QABL State Championship Draw for 2008
Basketball fans from around the nation can start planning ahead with the official release of the 2008 QABL (Queensland Australian Basketball League) State Championship draw today. The QABL will continue as a ‘full-state’ 15-team competition (in both men’s and women’s) with teams stretching as far north as Cairns, and south to the Gold Coast. Geographically, the QABL is easily the largest State League in the country, which acts as a very strong pathway for basketball players in Queensland to reach the NBL (National Basketball League) and WNBL (Women’s National Basketball League). With six national League teams in Queensland (Cairns, two in Townsville, Brisbane, Gold Coast and the recent introduction of Logan) the QABL is a real breeding ground for talent both state-wide and nationally.
The QABL is made up of three pools of teams-
North- Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton and Gladstone.
Wide Bay / North Coast / Brisbane – Bundaberg, Maroochydore, Caboolture, Northside, Brisbane
South / West – Logan, Gold Coast, South West, Ipswich, Toowoomba
All 15 teams will play each other once, and play others in their pool twice which will see all teams playing 18 fixture games before finals.
Head Coach of the Cairns Marlins, Aaron Fearne, is looking to defend the teams’ National title from 2007. “We are putting together another competitive team and will be out to defend both our state and national titles in 2008” Fearne said. “The QABL is a tough League to compete in with strong competition week-in week-out and a massive amount of travel involved. The Marlins in 2008 will have a lot of depth, but we certainly will not lose sight of developing our younger local players. Being the reigning champs will have everybody out to knock us off, which is added pressure for the coming season” he said.
The season is set to kick off on the 18th of April, with finals starting on the 9th of August.
