The Southern Districts basketball program shone in every area this week when they dominated the sport in both seniors and juniors.
The Arrow Caravans & Towbars Brisbane Spartans started the week-end by winnning their fourth straight SEABL game in a row in another thriller against newcomers the Dandenong Rangers, 114 111 in Brisbane on Friday night.
With the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans enjoying the weekend off, the Brisbane Spartans men were the showpiece event for the night and they didnt disappoint.
After a sluggish start and six points behind at the end of the first quarter, the Spartans turned things around in the second, outscoring the visitors 39 24 in that period, enjoying a nine point lead into the main break.
The lead was reduced to just five points at the end of the third, setting up a mouth watering fourth quarter of SEABL basketball. A fiery clash erupted midway between Spartans Tyson Demos and Rangers Vince Inglima who exchanged words, resulting in unsportsmanlike fouls and many free throws.
A total of 77 free throws were attempted from both teams during the stop-start game.
Last weeks SEABL Player of the Week, Chris Goulding lead with 26 points with Greg Vanderjagt adding 25 points and 13 rebounds with Ash Cannan chipping in a valuable 23 points against his former team.
Vince Inglima led all scorers with 35 points and Dusty Jura close behind him with 29 points for the Rangers.
The Brisbane Spartans have now won four straight games and are yet to taste defeat this season and are sitting on top of the Eastern Conference SEABL ladder.
It obviously makes a big difference having a complete team at the start of this thing, Spartans head coach Bruce Palmer said. In previous seasons at this time, we are 0 3 or 1 4 or something like that waiting for NBL players to come in. This is a marathon not a sprint. But I am very happy in where we are positioned right now, he concluded.
In the post game function, Spartans welcomed back super-star guard Adam Gibson, the current NBLs best defender and two-time NBL Championship winner, who presented the post game MVP award to his former Brisbane Bullets and Spartans team mate, Chris Goulding.
Both Brisbane Spartans men and women teams will be back at the Carina Basketball Stadium this Saturday night with the Carina Leagues Club Brisbane Lady Spartans playing the Launceston Tornadoes at 6pm and the Arrow Caravans & Towbars Brisbane Spartans Men taking on Albury/Wodonga Bandits at 8pm.
In the juniors the Association also showed they are a class act by winning for the second year in a row, the Harold Peacock Shield.
This award is presented by Basketball Queensland to the best junior program within the competition in the South East of Queensland in age groups from under 12 through to under 18 in both male and female competition. It started in October 2008 and finished on Saturday night when all grand finals being played at the Brisbane Entertainment centre at Boondall.
We are continually looking at ways to develop our junior players and I personally want to thank all those volunteers who have coached and managed our teams over the past season offered Charles Ellis, President of Southern Districts. The development program, UPPS, we run between seasons is proving the difference between us and the other Associations. Our under 12 girls, under the direction of Mathew Beggs, went undefeated and our under 14 boys Cup team both won with most teams finishing in the top four.
The Under Pinning Program starts again after Easter and this year will have again the best coaching staff available including many former NBL and WNBL players involved. It is hard work but if a young player wants to get better then they must be willing to do the extra. Persons interested in attending should contact Greg Vanderjagt on 3398 2790 during business hours.
