaels ahead for good.

Hate the ESPN coverage , so many commercials that are the same commercial over and over and over. Even the replays are laced with same amount of ads .Need to invest in a T VO or IQ box.

Yeh, the viewing party on campus starts 4.30 pm Friday, San Francisco time and that translates to 6 pm Houston time which translates to 9am Saturday 27th Maroochydore time. Dick Vitale was right about Villanova wonder what he thinks about Baylor?

Article on Amy Browne from Maroochy .....
BEAVERTON, Ore. - The Women's Division II Bulletin released its basketball All-American teams Monday afternoon and Newberry had two players represented. Amy Browne was named to the All-Freshman team while Anita Bulcher earned her second honorable mention All-American honor.
Amy Browne (Maroochydore, Australia) shined in her first year on the court for the scarlet and gray. Browne started every game for Newberry and saw more playing time than any other player. She ended her freshman campaign as Newberry's third leading scorer, putting up 327 points on the year and averaging 10.9 points per game. She posted the second highest three-point field goal percentage in the South Atlantic Conference at .403 (30-73). Browne was named the SAC Freshman of the Year as well this season.
"Amy really worked hard and made an immediate impact on the floor," said head coach Sean Page. "I have no doubt that she will continue to grow and improve as a player as her career develops."
Bulcher (Russia, Ohio) played a pivotal role in the success of the Newberry College women's basketball team over the 2009-10 season. She ended the season as Newberry's leader in points, rebounds, blocks and field-goal percentage.
She was the nation's sixth best rebounder with 11.7 rebounds per game after spending several weeks as number one. Her 16.3 points per game ranked her as the sixth best scorer in the South Atlantic Conference and she had the second best field-goal percentage in the SAC at .556 (174-313). Bulcher also saw success at the free-throw line with a .741 percentage.
This is Bulcher's second All-American Honorable Mention achievement as she was previously named a Division II State Farm Coaches' Honorable Mention All-American. These honors serve to further her already impressive list of regional and national accolades. Bulcher was also named a DAKTRONICS All-Southeast Region first teamer. Her performances were well recognized across the conference as she was honored as the SAC Player of the Week three times and ultimately named first team all-SAC.
The Division II Bulletin and Women's Division II Bulletin have been a leading authority on small college basketball since 1991. Women's Division II Bulletin has been published since 1993 and has served as the leading publication covering Division II women's basketball. The publication's Postseason Review awards a national Coach and Player of Year as well as the All-America Team and All-Freshman Team.
"This honor is just another testament to how hard Anita has worked to get to where she is now," said Page. "She never stopped working to make herself a better basketball player and her reward has been one of the best seasons in the program's history."
Got this email today, might interest a few young 'uns ...
Hello:
I am writing to ask for your help in identifying young men with basketball ability who might benefit from attending a well established college prep boarding school.
In early April I accepted the position of boys varsity basketball coach at the Canterbury School <http://www.cbury.org (http://www.cbury.org/)> in New Milford, Connecticut. I am very excited about the opportunity to coach at Canterbury and I am currently recruiting student-athletes for the 2010-2011 basketball season.
My goal is to enroll a few young men, including post graduates, who can improve our team immediately, and others with good potential who can help us build for the future.
Canterbury is a traditional, coeducational, college preparatory boarding school with a long history of preparing students for success in college. Because Canterbury is a Catholic school, values are important, but Canterbury is not just for students of the Catholic faith: more than 40% of Canterbury students are not Catholic.
A list of the colleges in which Canterbury students have enrolled in recent years can be found at <http://www.cbury.org/podium/default.aspx?t=116528>. If you review the list, you will quickly understand how well Canterbury prepares its students for college.
Canterbury students live in a welcoming community on an attractive campus in a beautiful New England town. Students and faculty are friendly, energetic, and supportive. Classes average just 11 students.
It would be pretty hard to imagine a better environment.
I am looking for young men with academic and athletic skills, a solid work ethic, good character, and the ability to understand how big a difference a school like Canterbury can make in their lives. I will be happy to hear about, or hear from, the family of any young man you wish to recommend.
Canterbury offers financial aid, when available, to students with demonstrated financial need. Athletic and "full ride" scholarships are not available, however, so all families are required to make a financial contribution to the educations of their children.
Canterbury plays a challenging basketball schedule, competing against prep schools in New England and New York.
Please spend just a few minutes on the Canterbury website <http://www.cbury.org (http://www.cbury.org/)>: you'll see how much there is to like.
After that, I hope you will think of or encounter a young man or a parent who makes you think of this message and that you will either send me their contact information or invite them to contact me at <aegc@earthlink.net> or (337) 296-4000. I also hope you'll be kind enough to pass this message on to anyone who may have contact with student-athletes for whom Canterbury might be a good choice.
Thank You and Best Wishes,
Dan Rosenfield
