Cairns Marlins' Williams to freshen up (http://www.cairns.com.au/article/2010/04/14/105581_local-sport-news.html)

THE Cairns Marlins will start the season without talisman Kerry Williams but will not be without the point guard for their entire Queensland Basketball League campaign.

Marlins coach Mick Downer, also an assistant coach with the Taipans, said Williams needed to give his body a break and take time to work on specific parts of his game.

"Kerry Williams won’t play the start of the season but we expect that at some point he’ll join the squad and play the back-end of the season," Downer said.

"He’s got some things that he needs to address in his game from an NBL level, so we’re going to take time and really work on his development in the off-season," he said. "And then we’ll bring him back in (to the Marlins’ squad) and get him sharp again with the ABA season.

"He’ll definitely add value to the program when he comes back."

The price is $5 per week from noon Frid to noon following Frid, you can watch all games live and VOD from SEABL and QBL in that week. Not sure how many live QBL games there will be, SEABL will have one or two per week. Still talking with QBL.

What is the go with SWM playing games on Saturday afternoon and before the women even. Surely this is not the way to promote basketball as a serious sport. Looks to me like at administration just want to get it over and done so they can go to football at night.

I think it actually might be a good idea, it seems to me they are holding them earlier just after their juniors fixtures finish on a saturday.
Hopefully it encourage some of the junior kids to stick around and watch. would definitely create a more community feel

Finally the much anticipated 1st game of the season is here so we can answer such questions as Who the hell is playing for Gold Coast and for that matter who is playing for the other 4 or 5 teams who’s teams haven’t been updated yet on the QBL site???

As most of you know over the last few years I have been asking my world class bookies for their thoughts and odds for each weeks games but this week my bookie Gunngeir (meaning Warrior) is unavailable due to the fact that he lives on Eyjafjallajokull (the erupting Volcano in Iceland) so I decided to go it alone, that’s right I’m deciding the odds on this weeks games and I’ll be taking all the profits from the betting ring…
So without further ado here are the first round odds for 2010 season…

Goldy @ SW
For all those not in the know the lizards could have Shane Heal, Sam MacKinnon and Corey “Homicide” Williams playing for them since they don’t have NBL gigs now, but we do know that the Pirates have added an experienced full time Coach and a tall cleaning utensil which is enough to swing the odds in their favour to “sweep” GC up… $100 on SW
SW 2:1 GC 7:1

Bundy @ Suns
I learnt how to read tea leaves after watching Harry Potter 4 and for some reason I saw the eye of the tiger on the bottom of the cup which we all know means there will be a disagreement in this game, I don’t know if it’s because Nello an Shackles will be jet lagged and the Beast puts someone on their arse or because Lloydy sets one of his Famous Brick wall screens on Thalo all I know is the tea leaves don’t lie.. they didn’t say anything bout who would win tho but after watching how bad the seppos were on Elite Hoops after just flying into the country that day and playing I’m going to put $25 on the Suns to win but I’ll put $50 on in favour of Bundy for the fight..
Suns 3:1 Bulls 5:1

Neers @ Ippy
From all reports Ippy is going be a contender this year, I’m not sure how high the person was when they posted that but I know some players in other more northern teams who would really appreciate being hooked up with whatever he was smoking but Ippy do look like they have definitely improved on last few years efforts… Neers are all local so I’m not going to diss them as I remember the days of 50pt losses all too well when the Power were in the same position but it’s going to be a tough year with everyone else bringing in talent… $50 on Ippy
Ippy 2:1 Twmba 9:1

Power @ Ville
The Top of the north doesn’t look as scary anymore now they don’t field full NBL 1st fives, I still think it’s freaking ridiculous we have to play them 3 times and that whoever did the draw obviously had the SEQ in mind trying to get the ladies down there as much chance to get the top spot as possible but the good news is with 2 nites at the Casino and a Sunday sesh celebrating Rayray’s B’day and Dg’s 100th game on the line if we lose that’s enough motivation for a team with alcohol an gambling issues to get up an “cool down” the Heat… $275 on Power
Power 2:1 Ville 3:5

Caps @ Clips
This game has every possibility of turning into a school yard street ball game with two of the youngest teams in the league both with players with ADHD going hard and at 3000 klms/hr I would expect at least 150 shots per team in this game and thanks to Clips blooding a lot of their players last year or two and the fact they have been training together since November 09 I’m going to give them the edge in experience but I don’t think they will have a full team for a few weeks till college in Seppoland is finished for the year… $25 on Clips
Clips 4:1 Caps 5:1

Mkay @ Cairns
The new team with an NBL 1st 5 vs the old team without their NBL 1st 5… you can say what you like about how good the young guppies are this is a rebuilding year for Cairns no Grabau, Boondi, Gray, William, Jawai, Khalu or Coach Fearne with the exception of Vale the rest of the 2010 Marlins weren’t consistent Starters until this year and while they will still be good they lost 770 years of experience in 2 years so as long as Rhys an Timmy share the ball with the other kids the score board will be all Red and Black up @ the Fishtank this Satnite… $200 on Meteors
Mkay 2:1 Fish 5:1

Wiz @ Neers
So is Trigger definitely not playing this year??? I think Toowoomba gave a collected group sigh of relief when they heard that he wasn’t coming back to put another monster 70pt game on them, I will say though if your going to play up the mountain do it as early in the season as possible before the Winter sets in and you need to wear your Ski suit on the bench… Bubbles to wreck havoc on tired Twmba legs $223 on Wiz
Wiz 1.5:1 Neers 11:1

Betting currency this week is leftover Easter Eggs (preferably Red Tulip or Darrel Lea) so I can get some Browny points with the missus after all the money I’m going to spend this weekend I’m going to need it, just send me your bets via Australia Post in Fragile mail bags and remember to take some time out on Sunday to remember those diggers who sacrificed a lot for this country…

or they are hopeing that the crowd for the mens game will stay and hangaround for the womens game. As most associations fail to get numbers to womens games.

As I understand it the women play at 12 noon on the Saturday and men at 2pm. How many players will not be able to make the game on what for many is a normal working day.

This I suggest is about SWM not being able to get the stadium and not willing to do much about it. Welcome to QBL in the south.

My guess is the Gold Coast players who have jobs and will now not be playing. A double booking should not happen if BQ and SWM staff were doing job right way, Game should have been moved to Friday, Sunday or even to the Gold Coast. Want people to respect QBL then start to manage it in a professional manner.

I don't see what the fuss is about - particularly the chirping about 'people with jobs'.

Playing at midday and two will allow for a different demographic to attend, and South West will get a decent crowd with people who will be doubling up and to watch another set of games later in the evening.

Bring on more lunch/arvo games on Saturday I say - it certainly has its positives. Don't see why we should not look outside the square in terms of playing times.

Three hours of hiking up a mountain in the pouring rain through mud, creeks, over branches, over rocks, and in rainforest was just a small part of a 24hour Team camp the Bartercard Cairns Marlins completed at Kearney's on the Mulgrave River over the weekend.

The camp was a vital part of the team's preparation for an onslaught on the 2010 Queensland Basketball League (QBL) title. The players were notified of the team camp a few weeks prior but were given the bare minimum of information in preparation for the weekend adventure.

"A big part of the camp was to have players get out of their comfort zone and to see how they would react," Cairns Marlins Head Coach Mick Downer stated.

With several changes to the 2009 QBL Championship winning team, the Marlins coaching staff felt it was crucial for this year's team to get to know each other away from the court and to be tested physically and mentally. Both of these elements were clearly tested over the endurance camp.

After a 4km hike on the first afternoon, just after first light on the second day of the camp the group headed out for a 8km hike towards the summit, through the magnificent ranges of the Mullunburra people (people of the Mulgrave River). In tow was an eighty kilogram raft, safety equipment, kayak's, food and water.

The groups were required to transport the raft and equipment to the drop in point before negotiating the river's rapids back to camp. The teams were lead by Marlins Assistant coach and the "The Northern Outlook" staff member Gausa Arnold and Riley Best.

"The rafting exercise required the teams to work together, share responsibilities, and to communicate effectively to negotiate the challenging rapids", Gausa Arnold said.

Marlins players found the camp to be both difficult but rewarding, "It was one of the hardest things I've ever done...we had to get through it as a team, talking to each other and working out the best way to carry the raft. The guys really worked hard, we were going on not much sleep and were sore and tired but we got the task done." Dwayne Vale - Marlins & Taipans player.

The weekend was delivered by "The Northern Outlook" program and was well received by the Marlins coaching staff, "It (the program) definitely achieved what we set out to do and hope that a foundation has been laid for the team to build from for this season", Mick Downer.

The Marlins have a full week of training ahead as they prepare for their first challenge of the season this Saturday night as they take on a star studded line-up Mackay at the Bendigo Bank Basketball Centre.

Maroochy Women just lacking a bit of "flow" in their offence to go down narrowly to Brisbane. Looks like plenty of upside to the Clipperesses and highlights included the perennial ball wizadry of Dallas and the resurrection of (a very rusty) but very effective, Kayla Beazley. Been a long time since the 'Dore fans saw someone run 10 metres and dive 10 to snavel a loose ball off the floor under the oppositions noses! Hitting the clear man middle of the chest from half way is a reminder of the uncanny Beazley passing game. Hope she sticks with it now.
Couple of new faces bringing a mix of athleticism and experience and raising the intensity and vigour is a good sign for the beach babes.

What the heck is going on with no boxscores on the QBL site? Very ordinary to say the least considering this is the opening week of competition, and as such will be drawing a large amount of interest. UGH.

At least I can pick up a smattering of final stats from those who were organised enough to broadcast live scores last night. A few thoughts if you will indulge them;

- no JC or Adam Darragh in the SWM/GC game yesterday afternoon, wussup? I think the lizards will get owned inside through the season by those with decent bigs.

- the Bulls silence the haters (for now) with a solid 15-point win against the Suns ... they led by 23 at the last change. Hanson a beast with 35 & 10. Thalo had 28 for the Suns and the unheralded Hayden Reed chipped in with 18 but Brad Williamson the talking point with 7 & 5 before fouling out in half a game.

- hard to take anything from the Ippy/Neers game. After tooting his own in the pre-season, hyped signing Fereti only put 6 points on the board and played 15 minutes ... is it too early to be saying 'bust' ?? I see there's two Dickersons on the Neers roster, are they Pop's kids?

- Cairns may have held a Fitz-less Meteors to ten points, but despite all the talk I don't think they will figure in the post-season.

- verrrrrrrry low scoring game in Townsville, with the hosts downing a hyped-up Power by 14. What happened?

- don't have much to say for the women sorry. Gonna be a long season for the Suns if they got smashed by an import-less Bears side though. Cairns suddenly look solid again with McMeeken-Ruscoe and Pedro back on board. Note to Nagas: add Charlotte Taylor and Ashlee Wallis to your All-Hot squad.

I only just read over the previews on the QBL site - obviously put together quickly with a number of spelling errors and poorly-written pars. Pick your shit up seriously!

Mail on the Wizards Trigger-less situation is that they're looking to fill his spot with another big man, but are not in a rush to do so given their favourable schedule for the next 2-3 weeks. Have heard a few names bandied about and they are no slouches.

Given that the Melbourne Tigers have for a long time been absolute misers in insisting that their NBL players suit up for their Big V team, am very suprised that they are letting Trigger play a few games for Rocky (if true). There would have to be a sweetener for them, or someone in Rocky has a good connection.

I am guessing you're one of these players who had your mum or dad challenging the coach on why you werent hitting the floor.....these guys will continue to peel the oranges until they have worked hard enough and are good enough to play at the level.

Speaking of working the shaft, sounds like you do it a bit of that if you think Cam is getting paid that sort of money.....

Right on cue Mugs! Cam is just helping out a mate and has agreed to play a couple of games for a free ticket to Keppel for a much needed holiday.

Cam's past history would suggest that he is never interested in the coin, he has virtually played for nothing in past seasons, if you believe the Wiz and Mugs himself before that. So makes sense to me Cam T playing for the love....

The game on the weekend was the first game together for the Maroochy women. I predict that once they get the right flow to the game plus there extra players coming in, they'll be very hard to defeat.
Dallas and Kayla are going to be key players on the CLippers side
Amy browne coming back will be a huge help for them too
aswell as Kristina who scored 28 points
Two other small guards (not sure of there names) are going to be hard to stop
and
this team is very athletic. Going to be a hard team to stop

as for our game wen you shot at 32% you cant expect to win too many games as a short team but like some games the score line doesnt reflect the game Heat were up by 3-5 pts with 7mins to go but Tville as they will do to some teams just kept on wearing us down..

side note Flames beat Power by 3 at home with Power gals missing Nat Hurst n Di Neeves cant wait for rematch for both teams...

Not sure fiba problem is a good enough excuse for not having results in the "results" section.

Also the results should be posted straight away and not when someone is in the office the next working day. This would require a small amount of organisation and even less elbow grease to make this happen. The fans of this comp are not just reading info on the site between 9 to 5 monday to friday. In fact they are more likely to read this stuff in their free time especially on weekends, let alone straight after a game to see what happened. Is this good for image of our comp, because there is some good quality basketball happening on court, wouldnt it be nice to have icing on the cake by having some good administration and promotion.

Is this too much to ask considering the fees paid by clubs?

The software used to update the website is FIBA software. If it is down get over it! Im sure you will survive a day or so until it is updated. Did we ask you to work on a public holiday to make sure it happens, maybe you could donate your time to help out?

This is not a pub league. The associations that participate pay good money and it is reasonable to expect that the competition must be administered to a high standard. The fact that the scores online reflects poorly on our league, no ifs ands or buts.

So what, this is week one of a new season with new administrators, reflects poorly on the whole league. Let's hope this is not the norm now that Steve Brook has moved on. Proof will be this week with another "public holiday" .

Excuses are like arseholes, everyone has one!!

Maybe they need to get in touch with SEABL stats people and learn from them. Results are ALWAYS up straight away.
Premier QLD comp? Pffft. Not when the attitudes remain amateur.

Nothing has changed. Narelle was working on the junior classics up to a week before QBL started. Not her fault, just poorly managed from above.

And yes, the QBL administrator (which it is no longer called?) is a FULL TIME position, paid very good money.

There was a change to the stats software this year which was supposed to update the website with the results automatically, or so BQ thought.

I think it may be time for the clubs to stipulate what they expect out of the admin position. In all honesty I think once they write down all the tasks they will realize that all they need is a part time position, not the 4 months/8 hours a week they currently get.

most of the results can be viewed via live stats, I think all are there except Townsville vs power.

This is not the point though the stats should be up but while we wait you can view box scores, play by play, leaders and shot chart for each player.

Very disappointing we had no results or box scores- what is more disappointing is the crap they have now put on- check the Cap- Marocy box score- Marocy won 404 to 366- both sides should work on there defence

with saltmarsh still coaching the womens team they will be lucky to finish in the bottom 4. lets get rid of him now and put someone in that at least gives the players a little respect. thats why they lost players and will never attract any imports because of the coach. wake up coastal suns and listen to what the players are saying and what the fans want.

no Nat Hurst or Di Neeves both who we all know are responsible for a majority of the dimes an Jess running the point made it hard for her to get hers i hope Tville have some more up there sleeve for the rematch...

Yes they are pop's offspring.

Anthony Tribe with 21pts and 7rebs for the visitors

I do believe that the Mountaineers were the home team.

YEP they pops kids & one of em got a monster block on Ryan Jeffries ay!! WOW.

Fereti = Injuried thus his lack of minutes!! & game was played at the switch!!

That's not very nice!! Salty has done very well and has been to the finals for the past two years.... might want to ease up on him a little.

two returning seppos both get dub dubs to get the nod for Rd1 POW

Matthew Hanson of Bulls with 35pts @ 65% an 10rebs

Catherine Scanlon of South West Metro Pirates with 24pts an 17rebs

on a side note some chick named Julia Tann got 11 stls vs neers i don't know if that's cos she's a great defender or neers ladies are bad passers but some people don't get that many steals in a season let alone one game...

she is a past SEABL defensive player of the year so i would say she is a great defender.

Whats up with the time to get clearances from BA and FIBA. It appears it is the worst it has ever been for that.

I know Brisbanes 2 new imports will both be playing this week, as they now have been cleared to play.

Not sure I know lots of things seem to get "lost". In the case of Brisbane I know the American guy Jason Curtis has been here for awhile and he did not get his clearance till this week. I understand that his was a combination of things that caused the delay and the last one was BB USA.

Rachael played in their first game and I know that the other American Christa arrived on Friday and is playing this weekend, so go figure.
