None of the boys have grown except Harry and he plays a guard/forward no one else on that team is tall and the one tall they did have that has the skills under the basket and in the paint they didn't pick for premier this year even tho he made it last year bottom age he is 6 foot 2 Joshua McColl and now he has walked and looking for a new assoc to move to fed up with there crap.

Logan again!
Trust me this team is beatable this year no Peter Pollock coaching this year the team is small except for one.
Unregistered
17-08-10, 17:26
how can you say they are small this year?
most of the team is in the 180cm ranga except for the 2 point guards and harry is around 6foot 3 which is there biggest player.
Unregistered
17-08-10, 17:51
maybe because this year top3 teams in sth had 6'5 to 6'7s. plural meaning they had more than one in this height range.
Unregistered
17-08-10, 19:59
well maybe by the time classics come around some of the boys will come around to be that height, there only 13 and 14 still have heaps of growing to do .

Just to let you know this kid sat on the bench for most of last session played in team that most not all of kids never accepted him because he was a nobody to them not part of the original team but when he finally did play at classics because of a new coach giving him a go he scored 14 points against brisbane (the team that won) and lost count on all the rebounds he made he is a team player he has had to work hard to get to where he is today and to keep his confidence and the only real training he has had from logan up until now was working with the d league boys and coaches this year that really helped him. Now I'm shore other kids have felt like this it's not a nice feeling specially for someone so young but saying no one would want him is very nasty comment he turns up to training session he wants to learn and has great protensial for years to come.

It not a bad thing to have smaller players with skill but what you don't do is get rid of a big player with some skill they a very hard to find. Any good coach would know that.

No disrespect to Josh or his family i think your good player but i think the U16 logan team is awesome if you look at the roster who would you leave out to put Josh in, i don't think anybody wanted Josh to go from logan, its not a bad thing to play in the southern cup, Everyone knows Jordan wasn't picked in this varsity high school team ( something like that ) good team coach

Would most agree that the 16's is a comparatively week division in 2010/11?
Unregistered
19-08-10, 20:54
how bout you put your name and where your from in your post.
you need to give them time there only 14 and 13 they will grow and some of them are allready growing tall.
you get the usuall freakish tall boys like towers and derksen, who are 15 or 16 now.
the point im getting at is give them time to develop and grow by the time come classics half the boys will be taller and would be more devolped.

I think you will find when u have alot of good players like yr 95 did they took alot of the spaces up for southern cup, and got most of the court time so the next year seem to miss out on the experience maybe they should make southern cup so there are no top age boys if they weren't good enough to make prem top age then better luck next year give the following year a chance to mature. My guess if I remeber at the start of the season Cade was 6.4 or 6.5 josh and inch or two smaller has any one got any once close to that this year. Before you answer take a inch of what you think u are.

How ironic. How about you put your name and where you're from in your post!
My point was that I thought 2009/10 was a particularly strong year in U16 and my feeling is that 2010/11 will not reach the same heights (even if we give them time as you suggest). Being taller doesn't necessarily equate to being more skilful so I don't understand your 'time to grow' comment. I am not trying to offend anyone (I know this is unusual on this site) - just make a comparison of standards from one year to the next.

Why do we measure players in barefeet? The game is played with shoes on..
I guess because their actual height doesn't include shoes. In the states players seem to get measured with shoes on. I have seen a few 6'2 pg that are lucky to push 6 foot.

The norm is to measure with shoes off. If you want up to half an inch higher, measure yourself first thing in the morning.

I no it early days but who do you think is going to be in the top three this year. How are each of the teams looking this year. This is the age group we should see growth spurts in the boys see what the assoc have been doing with the kids to improve them. Would like to see alot of tough comp this year close wins.
Compared to the 1995 age group there have been no real stand outs in this age group has anyone got any strong contenders who will stand out
Bring it can't wait

Having watched the 95, 96 and 97 kids there are equal stand outs in all ages. I am not going to name kids but no one year is better than another it is just the luck of when more than 2 standouts end up in a rep team together that then we take notice of the whole TEAM. ( i.e Logan every second year). You will be surprised how tall some of these 96 boys have become in the last 6 months and some are still only 13!
BBI has just named it's Gold Team. It is a cracker of top agers, some new comers (who have played the championship season at Auchenflower)who bring great experience and size to a group that has been developed nicely by BBI over the last few years. It will challenge Logan this year.
Good luck to all boys and may it be a great season. Parents remain well mannered and calm and let the coaches do the subbing!

Very true.....the reason that athletes are measure with shoes off is simply because it is the international requirement for athlete testing. Set by international organisations and the australian sports commision.

1. Logan - big loss losing Peter Pollack, but still too much fire power.
2. Runaway Bay - this is a guess presume they have same kids as 2 years ago?
3. BBI couple of nice recruits which will go straight into starting 5, no big depth behind Gouw?
4. Wizards - Good group of bottom agers plus Pittle and Larkins, maybe better than BBI?
THE REST
SW - lost a couple of good bottom agers to SD but got a couple of good top agers from Logan
Ipswich - Orbell and a couple of good bottom agers
GC-lost Kochner and McGown is there anybody left? maybe in SC?
m/Dore - lost good bottom agers to Wizards froma group low on talent already. SC?
BBI silver - Will have normal mix of decent top and bottom agers, if politics stays out might go alright but hardly ever works when coach has his son in team!
Logan silver?
anybody else?

Couldn't agree more about every year having it's standouts. Now we know more of the boys(we have seen them play lots in the last 3-4 years) from the different associations it is easier to size up the teams ( no pun intended).
I agree Wizards look good, although it will be interesting to see if Larkins can jell with the TEAM.
Have the Logan boys grown? I wonder if they will be as speedy or as strong as they were in under 14's 2 years ago? Will BBI Silver even try for PL? S-W may have some interesting players, there was some style being developed there last year in this age group.
Runaway Bay are bound to be strong again, they have the tall boys and solid coaching.
BBI Gold look good on paper but there are some doubtful smalls picked. Bench warmers?
Going to be interesting! Good luck to all.

You have 3 state team and 1 reserve from the Under 15 Port Macquarrie in this 5.....it is the bench depth that will be the issue....who cares they are match winning players.
Can Logan or anyone match that?

Trust me this team is beatable this year no Peter Pollock coaching this year the team is small except for one.
yea but peter pollock isn't the best coach though. Even though he may know his stuff, u just needed to see him coach Logan MDLeague last season. Uncommitted and unsupportive.
However Justin Vasterink on the other hand is a coach that led logan to their first ever state championship. He is full 100% committed to any team he coaches, and he carries himself excellent as idividual, and a teacher of the game.

4 plays 5 from each pool for the 7th and 8th spot. S/D beat Redlands to advance. Pool B was probably stronger and if Maroochydore manage to get up over Bris Silver, will make up 5 of the 8 P/L teams. It looked like more bottom agers in Pool A - could be wrong. But it does look like just about anyone could beat anyone else on their day. Redlands maybe a bit unlucky but they just seemed to run out of legs. They would have been feeling pretty good after game 1, they put in a good performance against Logan, didn't see too much of them after that. SW, Ipswich very close, Gold Coast didn't have the height to match most of the others. Not a bad couple of days, hard work to fit all the boys games in after such a late start and finish on day one.

That is very selfish and unsportsmanlike view. You should know why and it is bit of a stupid statement you made there. if you dont know, here it is .
it is very much possible that pool will not be of a same quality, so the only way to fix that is to play crossover games between 5th and 6th teams (or whatever placement it is) . that way if you do have week and strong pool, you still have a chance to go through.

Here are a couple of classics we have seen so far this season.
- No Gold Coast team ???
- No Redlands team??
In reference to Brisbane - hahahahahaha are you kidding , to take it out?
- Brisbane will be crap this year, all guards and no forwards.
- Why would Brisbane Silver even bother attending the PL Grading tournament?

Not selfish or unsportsmanlike, correct me if I am wrong but I cannot recall any other crossover (at grading) as you have explained it. Many teams in previous years have missed out on PL placing and have had to wait for wildcard challenge to get back in. Or last year when there was no wildcard until classics. And who decides a weak pool and a strong pool, that is a selfish viewpoint. Or is a strong pool determined by parents that are supporting a weak team therefore "poor me" we had the toughest pool!

Is under 16 boys the only age group that has had crossovers for grading it seems all the other age groups have their P/L teams? Nothing on BQ website that explains what happening in this age group.

No. every age group had crossovers. 4th and 5th in each pool cross over to determine who out of those bottom teams qualify for PL.

Check out the BQ web site

Click "BQJBC Premier League Grading Competition Draw "
Read the excel spreadsheet.
"** Top 3 in each pool after round games make PL (6 teams)
** 6th in each Pool do not make PL
4th and 5th in each pool play a cross over game to determine final two places"
I think it a pretty fair method. Some pools can be strong than others. Always pays to get into the top of the pool and avoid playoff, else it sudden death by playoff.

I thought they had done it (the cross over) before. If you are Redlands you would be upset if you are Districts then it's a great idea. We will see who is happy after Thursday. Really people can't know which teams are going to be strong or not so this isn't a bad way to try and get the strongest 8 right from the start. What could be an idea is the looser of the cross over, given they would have finished 4 or 5 should get an exemption from having to go through SC grading. Too much for parents and 8,9or 10 games on top of club, school and training. Just a thought.

they have had this crossover system before. they use this at classics, nationals and even the wild card challenge is based on this idea.
can't give teams an exemption from sc grading when extremely subpar teams continue to nominate for pl. happened last year with one team nominating for pl grading just for practice matches. in the end the team didn't even make sc. a team from the 18s grading this year was just there for practice.
giving an exemption would mean some people would nominate for pl knowing that would mean they're a definite of getting into sc, when they may even struggle to qualify for sc.
seriously. don't nominate for premier league if you don't seriously think you have a shot at it/don't want to be in premier league. don't use it as practice matches, organise some practice matches yourself.
/end rant

Like I said it was just a thought and I didn't mean every team. If you were good enough to make 4 or 5 in you pool. Maybe if you got a chance at either pl or an exemption some of the other teams might nominate. I think the thing that would need to change is that any team could nominate for pl not just those who can field a team in all age groups. I'm sure someone will be able to provide a reason why that can't work either. Anyway so far, I think all the teams that should have got through did but I do understand how R/lands could feel unlucky. I also think most of the teams there have a fair bit of improvement in them. Logan will be challenged more than previous years. Some motivation that most teams were being belted by them 2 years ago now some a lot closer.

Yes they did have a good weekend and yes they do have a good chance to beat Logan as nearly all the teams do but don't put yourself out there for some one to remind you how "crap" you are (I dont mean this, just using the quote) if you don't beat them. Surely the beatings they have been giving every one else over the past few years is enough to motivate all the teams. Don't give them a reason to get really fired up against you. If you play for Brisbane how good does it feel to prove peole wrong but your coach is probably thinking "Just shut up!" Have a good year.

Strange that these kids did not try out. I know that they had just been to Nationals but that doesn't explain the lack of interest. It is a path way into the U16 state team.

High cost and travel may have something to do with. If you add in the interest that kids have in other sports that could be why they didnt trial.

I would have thought that this virtually a State Squad being assembled for Nationals in 2 years time.
Although obviously not mandatory ,would make sense to have your head in there early on.

A couple of kids on the "team should be" list didnt even get picked in the initial squad so they could not have been concidered. If its a development squad, once BQ knew some of the stars weren't going to try, then some of the other fringe players could have been added to help with their "development"

If the kids that weren't there have what it takes and show this throughout the season they will get looked at. Blue Chip is a development opportunity for kids that have the potential to play state at U16/18 level not the team picked for the next few years.

True, but surely if the boys have any ambitions of playing state in the next 2 years, it would be smart to put your name and face in front of development coaches and selectors. If money is a problem they can pull out of the Port Macquarie tournament but these kids didn't even turn up to any of the development days. I am sure there were plenty of lads not picked for the squad that would of jumped at the chance to attend.

Don't get too carried away with yourselves (obviously proud dads). 13 yr old boys change a heck of lot over the next two years and by all means prove me wrong but history shows less than 1/3 of these names will feature again in a state team. Some kids keep improving at a rate above and beyond the norm and some don't improve much more especially as they grow into their bigger bodies. Some have already grown early and soon that height advantage disapears and some won't grow enough. Enjoy the moment for what it is. I would have thought that this virtually a State Squad being assembled for Nationals in 2 years time.
Although obviously not mandatory ,would make sense to have your head in there early on.
Not necessarily. Remember these blue chip and show me thingos turn a handy dollar for BQ and for sure they would like people to think that if they pay up now it will lead to future glory for them and their kids. Kids change and develop immensely over these next few years and being "hot property" (with parents with deep pockets) at 12 means little by the time u/16 state comes around.

Honestly who cares. When are you boys going to learn that top scoring means absolutely NOTHING in a good game of basketball. Count your blocks, intercepts, steals, assists, rebounds, good passes etc etc.
That's what really counts. Top scoring often is interrupted as not being a team player.
On another note what happened in the BBI Gold Vs Ipswich game? Anyone with a match report?
Rumor has it that BBI lost?

Yes after talking themselves up, Brisbane came unstuck by a great team game by the Ipswich Boys. Particularly impressed with Ipswich No 14's defence on Brisbane's big guy. No 12 from Ippi is also very stong under the basket. Overall though just a great team effort by Ipswich won them the game.

no i actually noticed it too....bq site just has a few stat vs result inconsistencies....eg. a player scored 10points and yet in their individual stats it shows an average of some other random number (after only 1 round)...at the end of the day individual stats are fairly irrelevant, teams with all the W's win, end of story

Fair enough, just don't know who would have cared. On a positive, three games separated by a total if 12 points. Great for it to be that close. Still think some one will knock over Logan.

What I think has happened they have put foul count in points the only reason I look at stats is to see who is dominate scorers for other team I prefer not score counts then kids may start to work as a team to win

Yes there tall number 9 Jack mcveigh was not there on Sunday and it damaged runawaybays entire performance. On the defence and offencive end of the court rbay couldn't handle either mdore or bbi. It was a great game by runawaybay against northside on the Saturday night
Close game against north side but bay managed to get on top in the second half making a come back form 10 ponits down. Bay got used to wizards zone defence and cruzed past for a 5 point win. Bay then lost againts to Mdore and bbi both by under 5 points but both could of been won without jack. I wasent surprised anyway because bay looked really drained out from the wizards game it was almost like the grand final.

It was interesting how runawaybay won by about 40 points against brisbane and dominated the whole game and logan only winning by about 20 points. When logan played bay they completely shut down jack mcveigh only scoring 20 points as his lowest score for his season. Logan has a very tough and strong zone defence which makes them the best defencive team but an average offensive team. probably runawaybay and northside are the best offensive team but there defence lets them down.

Still far too many Northside players in this mix and you left out your best guard Darnell although I don't think it will be necessary to go to any of the bottom agers at this stage. From previous experience, size and athleticism is the key at Nationals. Temperment in another. I think NS will have Jerimah and Zeb. The PG positon is interesting. Windsor is the big improver in PL and Barlett very impressive as well although they both need to grow asap.

I think Jerimah has it all to himself. (and I am not from Northside). I haven't seen the new spartens guy play yet but there are no other bigs who can catch and move. When are the rep and club coaches going to start teaching the bigs how to catch and move. All the coaching time is spent on the guards!

It's actually 'move and catch'. Harder to get a pass through to a stationary target, easier to double down when they catch standing still. Flash cut, step, elevate and finish either hand will usually get it done at this level.

Was watching trials. And that team sounds good. Maybe couple of changes.
Hall- Seamus/hogskins
Bartlett- Morris/wall

Agreed. The PG position will be an interesting one. Got to get some height and muscle in the position, can't just go for the small and quick.Have to also go for kids who are still growing and didn't grow early and have stopped now.
Can't see the new kid from Spartens getting there yet. Keep him for under 18's. Too raw, too many fouls.

I reckon marcus from bay or junior from Logan will take the 1 spot

Yes good call. Cool heads are needed in that spot and they both have that.

Marcus from bay is clearly much better than junior from Logan plus Marcus combining with mcveigh deadly combination

Versatility is the key. Marcus can play 1, 2 or 3 comftorbly.
